Next Stop, Pottersville

The Edmonton Oilers signed AHL defenseman Corey Potter today. He's an unusual defenseman in that he has both size and mobility but has played very few NHL (9) games compared to AHL (321) since turning pro.

With AHL blue, it is usually size or speed that keeps them down on the farm. In Potter's case, it looks like it might be consistency.

He had a $500,000/$105,000 NHL/AHL contract a year ago, no details on his current deal.

I'd guess that Potter will fill a top 4D role in OKC and be in the mix for callup by the Oilers in 11-12.

  1. Don't know the player, but am glad to see ST addressing organizational depth and getting some experienced role players for OKC

  2. Carcillo signs with Chicago per Bob Mackenzie.

  3. Call him the Shawn Belle replacement - size and speed without consistency

  4. Good that they added a RH Dman who has an outside shot at a cup of coffee in the NHL, you can never have enough RH Dmen.

How the hell did 3.1 get Belanger for only 1.75MM/yr.

That ranks up with the Staios trade in terms of "well done" factor.

I still think Petry starts the year in EDM.

Good God! The Oilers have 9 top 9 forwards

    4,10,14
    94,89,83
    91,Belanger,23

    Crazy.

  5. A forward has to be dealt one would think. I'd still like to see another improvement on D, and of course, the bloody net. But a pretty good day overall for The Braintrust. If they can convert a couple of Fs into a top 4 D, this will be a rocking July.

  6. I'll have a post up in about an hour, but I don't see any way for Petry to make this club and I'm a little worried about Cogliano too.

  7. I don't know why everyone is so worries about the net.

Dubnyk was league average for his first full fleged season.

Probably could upgrade to 50 games this year. If Khabibulin can play like his normal years he'd be a decent backup. We'd be pretty average in the departement.

  8. I still think there is room for Petry. He's one of two RH DMen. (Barker shoots left BTW) Of course I want Petry to earn it, but pairing Petry with Sutton would make for a good bottom pairing. Peckham, as it stands right now is the 7th D, I wonder how that will fly. If I was Peckham, I would be eyeballing Smid spot, I don't think there is much that separates them other than experience.

  9. LT, how about Cogs and Gilbert to NYR for Dubinsky as rumored today. Solves the Cog/Petry issue. maybe.

  10. i like the forwards brought in, especially Belanger .. but the Defensemen?

    Sutton, Barker, Potter?

    all gambles on some level.

i guess you take what you can get, and maybe the oilers get lucky with one of them.

  11. Sweet Jesus, I picked the wrong July 1 not to follow the free agent happenings.

My reaction everything is more or less the same as everyone else's. Thrilled on Belanger, maybe a little happier than most about Sutton, and happy to see legitimate fourth-liners like Hordichuk and Eager. Barker's a weird one, but one year. Fine.

If they trade Gilbert, though, it's still a bad day - we'll be left with one top-four defenseman. Even with him, they're still one of the worst four blue lines in the league.

I think Tambellini must have finished evaluating yesterday.

  12. @striatic,

No question the Oil didn't hit a home run on d, but there wasn't much available as UFAs

Sutton and Barker in with Struds, Foster, and Vandermeer out is still an improvement.

Now with the glut of forwards, maybe we can deal some in a package for an upgrade at d? not sure though.

You need 7 D on the roster.

    6
    77
    5
    Barker
    49
    Sutton
    58

I don't think 3.1 is done though, too much smoke around trading for a top 4 D.

  14. Petry definitely has to be ahead of Peckham given the number of portsiders.

The clock is ticking on Cogs (unless they move Gagner for value) and likely Brule too.

  17. We upgraded the hockey players? weird. it's been a long time since it hasn't been just at the draft.

    good luck Foster!

I hope this is the case. It's an upgrade on last year but that's not saying much.

I like what they've done so far(quite frankly I'm a little stunned by the volume of moves,
Tambo must be a little tuckered out after his busiest day on the job:)

Maybe Peckham is the D that's moved. He has a little cache to his name(touched by the hand of
    God himself:Don Cherry)

They appear to have settled on Smid, and Sutton fills the tough guy role,I'm not sure where Barker fits in all of this.

What does Cogs/Gagner and Peckham get you?

  19. Just reading something by Gregor and he reminds everyone that Barker just turned 25. Hasn't there been endless posts on the glacial development of dmen and how they turn the corner right about at this age?

3rd overall pick, maybe finds his game in a new city. Maybe.

  20. I know why Lowetide is late with his next post: he Red Army G men knocked on his door to ask for an explanation. Those guys don't minsk words. Next time he'll wise up and pick Rahat.

    Most defencemen aren`t alcoholics, either.

Who knows though, maybe Barker has his Dan Cleary moment.

I don't know why to be honest. Handzus is redundancy in SJ when they already have Thornton, Couture and Pavelski at C.
