I remember that first Capitals team for lots of reasons. Greg Joly was the #1 overall pick after an incredible spring that included his Regina Pats marching all the way to the Memorial Cup. I followed the Pats that spring (they also boasted Clark Gillies and a few others) and thought Joly would have a long, productive career. Not so much.
The other item: a HNIC game (and it may have been this one) in which the teams lined up at center ice for a faceoff which was followed mere seconds later by a Dave Keon goal. The Caps defenders had too much of a gap between them (they were close to the boards) and Keon pushed the puck behind the center and had (for all intents and purposes) a breakaway. Can you imagine? I'd seen enough hockey by then to recognize it was a play that wouldn't come around often, and as it turned out I haven't seen another one.
That Washington Capitals team was beyond awful. Milt Schmidt killed them at the expansion draft and the WHA chopped them into little tiny bits that summer. When some old guy like me tries to tell you that even the worst NHL team today is somehow historically bad, roll your eyes and walk away.
The early Capitals were frightening.
The current Capitals aren't quite a murderer's row but they're good all the same. Early season stats suggest Washington is giving up 2 goals a game and scoring 4+--you're not going to lose many games that way. Capitals stats tell us there are more than 2 lines scoring:
- 4 goals: Marcus Johansson & Jason Chimera
- 3goals: Alex Ovechkin, Mathieu Perreault
- 2 goals: Alex Semin, Nicklas Backstrom, Joel Ward
- 5 goals: Ryan Nugent-Hopkins
- 2 goals: Taylor Hall, Ryan Smyth, Ryan Jones

I didn't think the Oilers would win the other night and I sure don't think they're going to win tonight. A win this evening would be magnificent but let's review here: the Capitals have the best record in the league. Coach Renney is riding Khabibulin (I don't know that he has a choice, the guy is playing very well) and that should mean Dubnyk is the regular by the time I put up my Christmas tree.
Khabibulin will be tested tonight in a big way. I expect that will be the story.
The Capitals are just an offensive juggernaut, and much more physical than they appear (Might be less now with no Fehr).
ReplyDeleteKhabibulin's test night indeed.
Tough i'm very curious how the long ones will react to having Backstrom, Ovechkin and their puppet (Whoever it will be) cycle the puck. My idea is tha they won't touch the puck much if the Boudreau matches lines.
Anyhow
LT: Weren't the 1993 Senators more awful?
(That's FPB lol)
ReplyDeleteCournoyer scored a goal in similar fashion. Something like 7 seconds after puck drop and at least one of those 7 seconds was astonishment from the scorekeeper. When the Roadrunner got behind you, you were done.
ReplyDeleteI remember Dick Irvin, I believe, telling us it would have been a record for fastest goal in a game but it was at the start of a period not a game.
FPB, The Caps were putrid. Plan 9 from Outer Space horrible. The only good thing was, unlike the 93 Sens, we didn't have to watch them.
Spoiler: Haha. Why did you have to watch them?
ReplyDeleteYou underestimate Peter Sidorkiewicz!
Putting Khabi in is the right choice - no sense throwing Dubnyk to the wolves for his first start in a while. Dubnyk should get the next soft game though - riding NK game after game is going to result in him becoming injured or exhausted regardless of how good he is playing.
ReplyDeleteJust checked out the Caps.... wow they WERE the worst.
ReplyDeleteA goalie with +30 starts and NO wins?
HNIC and the Toronto Sports Network both conspired against hockey-loving Canadians all across the country and made our eyes bleed in 93 with Sens broadcasts.
ReplyDeleteSpoiler: Jamie Baker, a true Canadian hero.
ReplyDeleteThis is game 2 of my mini pack. Very much looking forward to this game, as I have never seen Ovechkin play live before.
ReplyDeleteThat, and the Oilers are pretty fun to watch now too.
I don't think we'll win this one, but i think this is going to be a really good game.
I recommend avoiding uneccessary penalties in this one. The defence is going to be working hard and won't need the extra burden.
ReplyDeleteIt will be interesting to see how Mr.Peckham looks tonight.
My wife, who hasn't been to many games, came with me to watch the Caps 2 years ago. Her comment: "the Oilers don't have anyone that looks scary on the ice like Ovechkin. The Oilers defense is scared, you can tell".
ReplyDeleteTrue 2 years ago, and here's hoping that has changed. Up front, we may actually have defensemen who back up scared of what our kid line can do. Gotta be honest, I really look forward to Hemsky being back for 10 games before he is hurt again. That'll be a fun 10 games, followed by anguish and frustration as he gets hurt and we slide into our mid season slump again.
What is up with MAGNUS PAAJARVI ?
ReplyDeleteI said it the other night...if we win tonight you've got to slam the pedal down here. Go out and get that extra defenceman and let these kids keep winning. Don't leave it to continued best-ever performances and set them up to raise expectations and then falter.
ReplyDeleteSome good news..Green is doubtful for tonight.
ReplyDeleteI still have flashbacks from the rout last year. Remember the 2 on 0 with about 6 passes back and forth? *shudder*
ReplyDeleteI expect the big story to be RNH being forced to stay with Edmonton for the rest of the season :-)
The Kyle Turris trade request has been confirmed. Apparently it has never been about money - he just wants out of Phoenix.
ReplyDeleteSome very chesty comments from the Yotes GM in here:
http://espn.go.com/nhl/story/_/id/7155852/kyle-turris-asks-phoenix-coyotes-trade
Just from looking at the first period the other night vs Det, here are Caps combos and pairings:
ReplyDeleteGreen-Hamrlik
Alzner-Carlson
Schultz-Wideman
OV-Backstrom-Brower
Semin-Johanson-Knuble
Ward-Laich-Chimera
Perrault-Halpern-Hendricks.
it's a tall order for tonight because of who were missing but what I'm looking for - outside of wins - are wins and/or games where the Oilers are outchancing and outshooting the opp in the process.
For that to happen over a long haul we're gonna need a high magic number of combined caps where both 6-83 are healthy. Now, where would you set that number? 25-30 maybe? And that's not enough.
Right now the only fly in the Oilers early success ointment is they've been sagging a bit in the third period. Now, is that just nerves and/or the low GP total of a lot of our players? Or is it that maybe teams take this club less than seriously but by the time 40 min are over they're ready to play.
In terms of lining up all the ducks, ie getting another top four dman to play with 6 so that 44 slides back to form perhaps a very good third pairing with 25, it would be nice to have that person in place - along with health for 6-83 - before the Oilers head on that brutal six game roadtrip.
In the meantime we wait. Wait for things like just how aggressively Khabby's numbers regress to the mean and just how we look when we get on the road and the other coach calls the shots. If the Oilers pick up three wins on that roadtrip and are staying even in shots and chances then we've got something here a little earlier than anyone expected.
But that's all for a little later. For the next four days you hope to pull two wins out of the next three games.
I believe the fastest goal in a game is held by Doug Smail of the Jets and I was there to see it.
ReplyDeleteIt was against the Nordiques Dave Christian lost the face off as the puck came back to the Left Dman who then passed across to the right Dman, meanwhile Smail was scooting up the middle with his stick extended on the ice he nicked the puck caught up to it and scored I believe it was 4.3 seconds.
It makes you wonder how much research really goes in to Player Acquisition in the NHL? Everyone is shocked at how little impact Eric Cole is having so far in Montreal. He was ineffective in Edmonton during his short stint here as well. Eric Cole is a Carolina Hurricane and apparently a shadow of that player anywhere else. Luc Robitaille had a similar situation when he was out of LA. He wasn't anywhere near the same player when he was in Pittsburgh or Detroit.
ReplyDeletePboy: COle's shooting 0,45% right now. That's a 1/3 of his life SH%.
ReplyDeleteHis teammates are also shooting 4,5% and he has a Corsi ON of +10,45.
It's a question of luck, and idiots freaking out on 10 games.
I predict the Oilers will win 3 - 2. Teams are not used to our young guys and I think the veterns will be able to hold up against the offence of Washington.
ReplyDeletePS. Where can I watch Oil Change online? I am out of country and I cannot view on Oilers/Citytv or Sportsnet.
FPB,
ReplyDeleteDoubled checked your numbers, and you are right.
MTL is seeing the shitty end of the bell curve.
They are also outshooting their opponents by almost 5 shots a game. That's huge.
Thanks for the tip, they will probably be under valued as far as line setting goes.
OT - I live outside North America and am trying to watch Oil Change - Overdrive online. Unfortunately both CityTV and Sportsnet will not play outside North America. Last year they posted them on the Oilers Webpage and on Youtube but this year no luck. Does anybody have any ideas.
ReplyDeleteOil Change Overdrive Ep. 1
ReplyDeleteLine up as per CHED website:
ReplyDeleteTaylor Hall - Ryan Nugent-Hopkins - Jordan Eberle
Ryan Smyth - Shawn Horcoff - Ryan Jones
Magnus Paajarvi - Eric Belanger - Sam Gagner
Ben Eager - Anton Lander - Lennart Petrell
Theo Peckham - Corey Potter
Ladislav Smid - Tom Gilbert
Cam Barker - Andy Sutton
Nikolai Khabibulin.
Devan Dubnyk
Kind of surpised that 13 or 25 isn't with 44 seeing as 24 hasn't played in a while and 44's been seeing some tougher ice.
CHED could be wrong about the pairings, they were the game that 6 came back.
OILDBA - Sorry if you meant that the City TV website won't play in your area. That's what the link leads to.
ReplyDeleteI wonder when Omark's going to get back in...
ReplyDeleteSeems silly parking him in the press box. If he's not going to be used, let the guy play in OKC.
Rick,
ReplyDeleteOmark has an out clause in his contract.
If gets sent to the AHL this year he can leave for the KHL.
He did not have that clause in the first year of his contract.
Sending him down means losing him for nothing, so you'll see him traded before demotion.
Coming off the IR, Kytnar gets assigned to Stockton.
ReplyDeleteAs per Stauffer.
Abney, Martindale, Kytnar and Roy all Oilers property playing the ECHL,
Omark must have really pissed off Renney somehow.
ReplyDeleteIt would be very interesting to compute a Gini index (over goals, points, or prod) for every complete season of every team to see whether it augments team goal differential in predicting win/loss differential (record).
ReplyDeleteIs a goal worth more or less depending upon who scores it?
Of all things I might be motivated to compute, it would be the effect of injury replenishment. You need accurate shift charts with data in depth, but I'm sure it can be done. I'm not sure balanced scoring shows up in season outcome, but I bet it does on variance of outcome as inflicted by Our Good Lady of soft ankles.
It would also be interesting to look for late season sag effects on teams built around a studly Hercules Pirouette and a motley cast of call ups from the Old Woman Who Lived in a Shoe.
I wonder, what was the most unbalanced successful team of all time? Any team with Bobby Orr? Or this season, where one guy made a difference, one guy potted 26 goals on the back of -18 ("the hill, I make it bigger for you"), and one guy barely dribbled over the 20 goal mark, yet they finished first in their quagmire.
2007–08 Washington Capitals season
If Our Lady had nicked Ovie by the skate lace, they would been less effective than the Dukes of Hazard minus General Vee.
Are we happier tomorrow if MPS pots two in a 4-2 loss, or if RNH picks up three assists in a 3-2 victory?

ReplyDeleteSaw this top 10 recently courtesy of TSN, and it was of the top face-off plays of all time. The top play is the fastest ever goal (apparently) to start a game. I'll take TSN's word for it.
ReplyDeleteBest faceoff plays
others = Eddie Staniowski, Dennis Sobchuk = Memorial Cup
ReplyDelete= sad that I can remember that team vividly
* runs off sobbing to shave long white beard
For the poolies, sounds like Crosby will be back by Nov 11 and possibly before that, on their California road trip.
ReplyDeletehttp://aol.sportingnews.com/nhl/story/2011-10-27/pens-gm-shero-sidney-crosby-hitting-at-practice-concussion-return
sweetjamesjones; apparently you didn't take TSN's word for it. The CBC clip with Mogilny scoring "ties the record at 5 seconds" as our favourite color man explained.
ReplyDeleteFrom old wikipedia:
Fastest goal from start of game: Doug Smail (Dec. 20, 1981), Bryan Trottier (Mar. 22, 1984), Alexander Mogilny (Dec. 21, 1991) all at 5 seconds.
I seem to recall Gretz getting one of those goals straight in off the face off, but I am fuzzy on the details.
Should be an interesting game tonight for sure. I just hope that if Sutton is somehow on the ice at the same time as Ovechkin; he needs to go directly to a PK posture beside Khabibulin. Otherwise Ovechkin might skate by him so fast that Sutton might end up pivot-drilling himself through the ice plant piping in the concrete.
What's up with Hemsky? Sore shoulder my ass. Building strength in his shoulder would have been part of his rehab, unless the scar tissue is causing a lot of pain.
ReplyDeleteThis Hemsky situation just makes no sense, he must of re-injured it and now the Oilers are downplaying the injury.
Hard to believe that Hemsky would miss 2 weeks+ because of a "SORE" shoulder.
Dreger is saying the Oilers and other western teams had a recent discussion about creating more western AHL franchises
ReplyDeletehttp://tsn.ca/nhl/story/?id=379050
They can make more AHL franchises but don't bring one to Saskatoon. AHL hockey is terrible. I'd rather have junior.
ReplyDeletePut one in Lethbridge. FML are the hurricanes ever terrible.
ReplyDeleteEvery. Single. Year.
Damn, Hemsky is going to be out till mid November now for a total of a month.
ReplyDeleteSomeone give some HGH or steroids to strengthen this guy's body.
How do the Oilers trade or sign Hemsky? The guy can't stay healthy even with limited bodily harm. Plays 2 games and then is out for a month.
Unbelievable.
Doesn't he have to be on LTIR to consume growth hormone tough? (Or something like that(
ReplyDelete@FPB
ReplyDeleteWell the Oilers were considering putting him on IR, but haven't done anything yet.
I'm willing to bet that the 1 month will end up being 2 or he'll come back and promptly get re-injured, again.
Can we turn his house into a hyperbaric chamber?
ReplyDeleteHemsky is Tim Connolly 2.0
ReplyDeleteWoodguy:
ReplyDeleteWould Omark invoke that KHL clause? (not that I want to find out..)
He's a RFA next offseason, so I don't see the guy bolting to Russia when next year he can get an one-way contract and a decent raise to play in the NHL, be it from the Oilers or somewhere else.
I think the Oilers will run Omark out there soon. Only two lines are scoring and Omark is an able offensive player.
ReplyDeleteNot the biggest baseball fan in the regular season, but man post season is always exciting. Should be a fun night of sports
ReplyDeleteI honestly feel badly for these pitchers. The hitters are 8 deep on both sides. Crazy.
ReplyDeleteANd apparently Hockey Canada going to ask Yzerman to run the 2014 olympic team assuming NHLer's go.
ReplyDeleteOn that note, could we see the kid line in the Olympics together replacing the San jose line?
And LT, the hitters are crazy. when unknown guys are hitting .500 in the postseason you know its gotta be tough. could be last game for Pujols in St. Louis. Any chance he actually walks? They are always competitive, can give him a high salary (not yankees high but decent) and they adore him there. If he walks for money I guess you can't blame him, but I wonder if St. Louis fans would hate him like Lebron.
ReplyDeleteDBO: I'd bet money Pujols will be offered the moon to play for the Cubs.
ReplyDeleteyeah the cubs seem like a fit and Epstein will want to make a splash.
ReplyDeleteheard Jays may go after Fielder, but if Pujols gets crazy money he may price himself out of everywhere but NY or Boston
Boston has Gonzalez and the Yankees have Teixeira plus Montero (top hitting prospect) as DH. Maybe the Angels for Fielder if Toronto is a no go.
ReplyDeleteBos8: Any chance they grab Pujols anyway and play someone out of position? Or deal Gonzales?
ReplyDeleteooohhhh.. lucky. Pujols is scary
ReplyDeletewow. Just watching the WPG/PHI game.
ReplyDeleteWPG were winning 6-2, and PHI made it 6-4 going into the 3rd.
PHI scored 3 straight goals in the first couple mins to lead 7-6. The Jets then scored two more within a couple minutes to regain a lead at 8-7.
15 goals and winnipeg jets. If I weren't watching NHL via high speed internet on an LCD tv, I'd swear this was 1985.
Sure they're going to play O'mark(I've decided he's Irish); but it would be nice if he actually does something aside from lose the puck in the O-zone.
ReplyDeleteThe biggest regular season test for this team since the 1980's, and some of you insist talking up that juiced up steroid-ball instead.
*Red Sox Fan*
8-7 WIN over PHI half way through the 3rd.
ReplyDeleteThat's from tonight, not 1985.
Love it!
Haha!
ReplyDeleteI didn't see Danny's post before I wrote mine.
We even picked the same comparable year.
Awesome!
Love pond hockey.
It's not on TSN2 liars! is it...
ReplyDelete0 for 0: They'll switch it over at 7:43 if need be.
ReplyDeleteI know sir. I just expect a tie. overtime. and a 12 round shoot-out.
ReplyDeleteit is the leaves
8-8 phi and wpg. wow
ReplyDeleteIt's on tsn2 now.
ReplyDeleteStream
ReplyDeletehttp://sports95.net/
8-8 Winnipeg and Philedelphia, apparantly the teams struck a gentleman's agreement prior to play not to "back check" or play anything resembling "defense".
ReplyDeleteThank Goodness, I bet over on the over/under of 15.
ReplyDeleteLT
ReplyDeleteHighly doubtful that Boston would go Pujols. They already have one in Gonzalez both offense and defense and Boston is borderline into the luxury penalty which seems to be their cap. Besides, Lackey is down with elbow surgery for the year and their pitching, starting and BP, requires overhaul. Other than Becket, Lester and Buchholtz their pitching is questionable. Boston is fragile after the big collapse. They can't afford to mess up with their fanbase and their history with free agents, last one being Crawford is is shabby.
and that's the issue with the kids in their own zone.
ReplyDeleteKid line caught chasing in the defensive zone early. Might not be an enjoyable game.
ReplyDeleteWSH is good at hockey.
ReplyDeleteOilers had a few chances to clear there, they can't turn it over to this team.
who broke the news on 83? where's the link?
ReplyDeleteJones fails a clearing attempt and then goes offside. Hm.
ReplyDeleteWhat news? Christ, did he fall on Steven Tyler?
ReplyDeleteEbs is always running around picking the wrong guy in his own end. The other two aren't bad.
ReplyDeleteWAS is good.
ReplyDeleteI see that RNH's Movember 'stache is filling in nicely.
ReplyDeleteAlright Smytty it's not cute anymore. Cut out the boneheaded penalties.
ReplyDeleteWG: hah funny. Just checked twitter and Bobby Mac asked if it was 1985 as well.
ReplyDeleteAlright Smytty it's not cute anymore. Cut out the boneheaded penalties.
ReplyDeleteHe just misses Ethan.
Gotta make some hay on these PP chances. The EV play is far too one-sided to win without it.
ReplyDeleteRNH might be a nice option on the PP after all these chances.
ReplyDeleteJust wow. Eberle - What a joy to watch. Potter with a very smart play as well.
ReplyDeleteWashington seems determined to keep us in this game with a string of bad penalties.
ReplyDeleteThis should be a 3-1 WAS lead after one by my eye but it isn't. Oilers are running around though, and MacT always said you can the losses coming before they get here.
ReplyDeleteHaha 1-1.
ReplyDeleteAfter that 1st goal by the Capitals, it looked like a potential blowout for a few minutes, but now they're tied, it's anyone's game - if Oilers beat these guys they're going to be ordained the best new team in the NHL.
For October.
@Lowetide: MacT used to coach enough losses to be an expert - at losing.
ReplyDeleteI think Pujols will be either a Cubbie, a Wsh National (they have a lot of money and 2 young kids in Strasberg and Harper who might be stars), an Angel or stay with the Cards. He's been insistent that he become the highest paid player in MLB but now that the steroid era is over, his prime years should be over in 2-3 years and he's looking for a 10 year deal. I have a feeling that he will sign with whoever gives him the most cash and the longest term. I think it will be the Cubs as well.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful pass by Eberle.
Washington is clearly on a different level than the Oilers but if they keep taking stupid penalties, maybe we can keep our heads above water.
If the Oilers win this game, Renney should get the Jack Adams.
ReplyDeleteLT: I just saw someone say 83 was gonna be out until mid November so I thought someone from the media had reported it.
ReplyDeleteChances are he Will be out longer than they intially said just because that's the way of his career but we can have foolish hope until the truth strikes us;)
I had the chances at 5-4 Oilers aftr 20; 3-1 on the ST and Caps didn't have a chance in the period's last 13 min.
I love that 93 has a spot to shoot from - right faceoff circle - and I have more faith in the PP than I have had in years. We miss 83 at EV but the PP's moved on without him.
agreed?
I usually see 14 pretty good in his own zone, but he was wandering and watching the puck on the goal.
ReplyDelete94 was free lancing in that period and his check had too many open looks.
Two of the last guys I expect to see do that.
I had the chances at 5-4 Oilers aftr 20; 3-1 on the ST and Caps didn't have a chance in the period's last 13 min.
ReplyDeleteHave you been drinking? :)
Caps had a lot of O-zone pressure, I suppose there was a couple shifts where they just ran around without getting anything towards the net. Of course you're the one logging the chances so you have a better idea than anyone else, but it sure seemed more lopsided than that prior to the parade to the box for the Caps.
Dennis: Yeah. I don't think rookies belong on the PP but this line is kind of lighning in a bottle.
ReplyDeleteTyler did a thing recently on Hemsky's pondering PP and man these kids put the old set play "get it to the blue for a shot" PP to shame.
Horcoff in his "office" lol.
ReplyDeleteMax Cady is stopping pretty much everything he sees.
ReplyDeleteLaRussa pulling all the right strings.
ReplyDeleteTHUNDEROUS BODY CHECKS!
ReplyDeleteSomebody goin get pregnant tonight.
The Oilers are actually taking it to the Capitals right now. Surprising.
ReplyDeletePlayers and puck moving on the PP, its a different world.
ReplyDeletePaajarvi having a nice game, a break and he might have one.
And I guess that there is why they got Sutton. Holy shit he punished that guy.
No idea how sutton doesn't get a penalty there. Me likey.
ReplyDeleteI wish Eberle would stop fanning on those chances.
ReplyDelete2012!
ReplyDeleteRUSH!
ReplyDeleteOh Peckham. You so crazy.
ReplyDeleteWe're beating the best team in the league! Our suffering was worthwhile?
ReplyDeleteThat's why you've had you arse parked on the bench Theo!!
ReplyDeleteMother!!
Lord are the Capitals trying to set some sort of record for most minor penalties taken in a game where Ethan Moreau didn't dress?
ReplyDeleteFinal ab for Albert?
ReplyDeleteWhen asked to comment on the game Mr. Moreau indicated that if the Capitals power play didn't start clicking they would be in tough all night.
ReplyDeleteIts time for anothe Corey Power Potter Play!
ReplyDeleteimaterp - one w short
Make that a double Potter Play
ReplyDeleteIts really kind of the Capitals to agree to spot us a player for half the game to make it sporting.
ReplyDeleteI think the 74 Capitals are in the building!
ReplyDelete2-1!
ReplyDeleteLots of time for that blowout I predicted about 8 games back.
Wow, Corey Fucking Potter, there is no other way to say it, CFP is a gem of a find.
ReplyDeleteOh yeah, and those kids on offence ain't bad either. Indeed, one could argue that all 3 are better than expected.
HOPEFULLY THEY PLAY THE INTERMISSION!
ReplyDeleteOh and this Ruskie goalie we found in the trenches of Arizona could just be the goalie of the future!
ReplyDeleteBook'em Dan O'
ReplyDeleteDitto on the Potter love. I can't belive they picked this guy out of thin air.
ReplyDeleteI think Agent Hopkins just stole Hemskys power play job.
Eberle is ridiculous.
Is Perreault serious about thouse shoulder pads?
crudgist: The Nigerian Craigs List
Thus far, RNH is a much better fit for the PP than Hemsky. Watching Hemsky, it always seemed like he felt awkward when they set up the the PP - his game seems better in transition at EV.
ReplyDeleteIt's also nice to see an officiating team actually call those crappy little penalties for once. This is what the post-lockout world is supposed to be. They need to stick this crew on Minnesota and just have them follow that team.
Well, the only really bad thing about the Oilers early on has been their third period play.
ReplyDeleteSo let's see how they do in this one now that they have the lead and are playing a superior team.
Speaking of 44, there was one play he made in the middle of the second where things were starting to get hairy and he just slowed everything down and made a nice backhand pass to start a breakout. I really don't know where this guy was hiding even though we know there are a few guys in the minors who could play given a chance.
Also, 24 is playing his way out of the league. Brutal stuff every second shift.
The biggest difference I'm noticing between this year's PP and the last couple of years, is that the young guy's are operating down low around the net whereas before, it was always perimeter based and primarily Hemmer skating around the half boards.
ReplyDeletePB: yes, there are all kinds of cross-crease pass attempts which I am personally a big fan of.
ReplyDeleteYeah Dennis, Peckham needs to pick it up or he might be switching roster spots with 58. I'd still like to see 91 or 56 get a shot with 10-94. Jones just seems lost out there.
ReplyDeletePotter is the new Spacek
ReplyDeleteWhen you are passing the puck down low, anything can happen. A good bounce and it's on someone's stick or even in the net. Detroit does that shit all the time. How many times over the last couple of year's have the Oiler's went PP after PP without the opposing goalie even having to make a save?
ReplyDeleteShitty rookie like give away by 89 there.
ReplyDeleteRyan Smyth is PK platinum.
ReplyDelete89 Doesn't look like he has the wheels to be in this game.
ReplyDelete89 really accomplishes fuck all!!
ReplyDeleteHmm Petrell is a flawed player. He doesn't have much of a head for moving the puck under pressure.
ReplyDeleteSomebody check Arizona's prisons - I think that's actually Oscar Bluth.
ReplyDelete89 is coming off 2 sprained ankles, and is far from 100%.
ReplyDeleteBarker strips Ovechkin of the puck.
ReplyDeleteI know its still early in the season but man Peckham has been totally useless.
ReplyDelete2 out. 1 on, down by 2 in the bottom of the 9th. fyi
ReplyDeleteSomeone should call rickibear and make sure hes ok.
ReplyDeletesorry 1 out
ReplyDeletewww.imnikolai.com
ReplyDeleteYea we haven't seen him around lately. I supose going full bore onto how RNH was an aweful player and the wrong choice would make it rather awkward to discuss these games.
ReplyDeleteBoudreau keeps trying to sneak #8 out there against the kids.
ReplyDeletefuck off. tie gam,e, botom of the 9th
ReplyDeleteHere we go.
ReplyDeleteGreat night to be a sports fan. 2 run Triple to tie the game and Khabi is having a great night for the Oil.
ReplyDeleteWow, running the kids out now? That's a sign of confidence.
ReplyDeleteWell that was fin stupid. That's a penalty any night.
ReplyDeleteSutton, Sutton, Sutton.
ReplyDeleteSutton.
Sutton, 2 minutes for being tall.
ReplyDeleteI don't care if this isn't real, I am enjoying the ride.
khabby got a piece of that Ovechkin bullet
ReplyDeleteAny question about the #1 star?
ReplyDeleteThe Bulin Wall is back, at least for a night.
LT: I think your Khabi prediction will fall short.
ReplyDeleteBut that's hindsight lol. Pure.
I think that's a win we can safely say involved luck and a lot of hard work.
ReplyDeleteHand it to Khabibulin. He's been very good to start this season.
MVP!!
ReplyDeleteWell F me ... A Khabby chant. Good for him.
ReplyDeleteFantastic Oilers win, but it's been hard to pay attention the last hour with that insane baseball game also going on...
ReplyDeleteSo, has Khaby vindicated himself yet?
MVP!
ReplyDeleteMVP!
MVP!!!
Amazing start for Khabby.
Can't continue forever, but hope it continues for a while.
CFP. Corey Freakin Potter.
ReplyDeleteThe guy is cool hand Luke. Sign him long term.
Oh and damn. Might be just off by a year if the Rangers can close it.
ReplyDeleteWe just beat the best team in the NHL. I think the parade should start around 124th street and progress towards Rexall initially along Jasper.
ReplyDeleteMight have jinxed the Rangers.
ReplyDeleteBack to Back over the Canucks and the Capitals.
ReplyDeleteWow
Jesus-we were playing with fire there but it's our 2 points now.
ReplyDeleteWhat was it that MacT said about streaks/slumps...you lose a couple near the end of a slump that you should have won and you win a couple at the end of a streak that you probably should have lost.
"beat" might be a strong word for it, but it's all to the good, however it's done.
ReplyDeleteA man on 3rd. Down by one run. One out and Pujols on deck.
ReplyDeleteWS on the line....
Great win. But boy that 3rd line needs to start creating some scoring.
ReplyDeleteYou don't like the way the oilers played in the third period, as they just got dominated out there and looked tentative from the hop. You knew a caps push back was coming, but the oilers have to do better than just sit on one goal and pray.
ReplyDeleteBut playoff teams win games like this, and with Khabby standing tall, plus a little puck luck, the oilers held firm.
Is this for real? Can we be a playoff team? I've always said we can. It will be determined by whether the D can hold up, the goaltenders can keep up their strong play, and, seemingly, whether we can get any scoring from people not on the kids line. If only MPS, Omark, and Gagner could find some confidence, we could be a dangerous team.
And its time that Jones gets switched off the second line. He's not the motor that is making that machine run.
Khabby's best night as an oiler. Must feel good for him after everything that has transpired since his signing here.
SHould we be trying to sell khabi well the price is high. Iknow a few teams who need a goalie. CLB and TB. He's been amazing so far.
ReplyDelete3rd line is gimped offensively as long as Belanger is centering it.
ReplyDeleteGuy's a heck of a player at what he does well, but he's not going to create offense or jump into a play and let the defense get caught in an odd man break.
FPB: down 2.
Wouldn't shock me if they tie it again...
bookie: That was me. Happy to be wrong, here's hoping something doesn't fall off along the way.
ReplyDeleteWinnipeg with 9 different goal scorers tonight...Edmonton Oilers leading the NW...am I losing my mind?
ReplyDeleterick:
ReplyDeleteAnd now Pujols at bat. With the WS on the line....
They walk him?
They should lose by forfeit.
Lance Berkman just says: I'm a guy with power.
ReplyDeleteIt's a thrilla... it's a shilla.
It's really too bad - taking that opportunity away from Pujols in possibly his last game as a Card.
ReplyDeleteSuch is baseball
Ouuhhhhh Berkman wanted to pelt it.
ReplyDeleteRick: I don't think it's enough to just blame the 3rd line's offensive woes on Belanger. The guy has some offence (put up at least 13 goals and 40 points the last 2 years). He's not going to lead your team in scoring, but he's not going to drag a line down either.
ReplyDeleteThe best remedy is probably to get 3 players to actually stay healthy and play together for more than a couple games. By my recollection, they haven't fielded the same personnel on that line for more than 2 games.
what an awesome baseball game. tied in the 10th now
ReplyDeleteOuhhhhh did it just fire back right at them!
ReplyDeleteBeing a pitcher on either side is a horrible business.
ReplyDeleteWow.
ReplyDeleteTwice the Rangers are a strike away from winning it all, and twice it slips away.
Crazy.
LT - I sent the Oilers a glue factory pamphlet with Khabi's name on it. I hope he mentors DD well this season and/or plays like this right through the cup finals.
ReplyDeleteBeing a pitcher on either side is a horrible business.
ReplyDeleteYes, just horrible, I wouldn't do it for a million dollars!
Goddamn you baseball.
ReplyDeleteI have classes to attend to!
Bookie: Should have had a chat with Carson Palmer.
ReplyDeleteIt was a great win given the comp and of course you're not gonna play teams as good as the Caps every night.
ReplyDeleteStill, they could have lost 5-2 and you couldn't have blamed Rehabby one goddman bit so tonight wasn;t good enough in that sense.
And they really don't understand how to play in the third period, either.
I believe I just heard Renney way Whitney was 3 weeks.
ReplyDeleteGD: yes, I just saw it on Twitter. no surprise there.
ReplyDeleteKhabibulin might become the first goalie in league history to double his save percentage from one year to the next.
ReplyDeletepeckham looks terrible. call up petry or Tuebert. And I hope Omark gets to play next game since our 5 v 5 is lacking except for the kids
ReplyDeleteReality. 3 kids, a no name D and an old alcoholic goaltender carrying a team. Nine other forwards doing fuck all... some less than fuck all. But I guess 2 points is 2 points. This will catch up to them.
ReplyDeleteI think we've enjoyed the 9 game honeymoon and the heavy lifting starts tomorrow in Colorado.Tough schedule over the next 3 weeks. It's kind of fun to actually enjoy the game and the results-I had forgotten what that felt like.
ReplyDeleteSS-good news recently re:Arrested Development-a handful of new episodes followed by a movie.
You folks realize that other than that first game against Pitsburg, all of the wins for the Oilers have been legitimate bettman-point-free wins. And the games that have gone into OT and the Shootout were against the wild - a team the Oilers haven't been able to buy points from for years.
ReplyDeleteWhile I am also suffering from a great deal of disbeleif regarding the team that has dawned the orange and blue this year, some of the facts are pointing to a team that might be the best we've seen since 05-06.
EDM, DAL and COL in the top 5 in the west. Enjoy it while it lasts.
ReplyDeleteCLB loses again. 1 win in their first 10. The noose must be tightening. They are going to fire more than an assistant.
The other nine guys don't bleed chances. The offense will come.
ReplyDeleteI believe Paajarvi drew the penalty in front of the net(on which he might have scored) which led to a PP goal.
wow
ReplyDelete3 weeks for Whitney..?
ReplyDeleteffs
I thinking getting another D is even more parmount now.
wow
ReplyDeleteI think LT should keep picking the other team to win. This could be the new Stan Weir.
ReplyDeleteI don't even know what to say about that ball game. This entire post-season has been incredible.
