RE 11-12: Lennart Petrell

The Edmonton Oilers pro scouts may have found something in Lennart Petrell. He's a 6.03, 209 pound 27-year old winger with a reputation of being a solid defensive forward.

He has good footspeed but doesn't finish. Wow, sounds like he's a born Oiler. His NHLE (82gp, 10-18-28) would seem to support that bio and his salary (according to capgeek, his one-year two way contract has a $900,000 cap hit, includes a $90,000 bonus and he'll make $67,500 in the AHL this year) would seem to suggest the same.

Elite Prospects: A large winger with a lot of power and strength. Plays with high energy and intensity. Effective on the forecheck and always finishes his checks. Good hands and hockey sense.

Lots of places say he's a winger but a few call him a center. For me, the Oilers are extremely likely to use him as a checking winger both in the AHL and NHL. If that's his experience, he will have more of it than most of the Oiler hires and that might mean he's also a strong option for things like PK and late game defensive zone faceoffs.

Petrell's resume is full of things you'll love: he knocked out Michal Barinka at the WJ's on a questionable hit many years ago; he had a solid offensive season in 10-11 and an even better playoff run. He's played 350 games in the SM-Liiga so has plenty of pro experience.

OKC Prediction for 11-12: 70gp, 17-23-40 (.571)
NHL Prediction for 11-12: 10gp, 1-1-2 (.200)

  1. You have him on LW? Yeah, I think there should be a chance to get a look at him sometime this season. The Oilers signed him for just the one year, I imagine they'll want to get a good look at him before deciding how to proceed.
  2. What role do you see him filling? Two way winger, penalty kill and maybe he'll grow into a regular role at evens.
  3. Who would he replace? Well injuries probably, and maybe eventually someone like Ryan Jones.
  4. This guy won't score 17 goals. Neither will Jones (probably). If Petrell can add to the penalty killing options and play a solid 2-way game I think the Oilers will make room for him.
  5. Does anyone think he'll play in the NHL? I think both the player and agent thought there was a chance based on the contract, and that means the team must have felt there was a chance too. It's a two way deal and $220,000 in performance bonuses. It's a 900k cap touch if all the columns get checked off.
  6. What are his skills again? Big guy with speed and an idea about the forecheck. He's 27 and posted some decent offensive numbers this past season in the SM-Liiga.
  7. Is this the Pisani? Maybe, he's at least a candidate. Look, the Oilers badly need a guy like Pisani to help on the PK and give the coach another option.
  8. More like the Reddox. Fine, Reddox with speed and more size. I don't give a rat's ass who you compare him too, this a player the Oilers need badly.
  9. Can't Ryan Smyth fill that role? Sure, but I'm sure the Oilers would want him to help on the PP and perhaps Petrell can free up some special teams time for Smyth. Besides even with Smyth this team needs PK help.
  10. Who are your PK forwards among the current starters? I'd go Horcoff and Belanger at center, and then wingers might be Ryan Smyth and Ryan Jones.
  11. So Petrell gets called up and plays well on the PK and scores a little at evens. What then? Sign him for crying out loud! The Oilers aren't exactly overrun with PK forwards.
  12. But they'll have to flush Ryan Jones. Don't make me come over there. If Lennart Petrell can check, help the PK and be on the right side of the puck often then losing Ryan Jones to waivers or trade will be an extremely small price to pay.
  13. You think this could happen? Ryan Jones losing his job to some nobody? It WILL happen. The question we should be asking is will Lennart Petrell be that nobody.

  1. LT, you know as well as I do that Lowe and Tambellini are loathe to admit their mistakes.

Not a chance they'll gas Jones after signing him to that atrocious contract.

  2. Ryan Jones isn't good enough to be a regular NHLer on a good team, but I don't see much reason to think that Petrell is, either. And Jones makes more and, as DSF notes, has more management reputation tied up in him. I think Jones finishes the season an every-night-Oiler.

  3. 14. Was Dennis right about Ladislav Smid?

Yes, and also lots of other things. I love that guy!!

Lordy, I love this style of post. You need to argue with yourself more often.

  5. Ryan Jones sure gets a lot of dissing in the Oilogosphere. Still like him better than Omark on the 3rd line, let alone Petrell.

Petrell is likely to be this year's Giroux. He'll get a look but probably won't impress enough to stick around.

    ReplyDelete
  6. Dangerman: Do you have any basis for that? It's cool if you don't - we're all allowed our irrational affections - but I have a hard time imagining what a serious argument for Jones over Omark would look like.

    ReplyDelete
  7. He'd need to make 5M, then Tallon would be interested.

    ReplyDelete
  8. 28's deal might be the new 67 pact: Oilers re-up a guy just for the fuck of it and/or without really considering who else would be on the team.

    ReplyDelete
  9. Well Jones doesn't fit the roster makeup. He's John VanderWal and they need Dave Martinez.

    ReplyDelete
  10. Idk what's the big fuzz about Jones.

Yes the contract is stupid and he isn't that good of an NHL'er.

But so are the vast majority of 4th liners.

    That's why they're 4th liners.

At least he has some good PK tools and he's fun to watch. He can stir the pot sometimes.

Yes he has shot ''sky high'' but he has shot that all his life. Wouldn't surprise me the low assists (7) actually balance it out as a ''normal'' season.

    ReplyDelete
  11. LT: Jones is Dave Martinez.....Omark is John Vanderwal.

Jones is a versatile player that can play evens, PK and be on the power play if necessary. Omark is one-dimensional.

    ReplyDelete
  12. Got no problem with Jones as a 4th liner who moves up in a pinch for some 3rd line minutes. The whole team sucked so bad last year it's hard to say that the stats weren't out of control. Besides, if not for Jones, who would the Oilers blogosphere choose for a whipping boy? We need Jones.

What I'd really like to know is this: Lennart Petrell. WTH is this guy and when did they sign him?

stipped: To avoid paying a tip. ie. Man, Patrick Kane really stipped me.

  13. Jones in CF? I don't thimk so. Hitting the cutoff man? Jones? Nah, he'd fly it to the backstop to announce his presence with authority.

    ReplyDelete
  14. Petrell will probably need about 4 forwards to go down before he gets a taste of the big league pay cheque. So mid march sounds about right to me.

Jones strikes me as the anti stortini, except he doesn't skate too well either. Management must love him. His hairs dumb, there's no room for the second best mullet on the team, but I do love his goal celebration.

    Fuckin Rights Boys!!

Skyle-the explanation for why certain men grow mullets. Head in clouds and all that.

  15. Speaking of Jones playing CF, remember Terry Jones? That light hitting, switch hitting smurf that would 12 hop the cutoff man?

He reminded me of Andrew Cogliano with a baseball glove, all he could do was run.

    That's a walk off shot.

    Well done.

  18. Is it just me or is complaining about Ryan Jones' contract a relatively high-class problem?...

word verification: lowtscom - Lowetide's computer.

  19. On an related note, is it just me or did the Esks damn near blow their clock management tonight at the end? The snap it on 3rd and 11 with 4 seconds left and if the Stamps had been more alert they very well could have sacked Ray in that time.

It was bizzare - run the time clock out, take the penalty, line up to punt and let the kicker take a leisurely lap to kill the last 3 seconds (with safety if necessary).

Hell of a lot better than turning it over on downs on your own 25.

    Drami: well, that's appropriate.

  23. You need a theory of mind to grasp that another person might have different criteria, as opposed to faulty judgement. If the criteria are different, and the player continues to perform to those criteria, the decision makers won't find themselves operating the gas ratchet like Steve Martin in Little Shop of Horrors. (Quelle surprise to those of us with a theory of mind.)

Or you could skip theory of mind and go straight for the ego and ignorance jugular.

Criteria don't tend to change abruptly, unless one day you drive to the used coke machine wrecking yard and they refuse to take your cargo: "nope, we've got all the broken down coke machines we can handle right now".

We all know that the Oilers have been rather poor at articulating a coherent set of management criteria. More or less since forever. They seem content to bear the public cross of ego and ignorance. Since there's no theory of mind involved, it's not terribly personal, and besides, at any given time about twenty NHL management teams are slaloming through the same tomato barrage.

Or you can play it the other way and state outright "this is my criteria". Then if it all goes sideways (maybe for reasons you control or maybe not), you've really got nowhere to hide. You're hideously exposed. I wonder how long any GM would hang onto his job hosting a monthly yard sale.

There's a line toward the end of The Baroque Cycle (3000 pages concerning the years 1650-1714 so forgive me if I quote from memory) where Jack Shaftoe, King of the Vagbonds, is being marched for treason into Jack Ketch's knacking yard when he observes in his mind, "a younger man would be feeling panic now, but with experience, you learn this is the sign of a good plan". In any case, that's his style and he's sticking with it.

I think when you're in the business of handing out megabuck contracts, some measure of grim resolve is called for. You see the same theme in "Master and Commander" (not a great movie, but it does have a wonderfully authentic sound track). When you pull to for a broadside exchange, it's a lousy time to admit your mistakes.

Who in hockey is the patron saint of putting out there "I was wrong"? Perhaps we should award a Lady Byng to the management types who best exemplify taking responsibility for woeful incompetence.

Hmmmm. A quick search didn't find any suitable saints from the sports profession, but I did find a somewhat pertinent article with nice paragraphs about taking credit and resisting temptation.

  24. FPB: Who should they flush for the Pisani role? Eager and Hordichuk don't play those minutes.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Pisani minutes can be filled by any number of unsigned free agents.

    They're plentiful and cheap.

Vancouver found Torres, Higgins and Lapierre last season and paid them a pittance.

Just takes a GM who knows what he's doing.

    ReplyDelete
  26. LT: I hate those concepts of ''designed minutes''.

As far as I know you don't need Eager's and Hordichuk's.

So you shoves Jones to Hordichuk's minutes, and then put a ''Pisani'' with 800K in August.

  27. Players like Petrell give the Oilers some much needed depth.

Not only do they provide some warm bodies to fill in for injured players, you know damn sure they will do anything/everything it takes to play in the show.

These guys are going to push the bottom end of the roster and force the existing lineup to play harder. In past years the guys only had to look at the rest of the bench and realize they could dog it all they wanted, wasn't anyone there that could take their job...

    ReplyDelete
  28. I think a major consideration that I have not often seen mentioned is that Jones is as a "great guy in the room", a la Strudwick.

He is serviceable as a hockey player, and hopefully last season was not a complete aberration, but I think his character and personality have gone a long way with Oiler management.

He's the class clown, an energy guy, and a 'glue guy'. At this juncture, with an eye towards culture change, and team bonding, I think that holds a lot of weight.

If another player is somewhere in the same range, but somewhat aloof, and not a morale-boosting type of dude, you don't think Jones wins that decision every time?

Plus he said he doesn't mind the cold in Edmo... that's gotta count for something.

I agree on this point, and from the perspective of the average fan it's really tough to evaluate. I mean, if he's the guy riding shotgun with Hall at the bars, especially on the road, and keeping him out of any serious trouble... then fuck yes we should pay him.

    ReplyDelete
  31. I agree with the 'good in the room' comments.

If you have a guy who can crack a joke that totally breaks a somber mood when the team is in the dressing room down 2-0 in the second intermission, and who does it game in game out, that is gold. It is also hard to find.

By everything I have heard, Jones is that guy.

    ReplyDelete
  32. A guy who jumps over the boards with a lot of zip!

    ReplyDelete
  33. "What does this mean?"

It means he plays the type of game that the other team doesn't like while firing up his own teammates, through finishing checks or puck battles along the boards, stuff like that. It means he burns a lot of energy as opposed to being a surveyor of the game.

    ReplyDelete
  34. It means he plays the type of game that the other team doesn't like...

The other team doesn't like directing pucks at the Oilers' net?

  35. Yes, Steve, the other teams don't like directing pucks at the Oilers' net.

  36. Yes, Steve, the other teams don't like directing pucks at the Oilers' net.

The NHL must be using a lot of mood enhancers, considering how many teams routinely outshoot the Oilers.

So nothing real, or real enough to affect on-ice performance. Just checking.

  38. The NHL must be using a lot of mood enhancers, considering how many teams routinely outshoot the Oilers.

Considering how badly Jones was outshot while on the ice, his opponents must've been downing bathtubs full of mother's little helpers after each shift.

  39. I really don't have anything against 28 but that's a lot of money for a guy who's gonna be hard-pressed to get a lot of EVTOI and his best chance to be valuable is as a PKer.

So, that's a lot of cash for a guy who doesn't look like he'll have the opp to help in a lot of roles.

  41. Jones real value is he protects the kids on the Oilogosphere. People are so busy shitting on Jones 24/7 that they got no time left to shit on the young 'uns.

Buddy scored 18 goals this past season playing with plumbers and with ~0 PP time. He's also a crowd favourite (just not this crowd). There was a lot of pressure on Tambellini to get a deal done, with the name "Glencross" being brought up frequently.

He doesn't project into the top 9, but anybody who thinks the top 9 are going to play 82 games each hasn't been paying attention.
