Oilers sign Peckham

The Edmonton Oilers signed defender Theo Peckham today. It's a one year deal, Ryan Rishaug has the money at $1.075M for the year. It's a huge raise, almost double last year's deal and reflects his increased role on the team.

Among the mid 00's draft picks by the Oilers (counting Taylor Chorney, Danny Syvret, Jeff Petry, Peckham, Alex Plante) Peckham is the first to play a prolonged period of time as an NHL regular.

As I mentioned in my RE item on him, Peckham did some good things in 10-11:
  • Peckham played tougher minutes than one would think for a player of his experience. He did it while playing with Tom Gilbert 48% of the time at evens.. He also had the toughest zone start, so for Peckham to emerge with his CorsiRel at -6.6 and a -5 plus minus (and allowing a major dollop for luck) that's still a solid year. This was his first full NHL season.
Despite a glaring need for top 4D help on the roster, Peckham is likely best suited to the third pairing for at least one more year. I wouldn't bet against Peckham finding a way to be a useful player farther up the depth down the line; betting against him has been a poor bet for some time now.

    I think the Oilers--and this is reading between the lines re: Stauffer--may be sending NK to the minors if they can acquired a solid option.

    Doesn't Nikolai have a NMC? Not like he would report to begin with.

    Yeah, Peckham has done nothing but outperform expectations since the day he was drafted. I think the numbers could match the term a little better (I was hoping for around $850K-$950K for this coming season), but the difference is so minor it's not really an issue.


    I like both the Peckham-Gilbert pairing and the Whitney-Peckham combo (though I think that was only ever used in preseason), but not both. I wouldn't feel comfortable giving either the top pairing role.

    Given the way our defense is shaping up, it doesn't look good for Peckham getting much top 4 time, but I also have a feeling that Peckham may also lose some icetime to Sutton which may squeeze him out altogether.
