Ales Hemsky is out for a month. In terms of entertainment value, this would have meant death for the Edmonton Oilers a year ago.
This season, there are plotlines and speedburners and the Calder race. The three wise kids, the travelling thunder that is Theo Peckham, the step forward by Sam Gagner.
There's some nice things. I'm still very sad Hemsky is injured, though.
--
I wonder what to do about 83 moving forward. He was injured quite a bit before his 27th birthday and now he's injured again. Ales Hemsky played 22 games last season. 22! He's going to miss 20 or so again this season, and that's if he stays healthy all year long (after returning).
Ales Hemsky has been my favorite Oiler for most of the decade. He's a sublime talent and the Oilers have had him tied to a reasonable contract the whole way. Rumor has it that Hemsky would accept another very reasonable deal, but one imagines that the organization would need to sign him long term. I wonder how many years is reasonable based on his injury history?
--
Over at ON, poster Sandra Blood says the following:
- Garfield is claiming the Oilers have put a claim on Todd White off of waivers, Still 14hours away. Hmm thats why no one has been called up.
Hey LT, it's Ducks at Oilers tonight.
ReplyDeleteI picked the wrong week to stop sniffing glue. :-) Thanks Dave.
ReplyDeleteThe thing I like about the team of late is that they don't quit. Sucks about Ales though... so does this Omark guy get a shot?
ReplyDeleteI posted something about Hemmer and his injuries in either the Leaf or the Blues GDT. At this point, the Oiler's have to think long term and everything is going to revolve around long term contracts around Hall, Eberle and MPS. Those are the 3 cornerstone's of this franchise going forward and I don't know if they can afford both Penner and Hemsky. Penner hasn't had as long a NHL career as Hemsky and at times he can seem disinterested out there but the guy is healthy and I think you can count on him to play 75+ games a year. If Ales is going to want a long term deal at full market value, I think they have to look at dealing him.
ReplyDeletepboy: agreed on hemsky. I think he could end up healthy and rip it up, however if we got him on a deal for what he makes now I think you'd have to consider it, injuries and all.
ReplyDeleteAs for White, if it's true he may come to the Oil, it's not a bad pickup. he can play anywhere in the top 3C spots and if he replaces Fraser as our 4C, then we just got better at faceoffs, and veteran presence. Anyone know if he kills penalties?
So if we picked up White, then someone gets squeezed out at center due to the roster size. Fraser seems like the obvious choice to waive to make room. Less obvious is that maybe Tambellini pulled off a deal to trade Cogliano. But not for a center if they picked up White. More likely a prospect or a legit D. So many possibilities to keep me entertained......
ReplyDeleteShocking that the Oilers would finally take advantage of the Waiver Wire considering what's passed through it over up till now.
ReplyDeleteOn a side note, Atlanta seems to have put together a decent, pretty balanced team. No hell's bells but certainly solid. 3 lines that can keep above water and score some, a good 4th that does what 4th lines do, solid defence with mixed vets, young'n's, grit, skill, good young goalie, and some damn fine prospects.
Burmistrov in his sheltered 3rd line role with Antropov at center and Eager to keep things honest can make some hay. He could very well end up winning the Calder. 28GP 4G 8A 12P, 8 Penalties Taken to 18 Drawn, +5, all points even strength and a modest 8.7% accuracy on 46 shots.
Kid looks like he's gonna be a helluva player.
One man's trash is another man's treasure. Todd White would be a nice pick-up for a team that could use some faceoff help. Besides, he's a free agent at the end of the year so it really doesn't cost anything in terms of future decisions. He might not be a great player, but he's certainly an upgrade on Fraser.
ReplyDeleteTo answer the previous question, he can play on the PK... but doesn't do it all that often and isn't the best at it when he does it. ;)
ReplyDeleteTo answer the previous question, he can play on the PK... but doesn't do it all that often and isn't the best at it when he does it. ;)
Sounds like he'll fit right in on the Oilers PK then.
Shocking that the Oilers would finally take advantage of the Waiver Wire considering what's passed through it over up till now.
ReplyDeleteThere was an interview with Tambi about a month before the season started (I forget when exactly) and he made some comments that I determined to mean the following (through the fog and mirrors of the pro sport interview).
The team has a lot of youth and things could go two ways - they could struggle and we could be in a real development year and as a result be in line for another lottery pick. As a result we are loading up on marginal pluggers. However we also see the possibility of these guys coming together and playing really well - maybe even striving for a playoff spot. If that happens we will need to make some changes to help the team be competitive.
Now, of course all of that is my own paraphrase of what he said with as little of 'in between the lines' reading involved. However, I am betting the switch has flipped with Hall lighting it up, Khabi playing like an MVP (followed closely by DD), and the team generally doing well. We may see some minor moves to improve this team over the next month or so - this waiver claim is one of those.

ReplyDeleteAre fans of Theon called Peckerheads?
ReplyDeletebookie,
ReplyDeleteI would continue to be disappointed with Toonces management style if he decided 20 games into the season to change the plan and go for a playoff spot. It is too late for that (look at their record right now).
This was a possibility back in October, but after last month, it ain't gonna happen (JW said as much over at ON, and used actual facts to make his case, as opposed to my use of the word "ain't" to emphasise my viewpoint).
I missed the re-naming of Theo to Theon. Explanation?
ReplyDeleteThe Hemsky/Penner trade thing has been buggin me since TC. I guess ideally one would try to keep both, but is there a rational way to decide which is a better trade option?
ReplyDeleteScoring depth chart:
LW depth: RW depth:
Hall Hemsky
Penner Eberle
Paajarvi Brule
Jones Jones
Omark I'm pretty sure can play either wing, and LW also has the likes of Curtis Hamilton bubbling under.
So it looks like there's far more depth on LW, and any trade of Hemsky that does not bring back a RWer is going ot leave a big hole on the roster.
However a closer look at that depth chart exposes another issue... Hemsky's skills are duplicated on the roster (not to that level but there are other skilled danglers and creative passers), but Penner's are not.
There is no massive wall/crease presence with decent skill after Penner.
And then there is the injury history too.
Hemmer has been my favorite Oiler over the past decade too, but unless he's willing to sign a value deal that takes into account his injury risk, I don't see how we could not be talking to Nashville about a Hemsky for Weber swap come springtime.
Bar Qu
ReplyDeleteI'm not sure what JW said, but they are all of 6 points out of a playoff spot right now. Not exactly insurmountable.
Part of it too might be getting the kids to believe management is behind them on their playoff push. "Oh, you didn't make it? That's okay... Anyone seen Stu?"
Forgot about the crap formatting on blogger, sorry about the lack of 2 columns above guys.
ReplyDeleteI think the Penner vs Hemsky thing may end up being decided for us. In the off season Penner goes back to california to hang out with Getzlaf, Perry and Lupul. I expect him to sign there when he's a UFA because it is where his buddies are and there is less pressure. Not to mention he won a cup there. I expect him to sign in California and for hopefully hemsky to sign here.
ReplyDeleteAnd on another note. No pitlik for US junior team.
ReplyDeletePer Bob Mac on twitter, White cleared waivers.
ReplyDeleteI just asked Dan Tencer via Twitter about the Todd White waiver claim rumor.
ReplyDeleteMe: "Dan any truth to the Oilers rumor about claiming Todd White off waivers?"
Dan: "Nope"
Would you rather the Oilers do well this year ie. come close to making the playoffs. Or, get a high draft pick?
ReplyDeleteWould you rather the Oilers do well this year ie. come close to making the playoffs. Or, get a high draft pick?
ReplyDeleteThat is a fascinating question. Thank you for introducing it to the Oilogosphere, which I'm sure will commence discussing it in great detail.
Next up: does this team need a right-handed tough minutes centre who can win faceoffs?
Steve, that's a good question, and I'm happy for you and all, but the all time great question that needs to be asked here on the Oil blags is clear:
ReplyDeleteWhen will the Oilers get rid of Shawn Horcoff who is clearly holding Eberle and Hall back, and at a 7 million dollar cap hit is evil.
Things I want discussed:
ReplyDeleteIs Gilbert Gilbert too soft?
Why hasn't Petry appeared on the prospects list? What is LT waiting for, Christmas?
I can't believe Garfield misled us...shocking.
ReplyDeleteShocking that the Oilers would finally take advantage of the Waiver Wire considering what's passed through it over up till now.
Who have they missed? I was disappointed they didn't take a flyer on Matt Pelech - but then again no other team did either.
Anyone else that would have made an impact?
spOiler,
ReplyDeleteBy win rate the SJS, STL, and NAS all have 4 more points than games played.
These teans would be 7,8,9 in the conference.
Then you have 2 more teams with 3 more points than games; CHI,COL
Those teams would be 10th and 11th in the conference.
The Oilers have 2 less points than games played, so they are 5 games behind 11th and 6 games behind 7th.
3 of their last 4 wins come against teams that probably won't make the playoffs (TOR,OTT,STL), once they start playing the top 12 West teams on a regular basis, the current win rate will not be sustained.
Playoffs are a real longshot for the Oilers.
Oh don't worry WG, I'm still on the lottery pick bandwagon.
ReplyDeleteI need to see a string of games against at least middling opponents where we out-Corsi or out-scoring-chance the opposition before I personally believe anything other than lottery should be the goal.
But I can see the team thinking the POs are not insurmountable, ie. the chance is reasonably greater than zero -- which you seem to be agreeing with?
But now we know that no waiver claim was submitted so likely the whole thing is moot.
I hope that they have hope and play hard. The games are far more entertaining when they do.
ReplyDeleteI also hope they finish in the lottery, but that isn't a lock, although 83 going down helps.
I also hope that THE EVALUATOR clears 2,22,33,43,16,13,and 67 (maybe 26 too, but as 3rd pair he's ok) off the roster (or not re-sign) by next TC and brings back some useful pieces (including the return on 44 once he gets traded in the summer)
I hope 83 gets healthy signs for 5 years and doesn't miss more than 15 games a year due to injury.
I also hope I win the lottery and don't have to live where its this freaking cold for damn near half the yeàr.
A better question would be: should the Oilers have sent Hall back to junior to save a year of his ELC?
ReplyDeleteGarfield is a fat, asshole cat, who is willing to mistreat his friends for some fucking lasagna.
ReplyDeleteI wouldn't trust any rumours from Garfield.
Why is MacT ruining Schremp!?!?!?
ReplyDeleteI think we have to go back to the beginning:
ReplyDeleteShould Kevin Lowe have held out on trading Pronger till he got fair return?
WG...
ReplyDeleteThat's the amazing thing for me too -- that the players seem to be aware this is not the year, yet are playing with some conviction and hope.
Renney has them totally bought into the long term plan methinks.
The Oil have been doing much better in terms of the SC count but it's also true they were playing less then stellar comp so that has to be taken into consideration.
ReplyDeleteI had some optimism when I thought 83 might be back but now you're looking at 10's line having to pull an awfully fucking lot of weight and the PP still sucks and the PK hasn't been an issue since Ctl but that's only because they haven't been taking that minors.
Do we expect that to continue?
If were going back in time I want Lowe to not demand repayment of Comrie's bonus and take Perry and the 1st that Murray offered.
ReplyDeleteThat wasn't the beginning...
ReplyDeleteWould you rather have Lowe got Perry for Comrie, or the eventual return of Woywitka, Schremp & Syvret (last two via picks)?
Keep in mind Woywitka was part of the package that got us Pronger.
AND, was Janet really Yoko Gretzky?
WG, I like the way you think.
ReplyDeleteDennis,
ReplyDeleteI expect a lot of 4-3 and 4-2 losses.
I don't care if the team is in the lottery because last year was god damned awful to watch.
ReplyDeleteFinishing in the top ten will still get us a guy like Duncan Siemens and that kid straight up plays the blueline.
What's more important to me is that Toonces the EVALUATOR will have decided who to call up to replace Hemsky by next Monday.
If were going back in time I want Lowe to not demand repayment of Comrie's bonus and take Perry and the 1st that Murray offered.
ReplyDeleteIf we're going to really go back then I don't want Lowe making on the call on dealing Weight and why the hell did he trade Guerin in November for dancin anson?
Holi,

I apologize for the sarcastic responses to your legitimate question, and would like to officially welcome Darryl Sutter to the Al Gore.
So who breaks the Ducks' drought tonight? Lubo, Lupul or Marchant?
ReplyDeleteSo who breaks the Ducks' drought tonight? Lubo, Lupul or Marchant?
ReplyDeleteI know I speak for the combined wisdom of the Oilogosphere when I answer your question: Yes.
What's that Lubo? Hemmer fell into the abandoned well?
ReplyDeleteLead em to me boy!!!
Very interested to see what Tambo does. My first guess is ... nothing.
Second guess is Jones on the 89 line and Reddox up.
Lastly Omark, although personally I think that would be the best move. See what the Swede can do.
We have two young-ish guys in the NHL who are Pt./PG 40 goal, + players. (Both top 10 in AHL goals) One of them may be a PK'er.
ReplyDeleteHemsky goes down. We don't bring either up.
Liam Reddox
25GP 13G 10A 23Pts

1PPG 3SHG

Linus Omark
25GP 13G 13A 26Pts

I will be surprised if they give Omark a shot if he's still ignoring his end of the ice. You know, if Rob Schremp Hockey was any indication.
ReplyDeleteDucey, no impact players really, but a few that would have been nice additions and superior to current options in the lineup.
ReplyDeleteTwo that come immediately to mind are Mattias Rittola, who's a fiesty bugger that would fit right in on the 3rd or 4th line by all accounts and can play in his own end a bit (worlds better than SMac or Struds) and recently Woodguy's suggestion of Brian Lee, who the light hasn't gone on for, but has about a season's worth of games under his belt, all the tools, pedigree and is better than Strudwick, or possibly Vandy at this point.
Young guys who are low risk bets and could use a shot. If they don't pan out nothing lost, if they do then nice.
Ducey, here are their HF blurbs:
ReplyDeleteMattias Rittola
Brian Lee
IMO these are the guys you pick up from waivers to try out if you're a rebuilding team.
SB: That was actually a good deal by Lowe because even though I loved Guerin - the Oilers in '98 post-Guerin along with the '06 team are probably the two best Oilers teams of the last 20 years - Carter was a good player by then and he got a first and second rounder in that deal as well.
ReplyDeleteBut then the Weight deal got us nothing because Reasoner was a top niner but a bottom sixer and Hecht wasn't the one-shot scorer Lowe pimped him as. And of course we saw the vindictive side of Lowe in the Comrie move when he cut off his nose to spite his face.
I did love Guerin, though, and was glad he won another Cup and was pleased to see he was still a useful player right up until he retired. I wish he'd been a little bit younger and us another year along because he seems like a guy who'd be super-strudwick in that he was a good guy but could still play. I still remember going to the bar to watch his first game as an Oiler - a win over Fla - and here was a big guy with a mean streak and a great shot and could play two ways.
I also remember the night the Oilers broke a long winless streak at Colorado and did it with Guerin having to play D after the Oilers lost a couple of D early on. Afterwards he made a nice joke about how he found a pair of Paul Coffey's old skates.
Spoiler: Rob Schremp Hockey was still good for 5th on REL corsi on the Isles last year with +7,5 and 4th on Corsi ON with 1.34. Sheltered for sure, but still pushing the puck the right way, that's more than JFJ, Smac, Strudwick, or any of the dinglers they kept over him.
ReplyDeleteSerious question to the oilgosphere:
Max Pacioretty for Ales Hemsky
You go fot it?
(Base elements of the trade, can add picks/minor players)
*for
ReplyDeleteMy one game snap shot of Omark is that he's not completely lost in his own end nor did he cherry pick. But it was one game so...
ReplyDeleteNothing really will be fixed until MGMT admit that Tommy Salo is a sieve and is killing our playoff chances.
ReplyDeleteI'm fine with management avoiding the waiver wire for now. There are still potential call-ups on the farm and this season is about the kids anyways. I don't think this run lasts but at best you are picking up players for an 8th spot finish. If we're flirting with 8th at the deadline maybe you pick up some veteran filler but at this point I think it is false hope. That said, I think the kids are good enough that Toonces 4.0 really needs to be thinking about hitting the playoffs next year. (I realize this whole post can be interpreted as parody but I do think we're past the point of trying to hit the playoffs this year)
I'm guessing Toonces would have taken Ritola on waivers however the time they're on waivers isn't long enough for him to properly assess whether to pick them up.
ReplyDeleteWhen he decides to bite the bullet and calls the league they tell him that player was on waivers a month ago.
He'll be calling the league about Bettman sometime around xmas.
uh Brian Lee not Bettman.
ReplyDeleteWasn't Guerin a key member of that '98 US Olympic team that smashed up their hotel rooms?
ReplyDeleteOilers win tonight.
ReplyDeleteParaphrasing.... "at the end of a winning streak you always win a couple you shouldn't, at the end of a losing streak you also lose a couple you shouldn't...." - MacT.
Oilers will stay hot until Vancouver rolls into town and puts the boots to us.
Flames/Tampa Over is a monster play tonight for those of us on Bowmans ;)
We should trade Hemsky for Schremp.
ReplyDeleteAnd of course we saw the vindictive side of Lowe in the Comrie move when he cut off his nose to spite his face.
ReplyDeleteI have it on decent authority that Cal Nichols pulled the trigger on that debacle.
I will be surprised if they give Omark a shot if he's still ignoring his end of the ice. You know, if Rob Schremp Hockey was any indication.
ReplyDeleteDifference there is that the clock is ticking on Omark with his out clause next year.
Gotta see him in the NHL to get a handle on what he is at some point. No better time than the present.
I am worried about losing Markannen, Conklin or Morrison on waivers.
ReplyDeleteI also can't believe that the Oilers would give 28 another shot in the top nine rather than recalling Omark.
ReplyDeleteIt's not like 28's tearing it up out there or anything and Horc's Kids have been seeing all the toughs so the opp's there for the others to tear it up a little bit.
And I also wouldn't balk at calling up Reddox or ROM either. Let's see how the PK looks again once we actually start taking penalties.
They traded Stan Weir to Detroit for cash. CASH!! The Patron Saint of the Moustache was sold on the open market like a sack of magic beans.
ReplyDeleteI have no faith in the management of this team.
Fuhr wants to put Pepsi logos on his pads, and is threatening to quit to become a car salesman if he can't?
ReplyDeleteDamn that Fuhr is shrewd.
Uni,
ReplyDeleteIts tough to get too outraged about the failure to mess around with Brian Lee or some guy named after a cough drop.
Lee is not tough and doesn't have a sufficiently high enough compete level. We have enough of that around here. Is he any better than Belle?
Rittola has 5 pts in 15 games and is -5 with Tampa. I don't see him really beating out any of our top 9. Maybe he is a little better than Fraser, but its likely a wash.
I am fine with not bringing up Omark for a while. They have played without Hemsky for a while now and you do not mess with a hot streak.
flamingpavelbure, don't defend Schremp by saying he is better than 33 or 22. He is likely a better scorer than a lot of guys on a lot of teams 4th lines - but then so is Robert Nilsson.
The question is do you want him over anyone in our top 9?
I don't.
Ducey: Did i mention scoring?
ReplyDeleteI said pushing the puck the right way. I believe not of our 4th liners are exactly doing that atm.
Also there's no risk taking Lee, as we're carrying 3 anchors around.
Lee is just utilising your roster spots intelligently. At worst, send him down and call up Belle.
Just listened to Dan Barnes explain on Gregor's show why he wouldn't bring up anyone to fill 83's spor on the roster.
ReplyDeleteIt mostly revolved around the fact that the Oilers have won 4 in a row and Omark doesn't have an NHL pedigree.
He did say he'd bring up a guy from the farm is the guy on the farm had scored 20 goals in the NHL the year before.
Lordy.
I'm not big on making "hater" posts, but as the guy who is supposed to be "The Man" as far as local MSM NHL writers (Matheson excepted), he just embarrassed himself in a big way.
I agree LT. Injuries have become a serious concern with Hemmer. In my estimation, he's the guy they have to dangle at the trade deadline assuming of course no takers for the usual suspects with unwanted contracts. Would love nothing more than a contender running into injury problems in goal around the deadline so we could dump Khabibulin, but that probably requires more stars aligning than we can reasonably expect.
ReplyDeleteDetroit's reasonably stacked at D. I wonder if they would consider something like Kronwall for Hemsky to help them make a run and is that selling low on Ales? If so, how about something like Hemsky and Smid for Jack Johnson of the Kings?
Rob Schremp on your roster is fine if your team sucks shit, but if you're serious about the playoffs or actually winning the cup then guys like him are not on your team.
ReplyDeleteSeguin's not going to the juniors this year. (I'd been having fun with B's fans at work calling him Tyler Daigle)
ReplyDeleteRe: Hemsky.
ReplyDeleteKeep him. Groin tear/strain should not be unusual for a guy who only played 21 games last year. What the Oilers have to keep an eye out for is repetitive injuries to Hemsky, or concussions. New injuries will happen - that's just part of the game.
ReplyDeleteKeep him. Groin tear/strain should not be unusual for a guy who only played 21 games last year. What the Oilers have to keep an eye out for is repetitive injuries to Hemsky, or concussions. New injuries will happen - that's just part of the game.
They really need to have team yoga.
Prevents a ton of injuries (if anecdotal evidence is to be believed).
I've taken yoga and it made me waaay more bendy, I can imagine how much it would do for a professional athlete, who is already is very good shape.
FPB... you're missing the point on RSH.
ReplyDeleteWG... yeah, I agree Omark will likely be up at some point. But I'm thinking trade deadline. And if he refuses to play D, maybe he doesn't come up at all... being here won't change that. I think at this point he's most likely to be trade bait than anything else. The Braintrust won't let anything resembling bad habits near these kids... stupidity yes... laziness no.
you do not mess with a hot streak
ReplyDeleteThere's half a dozen hairs on Sidney Crosby's upper lip that would back you on that one, Duce.
Just think. While Ovechkin spent the entire offseason cruising around on a yacht in the Black Sea with teenage Ukrainian girls. Sid Crosby was on a rink in some remote town taking 5000 faceoffs and shooting 10000 pucks a day.
ReplyDeleteThere is no need to recall anyone at the moment because (1) they are on a win streak, and they aren't going to change the lineup because of that, and (2) they don't have a particularly heavy schedule at the moment, and (3) they are looking at what Jones and Jacques can do right now.
ReplyDeleteWhy call up a guy to sit in the pressbox and get cold? You call them up when they are about to go into the lineup.
Pitlick (I view Pitlick as a NHL RW, not a centre) and Hamilton may make both Hemsky and Penner expendible. Also, both Paajarvi and Penner can play right wing.
Godot... that would be far beyond both their draft pedigrees. There's quite a bit of blue in that sky.
ReplyDeletePitlick (I view Pitlick as a NHL RW, not a centre) and Hamilton may make both Hemsky and Penner expendible.
ReplyDeleteIn 5 years that statement will come as close to being true as it ever will be, but I don't think it will actually every be "true".
5 years, maybe more.
In the meantime the Oilers need NHL players who outscore toughs like these two do.
Not many players become tough minute outscorers, both 27 and 83 are. You are severely under estimating those two and seeing the two kids at the very peak of what they *might* become.
Lots of water between those teo suppositions.
I think the options with Hemsky have been reduced.
ReplyDelete1) Offer him a one-year extension this summer for $6.5 million. OR
2) Don nothing this summer, and hope he stays healthy next year, puts up big numbers, which allows the Oilers a) to trade him at the deadline next year or (b) offer him a long term contract at that point.
If I'm building a team, I don't know if there is room on the same team for both Hemsky and Gagner, because they don't play particularly well with each other. I think you have to choose one or the other. I would choose Gagner. Hemsky is too singular as a player.
Just think. While Ovechkin spent the entire offseason cruising around on a yacht in the Black Sea with teenage Ukrainian girls. Sid Crosby was on a rink in some remote town taking 5000 faceoffs and shooting 10000 pucks a day.
ReplyDeleteSo which one is smarter?
With guaranteed NHL contracts neith can influence their NHL salary for a long time.
I guess its all about internal desire to win. Or an internal desire to get with nubile Ukrainians in the sun on a yacht.
//In 5 years that statement will come as close to being true as it ever will be, but I don't think it will actually every be "true".//
ReplyDeleteHemsky and Penner both have 1.67 years left on their contracts. Pitlick and Hamilton will both have one AHL season under their belt in 1.67 years.
You de-risk/hedge the transition by keeping one of the two.
The organization clearly favors Hemsky over Penner. Pat Quinn is probably the only guy in the organization, and in the MSM who believes in Penner. (Staples the exception that proves the rule). Stauffer was out with the dagger for Penner early this year, and I take that as the indicator of which way the Oilers are leaning between the two.
I would lean to keeping Penner over Hemsky, all other things being equal (like desire to stay).
@wg
ReplyDeletemarketing opportunities are quite often predicated by positive performance and image.
there is a lot more to be gained off the court/field/pitch/rink than there is on it, for most premier athletes.
i think "desire to win" can be used broadly.
_______
does anyone have more info on pitlick's omission from the US team? that would seem to be a bit disapointing, no?
There's quite a bit of blue in that sky
ReplyDeleteThat's the way some guys roll.
Pitlick & Hamilton are destined to replace Brule & Cogliano to upsize the Top-9.
The Oil needs to keep/obtain one more Top-6 winger.
@Mr D, didn't you hear, we're trading for Shremp. so top 6 covered.
ReplyDeleteMr. D...
ReplyDeleteThats a long way from saying replace penner and hemsky with post thirty picks. I know brule and cogs are first rounders but they havent nearly covered their spots yet.
I hope you're mot arguing with me,
ReplyDeleteBecause I'm agreeing with you.
In two years.
ReplyDeleteHall, Horcoff, Eberle
Penner, Gagner, Paajarvi
sign a checking line
Hamilton, Lander, Pitlick
Or in two years.
ReplyDeleteHall, XXX, Eberle
Penner, Gagner, Paajarvi
XXX, Horcoff, XXX
Hamilton, Lander, Pitlick
Godot,
ReplyDeleteStill nothing that supports your supposition that those two can replace the other two.
Jfry,
I was careful to only mention only their NHL salaries. Ovechkin seems to do ok so far with endorsements, it decline if his play declines.
I think Crosby is concerned with being considered among the all time greats. I don't think that makes Ovechkins top 20.
I still don't know who wins. I married a nubile Ukrainian, they're fun.
Just think. While Ovechkin spent the entire offseason cruising around in some remote town and shooting 10000 teenage Ukrainian girls a day, Sid Crosby was on a rink on a yacht in the Black Sea taking 5000 faceoffs with pucks.
ReplyDeleteMine is better and closer to the truth.
Huh, Todd White, eh?
ReplyDeleteFraser better have a good game tonight!
Penner's an extremely intelligent guy, in a world of sports morons. Little wonder he doesn't get very good press.
ReplyDeleteAs for wanting to hang around in California during the summer, well...who wouldn't?
Wine or scotch for the game?
ReplyDeleteTough choice.
I hope Omark gets a call up simply for selfish reasons:
I want to see him play.
Godot: Jones and Jacques can't do jackshit, we know it, they know it, the whole fucking world knows it.
ReplyDeleteFinally getting to watch a full game for the first time in a couple weeks.
ReplyDeleteI'm betting the kids flop as a result. Sorry all.
@Woodguy
ReplyDeleteI say "may", not "will". I also followed up later by saying that you need to keep one of Hemsky/Penner.
Based on what the Oilers have, IMHO, I don't think Hemsky is the best long term fit, but I'd wager the Oilers powers-that-be think differently.
FPB
ReplyDeleteI was making an observation of what I thought the Oilers are doing, not an endorsement of what they are doing.
Ferraro <3 One giant plus to TSN games. I can't stand the others.
ReplyDeleteHemsky and Penner are great fits on any team.
ReplyDeleteThe only question is whether we can sign each or either to a reasonable UFA deal.
No way. Ovechkin never touched a hockey stick this offseason.
Ray Shero probably hugs Crosby every morning before practice as he's the only thing keeping him from being on Sportsnet with Kipper and Maclean.
Oh your scenario doesn't have him holding a hockey stick so maybe...
ReplyDeleteBut Crosby wouldn't allow himself to enjoy the sun and sea like that.
He'd rather be in an unfinished basement hammering slappers off the foundation.

ReplyDeleteYou know Ray I don't think Perry does anything inadvertently. He's kind of scummy that way.
ReplyDeleteKris:
ReplyDeleteYou researched the Holodymr too I see.
To the commenter asking about why Pitlick wasn't brought to the USA's camp, the Pipeline Boys scoop everyone once again it appears.

Renney has been getting credit for some good things lately, but Smid on the PP cancels some of that out.
ReplyDeleteDucks goalie looks like he's some kind of refugee from The Green Mile.
ReplyDelete"36 year old injury prone netminder"
ReplyDeleteAgain, Steve, nice signing!
Tool.
Wow the Ducks are pretty shitty.
Horcoff gone to the dressing room. Not good.
The hockey gods just realized the Oilers have won 4 in a row...
ReplyDeleteBam! - Horc Knee injury
Just remember. If Horcoff is hurt and the Oilers win you can't call anyone up because it would mess with a winning streak.
ReplyDelete16 out for a shift with 14 and 4.
ReplyDelete10 and 83 gone?
Christ.
Horcoff schmorcoff...so we go back to being a lottery hunt team big deal.
ReplyDeleteLowe obviously paid Anaheim to take out Comrade Horcov, lest we continue to win.
ReplyDeleteIf Horcoff and Hemsky are both out, let's go for broke and put 4 between 14 and 91 to see if that'll fly in a couple years' time. What've we got to lose?
ReplyDeleteHockey games?
ReplyDeleteIf not for the fateful injury train last season, we would be talking about Niedereitters development in the CHL, and not Taylor Hall.
ReplyDeleteThere's too many holes to be a playoff team, so maybe the injuries are a blessing.
I hate to see Lubo get caught like that, but that should have been a tripping penalty on him.
ReplyDeleteBtw, how's theformercaptainethanmoreau doing with CBJ?
ReplyDeleteThat sure looked like tripping
ReplyDeleteAt least it's the Ducks feed. I was dreading those Edmonton hick announcers.
ReplyDeleteDespite the presence of Lubo and Marchant the Ducks still have an extraordinarily high douche quotient.
ReplyDeleteI would submit perhaps near the top of the pops. Of course Perry puts it through the roof jus by his lonesome.
Paajarvi has looked so much better these last few games.
You guys realise Taylor Hall's going to win the cup more than once, don't you?
ReplyDeleteJF Jacques goes full speed into the corner and goes out of his way to make sure he's the first one into the boards.
ReplyDeleteI wonder why he's considered injury prone, lol.
Top of the Pops was cancelled, Black Dog.
ReplyDeleteDoes Darren Pang know what number Gilbert Brule wears?
ReplyDeleteHe's been "good"?
I remember The Pig And Whistle.
ReplyDeleteThere was (sob) a pub in my neighbourhood called The Wee Jaggy Nettle.
Unfortunately it was gone by the time we moved here.
doritogrande; Shut up. Brule has been awesome. Don't knock anyone with a platform touting Brule (or Cogliano). Or any Oiler with questionable trade value. We want other people to think these people are good so we can trade them for really good (average) players.
ReplyDeleteCarlton Showband. I remember it like it was 40 years ago. :-)
ReplyDeleteI think my Don Messer tribute's still on my site, in case anyone gets nostalgic.
ReplyDeleteYou guys are really old and Penner is kind of funny.
ReplyDeleteBtw, how's theformercaptainethanmoreau doing with CBJ?
ReplyDeleteAt one point while he was on IR they had the 2nd best winning percentage in the NHL.
He came back and they went on a 5 game losing streak.
True story.
I remember when a bag of chips and a can of pop cost fifty cents.
ReplyDeleteThat's for the whole shooting match!
I'm sure LT can beat that.
More wine?
ReplyDeleteDon't mind if I do.
Marg Osborne drove into our town and gave a concert when I was a kid. Biggest crowd I remember as a kid. Seriously.
ReplyDeletehttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wxs077JzPHA
I had the chances at 10-5 for the Oilers; 7-4 at ST and the Oilers hit a whopping four posts in the first frame: 27 hit the pipe on the breakway and also had the puck go off his skate and hit the post on a 91 pass; 2 and 91 also hit posts.
ReplyDeleteGreat period by the Oilers but it's all for naught if 10's done and it didn't look good, did it?
What did Penner say?
Coke and chips= 35 cents.
ReplyDeleteFuckyou Koivu?
ReplyDeleteJFJ is a dolt
ReplyDeleteGagner picked the wrong man
ReplyDeleteLots of empty seats tonight.
ReplyDeleteYikes. Smid about 5 ft too close to the boards there. Protect the middle of the ice.
@ hunter
ReplyDeleteWhat's your site if you don't mind my asking?
I wonder if the Duck's goalie has a slit on the bottom of his leg.
ReplyDeleteDucks announcers laughing at Jacques.
ReplyDeletetuco: click on my name it takes you right there.
ReplyDeleteI don't care how big and fast JFJ is, he brings NOTHING to the team.
ReplyDeleteBring up Reddox. At least he'll do something
Watching this sucker streaming live from McCarran International in Vegas. We've come a long way.
ReplyDelete'Selanne is an underrated faceoff man and now he steps in and ... loses the draw to Cogliano'
ReplyDeleteProbably underrated is not the adjective you were looking for there.
LMHF:
ReplyDeletecoming home, or arriving in LV?
Just remember. If Horcoff is hurt and the Oilers win you can't call anyone up because it would mess with a winning streak.
ReplyDeleteIf Horcoff's hurt, there's no point in calling anyone up - you might as well just dress me for all the good it's going to do you.
Perry the diving douchebag
ReplyDeleteI would actually like to watch you play out there. Just don't score on your own net.
ReplyDeleteSpeeds - Heading home, for a couple days anyway. Then it's off to an eerily early wife's family Christmas in Southern Alberta.
ReplyDeleteDidn't drop a bunch in the casino or anything, just a rather disappointing half marathon run ruined by 6 miles worth of severe cramps in both legs.
This fin rotation the forwards do at the top of the PK sure leaves the points wide open.
ReplyDeleteI would actually like to watch you play out there. Just don't score on your own net.
ReplyDeleteThere is no way that I would, unless you can do so while thrashing erratically about like a fish out of water, right by the gate to your team's bench.
Which you can only do if Khabibulin is in net.
If Horcoff's hurt, there's no point in calling anyone up - you might as well just dress me for all the good it's going to do you.
ReplyDeleteWhat? We can't just bring up Reddox, Omark and Belle, claim Todd White off waivers, trade for Rob Schremp, and plan the parade?
Oilers PK might crack 70% efficiency any minute now...
ReplyDeleteAny bets on what the Oilers do with Horcov out?
ReplyDeleteI'm guessing Gagner and Cogliano move up, Brule plays 3c and Fraser stays on 4c. Maybe a call to the Ox to play wing somewhere.
Someone watch the Avs Panthers highlights on NHL.com.
ReplyDeleteIt's the most pathetic excuse for having a good broadcast i've ever seen. The image quality is worst than my camera and it fucks up all the time.
Half marathon, hey?
ReplyDeleteI've gone to Melissa's road race before. Not to run the 10K or half marathon, mind you. a couple of friends have done that, but I just go for beers afterwards.
You stay on the strip? If so, did you check out that massive city centre complex? What's it like?
Why are the Oilers so terrible and boring at home and passable on the road?
ReplyDeleteAnd there she wrote.
ReplyDeleteYou could see that one coming for about 2 minutes.
ReplyDeleteThe Oilers have played mostly bad Eastern Conference teams on the road, and play very few of them at home.
ReplyDeleteSpeeds - Stayed at the Luxor. Wouldn't recommend it. City Centre looks very nice. Might have to try that next time.
ReplyDeleteFinally boarding call; later all!
She's not meant to be tonight when Penner gets 5 wacks for a dollar and can't cash. Hiller's been excellent.
ReplyDeleteNot all bad considering no Horc and Hemmer.
Roger Waters, OAP.
ReplyDeleteShould be quite a show.
Hiller needs to paint his mask silver.
ReplyDeletehall and eberle sure look lost without horcoff....
ReplyDeleteJones.
ReplyDeleteholy F, Ducks have got away with a few stick fouls tonight.
ReplyDeleteJones! - he's had jump tonight.
Suck that Omark
ReplyDeleteIs it surprising, or sad that Ryan Jones is playing the way he is the last week or so?
ReplyDeleteHuge save by Hiller. Hold on to your lunches kids, this one's going to end well.
Sutton hit Hall and Hall was like a tank.
ReplyDeleteMPS the forgotten rookie, with the assist.
ReplyDeletePP - well there goes the momentum.
ReplyDeleteyou guys are a bunch of jokers! no praise for Magnus on that pass?
ReplyDeleteThat was epic. 6'6" 245lb andy sutton gets sat the f__k down by Hall who then casually skates towards him. What a player.
ReplyDeleteListening on radio...Michaels is not bad. I'm getting use to him. But, those "Rod's Classics" games remind me how good that guy really was.
ReplyDeleteAs pretty as the Hall dash was, Gagner can't be more open for a tap-in.
ReplyDeleteSiI'm falling in love with an 18 year old boy.
ReplyDeleteIs it ok to say that?
Foster isn't good enough for the pp.
ReplyDeleteJones=Gilbert's tough older brother.
ReplyDeleteBeauty pass by Magnum.
ReplyDeleteCheeseburgers!
ReplyDeleteWhat a pass by Whitney!
ReplyDeleteThe Fat man!
Penner!
ReplyDeletethey even have ryan jones on the isolation camera. hilarious.
ReplyDeleteha ha my complaining made them do that.
ReplyDeleteThat's the most emotional I've ever seen Dustin Penner.
ReplyDeleteHe must really like Corey Perry's helmet.
Slipper:
ReplyDeleteIt's okay. He's legal.
That's the most emotional I've ever seen Dustin Penner.
ReplyDeleteHe was pretty ecstatic on the ot winner against the Habs.
Give Penner the C, considering he's leaving soon.
ReplyDeleteSam gagner makes the play of the game and penner gets his just desserts.
ReplyDeleteYou know, that was a good goal and everything but really. If Penner had been moving his feet he could have stickhandled or shot.
ReplyDeleteLazy=fewer options.
Oilers should hire Forsberg to come over and work with the team.
ReplyDeletewhoops never mind. good call hunter
ReplyDeleteDucks goalie was beaten and he knew it.
ReplyDeleteThis is why you don't use Gagner in the shootout.
ReplyDeleteStripes!!!!! he got the hands!!!
ReplyDeleteFFS!
