Despite drawing the same checking assignments he'd had in Montreal--against Bobby Hull, for example--Roberts contributed 14 goals last winter.
-Jim Proudfoot, Pro Hockey (Summer 1968)
--
NHL history is full of coaches heaping praise on a Jimmy Roberts. Why? Because they help win hockey games, they do the dirty work and if they fail at their jobs the coach gets the "bad" television time. They usually make good coaches after they're done playing.
Fernando Pisani was a Jimmy Roberts. Mike Grier had the role before him (with Daniel Cleary borrowing it for a few months in between) and the glory days Oilers had solid 2-way RW options behind Kurri and Anderson.
I think Tom Renney can do himself a huge favor by finding the elusive Jimmy Roberts. In the last Oiler game, the RW's were Hemsky, Omark, Jones and Reddox. The club has a quality rookie winger (Jordan Eberle) who also plays the right side.
I'd bet money Eberle could fill that role. Seriously. He'd lose a lot of offense and ideally someone like Reddox could fill the role, but Eberle has a more complete game than most rookies. Another candidate? Pääjärvi.

I posted this over at ON last night, but wanted to pass it along here too. I'll be hosting a 2-hour show on Team 1260 beginning a week from tomorrow called "Nation Radio." It'll be an interview show with lots of room for emails and calls so please consider calling and adding to the conversation. Same rules as here, with the added request to stay away from profanity.
--
The Oilers are alone in 30th place. Sean Couturier, Adam Larsson, Ryan Nugent-Hopkins and Gabriel Landeskog await. Or do we need to add Huberdeau? Here are their NHLE's:
- Couturier 82gp, 13-26-39
- Landeskog 82gp, 19-16-35
- Huberdeau 82gp, 15-20-35
- Nugent-Hopkins 82gp, 8-27-35
- Larsson 82gp, 2-16-18

Congrats on the radio gig LT. I just spent the morning reading about Tony Hand (I'm 29 for the record)... looking forward to it!
ReplyDeleteIm still on team Larsson.
It'll be intersting to see where a guy like Strome ends up going, statistically he seems to be in the conversation with that group of 4, I wonder what the scouts see (or don't see) in his game that's keeping him from joining that tier?
ReplyDeleteOut of curiousity, what made you decide that now was the time for the radio show LT?
ReplyDeleteI'm looking forward to it LT, good to read that news!
Ha, I wrote "group of 4", already forgetting that you'd added Huberdeau.
ReplyDeleteMake that "group of 5"?
OT: Has anyone seen Shameless with William H. Macy and Emmy Rossum? Is it any good?
speeds: I never thought about doing a radio show on the Team 1260 but it kind of developed over time.
ReplyDeleteI'm not certain where it will go, but plan to enjoy it.
LT: I posted this over at ON, but as I don't know if you're still checking the comments I'll post again here:
ReplyDeleteGreat news LT! Do Team1260 broadcast on their website (and will it be available in the UK? I know that 630CHED is but not sure about the team).
Being a UK hockey fan I know all about Tony Hand (well, a fair amount), even though I'm only 22 - absolute legend and such a shame he didn't want to stay in NA, could have been Britain's first born and bred hockey star. If the show isn't available in the UK, I agree with other posters that I hope you make podcasts available as I can't wait to listen in. You are the voice of reason on the Oilogosphere and, while every blogger has their detractors, the most respected.
As others have said, it would be fantastic if you could get bring together the likes of C&B, Cult of Hockey (Bruce McCurdy particularly is doing fantastic work for both sites), BDHS (although you might have to persuade him to leave out some of his personal-life stories ;)). I would say Coming Down The Pipe too but they already have their own spot, and OilField Hockey would have been good for the Barons updates but they've packed in at least temporarily. For Baron's updates I'd recommend regular airtime for Neal Livingston at C&B, he's great with his updates.
Once again, congrats LT.
Huberdeau 75pts in 49G 61 PIM
ReplyDeleteStrome 81pts in 49G 60 PIM
Both are 6ft 1" Centers.
As speeds said, its tough to know what the difference is, without scouting.
I think that is shooting a little low for 14.
ReplyDeleteAs a rookie is already 1/14 among forwards in RelCor and is 1/14 in RelCor QC
As a rookie!
I think he can play the toughs, but you have to have him pegged as the rarest of all birds, a toughs out scorer, not just holding the toughs in check.
More Hemsky, less Pisani.
Speaking of RelCor QC, check out the Oilers Forwards ranked from hardest to easiest RelCor QC
ReplyDeleteEberle
Paajarvi
Hall
Gagner
Horcoff
Omark
Brule
Cogliano
Jones
Penner
Hemsky
JFJ
Fraser
Zorg
I would say that the above is the result of Renney not line matching, and opposition coaches trying to get their best out against the rookies.
Thanks for sheltering the kids Tom!
Way to bring them around slowly!
Thank god the kids are as good as they are that they are swimming and not sinking too much.
@woodguy...To my eye it was Renney who was matching the rookies against the other teams top players.Maybe not as much lately but he certainly seemed to be doing it before Horcoff was injured.
ReplyDeleteVery excited to hear your dulcet tones on the transistor a bit more often, LT (once every blue moon on Stauffer's show left me wanting).
ReplyDeleteEasyOil raises some interesting points. I could definitely see you running the show like an Oilogosphere Zoo Crew... Black Dog chiming in with the perv laugh and sound effects. Mudcrutch raining his special brand of insult humour on anything that moves. 2 hours of crude jokes, prank calling trolls, and gross out contests.
It can't fail.
BTW, EasyOil, you'll be glad to know that theteam1260.com has a big, shiny button that says "Listen Live."
Terry Jones says "Keep Hemsky, Trade Penner
ReplyDeleteI'd like to keep both.
Hi LT. In your opinion, how does the top of this year's draft class compare to last year's?
ReplyDeleteIf Couturier, Landeskog, Nugent-Hopkins and Larsson were a year older, where would they have sat in the Hall-Seguin conversation?
Thanks DF! That kinda reminds of this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u-irV8b-aJA
ReplyDeleteGlad to know I'll be able to hear Lowetide beginning each radio show with "This is..." and me thinking "Hang on, I can't see who you're talking about LT, this doesn't make sense!"
Tambellini is definitely going to listen to GMs pitching picks for players like Gilbert Brule...
ReplyDeleteWill that be before of after he listens to a black dog telling him to shoot brunettes?
Anyone else see Freddy Meyer pass out in ATL last night?
ReplyDeletehttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LWeBAd5x1yg
First Pavelec, now this. Someone oughta check Philips Arena for a carbon monoxide leak...
So what you're saying is if we call don't use the Dennis spelling of Montreal?
ReplyDeleteCongrats on the gig, LT--if I listened to radio and Edmonton radio I'd tune in.
I agree with Woodguy on Eberle, might be shooting a little low, and would he embrace the role?
ReplyDeleteBruce Dowbiggin wrote a book entitled "Money Players - How Hockey's Greatest Starts Beat the NHL at it's Own Game".
I found an article using excerpts from the book. It described Player agent Mike Gillis (sued Alan Eagleson in 1990s) and the approach to Lou Lamoriello when Bobby Holik was approaching free agency in ealy 2000s.
A few quotes I thought relevant:
"While Stevens, Patrik Elias, Petr Sykora, and Martin Brodeur received much of the credit for the Devils' two Stanley Cup wins in 1995 and 2000, it was Holik's fierce dominance at centre ice that gave his more celebrated teammates the room to manoeuvre."
"But subordinating his offence to do the dirty work did not translate into dollars for Holik"
"Adding to Holik's determination was his salary arbitration in the summer of 2001. After hearing for years that his sacrifices for the team would be rewarded, Holik was crestfallen when, during arbitration, the Devils pointed to his modest scoring statistics as a reason to lower his salary request. "
Points are important part, if not the driving force of forwards in salary negotiations. How would this play out with Eberle? Different time, era etc but asking an offensive minded player to sacrifice some of that may be good for the team but not the player/agent. No doubt Eberle could fill the role however.
I've always thought of Colin McDonald as a potential next Pisani.
ReplyDeleteAbsolutely delighted you got the gig! Looking forward to listening. Hope you kept rights to the name/trademarks yourself, personally. So that if you ever move they are yours.
ReplyDeleteThink it will be a great addition to local radio and I could see it morph into something much more than a once a week deal.
Wait a minute, you are on 1260 talking about the Oilers. Does this mean you will be signed by the administratively bloated Oilers as Director of Internet services and be obliged to SELL, SELL, SELL the new arena and repeated worry that we are getting "our show run"
Seriously eagerly await your new role!! Now about the new arena.......
Congrats LT
ReplyDeletespeeds - Shameless is pretty good but it doesn't hold a candle to the original British version. Catch that if you can.
Emmy Rossum is smoking hot though.
LT,
ReplyDeletePlease pass my congratulations on to Mr. Mitchell. Well done sir!
I have Strome, Hamilton and Murphy ahead of Huberdeau.
ReplyDeleteI think the thing about Strome is pedigree... he was not expect to take this big jump in points, whereas everyone knew Huberdeau from his quality rookie season.
Jones evidently feels the rebuild started last year and that we are not getting our asses run by bigger teams.
ReplyDeleteAnd somehow we are going to start winning next year after adding 3 more rookies to the squad and losing Penner and somehow this will get the free agents to come.
Congrats, LT, should be a refreshing change to Saturday's typical radio.
ReplyDeleteThere hasn't been much worth listening to on the radio most Saturdays around here between "Wide Cut Country" (10-12) and "Natch'l Blues" (3-5) on CKUA.
And I have a nagging feeling that passing on RNH (as I expect they will) will turn out to be a mistake.
Congratualtions!
ReplyDeleteNo profanity huh? I guess that will likely mean no stories from Pat on the first show then... sigh - that would have made for some amaizing sports talk radio.
Despite losing some of the "colour" of the conversations here, very much looking forwards to hearing the show LT. I guess this means that the infiltration of the MSM by the cheezee-eaters is on full swing.
Can your first radio show be a rant against how dishonest this paragraph from that Jones article Woodguy linked?
ReplyDeleteNext year Hemsky will make $5 million and Penner $4.25 million. That’s more money off the salary cap should they depart. If the Oilers have a new state-of-the-art downtown arena and entertainment district approved soon and start to shoot up the standings next season and become a more attractive place for free agents to play, you’d have the money to replace them.
So if people cough up the money for a new arena, the Oilers win the cup every year. And if not, well... that's why free agents don't come here and why the team has sucked for so long.
That's some really wonderful, single malt BS there.
Oh yeah, and Hemsky counts 5 million against the cap next year because... uh... whatever.
ReplyDeleteThat was my first -and last- MSM article for a long time.
ReplyDeleteThe Oil should actually push hard for a second first rounder this year (perhaps when they almost inevitably move Penner or Hemsky). There is a good chance they will be able to select Larsson.. and I think they should. Then with that 2nd pick, maybe they can grab a big center with skill.
ReplyDeleteRyan Strome seems to have size (although from HockeyDB's stats, it looks like he's gone through a growth spurt in the last year-ish) and his numbers *this year* are good. I'm not sure we'd be able to procure another 1st rounder to pick that high though. Victor Rask has size and is ranked 14th. I'm not good with the Euros though... his however this is what EliteProspects report on him says:
"A forward with excellent puck handling. A very good finisher who protects the puck well. Has a lot of strength. Moves well. A very creative player with good work ethic"
I am all for getting a top centerman, but I think the focus should be on a complete d-man a la Larsson first. Unless he's gone by our pick (which I'm thinking will be first again anyways) or the other top prospects are that much better players.
So my thoughts are, pick Larsson, and shoot for a second pick that should be in the top 14 and scoop up Rask. Would the amount of Swedes in our system at this point be following the Detroit rebuild a little too closely? :P
Speeds and Blackdog
ReplyDeleteShameless is OK. BD is right in stating the 1) the british version is better and 2)Emmy Rossum is easy on the eyes (and nude quite frequently!)
I find it hard to have sympathy for any of the characters.
I'm on the Keep Penner/trade Hemsky/Draft Larsson train.
I'm also on the keep Penner, trade Hemsky (if either of them) and draft Larsson train ;)
ReplyDeleteGood luck LT - can't wait. You do realise that 12-2 in Edmonton is 7-9 in the UK - two hours of prime pub time.
ReplyDeleteHand stories are always welcome - remember him scoring 7 (with a couple of helpers) in a 13-13 goalie shelling at Hillheads. Probably the same game as his brother Paul and Dave Ross fed each other knuckles for at least 5 minutes in one of the best bouts of all time. Ah the 80s, I miss the.....
spOILer:
ReplyDeleteI'm not sure what you mean by "pedigree"?
Strome was selected 8th overall in the 2009 OHL priority draft, so it's not like he completely "came out of nowhere".
Tencers lineup at the moment....
ReplyDeleteHall - Cogliano- Eberle
Paajarvi - Gagner - Omark
Jones - Horcoff - Hemsky
MacIntyre - Fraser - Reddox
Peckham - Gilbert
Smid- Petry
Vandermeer - Foster
Dubnyk
Eberle's back, baby! I'm not too sure about that line though. Doesn't make too much sense to me. Jones with Horcoff and Hemsky looks suspect as well.
Everybody grab a shovel!
Penner expected out with the flu. Brule out with lime disease...or something.
He sure didn't have a great 1st year in the OHL though, no question about that.
ReplyDeleteThis comment has been removed by the author.
ReplyDeleteI agree with the sentiment that you're shooting low on Eberle. I'd rather see if he can be Canada's answer to Pavel Datsyuk and settle for Jimmie Roberts 2.0
ReplyDeleteCogliano seems to be the guy Renney is trying to mold into a Roberts type player.
As for the draft talk. Unless I'm trolling I don't really care who goes where but if I had input I would rather stick with one of the guys that has been in the conversation for top pick the last couple years rather then a guy that joined the conversation this season.
So for me it's guys like SC, RNH, and AL.
Rick DiPietro will be out 4-6 weeks with facial fractures and knee swelling
ReplyDeleteI continue to wonder what the Isles would give up to be rid of this guy...
Penner gets married and gets the flu? Boy that's going to play well in the locker room.
ReplyDeleteWould hate to see either Penner or Hemsky go but am wondering if either of them is forcing ST's hand? They can say all they want in public but I'm not convinced that Toonces is proactive enough to re-shape the roster effectively but rather is just reacting to calls asking for them.
Be nice to play DD instead of the Sieve in goal tonight. At least have a chance for competitive game.
Congrats on your radio gig LT!
ReplyDeleteQuestion - you've mentioned before that having Gagner on the Oilers affects your choice of picking RNH in the upcoming draft.
What if the Oilers didn't have Gagner? How would that affect your order of the top five draftees?
Oh, and I'm still hoping that Reddox develops into the Pisani role. If only he were bigger....
ReplyDeleteIn Swedes we trust (Larsson or Landeskog)
ReplyDeleteBob MacKenzie was on the TEAM morning show today, he seemed to indicate that Couturier was sliding a bit due to his play since coming back from the WJHC.
ReplyDeleteI haven't seen the games or anything, but since coming back from the WJHC Couturier's stat line is:
10GP 8G 11A for 19 pts, +13
Doesn't seem too bad from the outside looking in?
Terry Jones critical of someone for being fat and lazy? :-)
ReplyDeleteI'd like to keep Penner too. He is huge and can play all over the ice. He makes everyone around him better and is good for 50 + pts every year.
But the dude scares me. From afar, he doesn't seem to exude any kind of leadership, has a weird personality (is he shy?), hardly ever seems to smile, and does seem to take a lot of shifts off.
Again, I don't know him at all, just my thoughts from watching the guy on TV.
But is that someone you want to be one of the elder statesman on your team?
Brule out with lime disease...or something.
ReplyDeleteGreat quip.
And those line make no sense, unless you are a coach with a mandate to retain the last overall position. I get the fact that Penner is out throws things into confusion, but Jones with Horc and Hemsky? Cogliano with Hall and Eberle? At least use the strongest of the top three lines to mix and match together, rather than trying to preserve the POG line at the expense of everyone else.
Something like:
Horc-Cogs-Hemsky
Hall-PRV-Eberle
Gagner-Omark-Jones
The dregs
And kris is absolutely right that there is some fast and loose playing with information in Jones' article. I could write something as poor as that speculating on trade deadline(I did in fact; shameless plug).
The line about JFJ having trade value especially made me laugh in derision.
I think Brule caught Pou-bitis.
ReplyDeleteThere's no reason that another NHL GM would give up value for JFJ. But there's no reason our NHL GM would effectively do the same, by waiving better players to preserve his roster spot.
ReplyDeleteI guess what I'm saying is that we have to factor into our analysis that GMs can be morons (see Staios trade), and probably shouldn't dismiss out of hand the idea that somebody with no business in the NHL could get us a low pick at the deadline.
Is that supposed to read we have to factor into our analysis that our GM is a moron?
ReplyDeleteBut I agree with the sentiment the trade deadline creates some head scratcher deals.
"Tencers lineup at the moment"
ReplyDelete1C cogs
2C gagner
3C horcoff
Sounds about right
Traktor, in all my life, I have never met somebody who more successfully blurred the line between earnestness and self-parody.
ReplyDeleteI think I might actually intend that as a compliment.
I think Penner has the "The Coach realized I partied too much for my wedding and played like crap in the last game" flu.
ReplyDeleteSeriously I've never seen a player that can look so completely unengaged on the ice one game and so fiercely involved in other moments. And it's so obvious that I've come to watch him in order to determine if we'll win/play a respectable game or lose/look horrid.
Speeds,
ReplyDeleteYeah I was referring to his prior year, and him entering this year way down the charts.
@ LT - I just read your post now over at ON and didn't realise your Red Deer connection. I partied quite a few nights at Billy Bobs in the 80's but late 80's. When were you DJ'ing there?
ReplyDeleteI guess what I'm saying is that we have to factor into our analysis that GMs can be morons (see Staios trade), and probably shouldn't dismiss out of hand the idea that somebody with no business in the NHL could get us a low pick at the deadline.
ReplyDeleteI think we use the M word a little too freely around here.
Fact is the GM's have a ton of info we don't have. They know the player's personality, how they get along with others, whether they train hard, drink too much, their medical condition etc, etc. They have the conversations with the agents and have a sense of whether someone wants to be here or will be claimed off waivers.
JFJ is a head scratcher. But maybe they have a medical opinion telling them JFJ will be at 50% this season and 100% next? Maybe they are only keeping guys they see being here in 2 years?
Its a leap but the reality is that a lot of factors other than Corsi and boxcars should be taken into account when assessing a player. We only have half of the information.
Its a leap but the reality is that a lot of factors other than Corsi and boxcars should be taken into account when assessing a player. We only have half of the information.
ReplyDeleteIt is hard to give credence to that, when by eye, by boxcar and by math JFJ has not been a player. It is much easier to assume that a GM is a human being with strengths, weaknesses and blindness like all the rest of us. And that GMs are not a cut above the informed public when evaluating players.
I personally feel that there is a blind optimism from management about JFJ and his potential that keeps him around. And when he has a stretch of "good" (for him) games it extends the hopefulness. At the same time there are signs that maybe management is having the same trouble justifying his place in face of mounting on-ice evidence.
But I take the cautionary note of not calling GMs names to heart. I am ashamed. ;-)
I think I've realized my issues with Gagner are more of the fact that Toonces is going to overpay him in regards to what he can actually bring to the team.
ReplyDeleteI cringe in a few years when these morons have to figure out contracts for all these lottery picks.
Fact is the GM's have a ton of info we don't have. They know the player's personality, how they get along with others, whether they train hard, drink too much, their medical condition etc, etc. They have the conversations with the agents and have a sense of whether someone wants to be here or will be claimed off waivers.
ReplyDeleteDefinitely true. For that reason, I am not making any pronouncements about what the Oilers should do, for example, with Hemsky and Penner. If they keep one and trade the other, I'm not going to say that they got it backwards, because I don't know the contract demands, chances of re-signing here, and potential returns on the trade market for each. As long as they don't sign either to unreasonable contracts or trade either for a return that was obviously below market value (while appreciating that they're going to have a better feel for the market than we do), I'm not going to criticize.
For the same reason, I didn't criticize their decision to cut ties with Roloson, though from my angle it looked like keeping him around would have been a good move (I even initially defended the re-signing of Strudwick for reasons unrelated to statistics, though I've since soured on it). But while the decision not to bring back Roloson deserves some deference (I heard some rumblings that he was somehow bad with the younger goalies, and if true that is very much a legitimate thing for management to take into account), the decision to sign Khabibulin (for example) does not. Likewise, the decision to spend a roster spot on a prospect who has been given every opportunity to succeed and has instead repeatedly failed is not something that could easily be defended using non-public factors.
You are correct that it is possible (that is, that the possibility is greater than 0%, however slightly) that they have a medical opinion that he'll suddenly become a hockey player again next year. But that strikes me as rather a reach. And even if it's true, why wouldn't they at least allude to it publicly? You'd think that not doing so would be unfair to Jacques, who is getting pilloried for being a terrible hockey player. For that matter, why wouldn't they find another team for him to play on for this year (not necessarily the Barons, what with the veteran cap rule), so he wasn't constantly getting killed, and then bring him back next year when he's at 100%?
We need to realize when intangible factors can justify moves that, at first blush, look silly, and when they can't. Jacques falls into the latter category.
And, to the specific example I gave earlier, giving up actual value in the form of a draft pick for the Steve Staios contract was moronic, full stop.
ReplyDeleteRenney pregame
ReplyDelete-sounds like Penner(flu) is game time
-Eberle in
-SMac in

I'm on the keep Hemsky, trade Penner draft Larsson team.
ReplyDeletePenner's a solid player, but Hall's going to take all his 1st line/1st PP LW icetime eventually.
Not many teams have a player as skilled as Hemsky, even with his injury issues.
But while the decision not to bring back Roloson deserves some deference (I heard some rumblings that he was somehow bad with the younger goalies, and if true that is very much a legitimate thing for management to take into account)
ReplyDeleteAt one of those season ticket holder brunches in the offseason, I asked Tambo about the signing and he explicitly said "we needed to sign a goalie who was willing to share the ice time and work with our young goalies".
Don't know if Roloson being a bad teammate was true or not, but it's more than rumblings, it's the company line.
Glad to see people noticing Strome. Putting things into context vis a vis Huberdeau, Strome has little support on his team and at this point is two points out of leading the OHL in scoring, twelve points in his last four games.
ReplyDeleteThe team played three games in three nights on a tough road trip.
I think he's come into his milk, (old Oilpatch adage).
If 27 is able to go then I'm gonna put some money on the Oil in reg - they've done well in Stl as of late - and if 33 gets caught on the ice versus a good line then I will not be please;)
ReplyDeleteThat "good man" MacIntyre seems to be drawing in so I'll guess 85 gets the short straw if 27 can go.
Spector tweets that the Rangers have been scouting Souray hard lately, with even Sather going personally to Hershey.
ReplyDeleteI guess it's possible he makes it through re-entry, but if the Rangers don't grab him that way it means we're getting a big contract back in the trade.
Sather likes his big shiny things.
ReplyDeleteHow much space do they have for next year?
How much space do they have for next year?
ReplyDeleteNot much but Redden is owed $6.5 a year for 4 years including this one.
Maybe Tambo trades Souray for Redden, a prospect, and a first rounder? Redden could then replace Strudwick as the 6/7th D man?
It would cause things to get tight on the cap for the last year of the Redden contract, but they could likely make it work if the get enough in return.
Braintrust wanting another crack at McIlrath maybe.
ReplyDeleteBut wouldn't Redden have to go through re-entry waivers too?
Not much but Redden is owed $6.5 a year for 4 years including this one.
ReplyDeleteYeah, but being in the minors and not being Khabibulin-old, doesn't his salary not count towards their cap (same as Souray's)? That is, wouldn't they not be freeing up any cap space by moving him?
Redden isn't on the Rag's cap, he's in the minors.
ReplyDeleteI put the chance that Redden comes this way at next to 0, unless its a situation where both teams agree to take the other guy on re-entry.
Is Redden at $3.25 a solution for a missing top 4 guy? I hate the idea, but Tambellini might not.
I doubt Slats wants an extra 3.25 on his cap for 3 more years. MSG has more money than anyone, I bet Redden stays buried.
Spector's article here.
Is Redden at $3.25 a solution for a missing top 4 guy?
ReplyDeleteMy understanding is that he's in the minors on merit, not just because of his salary; he was getting healthy scratched even before he was sent down, and that didn't help their cap situation any. So I'm thinking that the answer to your question is "no".
couldn't the rags trade for him, keep him in the minors until the season is over and then have him available for the playoffs?
ReplyDeletecouldn't the rags trade for him, keep him in the minors until the season is over and then have him available for the playoffs?
ReplyDeleteNope - the trade itself would require him to clear re-entry waivers.
From The Sun:
ReplyDeleteRenney isn’t expecting Eberle to be in mid-season form right out of the gate, just to play smart, sound hockey.
“We’ll keep the expectations reasonable,” said the coach.
That made me howl.
SNW using Soundgarden's "Black Rain" for their opener?

ReplyDeleteVandermeer should bring a nice pick at the deadline.
ReplyDeleteI'm starting to enjoy him :(

ReplyDeleteNice one timer, Sam.
ReplyDeletemaybe Sam was aiming ten feet wide?
ReplyDelete14 finds open ice where most fear to tread.
ReplyDeleteUnreal he is a rookie.
It really is, Woodguy. I never thought he'd be able to do the things he does routinely. Just subtle stuff, quick decisions and changing angles.
ReplyDeleteBig brain.
Why the hell is Smid going to the player already covered?? Nice awareness dummy
ReplyDeleteOmark with some jazz there that Gretzky would have loved.
ReplyDeleteBeauty play O'mark. How can they send him down?
ReplyDeleteOmark is more talented than Nilsson plus he has big balls and a motor that never stops.
ReplyDeleteThis team never gets a break.
ReplyDeleteMartindale with a nice night already, 2 goals and an assist.
ReplyDeleteEh Pietrangelo is pretty good.
ReplyDeleteCongrats on the radio gig LT. Will be tuning in.
ReplyDeleteGood things happen to good people.
Your blog mitigates the adverse consequences resulting from the rebuild.
Its like 14 skates as hard as he can with the puck until his defender is gliding backwards.
ReplyDeleteThen 14 cuts on a 30 degree line slightly away from the net.
By the time his defender:
1) recognizes that 14 changed his line
2) stops him self and take a stride towards 14
14 has already glided in front of half of the net in a great scoring space.
Big brain indeed.
5 was a real goddman dummy on that first goal and DD kinda lost his place in goal as well.
ReplyDeleteThat happened a couple of times in that period and I don't have much faith in him for the rest of the night. Add the inevitable blues PPG and this one's over already. Oilers had their chances early on to get out to a 2-0 lead but that seems to have passed now.
83 started off absolutely dealing but then it was 23's period all the way. He had two great SCs plus great feeds for 89's goal 10's shovel late in the frame.
http://comoblueswebsite.yolasite.com/
ReplyDeleteThe Blues transition is a problem for most of our D, yeah? Other than that, the Oil look okay.
ReplyDeleteMaybe it's time to Blow-up the team and re-build for a few seasons.
ReplyDeleteDennis:
ReplyDeleteLooks like you were right about DD tonight. Shakey.
Terrible second period by the Oilers.
Taylor Hall is going to score a lot of goals if he has luck too.
ReplyDeleteThat Hall kid is ok.
ReplyDeleteThank goodness for Eberle and Hall.
ReplyDeleteThey make the disaster that is the Oilers watchable.
It's nice to pick up an assist for getting pushed off the puck.
ReplyDeleteofficiating in this league is terrible.
ReplyDeleteNice battle back by the boys
ReplyDeletePeckman.
ReplyDeleteI like these Oilers.
ReplyDeleteFun to watch.
Peckman's hand eye is what you fear.
"These Oilers do no include":

Afterburner is really learning how to use his speed and body on the rush.
ReplyDeleteAnyone else wondering about Renney attempting to kill a 4 min PP by using just four forwards.
ReplyDeleteThat's good fucking work, I'd say.
Other stuff:
- not expecting to get any kind of big save from DD tonight; he could have made the save on the 4th goal as well.
- two games in a row where someone's allowed to stand in front of the goalie on the PK.
- terrible game by 58; all kinds of little mistakes.
- nice work by 2 to take two minors on the same play.

ReplyDeleteMan, seeing JD interviewing with Gene reminds me of how much I "miss" the days of him being on the HNIC Hotstove and how he'd bring each and every goddamn situation back to a conversation he had with Gretzky when he was a Ranger.
ReplyDeleteand by "miss" I mean not in the goddamn least little bit.
I've been watching the game in the background, why is Penner not playing?
ReplyDeleteSo will they pump and dump Cogliano or is Renney turning him into a hockey player?
ReplyDeletedorito: flu.
ReplyDeleteThere's a kid in the house now, he'll get every damn thing going around school. :-)
ReplyDeleteJones is actually a better LW than 4 for 83.
ReplyDeleteGive 83 the puck and go to the net is the best recipe for playing with 83.
The post-Break Petry looks like a different player. That's NOT a good thing.
ReplyDeleteTough scramble but 5's wandering allows Winchester time.
ReplyDeleteOmark's also a cocky bastage. Doesn't get phased when things go bad, and will get right back out there and try it again.
ReplyDeleteJust started watching 10 minutes ago, said I missed the 1st two periods.
Also Ty Conklin...man oh man oh man. And Brad Winchester...lordie. Also could they have given him any more time and space to poke that in?
The thing about Petry is that he's still a new pro. Prospects don't develop in a straight line and the coaches are relying on him too much.
ReplyDeleteBegat begat begat.
Agree with WG . Hemsky only needs a stick in front of the net to bounce his pass off
ReplyDeleteEberle has a wee bit of rust on his hands
Pump and Dump! Pump and Dump!
ReplyDeleteNice to see 4 living without fear.
ReplyDeleteAbout the only thing Smid has been worth tonight is sticking up for Hall. Everything else about his game tonight has been brutal.
ReplyDeleteSt. Louis commentators just called Conklin a good handler of the puck...
ReplyDeleteCogliano with the Glenn Anderson rotating stick LOL.
ReplyDeleteAccording to Kevin Quinn, Hemsky Hall and Horcoff have been creating all night.
ReplyDeleteQuestion: how many shifts have they played together?
If you aren't going to play MacIntyre, why does he deserve a roster spot? He deters nothing. If they send down O'mark or Reddox over Mac or JFJ the they should fire Tambellini.
ReplyDeleteHas Mac even had a shift?
I believe he spent a few seconds being in his own zone in the first period.
ReplyDeleteAt least it's not a 1 goal game.
ReplyDelete26 is as useless as tits on men.
ReplyDeleteWoodguy:
ReplyDeleteI'd personally love to have my own set of tits. Granted I wouldn't leave my house ever again, but it'd be some kinda fun.
Not a smart play by Hall sticking his leg out like that.
ReplyDeleteI'd say our big guys are pretty useless too. Other than Peckham and Smid, no one like to hit anyone.
Eberle pulling an 83, down 2 with seconds left and opts to pass. Sigh.
ReplyDeleteHall did deserve a little punch in the face for that
ReplyDeleteOutstanding game. Oilers look like they're learning a system, for next season.
ReplyDeleteIs it just me or does it seem like the Oilers opponents consistently start their backup against us? Is that part of the reason why we can always get back in each and every game?
ReplyDeleteConklin isn't having a great year but he made some outstanding saves tonight.
ReplyDeleteDD made two or three maybe.
maybe.
Plus we lose the ST battle.

ReplyDelete14 comes back and assists on 2 of 3 goals.
ReplyDelete14 and 83 would make pretty sweet RW on this team for a long time with 23 playing the softs.
The Conklin curse.
ReplyDeleteWG: Yes.
ReplyDeleteBut as long as the coach matches.
Omark has that leverage smarts going for him in the same way that Weight did. I really like the guy and think he will be a soft minutes murderer, hopefully good enough of a PP producer to justify his contract.
ReplyDeleteAfter watching him this season, I really think 89 should be packaged for a bluechip Dman or a bigger pivot that's going to be here 5 seasons+
Cogliano: 2 assists, +2, 69.2% FO
ReplyDeleteDD: .808sv%
Horcoff: 11 games without a goal
now that the games over.....what if we traded our top pick overall if thats what we get for a signed, sealed and delivered zack parise. maybe i'm still hung up on him because he should be on the roster already but nj is in a heap of trouble and cant afford him and almost have to deal him to rebuild. just a thought
ReplyDeleteI was hoping that after Traktor embarrassed himself with the character revealing comments about LT that he wouldn't troll here anymore... Yet there he is... Unabashed trolling as strong as ever.
ReplyDeleteCogliano vs Horcoff, contracts aside, comparing stats of one game to a slump?
How's about .36PPG vs .6PPG, how's about +2 On a -50 team playing toughs vs -9 on a -50 team playing softs?
Your schtick wore thin years ago Traktor.
I was hoping that after Traktor embarrassed himself with the character revealing comments about LT that he wouldn't troll here anymore...
ReplyDeleteIf not then, at least one of those times that he announced he was leaving, generally in a blaze of profanity.
