Total Recall

The Edmonton Oilers have recalled Gilbert Brule, Magnus Paajarvi and Ryan O'Marra from Oklahoma City. We can imply a few things from this transaction, including the fact that Teemu Hartikainen and Josh Green didn't impress enough in their latest cup of coffee.

We await news today on Jordan Eberle's injury, and there's a chance Brule won't get through waivers.

  2. So long, Brule...

Also, Hartikainen: fans love him. Renney hates him. What gives?

Pleaaaase send Lander down in favour of O'Marra!

  3. I live in Western NY and was able to go see the Oilers play the Sabres last week. I got to see the Nuge eat popcorn in the pressbox (he was about five rows behind me) and Josh Green went -4 on the game.

Next week I'm going to see the Barons play in Rochester. I was looking forward to seeing Omark and Paajarvi, but now Magnus is back in Edmonton and Omark is still injured. But I do get to see Josh Green again!

  4. Was at the OKC game in Hamilton the other day and was very impressed by the way O'Marra seemed to inspire confidence on the bench
no doubt in the NHL he'll have less sway but it would still be great to have more of that attitude on the Oiler bench

MPS looked to be a bit more confident than I remember him with the oilers this season as well, although there were times where I had wished he would be a bit more aggressive in the offensive zone when given the opportunity

I'm decently confident that this will turn out well

    Any news on Omark's return?

  5. Brule coming up.

I don't even want to know how long Eberle's going to be out.

  6. The thing that gets me about this management is the half assed way of doing business. All they and team do is get confused.

They don't do talent evaluation or projection. Fing crisis management, if there is none we'll create one. The daily patch job. Yesterday it was the all kids line, today it's Gagner is now a center with Hall and Hemsky

Reminds me of "the knight that got on his horse and rode off in all directions".

Lander with the beginning of the season in OKC would be a viable second line center at this time if he has the talent as projected. Now, he's still treading water.

  7. I'm surprised thye didn't expose brule to recall long ago, without more info it's tough to know why they are recalling him now? Is it related to rnh and eberle? Arr they trying to save money by losing him on recall? Do they simply want him up? Are they calling himup, thinking that if he clears they'll demote lander?

    Who knows?

  8. Speeds, I don't understand it either. Both teams seem to be thin at Fwd. Why risk a waiver claim at this time?

  9. Looks like the Oilers are calling up Yakupov, except that it'll take nine months for him to get to Edmonton.

  10. Gotta say, I'm pleased with the handling of Paajarvi recently. The demotion was the right move and now the recall when there might be an actual opportunity to perform on a scoring line is right move.

    Classic carrot and stick treatment.

Actually, similar to the way they handled Schremp a few years back. They gave him the stick but presented the carrot and he chose to shove the carrot up their ass by scoring 5 points in 20 AHL games or something. Paajarvi wasn't incredible but was good enough that they could justify the promotion. With Schremp, to promote would have been to reward shitty play and shitty behaviour.

  11. Now, about developing Paajarvi. Anybody else see the Oil Change episode where Khabibulin was begging Sutton to put the wood to Paajarvi during drills at practice? The kid is soft...not in the Don Cherry/Swedish/negative sort of way...just that getting to the scoring area against nasty giants is not easy task. It's a learned skill I'm sure.

I'd sit him down and force him to watch hours of Corey Perry video. Both tall, lanky guys with tremendous natural talent. I watched Perry play in London and he was NOT the "Ryan Smyth on steroids" he's become. (Presumably why he was drafted at the bottom of the first round). He was the best player on the ice every night and never had to go to the tough areas but somehow, someway, he learned this would be the road to success.

Perry's got better hands and the best body control in the NHL but Magnus has terrific feet...he doesn't need to be as good as Perry in that regard to be a great player.

  12. knighttown, by my eye PRV's problem isn't that he won't ply in front of the net like Perry or Smitty. I think he needs to crash the net more. He seems to be pushed behind the net by Dmen. I think that he needs to build his upper body strength so that he can fight the Dman and turn the corner to finish his rush in front of the net. I have not seen him do that yet.

  13. You see if management was progressive you hire somebody like Peca as an assistant coach, not a Bucky who skated fast and crashed into the boards at each end. The man came in 2006 and all of a sudden all the centers improved at faceoffs. True fact.

  14. Paajarvi needs to mix it up a bit, too predictable going end to end. Use the middle more while taking something off his speed (see Eberle, Jordan). The opposing D are expecting him wide everytime. Catch them cheating/leaning a little outside and he can bust them inside. This may present more passing options as well.

  15. Paajarvi needs to start doing drills in practice where he just gets pummeled with pucks and cross checks. It might help him learn that he'll survive. It worked in one of the Mighty Ducks movies so I'm pretty sure it'll work.

  16. I know that Hartikainen had a tough schedule, but he really did not play very well when he was up with the Oilers.

  17. What was Brule's strange injury this time? Pulled a groin jamming with Walter Ostenak?

    ReplyDelete
  18. Lines I'd like to see, wtih the recent call-ups:

    Hall-Gagner-Hemsky

    Smyth-Horcoff-Jones/Paajarvi

    Jones/Paajarvi-Belanger-Lander

    Eager-Omarra-Brule

I don't think Brule will play thrid line minutes as Renney was disappointed with him last year.

I would like to see Paajarvi paired with Smyth and Horcoff and see if they have some success, but most likely Jones will get that spot.

The 4th line could be decent if Eager was replaced with Hartikainen, but I digress. If Hordichuk plays any time alongside Eager then the 4th line will again become a black hole for scoring chances.

The top 2 lines will get the job done, but our third and 4th line may get slaughtered if not handled properly. Oh, and if Horcoff is out then the whole game plan is screwed.

2nd degree burns on his hands from a Pop Tart. Seriously. Per Team 1260.

  20. Ducey: classic. Good thing he has made
Millions playing pro hockey. Otherwise he would likely be a massive drain on the Canadian welfare state.

  21. @ Ducey

That's hilarious, if Brule sustained a paper cut he might bleed out.

Although the injury of the day story goes to Dustin Penner.

  23. I think the Oilers will end up better than lottery. They've had some bad luck, lost some close ones, late ones, and have now had a rash of fairly minor injuries, save Whitney whose injury is major. My guess is that our first rounder will be 8-12 next year.

With the team plummetting right now, it would be a great time to dangle the first rounder for a bonafide 1D that could play half the game for the next decade here in Edmonton. A signed Weber, for example. I know that LT thinks trading the first rounder is crazy talk, but right now with the Oil in freefall, that pick will be perceived as great value, probably top 5. If it ends up 10, there are miles of quality that lie between those two picks.

It's a gamble, to be sure, as there is a chance you could end up looking like Burke watching the Bruins draft Seguin at the 2010 draft. However, drafting a D in the first round and hoping he turns out to be a top flight blueliner, and in less than 24 months as opposed to 5 years is also a gamble, and I would argue moreso than giving up the first round pick for an established great D in his prime. The clock is ticking on Jordan, Taylor, and RNH.

    Would you do this deal:
Pajaarvi for Weber (signed) and swap first round picks?

That NSH first rounder could end up being a nice item. I think their record is above the quality of the team riding the performance of a great goaltender. I expect NSH to fall from where they are.

I would make that bet. This team is starting to get good. Erratic behaviour like blowouts of the best team in the league followed by 6 game losing streaks is characteristic of many rebuilding teams. Check out the 1980-81 Oilers (not that I'm saying they will be THAT team....)

It's time to consider rolling the dice and cluster some serious talent. Khabby-for-a-third-rounder type trades are not going to get us where we need to go in the next 3-5 years.

  24. Dear Coach Renney:

Please don't shackle Paajarvi and Belanger together. That was the problem in the first place.

Sure, but no chance Nashville does. Weber could garner a lot more than not much + a first rounder.

  26. I think that among our second-chance players (Brule, Chorney) and bouncey prospects (Paajarvi, Omark, Hartikainen), Ryan O'Marra is the best candidate right now to establish himself as a key Oiler.

O'Marra has size, toughness, smarts, and ability, and all he needs is a good stretch of NHL games to really make his mark.

I think 90% of us agreed that he was equal to/better than Lander when he was recalled in early December. If Lander is sent down, O'Marra will have a chance to sell O'Marra jerseys, and I, for one, will buy one (literally).

    Go O'Marra!!

  27. Sure, but no chance Nashville does. Weber could garner a lot more than not much + a first rounder.

I guess I was thinking that they may see the most value in the first rounder (vs Pajaarvi) as a potential top 5 pick. Those don't get traded very often as each spot above 8 or so increses in value exponentially. But like you say, if they also expect the Oilers to finish 20th or so like I do, then they may not see much value for them in that trade.

I do know that I want Tambloweinni at the table whan and if Weber is shopped. We have much to offer in terms of prospects and should be able to bid against any team. I don't want to hear 'Weber to Flames/Leafs. Oilers didn't know he was available'. In fact, I hope they are already shaking the tree, bargaining position be damned.

Agree with your concept completely. Also have no difficulty with parting with our first overall for Weber along with one each of: (Gagner or Paarvaari) and (Gernet, Hamilton or Plante)

Without a.big minutes eating top D man Oil picking top 3 again this year. Would still do deal because it pushes all D men down roster

  29. Weber and Suter are going to choose their own ultimate destinations.

Why would they let Poile chose their ultimate destination?

Neither is going to give up their freedom to choose where they play for the next decade.

Suter might be traded at the deadline, since he is unrestricted this summer, but the Flyers (sans Pronger will be willing to overpay with young players, prospects, and picks). Maybe even Washington, but he's not going to sign till the summer time, unless he is trading where he wants to go (a la Bouwmeester).

The Oilers should get in line with everyone else with a proposition for Suter on July 1.

  30. Beginning at 8 the relative value of an NHL Draft pick is

    8-7 3.4% better
    7-6 .06% better
    6-5 12.8% better
    5-4 4% worse
    4-3 11% better
    3-2 3% better
    2-1 7% better

You are 33.8% more likely to get a top six forward or top 4 defenceman if you pick 1st rather than 8th. However, viewed in total whether you use Scott Cullen's analysis or Tom Awad's there is (usually) a drop of some kind between each successive choice though some spots have been dead zones (terrible 10 or frigthening 15). However, the deeper in the draft you go the more minimal the differences between selections are. In pragmatic terms you can be pretty certain that swapping a second rounder after 45 for two thirds of any kind is good strategy. Though things can still be pretty strange. Round 6 far out performs round 5 for example.

The difference between where the Oilers would currently be drafting and Nashville is from a 33% chance of getting a top 6F/top 4D to a 17% chance. So roughly from a 1 in 3 chance to a 1 in 6 chance. Would such a change in odds plus Pajaarvi actually get you Shea Weber who in an elite player?

The math says this year's first OV, this year's fifth OV and Pajaarvi would probably be about fair value. That is because there is a 50% chance of getting an elite player 1st OV and about a 40% chance of getting an elite player at 5th. A tenth OV who makes the NHL at MPS' age has a 9% chance of being an elite player.

(By the way, a word of caution you can't really just add them up that way - it isn't sound probability theory since each of these are discrete events. On the other hand we can't be sure Weber won't get hurt or that some of is career success is owing to Mr. Suter.)

I want Lowe Expectations and his wooden dummy in on the neg's for Weber as well Ashely but I don't believe Weber would sign here for a whole plethora of reasons. Wouldn't blame him on iota either when he can go to a team that actually has some management smarts and cup potential.

I'm very afraid those two bumblers would actually consider taking a Dman first and I think we'll be picking in the top 2 for sure.No way this team stays ahead of the 2 teams below us.

I actually think barring a catastophe and us losing the lottery we're a lock for #1 overall. That's as embarassing as it is pathetic.
