What Do We Have Here?

When the Edmonton Oilers signed Taylor Fedun in early March of this year, we took note of it and then discussed more pressing issues.

In my post about the signing, I mentioned how encouraging it was that the organization was using this means of procurement (signing undrafted college free agents to reasonable pro contracts as they finish school).

I mentioned that not much was known about Fedun as a prospect aside from the fact that he had NHL size (6.01, 210) and was an older prospect (22 at the time). I also did a quick comparison between Fedun and Jeff Petry at the same age (NCAA numbers) and found them to be similar.

I always wait awhile to find out about these players because there was so little info available when he signed. A few months later and we know a few things. We've heard about hovercrafts and we know he was the captain at Princeton and that they play in a lesser NCAA division.

We also know his situational stats from a year ago:
  • Overall: 29gp, 10-12-22 +8
  • Even strength 29gp, 3-6-9
  • Powerplay: 29gp, 7-6-13
  • Penalty kill: 29gp, 0-0-0
We also know that he's a local boy, played for the Spruce Grove Saints (wore an A) and we even have a couple of words about his style of play.
  • Fedun talking about Fedun"I think the positives in my game are good first pass out of the D-zone and, this year, I had a chance to play the power play.”
  • Rick Olczyk talking about Fedun: "We’ve been targeting Taylor for a couple of years ... strong kid, fierce competitor, good leadership on and off the ice. And he’s obviously a smart kid. He’ll be fine (if he doesn’t make it to the NHL) coming out of that school. We've got room for him in Oklahoma City, the rest is up to him."

Wonder if his presence makes Petry more expendable in the eyes of the Oilers?

That would be SOP for the Oilers.

  6. Equal to my desire to see Hall, Eberle, Paajarvi and the rest soar, is my hope that we have a couple of homeruns in the organization. Having a kid like this develop mostly out of left field is the kind of luck we'll need to make trades with strong returns down the line.

I'd be interested in seeing a comparison between college UFA and CHL over-agers in terms of NHL games played.

My gut tells me that college guys have more NHL games given that:

-CHL is more heavily scouted than college ranks
-a 22 year old college graduate is more likely to be mature and have "a head for the game", than an un-drafted CHLer.

Nothing to back up my assertion than intuition.

Any one have more spare time than a day of an active 2 year old to look deeper at this?

If they were targeting him, why not take him with your 7th last year instead of Dee?

If they had a handshake deal that he would sign upon graduating I could see it, but how sick would you feel if you heard:

"With the 205th pick in the 2011 draft, the Detroit Red Wings select Tyler Fedun"

Obviously that wasn't a concern as the Oilers got their man, and the number NCAA over-agers that get drafted is miniscule, but why not remove the uncertainty?

There is an imbalance in OKC as well. A guy like Potter, if he plays lights out, could end up stealing a spot on the big club.

I don't mind that imbalance weighted towards RH in AHL.

RH NHL Dmen are far tougher to find than LH.

If you can grow a pile of RH Dmen you are growing an in-demand commodity, which is a pretty good thing.

I think its somewhat of a pleasantry, kind of like when you tell grandma that you always look forward to her kale and raisin muffins.

I am not saying that they didn't have a eye on the guy, but at the time (a year ago)they probably had him ranked somewhere below their 7th round pick in terms of value.

I think that pro sports teams use lots of these false pleasnatries - kind of like when they say things like MVP or the starting job is his to lose.

  20. We severely over-rate a lot of our young talent on this board.

I would trade Petry and the 2013 second rounder to the Blackhawks for Campoli in a heartbeat. I'd rather have a 27 yr old, true top 4 guy and sign him to a 4 year, $11M deal than wait for the possibility Petry turns out to be a top guy down the road.

We still have Marancin, Teubert (who damn near everyone thought had moderate value when the trade occured), Klefbom and Musil coming down the pipe.

  21. The woman in her underpants is saying the Jets have asked for Smid instead of Petry.

    ReplyDelete
  22. I don't know what to make of the general Gagner for Bogosian stuff, but as for the Petry to Smid change, I'm not sure how much of a complication that would be for the Oilers.

Smid is obviously more proven, but he's also more expensive, a LH shot, and two years closer to UFA status. I'm not sure which one they think would be more likely to stay past UFA age (probably Smid, but that's a guess), or which one they think has more upside and "fits better" with their future core?

    ReplyDelete
  23. well, I don't like the deal if it's Gagner for Bogosian straight up.

I like Petry more than Smid because I think he'll be a better player with more range of skills. But the deal breaker for me is Gagner.

    I wouldn't do that deal.

    ReplyDelete
  24. That's a lot to pay for Bogosian-the kid has some nice things but he's no sure thing.

And if I'm trading Gagner I'm not sure I would have traded Cogs.

    ReplyDelete
  25. A thought on Gagner I've been meaning to ask you about, LT:

I keep thinking what Samwise needs the most is to play on a winning team. In all the dressing room shots I saw in "Oil Change", he looked like a guy who wanted to put his head in an oven.

I'm sure there's no way to quantify the effect of "learned helplessness" on the development of a young hockey player, but four years out of the playoffs and two seasons DFL seem to be wearing on him. He said all the right things in interviews last season, but without much conviction.

If the W's ever start piling up, I think we'd see a big leap forward for him. This seems like exactly the wrong time to trade him.

    What do you think?

Is this related to Petry being unhappy about being sent down last season?

  27. I don't know that I'd be anxious to deal Gagner yet either.

I'm just saying that if EDM were actually willing to part with Petry and Gagner for Bogosian, I wouldn't be at all surprised if they would also be willing to part with Smid and Gagner for Bogosian.

    Are you nuts?

I don't want to follow an actual good hockey team. I want to think about one that looks good on paper in about 3-4 years. Thank god I'm an Oilers fan.

Let's just fill in the 2016 depth chart with presumptive first round draft picks and drown Stu MacGregor in "bullets". He should have more bullets than the Allies in WWII and The Expendables combined. In the meantime, we can trade for as many failed first rounders as possible.

  29. The fact that the Oilers would would not give up Smid but would give up Petry shows where the Oilers headspace is on this one.

Subliminaly, the Jets would be doing us a favor by taking Smid instead of Petry.

  33. I don't mind the move depending on the and part at all.

we need to transfer some of our forward potential into defense potential.

The value of a smid or petry is way too much sweetner though. If we are adding, it's more a shifting of contracts.

I sad it on the last post but

    Gagner, Plante & Chorney

    for

    Bogo, and some picks.

It hands the jets two guys that still have some potential, clears up a bit of a logjam and we you draw it all up on paper the log jam up front is probably a year away.

C: Horcoff, Belanger, RNH, Lander, VV, Omara, Kyntar

RW: Hemmer, Eberle, Omark, Pitlick, etc.

LW: Hall, Smyth, MPS, Hart, Eager, etc.

In the mix: Hamilton among others

A lot of this comes down to a Hemsky extension obviously but I hope in a years time that RNH will be taking his spin as a rookie in the 2C. This does seem to make Gagner somewhat redundant.

Bogo is of similar age and provides a great deal more potential in a spot that needs some reinforcement.

Sending a smid or a petry kind of robs peter to pay paul, imo.

  41. Brownlee raises the point that Corey Potter provides decent blue line depth too, and Renney knows him well.

The back end of the back end has depth coming out of its ass. The front end of the back end is a bit short though. We've been begging for a many for one trade that sees the best player coming back the other way. Is Bogosian clearly the best player in any trade that involves Gagner? Gagner does have some redundant traits and he plays in an area of depth. Shouldn't he able to bring Bogo himself, though?

    ReplyDelete
  42. Idk why Bogo's such a high priced thing.

They're basically shopping him around and we're getting hassled.

    ReplyDelete
  43. It's difficult to evaluate F for D trades. Can't do it on a point for point basis. So how do we know a deal is right? Gagner is becoming redundant in terms of skillset. We have plenty of playmakers. So isn't he the perfect candidate for rebalancing skill from F to D? We'll never recapture the offense but we shouldn't expect to when trading for D.

    ReplyDelete
  44. Spoiler: I just think it'S a horrible deal market wise.

Bogosian has all the things to be a ''low risk high profit'' kind of trade.

Pedigree, early severe injury (Broken leg), statistical constant regression.

But they're asking for a lot. I wouldn't do it. I'm sure there's better to find at that price. (Sekera for cheaper)

    ReplyDelete
  45. Gagner does have some redundant traits and he plays in an area of depth.

Where's the depth? The Oilers are down to three proven centers including Gagner. If they deal him now too, then what? Horcoff, Belanger, a 170 lb rookie and a stiff like O'Marra? Or maybe yet another rookie like Lander?

Perhaps we can relive 2007-2008 and start two rookie centers at the same time again. That worked out well.

    ReplyDelete
  46. FPB...

He has way more upside than Sekera. To play the kind of minutes he has at his age is very rare for Dmen. It has become more common since the lockout, but almost all the guys who have done it without getting drowning appear to be blue chipn. Another side is we can't discount other bids.

Sekera has posted one 24 yr old year as good as Bogo's 18yo, 19 yo, and 20 yo years. He's smaller too. These are not the same defenseman.

Bogo's one year regression is irrelevant at his age. Kids do not develop in astraight line, especially since his team hired and employed vets ahead of him.

Do we want to be left out, wallflowers at the Bogo Dance Party, or do we want a dance partner?

And the nice thing is he doesn't have the counting numbers to be too expensive.

We missed out on Burns and Franson, despite it being evident that they were going to be moved. Bogo will have to be too, he doesn't fit the way they have the other WPG D salaries are structured... But there may be other bidders like CBJ involved.

  47. RQ....

Would you agree D is a bigger mess moving forward than F? Is this really about thinking only short term about next year?

Would you also agree that replacement level for a 4 year C over a rook is nowhere near as great a divide as it is for a truly vet C? Especially if the replacement has been playing against men himself for 2 years?

Would you also agree Brulé is still on the roster (agreed tho', I don't like him much either).

    ReplyDelete
  48. And hey, if we could get Bogo for Omarkx Plante and a 3rd, I'm all for it.

    ReplyDelete
  49. Would you agree D is a bigger mess moving forward than F?

It's really bad right now. Moving forward depends on how far we're talking. There are a few decent prospects in the system.

Is this really about thinking only short term about next year?

No, it is possible to fuck up prospects. I'd rather not see Lander or RNH be put in a position to fail as repeatedly as the Oilers did with Gagner and Cogliano.

Would you also agree that replacement level for a 4 year C over a rook is nowhere near as great a divide as it is for a truly vet C?

No, not necessarily. Also Gagner counts as a truly veteran C at this point.

Especially if the replacement has been playing against men himself for 2 years?

Let's not get carried away here. It's safe to assume Swedish teams are in it to win it. If so, Lander has had one year at most with real responsibility playing against men and maybe not even that.

Would you also agree Brulé is still on the roster (agreed tho', I don't like him much either).

Brule has serious problems and generally sucks anyway. Probably another good example to watch how you treat rookie centers though. MacLean did CBJ and Brule no favours with the way they handled his career.

    ReplyDelete
  50. I wouldn't deal Omark either.

Veteran dmen are available all the time via trade and free agency. The Oilers used to be pretty good at this and can be again. I really don't see the rush here for Bogosian. Deal prospects and picks for him if necessary.

    ReplyDelete
  51. Really? You would rely on Gagner right now the same way you would rely on Horc or Belanger?

D is a bigger mess, and we do have time. Let's attend to it while we do.

Lander's TOI show he was relied on this past year. Also the comments that he was Sweden's best non NHL player at their WHC camp are fairly telling.

We ain't winning nothing this year any way, might as well use it to find some balance for the future. Brule would be serviceable for a half year at 4C while Lander rips the cover off in Triple A for 40 games, if needs be.

    ReplyDelete
  52. Yeah vet bottom half Dmen are available to playoff teams willing to overpay for botom end depth in the short term for disappearing contracts, but that's the situation we're in, is it? Come on, Rivers.

    ReplyDelete
  53. And not dealing Omark for Bogo is just plain stupid.

    ReplyDelete
  54. Inexperience is one thing, being the difference maker that begins the drive up is another.

I remember an Oiler team that was loaded with rookies, but brought so much heat that opponents knew it was only a matter of time.

Losing based on defensive lapses at key moments because of a burning desire to score (Hall) is different than not having enough tools or fire to begin with and still giving up the goal against (Gagner).

    ReplyDelete
  55. Really? You would rely on Gagner right now the same way you would rely on Horc or Belanger?

Where did you get that from what I said?

D is a bigger mess, and we do have time. Let's attend to it while we do.

Oh yeah, nothing but time. The management team has already set the franchise record for missing the playoffs. What's another 2-3 years?

Lander's TOI show he was relied on this past year. Also the comments that he was Sweden's best non NHL player at their WHC camp are fairly telling.

So maybe one year in the SEL? WHC comments? Please.

We ain't winning nothing this year any way, might as well use it to find some balance for the future. Brule would be serviceable for a half year at 4C while Lander rips the cover off in Triple A for 40 games, if needs be.

Nope, the Oilers aren't winning anything this year. We can agree there. I don't see dealing Gagner or Omark as appropriate at this point in time. Both players have had promising starts to their careers and are NHLers right now.

    ReplyDelete
  56. Yeah vet bottom half Dmen are available to playoff teams willing to overpay for botom end depth in the short term for disappearing contracts, but that's the situation we're in, is it?

What position were the Oilers in when they acquired Staios? And how about Hejda? Quit settling for endless mindnumbing mediocrity.

You don't have to build a team entirely through the draft or by acquiring fucking former first round picks. The Oilers and their fans used to recognize that.

    ReplyDelete
  57. Spoiler: No it's not.

Bogo's never posted good results. Exept for his first year where he broke a leg.

It's not that his numbers should be better, it's just that he hasn't been sheltered and don't know if sheltering will be enough to make him effective.

This year his offensive production at ES was in the Steve Macintyre range.

Neither do we know if we can do that.

I'd rather pay a much smaller fee for guys who will ressemble him, but much less notorious.

Idk how do you relate himhim to Sekera. Anyway.

    ReplyDelete
  58. Hey LT, your boy signed in PHO today. Looks like he was pretty solid in the minors last year.

    ReplyDelete
  59. And not dealing Omark for Bogo is just plain stupid.

Boy, you sound awfully sure about that.

I was quite impressed with Omark's performance last year. He looks like a player that can drive results. Why not trade a player that probably hasn't proven capable of that at the NHL level?

Sure would be nice to have Cogliano as a chip for that kind of trade right now. Too bad the Oilers "needed to space out the talent" with a 2013 pick. If they really believed that kind of thinking they wouldn't have started the clock on ELCs for three first round pick forwards in the same worthless season.

    ReplyDelete
  60. FPB, the age difference is huge.

RQ: same here. Playing D in the NHL at Bogo's age is pretty impressive. He's survived among the best men the world has to offer. Omark turns 25 this year and has one year under his belt and so far has done the same with some AHL transition time...

I know where I would place my bet.

    ReplyDelete
