This Year's Blue

I don't recall worrying about the blue 10 ten years ago. The Oilers would bring in an Eric Brewer and have Jason Smith and Janne Niinimaa and and and. There was a culture that the Oilers tweaked and it wasn't airtight but there didn't seem to be the kind of massive changeover we see these years.

Edmonton's opening night rosters since 2006 spring have featured a lot of names. Jason Smith, Steve Staios, Daniel Tjarnqvist, MA Bergeron, Matt Greene, Ladislav Smid, Jan Hejda Sheldon Souray, Dick Tarnstrom, Joni Pitkanen, Tom Gilbert, Denis Grebeshkov, Lubomir Visnovsky and on it went.

The current blue features three players Edmonton will count on (Ryan Whitney, Tom Gilbert, Ladislav Smid) and then a cast of several. The current roster group has all kinds of toubles (Whitney's health, Gilbert trade rumors, Smid protects himself like he's Amish) but there's a chance the Edmonton Oilers will go to war with this group.

Here's how their NHL coaches used them one year ago.

EVEN STRENGTH TOI/G
  1. Ryan Whitney 18:19
  2. Tom Gilbert 18:09
  3. Jeff Petry 16:54
  4. Ladislav Smid 16:50
  5. Theo Peckham 15:58
  6. Cam Barker 14:10 (6th on Wild D)
  7. Andy Sutton 12:16 (8th on Ducks D)
Both new hires were third pairing options for their previous teams (although there was a lot of sway on both rosters). A guess would be that Barker will get a push at EVs, possibly playing with Whitney on the top pairing or teaming up with Tom Gilbert on the 2 pairing. Sutton would appear to be mentor, enforcer and designated sixth man most nights.

PP TOI/G
  1. Ryan Whitney 4:19
  2. Tom Gilbert 2:59
  3. Jeff Petry 2:11
  4. Cam Barker 1:22 (4th on Wild D)
  5. Ladislav Smid 0:45
  6. Theo Peckham 0:06
  7. Andy Sutton 0:05 (7th on Ducks D)
Barker should more than double his PP minutes based on what the Oilers are saying about him. It'll be interesting to see how they use Gilbert this season on the PP; I felt he should play more a year ago, but a lot of minutes went to Kurtis Foster. I think Gilbert could help, but Barker is going to get the push.

PK TOI/G
  1. Tom Gilbert 3:21
  2. Ryan Whitney 2:42
  3. Ladislav Smid 2:40
  4. Theo Peckham 2:31
  5. Andy Sutton 2:23 (4th on Ducks D)
  6. Jeff Petry 1:16
  7. Cam Barker 0:50 (7th on Wild D)
Sutton should be able to help, although his mobility is a concern. Barker has played some heavier minutes on the PK in the NHL. I hope they're not done, but I think the Oilers might be putting a tremendous amount of faith in Barker being able to post a strong season. We'll know soon.

  1. Interesting aside.

Nashville has just traded Lombardi and Cody Franson for Brett Lebda and John Slaney.

Leafs now have a very impressive top 6:

Phanuef, Liles, Schenn, Aulie, Gunnarsson, Franson with Komisarek at #7.

I expect the Preds are clearing budget space for Weber and Komisarek could get Fingered.

    Very smart trade by Burke.

Would Komisarek help on the Oilers blue?

  2. missed it yesterday, but White signed a 2 yr deal with Detroit for $2.875 mill per. Nice signing for Detroit.

As for that deal, salary dump by Nashville. they can re-sign Weber to big dollars and make some moves to bring in wingers now. Lombardi is a concussion problem making to much so it made sense to dump him. Nashville will play at the cap floor.

  3. You have to think, with the glut of forwards they need to move now to make room for the new hires, that a right handed dman must be #1 on shopping list, no?

I'm no huge Tambo booster or anything, but July 1 at least showed he's aware of the holes in the the lineup.

Or, they just use Barker as this year's scapegoat.

  4. The Franson deal and Lombardi salary dump probably means Arnott is headed back to Nashville.

  5. Pretty good move by Nasvhille to dump all that real money on Toronto.

Cody Franson is an NHL defensemen but with Blum, Ellis, Josi and Ekholm on the way he's not even going to be missed.

Lets keep in mind that Trotz is the best coach in the league and Nashville's system is air tight.

The real loser in the trade is Cody Franson.

  6. My guess is Sutton is going to be doing plenty of PKing. I wonder if the Oilers will use him as the big body to stand in front of the net on the second powerplay unit.

  7. Really? What was Nashville thinking?

Lebda is terrible and if that's the same Slaney I'm thinking of he hasn't had a great moment since he scored the game winner in the gold medal game against Pavel Bure's Russians.

  8. Oilers have agreed to terms with F Josh Green on a one-year, two-way contract.

  9. Josh Green?

There's a blast from the past....

  10. The Oilers must have been reading this blog and decided to bring in a Green.

  11. I think Tamby likes Canadian players.

Barker, Belanger, Eager, Green, Hordichuk, Nugent-Hopkins, Smyth, Sutton

  12. The Green move is a bit puzzling. Is he needed in OKC?

  13. This probably means Giroux is signing elsewhere.

Green and Helmer are the veteran leaders for OKC.

  14. Not seeing why Gilbert and Petry can't be the two RH shots on the PP. I think the kid showed amazing composure in his stints last year and should be another step up the ladder this season.

Barker's ability to contribute either direction is the bigger Q mark for me.If he can kick some bad habits and get his head wrapped a little tighter he'll be a nice plus. Repeat last year and his money was far better topped and spent elsewhere.

We'll know exactly what we have depth wise once the usual suspects at F & D start heading for sick bay. I suspect Oilers management is getting real tired of that happening as they very well should be.

Can't help but look back at last year and ST sitting on his hands while 5 prospects, 4 F's and 1 D got thrown to the wolves. He's one year out of step on the whole rebuild concept.

  15. Question for the groupthink:

If barker is going to need some experienced top 4 guy to lean on and regain his form, the obvious answer becomes Whitney as his partner. However, as his BTN numbers suggest, he' likely going to get eaten alive as a 1st paring defender.

Could we see the pairings end up like this:

5-77 (Death for Breakfast + Dogs Breakfast)
6-Barker (Meat and Potatoes + Dessert)
    49-58 (Mrs. Buttersworths)
    Sutton

God knows those pairings won't last past the first 2 weeks, but that seems almost playable, even if Ladi and Gibby are likely to get run over facing the best. Then it's just a matter of our other pairings killing the 2nd tier and the bottom end sawing things off.

... Yeah, I know its not likely, but 4.0 showed up for free agency just like I hoped, so maybe it is foolish to hope this could work, but its sure as hell a lot better of a bet than having Barker on the first pairing and getting mauled.

    Other thought:

Could barker be here to keep expectations down for Petry and allow him more time to learn the NHL game, without being expected to perform every night?

  17. Jordan: I'm fine (or close to fine) with Smid-Gilbert second pairing.

The problem comes with the gap between those two and the fourth member of the group, who will play with Whitney.

I'm not certain Barker is a better bet than Petry, but putting Petry there is not a good idea.

    It just doesn't sit right.

  18. Looks like the team is being set up to skate hard and trade paint.

With the Bulin Wall as our Sievilization World Wonder, anarchy and despotism will remain the Oiler's game plan of choice.

Still, it's an upgrade over the Prendergast years.
