Falcon Crest (Blue)













At some point the kids on the farm have to be better than they were in the early stages of the 08-09 season. Taylor Chorney (#4 in photo) was so bad that it bordered on hilarious when the Oilers media machine started churning out quotes from management about how well he was doing in Springfield. Remember this was a guy who looked good in TC and there was some talk about him making the big club at some point early in the 08-09 season. We know now that for much of the first half of the schedule Chorney was facing the AHL vaunt and it was killing his numbers. We also know that the heavy lifting was moved along the blue and Chorney's numbers have improved since.

A lot.

Here are the Falcons D and their numbers since January 1, 2009:


  • Mathieu Roy 17gp, 1-7-8 -12
  • Theo Peckham 14gp, 2-3-5 -4
  • Taylor Chorney 13gp, 2-2-4 E
  • Mike Gabinet 17gp, 1-3-4 +1
  • Bryan Young 17gp, 0-3-3 -3
  • Cody Wild 12gp, 0-1-1 -8
  • Jake Taylor 11gp, 0-0-0 -3
  • Sebastien Bisaillon 1gp, 0-0-0 +1

One assumes the tough sledding is going to Roy & Peckham during this time, possibly Taylor too. With that in mind, I'd suggest Theo Peckham remains the first callup option and that Taylor Chorney is finding the range at this time. Cody Wild is struggling and Mathieu Roy is a minus machine.

    Let's just get silly here and bring up Bisaillon. He did just fine when we were down to our 11th Dman a few years back, he's a puck mover, and he's clearly not getting any playing time down on the farm Development by fire has always worked in the past right?

    Ok, in all seriousness, I am not that impressed with what I have seen out of Peckham in the couple games he's been in so far, Chorney's not ready and Wild is something of an enigma. I have nothing worth a legitimate discussion because I don't think we have anybody that is ready to consistently jump in and help at the NHL level for a few weeks. I actually really think Young might be the best bet at this point, which shows how grim the post 37-71 world really is. At least Plekanic got a 2-game unpaid vacation for taking out our poor defenseless acid eater...

    Great post, LT. Adds a lot of perspective, especially since guys like me sometimes get blinded by the numbers on the season.

    Shepso: Except of course that Young's largely played 3rd pairing minutes.

    JW: Yeah, I know...that's kind of my point. I think I'm getting the fear. I really have no clue as to how any of the farm kids are going to respond to a long term call up, and the last thing I really want to see is something like Smacintyre playing D, something I know he's done in the past, though not well. Peckham is the logical choice, but I still don't like it.

    This is where no Allan Rourke is a real shame. I'd throw him with Strudwick and get 15 servicable minutes.

    This year's Rourke is supposed to be Jake Taylor (or Roy) but it doesn't look like this year's model is much good.

    Also, I'd be interested in seeing if they just flipped Chorney for Wild on the tough minutes.

    Crazy year.

    Does anyone know WHY Roy sucks this year? I mean, no one complained too loudly when he got his 1-way. He seemed to be decent as an 8th dman but have the luck of Charlie Brown.

    i think because he was a crash test dummy for multiple years and now probably speaks with a huge drooling drawl and can't count to four.

    mush, and not that good stuff timmy wants more of...the bad mush. like refugee camp mush...like add sand for flavour type mush.

    i've never seen someone get nailed so hard so frequently in limited minutes. that would be a great stat: most hits taken per 60 min...MHT/60, he'd be up there with a headpin.

    Funny you should say that, because I thought this year's Rourke was Jason Strudwick. I guess I'm off base here.

    Supposedly, Taylor Chorney and Rob Schremp go out for drinks together and talk about how awesome it is getting results against crappy minor-league players despite being high draft picks.
