Tangled Up in Blue

The number of kids up front who might be able to keep their heads above water next season at the NHL level is impressive. We should take a moment to point out that "survival" is down the road apiece from "helping your team win." With that understood, all of Seguin/Hall, MPS, Eberle, Vande Velde and a few others might be able to help in 10-11 given the chance. Here are their Desjardins' NHLE's:
  1. Jordan Eberle 22-24-46
  2. Taylor Hall 17-29-46
  3. Tyler Seguin 19-22-41
  4. Magnus Paarjarvi-Svensson 16-22-38
  5. Linus Omark 20-15-35
  6. Chris Vande Velde 13-21-34
Riley Nash is unlikely to be signed or he'd be on the list. The blueline for 2009-10 is a completely different deal. Desjardins' NHLE's have less importance for defenders because their primary job is to defend (or at least do the work required to get the puck going in the right direction). So, instead of Desjardins' NHLE's I offer you the Falcons blue and their plus minus per game:
  1. Johan Motin -.091 per game
  2. Dean Arsene -.214 per game
  3. Alex Plante -.224 per game
  4. Theo Peckham -.270 per game
  5. Taylor Chorney -.625 per game
  6. Jeff Petry -1.25 per game (small sample)
It's unfair to list Petry like this (and his Desjardins was a cool 4-22-26--very good) but I think the entire group (especially the youngsters) should spend another season in the AHL based on their performance in 2009-10. Pechkam's late season NHL performance (11gp, 0-1-1 -3) may mean he gets consideration for the 6-7D job at the major league level, but the Oilers are going to bring in some defensemen this summer and that's for sure. NHL defensemen and AHL defensemen, this club needs to add depth at the position.

Especially if MPS can make the big squad.

  2. So what was so different about the farm when Pisani and Horcoff graduated? How difficult would it be to recreate that environment in OKC?

As an aside, I have always loved the UC Santa Cruz Banana Slugs as a mascot. I'd like something similarly goofy in OKC.

That was quite the amateur scouting report by "Thomas" on your site's Seguin/Hall shooting percentage analysis.

It's a worthwhile read, and for any who missed the link in the prior thread, here it is again.

I wonder if The Braintrust has asked Eberle about Hall's dressing room demeanour?

  4. Horcoff hardly spent any time in the minors. 24 games and 2 games. He was basically NHL 4th line ready out of Michigan State.

He was in the AHL just long enough to demonstrate that he was too good for the AHL.

  6. Montreal has mastered the genius of being horribly out played, but their shooters are so good they go post and in on their few opportunities, while Halak's so good, he only gives the Penguins post and out.

    Sigh.

  7. JW had a great article up at HOckey or die about how things work out on average for how much teams use their depth players these days.

Based on how much time our call-up d-man is likely to get this coming year anyways, I'd suggest it makes a hell of a lot more sense to bring in 3-4 defensemen in the offseason (depending on whether you think Johnson is a keeper) and have Peckham as the first callup. He's going to end up here anyways, its just a question of whether he's more valuable to OKC to start the season, or as the 6-7 guy in Edmonton.

From the numbers I've seen, I'll put my money on Oklahoma.

  8. That Thomas poster has posted a similar version of that on HF. He's a Whalers fans and a rather biased one at that. And the negatives he brought up about Hall's game either doesn't gibe with what I've seen from him live and it doesn't appear that we watched the same Top Prospects Game.

  10. Peckham won't clear waivers.

He's #6 or #7. Sink or swim time for him.

  13. Godot...

Peckham signed as a 19 yo giving him 4 years or 160 games of exemption. I don't think waivers will be an issue.

  14. LT- Thanks. Missed (skipped?) it the first time around.

So it takes more vets and therefore, more money. Keep the kids from getting in over the heads. At odds with the current "push 'em in off the pier" strategy.

ABebooks shows a dozen copies of the Conacher book.

He also was Foster Hewitt's colour man for the 1972 Summit Series.

Thanks Ribs - too bad about calling them the Barons.

  15. LT:

I think Peckham has to clear waivers, in which case I'd be pretty surprised if EDM were willing to send him back to the AHL whether it would help or not. What's your thoughts - if Peckham does have to clear waivers, do you risk sending him through, or keep him up in the NHL?

But, other than that small problem, no disagreement from me, I don't think any of them couldn't use a bit of AHL time. If Petry or one of them starts to look really good, you can always call them up later in the season.

  16. Does seem weird looking back that the Oil would deal all of Grebs, Lubo, and Staios at the dealine, knowing also that they had Souray on the IR already requesting a trade.

They knew then that 4 out of their top 6 Dmen would not be with the team next year.

But I'm betting this time, this time, they have a Plan. Y'know, beyond getting Whitney and throwing Chorney to the lions.

Are you sure Peckham would have to clear waivers?

He signed in '07 as a 19 yo, and doesn't have 160 games.

  18. speeds: I like Peckham, he's a tough hombre. I wouldn't risk waivers on him, especially if he shows up in shape and doesn't have any injury troubles through training camp.

yeah, it's certainly an opinion worth hearing.

"Thomas" might, in a way, be lending some weight to the high shooting percentage argument for Seguin with the following quote:

"I don't have shot totals handy (though I know the OHL records them), but from what I've seen of Seguin the last two seasons, he's not shooting more this season than he was late last season when he started producing offensively."

Of course, it's also possible that he meant Seguin started to generate WAY more shots later in the 2008/9 season?

  20. Did you guys know Hasek had a .939 SV% in the playoffs the year he took Buffalo to the finals?

Because apparently only Patrick Roy and Jaroslav Halak have ever been hot goalies in the playoffs worth mentioning.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Not that Gonchar's goal is going to matter.

speeds, I was hoping the OHL scoresheets had some data, but they're useless.

If Horcoff's 28 pts in 24 games showed him to be ready, should we take anything from Eberle's 23 points in 20 games?

Boucher was hurt. Looked ugly... kinda similar to Roloson's injury in '06.

  27. Can't think that Milquetoast knew 24 was going to move.

    Tough to predict insanity.

If he knew that I bet Grebs doesn't move.

Milque stated the Vis deal was done in principle over a week before the deadline.

  28. 29 mins for PK Subban tonight. Most of any player on either team.

  29. WG,

I got the same read on the Lubo deal too. Some comment fr Tambo that they had been working on the deal for weeks.

  30. P.K Subban is going to be a fine young defender for years to come.

Crosby went bananas after the game, chasing after Gorges.

  31. spOILer:

I'm not sure with Peckham. I think he has to clear waivers because I think he was a 20 year old, by CBA definition in the waiver section, when he signed, but I could well be mistaken. If he was 19 it appears he doesn't have to clear waivers next season.

    ReplyDelete
  32. On an unrelated note, I think Smyth's injury at the WHC means Eberle, the 13th forward, should get into the lineup.

    ReplyDelete
  33. speeds,

He can't be considered an age 18 player the year he was drafted and then an age 20 player the next spring.

And the CBA is pretty clear in Article 13... He was age 19 when he signed and thus is waiver exempt this coming season.

    ReplyDelete
  34. spOILer:

  35. //Are you sure Peckham would have to clear waivers?

My reading of the CBA, page 67, is that he counts as a 20 year old signing, and thus is waiver eligible this year.

"age 20 means a Player reaching his 20th birthday in the calendar year of the Entry Draft".

  36. Some evidence supporting my position is Lashoff having to clear waivers this season.

He was drafted in 2005, signed in 2006, but had to clear waivers to start this season according to the following links:

    http://fantasygolf.usatoday.com/content/player.asp?sport=NHL&id=1865

    http://www.rawcharge.com/2009/9/29/1060466/mike-lundin-waived

Lashoff was born Sept 29, 1986,in the same Sept 16-Dec 31 "old 18 year old draftee" window as Peckham (born November 10, 1987). This allowed both players to play in the AHL one year post draft unlike "young 18 year old draftees", players like Eberle who turn 18 from Jan 1 - Sept 15 of their first-eligible draft year, unlike players like Lashoff and Peckham who are already 18 when the calendar year of their first-eligible draft begins.

    ReplyDelete
  37. All I can tell you is that Peckham is not listed in the 2005 CSB rankings (that I can find and I have them).

A guy like Cody Wild was eligible although drafted a year later, so my guess is that Pechkam's 17-year old season (according to csb) was 2005-06.

    ReplyDelete
  38. I doubt anyone is going to pick up Peckham anyway.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Peter,
Since Eberle was an alternate he can't be inserted into the WC lineup until after the round robin. Silly International rules.

  40. spOILer: I take Thomas's comments with a grain of salt when he says things like Hall is holding his team back...obviously this is from a few weeks back, but how wrong does that look after Windsor's playoff record?

fpv: I would be willing to bet real money Theo Peckham would get picked up if he was waived. Are you game?

    ReplyDelete
  41. Hoil: Case to case. Someone might be even more in trouble with 5 D's out and pick up Peckham.

But since it's waivers we should make a special bet.

Like you win if he gets picked up, but doesn't re-enter waivers in the same year because he was an emergency pickup.

    ReplyDelete
  42. fpv: I would be willing to bet real money Theo Peckham would get picked up if he was waived. Are you game?

You'd have to ask his mom. Then again, do you really want to take a kid's allowance?

  43. Not that it completely fills the void, but doesn't first pick off waivers in pre-season help the bottom end D?

Anyone better than Peckham needing to clear gets us an insta-upgrade.
