RE 11-12: Gilbert Brule

There were times during this past season when the Oilers were shorthanded and in need of all hands on deck. In some of those times, Gilbert Brule could not answer the bell.

That more than anything probably means he's gone sooner than later.
Gilbert Brule had a tough NHL season. It leaves him at something of a crossroads. I believe there's a very good chance he'll play some minor league games this season, and I'm sincere in saying there doesn't seem to be a way to make him a part of the organization beginning 2012 summer. Too many options.

OKC Prediction for 11-12: 40gp, 16-16-32 (.800)
NHL Prediction for 11-12: 10gp, 2-1-3 (.300)

  1. What's the health problem? Concussion related, these things take time, you know. All kinds of issues, remember Adam Deadmarsh? And what about Marc Savard, poor guy missed his chance at Stanley.
  2. So you're not going to be specific? No. Brule had some issues related to concussions and that had a major impact on the team and the player. For Brule, you have to feel for the guy because it isn't like a bad shoulder or hand injury. Timeline is a tricky item.
  3. What was the LAK's problem? From what we can tell, they planned a buyout and you can't buy out an injured player. NHL lawyers turned them back before they tried.
  4. So the Oilers traded an injured player? From what we can tell, he had been cleared to play. There appears to be some grey area in this case, but I think it's reasonable to allow for the possibility that both teams were dealing in good faith.
  5. You're making no sense. Stop saying from what we can tell. There are rules in place to protect the player in these areas, and Brule may have had a setback between the time the Oilers looked at him and the trade call. I have a friend--Jeff Krushell--who has worked in various pro sports (not hockey) in North America and he tells me that most kids--not just players--but prospect kids, have a fairly long list of injuries suffered over the years. So maybe the Oilers felt the concussion was better, and maybe the NHL lawyers looked at the entirety of his injury history and felt it prudent to step back.
  6. He should be ready by fall.  One hopes, but it's a sticky wicket. Now, this is where we might hear the immortal words "it's nobody's fault, but....." and that's where we need to talk about the Oilers and Brule's impact on the team. There were times during this past season when he wasn't available--and the club was badly shorthanded--and Brule's injury history has to be considered in regard to next year's roster. If the Oilers feel that the nature of his injury means they may be short a roster spot at important times again this coming season, Brule may not make the cut out of TC.
  7. So, what trade him? That's unlikely to happen. The trade fiasco brought a lot of negative attention and I wonder if Brule has any value at this time. In order to be trade worthy, you'd think NHL GM's would want to see him healthy for a long stretch.
  8. Good lord, you're saying they are going to send him to OKC! It isn't my money, and I think Brule will get a clear chance in TC. If he can remain healthy and productive Brule is a roster player. If not, I think they'll risk waivers on him and send him down.
  9. For awhile. Once he's down there I believe the Oilers will keep him there and then set him free at the end of the season. They have options, younger kids with great potential and Brule's injury may cost him his NHL job with the Oilers.
  10. Good lord, another Souray? Nothing at all like Souray. There was a time not long ago when Brule was viewed as part of the future, but last season hurt him quite a bit as a roster player. Emplyoying Brule on the big league roster might mean being shorthanded a lot--it did last season.
  11. What on earth does he have? Concussion related problems.
  12. You already said that. Well, you can read more here and here.
  13. Okay. Good. So how do they proceed? Brule comes to camp and would have to be considered one of the 14 best forwards in the group. After that, as long as he performs at a high level and stays healthy he's an Oiler.
  14. And if he's injured? I believe the Oilers will move on. Tough, tough business.
  15. Name the 14 forwards you think the Oilers will keep to start the season. Gagner, RNH, Horcoff, Belanger, Brule, Hall, Smyth, Paajarvi, Eager, Hordichuk, Hemsky, Eberle, Omark, Jones.
  16. So, he makes the team and then plays C on the 4th line after they send RNH down. Right, except that VandeVelde, Lander, and others are waiting in the wings and Brule's style lends itself to getting banged up.
  17. What about the wingers? Could he play there? Hmmm. Not a lot of room there.
  18. So you're telling me he could be a healthy scratch? Yes. The potential is there for Brule and Hordichuk to be HS a lot, especially early in the season.
  19. What's his best chance of making the top 12F opening night. Injury to another player or playing better than Ryan Jones. Those are the available options I see.
  20. How good a chance does Brule have of spending the entire season in Edmonton? How good a chance does Gilbert Brule have of being healthy all season? NHL jobs are dear, they don't give them away to anyone. Gilbert Brule has some talent, that shot of his is terrific and he plays the game with abandon. But he played half the season a year ago and again I'll mention there were nights when the Oilers iced a shorthanded team. It happens but you can't tell me coach Renney was okay with it. I think Brule is in a tough spot for his NHL career right now.
Here's hoping it all works out.

  1. Let's keep in mind that only the last 10 games of the 41 games Brule missed were due to concussion and there is little explanation for the sudden and mysterious maladies he suffered prior to the concussion.

  2. Disappointing, what's happened to Brule.

However, I think in the best interest of the team, he's gotta be sent down to OKC. With any luck, a team will take a risk and claim him on waivers though, but very doubtful.

  3. Each of the last couple years we start out with too many forwards (or maybe I should say body's) and then injury whittles it away.

I feel bad for Brule because once more it's a case of what might have been. Would think he'd be one of the last cuts depending on what happens in camp with injuries and the makeup of the roster (are any of RNH, Lander, VVV truly ready).

Sadly, bad things happen to good people (not saying he's a great player, but he's a good person).

  4. Rightly or wrongly, "concussion related depression" is a kiss of death.

He is going to have the stigma of not being able to give it 100% - something that would concern GM's who have seen their share of talented players that don't put it all together as they don't have the right mindset.

Kudos to the Oilers for keeping it under wraps for the season. It shows respect for the player, although I guess it also was in their best interest, too.

Seems to me Lombardi was likely the source of the leak as to what was really going on. He has shown himself to be a SOB.

I hope Gilbert is able overcome his issues, but it will likely require some time in the minors. And it is unlikely to be with the Oilers due to the bevy of prospects.

    Oui, ils ne

  7. Ducey - I doubt that Lombardi was the source of the leak. Brule's condition was known by the Edmonton MSM for most of the year. My guess is Dreger himself knew and leaked it.

LT: Sending Brule down to OKC is going to be tricky. Can they waive an injured player? I don't know how the heck the CBA deals with a diagnosis like depression, but it seems to me the safest way to get him to OKC is on a conditioning stint.

  8. the sooner Brule is gone, the better as far as i'm concerned!

    ReplyDelete
  9. If Brule is healthy, then he's got to play. We've got a lot of players who are on the NHL bubble, but I don't think any of Lander, VandeVelde, O'Marra, etc. are really head and shoulders above Brule today, nor do I think they'd be better served in the pressbox rather than playing in OKC. Being a RHC works in his favour a little as well.

The only real question is going to be his health, and since I don't really know what was wrong with him to begin with, it's hard to guess whether or not he'll be ready to go for the start of this coming NHL season.

As for next year, I don't see him getting another contract, even if the above mentioned alternatives haven't proven themselves as viable options.

  10. He is going to have the stigma of not being able to give it 100%

This galls me. It's already embarrassing that so many Oilers can't be bothered to give 110% - now we have Brule who can't even manage 100? These are professional athletes, people, and I expect more than that! 150% should be considered a minimum!

(has not had coffee. finds things like this funny. please forgive!)

  11. @ coach

If he's hurt, then they don't have to send him down. They can put him on IR and bring in someone to replace him. Once he's healthy they can waive him if they like.

If he's not considered injured (re: depression), then they should be able to waive him. If he is, then they can put him on IR.

    ReplyDelete
  12. @misfit

I get that, but how does the CBA deal with a diagnosis like this? The player can always argue that he's injured because he suffers from depression.

    ReplyDelete
  13. If it's concussion related depression he has a solid case for maintaining injury status, and I have absolutely no problem with that.

Post-concussion complications are part of the injury, and can be devastating.

    ReplyDelete
  14. So if Brule is able to play come fall I expect he is our 4th line centre. The Oilers are always loathe to risk a player to waivers, and since Lander can play in the minors without clearing, and RNH can be sent back to junior, I expect the 12th/13th forward to be Brule. If he plays well then you have an asset with value, if he plays poorly then you swap him for Lander and send him down to clear his ca (not that that is a real concern). He is basically like Barker, a one year no risk chance. He can play limited minutes if the kids aren't ready, and if he performs well he either gets a new contract or he is trade bait since he is still an RFA next season.

    ReplyDelete
  15. I'd prefer Brule over CVV and O'Marra.

    Lander we'll have to wait.

I think Hordichuk shouldn't really have been there in the first place.

I would have been pleased with Brule and O'marra up there.

    ReplyDelete
  16. @uni

Nor do I. It's just very complicated under the CBA.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Derek,

The MSM has known all year about an injury that occured in March?

    ReplyDelete
  18. From TSN:

Agent Mark Gandler and Islanders general manager Garth Snow both confirmed to Newsday on Friday that the two sides have had discussions about Yashin returning with the team. Gandler also confirmed to Sovietsky Sport on Friday that the Islanders were the lone NHL team interested in bringing him back.

"At this time we are negotiating with the Islanders and are seriously considering their offer," he told the Russian news site.

In June of 2007, the Islanders bought out the final four years of Yashin's 10-year, $87.5 million contract signed in 2001. The remainder of the deal is a $2.2 million cap hit for the Islanders which goes through the 2014-15 NHL season.

    *Insert joke/sarcastic remark here*

  19. As MacT and Einstein would say...

Insanity: doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.

    ReplyDelete
  20. If you buy out a player's contract and then resign him, would both contracts count against the cap?

    Crazy

    ReplyDelete
  21. At the same time when he was bought out, he popped 50 points in 58 games with +6.

Probably the most non-hockey buyout ever.

    ReplyDelete
  22. The injury didn't occur in March, that's pretty clear.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Shane: No. I just don't want this to become piling on. Hope you understand.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Derek....

According to websites like TSN and THN, Brule was clearly not listed with a concussion till Mar 17. Do you have other pretty clear info?

    ReplyDelete
  25. It really is a pity what has happened to Brule. I live in Vancouver and used to watch him with the Giants when he was in junior and I was really, very pleased when the Oilers got him out of Columbus. I always thought he would make an elite 3rd line center who could handle time on he 2nd and on the wings. Looks like, at this point, that it's not meant to be.

It's a shame, he really is a good person. Let's hope he can get healthy and get his career back on track.

    ReplyDelete
  26. spoiler:

refer to Tyler's post. The "mysterious" malady affected Brule for the entire season.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Derek,

I believe I made reference to those same mysterious maladies in the very first post above.

The longest injury being attributed to abdominal strain.

He has no concussion listed in the previous 6 years worth of injuries.

What is your source that Brule has been suffering from CRD for most of the year?

Or is this just speculation on your part?

    ReplyDelete
  28. On a happier note, the new Jets emblem looks pretty cool, although I was worried on my first glance that they were using the CF-104 "Widowmaker" for the jet silhouette. It isn't.

    ReplyDelete
  29. That's like the Kings, whose first uniform boasted a Queen's crown. Seriously.

Those 3 are magnificent pieces of art.

And we chose garbage over it (not mentionning the old ones)

    ReplyDelete
  31. LT: Nope. Mental spasm. Or somehow I tought it was a form of speech.

    ReplyDelete
  32. This might come as a shock to you FPB, but art and beauty are matters of personal taste.

And several Oilers are going to be very happy that there's going to be a bulls eye on the Jet goalie's chest.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Spoiler,

But with Moreau gone last year and now Cogs this year, the only player who needs a bullseye to shoot at is Smid.

    LOL

    ReplyDelete
  34. Spoiler: This might come as a shock to you, but when we speak of art, more or less.

If you don't have a message, and don't have technique, you ain't got much.

As for the Jets logo, if you find it nice, good for you, but I think it's atrocious.

    ReplyDelete
  35. C'mon, dude, I know you don't like it (and there's nothing wrong with that), but your statements seem way over the top and seem to extend beyond acknowledging one's own personal taste. Now maybe I'm reading your intent wrong, and if so, I do apologize.

And the logo quite clearly has a message and was executed with technique (they coloured within all the lines). It lacks a little baroque motion for something "jetty" maybe, but it certainly does play on patriotism and battle.

And let's keep in mind that there's a big difference between art and Art. The second one likely has no place on the chests of a hockey team.

I did a quick office poll in between posts and not one person here did not like it. The most common descriptors were "cool" and "like the military look".

    Certainly artier than CH.

    ReplyDelete
  36. I like it. It makes me believe the Expos will come back someday. Powder blues and maybe a logo that makes sense.

    ReplyDelete
  37. I have to agree. There are worse logos in the NHL right now than the new Jets logo.

As for poor Mr. Brule, I don't think he can even earn a roster spot with the team this fall if he is less than 100% all the time all through training camp and exhibition games. He is definitely fighting to salvage his career and put up some numbers/games to make him more attractive to another team next season. I think Jones' contract not only sunk Cogliano in Edmonton, but Brule too.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Spoiler: Justly so.

It looks like something on a military uniform.

    Not a hockey jersey.

Like if a US team would put the air force sign and a USA flag on one of their team's jersey.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Or if a Canadian team would put a Maple Leaf on their jersey?

    ReplyDelete
  40. Also, we should celebrate our troops in all fashions. Man, we need more not less patriotism in this country.

    ReplyDelete
  41. Bar Qu: Never said I liked it.

At the time the leafs made their jerseys there was no maple leaf on the flag anyway (I believe).

    ReplyDelete
  42. I thought maybe I was looking at Labatt or Molsons newest logo creations when I first panned them.

I don't mind them, though. Could be worse.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Like if a US team would put the air force sign and a USA flag on one of their team's jersey.

Or a giant star with the state flag wrapped around it?

At the time the leafs made their jerseys there was no maple leaf on the flag anyway (I believe).

The original jersey in 1927, no, but the maple leaf has been a Canadian symbol since Confederation. The modern Leafs leaf was born in 1967, two years after the new flag was released, and modelled after the flag leaf.

I dunno, I really like it. RCAF roundel, jet overtop, little notch pointing north as a much more subtle nod to the Corporate Overlords than some Canadian teams I could mention. Doesn't have to be a fucking art project with six colours and a hundred tiny details; sometimes a simple logo is fine. In fact, a simple logo is almost always better, IMO. Tends to stand the test of time much better.

    ReplyDelete
  44. That Canucks logo is garbage. Man that's bad.

    ReplyDelete
  45. At the time the leafs made their jerseys there was no maple leaf on the flag anyway (I believe).

The curent flag did not exist until 1965, so yeah.

I've got to agree with FPB, those new Jets logos are complete rip-offs of military insignia. Great for the CAF, not so much for a hockey jersey.

    ReplyDelete
  46. Doogie: Well the CBJ's jersey ain't too bright either.

I would just have liked the old tiny jet.

    ReplyDelete
  47. What's clear is that Brule has been messed up for awhile. Concussion never entered the discussion until he ran somebody in Pittsburgh - Letang wasn't it? - head first and more or less knocked them both out. Just a terrible hit, a self induced cOncussion. Didn't Brule get a penalty on the play?

At least it was a play where you could see how he hurt himself. All those other absences before that were poorly or unexplained.

    ReplyDelete
  48. Brule has all day to read everything the internet says about him.

    No wonder he's depressed.

    ReplyDelete
  49. I've got to agree with FPB, those new Jets logos are complete rip-offs of military insignia. Great for the CAF, not so much for a hockey jersey.

They were designed in consultation with the Canadian Forces and 17 Wing, whom TNSE have had a long-standing partnership with for Military Night promotions. So not a rip-off, but a very conscious and mutually agreed-upon homage.

Doogie: Well the CBJ's jersey ain't too bright either.

I would just have liked the old tiny jet.

Sure, that's fair. I just don't think it's the crime against good taste some are insinuating.

  50. 'of the Oilers moving forward. Once healthy he will be on waivers and sent down if no one picks him up.'

the bikini girl is filled with secrets that are made non-secrets.

'That Canucks logo is garbage. Man that's bad.'

What? That giant VANCOUVER in white letters isn't beautifully accented by that...is that a whale jumping out of a half C? how did it fit in that C to begin with? it's clearly bigger than that ugly C.

    ReplyDelete
  51. Its an ok logo. It strikes me as a design by committee result, where a series of mockups and revisions and client feedback evolved it into what we see.

I'm an art director at an ad agency, and I see how these things happen every day. I'm willing to bet that we are seeing bits and pieces of a few styles and a few ideas here. It happens a lot when successful type A personalities have an important project that they micromanage because it's their baby.

At least they didnt pay 1.4 million and get the London Olympics logo. That would suck.

    ReplyDelete
  52. I wouldn't get too fussed over the Jets logo-it'll be Christmas before they roll out the "retro" jersey, and then a "3rd" jersey for special events, followed by the "new look that really captures the essence of the franchise" jersey before next years draft.

If you don't like the new logo wait a week.

Not much to add about Brule that hasn't been said-if he can get healthy he'll get his chance-don't see a long term future with the Oilers though.

    ReplyDelete
  53. What I'd like to see is a more consistent diagnosis of CRB: concussion related bitterness. And I'd like to see it before Sidney pulls the Eric Lindros rip cord.

And what about DRD: douchebag related depression, after your knee is never the same again.

Or DRAM: douchebag related attempted manslaughter.

It can relate to brain injury. Or it can relate to different people handling anger, frustration, and setback in different ways.

    ReplyDelete

Better than a cartoon gorilla or a puce bobcat.

  57. I'm thinking Brule might have the same sort of problem that Torres had near the end of his stay in Edmonton.
