The Los Angeles Kings have been struggling for awhile now and I think the Oilers could help them. Tonight the Kings skilled men should be able to bury a few chances and I also think there's a chance these two teams could do business again on the trade market.
GM Dean Lombardi pursued LW Ilya Kovalchuk heavily last summer and the club dealt for Marco Sturm earlier in the year. Currently (as I read their depth chart) they're employing young Andrei Loktionov in the position that could be occupied by a guy like Dustin Penner.
If the Oilers are shopping him, it might be a good place for the big man to land. I remain hopeful the Oilers will sign both Penner and Hemsky moving forward.

Will Zack Stortini clear waivers? A quick poll of people I know suggests no one expects anyone to put in a claim but I think a team might do it. He's inexpensive, the guy has all kinds of heart and he has played well in a defined role. I think he lost his confidence because the coach didn't see him as a valuable part of a team he belonged to for quite some time.
I haven't spent a lot of time examining some of the end of the roster guys for most of the NHL teams, but am confident in saying Storts is better than a few of them.

I hate the All-Star break. I love watching the Oilers, even during a season when there's a lot of profanity in my living room (I blame the kids, but everyone says it's me doing it). Either way, I'll be watching to see if Hemsky and Eberle draw back in and await the next Taylor Hall exploit.
So any idea on lineup? I heard on team 1260 yesterday that in practice Hall was with cogs on a line. Wonder if that is going to be the line tonight. And did Eberle pass his "Renney" test?

He is better then Jacques, but people should remember the Oil have always been enamored of speed, and while Jacques is not Hall, he is a much better skater then Stortini. I think with his size, they hope Jacques turns into a better version of Stortini, at least I think that must be it because there is no other reason for him to be in the lineup right now.

Small but fast and light on heavy hitters. I like the top 2 lines, but Renney better line match that 3rd line or they will get killed in their own zone. If you slide Lander into Cogs 3rd line spot and move Cogs to 4th line, then suddenly we have a more balanced team. Still lack ideal size, but we are better. Lots of decisions next year.
Very much doubt Eberle will skate tonight. But sure, one could hope. Think he'll be back for our next game.

He has a very good point. Still, for all I know, JFJ could be the next sent packing once Brule is back. Not sad to see either one of them (or Big Mac) leave. But Stortini shouldn't have been the first one to go.

I've noticed a convergence of sorts in the last few months between the Oiloblogosphere and the MSM when it comes to questions about how the team is run.
Whatever the cause of this, its a good thing for us fans as hopefully the management and coaching staff will asked questions that we want the answers too.
Given that LA played OT last night in MIN, the Oilers have a good chance to win tonight if DD starts.
They have been out-chancing decent teams over the last 10 games, and should make it competitive tonight.
The latest info has 14 failing his "Tom-test", maybe he'll pass at the morning skate.

I do hope there might be something the Kings want badly enough from the Oilers to overpay for. With the West as tight as it is, with everyone including the Falmes believing they can make the postseason, I would think this is the point where a savvy GM could make hay. I don't relish losing Hemsky or Penner, but if you are planning on them not being here long term, this is the time to get maximum value.

Part of the problem with the MSM was that they didn't have any source of information other than their eyes and what the team told them. As we've seen, any individual pair of eyes are prone to error and bias, especially confirmation bias, and group think. So, it's no surprise that a hallmark of local MSM coverage of the Oilers was group think and confirmation bias and blind repetition of management's spin. (The rap against Penner was a good example of group think and confirmation bias.)

I still don't expect much, as theyll just "report" -and often misreport- what the brighter folks around here conclude, but that's better than nothing.

Sometimes I get the impression some of you would be happy with another 2007 style ending, and a 10th pick..sheesh.
Low expectations on management are the fan's enemy. The higher the Oilers finish this year, the higher management's going to be expected to finish next year. Another thirtieth place finish just means 2011-2012 expectations that management can't fall short of, and another year before the clock starts ticking on them.

I think the Oilers might be riding Khabby hard in the hopes that the guy calls it quits. Yes the cap hit is still there but they won't have to pay him and if they need the cap space then they can likely move him to a team like the Islanders that is always at the cap floor. (They'd love cap hits without actual dollars attached)
ReplyDeleteI think the Oilers and Kings are perfect dance partners. However, I don't think the Oilers should be targeting players currently on the Kings roster. They have plenty of NHL ready prospects and there are always picks.
San Jose might be a dance partner as well since they're built to win now and they're floundering.
It's really looking like this deadline will be a sellers market which is yay for us!

Oilers M.O. for a few of the last few years has been to mount a futile charge for the playoffs, mostly falling short and then the team perpetually blows no matter what. Followed by really poor teams like the Pens and Caps and Hawks making out like bandits in June.
For what it's worth, I'd love to see real hockey men brought in, and K. Lowe and his stooges guillotined at centre ice in a 'thank you to the fans for suffering the last 20 years' night. If I had my druthers I would have kept Penner over Hemsky, due to injuries etc. I always liked Penner - a good intelligent player.

ReplyDeleteI don't buy the slowly tightening noose thing. A 12'th place finish buys you nothing. The expectation clock starts the moment the team reaches quorum of Actual NHL Players (spiked with upside).

Firing the management you hate is a very very very minor consolation if your team has been Burked at the draft table. Lately the Oil seems relatively Daigle proof, so we might as well continue fishing for aces.

ReplyDeleteCan you show examples of teams that have followed your map? That's a sincere question to which I don't know the answer, but the Chicago model doesn't provide much support for it:
2005-2006: 14th in the west
2006-2007: 13th in the west
2007-2008: 10th in the west
2008-2009: 4th in the west, lost conference finals
2009-2010: 2nd in the west, Stanley Cup champions
They certainly didn't keep finishing 15th until suddenly they were a Cup contender.
To answer my own question, the post-lockout Penguins do indeed appear to have skipped mediocre, shooting from 15th to 5th over a single season.

ReplyDeleteAnyway, my concern is that the Oilers are poorly managed, and I would not be at all surprised to see them piss away the rookies' ELCs without ever qualifying for the playoffs. A tenth place finish this year (which is out of reach, but I'm speaking hypothetically), would force expectations up to a level where that would be a firing offense.
ReplyDeleteObviously I'd prefer it if Lowebellini put together a Cup winner rather than putting together enough sustained mediocrity to be fired; I just think that either is preferable to neither, and that the second is far more likely.

ReplyDeleteInsofar as Taylor Hall doesn't get injured, my theory of how champion hockey teams are formed sees him exponentially improving as early as next season, and literally dragging the franchise ahead with him towards real contention, within 1-3 seasons from now.
Young impressionable players with(talent to start with) given a guy like Hall to lead them, tend to develop quickly. The team has got a lot of talent now, and should get even more this spring.
I've never seen a player as good as Taylor Hall not win the Stanley Cup. He's a gamebreaker, that missing link in those game 7's which define winning teams.
People might argue that Gretzky couldn't win in LA, but that team was gutted when they traded for him. Several 1st picks, and several more future 1st picks gave them zero chance of rounding out their team.
So long as we don't get some idiot like Brian Burke who trades away our talent, the future is inevitably going to see Oilers winning 1 or more cups with Hall.
I'm absolutely certain of it.
Now please excuse me. I need to go and take my meds.

Shut Philly out last night and Philly is loaded up front. They're the team to beat in the East but Tampa is in the mix now. Yzerman has done a really nice job. Lots of low cost bets. If he could only figure out a way to dump #4.

I'm sure others have noted this but both TSN and Sportsnet guys have mentioned Souray as a possibility to move at the deadline. The contract is an obvious issue but it sounds like he is in the mix.

ReplyDeleteIt's my understanding that he can't even be traded without clearing re-entry waivers, which would seem to invalidate this talk from TSN and Sportsnet to which Black Dog refers.
Traktor - I think you're right, there's a window where he does not have to clear but its not until after the playoffs are over.
ReplyDeleteIt would be interesting, the Oilers will get negative value for him, so probably a poor contract back but better to spend the money on someone playing for you than riding the buses.
For a team trading for him there is that gamble that they would lose him, I guess the question is if you can find someone who has the cap space to take him on and the money to pay him. And then you'd need another club to have the same to pick him up on reentry.
I don't see them moving him until the summer but I found it interesting that he was being mentioned. Philips and Kaberle are the other top four guys who may be out there. Kaberle does not seem inclined to waive his no trade so pickings are slim.

But over on Copper & Blue, where smarter people than I am hang out, it seems to be the working belief that Souray being traded would necessitate him clearing entry waivers. It's possible that I misunderstood, and they were just saying that he'd have to clear entry waivers if the team that traded for him actually wanted him to play for them this year, but I don't think so.
I didn't expect Doughty to be such a whiny pussy, but there you go.

ReplyDeleteIt looks to me like on both goals by the Kings there was an un-bothered King standing in front of Khabibulin while the Oiler defense were off having tea or something.
Khabibulin does suck, but the defence played a big part in both of those goals.
Foster is alsmot as bad as Studwick IMO but I'm sure bogas metric says he rocks because he directs pucks at the net. If any metric on the internet says Foster is a quality defensemen the metric should be abolished.
