One of the things Oilers fans are waiting for this spring is official word on college defenseman Jeff Petry. Rumor has it the young Michigan State star may turn pro although the usual sources are waiting along with the rest of us.
Petry has been the subject of glowing reviews from the Oilers management group over the last while and he might be able to help the big club right away (giving Taylor Chorney a rest might be a plan). Should Petry decide to stay another year in college, we'll need to discuss signability and the possibility of trade.
We wait.
I've been eagerly anticipating Petry turning pro for some time. Hopefully he learns to cover up his defensive deficiencies more quickly than Chorney.
ReplyDeleteChorney's a defenseman?
ReplyDeleteTwo more points for the Leaves tonight.
ReplyDeletekris: too funny, although - maybe the Oilers organization never really told him...hmmm
ReplyDeletebased soley on what aweful shape the team appears to be in right now, I predict the following:
ReplyDeleteThe Oilers brass don't try to make this team any better in the offseason, and try to get another lottery pick in 10-11.
Petry will go pro and be a reasonably good defenseman on a reasonably good team in OKC. He will not see time with the Oilers.
Chorney will be signed to play with Strudwick for one year, and both will be aweful.
The Oilers dismiss Khabbi, and run with JD&DD and see who becomes their future goalie.
Katz will be surprised when there are riots after Mandel wins a 3rd term and says he supports the Baccarat Site Arena Plan.
Thanks psyche,
ReplyDeleteIn all seriousness, count me in as thinking he's better off if he converts to forward. He's got the speed and some offensive chops. The problem is that he doesn't show that much "hockey sense" so it might not be reasonable to expect him to learn the game anew.
It'd be nice to get him signed and give him a year to develop at the professional level.
ReplyDeleteHe's no spring chicken, and before you know it, he'll be a UFA.
MPS with an assist today. That's 30 points in 50 games.
off topic but i thought Whitney's comments on the zoilers site were pretty interesting. wish the title was Tough Times Harumph!
ReplyDeletewhat are these players doing? who? not surprised but this is a hint at something larger i would imagine.
first guess is o'noerikcole
Chorney to forward? Another midget!
ReplyDeleteIt's going to have a decidedly strange sound to hear Rod Phillips saying "Petry dishes a pass...". And gawd forbid what Gene Principe does with that.
ReplyDeleteCue the references to team culture...
