G3 11-12 Canucks at Oilers

Ales Hemsky. He's like that fancy sports car you own as a young man: looks terrific, but breaks down daily and costs four paydays to repair. Every time you say it's not worth it, the sun comes out, it fires up and your blue moon turns to gold again.

Ales Hemsky. If the Oilers don't sign him, he'll go to Detroit for 2M a year, win 6 Stanley's and end up in the HHOF. Ales Hemsky. If the Oilers do sign him, it'll be Rick DiPietro 2.0 and we'll see 8 to 40 games a year until my teeth fall out.
Tell me I'm wrong. I dare you.

Oilers have 3 points so far in 2 games and a 2-2 in GF/GA. The average NHL team has played 3 games and is 8-8 in GF-GA (this was before last night's game). So, tonight will be a 5-5 tied decided in a shootout.

Last year, Edmonton started the season 2-0 and then lost six games in a row. I think the coaching staff is reasonably pleased with the start but would like to win tonight. We'll know if they're serious if we see:
  • line matching that gives the soft parade to the kid line
  • the continued quick change pk that boasts 6 forwards at close to 2 minutes or more per game (Horcoff, Belanger, Jones, Paajarvi, Smyth & Lander).
  • the strong play of the forwards
  • quality starts from the goalies
The PP and the blue could use some work, there's chaos often when it comes to moving the puck up via the headman pass. I'm looking forward to Tyler's numbers after a few games, and Dennis King's scoring chances are already showing interesting results (Peckham's on ice results at evs: 9-11 against what to my eye looks like some tough minutes versus people like Koivi) compared to what the eyes tell us (Teddy Peckman hasn't looked good all fall).

Anyway, it's fun to have another game so close after the last one, it feels like hockey season. Beauty. Now if we could just get the Czech Kaipan out on the highway and take it to the limit.

Nation Radio is back on the air today, noontime on Team 1260. We'll preview tonight's HNIC game and read your comments at nationradio@theteam1260.com Scheduled to appear:
  • Jim Byers from the Oklahoma City Barons. OKC's play by play guy will join us again this season and pass along the latest from the farm. I'll ask about Pitlick, Hamilton, Hartikainen and any questions you send me.
  • Tyler Dellow from mc79 hockey. Tyler is already tearing up the blacktop this season, and we'll touch base on his "open source" research and his recent article on Ales Hemsky.
  • Jeff Angus from dobber hockey and Canucks Army. He'll help me preview the Canucks-Oilers and give us an idea about the early struggles Vancouver has been suffering this season. If we have time, I'll ask him about some of the prospects the Canucks fans are excited about moving forward.
  • Jonathan Willis from pretty much everywhere. Jon is like Eric Clapton in the olden days. Maybe he'd show up in Traffic or perhaps Cream, but maybe he was just playing all night long with Duane Allman and jamming out Derek and the Dominos numbers. I'll ask Jonathan about his whereabouts this week and ask him to chime in on the Oilers early season success.
  • David Staples from the EJ has been requested but at this writing is not confirmed. I do know that David has been on the Katz-City of Edmonton story for many hours and we may not get him. But I'm hopeful.
Hope you can tune in.

  1. I would love nothing more than to tell you that you are wrong about Hemsky, but you are not...

  2. Ales Hemsky is no longer an actual NHL player. You need to actually play NHL games to qualify.

I don't want to hear anymore talk about his great 5x5 Pts/60 either. It's a meaningless indicator when coupled with his 5x5 Pts/Season.

  3. Ales Hemsky. If the Oilers don't sign him, he'll go to Detroit for 2M a year, win 6 Stanley's and end up in the HHOF.

It's not fun, but I think at this point the most likely scenario is that he signs somewhere for 2 years at medium money, gets hurt again in both seasons, and retires.

It sucks. I really wish he'd been built to play hockey.

    ReplyDelete
  4. Is it confirmed Hemsky is for sure out tonight? Because this:

    Hall-RNH-Eberle
    Smyth-Horcoff-Hemsky
    Paajarvi-Lander-Omark
    Petrell-Belanger-Jones

Looks a HECK of a lot better than this:

    Hall-RNH-Eberle
    Smyth-Horcoff-Jones
    Paajarvi-Belanger-Omark
    Petrell-Lander-Hordichuk

First in-person attendance game of the regular season tonight. There's always something special about a Saturday night game, especially when a hated rival is the opposition.

Oh, and I'll be wearing a "Boston Bruins, 2011 Stanley Cup Champions" hat for no apparent reason.

    F*ck the Nucks, Go Oil.

darughti - Drew Doughty in an offensive slump.

  5. Everything's relative. Imagine discussing Hemsky's health/ability to play games in the setting of him having been freshly signed to a 6 year 39M contract extension, with still a year on the previous deal. Has a bullet been dodged?

  6. Did I miss something?

Or is everyone flipping out with a sore shoulder and an MRI?

  7. From Terry Jones, who clearly doesn't get the new math, and can't be bothered to check the old math:

With about $200 billion over five years and we want $100 million, that’s about .0001%. Or is it .00001%," said the mayor.

Dude, 100m/200b is 0.05% It's a fairly deep scratch in the financial paint, but probably not lethal.

100m/0.0001% fantasizes provincial government revenues (if that's what he meant) at 100 trillion dollars (over five years, it seems).

The total stock market capitalization of the whole planet is hovering around $50 trillion these days.

Or maybe the mayor meant 1000 trillion, using his other number with the extra zero.

Never let it be said that Terry Jones abuses his slide rule when he's flush with enthusiasm.

  8. Just for fun, go to the Canucks website, click on 'Standings'. They are still showing last years standings. I guess they prefer those to this years standings.

  9. Did I miss something?

Or is everyone flipping out with a sore shoulder and an MRI?

That's just it. Nothing happened and the guy had to leave the game. He can't take hits or any of the normal stuff that happens in the NHL with a shoulder made of wet cardboard.

I wouldn't resign him and he's gonna be hard to trade for a good return with the injury risk.

Tambo v4.5782 won't resign him and nobody should complain. (Unless they could have him for less the 2.5 a season)

    ReplyDelete
  10. Havlat used to be made of cardboard, still logged his last 3 seasons almost to completion.

    ReplyDelete
  11. Wow, there sure has been lots of end of the world moments for two games of hockey...

    We're all doomed!

    *puts on hurtin cowboy music*

    ReplyDelete
  12. Hemsky is one case where Tambellini's "patience" should be an asset. Shoulders (or any ligaments) take a while to heal. Waiting most of the season should let him know from the doctors how strong it is. We lack information and freak out over soreness. Maybe that's normal?

LT, your bit on Hemsky was a beauty. Happy man day everyone.. go esks! go oilers!

    ReplyDelete
  13. Hemsky's a Fiat. A joy to drive, but most of the time always in the repair shop.

Must win game tonight, as Canucks expect to breeze in and out with the points. Omark gets big chance to shine, as does MPS.

LOL at everyone whining about Hall so far; 2 games in with a 1-0-1 record.

    ReplyDelete
  14. LT: You're not wrong, more's the pity. Such is the dilemma of Ales Hemsky.

re: Jim Byers, could you inquire about Teubert and Plante? Thanks.

    ReplyDelete
  15. Scott Oake will interview RNH tonight. This could be famous.

    ReplyDelete
  16. I don't want to hear anymore talk about his great 5x5 Pts/60 either. It's a meaningless indicator when coupled with his 5x5 Pts/Season.

Thank you. Thank you. Thank you.

@FPV, I think you'll find the Havlat stories are not the norm in professional sports. When athletes start to demonstrate chronic injury problems, it typically worsens until eventual retirement. You could make a case for Hemsky if his injuries were relatively dispersed, but the fact that his shoulders appear problematic lends credence to the diagnosis of silica instabilis (i.e. made of glass).

    ReplyDelete
  17. Lee: Yeah. But if we don't find a fish that will pay good money for it, might as well wait.

If we get crap like a 3rd rounder for him, we won't get much more, neither the chance of recover.

    (Williams, Cole etc)

    ReplyDelete
  18. it took me awhile to warm up to him but Oake's my favourite HNIC guy at this point. Friedman's good too and I used to love Ron but I can't get past the way he acts on battle of the blades.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Slopitch has maybe had a shoulder injury and that's why he isn't so worried?

Personally, it looks like if a guy had surgery in the offseason and two games in he's hanging his arm already then the shoulder's probably really irreparable.

Or at least useless in the sense of professional athletic ability.

    ReplyDelete
  20. I haven't seen Battle of the Blades but imo McLean can still rip off a good interview when he's outside the Cherry Hill Mob.

Agreed on Oake. He's a national treasure.

Lets put it a different way for you then fpb. We'll trade you Hemsky for Markov.

  22. hunter1909 said...LOL at everyone whining about Hall so far; 2 games in with a 1-0-1 record.

No whining. Just the reality that he's still the undisputed second..oh wait, maybe third...best forward taken in the 2010 draft.

Maybe Renney can pass the hat around the locker room tonight so Hemsky can have more than just a stationary bike in his workout room.

    ReplyDelete
  23. LT, just a note I thought I'd pass along from a Twitter conversation I had with Uffe Bodin, editor in-chief for hockeysvierge.se regarding the status of Klefbom:

@atkinsgreg: "any idea why Klefbom hasn't been playing for FBK? Is he too far down the depth chart, or is he injured? "

@uffebodin: "He had a lot of injuries during the preseason, got cut by a skate in the thigh among other things. Not sure if he has recovered."

@uffebodin: "I talked to some reporters in Karlstad, where Klefbom plays. Apparently, he's healthy, but unable to crack the lineup right now."

@atkinsgreg: "thanks. It also looks as though he has been playing for the FBK J20 team according to eliteprospects.com"

@uffebodin: "Yeah, according to a reporter I spoke to, he's been dominant down there."

While the injuries are old news, the fact that he's playing, and 'dominating' the Swedish J20 league is a positive sign. According to stats.swehockey.se, he's played 8 games, recorded 1 assist and 27 shots, and is -3 on a poor FBK team.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Wait, what? Klefbom is playing for two teams? Somebody better let Tambellini know about this. He seemed oblivious on the radio yesterday.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Must win game tonight, as Canucks expect to breeze in and out with the points.

    Must win...heehee.

  26. Lineups per Tencer...He's corrected them once already...

    Hordichuk-Lander-Petrell

    Smid-Gilbert
    Sutton-Potter
    Barker-Peckham

  27. Enjoying the radio program this afternoon LT. If time allows, can you ask your Canucks' guest one of the following?

    1) How do Canuck fans feel about the club's growing reputation as the 'most hated team' in the NHL?

    2) Why are Canucks' fans SO obsessed with Luongo? Is it possible this fan obsession is actually having a detrimental impact on the performance of this particular player?

    ReplyDelete
  28. Lee I agree with you on the Canucks fans and their continued obsession with Luongo's pay. I live here in BC and the way fans talk here, I doubt Luongo will remain a Canuck for longer than 3 years. He'll simply grow tired of all the negative talk and BS put forth by the media and the fans.

    ReplyDelete
  29. As per Tychkowski's twitter:

Hemsky says shoulder "is fine, just a little sore. Labrum is fine."

    Yay!

    Also,

I bet on Oilers/Dys 4 times last year. Twice on Oilers, twice on Dys.

    I lost every time.

Tonight I bet on the Dys.

    Oilers 4-2.

    Book it!!

    Go Oilers!!!

    ReplyDelete
  30. It IS a must-win game tonight. The playoffs started two games ago today, non-sports players. Points = Points. These fuckers don't want to lose as much as the franchise does.

you can statulize all you want. If 94 is in the line-up(he has the orb), they'll try to win.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Thanks LT! Appreciate the questions and really enjoying the show. Great diversity of topics.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Smid-Gilbert
    Sutton-Potter
    Barker-Peckham

    Random comments:

    - a little bit of toughness on each pairing with Smid, Sutton, and Peckham throughout. Perhaps Renney preparing for a tough Canuck lineup taking liberties against the rookie line?
    - That second pairing is going to be slow. Like, really slow. I will be interested to look at their zone starts after the game. Does Renney think they are a risk to start in the Ozone, due to their lack of footspeed? Does Renney trust them enough to start more in the Dzone? A dilemma, but not an unpredictable one with the Oilers' depth on D. Sigh.
    - Barker is moving his way down the lineup already and we've only played 2 games of regular season hockey. Oops?

    ReplyDelete
  33. So 58's taking the collar for that up the middle pass the other night, is he?

Looking at that lineup without 6-83-89 is just like looking at more of the same injury-prone orders.

It's nice to watch the kids when they're playing well. But when they're not you're just hit with the realization that a lot of it is due to inexperience and then you start thinking about who's missing.

    ReplyDelete
  34. 2) Why are Canucks' fans SO obsessed with Luongo? Is it possible this fan obsession is actually having a detrimental impact on the performance of this particular player?

Oiler fans would never get down on a player in that way.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Apparently Dennis.

I'm surprised to see Petry sit given that he's a natural rhd and one of the few Oilers d capable of moving the puck. At least Smid/Peckman have been split up.

Looks like Whitney isn't playing after all despite something I read on Twitter from Gene Principe yesterday.

As for Hemsky, one could argue that he makes poor decisions in certain situations--those with a relatively low percentage chance of creating offence vs. a high percentage chance of just getting flattened. Any player who makes that bad bet repeatedly probably won't have an injury free career.

Others will just comment on how he plays in the tough areas.

    ReplyDelete
  36. LT- 8 to 40 games is worth it compared to the lowball offers that will be coming back. I think he'll play more than that anyway based on the same projections for the future that everyone else has. Do not trade Ales Hemsky. I'll happily pay Harry Mudd for a team of Diane Lanes to take care of your teeth if you just make the trade not happen.

...also a shot and running stats for The Gernat might look good below The Klefbom. I can't see Oil Kings games, does this kid look as good as his stats?

    ReplyDelete
  37. @Henry: Saw Gernat last night for the first time. He looked just like you'd expect a 6'5 teenager to look after sitting on a bus for a week.

PS: I'll have a write-up on Gernat (& Davidson) on Cult of Hockey soon.

    ReplyDelete
  38. @Ryan from the Oilers: Maybe you should take a number like all the other Ryans from the Oilers. Last I checked they had just given out Ryan 93 and Ryan 94 so is it all right if we call you Ryan 95?

I'm with you on the splitting up of Smid and Peckham. Those guys were a disaster together anytime they got paired up last year - hell, a brief pairing during achange on the fly would be enough for the puck to wind up in the back of our net some nights. Smid in particular is ill-suited to having a(norther) plumber for a partner. Glad to see him back with Gilbert, that is a pairing I was projecting way back in 2006-07 when both were rookies. Nice complementary skill sets.

As for Barker-Peckham, all I can say is egads.

Potter for Petry is likely a seniority thing as much as anything. The other five guys all have more NHL experience, so interchange the (near-)rooks.

Will be interesting to see ice time at the end of the night.

    ReplyDelete
  39. So Columbus has an interest in Omark huh? David Savard gets it done. Thank you very much.

    ReplyDelete
  40. That pass from Petry up the middle last game was almost as nice as #10's sweet pass into the slot to a Wild player, in his own end. So me thinks there must be more to it.

    ReplyDelete
  41. OKC up 2 goals in their home opener. I think Pitlick might like pro hockey.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Another goal in OKC, 3 goals in 1:27.
    Gotta like seeing that.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Todd Nelson sure righted that ship quickly.

    ReplyDelete
  44. Pitlick with a goal, yeehah.

    Piling on, rats.

    ReplyDelete
  45. Now 8-0. Pitlick scores his first professional goal.

    ReplyDelete
  46. @Lowetide Tell me I'm wrong. I dare you.

At this point I almost hit the "Report Abuse" link on the top of the screen.

    ReplyDelete
  47. Teubert with a goal and an assist, plus he's +4. 9-0 OKC.

    ReplyDelete
  48. Calgary looks good this season. Good for them, they're terrific!

    ReplyDelete
  49. Did I just hear Hughson right? 5 goals for Kessel? I've been watching the Esks try to blow a lead.

    ReplyDelete
  50. 5 goals on the seaosn, including a couple tonight. One of the goals was exceptional, an absolute killer.

    ReplyDelete
  51. That Duchene kid's a beauty-shootout winner for the Avs.

    ReplyDelete
  52. OKC wins 9-0...

And they lost their opener 7-0.

    What in the world...?

    ReplyDelete
  53. LT:

''You're hot then you're cold, you're yes then you're no''

    OKC = Katy Perry's boyfriend.

    ReplyDelete
  54. FPV: if that's true, I'd call that a successful season!

    ReplyDelete
  55. Yes, but it only applies to the Oilers farm teams. I don't know what happens it the other team is getting trampled.

    ReplyDelete
  56. I believe its one goal after 3 periods.

    ReplyDelete
  57. This PK defies any logic.

You don't pressure Henrik FFS. He can't score from outside 5 feet. You don't care if he takes a weak outside shot. Survey Burrows who's alone and a 30 goal scorer in front of the net.

    ReplyDelete
  58. It would've been if he hadn't watched his giveaway go the other way for 2 full seconds.

    ReplyDelete
  59. bout time they call that. Nucks get away with interefernce all the time.

    ReplyDelete
  60. Eberle looks too good to be an Oiler defenseman.

    ReplyDelete
  61. an over-reliance on 57 on the PK. I know the goal came because 25 was playing pinball with his foot but 20-57 were the first PK tandem, then 10-91 and then instead of going say 28-37, they bring back 57.

Hamilton hurt or an early HS

    ReplyDelete
  62. Horcoff should see 00:00 a night on the PP. Cmon Renney.

    ReplyDelete
  63. Thank god he's not a goal scorer.

I think they must've found Eberle on Mt. Olympus.

    ReplyDelete
  64. Danny: hilarious.

In seriousness, RNH does bring a lot of movement to the PP. Much less static with him out there.

    ReplyDelete
  65. Can the Oilers request this ref all the time? Love that he's calling all the pick plays and interference that Van runs.

    ReplyDelete
  66. You fucking guys. All talk about RNH but not one damn post about Hordichuk and his shutting down both Sedins, Bure and Bobby Schmautz.

    ReplyDelete
  67. Maybe we should move Eberle back to defense until Whitney returns?

    ReplyDelete
  68. The Sedins can't be intimidated. By anyone. Even Hordichuk.

    ReplyDelete
  69. Has Gilbert played 25 minutes of this period?

    ReplyDelete
  70. Hordichuk is out for the night but is working on mind control from the dressing room. Sedins have no chance. No chance.

    ReplyDelete
  71. Maybe next year we should draft a goal-scorer instead.

    ReplyDelete
  72. A few more goals and is goal/assist ratio may even become respectable

    ReplyDelete
  73. Time for The Nuge to find a place for the season in Edmonton.

    ReplyDelete
  74. I don`t know you guys. He hasn`t gotten an assist yet.

    ReplyDelete
  75. So much for his vaunted vision and creativity. Some playmaker he turned out to be.

    ReplyDelete
  76. While it's great, he's shooting about 60% right now.

I still expect his numbers to shift the other way.

    ReplyDelete
  77. 2-1 LMAO

This is going to be a great team soon.

    ReplyDelete
  78. RNH is pretty good hey?

Bizzaro world where RNH is scoring the goals and Hall and Ebs are getting the apples.

    ReplyDelete
  79. Going into the season there were a few things that seemed clear.

    1. The pp would be awesome
    2. goalscoring would not be a problem
    3. goaltending was likely tO be shaky
    4. The PK was going to be a problem
    5. Ryan Smyth was sure to be a solid veteran leader and teach the kids how to avoid stupid penalties
    6. RNH was likely going to take some time to adjust to the NHL game.

    Book it!

    ReplyDelete
  80. I'm really starting to worry about his playmaking skills. Bust?

    ReplyDelete
  81. great job by Hall gaining control on the faceoff on the 2nd goal

    ReplyDelete
  82. Beautiful tip by RNH, and a fantastic play by Gilbert that no doubt will be forgotten by the fans who think he sucks!

    ReplyDelete
  83. Does it really bother you guys so much that there are fans that don't like Gilbert?

    ReplyDelete
  84. Nobody thinks Gilbert sucks on offense. Only on defense, and he's been better so far this year.

    ReplyDelete
  85. I'm concerned about RNH's goal and assist ration. He's only on pace for 82 goals this season. Where are the assists?

    ReplyDelete
  86. Smarmy: Well, it is kind of a trend in Edmonton going way back. If you have teeth and play defense, you're not welcome in Edmonton. It's ridiculous.

    ReplyDelete
  87. Great little play by Eberle to set up the second goal. Beauty.

    ReplyDelete
  88. Sutter looked hammered.

Is that windows pop up supposed to be covering the Chevrolet logo?

    ReplyDelete
  89. I have to say this version of the Oilers is so much easier to watch than last years. The special teams look like they know what they are doing. The goalie is better and Foster and Strudwick are gone.

    ReplyDelete
  90. Eberle might very well have the best career out of everyone on the Oilers. He's got the poise of Mike Bossy.

    ReplyDelete
  91. Too cutesy. And Shooter Magee trying to share the wealth, but of course blows the pass.

    ReplyDelete
  92. Eberle's brain is so big I don't knoe how he gets it in his helmet.

The right place, the right play at the right time, every time.

    Scary.

Its hard to tell what RNH's ceiling is, wow.

    ReplyDelete
  93. I'm guessing Potter might pass Peckham during the year, unless Peckham gets way better.

    ReplyDelete
  94. Helluva compliment to Lander to have him out there, despite the goal.

    ReplyDelete
  95. Geez tough on the goalie when the puck bounces like that.

    ReplyDelete
  96. Burrows knocked DD out of position there. He had time to recover but looked at the ref or something.

    ReplyDelete
  97. Don't think we can blame the goalie on either goal. Correct?

    ReplyDelete
  98. Just how bad is 20's back because why is Lander taking the PK draw instead of Belanger

    ReplyDelete
  99. Wow, did MPS ever close the gap quickly there to avoid the 2 on 1.

    2 strides and caught him.

    ReplyDelete
  100. I'm not going to fault the goalie on that 5-3. He was under seige. I mean sure Roloson would have had it in that Detriot series and maybe Hashek would have but mortal goalies give up goals there.

    ReplyDelete
  101. Teddy Peckman looks like he wants to vote himself into the press box when Whitney comes back.

    ReplyDelete
  102. Damn I am gonna enjoy watching these kids for the next decade.

    ReplyDelete
  103. Who's Petrol?

Although now that I think about it it would be a decent OIler nickname...

    ReplyDelete
  104. Question - If Stortini had been a defenseman, would he be more or less popular than Gilbert?

    ReplyDelete
  105. The Smyth, MPS, Omark power play unit doesn't seem to work well.

    ReplyDelete
  106. If Sortini had been a defenseman he'd be Theo Peckham.

    ReplyDelete
  107. I have to say Sutton looks surprisingly less bad than i expected.

    ReplyDelete
  108. The Canucks look lost without Kesler.

Teddy Peckham looks like a pig in a bowling alley out there.

Is that the pukey Luuuuuuuu cheer I hear out there?

    ReplyDelete
  109. 77 has been massive so far this season, but he still doesn't intimidate Daniel or Henrik.

    ReplyDelete
  110. so, 20 is out of the game as well.

honest to jesus, a 27 year old cal ripken jr would join this club and he'd play 70 games in two seasons combined.

    ReplyDelete
  111. Our powerplay is awesome? It's so strange.

    ReplyDelete
  112. The Nuge is going after the Seleane record.

    ReplyDelete
  113. Ok Rexall, everyone needs to start yelling PASS.

    ReplyDelete
  114. If Hall doesn't score soon he may need to retire.

Great game for the kids - why didn't they put them together sooner?

    ;-)

    ReplyDelete
  115. Never saw a delayed hat-trick hat shower before.

    ReplyDelete
  116. i think that is Hall's goal but he'll never claim it. Man.

    ReplyDelete
  117. The announcers keep talking about a confirmation line in the net and thinner mesh: is there no ETA on that? Might've saved some time tonight.

    ReplyDelete
  118. So FPV did we need to draft a big slow Quebecker because RNH can't score?

    ReplyDelete
  119. Do they not realize there are Vancouver fans there too?

    ReplyDelete
  120. Now there's an actual deterrent to getting dirty on your stars.

    ReplyDelete
  121. Not one Forward moved to give Potter an option there.

    ReplyDelete
  122. Chris: Wait and see.

But I might have been too harsh on RNH. Still placed him 5th on my list.

    Big slow Quebecer's a big time PK'er at 18.

Let's not get into a debate with the euphoria around this.

No one (even me) will be reasonable about this.

    Just enjoy the game.

  123. One trend I am liking this year is the Oilers are outshooting the opposition in all the games so far (I think).

    ReplyDelete
  124. LT:

I don't know if it really matters if Hall claims it, I would imagine the league would review it anyways.

Besides that, if you were RNH, would you really want your first hat trick tainted by not having really deserved it?

    ReplyDelete
  125. Regardless, RNH is definitely Buzz Lightyear to Hall's Woody the Cowboy.

Fun game, if even if the Canucks refuse to throw in the tool yet.

    bilated - late twice

  126. Hard not to pin that goal on Horcoff, but off the draw Sutton was busy holding his hands in the air to argue a penalty call that wasn't forthcoming. That put him a step behind Sedin as he went behind the net. All in all, terrible sequence by our veterans there.

    ReplyDelete
  127. We need one of the other lines to generate a goal. MPS and Omark are pointless thus far.

    ReplyDelete
  128. speeds: Yeah, agreed. Although there used to be bonuses based on specific numbers. One year Eddie Shack took a Derek Sanderson goal to get a 20-goal bonus, and then said "you can have it back" after potting his actual 20th.

    ReplyDelete
  129. Well they are pointless in the sense that they have no points. I didn't mean in the irrelevant sense.

    ReplyDelete
  130. Game three Chris.

The points will come for the other lines (91 and 23 were also buzzing in that period).

aqxswjxq - seriously, Blogger wants me to type that?

    ReplyDelete
  131. Chris:

    Couturier 0.17PP TOI/game, 4:50 SH TOI/game

    RNH 2:59 PP TOI/game, 0:00 SH TOI/game

Not saying the Oilers didn't pick right, but they aren't really in the same role

    ReplyDelete
  132. Potter and Sutton out against the Sedins for a d-zone draw? What's Renney's explanation there?

I can't fathom how Jones is the RW option on that line either.

    ReplyDelete
  133. Paul Maclean is bringing back the 'Babych'

    ReplyDelete
  134. Paul Maclean is bringing back the 'Babych'

    Alternatively,

    the 'Babych' is back

    ReplyDelete
  135. Horcoff - Smyth- Gagner would be a much better line than having Jones out there with them. Hopefully that's what we get when Gagner is good to go. Or flip Belanger up there and play Gagner with the Swedes. Jones is all try but he's a fourth liner.

    ReplyDelete
  136. Poor Hall. No points now in 2 games + 2 periods. Here's hoping he gets a mercy point in the third period.

    ReplyDelete
  137. Both Potter And Sutton out there for the last d zone draw shows the Oilers lack of depth on D and coaching staff's poor bench management.

    /copied from my twitter

  138. I think 4 will get that goal. The review the goals, and overturn them post game sometimes.

He got wood on it just as its final edge was on the line IMO.

    Hope not tho.

    ReplyDelete
  139. When they announced a penalty if any hats were thrown onto the ice would Oilers have got a penalty if a cannucklehead had thrown his hat.
I am thinking about the one that came after the announcement

    ReplyDelete
  140. Poor Hall. No points now in 2 games + 2 periods. Here's hoping he gets a mercy point in the third period.

??? Hall has two points tonight.

    ReplyDelete
  141. Just to point out, my Hall comment above was in response to a deleted post above it. Looks sorry now, but there was a point to it.

    ReplyDelete
  142. 'Babych' is bound to be a keeper for the oilgosphere lexicon.

MacLean's Babych goes back to the day of its namesake. It is looking a bit thinner now than when it last took to the ice against the Oilers. He'll need some of that hair to cover up what he is going to loose from his head this winter...

    ReplyDelete
  143. I can't fathom how Jones is the RW option on that line either.

    Hartikainen would look good there.

    Also,

Re: more offense from other lines

When the top 2 5v5 pts/60 forwards from last year (83,89) and the top 5v5 pts/60 Dman (6) get back, that will help.

This team might be a 1/2 RH Dman away from being competitive this year.

    ReplyDelete
  144. Looks like the hatty stands. They did add an assist for Potter on the play.

    ReplyDelete
  145. Mark Lee will be talking about that hat on his death bed.

    ReplyDelete
  146. I'll say Whitney is back Tuesday and Peckman gets the pressbox.

    ReplyDelete
  147. 24 needs to sit for the rest of the game, and the next game.

    Just awful all night.

    ReplyDelete
  148. easy outlet to the winger and Peckham tries to get fancy

    ReplyDelete
  149. I'd play Petry over Peckham in the next game if Whitney isn't ready to go.

    ReplyDelete
  150. Lionheart is a throwback NHLer beginning his NHL career

    ReplyDelete
  151. What's everyone like for the D if everyone's healthy?

    ReplyDelete
  152. Potter's been better than 25,13, and ........ 24 tonight.

If 6 plays Tues then I'd like to see:

    6-58
    5-77
    13/25-44

  153. Smid has looked pretty solid doing the heavy lifting with Gilbert.
