  1. With the current pace he's setting this year, Smyth is moving into historic spots on the lists. Maybe not PPG stuff, but very impressive.

Oh what a shame he ever left.

  2. Well if there's a God, Smyth will pass Lowe on the all time GP list.

  3. Where would he be on those lists had he never left?

As in his points and games from the other teams included into the totals?

  4. That's about 3 more seasons ... dare we dream before he is torn from our hearts again ?

Will he Lanny McDonald like hoisting the cup from the press box ?

  5. Smyth career:

    1,083GP (#1)
    362 goals (stays the same)
    412 assists (passes Lowe)

  6. Here's to Smytty, a man truly deserving of our respect and admiration, and one who wakes up copper and goes to sleep blue. Let's have a drink for Ryan.

  7. So, that "Wayne Gretzky" guy was pretty good at this "hockey" thing...

  8. I still miss Weight. Buddy should have retired an Oiler. Was a strange sight seeing him lift the cup in Carolina silks.

  9. Also for a bit of humour, I was browsing through the Senators SBNation blog and came across a post proposing the trade of Brian Lee for Linus Omark straight up.

The comments section was fun, and I'm sure that's how most other fans look at the 'trade ideas' floated by Oilers fans.

Some commenters eventually worked their way up to Sam Gagner and Tyler Bunz for Lee, Regin, and a spare part before someone finally piped up that if you'd do a trade in a heartbeat, it probably means you're not paying enough and it's pie in the sky.

  10. Smytty getting the 6.25M contract offer from the Oilers and the team subsequently sucking may have changed some fans view of him.

Contract issues aside, he never should have left and it's great to have him back. He's even growing his mullet again!

Wonder what Stevie Y thinks of the game in TBay tonight? Boucher and Laviolette just made a mockery of the game.

  11. Crazy stuff happening in Philly tonight. Laviolette instructs the team not to fall into Tampa's pathetic trap. Defenseman stands still for minutes at a time while the Philly bench calls the players pussies from the sidelines.

Most will hate it but as a fan that just about walked away from hockey during the "dark ages" of the pre-lockout NHL, I absolutely love it. The trap is awful for the game but it's like heroin for the coaches because the damned thing works so well.

I believe terrible teams have made the playoffs (Minnesota Wild) because of the trap. I believe average teams have gone to the Cup final (Florida Panthers) because of the trap. I believe good teams have won numerous Cups because of the trap. I believe terrible goalies are in the record books as all time greats (Roman Turek and Roman Cechmanek are both Top 10 all-time GAA) because of the trap. I believe I have no fucking clue which goalies are good or bad anymore (Khabibulin, Mike Smith, Bryzgalov) because of the trap. I also strongly believe a good goalie is considered one of the best ever (Martin Brodeur) entirely because of the trap.

Only four times (in 14 games) this season has the losing team in an Oilers game scored 2 goals. Only once has the losing team scored 3 goals. And not a single time, in 28 opportunities has a team scored 5 goals in an Oilers game this season. Maybe it's because this team is all of a sudden amazing defensively or perhaps its because we have a coach that is extremely motivated to win.

If I know the NHL and the MSM, Philly will be blamed and a delay of game penalty will be the rule created after tonight when in my opinion, this is exactly the catalyst needed to create an illegal defense rule.

  12. @kt:
Get rid of the off side rule, get rid of the trap. Or at least make it less effective.
Off sides add less to the game than they take away.

  13. "Get rid of the offside rule" are you nuts?? That is the number one rule for playmaking; it dictates whether a play is made or whether a play is reset. I haven't seen any test games where the offside rule is out, but I can't imagine that to resemble hockey...

  14. I agree with what everyone's saying about Smyth, but what those lists really drove home to me is how good Hemsky is - for a guy to play in the era he has to be top ten in Oilers' points without being top ten in games played is a feat. (Weight too, but he may have been more properly appreciated than Hemsky is.)

And yeah, I get the injury prone thing, and there are probably cases to be made that he's not going to be worth his next contract, wherever he signs it. I still hope it's here.

  15. are you nuts??
Probably a little. It's crazy not to be. ;)

I understand off sides are a huge part of the game. I now getting rid of them would change a lot of the systems players and coaches are used to using and the result would be a lot different than what fans are used to seeing.

But I think opening up the game and reducing stoppages makes the game more interesting to watch. Fundamentally you get rid of systems play by reducing the size of the rule book, not increasing it.

Anyway, to really get my point across about it, it'd take more than there's room for in a blog post.

  16. I don't know how else to put this: if you are against the offside rule, you're against the game of hockey. That is probably the number one rule which characterizes the game.

If you want to solve the "problem" of trap games, then find another way.

  17. /deep breath...

"off sides" is not, (are not?) and never will be part of hockey.

    American football? Yes.

    Hockey? No.

    Jeebus....

  18. Can't remember a lot of offsides on the pond or in the backyard. That said, it certainly is a big part of rink hockey.

Ryan Smyth, Captain Canada, is carryin these kids of ours on his shoulders right now. I can't imagine what effect watching him out there is having on them. I know what effect it is having on me: delighted and enthralled.

I can't express how happy I am that Smytty traded himself back to the Oilers.

  19. I always turned the offsides off before using Kirk Muller to dominate everything in his path in NHL '94.

  20. Lacrosse is probably closer to basketball than it is to hockey in spirit, but to the eye it definitely can be compared to hockey, eg there's a net at each end, five players and a goalie etc.

There are no offsides in Lacrosse and it works pretty well. I haven't played in years but I think I remember an over-and-back rule similar to basketball. This makes for a lot more back and forth play; I don't think you can really trap in lacrosse.

Not saying this should be the case in hockey, just that it would be possible to play the game without offsides and not ruin the game. You might see more lacrosse scores like 12-10 more often.

  21. As for the Philly-Tampa game, I think that was pretty funny. I like that Philly drew attention to what Tampa was doing by not skating right into the trap.

I agree with knighttown it's hilarious that the Philly bench was just beaking the Lightning players while they were standing there.
