Eberle Out 2-3 weeks (per Gregor twitter)

I'll remember the day Jordan Eberle was drafted by the Edmonton Oilers. Wall to wall grin and as we roll along it's a good starting point for the current cluster. Today or tomorrow or a week from now the Oilers will tell us how bad his current injury is and how long he'll be gone.


Eberle's loss is a big one, and of course injuries are beginning to become a prominent theme  for this gifted cluster. RNH is already on the shelf from a freak injury and Taylor Hall has missed time in both seasons due to injury (as has Eberle with the current problem).
  • Feb 4, 2011: Jordan Eberle misses 13 games with sprained left ankle.
  • March 5, 2011: Taylor Hall misses the final 17 games of the 10-11 season with ankle injury.
  • Nov 30, 2011: Taylor Hall misses 7 games with shoulder injury.
  • Jan 3, 2012: RNH injured and out with a shoulder injury.
  • January 2012: Eberle injured and out with knee injury.
We shouldn't get into the fetal position over this, but injuries to young players are a concern. The future of the Edmonton Oilers sure is getting hurt quite a bit. They're freak accidents but that doesn't change their possible impact. We're lucky in one way: no reported C word, and with Taylor Hall as one of your young guns that's a shocker.

As for Eberle, we'll wait to hear and I'll update as able and know you'll do the same. I thank you for it.

    It's getting to the point where the joy is being taken out of watching the game (Not that there has been much joy in watching the Oilers anyway), because it's now just matter of waiting until the next guy gets hurt.

    What ever happened to the day of maintaining a relatively healthy roster all season? It started with Roli in Game 1.

    Questions about concussions people:
    Are actually more concussions this year? Are they just being better diagnosed? Better reported by players and doctors than in years past?

    Perhaps the Oilers were cursed ala the Red Sox after 2006. Lowe Expectations selling his soul to the devil would certainly explain his ability to pull off the trades he made to facilitate it all in 05/06, and why he's been hitting foul tips ever since.

    Great to hear about Potter reupping and at a much lower price than some had predicted. I have a lot higher hopes for he and Petry than many posters here.

    Brule to PHO is interesting...I would have thought his efforts would have been maintained in OKC...why re-enter him when there is a good chance someone grabs him? To save a couple hundred grand?

    I have lost track, does the loss of Brule now leave the Oilers at 49 contracts or is the number something lower?

    The room could be useful if they were to trade Hemsky for two signed players.

    I'm not sure what Phoenix's injury status is but they have to keep him on the big league roster or risk losing him on the waiver wire. Same as when the Oilers tried to recall Chorney.

    I'm wondering if the Oilers would reclaim him though...

    I really want to see Brule succeed. The sheer array of injuries and setbacks he has had has been tragic, and I'm hoping he manages to stick with his third team.

    Well that's good for Brule and I wish him well.

    There is one less redundant forward under contract so that gives us more flexibility now to perhaps go out and find an actual NHL d-man, instead of what we have.

    Assuming 3.2 understands we need actual NHL d-men.

    With Brule and O'Marra gone from OKC one could speculate that now would be an excellent time to send Lander down... Clearly they won't do it.

    Is Brule going to PHX the early part of a Hemsky trade to PHX for Rundblad? That would be nice - super unlikely but one can hope.

    Note to Brule: don't fall asleep by the pool. Your Pop Tart burns will pale in comparison.

    That is a playoff-deep forwards corp. I would be quite happy if that could be our lineup going into next season.

    Doan's a good alberta boy. I would love to see him coming home.

    THat just leaves a broken D corp and insecure Goaltending to resolve, presuming the team can stay healthy.

    The fix is in - Taylor Hall better cut back the production or pretty soon he is going to come down with that pubis thing. I think Tambellini is going all Jeff Gillooly on his own players here, just with a deeper level of stealth. How else do explain the top two D-men and top - two forwards being out for the count. Tambellini wants that top draft pick and wants excuses to go with it.

    I think Tom Renney got a phone call a few weeks ago that went something like this "OK TR, you like coaching an NHL team? Well, stop matching lines and coaching or else three weeks from now you'll be trying to figure out how to get your car around that zamboni parked behind it at your Hershey Hotel so you can get to your job as an AHL assistant coach on time. I'll have Pat Quinn here pulling the levers - I don't have to tell him anything, he knows how to run a bench - into the ground"

    I'm with you Cabbie, nothing to look forward to but the draft, as pathetic as that is.

    I really enjoy watching Hall, Eberle, RNH and Gagner play, and have resigned myself that this is a lottery team.

    I think the Oilers are planning to draft a dman, as Stauffer has said many times the last few weeks. I am sure they want Ryan Murray but I don't think they have expected to fall so low that they would have a chance at Nail or Grigorenko. Personally, I would hope to finish 29th and get Grigorenko,as Yakupov seems better but I don't want another small skilled winger for this team as much as a big 1a center like Sakic/Forsberg or Yzerman/Fedorov and later Yzerman/Datsyuk.

    The idea of getting Murray is also appealing if he truly becomes the next Scott Niedermayer. Of course we all know that drafting dmen is harder to be accurate and they take forever to develop. If he truly is as elite as people say though he should be able to step into the NHL right away as a third pairing guy. Like that is what the Oilers need , another 5th dman. Of course the proviso with him is that in a couple of years he will be a top pairing guy like SN or more likely Ryan Suter.

    Does anyone here think there is a snowballs chance in hell the Oilers would try to re-sign Penner or that he would take it? One would think the market for him will be small and he could be had on a bargain contract for one year 1.5-2 million or something. Him playing with RNH/Eberle would open up a lot of space for them, and I bet he would get 30-30 again, thus setting himself up for a big contract the next year. This would let MP develop in the AHL next year until he gets to a point per game, and actually scores some goals at that level before trying him in the top 6 in the NHL the following year. That would make sense for Penner and the Oilers. Thoughts? Would he do it ? Would the Oilers?

    Pancake-gate may bring him to the reasonable priced UFA range.

    also we all know the Oilers need to sign at least one top 4 dman this summer. Given who may be available who do you folks think would be worth chasing?

    My vote is for Francois Beauchemin, who by the way played 23 minutes tonight for Anaheim in a 5-2 win over Dallas. Perfect guy to either partner with a healthy Whitney, or mentor a sophomore Petry or even possibly a rookie Ryan Murray. Tough, good defensively with some offence. 4 million would be in the price range and could be paid with the money not paid to Barker and Sutton. That leaves Gilbert/Smid as the other top pairing and the three dozen third pairing already under contract to fight for the last 3 spots.

    I really hope we aren't looking at a Dman with a top pick and I really do not like Murray. I didn't even watch the loss to Russia but I flat out thought he stunk earlier in the tournament. Might have been game 1 I saw him doing his best pylon imitation.

    This team has enough young D. If we want to improve at the position go after some more provens vs waiting for 3-4 years. I think Petry follows a similar path to Gilbert to be honest.

    Either trade the pick for some depth or grab a C with it. This team is a grab bag at F right now tks to p poor management.
