This has been a very busy day for Oiler fans. The Renney announcement has been followed by a trickle of player reaction. In this article from Canwest Shawn Horcoff is quoted as saying:
“Tom is the first guy at the rink every day and he’s constantly watching video. He’s a pretty big Xs and Os guy. And when someone puts in the time he does, he’s going to want his players to be prepared. I think it will be a little different Pat was a little more old school. He left it up to us a lot of times to prepare ourselves. I think with Tom, you’re going to see someone who’s quite diligent about the preparation.”
JF Jacques isn't going to like the film sessions.

ReplyDeleteI had a recreational ball-hockey season go sideways after the coach left it to the players to prepare strategically for games.
I used to think the talk of Quinn's "Old Tyme Hockey" was overblown. But with this, the Great JF Jacques experiment and his refusal to match lines I'm wondering if Quinn is really going to be any less busy in his "Special Advisory" role.
This is going to be great. I'm genuinely excited to see this team under Renney. He's a bona fide "new school" coach.

Let's hope the teaching begins and that "a" is for accountability. Personally, I don't have much belief in Renny, but my fingers are crossed and I'm trying to smile.

ReplyDeleteI hope to high heaven JFJ has a starring role in some other team's films next season. It's doomed hope, I know, but it's got Renney going for it now. Hasn't he already seen this movie a million times? Does he really want to watch it a million more? If Renney has hope for JFJ, should we?

ReplyDeleteAnd Traktor - teaming good players with other good players to face good players, rather than having the team's best two-way center drag around JF Jacques and Patrick O'Sullivan? What a novel concept, eh? Bet we see it, and I bet it works like it did in 2008-09.

As a full time bandwagon rangers fan during the entire Renney era, i predict he's going to be great for exactly 1-2 seasons, then people will start complaining he's not the guy to win any cups.

ReplyDeleteI think it just continues to display the barrier that the Oilers' administration puts up between themselves and the players, coaches and fans.

If you are still on the fence about this move, the fact that Terry Jones doesn't like it, removes all doubt, it must be a good move.
Terry Jones aside, I don't believe there are too many observers of the game who believed Quinn was the right guy for a rebuilding team. Or who couldn't see that he took a mediocre team to the bottom (injury assisted, of course).

When Quinn coached the Leafs his standard line was 'he's a professional, he has to figure it out' whenever anyone screwed up, again.
ReplyDeleteUsually one of the D, quite often McCabe, who was often out of position.
Quinn and Ley would not or could not teach the Leafs basic positioning - it was common to see McCabe leave his man to go to where the puck was despite the fact that a teammate was already engaged in a one on one battle there.
So its not surprising really.
They still need some guys who can play though.

ReplyDeleteWell, I was one of the guys that liked the idea of Renney as head coach when they were going through the interview process anyway, so I am happy with this move. I wasn't opposed to Quinn as head coach either, but after watching last season wear on and his post-game presser's I started to lose faith in Quinn being the right guy for the job for this season. His body language told us a lot (of course not to mention his comments). And I never liked his calling out of players so frequently. He didn’t always say a specific name, but it was pretty easy to figure out who is was referring to often. I’m not a fan of that whatsoever…. A team is a team and you stick up for one another and take defeat as a team.
ReplyDeleteAnd I think Renney will be able to communicate well with the players and be as good a motivator as any. I think his attention to details and emphasis on framework and proper preparation will bode well with this club and I think you'll see the players start to really play hard for him as well.

Regardless of the effect Renney will have, next year's team will almost certainly be better; unless of course the same rash of injuries happen.
ReplyDeleteHemsky in the lineup, possibly Souray, and a hopefully fully healthy Horcoff will go a long way to improving the point totals. If Tambs actually gets some more NHL players via trade or signings then the improvement will be even more noticeable.

ReplyDeleteYou do if you don't want those offensive elements to get stuck in the defensive zone when the other coach goes PVP on the road.
The game has advanced to the point where you have to line match, and differentially coach at the individual player level to have success as a team in the NHL.

That is really the only thing wrong with him.
When you have stacked Canadian teams at the Olympics, World Cup, World Junior, or under-18, line matching doesn't matter because you have the talent advantage.
The point of line matching is to obviously give you the best chance to win games. Letting guys prepare themselves for a season means Quinn/Tambo now have a real good perspective on the dressing room and player attitudes.
ReplyDeleteTambo had the opportunity to see the team from above, now Quinn knows what we have within. Combined they should have a really good idea who should go, who should stay, and who needs to be brought in.
