Fussy Britches Update

Treena S Oil has an update via twitter this evening. She tweets "Oilers Leafs talking multiplayer deal. Omark, Gagner, Petry and Pitlick are names being mentioned as per Garfield."

Let's see, that would be two young forwards who could help a team for a decade and a fine young defender who looked the part of an NHL defenseman during an expanded opportunity one year ago.

Plus Pitlick who may or may not turn into something.

How confident are you the Oilers win a trade involving that kind of talent heading the other way?

  1. I see zero comments ... which matches the zero confidence I have in Tambo not to get giveaway the farm for nothing.

    Zero.

  2. has it occurred to anybody that other than the Andy Sutton for Foster trade she has been off on everything else? 1 for ten or something? Pretty confident it is not worth getting worried about.

  3. She was pretty spot on July 1, had the ufa signings well in front of anyone else. Seriously. I was following closely.

  4. For Weber or a signed Suter....... I would do that deal

    ReplyDelete
  5. Twittering away about this as we speak.

It's tough to find a fit for a deal involving Gagner, IMO, with TOR, if they aren't interested in dealing Schenn or their 2012 1st.

Obviously one could come up with something, but in terms of a quality for quality move, which is what I'd imagine the Oilers would be looking for in moving Gagner. Either that, or Gagner as the main chip in a bigger package for a different player. That deal rarely happens now, and I don't know there's much of a fit for that sort of deal for a while.

Depending how EDM views the players involved, I could see EDM trying to move something like Gagner and Pitlick for Schenn. Not sure I'd do that, not sure Burke would do that (different reasons).

  6. Well Schenn is an interesting player, as is Franson. But if they're talking about dealing Gagner, I`d want Schenn coming back.

    And I`m not even certain that`s a trade I'm comfortable doing. What's Schenn's contract?

  7. Before the predictable anger and negative responses come flooding in, I'll chime in with a little pre-emptive perspective:

-The twitter comment merely says these are the players being mentioned, not that all these players are about to be dealt. Anybody envisioning some monstrosity that sends Gagner, Omark, Pitlick and Petry for Schenn and Komisarek, just stop right now. If there is a deal, it will likely involve parts.

-For all his faults in UFA signings, Tambellini has done a pretty good job on the trade market. He's at least managed fair market value for most of his deals. The Penner deal is widely seen by the hockey community as a steal (we'll see where it really is after this year). He also had the wisdom to extort LA to the greatest possible extent on the Smyth deal when many of the itchy fingers in the blogosphere wanted to pull the trigger on a deal involving a 3rd or 4th round pick! He's earned some basic credibility in this area.

-As oilersfan did remind us, this twit(terer) has raised a number of rumours before. She's been right on some, not on others - let's not get too far ahead of ourselves here.

  8. I don"t see Schenn play, but he seems to me just a bunch of TO hype. I don't see him as a top two d-man.

    ReplyDelete
  9. Schenn signed a 5 year extension this past summer, 3.6 mil cap hit.

    ReplyDelete
  10. Oh I guess I should be more constructive. I try and tell my baseball friends that hockey fans are smart and talk about MC79 and Desjardins and all this stuff, but then we have everyone freaking out about fake account tweets and it throws everything I'm telling them in limbo.

  12. First thoughts, there's not much on the Leafs roster that would excite me as a trade possibility. Actually zero.

On 1260 today, Elliot Freedman said that the Oilers tried to trade Hemsky last season, but couldn't get the return that they wanted. That was the first I've that they were actually try to deal him--more so than just listening to offers.

Bob Stauffer had some comments today on Oilers lunch. He seemed to think that Northlands was a branch of the City of Edmonton or something to that effect. His mention of Northlands looking for "squatter's rights" in a future arena deal was pretty funny though. Yes WG, we know whose logo's on the front of Bob's cheques.

    warivers: word verification, true story.

  13. Anyone heard an update about Martindale and his contract situation?

    ReplyDelete
  14. speeds: Yeah, I think that's a lot for what his player type brings. Would you do that deal? Say Gagner and Pitlick for Schenn?

I don't like the cap hit, and he isn't Shea Weber.

    ReplyDelete
  15. Martindale, says he is on the OKC roster as per their site.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Smarmy: Darren Dreger tweeted earlier this week that the Oilers were looking for defensive help and that Gagner was not involved.

He also said that could change (iirc). Plus the Damien Cox thing.

At some point, I think there's smoke....

    ReplyDelete
  17. LT: No, I don't think I would do that deal, just throwing it out there as something the Oilers might consider.

    ReplyDelete
  18. speeds: Yeah, it sounds good until you look closely at it.

As an aside, did Morgan touch home plate?

    ReplyDelete
  19. LT: Of the following two deals, which do you think is the better for EDM (guessing that you probably don't like either, but which do you hate least):

    Gagner for Franson and 2nd

    Gagner and Pitlick for Schenn

    ReplyDelete
  20. "First thoughts, there's not much on the Leafs roster that would excite me as a trade possibility. Actually zero."

Yip. It's true basically. The Oil young players suggested by her are better than most of anything the Leafs have anywhere.

    ReplyDelete
  21. speeds: The deal for Franson and the 2nd rounder.

    ReplyDelete
  22. RYAN JONES SUCKS OMG!

This is the correct answer regardless of your socio-economic belief system.

As rickibear mentioned in a previous thread, Teddy Peckman faced tougher comp with worse help than Schenn and came out smelling better.

Schenn is only 21 (turns 22 Nov 2), but is only signed until the end of 15/16, so he'll only be 26 and a UFA.

That's about when Dmen start to become very good.

Case study on why not to start Dmen in the NHL at 18, you don't get their best RFA years.

If the Oilers are going to trade Gagner +, it better has an established, top 3 D, and not someone like Schenn who has potential to get there.

    ReplyDelete
  23. His mention of Northlands looking for "squatter's rights" in a future arena deal was pretty funny though. Yes WG, we know whose logo's on the front of Bob's cheques

Only Bob could equate a legal lease on a building with a history of running a business as "squatters rights"

I've tuned into Bob's show a few times since he moved to CHED and it shouldn't be called "Oilers Now", but "Why everyone who disagrees with the current arena deal is un-Canadian, un-Edmontonian, and a subversive pinko"

    ReplyDelete
  24. Tambellini could do nothing at and his job would be safe.

The only way he is going to be fired is by making a bad trade or Hall/RNH busting.

Don't really care about Gagner or Omark but Pitlick projects to be Kesler without the 40 goals. No doubt Burke would love that kind of player.

Nashville makes much more sense. They could use tweener top 6 forward more than Toronto, plus they offered more than Toronto for Kessel but the Trill wouldn't sign with the Preds AND we already know that the Preds were sniffing about Hemsky before he was hurt last year.

Blum or Ekholm sure sound better than Gunnar or Franson.

For those that don't know about Ekholm:

    19 years old
    6'4, 200+
    SEL: 55 10 23 33 38

He had a better season post draft than MPS and he's a defender.

    ReplyDelete
  25. @speeds, give me the Gagner & Pitlick for Schenn option.

I know he is overhyped by to center of the universe crowd but I see the potential for an elite D there - albeit in a shutdown role a la Foote. That is worth Gagner, IMO.

    ReplyDelete
  26. everyone keeps talking schenn and franson...

what if it's fuckin' phaneuf?!! i'm not kidding.

    ReplyDelete
  27. If you think Franson is good then you don't watch hockey.

He is Souray without the toughness.

I said after the Toronto/Nasvhille that the real loser in the trade was Franson because he wouldn't be playing for Trotz anymore. He was byproduct of an airtight system. Put him on the Oilers and he worse than Gilbert.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Traktor: Can't see Nashville trading Ekholm unless they get the forward in return who'll convince Weber to resign this summer. Otherwise, they've got to hoard their defensemen because they'll have to step in next season.

Would a couple of Gagner, Omark, Pitlick for Suter or Weber get a deal done? Would it even be worth it given the fact you'll have to resign them next summer or they can walk (Suter next year, Weber the year after)?

    ReplyDelete
  29. Why on earth did they bunt in front of Pujols?

    ReplyDelete
  30. IMO they bunted because Berkman has had recent success vs Halladay and Holliday after. Pujols looked bad his last at bat. Both SP are dealing! wow! Great throw by Molina on the SB attempt and great dive by Furcal.

    ReplyDelete
  31. I thought Utley tied it with that first swing in the 9th. Going to be a wild LCS in both leagues.

I'll go with STL-TEX in the WS and The Rangers win it all.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Wow. Gernat 6 GP, 5G 5A 10 PTS +6. I am very impressed.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Those left:

    Tigers: $106,953,000
    Rangers: $92,124,290

    Brewers: $83,590,833
    Cardinals:$109,048,000

    Shrapnel:

    Yankess: $207,047,964
    Rays: $41,671,308

    Phillies: $165,976,381
    Diamond Backs: $50,639,833

    Honorable mention:

    Red Sox: $ 161,762,475

    ReplyDelete
  34. That Utley ball was reminiscent of his warning track shot in the World Baseball Classic. Looks like solid match-ups in the LCS. I'm liking Brewers and Tigers in WS with the Brewers to win.

    ReplyDelete
  35. stubby: They won in '82 too (Brewers) but an umpire gave it to the Cardinals. So if Brew win, that's alright with me.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Not sure any team should win wearing baby blues like they had in 82....but as I type that I think the Cards had baby blues then too.
Brewers will have to play their best to beat the Cards. STL looks like a team ready to win, they have been playing playoff baseball since August.

    ReplyDelete
  37. The key for MIL will be pitching and defense. The key for STL will be overcoming LaRussa.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Pitching + Defence + Miller High Life = Brewers over Cards.

    ReplyDelete
  39. So we drafted the second coming on D late in the draft? Awesome. Emergency recall!!! Haha

    ReplyDelete
  40. I don't particularly want to trade Gagner. However, the Oilers only control him for three more years and have to make a big decision on him next summer. He might be at max trade value right now.

3 years of Gagner vs. 5 years of Schenn.

    ReplyDelete
  41. The only two guys I would want from Toronto would be Kulemin and Reimer. Neither of them are defensemen so please hang up the phone Mr.Tambellini Man.

Fussy britches hasn't been wrong about anything so far that I recall. If it's just talks, that's how she delivers it.

    ReplyDelete
  42. D'backs lost.

    **Click**

Done with baseball for another year.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Something with this combo

    Schenn
    Franson

    KULEMIN

  44. I think RossCreek put it best on twitter: http://twitter.com/#!/RossCreekNation/status/122058757718016001

I don't see anything happening, but believe they could be talking. By eye, Fussy Britches seems to be hitting about .300 with her rumours. Though I haven't seen the advanced stats...

    Re: MLB
Ecstatic that Rangers & Brewers made it, but I think Cards & Tigers have the edge. St. Louis takes WS because Verlander only plays one position.

Next year is the Padres' year for sure! (Uuuughhhhh)

  46. For Weber. Maybe. Who knows, maybe the Mike Green rumours start again, but those kind of assets are similar to the Pronger deal years ago that we still cry about.

Lupul coming off a 29 goal season (better year then Gagner), Smid top ranked Dman in the system (Petry), 2 firsts and a 2nd rd pick (Omark, Pitlik are close to those in value). So based on the Pronger deal it seems reasonable that a team like Nashville would look at this as an option. And based on our depth, would we be happy?

    Hall-Nuge-Hemsky
    Smyth-Horcoff-Eberle
    MPS-Belanger-Hartikainen
    Eager-Lander-Jones
    Hamilton-Vandevelde-Hordichuk

More balance and more size, with still a very skilled top 9, but with only Eberle as a smurf.

That is still as good as we would have with Omark and Gagner, but we add Weber, get arguably the best defenseman in the league, and suddenly our D looks a lot better

    Whitney-Weber
    Gilbert-Smid
    Peckham-Barker
    Potter-Sutton

We are a better team if that deal was Weber. Not sure if anyone else would make sense, but I do that deal for Weber.

    ReplyDelete
  47. One thing to keep in mind is head shots. This is not going away given that Crosby lost a year and is still unstable and forensic research is also providing legs to this issue and is making the medical side crystal clear.

This is going to change what a productive player looks like. A defenseman like Petry, who has size and a full skill set is very likely going to be the prototype top D soon.

Large immobile, high hitting guys are already losing value as the speed increases and obstruction is called.

Any skilled player with speed, especially with size, has to be a keeper unless the same returns, barring other issues like injury.

Schenn and Gudbranson may not pan out as projected because the league moved away from their strengths.

So Petry and Pitlick stay unless we are talking Webber or Doughty. Gagner and Omark only for excellent return that doesn't create a hole.

Oh yeah: "Where there's smoke....there's someone smoking something?"

    4-2-6 in 4GP now. +5.

Great starts for The Gnat and Funke so far.

  50. Off topic but I found this article on Gillis an interesting read and thought others might as well.

I loath the Canucks and felt he was a terrible choice for GM but have to admit he has done a nice job in many respects.

Would love to be a fly on the wall regarding his opinions on our current GM. Not to suggest they would be negative or correct even if they were but it would be interesting none the less given the history.

  51. Nothing in the six million newspapers here on these rumours.

Up the middle the Leafs have Grabovski (after Kulemin their best player), Connolly (just signed for two years), Lombardi (looks recovered from concussion) plus fourth liners Staekel and Dupuis plus Bozak who is a tweener of the Pouliot variety imo plus Kadri rising although he has started on the wing and is hurt now.

If I am the Leafs I would like to push Lupul and MacArthur down the depth chart if I could - I don't really see any Oiler doing that unless its one of the golden boys or Smyth or Hemsky.

And Kulemin/Kessel play RW so its not Hemsky.

I would take Grabovski or Kulemin in a heartbeat from the Leafs - terrific players. On D I like Schenn, he's still developing but I think he is going to be a good one.

Haven't seen Franson but buddy got beat out by Komisarek for a spot. And from what I have heard Traktor is on the money, skilled buy soft.

So I don't see anything there unless they can pry Schenn or Aulie from them - I don't see Burke making that move. And I don't see a fit for Gagner at all.

piner - all of us, thinking about 2006. Also, Steve MacIntyre.

    ReplyDelete
  52. If more than two of those names are going to Toronto, Reimer or Gustafsson better be coming back.

D isn't the only weak spot on the club.

    ReplyDelete
  53. I still don't see how the Oilers and Leafs match up. I can't see the Oilers giving up a player like Gagner or Omark for anything less than a legitimate top four D - they haven't proceeded this offseason as if they expect to make the playoffs so why would they dump a potentially good player in the long term for short term help?

The Leafs on the other hand are under a lot of pressure to make the playoffs this year, so why would they give up a top four D for futures, especially when they already have a lot of players with similar skill sets to Gagner?

Burke said a few weeks ago that are looking to package a couple of younger players to bring in a big veteran forward with playoff experience to help push them over the top. Looking a their roster, that makes a lot of sense. WHo on the Oilers really fits that bill?

The only way I could see the Oilers and Leafs dealing is if there's a third team involved. Phoenix has a couple of forwards that fit Burke's bill - Whitney, Doan and Langkow. Maybe something like Doan to the Leafs, McArthur, Bozak and Omark to Phoenix and Gunnarson and Turris to the Oilers.

    ReplyDelete
  54. Keith Aulie anyone?

Leafs 2nd and Aulie for Gagner?

    ReplyDelete
  55. not enough Aussie, not enough, Gagner is an established NHLer

Rumour has a third team involved. I'll believe it when I see it.
