Entering this NHL season, Jones had scored 33 NHL goals on 251 shots. That's 13.5 per cent, which is an excellent total. Not Craig Simpson, but 13.5 would keep you in the league a long time. This year, Jones is shooting at 22.5%, which would rank him in the top 170 seasons of all-time (he is tied for 162nd this morning). Jones is a mature player (27) but we don't have seven seasons to look back on as evidence of his shooting ability. His college numbers were very good and he's finding the range in the NHL, pushing his totals higher.
Is Ryan Jones on track for a 30-goal season? His 22.5% shooting percentage says no. However, his underlying numbers--the same numbers that told us a year ago he had extreme luck on his side and to be wary of his future--show him to be winning the day despite a horrific zone start (38.3% OFF) and playing with the Dixie Dregs.

Young Gagner is slowly but surely climbing out of the early season hole that had Oiler fans wondering what went wrong. Samwise is now at the outer edge of the offensive forwards in 5x5/60.
- Ryan Smyth 3.49
- Jordan Eberle 3.38
- Ryan Nugent-Hopkins 2.44
- Ales Hemsky 2.35
- Ryan Jones 2.30
- Taylor Hall 2.10
- Shawn Horcoff 1.80
- Sam Gagner 1.29

Last night's win was important for clearance. Should the Oilers beat the Flames tonight--certainly possible but not a certainty--they would enjoy a 9-point cushion on the Pine Island Lodge for the Aged. Although the Iginla's would have two games in hand, that's still a nice gap.
I don't think this team makes the playoffs, they're bleeding too many losses that should be wins. However, I also think that my summer prediction (13th in the west) will miss the mark based on their quality of play almost 30 games into the year. 10th in the conference? Seems reasonable.
--
During the reasonable expectations series, I had the Oilers scoring 223 goals and allowing 247. Currently, they are 73-66 (average NHL team is 68-68). Can they sustain it? If the Oilers continue at their goal scoring rate, they'll end up around 230 goals and their GA would be 208.

Nation Radio is on the air again this afternoon noon to 2 Edmonton time (Team 1260, click on the icon). I read questions from this blog, Oilers Nation, twitter (ItsNationRadio and Lowetide_) and you can also email nationradio@theteam1260.com if you'd like. Best questions are from you.
- Jason Gregor host of the Jason Gregor Show each weekday afternoon on Team 1260. Jason had some interesting takes this week--especially on Ales Hemsky--and we'll talk about that plus the importance of tonight's HNIC BOA.
- Kent Wilson will be by to tell us the name of the basement underwear blogger that caused Jay Feaster's gaunch to get tied in such a big knot. Kent will also tell us just how good Blake Comeau is and we'll argue over tonight's game.
- Dean Belanger from Jets Nation. Dean will discuss the emerging Evander Kane, how the Jets are winning these games (close and not so close) and give us an overview on the state of Canada's newest NHL team.
- Thomas Drance from Canucks Army. I want some answers on the Bobby Luongo item, it seems crazy to trade either goalie with the billion dollar man looking wobbly. I'll ask about Burrows, Raymond, injuries and waking up from the Stanley run sleep.

Jones actually has 9 goals.
ReplyDeleteFrom Elias: "Ryan Jones, who had never scored more than one goal in 201 career games entering Friday, scored three times in the third period of the Oilers' 6-3 home win over the Blue Jackets. No other player in NHL history who had failed to light the lamp more than once in any of his first 200 career contests ever scored three or more goals in a period of his first multi-goal game."
ReplyDeleteLT, I hear what you're saying about this team not making the playoffs. I think they'll pull it off though.
ReplyDelete8 goals... Well that's proof of LT's hate for Jones if nothing is.
ReplyDeleteLT, at some point in time the Oil are going to stop dropping most of the games they should win, and that could come during this season.
To me 10th means 1 or 2 points out of 8th, based on post-Bettman point playoff races, which means 8th virtually has the same probabilty. 1 win/loss different.
That first line should have an lol after it, just kiddin.
ReplyDeletespOILer: Maybe. They've punted some dear points lately, it's very frustrating to watch.
ReplyDeleteI do think getting Dubnyk back into the rotation is important. He played a lot of pucks well last night, but there were some 10 bell chances off rebounds (and at least one goal I can think of).
He's too rusty in the current rotation.
Jones shooting percentage is 100% when there is no goalie in the net. That can't be sustainable! His S% is 16.2 with a goalie in net, so based on career average he should have 5 goals, so we're not far off the mark.
ReplyDeleteAbsolutely agreed on Dubnyk.
ReplyDeleteBut isn't inconsistency our reasonable expectation for this team as a whole? I don't find it frustrating so much as confirming. I will enjoy watching them trying to play their way out of that issue, like last night.
Seeing Hemsky do the things he did last night was something. He plays like that game in and out and this could very well be a playoff team.
spOILer: Yeah, I think Hemsky's third period got lost a little in all the goals but he really played with purpose. That one hit was dynamite.
ReplyDeleteHey LT, could you ask Kent if thinks the Flames would even entertain the idea of making another trade with the Oilers? I think if we were teams in opposite conferences, in some ways, we may look at each other as teams who have excess of what the other team needs.
ReplyDeleteI'm not even sure how I feel about the Oilers making deals with the Flames.
It's weird, when I think of shooting percentage, I think of shooting the puck. How many goals does Jones score where he actually has to have some amazing shot skills? Not many, I'm thinking.
ReplyDeleteI don't know how sustainable his pace is either but I know I'm cheering for Bad Ryan to keep it going.
How about that powerplay. Watching Eberle weave his way to open areas for a shot is a dream come true. How many years was I yelling at them to MOVE!? He makes it looks so easy.
Who would you want from the Flames? I'm not really seeing much there. Unless they want to give up Sven Bärtschi..Yea, not likely.
ReplyDeleteHah, Ribs, great point. It was never about "shoot!" for me either, but "move your effin feet!"
ReplyDeleteYou know, I'd offer to do Feaster a favor and take Boumeester's deal off his hands for cheap.
ReplyDeleteYeah, it's 1-1.5 million heavy cap-hit wise, but there's only two years left on it after this one (i.e. expires just in time that we're going to have to pay RNH), and adding a top-pairing d-man to what the Oil currently have going at forward would be significant.
Lowetide: could you ask Kent about what he's thought about J-Bo's play this year and if what's actually happening on the ice lines up with Flame-fan's opinion of the guy (overrated, soft, free-agent disaster are all terms I've heard associated with him)? Thanks.
spOILer: Yeah, I think Hemsky's third period got lost a little in all the goals but he really played with purpose. That one hit was dynamite.
ReplyDeleteBoth Nikitin and Tyutin were beating up on 83 in the first 2 periods and he started to push back in the 3rd.
Very nice to see.
It looked like Hemsky was pissed off for the whole 3rd period.
Oilers should hire someone to rough him up during the pre-game skate.
I went to bed before the third period, thinking the Oilers were going to lose another one. I checked the score when I woke up and immediately regretted my decision. I guess that's the curse of following a western team while living on the east coast. But I made the decision to make the Oilers my favorite team when I was only 5, and there were a few Stanley Cups in those early years. So I shouldn't complain too much.
ReplyDeleteIf you trade for J-Bo, you take away any chance of getting Suter or Weber when they become UFA's.
ReplyDeleteNo thanks.
Don't short-circuit the rebuild looking for a quick expensive fix to a hole.
If you build it, the elite UFA defensemen will come
I'm kinda interested in Bourque or Iginla. Kent seems to think both should be dealt.
ReplyDeleteflamesnation.ca/2011/12/1/quaretr-pole-thoughts
"Whatever the teams plans - be it rebuild, re-tool, status quo...Bourque needs to go. He's a detriment on the ice and his contract is going to be exposed as an albatross very soon."
Rene Bourque intrigues me. I know many of Bourque's numbers are poor this year but I'm interested in a review about some specific parts of his game: Does he fight much? Can he fight well? Does he get involved in scrums? Does he take stupid penalties much? Does he back check? Does he finish his hits?
Agreed with Ribs, Jones' shots often don't involve actually trying to "beat" a goalie in a straight shooter-vs-goalie matchup. He either has an easy empty shot (and credit to him, he has a level enough head to just put it in), or he's shooting through two or three sets of skates (including the lost goalie) and its merely a case of how good he is at pinball.
ReplyDeleteAn opportunist, plain and simple, and it appears a damn good one. Nothing wrong with that. Opportunists, if that were a quantifiable thing, should have consistently higher shooting% than a shoot from anywhere type. Ovechkin's shot, for example, is so good it is worthwhile for him to shoot from anywhere. Jones, not so much.
The Oilers likely won't make the playoffs because they will lose more than the average number of OT games, because Khabibulin can't stop a puck in shootouts.
ReplyDeleteSo they will lose those three to five points they need to go from 11th to 8th.
Except of course for his breakaway goals (which are him vs goalie obviously). He just seems pretty good at those too.
ReplyDelete@LT,
ReplyDeleteLove that line about "the Pine Island Lodge for the Aged". Gold ! Pure Cold !
Gold, not cold. Gold damn it !
ReplyDelete@PIC,
ReplyDeleteAll you need to know about Bourque's game right now is to know that on HNIC Hrudey called him out as a player not willing to compete or work hard or earn his paycheck.
Don't have a link, but it's the most bashing I've ever heard from Hrudey about a single player. It was like ... wow, where did that come from.
Hey LT,
ReplyDeleteHere are some questions for your guests;
- Given Iggy doesn't want to move, and that ownership and mgt don't want to trade him, how many more 'bloggers in their underwear' press conferences will Feaster have to do tbs year?
- Does the injury to Giordano all but sink the Flames playoff hopes?
- Converting Byfuglien to defense appears to have been a success, but what are his underlying defensive stats like?
- The Gagner for Bogosian rumours appeared to make a lot of sense, do they still?
Have a great show!
My big problem with Jones last year was his defensive positioning (non-existent) and poor fore-check strategy (left himself out of the play) and bad back-checking
ReplyDeleteI was at almost every home game last year. If you decided to follow a player, you see a ton you don't see on the TV. Especially when the player you are watching is constantly far away from the play due to the above failings.
This bad play was shown best in his horrid WOWY scoring chances where every Oiler but one was worse with him on the ice (in terms of SC) and his SC level was in the .300's (below .450 is considered below replacement)
This is a case where the stats and "saw him bad" came together perfectly.
I am happy to admit that my prognostication of him was wrong. I'm an Oiler fan, I want all 23 players to be good.
I still think that Harski was the superior option at 3/4 RW in camp.
Jones is much, much better in the areas he was poor in last year. Most of the improvement came after playing with 10 and 94, so we can infer they taught him a bunch of things. I'm sure Renney can take some teaching credit too.
His signing, based on his body of work at the time he signed, was wrong.
He has far exceeding expectations, and perhaps the coaches and management thought he could improve. Perhaps they are just lucky he has improved as much as he has.
Even when he was still in my personal dog house, I always thought he was one of the better Oilers at going to the net with and without the puck. An art that all NHLers need to be good at.
Some of his goals may be lucky and into open nets, but you need to be there to get them.
Hope he keeps his horseshoe shaped stick.
@Regwald
ReplyDeleteAdmittedly, I don't watch a lot of Flamer hockey but he could just need a change of scene.
Advanced math suggests Bogosian took a step forward this year.
ReplyDeleteGood, that proves our theories about non-linear development and means Bogo might be available for a discount.
ReplyDeleteIf I was making a trade with Calgary I would look at big bodies that can play tough on the bottom 6. Like Comeau and GlenX. Competent offensive players that have big bodies and will increase physical play if someone starts running our skilled players
ReplyDeleteIf we could get a top pairing D man it would accelerate how quickly we could compete because it allows everyone to move down the a slot or two in where they are asked to play. Gilbert and Smid would be a very good 2nd pairing. We are not as far away from competing as some think
Sorry, FPB, read that as step backward for some reason. No discount for us.
ReplyDeleteSpoiler: That's after taking steps down the 2 previous seasons.
ReplyDeleteSo cookies for us.
Poster on ON commenting Hartski lost for the season with shoulder injury. No link.
ReplyDelete@The other John
ReplyDeleteI'm trying to find out if Bourque has any bottom 6 skills. I see him as maybe a 3rd liner that can fill in on the 2nd line if needs be on the Oilers.
Iginla could be a 2nd liner with grit now and be a leader and 3rd liner with Smyth as they get older.
LT, since you're reffering to Jonesy I thought this Dixie Dregs tune "Take it off the Top"(as in The Flow) was more appropriate!
ReplyDeletehttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XX-A4HvoGu8&feature=fvwrel
Will be listening today, good luck!
The key is that they are big, physical and skilled. This is all highly unlikely and improbable to begin with but I don't think that it'd be healthy to bring GlenX back but he's the kind of player we need. Comeau is interesting but I think the Flames are going to keep him.
ReplyDeleteWell, we knew that was a serious injury, likely a separation, but losing the whole season is a tremendous blow to young Harski's career.
ReplyDeleteroaddog: MUCH better choice. :-)
ReplyDeleteIf you pick up Bourque, who are you giving up on? Paajarvi? Bourques seems like a risky pickup and it feels pretty early to be giving up in Brother Magnus. They could have just kept Penner around.
ReplyDeleteIginla would be nice but he's the Flames biggest trade piece and I imagine they'd want something good for him. It's probably too early into the rebuild to be trading developing guys for immediate help right now.
Tencer tweet...
ReplyDelete"I've been dealing with some things and that's why haven't been shooting. It's my shoulder it's a little sore but getting better" Ales Hemsky
Sigh...
Shoot, that was a Principe tweet, not Tencer
ReplyDeleteShould ask Gregor if he ever got a call from Lowe or Burke inquiring about a barn rental....
ReplyDelete"Bad Ryan".. haha.. nice...
ReplyDeleteFor all those slagging his 'shot' (and its relation to %), I would typical echo those sentiments but lets not forget his second goal last night.. that was a decent one-timer that not every forward on the oil would take.. credit where due..
He continues to make good on the opportunities provided..
Ya, for the most part I'm ok with not doing a deal, especially with Calgary, unless the price is just right.
ReplyDeletewrt 83's shoulder.. I cant get Souray's comments, in relation to being rushed back, outa my mind..
ReplyDeleteIts like letting Hall go back out after he first injured his shoulder.. for the better?!..
Oilers and Flames are identical 4-5-1 in the last 10.
ReplyDeleteOiler team PDO 1018
Flames team PDO 1005
Oiler special teams:
21.6 PP 84.7 PK = 106.3 (3rd best combination behind VAN 110.4 PIT 108.2)
Flames special teams:
12.5 PP 81.2 PK = 93.7 (26th in NHL)
Without their best D in Giordano, the Flames are going to fall even further.
Their two "best" assets have pretty high price tags vis a vi performance.
Kipper: 5.83 cap for another 2 years, actual dollars $5MM, $1.5MM
Iginla: 7.0 cap for 1 more year, $7M actual.
Someone might bite on either, but I wouldn't expect the world coming back like the Richards or Carter deals.
Ritch Winter mused that turning around CAL would take 5-7 years.
The schadenfreude in Edmonton will be knee deep for a decade.
Oilers need to play like they did in the 3rd for a couple periods tonight. Preferably the 1st and 2nd so CAL will quit on the game.
RNH on HNIC.
Anyone know who Scott Oake is going to ask uncomfortable questions to tonight?
Andy Sutton and Tom Renney on After Hours per Oake tweet (yea, he's on twiiter, apparently)
ReplyDeleteHow dare you? Scott Oake is a national treasure.
ReplyDelete@Woodguy: one thing that was clear from day one of the signing was Jones was over-the-top happy to be playing in Edmonton. Sometimes the right motivation is all it takes to get people to start doing the right things. I bought a proper bed, and started shaving shortly after meeting my first girlfriend...
ReplyDeleteDon't have a link, but it's the most bashing I've ever heard from Hrudey about a single player.
ReplyDelete@Regwald: You must have missed the time Hrudey went off on Patrick O'Sullivan. I didn't think he was wrong at the time, either. Haven't seen enough of current-model Bourque to know, but have seen enough of Hrudey to realize that if he sees a guy not competing hard enough it drives him right around the bend.
Other national treasures: Ben Johnson, Olympic Stadium, Eric Lindros' mom, the Toronto Raptors.
ReplyDeleteIt's funny how jarring seeing a bearded Mike Comrie wearing 91 in the background of that photo is. Just two seasons ago, but it seems like a different world.
ReplyDeleteMarincin on ShawTV right now; replay of last night's match.
ReplyDeleteHow dare you? Scott Oake is a national treasure.
ReplyDeleteHe's a national treasure because he asks uncomfortable questions.
Had no idea he as on twitter.
Gotta find his twitter handle.
WG: Try @ScottOake.
ReplyDeleteYou expected subtle?
Bouwmeester has the hardest qualcomp and worst qualteam among CGY Dmen and has a 0+/-/60.
ReplyDeleteDoing the heavy lifting with Butler
That's impressive.
Bruce,
ReplyDeleteFound him pretty quick.
ubersocial for blackberry has a good search function.
Bad, bad LeRy Jones, baddest Ry in the whole damn town, badder than old Kapp Khan, meaner than a greenbroke colt.
ReplyDeleteSad as it is, that took some doing. Oh come on now, I just want a pickle before my hat floats down from the upper deck past the distressed visage of Woodguy reduced to a Van Gogh double sidepalm.
Andy Kapp is almost before my time. As a seven year old, I thought it was a waste of ink. Was never my "player type" as LT would put it.
DMW: I used to think the same of Andy Kapp until I got a whole book of it once, and started to "get it" part way through. It was like watching the same player for an entire season, even if he approaches things different than you might like, you start to see some of the logic in it. Or not.
ReplyDeleteAndy Kapp summarized: Spousal violence! Ha ha!
ReplyDeleteThe Oakester only follows 2 players on Twitter, one being RNH (the other is Whitney). What's he up to?
ReplyDelete@Woodguy "Had no idea he as on twitter."
ReplyDeleteYeah..I suspect he doesn't either.
Some people thought Cogliano's shooting percentages were not sustainable even though he shot them for two years. Turns out they weren't.
He seems improved but I wonder what 3.2 could get in a trade?
SC's for last night: http://www.mc79hockey.com/?p=4042
ReplyDeleteWe all knew that 83 was playing banged up just as we know that 6 is playing hurt as well. 83 shot a few times last night and played the body so maybe he's starting to feel a bit better.
ReplyDelete6's own zone coverage has been deplorable - he's a statue trying to guard his own crease - and you hope he starts to come around as well.
I haven't caught up yet today on Twitter but there are a couple of OKC writers on there; I really hope 56 isn't done for the season.
Echo LT and Dennis that Hemsky had By Far his best period of the season in the third last night. Whatever Renney said must have pushed the right button, cuz the first positive thing that happened for the Oil drop right off the hop was Hemmer crunching Methot with a real good dart. A few minutes later he really rocked Tyutin behind the net. He fired a couple of slap shots and of course got that beauty goal. To me it seemed like he was the initiator of the action, the aggressive attacking side of him we have seen only in fleeting glimpses this season.
ReplyDeleteThat Ales is a helluva player. It was great to see.
Dennis mentions Whitney's mobility, which was one thing I tried to watch for in the building against the Wild. There were a few times when he got up a little speed and joined the play, but he seemed real hesitant on the quick decision-type movements, the stops and starts in reaction to the puck. Passed up a couple of easy possessions with his conservative decisions, backing off instead of stepping up to the puck, or worse, caught standing still.
ReplyDeleteI remain concerned to put it mildly. He did not give the impression of full confidence in his mobility.
That Rotoworld post on Hartikainen sources a Matheson article in the Journal a couple of days ago. The online version of that Journal article mentions nothing about Hartikainen's injury being season ending.
ReplyDeleteSo it seem pretty bogus at this point.
I'd like to see the Oilers really kick the Flames' ass tonight.
ReplyDeleteLike a 6-1 beat down.
A win where the Oilers score 3 powerplay goals on the first 3 penalties taken by the Flames, all of them bad hooking calls in the Ozone.
A win where a tough Flames Dman (are there any left?) tries to paste Hemsky, but misses him and knocks himself out of the game when he plasters his own shoulder into the boards.
A win where Laddy Smid tries to plant his own face into the glass, but Jokeinen slides in front of him and gets concussed.
A loss where the Rexall crowd spends the entire 3rd period drunkenly chanting "Kiiiiiiiiippperrrrrr, Kiiiiiiipppeerrrr", and have it morph into "Beeeellllllffffoooooorrrrrr"
One of those "soul searching" losses that cause players only meetings the next day for the losing team.
One of those losses that would cause the proper reporters, like Diane Francis' son, to ask Uncle Fester about the future of Iginla, not just the cheezie eating, pajama wearing bloggers like $10K Dowbiggin.
A win where Scott Oake is compelled to ask Renney on After Hours, "how lucky do you feel to have players like Eberle and RNH keeping you from becoming a failure?"
I'd like to see that tonight please.
I remain concerned to put it mildly. He did not give the impression of full confidence in his mobility.
ReplyDeleteBruce, you have been around the game long enough to know that it often takes months for players to return to normal after a serious injury. Gagner, Whitney, and Hemsky all came off of injury during the season - the fact they are playing somewhere between 50% and 90% of their norm is indeed - normal.
It seems like there is a collective amnesia about this concept this year amongst Oiler fans.
This comment has been removed by the author.
ReplyDeleteIt seems like there is a collective amnesia about this concept this year amongst Oiler fans.
ReplyDeleteSorry, what were we talking about....?
Milk of Magnesia, or something like that.
ReplyDeleteFigures, that Pinko Bookie...
Next thing you know bookie will be calling for Castro's brother (Raul? Dennis?) to run Edmonton for the public good.
ReplyDeletePshaw.
And breaks his toe.
ReplyDeleteJeebus. Woodguy's post made me tear up. Yes, please.
ReplyDelete7-0 Oilers. Gagner with a hatrick, other goals by RNH, Smid, Horcoff and Dvo..I mean MPS.
ReplyDeleteJust had a short Twitter convo with the beat reporter of the OKC Barons (@tweetneal). He was aware of the Hartikainen injury rumors but did not have confirmation. He did say that Teemu was at the game last night and appeared to be moving his arm and shoulder normally.
ReplyDeleteWatching the Sens/Caps game.. and wow; the Caps powerplay is horrific. Its point shot or nothing and they really struggle to get zone entry.
ReplyDeleteDavid Perron with the first goal in the Blues game tonight. Very nice to see.
ReplyDelete@book¡e: Uh, yeah, I do know that. I also know it was ten months before he even played, and now it's another number of weeks, and I'm just giving a progress report is all. It may be the aggressive instincts are the last thing to come back, but he's still struggling by eye. Not coming naturally, for sure.
ReplyDeleteI like these new conferences. The Edmonton conference should be the "Gretzky" conference.
ReplyDeleteLowetide: What would the other three conference names be then? Orr, Howe and Messier?
ReplyDeleteA lot of help so far on the out-of-town scoreboard; two points sure would be sweet.
ReplyDeleteHBomb: Orr, Richard and Howe.
ReplyDeleteYou can only hope to contain him.
ReplyDeleteNow *that*'s why we signed him. I assume. By process of elimination.
ReplyDeleteGags!!@@
ReplyDeleteGilmour!
ReplyDeleteBye-bye Kipper?
ReplyDeleteLETS SEE A BEAT DOWN!!
ReplyDeleteQHATERNARY SCORING AND GAGNER SCORING!
ReplyDeleteIts just wrong that Smid got two goals before Gagner got his first.
ReplyDeleteAwesome start tonight.
We want ten?
We want ten?
ReplyDeleteWe're on pace for more than thirty - seems sustainable.
Fucksakes.
ReplyDeleteOh, right - Khabi.
ReplyDeleteKhabbi has to have that; basic goal-tending he messed up there; the stick just wasn't where it had to be.
ReplyDeleteDumb penalty to take, as well.
Glad Sutton didn't let Stepniak run his show.
ReplyDeleteStauffer's happy.
Oh, right - Khabi.
ReplyDeleteWhitney and Petry looked pretty silly there.
ReplyDeletePetry and Whitney with the horrendous passing. How do they mess up 4-6 passes like that?
ReplyDeleteWhitney is just a pylon out there.
ReplyDeleteMaybe Renney should have him playing 3rds until he can move.
Actually, on viewing the replay, that wasn't on Khabi, though you'd like not to see that rebound.
ReplyDeleteOzone faceoff off an icing with a tired CGY line and Renney put's the 4th line out there?????
ReplyDeleteWTF???
Probably had them out because Omarra is one of the few centers we have at the moment who wins more draws than he loses; but he got waved out for looking at the ref funny or something.
ReplyDeleteCBC is right about one thing, though; the defending tonight has been atrocious for both teams.
Sutton brought back memories of George Laraque there, with his little offensive burst... where nothing happened.
ReplyDeleteGagner and Hordichuk score and then they go back into the world's weirdest shell..
ReplyDeleteSome of the back-checking has been.. extremely lax. When Petry went down, in the replay, you could see one forward just half-assing it back and it nearly cost us.
ReplyDeleteOilers look inconsistent. PP was death.
ReplyDeleteI've never seen a team shut it down 3:00 into a game. Sad really.
ReplyDeleteHopefully Renney can wake them up in the intermission. They need it.
That was gross. They can't be tired considering they only played one period last night. Nothing like getting up to play against your provincial rivals on HNIC.
ReplyDeleteI look forward to hearing the rest of the reasons that Ryan Smyth is captain of this team.
ReplyDeleteLast night redux.
ReplyDeleteEarly goal(s), then coast is all zones since the game is in the bag.
Wonder if Renney is going to pull out the "if you're going to lose a game, doing while trying to win' speech in the 1st intermission instead of the 2nd.
Haven't seen a forward with a clue how to back check in the game yet.
Whitney should be playing 3rd pairing. He looks slower than Struddy out there.
PJ Stock with 3 factual errors in his analysis.
ReplyDeleteThat's less than usual.
This team is like a teenager going through puberty. Confident and loud when things are going well. Then when a slight disturbance or setback emerges, they retreat into a shell of insecurity or, worse, apathy.
ReplyDeleteLet's hope they grow up fast.
Also, Sutton with one of the dumbest penalties known to man. And it opens the door for the flames to get a foothold. Stupidity beyond anger.
Bookie: I don't think anyone plays at 50%; not unless it's G7 and you don't have anyone else to go.
ReplyDeleteMPS is completely adverse to taking hits. He bails every time. He's the antithesis to Ales Hemsky. No hands, and no jam.
ReplyDeleteI noticed it last season, but you give kids the benefit of the doubt. There has been no change whatsoever this year.
He's going to have a long and productive hockey career. In the SEL.
LT: I think the New Old Patrick Divison should be called "Dale Hunter Hates Pierre Turgeron" considering the former is back there coaching now
ReplyDeleteHolly hell, Whitney was playing goal there and Petry giving way too much space. Sutton/Peckham better get more ice time this period.
ReplyDeleteHow come everytime Joe Piskula is out Renney goes with the third or fourth line? This game is in Edmonton isn't it?
ReplyDeleteAnd Gilbert still hasn't sharpened his skates from last night's slip up.
ReplyDeleteI don't care which way he shoots, Petry should replace Belanger on the PP.
ReplyDeleteBelanger's puck management can easily be described as carefree and soft. And his shot is below average.
This powerplay is.. so last year.
ReplyDeleteAnd Belanger looks like the Killer of Plays out there on it, not that its new (or that he's alone in it tonight).
They just look dead tired.. or in hangover mode.
All these brutal PP's and going to cost the team points tonight.
ReplyDeleteO boy. That hurts the ribs.
Horcoff is done. All is lost. Abandon all hope. Fuuuuuuuck!
ReplyDeleteIf we're not going to win the draw anyways, Belanger has no excuse being on the PP.
ReplyDeleteThese refs can only call hooking, holding the puck, delay of game, etc, calls.
ReplyDeleteIf you actually foul someone with the puck they have no fucking clue.
First Smyth, now Horcoff.
I thought getting some PP time would be key to Oilers winning this game.
Little did I know that the entire team drank their body weight in whiskey after yesterday's game and can't fucking skate tonight.
91-89-83 now.
ReplyDeleteWas hoping that would be the 3rd line for a long time and see 2nd/3rd pairings.
Didn't expect to see it as 1/2 with 10 and 4 out.
Good to see 10 on the bench.
ReplyDeleteI am alone in this thread.
ReplyDeleteThis is PAINFUL. I'm done. Enjoy the game.
ReplyDeleteIn the spirit of Festivus we may have to have the airing of grievences tonight regarding NHL officiating.
ReplyDeleteI remember last year somebody posted the official guide to situational officiating - it's on display tonight
So far the Oilers deserve to lose this game, and lose badly. They're not playing anywhere near as well as Calgary, as sad as that is to say. The reffing hasn't been great, but the Oilers have been worse.
ReplyDelete@WG
ReplyDeleteThe Flames have been victim to 4 phantom calls.
It'll even up in the third period.
Book it.
I am alone in this thread.
ReplyDeleteI'm still here, but it's hard to type when you're drinking your body weight in whiskey.
Between the sassy saves and the Oilers getting a little something something going, this announcing is going to make me hit the mute button right away. Maybe the announcers should switch with the refs for the 3rd period and we'll see if we can't get an improvement for both.
ReplyDeleteSutton sure does play a thinking mans game.
ReplyDeleteI am here. I think LT is trolling :) at flamesnation.
ReplyDeleteI don't care if he didn't hit him, what the F was Sutton thinking there? Bunch of dumbys out there tonight.
ReplyDeleteDid the Oilers have their Xmas party last night?
Powerplays really are going to be the key to winning this game. Have to get Calgary more of them, if Edmonton is going to score.
ReplyDeleteThe Oilers don't pay their bill at those parties.
ReplyDeleteSave of the year right there.
ReplyDeleteDespite my early mockery, Khabibulin probably wouldn't be among my top eighteen candidates for reverse three stars tonight.
ReplyDeleteRelatedly, I keep being surprised when I notice that we're tied.
ReplyDeleteThat's it, I'm swithching to Whiskey now. Only way to watch this game.
ReplyDeleteWoodguy,
ReplyDeleteAgree that the reffing has been beyond suspect in the game. The Jbo double treat of slash/cross check gets nothing, but ticky-tack "hooking" calls light up the refs eyes.
But the oilers have been brutal on the PP tonight. No puck support. They seem lost. Could see calgary scoring here to cap off a great road period on the PK.

ReplyDeleteYou forgot about the lateral larceny and the goaltending symphony:)
Although, to be fair, a flair for the faux poetic is something different than the usual bumbling, repetitive nonsense that Debrusk routinely provides.
The McCafe commercials sound like they're saying "every mick cafe"
ReplyDeleteIm guessing in Ireland they have cafes. Better known in north America as pubs.
After party at the barn. Hosted by Burke and Lowe.
Lookat that. Smid scores his 2nd and Fred Penner with his 1st of the year.
ReplyDeleteAnother Festivus miracle.

Not after they see their brutal missed calls on 94 and 10.
But the oilers have been brutal on the PP tonight. No puck support.
Agreed.
CGY out-manning the Oilers 2-1 far too often. I thought the point of the PP was to use the extra man so YOU could out man the opposition when working for possession?
Relatedly, I keep being surprised when I notice that we're tied.
Ha! My wife just got home and asked how the game was going. After my profanity laced tirade she said, "really? but the score is tied isn't it?"
The broadcast is 50% improved without Weekes.
ReplyDeleteJHowever, Lee's description of Sutton cruising through the O-zone like a battleship was quite creative.
Oh, yah.. The game. NK has been great, but I'm afraid Kipper has shut the door for the rest of tonight. Only hope is NK stealing a point IMO.
ReplyDeleteFlames get 2 PPs in the first 7 minutes of the 3rd - book it. It's in the handbook
To be a battleship you'd have to have offensive weapons... He's more of a whaling ship.
ReplyDeleteDamn Ebs had an open net tap in there.
ReplyDeleteWell, shit, now I'm just going to be even more surprised when I see the scoreboard.
ReplyDeleteNuuuugge!
ReplyDeleteOh noz!
ReplyDeleteNOOOOOOOGE!!!!!!
ReplyDeletePrevious levels of confusion restored.
ReplyDeleteFuck you!!!1 fhjfdkh! !fcjoi!
ReplyDelete93 is pretty good even on an off night.
ReplyDeleteThat was off side by a foot. 2nd one missed tonight
Oh well. I shouldn't watch this shit, I spilled my drink all over myself.
ReplyDeleteNever thought I'd live to here "Smid w/a howitzer".
ReplyDeleteJesus Smyth.
ReplyDeleteChanneling theformercaptainethanmoreau?
Man. This blog needs a liquor sponsor. liquor? Is that how you spell it? l-i-q-u-o-r-? Man that looks wrong. I'll check it in the morning.
ReplyDeleteSmyth can't take that penalty.. not in the third of a tied game.
ReplyDeleteThis game is incredibly frustrating.. up 2-0 quick.. then tied shortly after. Outplayed until the third.. get the go ahead.. and less than a minute later, perfect shot fucks us.
We don't deserve to get a pointy in this, but playoff teams find ways to get points in games like this.
Only thing worse than the refs this game has been the Oiler's PP.
Anyone think EDM will loan RNH to the WJH in DEC? ;)
ReplyDelete"Likor" is the way to do it.
ReplyDeleteThe game made me drink. First, frustration drinking. Then excitement. Then fear drinking.
Shit.
Man. Oilers. You sure try the fanbase.
ReplyDeleteMaybe if he has a game or two below the PPG threshold.
ReplyDeleteEdmonton has to have the league lead in "goal-causing-fuckups-directly-attributalbe-to-sloppy-line-changes". Is there an advanced stat for that?
ReplyDeleteNow sadness/embarrassment drinking.
ReplyDeletePetry's goat horns just got longer
ReplyDeleteNo coach would ever keep that stat
ReplyDeleteseems about right.
ReplyDeleteAnybody at the game to confirm the ice is absolutely terrible tonight? Some of the best skaters in the league falling all over the place tonight.
Eventually, I will start acceptance drinking.
ReplyDeleteFFS why is Petry out there with Whitney of all people.
ReplyDeleteUnless there's blood gushing or a bone sticking out, keep 77 & 5 out there.
Smyth better score two now.
A lot of defense-men falling backwards like that tonight. Saw it about five times in the Sens/Caps game alone.
ReplyDeleteHorrific change by the Oilers. Don't get it past center ice and half the penalty killers go to change without even looking back.
This game is.. just, wow.
But this is the type of game we'll get with even this phase of the rebuild.
Oiler's PP 0/5
ReplyDeleteCalgary PP 2/3
Assholes.
Watching this team is a special, and particularly cutting, from of masochism. Nuge. Exalted joy. Then disappointment and anger. Brutal.
ReplyDeletePetry's the goat, but Smyth has got to be smarter. Dumb penalty to begin with.
ReplyDeleteAnybody at the game to confirm the ice is absolutely terrible tonight? Some of the best skaters in the league falling all over the place tonight.
Don't need to be at the game to know that.
That frost covered slurpee is garbage and has been for years.
They're almost as bad as last year's Oilers.
ReplyDeleteF. Hemsky, can't go offside there.
ReplyDelete89s best game of the year.
ReplyDeletePossibly 91s as well besides the bailing in the corners
Yeah talk about a frustrating team to watch, but I'll take it compared to the last two seasons thats for sure.
ReplyDeleteNow for the PP
The worst part is, as bad as the Oilers have played.. if we'd have cashed on just one of the almost ten empty net opportunities..
ReplyDeleteJust not going our way tonight, all around.
Only upside is unlike last year.. this kind of game hasn't been the norm.
If Karma is real, Jay Feastoneverythings comments this summer will let EDM score on tis PP
ReplyDeleteKarma is not real. Nor is this PP.`
ReplyDeleteI still don't get why teams in this situation don't pull the goalie with the PP.
ReplyDeleteSmyth seems lost out there tonight. His passes aren't finding their target and he seems to not have any jump.
ReplyDeleteIs there a flu going around Edmonton?
Now that's just unlucky for 94
ReplyDeleteI have hate in my heart. Not sure if I am ready for a playoff game if the team ever gets there.
ReplyDeleteFrickin Jar Jar poopkinen scores.
ReplyDeleteBetter be an early morning skate tomorrow
Bourque negating that icing pretty much sums up the game. The Oil looked like they were skating on sand tonight.
ReplyDeleteThis crap happens over and over again against CGY and VAN.
ReplyDeleteSmyth literally saved the game for CGY. Same shit different game.
The Flames have been at their best in the third period. Going in tied was not a good signal for the good ship Oil.
ReplyDeletedid not look good in that last period
Something needs to be done about Ryan Whitney, if this is he post surgery skating ability, the Oilers are in trouble.
ReplyDeleteOther than the PP in the 3rd they actually played a decent period. Had the chances to tie it up.
ReplyDeleteShitty PP, Perfect Shot, bad change, good save by Calgary D and Kippper getting lucky on the Smyth rebound = L
Flames will always be a better team when they play the Oilers as compared to playing the rest of the league. Not as if it matters this year - neither team will make the playoffs.
As bad as the Oilers played tonight, it's amazing RNH still managed to get a goal. He wasn't doing much tonight.
ReplyDeleteThis game can be described best by three words. Lazy, lack, and dumb. Lazy skating, lack of effort, and dumb plays.
ReplyDeleteWhy is Belanger still on the PP night in night out? The number of times the play died because of him were astounding. I counted 3 in the first minute of that 2nd PP alone! I respect the guy on the PK, but he is an offensive black hole right now despite gravy PP minutes. Something has to be done to fix it, including dropping him down to the fourth and getting him to focus on what he is good at. It's obvious he can't move or think fast enough to keep up with the rest of his line mates.
Oilers had a chance to make a statement in this homestand.
ReplyDeleteSo far, the best word to describe it is: Brutal.
Not quite like the past 2 years only because they came back last night.
But this game had shades of last year written all over it.
