G37 Oilers at Islanders

The New York Islanders of the Torrey-Arbour era were formidable. Quality, depth, skill and a massive mean streak, the club had impact players who were complemented by a large group of role players. Although Bill Torrey didn't invent the trade deadline, he famously used it to put his team over the top in 1980.

It didn't take a long time for the Islanders to win. Their first draft picks (expansion and amateur) came in 1972 and they won their first Stanley in 1980. Nine seasons. It'll be six seasons since 2006 summer for the Oilers at the end of this campaign.

Islanders had 12 wins in their first season and 19 the next--that was the season they hired Al Arbour. 33 wins in year three and then 42, 47, 48, 51 and then 39 in the season the Islanders won their first Stanley.

Bill Torrey, Al Arbour and a bunch of hockey men with names like Gerry Ehman and Earl Ingarfield quickly became one of the "have" teams at the draft table during the 1970s. Montreal, Boston, Toronto, Buffalo, Philadelphia and the Islanders had better scouting and there was no central scouting bureau at the time.
  • 1972: Billy Harris, Bob Nystrom, Garry Howatt, Lorne Henning, Richard Brodeur
  • 1973: Denis Potvin, Dave Lewis, Bob Lorimer, Lorne Henning
  • 1974: Bryan Trottier, Clark Gillies, Dave Langevin, Stefan Persson
Plus they were always buying a Chico Resch here or trading two old bolts for Bob Bourne. They collected talent and inserted said talent when ready. Some of those kids came right to the NHL, and others--mostly defensemen--came along a few years after they were drafted. The universal draft made eligible 20-year old kids through 1973 and the 1974 draft allowed one underager per team (said player had to be drafted in round one or two, Trottier was the Isles choice).
The key elements to the success of the Islanders came from Oakland, Charles Finley and the broken down Seals. Brad Kurtzberg wrote a book on the Seals called (aptly) Shorthanded, and it includes this item on Torrey's dealings with the Seals owner:

Bill Torrey and the people he knew built a dynasty on Long Island, but it could just as easily have been put together in Oakland. Does anyone seriously believe Bill Torrey--the man who walked the streets of Montreal for an hour before the 1973 draft with Sam Pollock alongside trying to talk him out of Denis Potvin--would have traded the pick that became Guy Lafleur?

Both the Oilers and Islanders are drafting well, both have outstanding prospects in all areas of their farm system and a few at the NHL level. The key comes in taking those talents and marrying them to veteran players who can help them develop and win by mentoring them.

In a very real way, we don't have to wonder about Steve Tambellini and Garth Snow, we already have the answer. Islander and Oiler fans are waiting on the ownership to move on to the next phase. In Edmonton, I believe Stu MacGregor has done a fine job--it's on display in Edmonton with the Oilers, in Calgary and Edmonton at the WJ's, in Medicine Hat with the Tigers and in OKC.

The Oilers have their lottery talents, it's the Chico Resch's and Eddie Westfall's they need to add, their Gerry Hart's and Billy Smith's.

Steve Tambellini believes the Oilers have the pieces in place to make a playoff run. That isn't the question I'm asking. The question is what does Daryl Katz believe? How long is he willing to watch his lottery kids play for a team that's driving in the ditch?
We wait.

Nation Radio's New Year's eve show hits Team 1260 at noon today. You can email questions to nationradio@theteam1260.com or drop them off here in the comments section. You can also check @itsnationradio or @lowetide_ on twitter and I welcome your questions and comments.
  • Jonathan Willis will be on the show for the entire first hour. Jon has a mountain of information on the world juniors, advanced stats as they pertain to this year's edition of the Oilers and the NHL in general.
  • Scott Taylor from Jets Nation. There's a story brewing here and it involves Winnipeg pushing Toronto out of the playoffs. Scott will give us the Jets view and we'll talk WJ's.
  • Pension Plan Puppets have several smart people who monitor the Leafs and one of them will join me today. We'll talk about the rocky relationship the fanbase has with their goalies and also discuss the importance of the numbers 18-14-5.
Hope you can tune in. We'll also be discussing cool ways to bring in the New Year, so pass along your suggestions.

  1. Finally LT, what took you so long this morning? A few too many bevies watching the States get beat?

  2. I'm old, if I'm going to stay up late tonight it had to be a 'sleep in' morning. :-)

  3. Torrey said the two key moves for that put the Isles over the top were:

    1) Drafting Potvin
    2) Trading for Goring.

If there were a Butch Goring on the Oilers v3.2 would trade him for a draft pick and a DMan who is 6th on an AHL depth chart.

The Edmonton MSM would shit talk Goring out the door and fans would boo him when he returned to EDM with his new team.

Speaking of bad GM's and sycophants in the MSM, this is a great post over at JS&BM

    Great stuff there.

There were three "winnable" games on this 7 game trip.

    One was MIN.

    Another was this game.

The last is the DAL game.

I hope Sutton returning can shore up the D a bit. I'd guess Renney will run him out with Potter on the 2nd pairing.

Hemsky looked like Hesmky in the last half of the MIN game, if he plays like that again, the Oilers will have 2 lines that are fun to watch today.

    Hopefully DD starts.

Oilers traditionally suck at afternoon games. I hope that doesn't hold true today.

    Go Oilers!

  4. Willis had an interesting tweet yesterday about the politics that kept Mrazek out of the WJC last year. I asked a follow up and he said it was basically extortion or pay for play. Can you ask if there is any more information?

  5. I'm on the ugly side of a night shift, but the next two days off means I'm pushing through to enjoy the game muted with Oilers Nation on blast. LT, have a great show & a happy 2012 to all! Goilers!

  6. Bring the real Goring out of retirement, I want to see that helmet he wore again. A snippet from the Manitoba Sports Hall website.

"His dad, Bob, still recalls the day he got that strange looking Snaps helmet in 1961. The thing was so comfortable, Goring never took it off until he retired in 1985"

  7. I like the reference to the mean streak on the NYI of that era. Gilles and Tonelli were tough SOB's (as was Hart and Potvin).

The guys w/a mean streak on this team can barely play.

You asked what does Katz think? My sense is that he's being patient because we're in "year 2" of the rebuild and he's not going grow impatient w/the architects of the rebuild at this juncture because it would be an even bigger admission of failure.

Ducey put up some interesting numbers in yesterday's thread. While the W-L is dubious at this point of the season, the team is playing more competitively to this point of the season. With a 3-9 record in 1 goal games you see we're in more games.

But the back end is a mess and I'd suggest goaltending might be further muddled given that 35 is playing better...meaning Renney has not played 40 nearly as much as was intimated over the summer.

  15. Eager's gritty toughness absolutely kills a great start by the Oilers.

    FFS.

Shitty non-call on Hamonic rubbing out Hall when he never touched the puck.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Don't worry WG. I'm sure 16 or 55 will take care of Hamonic. They really seem to understand their roles.

    ReplyDelete

  18. Good for Sam. Rewarded for going to the tough areas.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Louie says "Mosh pit in front of the net"!! Good one!

    ReplyDelete
  20. What absolutely kills me when watching this team isn't necessarily how often our guys get drilled with big checks, that's just part of the game. It's when a skill guy from the other team, like Tavares, is in a position to get absolutely plastered behind the net...and Belanger totally lets him off the hook

    ReplyDelete
  21. That should be a NYI goal, as ugly as it is.

    ReplyDelete
  26. I guess, it just seems like some bad bounces so far.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Cheating way too much? His job there was to hold the post. Moulson should have had a man on him.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Nice to see Lunchpail Sammy with a digit by his name.

Everyone else catch Oil Change last night? I thought Gagners philosophy of playing through injuries was pretty cool.

Khabibulin - "I don't know how many years I have left, so I might as well have fun with it."

    Years? Oh boy.

  31. No defense in this game. Lot's of odd man rushes.

    ReplyDelete
  32. This game has all the defensive acumen of a split squad game.

    Did everyone take the over?

Hemsky needs the same thing on his line that he's needed forever...a shooter.

    Hall is flying again.

Sutton should be forbidden from ever pinching.

  33. Lottery Team hockey. Should be used to it by now but it's frustrating as ever. Think I'll go do something useful.

    ReplyDelete
  34. A bit off topic, but it's a follow-up to a question I posted the other day. I'm new here, but would love a response from some of you.

I'm worried if we lose Omark to Sweden and Hemsky to trade/UFA, Eberle will become the only reasonable RW for other teams to key in on. This seems similar to the period of time when both Stoll and Reasoner left the Oilers, leaving Horcoff to do all the heavy lifting at the centre position. To my eye, Horcoff hasn't been the same player since Stoll and Reasoner left.

Is it fair that regardless of what we think of Hemsky (which seems to range from "submlime talent" vs. "uninterested second liner"), can we at least agree that keeping Hemsky would be good for Eberle's continued development?

For what it's worth, I'm on the re-sign Hemsky bus.

    ReplyDelete
  35. I think they're trying the Capitals method now. If you can't stop the other team from scoring you have to score more than them. Everyone in! RobVanDam must be loving this.

    ReplyDelete
  36. I can't decide if Susan from the Boston Pizza wing ads is a "Nib" or a "Nub".

    ReplyDelete
  37. Peeps,

23 will be in the NHL not Sweden. He's stated as much. Might not be with the Oilers.

I'd like to the the RW chart as:

    83
    14
    23
    56/28

Tambellini has said 56 has top 6 potential so if they get rid of both 23 and 83 it might look like:

    14
    56
    28
    37

Losing both 83 and 23 would be insane, so I expect it to happen.

    ReplyDelete
  40. Eager and Dubnyk are brutal tonight.

I honestly have no idea why Renney plays Eager/Hordichuk as often as he does.

    Dubnyk is just bad tonight.

    ReplyDelete
  41. It's one thing to lose bad to a good team, but to the freaking Islanders?

There are no excuses for this - players or coach.

    ReplyDelete
  42. I'm surprised Doobie didn't get snuffed out too after those two weak ones.

    ReplyDelete
  43. How many times have we seen stay-at-home Dman Sutton deep in the Ozone this game?

    ReplyDelete
  44. Renney is horrible at knowing when to hook the goalie.

    ReplyDelete
  46. Pretty important game as far as draft position goes, so are we really losing¿

    ReplyDelete
  47. I was thinking the same thing dooz. How sad is it that it's Dec 31st and we are (for many years in a row) paying attention to the draft eligible prospects more closely than the NHL standings.

    Sigh.

    ReplyDelete
  48. These are the important games... good on them for tanking the game in search of a top 3 pick. Management must be proud.

    ReplyDelete
  49. It's not as ugly when you listen on 630 CHED.

    ReplyDelete
  53. can someone give me one good reason why renney shouldnt be fired? how could things get any worse?

oil melted down today against one of the leagues worst franchises.

    ReplyDelete
  54. Dennis,

Are you sure? I mean all Renney has done is HS one of his best PKers so Hordichuk can play 4 and a half minutes, and start his back-up in a game against a weak team when we need a win to break a losing streak.

Surely will win the special team battles and the goaltending battles this way?

He did continue to give Eager shifts when he's obviously suffering from a bad case of stupiditis and we're missing said PKer, but what could be wrong with that?

    ReplyDelete
  55. HG10

Thanks, bud. I checked TSN2 earlier but didn't see it.

    ReplyDelete
  56. By what metric(s) is Pettrell one of our best PKers?

It's fallacious to assume that just because a player is useless in one facet of the game, he must be useful in others.

    ReplyDelete
  57. "Steve":

Thanks for supplying my reasoning for me; what would I do without you?

He's an eminently better PKer than Hordichuk or Eager, his replacements, and couldn't do much worse than what we've seen on the PK tonight.

    ReplyDelete
  58. Actually, I just noticed that Petrell's got the worst PKSV% of PKing forward, so I may be dinging him unfairly (I initially took note of his PDO being really high, but PDO's not a terribly useful measure on special teams given the low sample size of shots in one direction). But he's also scored against at a fierce rate.

    ReplyDelete
  59. Thanks for supplying my reasoning for me; what would I do without you?

I never said that was your reasoning: I'm very fond of non sequitur, and haven't ever seen a zebra in person.

Anyway, "much better than Eager and Hordichuk" is not the same as "one of the best on the team". But you knew that.

    ReplyDelete
  60. Hence the rest of that statement, and perhaps you should look up non sequitur, although I presume you knew that too.

    ReplyDelete
  61. Am getting little tired of Jack Michaels saying that it's all about luck. Yeah, Hall has hit 2 posts and a crossbar, but they didn't move them in just before he shot the puck.

Oilers have not deserved to win this game and that's why they're down 4-1 to a team that's obviously not as bad as they are.

    ReplyDelete
  62. I dont think the Islanders have done that well drafting. On their top line only tavares was drafted by the organization. Nino? Meh, hes got less points then PRV.

From where they have been drafting the past five years, they should have better players.

    ReplyDelete
  63. Jonesy might not be showing off his dance moves in Times Square tonight.

    ReplyDelete
  64. Woodgguy: thanks for your feedback about the RW depth status moving forward.

Maybe the Oilers think Sam Gagner won't pan out as a centre, but could play RW? That's still nowhere near as good as having Hemsky though.

To everyone: have a happy New Year. Thanks for helping make following the Oilers a more interesting & slightly-less-painful experience.

    ReplyDelete
  65. At what point does this performance become unacceptable to the fanbase? I fail to see why management will change anything when people keep spending money to watch this shit.

Its coming to a head for for me, i simply cannot endure another year of shit hockey. Tomorrow is january 1st, a new year. Its the perfect time to make the declaration that i will be done watching this team after the next calender year unless something is changed.

What players will want to play for a shit franchise that relies on tanking to acquire talent? Why on earth would players like Hall, Eberle, RNH etc even want to be part of this long term? This organization stinks and everyone knows it.

At this point i want a complete gutting of the front office and coaching staff. Its a fucking embarrassment. Sorry for the rant but I fail to see how things are any better than the franchise's "low point" of the early 90s. This is the nadir of what has become the Laughing stock of the league.

Wake up people! Stop paying for this inferior product!

Things sure are looking up for the future though....what a joke

    ReplyDelete
  66. Jack Michaels is awful... he feels the need to exaggerate and at times 'make shit up' in order to pretend the game is better/closer than it really is.

And he is even worse when a fight breaks out... I've listened to him call a fight thinking it was a great balanced scrap and been alarmed at how badly the Oiler was beaten down after viewing it on video.

Can't trust anything he says during a radio broadcast.

    ReplyDelete
  67. I was going to see the Oilers game here in Chicago on Monday night, but with that effort, why bother wasting $80 per on tickets.

I can watch them get slaughtered on TV instead.

I think it's time to start thinking about changing up the coaching staff.

    ReplyDelete
  68. Itsaleaf said:

"...Its the perfect time to make the declaration that i will be done watching this team after the next calender year unless something is changed."

Don't worry... there WILL be changes next year. We'll be without one (or both) of Hemsky or Gagner, more weight will be loaded onto the shoulders of the kids, and some irrelevant plug players will be replaced by others.

The only hope I really have is that Khabibulin will be entering a contract year. That always works, right? Right?!

    Year Save %
    2000-01 0.913
    2001-02 0.92
    2002-03 0.911

Oh... that only works when he's on a young team that's putrid in year 1, and getting steadily better by adding talented players through BOTH drafting and free agency / trading... nevermind.

  70. Ken Hitchcock was available. Blues have played about .700 hockey since he took over.

Renney has lost me as well. This team has issues, but Renney isn't getting enough out of them IMO.

I'm getting more enjoyment out of the Flyers/Rangers alumni game.

F'in Kevin Hatcher - That brings back some bad memories

  71. I think he was already out of Finland's line up lol, but I catch your drift. And not good news.

    ReplyDelete
  72. Musil - Not surprising - he obviously got his bell rung yesterday - was disappointed they sent him back out there.

Oh Joy - more injury issues for Oiler prospects.

Jets are a fun team to watch, fans are great to. I enjoy Noel's interviews after the game - no BS. Gonna give more of my hockey attention to them and less to this sad franchise in 2012.

  73. Man the ice at Rexall looks terrible for the Fin - Czech game. There's so much snow on the ice - They may as well play street hockey on Gretzky Drive. Embarassing

    ReplyDelete
  74. I understand the appeal of a Hordichuk-Eager 4th line, what's not to like about a couple of bangers who can really wear down the opposition? Problem is, that's not what happens. I've been against Eager from the start so maybe I'm biased, but I haven't seen much of these two guys running around bruising the bad guys' defence. The modern NHL bash-brothers wouldn't be Kocur and Probert, you'd want Tootoo and Clutterbuck. Fighting isn't the same thing as hitting- maybe he's still hurt but Eager has not come as advertised.

That said, obviously this game is not on the fourth line. A healthy Omark subbing in for Eager might be a deck-chair, but details add up.

  77. Just read the JSBM piece on Hemsky.
It's a damn shame that a Matheson or Jones - ie. not one of the MSM punks - doesn't put something like that out there, throw down the gauntlet for the wannabes in the papers and the front office. Just write a nice long shit-bomb like that one, and set it on fire on the front page. Why the hell not?

    ReplyDelete
  78. I can't even muster the energy to criticize the organization anymore. If Katz is sanctioning this direction and the ensuing results there isn't much to do other than sit back and watch.

I was all for trading Hemsky earlier for help at the D position but we're not going to get an established NHL D man for him so I hope they can agree on a 1 year deal-to quote our host picks and prospects is madness.

    ReplyDelete
  79. Alice,

The two Hall of Fame reporters that you refer to are much, much more likey to set fire to any Oiler on the way out of town than ever question management.

They have in the past, they will in the future.

LT, you picked a great game to miss with the radio show.

Awful and putrid come to mind in describing it.

The Oilers were actually carrying the play both times that Eager got his idiotic penalties that resulted on NYI goals.

They did get him to help change momentum in games I guess.

I was for the Eager signing initially as he has shown he can play a little hockey in the past, but he hasn't shown it here at all. Didn't realize that the 55 on his jersey indicated his IQ as well.

Has shown no clue this year.

    1st year of a 3 year deal.

    Oy.

Eager has played for 5 different teams in 6 years.

    There's a reason for that.

  84. What I liked was how both Eager and Hordichuk went after Martin when he hit Smid not only cleanly but even respectfully. He really could have lit Ladi up, but didn't.

  85. I only wanted a playoff semi-contender by New Year's Eve...instead that wanker ~Tambellini has given me another winter of discontent.

    Dang.

Eventually Katz is going to realise the incredible resource of the Oilogosphere or whatever the fuck it's called.

Looks like Renney's going to be promoted come July, cus he sure as shooting isn't going to still be managing the team.

How many times have the Oilers made the playoffs during the reign of Kevin Lowe?

    ReplyDelete
  87. So 2011 is done.

To LT and the commenters on this site:

Thank you for another great year of insight, humour, venting, pretty ladies, etc. Basically a welcome daily ray of sunshine here in hockey equivelant of mudville.

    To Oilers management dream team:

    F@CK OFF!

You iced a squad that gave us what - 9 games total worth remembering in the last trip around the sun? I too bought into the slow and proper re-build, but really. Untrained monkeys could also consistently peal off last place finishes. Let me be the first to call UNCLE, and ask - what part of the slow and proper re-build comes next? I know, wait for the next Oil Change to piece together the hidden 'clues'. Surely the monkeys would be more entertaining.

    To the owner (aka Batman):

Wherever you are holed up tonight, think about us. Winter's are long and cold here sir. You remember, don't you? Good hockey? Demand more from those you are paying good money to manage your assets - they are YOUR assets. Before the kids have rights and decide to leave, give us a sign, signal, written communique, legal notice, anything as to what you expect from your team moving forward, other than as a chip to winning an arena deal. Tell us, does your team winning matter to you? If so, it's not apparent.

That felt better. Now onward to 2012 and another year of hope - but first a night of drinkin' and forgettin'.

    Cheers!

They help you lose hockey games.

Yep. Those 4th liners are so damned important in the grand scheme of things huh? The sack of shit top 6/9 we ice every night couldn/t be the issue. Nooooo.

Any players not named Hall, Eberle, RNH, Smid, or Gilbert should be considered trade fodder, but it's such a motley collection it won't garner fack all.

word ver: undlowe...really?...Undlowe we're not going anywhere

  92. Sweden hasn't given up a goal with the Klefa on the ice. The two Martins with one each over Swiss.

  93. Magnus Paajarvi still has no goals in the AHL since being demoted!

  94. Think MPS should call up Crosby's folks and ask to borrow that clothes dryer for a few weeks, get him on track.

Seeing as the Oilers were carrying the play when 55 got his first penalty, and then were carrying it again when he got his 2nd, I'd say that yes, 4th liners can be pretty important.

  96. Hemsky only gets assists and most everyone thinks that is fine'n'dandy. Sign him again. Give him multimillions for multi years. He's scored 20 goals exactly how many times? His best power play ever, ranked what 14th in the league?

Basically the same players as last year, and minus Whitney, and Nugent-Hopkins has the power play in the top 5.

Paajarvi gets assists and people think he's a bum.

4 assists in 6 games. After an adjustment period after just being sent down, he's going at a point-a-game.

Glass half full? Glass half empty?

Grand scheme of things says they don't have much impact WG but I suspect you know that already. If they were to become a factor that would tend to say a lot about the coaching I'd think.

When all you can muster against a pretty weak team is a goal bounced in off the ass of someone who can only really score that way the 4th line isn't your bigest issue.

This teams top 9 is one of if not THE weakest in the league. Toss in a patchwork D and hit or miss goaltending most nights and its really no surprise we are where we are in the standings.

If 94-10 are our 3rd line LW and C next year, and he's added a decent goaltender and two decent D we can say ST actually did something right for a change. Thats what this team needs imo.

Shouldn't be too hard securing a solid #2 line during the offseason should it?
