Since Marchant beat Moog the southerners have had the decided edge, and that edge has stretched over a long time. On the '06 run, I kept hoping that the Oilers would meet them in the playoffs (Colorado dispatched Dallas about the same time the Oilers were flushing Detroit) because that was one spring Dallas would have been in trouble.
I won't be cheering against Souray, the Oilers put themselves in the position of being the bad guy in that scenario long ago. However, I'll cheer like hell for the team to beat Dallas, and will vehemently refuse to acknowledge a feeling of impending doom even if the good guys go down 2 goals.
I honestly have no idea what to expect from the Oilers at this point. I think one of the teams will win and neither team will score 11. I think Dallas will score at least one special teams goal. After that, it's a blur.
Rookie scoring 11-12

- Adam Henrique 15, 4-7-11
Oilers Top 12 F's (5x5/60 mins behind the net)

- Taylor Hall 1.77
- Ryan Jones 1.57

According to tsn, Dallas has lost 5 in a row. They have Eriksson and Benn plus some talented scorers and their goaltending is good. Their defense looks weird to me: a bunch of stay at homes and a shooter in Souray, but it doesn't look like a modern day crew. I guess that's Goligoski's job.
I don't make predictions, especially after Saturday night. That's why you play the games.

Oilers 50/50 to beat Stars tonight.
ReplyDeleteOilers have a 25% chance of administering another Hawks style rout of the Stars tonight.
ReplyDeleteI won't be cheering against Souray, the Oilers put themselves in the position of being the bad guy in that scenario long ago.
Hey, they were good enough to buy the guy out and let him be free on the open market as opposed to forcing him to play in the AHL again this season.
I use a one game trajectory in my prediction analysis and thus I have the Oilers scoring 9 goals tonight.
Odds Update:
ReplyDeleteOilers have a 15% chance of running up the score tonight, not 25%.
bookie: They punished him with a year in Chocolate City, there's no way tot turn that clock back. It is what it is, you can't walk around being petty and then be surprised when it's common knowledge.
ReplyDeleteThe world isn't built that way.
Souray had better not be running at the Kid Line tonight.
ReplyDeleteInstead, let's all pick our favourite Oiler to get taken out of the game by Souray.
I pick Theo Peckham.
So do you run 10 + wingers and 5/77 against:
ReplyDeleteEricksson-Ribero-Morrow
or
Benn-Ott-Ryder?
I think you have to go with line one.
This is the same conundrum that Renney needs to give opposing coaches:
94-93-14
or
4-89-83
With 10 losing 94 from his left hip there's deeper waters on the other side of the dyke that he has his finger in.
Who thought a tough minute LW would be something the Oilers would lack at this point?
28 is ok on 10's RW, but he's not a feature player there, but complimentary.
57-10-28 got their head kicked in via SC last game. Mind you, Toews-Hossa-Stalberg with Keith behind is probably top 5 in the NHL as a group, most would get kicked in the junk trying to hold those guys back.
Out of everyone on the team who's lunch Lander might have eaten, I would have put 91 near the bottom of that list.
Both DAL and EDM rode unreal SV% to early season wins, but I think EDM has the better team to sustain a .500.
EDM opened at +130 on bet365, and have moved to +115.
That's probably about right.
Waiting for 6 to come back and settle the top 4 into:
ReplyDelete5-77
6-58
Is like standing in front of a penalty kick in soccer covering your nuts and staring at the shooter.
You know the shot is coming and you pray to various gods that:
1) It doesn't hit your balls
2) Its doesn't go in the net
The Oilers wont get .944 SV% and 26.5%SH every night like they did vs. CHI to hide the Dcorps deficiencies. (one game PDO of 1210, who says there's no luck in hockey?)
Please get healthy soon 6.
So if MPS doesn't see the pressbox, hopefully they roll him on Horc's line. Gives them someone who can scare opposing D's with his speed, and of all the remaining forwards he may be the most defensively aware. It also gets him some icetime at EV's. You can then run a combo of Petrell/Lander with Belanger and goon.
ReplyDeleteAlso,
ReplyDeleteThe unreal Gabe Desjardin has a new Fenwick page for teams up now.
You can find it here.
I love this metric for measuring relative qualities of teams, especially when the score is tied/close.
I thought that CBJ was playing well and getting below AHL goaltending. This helps confirm that thought.
Two tips for betting.
Take CBJ if Mason isn't starting.
Fade MIN.
You're welcome.
This is a personal thing and I will undoubtedly piss people off saying but whatever:
ReplyDeletecom-pli-men-ta-ry: adj. 1.Expressing a compliment; praising or approving. 2. Given or supplied free of charge.
com-ple-men-ta-ry: adj. 1. Completing; forming a complement.
2. (of two or more different things) Combining in such a way as to enhance or emphasize each other's qualities.
There is a difference and, even if you're well educated and bright, you look like an idiot using the wrong one. It's the visual equivalent of nails on a chalkboard.
And I just looked back to see who had done it in this thread. It's Woodguy, who I really like AND think is smart/knows what he's talking about (yes, I'm being complimentary.)
ReplyDeleteWe will all be so much better off if the right one is used.
Oddly, if people just used "complementary" as their default when talking about hockey, they'd be using the right one 90% of the time.
ReplyDeleteI agree; Jones is more of a compamentlary player to Horcoff.
ReplyDeleteMC,
ReplyDeleteDammit!
Good catch.
LT - A big part of the problem was the player who couldn't live up to the level of his contract. In a lot of cases, when a player and a team no longer want to work together (and it happens a lot), a trade is possible, but Souray's contract was impossible to trade or even to give away at half price.
ReplyDeleteSure, they could have brought him up to the NHL team, but they didn't want him there (and I don't think it was just because their feelings were hurt). Souray's contract (and his injury prone body) and Souray's own mouth have to be accorded with a fair bit of the blame in the situation.
I am not saying that the Oilers handled this perfectly, but I think a fair share of the blame in this situation falls on the player himself.
"Oddly, if people just used 'complementary' as their default when talking about hockey, they'd be using the right one 90% of the time."
ReplyDeleteExplain to me how that's "odd." It's not odd. The more frequent use of "complementary" is determined by the subject matter.
A basic rule of online commenting: When you criticize someone else's grammar or logic, you will undoubtedly include an error of your own.
So please point out the above mistake.
Really, Really Mc79? You lonely, lonely man.
ReplyDeleteTwo back to back games on the road I hope for two wins. Anything more is fantastic.
I find it odd that I've observed that people default to "complimentary" despite the fact that, if they defaulted to "complementary" in a hockey context, they'd have fewer mistakes.
ReplyDeleteOdd.
Language: any set or system of such symbols as used in a more or less uniform fashion by a number of people, who are thus enabled to communicate intelligibly with one another.
ReplyDeleteSpell: to name, write, or give the letters of words
The first one in Context helps and is usefull.
The other one is OCD semantics that allow Accountants, Lawyers, or any associted with contracts the ability to Fuck people over with Semantics even though the intended implied language was achieved.
What are the chances S.S. cross checks one of our golden boys across the face tonite. He is a genuinely mean, nasty and violent person when wearing a pair of skates. He also has an axe to grind against this team. I am a little nervous.
ReplyDeleteAnother rule of online commenting is:
ReplyDeleteDon't ever give Tyler Dellow an opportunity to argue with you. Similar to starting a land war in Asia. Those rules are almost complementary.
The Souray thing bugs me, because it seems the default fan opinion is the one that the management of the Oilers put out there (after he criticized them). I do think it was dumb of him to criticize the organisation, but only because in hindsight I realize how petty the team was in dealing with the guy - as was referenced on a recent Fan 960 show when they were talking about the things orbs like the Flames and Jets need to do to ensure they can sign FA's tomcome to their towns. And when you treat a player like Souray (who has a good rep among players, regaerdless of what Tambi would have us believe) the way you do, it is remembered and impacts future signings. Not to mention they had a better D in Hershey than most of whm was playing on their team last year.
The whole situation stunk, and a lot of it is on mgt for acting the way they did.
Final tonight is 5-3 Dallas w/ one empty netter to seal it.
mc79, posters can use whatever word they like, it's there choice. I know I won't loose any sleep over it...now can we get back to talking about a Ganger trade please, its an important topic......;)

ReplyDeleteKatz applied solid business decision making skills in banishing Souray to Hershey. Don't let past bad business decisions impact business in the future. Recognize the mistake and the loss and move on.
ReplyDeleteMc79 just shouted over the internet that he gets laid once every lunar eclipse
ReplyDeleteI have the same problem with Elementary and Alimentary.
ReplyDeleteIts really confusing when someone builds a school adjacent to a canal.
Believe it or not Joel, even guys with language skills that are such that they don't have to delete internet comments after they use the word "laided" get some attention from the ladies.
ReplyDeleteWhat are the chances S.S. cross checks one of our golden boys across the face tonite. He is a genuinely mean, nasty and violent person when wearing a pair of skates. He also has an axe to grind against this team. I am a little nervous.
ReplyDeleteWhile that is a very legitimate concern. If Souray's assignment is the kids, he's ending the night a minus. We all remember his mobility issues, I doubt it's gotten better over the last two years.
You don't beat Souray physically, you beat him with speed. And speed is something we actually have.
Jamie Benn played minor hockey where I played minor hockey years ago. I'm glad he's become the player he is now (and still improving). Hopefully he has an off night. :)
mc79, posters can use whatever word they like, it's there choice.
ReplyDeleteWhy would anyone choose to use the incorrect word?
Hey, wait a minute...Did you choose to use "there" instead of "their" in your post? Well played.
Souray should have a fun night tonight. Better tape down that jock strap really well. Eberle, Hemsky, Paajarvi are likely the RW'ers he will see bearing down on him on the blue line.
ReplyDeleteKatz applied solid business decision making skills in banishing Souray to Hershey. Don't let past bad business decisions impact business in the future. Recognize the mistake and the loss and move on.
ReplyDeleteThis is, at best, debatable.
They could have* lost him (or at least tried to lose him) on re-entry waivers before a game was played last year, which would have had a net cost of 4.5 mil.
Instead, they left him in the minors last season and bought him out this summer, at a cost of, I think, 7.5 mil.
In fact, one could argue the same with Brule this year, that they might be costing themselves ~900K by not having tried to lose Brule on re-entry waivers at the start of the year.
* We don't know that anyone would have claimed him on re-entry waivers in Sept/Oct 2010, but the OIlers never found out. My guess is someone would have, but I could easily be mistaken
mc79: Oddly, I think it's better to complement others rather than criticize.
ReplyDeleteThe other one is OCD semantics that allow Accountants, Lawyers, or any associted with contracts the ability to Fuck people over with Semantics even though the intended implied language was achieved.
ReplyDeleteI think you'll find that there's no magic language with most contracts - if the intended meaning is achieved with clarity, there won't be anything to dispute.
The litigation starts when something goes wrong, you read the contract to determine what to do next, and realize that you can't figure out what was intended (either because nobody thought about it in advance, or because the language isn't clear).
Brule helps the OKC team. The Oilers don't mind having him there** They want a good team there to develop prospects and to build a fan base.
ReplyDelete**Brule is a good guy. Even Bono said so.

ReplyDeleteRegarding business decision-making:
Katz has several billion. How many billions do you have?
Q.E.D.
Godoy, what makes you think Katz was involved in the decision (beyondbgiving his team's GM a budget)?
ReplyDeleteIs was a personal, not business decision (especially when the holes on the D last year are taken into account, and leaving out the lack of return on asset).
Hah. Don't ever apply for work as a logician godot10.
ReplyDeleteI'm sure Brule helps OKC, but does that mean it's worth the marginal 900K? I don't think so, I suppose someone could have a different opinion.
ReplyDeleteObviously it's no given that someone would have claimed him on re-entry waivers, but if they didn't, just send him down at that point.
Sorry, auto correct misspelled your name godot. My apologies.

That, sadly, is as much as I have gotten out of this semester of contracts. Make it estop.
My favorite spelling gaffe - doesn't that sound better than Pet Peeve? - is illustrated today by Bar Qu, where he uses the word 'ensure'.
ReplyDeleteCorrectly.

Carry on.
Hah. Don't ever apply for work as a logician godot10.
ReplyDeleteYeah, the job market for logicians really sucks right now, too. (I'm not joking.)
I'm bothered by the fact that when you go on a game show and lose, they give you what they call "a complimetary gift." They're paying you a compliment? It's more like: "you suck you loser." In my mind, it should be called "a complementary gift" because it comes along with just being on the show. That is, the fact that you get the gift is a complement to the fact that you are on the show.
Not recognizing a mistake, and realizing/cutting your loss is the illogical emotional decision.
ReplyDeleteRecognizing a mistake, and realizing/limiting the your loss is the logical business decision.
Randy Moss in Oakland was a disaster. Randy Moss in New England worked. But Belichek had Moss on a plane out of town soon after he began acting up.
Souray in an established environment and culture with a veteran core who controlled the room would probably be fine. But that was NOT the Oilers last year.
"Don't ever apply for work as a logician godot10."
ReplyDeleteSometimes people look a bit silly by not using commas when directly addressing someone.
Sorry. I'll stop now.
//Hah. Don't ever apply for work as a logician godot10.//

Ah fine with grammar, or lack thereof
ReplyDeleteLT I agree Tuebert had some bad early moments, but overall my impression walking out was that he had a much improved 3rd period. Seemed more effective at clearing the puck and positioning. Souray was available on waivers at the beginning of last season. Nobody wanted him at his salary, never mind an asset coming back.
ReplyDeleteHe was available for half price in February, nobody wanted him then either.
Neither the Oilers or Souray looked good in their dispute, to lay it all on the Oilers doesn't smell right.
Souray was available on waivers at the beginning of last season. Nobody wanted him at his salary, never mind an asset coming back.
ReplyDeleteNo, he wasn't.
Rapid fire:
ReplyDelete- love to bet on the Oil tonight but they are a horrendous road time. 3-5-1 flatters them because I've seen all of their road games outside of the win at Col and the only good one they played was the SO at LA. Check out their road SC's and you'll see what I'm talking about.
- holy christ, they're killing 91. Listen, I was one of the guys who said early last year I was worried about where his goals would come from because his shot wasn't that great and he didn't understand getting a better angle like say a 14 did. But he did some nice work late last season to finish. Now, he hasn't had two games where he's had two or perhaps even one good linemate to play with. You can't have 57 up with 10 and have 91 in the pressbox. That's just goddamn stupid.
- speaking of angles, nice to see 4 shooting a little more from the middle the other night. too many of his shots are off poor angles too close near to the boards.
- first year back in the city and was 21 and living with a 26 year old fellow who was one of those vagabond NFers who had worked everywhere; guy was also a musician and played a few pubs downtown. So, him and I would drink 18 beer apiece on a friday night before we even went to the clubs downtown. by the end of it the guy was chugging a bottle of mouthwash as we were waiting for the cab.
needless to say, the guy doesn't drink anymore

ReplyDeleteSo any word on lines?
ReplyDeleteElliot Freidman tweeting that Ryan Whitney may play tonight. Interesting. Hope he is actually ready.
ReplyDeleteSouray and Ott need to be watched tonight - warning to Hall! Expect the BIG open ice hit at the blue line.
ReplyDeleteKhabi again? Overplay the old timer and act surprised when his back gives out I suppose. DD will get his starts one way or another.
I think Friedman was referring to Crosby - that was a response to Whitney.
ReplyDeleteRe: Souray. Obviously he had to clear waivers to go down, I was thinking recall waivers.
Yeah Dennis, Renney does love him some Anton Lander. (Or he hates him some MPS.)
ReplyDelete---
If Hordichuk is in, and Belanger is centering the 4th line, how do they work that? Renney will need Belanger out there more than you'd want Hordichuk. (Or maybe Renney runs Hordichuk out for lots of minutes?) Do you cycle different wingers through Hordichuk's spot?
The latter might be a good idea irregardless. (I threw that in to piss off Tyler.) There are a lot of horses at wing and not enough icetime to run them all.
mc: right. heard it on team1260. looked and you are correct sir
ReplyDeleteHow could Whitney not know that Crosby is returning tonight? Does he not follow the NHL? Or was it a joke?
ReplyDeleteI gotta say I haven't been overly impressed with DD's play this year but I don't know that he deserves to sit this much.
ReplyDeleteI guess Oil feel this game is more winnable than tomorrow night at Nsh? that's how I read them playing DD at Bos and then NK at Det the next night a couple of weeks back.
They read that one wrong, BTW. Oilers would have had a better shot with Khabby in Bos because they were dead in det and nothing could save them. so maybe that's the thinking on this one. we're gonna be dead and/or shitty in nsh so let's try to get a win in the first hald
I get on YouTube and watch these seventies' bands and think man I wish I was in a 70s band and then I think if I were I'd be dead. Hmm.
ReplyDeleteEveryone all pissy after a 9-2 win over the best team in the league. Imagine if the expected had happened. The Interweb would be burning.
Not sure what the fuck the idea is with Paajarvi. He is a bit the author of his own misfortune but they need to give the kid a couple of decent linemates and let him play his way out of it.
Interesting to see Eager take a seat. Not a surprise though. He's not a good player but he's way better than he has shown. Someone was surmising that he may still be shaking off effects of that concussion. I would agree with that.
Whitney comes off as a pretty smart and sarcastic dude on Twitter, my guess us he was taking the piss about Crosby.
ReplyDeletePaajarvi HS but not sent down. I think he needs to trim those sideburns.
ReplyDeleteThe Oilers put Souray on reentry waivers before the trade deadline and he cleared:
ReplyDeletehttp://sports.espn.go.com/nhl/news/story?id=6144455
No-one wanted him, even with the Oilers paying half his salary. No-one thought he could help an NHL team win. Souray spent all of last season in Hershey because he played like a mediocre AHL defenceman, not because the Oilers were mean.
Where WERE you on Saturday Pat? You missed a fun night. Although I think Ellen was horrified at the humour of some of my doctor/lawyer friends.
ReplyDeleteAt the beggining of the seasons, Renney said something like he was asking everyone what sort of player they wanted to be. And one of the guys said something like "I'll be the sort of player that you want me to be." And Renney said he didn't like that answer.
ReplyDeleteI am now betting that it was MPS.
@mc79hockey
ReplyDeleteSo, July 3, 2010 is not before the start of last season?
Guess you're not perfect, neither am I.
Greg - See above, I already acknowledged I was thinking recall.
ReplyDeleteMy dick doesn't fit through the door either.
ReplyDeleteAssuming DD gets one start in back-to-backs is an assumption I'm no longer willing to make.
ReplyDeleteIf they do win tonight - Khabi won't be sitting tomorrow will he?
@mc79hockey
ReplyDeleteThanks for clarifying. I should have read before typing my response.
I know someone that INSISTS upon spelling the word "what" w-u-t (wut). This person is notorious for his constant spelling mistakes (he once spelled the word "stoned" with a "w") and grammatical errors and would apparently drive several people on this site insane. Just thought I would share.
ReplyDeleteMy prediction for tonight's game: Oilers lose 3-1; Souray picks up a point on the power play.
Some of my bolder predictions for tonight's game: Smythy, RNH, Hall, and Eberle are held pointless, Gilbert is burned with a minus-2, the Oilers' only goal is scored by either Jonesy or Horcoff, and either Hemsky or Smid is on the Injured Reserve by the end of the night (shoulder injury or concussion respectively).
God, I hope I didn't make any embarrassing spelling mistakes or grammatical errors myself!
Great thread today. No one in my office knows why I'm laughing so hard.
ReplyDeleteAnd to think there's actually a hockey game. Time for HBomb to give us one of his beverage concoctions and make the day complete.
word verification: aphole. Let's not go there on a Monday.
Pat, it's true, you did miss a good night, though I am sure it got better after I awkwardly left before the third.
ReplyDeleteTyler, which one was Ellen, and are we talking about "E" who writes theory of ice? If that's the case, I was sitting on the wrong side of the room...That woman can write!
Shepso - E is Ellen and she was on the other side of the room - the girls by me were my buddy's wife and my girlfriend.
ReplyDeleteShit...Yeah, I knew who the other two women were, having met your girlfriend at the Marlies game last fall and I was introduced to Ellen, but I totally didn't put it together. What can I say? I am oblivious.
ReplyDeleteIt was a good time though, thanks again for having us all over!
Ok, here's what everyone is thinking about Ty's party: did it devolve/evolve into swinging?
ReplyDeleteBecause if that happened then Pat's Really gonna be pissed.
Hard to say, Dennis. Like I said, I awkwardly left before the third. Anything is possible in a room filled with doctors and lawyers...
ReplyDeleteThe fighters and the one whose game enough to fight are in. Hordichuk and Petrell. Paajarvi and Eager out. Eager really isn't a fighter. He is really for maiming the other team's stars if they maim yours.
ReplyDeleteOtt will fight Hordichuk. He probably wouldn't fight Eager.
it will still be more of a "fight" than the Stortini incident from last year. Though I do miss Bruce's son from time to time, Hordichuk may actually fight someone if Ott or Souray run any of the kids. On the other hand, I am getting kinda sick of the "do we need an enforcer?" debate. It's one of the reasons why I rarely post anymore.
ReplyDeleteSchitzo: Tongue and Cheek. Dellows contribution by gleening blacked out court documents exceeds anything the Hockey MSM has done in the last 10 Years.

Gagner: I do not know! the thing that stands out is his skating was aproblem 5 years ago. The % of players who are fast has increased. Less TOI left to hide lack of Speed.
Ty - yeah bad timing is all, had a game at UCC at 10, by the time we got out the door it was closing on 11:30 so Higgins and I just hit a pub in the Annex, figured by the time I got to your place the game would have been almost over
ReplyDeleteSo instead I got really drunk. Good night. Had to be the cheapest place to get pints in Toronto, 4 and a quarter. Absolutely ridiculous.
Sorry I missed it though.
I blame Tyler for this thread.

And good for WG for trying to absolve the the entire committee of posters for their linguistic deficiencies. And it's not even Easter!
WG- Tyler -
ReplyDeleteI actually was not even aware of the complimentary - complementary thing which means that I have probable gotten it wrong myself. So, I fully support anyone who works to correct the ongoing stoopid mistakes people make on the interweb. Somebody has to learn these people about gramer so they stop looking like loosers.

ReplyDeleteI was at the Saturday wondergame - last minute tickets from my brother-in-law, bless his soul. Ninth row, dead centre ice (two rows directly above where the players walk out).
ReplyDeleteDuring the anthems, I was close enough to Joey that he was as loud as the girl singing over the PA. And, at that point, I was fairly certain that that would be the high point of the game for me, as I assumed that the Hawks would be out for blood after the game in CGY.
Four legs good, two legs bad.
ReplyDeleteOilers to go .500 or better on this 4 game trip.
@ Hunter
ReplyDeleteWhats with the constant Animal Farm reference? I'm guessing you are making some sort of obscure literary commentary on the group-think nature of this blogs comments?
I think it's a comment about how, with four "legs" of perception (eyes, ears, nose, tongue), we can "see" more than with just two "legs" of perception (eyes, ears).

ReplyDeleteTyler - yep, its pretty good on LT's site, I was referring to my undergrad student papers (really, even my grad student papers). Maybe its the high class of the crowd here at LT's place.
ReplyDeleteAlso, for the record, I don't hate Sheldon Sournay, nor do I bear him any ill will.
ReplyDeleteHowever, I do hope he scores a self goal tonight and breaks his hand doing so. In fact, I hope the same thing happens to the whole Dallas Stars team and the Oilers win by default with the score 18-0 and the Stars unable to put enough players on the ice to continue the game. They are conference rivals after all.
Apologies to anyone who feels there should be commas in that.
ReplyDeleteBookie....
ReplyDeleteDid I read that right? You are responsible for marking grad and undergrad papers and were unaware of the difference between complementary and complimentary till today? Wow. That's not exactly a resounding endorsement of our education system.
With regards to "idiot":
I thought an idiot was someone who refused to participate in democracy... Kind of like the countries Greece and Italy, and their new banking overlords. No?
;op
harsh
ReplyDelete@Bookie: I feel your pain. As I type this, I am looking at the large pile of undergraduate assignments for a research methods course that is sitting beside me. Often times I feel as though I am less of an educator and more of a glorified grammar nazi. That said, those of you who still reside in Alberta and have to do what we do for a living are lucky to a certain extent. I truly believe that Alberta's high school curriculum is superior to the curriculum Ontario. I have third and fourth year students who still can't figure out present tense vs. past tense.
ReplyDeleteTo return to hockey for a moment, I really would love to see an Oiler victory this evening. I have no ill will towards any player currently in the Dallas Stars organization and Eriksson and Lehtonen saved my fantasy team last year, but old hatred dies slowly.
hoses: based on the conversation above, these jokes write themselves.
I hope those new greek banking overlords don't screw up the world's spanakopita supply. I had some for supper on Saturday, it was better than the game.
ReplyDeleteAnd ditto on the responses Danny's idiot remark. Everyone was busy kissing and making up and Danny comes along and throws another log on the disputatious fire. Tsk Tsk.
MC79 is homophonesbic.
ReplyDeleteWell played Danny.
LT - Your typically stellar hockey blog is having a bad day. Let's hope the Oilers outperform Lowetide.com today. One would think it is a reasonable expectation.
ReplyDeleteLooks like I wasn't the only one to have a shitty Monday/weekend.
ReplyDeleteI need a drink.
SS: Are you or anyone from your firm coming to the non-Christmas party this Friday? It might be a fun chance to meet. Free food and drink (which is admittedly the real incentive to come).
Mr. D
ReplyDeleteI feel the same way about spanakopita, but haven't had the guts to try it since it became the spana-kop-outa.
Where is the designated enforcer for this thread?
ReplyDeleteHey, am I the only guy who pronounces they're, there and their differently? Maybe this is a holdover from when I was a kid and pronounced everything the way it was spelled (which made me great at spelling and beyond lousy at pronunciation), but I still do it somewhat to the day: Respectively, I would say thã-er, thare, and thir. Compleh vs. Complih.
ReplyDeleteIn fact, while complimentary and complementary are very very close in sound, I don't think they're exact homonyms. Certainly complement doesn't sound the same as compliment.
Oh and I have another cord of wood here if anyone needs it.
How about those Eskimos?
ReplyDeleteThat's not exactly a resounding endorsement of our education system.
ReplyDeleteShouldn't that be "educational system" or something?
Finance system vs. Financial system
???
---
There's a run of about the net 11 games versus average competition. (Then SJS and DET.)
If the Oilers can finish that run another two games over .500, what are the odds of making the playoffs?
Well, the game was on Ricky Ray to win it and he couldn't. Messams injury pretty much killed their chances.
ReplyDeleteThe BC game was a good reminder of why I hate Wally Buono so much. I was sure he didn't have the horses this year that he's used to and then all of a sudden he sprinkles his magic quarterback dust on to Travis Lulay and he's a top three guy in the league. Damn you, Buonnnno!! *shakes fists*
The Eskimos had a great year. There's no shame in this one. The only worry for next season has to be Messams recovery.
my view on souray: he was right to say what he said - or at least his opinion was right - but i guess he felt the message wasn't being heard so he took it public.
ReplyDeleteOilers had three kids debuting last year so Souray's badmouthing wouldn't have been a story past the last week of Sept if they'd mended fences.
Your eyes can glaze over because I've told this before but when Souray was up for UFA I mocked Habs fans thinking they'd overpay him. they didn't and we were stuck with the contract and I remember it was signed on a Thursday because I had softball that night and I was in a daze I was so disgusted.
Lots of folks seemed happy in the media because A: someone actually signed here and B: he was a local.
I preached about what kind of soft min he played in Mtl and about his injury history.
I'm having trouble understanding all the anger directed at a spelling correction. I'm happy to be corrected on pronunciation and spelling to prevent making the same mistake in the future and looking stupid for it. I think those who are getting all worked up are exposing their insecurities about their own spelling and intellect.
ReplyDeleteYou know, the post that seems to have inspired this thread was an extremely gentle push. Coupled with the post that followed it by the same author, you could argue it was one of the less inflammatory posts ever at this blog.
ReplyDeleteSo, I'm going to assume all who followed with comments were just pissy or didn't get enough hugs (and by hugs I mean sex) over the weekend.
Because this blog has seen a lot worse posted without a sniff from anyone.
I blame the Dallas Stars and that puke Mike Keane.
The next time I'm having a face to face conversation and the person I'm conversing with uses the word complimentary/complementary, I'm asking them how they're intending it.
ReplyDeleteCan't wait to see what the English language and Miriam's look like after 25 years history of text messaging.
If Christina Hendricks schmeebs were named Benn and Eriksson I wonder if they'd look as good together?
I blame the French.
ReplyDeleteAnd the English. Laforge, too
Bookie, what's this thing you left behind in the hall? Those kids with the moving van are trying to get it down the stairs....
actually i think there was more overreacting to the people that reacted. I admittedly skipped most of the posts so i may have missed some haters sprinkled throughout.
ReplyDeleteI think my reply was probably the harshest, and that was a joke around the obvious irony of calling someone an idiot for mispelling a word :)
Granted, I just finished a 4 day marathon at the office, working through the weekend with 2 or 3 am mornings. Listneing to account execs ask why are there arent any periods on that billboard ad.
My humor may be a little obtuse tonight.
The best thing is, now we know that unless the Oilers are winning the first period, we can get up from our chairs, and walk over to and turn off the television set.
ReplyDeleteI think my reply was probably the harshest, and that was a joke around the obvious irony of calling someone an idiot for mispelling a word :)
ReplyDeleteThis comment brought to you by the CBC crew that identifies irony and tells the boys in the booth to point it out.
We're thinking about purchasing an Electrohome model colour TV for Christmas, with a 25" screen.
ReplyDeleteThis comment brought to you by the CBC crew that identifies irony and tells the boys in the booth to point it out.
ReplyDeleteCan you describe it more in Gene Principe terms? Just want to make sure I'm following you correctly here.
hunter - Was the store all out of Panaphonic, Magnetbox, Carnivale, and Sorny, TVs?
ReplyDeletehunter: Is it Hi-Fi?
ReplyDeleteIs the HNIC broadcast between PIT and NYI solely due to Crosbys return?
ReplyDeleteHow many hockey players can lay claim to that accolade?
They're speaking about him as if he returned from the grave.
ReplyDelete1 goal, 1 assist. 7 minutes for Crosby in 1st period. wow. guess he is good.
ReplyDeleteMy vote - great series of posts. Enjoyed them immensely. Bright people's snark is the best. The difference between Heaven and Hell is the company you keep.

ReplyDeleteThen I need to revise my religion classes. ;-)
Ribs: I loved that:)
ReplyDeleteTo be fair to Danny, he's not used to the Oilers winning a few games so cut him some slack will you!!
Speaking of spelling - does anyone else out there HATE lower de
ReplyDeleteI see that 1st overall pick slowly slipping away and it really puts a burr in my saddle. Things were looking so good leading up to that Chicago game. Glad I couldn't watch it. That would have sucked donkey balls.
ReplyDeleteYeti - Thanks, it's detachable .

ReplyDelete...but could I be the first in line to complement book¡e on his penis.
ReplyDeleteI'd wager you're a few years late for that, my abominable friend.

ReplyDeleteDoes any one have a link to a stream of the game?
ReplyDeleteGuys!! I invented the PERFECT nickname:
ReplyDeleteRYAN OWNAGE'NT-HOPKINS!
Say it out loud! Pronounced "Ryan Ownage-ent Hopkins"
Ryan Ownage'nt-Hopkins!! Rolls right off the tongue.
My view on the whole Souray debacle is all about a selfish hockey player wanting his way.
ReplyDeleteI believe Souray is a proud man and he is also a good team guy and a leader. I however think he looked around the dressing room with the rebuild already starting and he thought ... Hmmm ... I have 3-4 years left, I don't fit the timeline, this team is going nowhere fast.
After some thought, he makes the decision he wants out. The story comes out that he would be open to a trade if it improves the team, etc. etc.
The truth there, was in private he requested a trade and he wanted out.
The next event was Tambo being Tambo and the trade takes forever. So much so that Souray gets impatient. So impatient he got desperate and went public with the injury comments. Were they true ? of course there must have been some truth there somewhere, but he wanted out bad, real bad.
And thus he figured burning the bridges was the quickest way out of town. Except, he didn't realize the boat anchor contract with injury risk he was pulling around.
Just my thoughts.
My favorite from the Code of the West

ReplyDeleteI blame the Dallas Stars and that puke Mike Keane.
I'll drink to that. That guy is best described by a word that rhymes with "runt".
Seeing the old orange and blue homes vs the Stars just brought back memories of the late 90s
ReplyDeleteAnyone aware of a link that would allow me to watch this game state-side?
ReplyDeleteThe guy from "king of Queens" bought the Stars?
ReplyDeleteMy peeve is anyone who drops crumpled pieces of aluminum foil into any Bromine-based solution.
ReplyDeleteMakes my skin crawl just thinking about it.
D-Vo on the stars? Boo.
ReplyDeleteStill remember that goal where he split the Dallas defense and scored the game winner with a wrister in the playoffs.
Since Souray was a free agent signing who actually signed with the Oilers. It's very likely that nobody wanted a Souray that cost that sort of money. Therefore, it took forever and a day to trade the guy.
ReplyDeleteThe guy was a dink.
firstrowsports.tv is my go-to now
ReplyDeletemax the screen and you won't get the ads. been good this year so far.
Swarmy,
ReplyDeleteExactly. Athletes don't often see their real value (actually do any of us) with respect to salary cap hit and being injury prone.
Trading him would not be easy.
old oilers. you can only laugh.
ReplyDeleteHall dropping his stick, then picking it up like a magician and clearing the zone is the thing that only the Sakic level and better players ever do.
ReplyDeleteDid anyone else see it?
Dallas Stars, still my least favorite team after all these years.
ReplyDeleteYou can only hope to contain him.
ReplyDeleteand now for a souray goal from the PP
ReplyDeleteMy pet peeve?
ReplyDeleteDiet Cokes overreaction.
weak goal followed by a weak penalty
ReplyDeleteBrilliant satire, Clarkenstein.
ReplyDeleteLooks like RNH knocked out Morrow with one of those patented RNH vicious hits.
ReplyDeleteThe guy is a killer, plain and simple.
ok seriously. 2 goals and 2 assists for crosby. I know it's the islanders, but seriously.

two posts already
ReplyDeleteThat 83-89 passing sequence was ridiculous.
ReplyDeleteHemsky went off quick after that hit in the corner...
ReplyDeleteThere's nothing wrong with this team that a 2006 version of Chris Pronger couldn't fix.
ReplyDeleteThanks Alice. Works great.

That was something you don't hear often, Hordichuk saying he needs to start running their skill players so they calm down against ours.
ReplyDeleteKeep your head up Anton!
ReplyDeleteThis feels like the 72 Canada vs Russia. And we got Horcov.
ReplyDeleteStars must not know Hordichuk is playing, they're running our show!
ReplyDeleteYou gotta be kidding me.
ReplyDeleteIt's 2-0 and Dallas is the better team, but the rookie defensemen are being rookie defensemen and that's costing us.
ReplyDeleteEdmonton just can't cover down low. Need another star D-man.
ReplyDeleteCan we ask how the fuck Smytt's didn't go in?
ReplyDeleteAs of.
And is this show running? I can't tell.
I don't want to be that guy, but how about a shot or two on all these odd man rushes?
ReplyDeleteSmyth missing from 1 inch!
ReplyDeleteHas Peckman looked better the last couple of games? Seems like he has been making better decisions of late, but I don't have any numbers to check.
ReplyDeleteBar Qu: He has by my eye too. Chorney and Teubert need to go back to OKC, though.
ReplyDeletePeckman looks slightly better, but still bad.
ReplyDeleteWhen do we score the 9 goals?
Well hopefully Peckman can go back to be the relialble bottom pairing guy he was last year. He's too likable a person to wish ill on.
ReplyDeleteWhat's the over under on Hemsky's shoulder completely separating from his body?
Packman still looks pretty slow and lethargic. Not Cam Barker territory, but close.
ReplyDeletesick hands
ReplyDeleteWOW.
ReplyDeleteRNH is amazing
What the christ is this kid on? Sweet jesus.
ReplyDeleteDamn that RNH ... he's like gumby or something ... how did he get that shot off ?
ReplyDeleteRenney seems fine running 57-10-28 against Fiddler's line (DAL's 3rd/checking line)
ReplyDeleteThat's not giving 89 or 93's lines very easy ice.
I bet Stauffer's face is quite purple with all the show running that's going on.
Oil are pushing back as much as they can, but some of this is on Renney for letting DAL dictate match ups.
That 93 kid is ok with the puck.
Larsson would have scored that goal twice.
ReplyDeleteNuuuuuge!
