Wish You Were Here

Brandon Davidson was one of four cuts today by the Edmonton Oilers. I would have thought more cuts would be in order, but some of the defensemen are probably hanging around for the next few days as insurance against the old fogeys (Whitney, Sutton) being able to get the blood flowing.

Davidson was sent back to Regina (WHL), a mild surprise in that the Oilers could have turned him pro. It likely bodes well for that wonky Rooskie Tulupov and might be good news for Martin Marincin (though my guess is he also returns to junior).

Also sent away today were D David Musil (no surprise, he got a preseason game and that's a victory for a guy drafted in June); Jeremie Blain (the bookend to Davidson, their careers are marching in lock step) and Tyler Bunz (a guy who is tracking like a comet).

Who's left that we can be surprised by? Marincin hasn't performed especially well; Ryan Lowery is as reliable as a shape-shifter; Ryan Martindale who may have earned his contract.

The next set of cuts should be a bunch of pro's to OKC. I think it may also be time we agreed that Tyler Pitlick isn't going back to junior.

  1. I am really looking forward to see Bunz' career.

  2. Someone on the twitter tweeted that Pitlick was not going back to junior guaranteed.

And I think it was somebody reliable not just some fly by night cheezie eating live in mom's basement superhero pajama wearing chronic masturbating blogger either.

You know one of them m&m types with all of the access and that.

  3. I believe Pitlick said last week that he was told he would not be returning to junior.

  4. I really wonder what the point of sending Bunz back so early is. Surely they could've given him another game.

  5. Biggest revelation from last night. They are using the fucking diamond on the PK. Lordy. I thought Ralph was going to be banned from attending meetings after last years fiasco.

  6. Junior season starts on Friday, I'd guess that's why. If he isn't making the team might as well let him get comfortable with his junior team.

  7. Also from last night's post game intereviews. Khabi wants at least 3 more starts - maybe a fourth even.

He repeated that he needs at least 3 more starts and likes to play lots.

    Oh lord, help us all.

    Faceplant.

  8. I imagine that's Nik laying some excuse-groundwork early on in anticipation of the questions of why he isn't playing well when those questions arise.

and, yeah, there's a good chance they'll arise.

I'm really looking forward to getting a look at Pitlick, Lander and Hamilton as I believe that's the future third line.

  9. How about we give Khabby games in OKC to his heart's content.

  10. Gus, I'm with you ... or on a KHL team.

v3.1, please make it happen !

  11. I get that Bulin did not have a good year last year, but I wonder if people are making a little too much out of his first pre-season game.

To paraphrase Allen Iverson, we are talking about pre-season here.

I see Bob MacKenzie has a half hour special Thursday on the top 10 draft picks for 2012. Seems a little early to get excited about the draft too.

  12. Well the more games he plays the more likely he gets 'hurt' and won't get shipped out.

I don't mind if he gets the starts though, really, as long as Dubnyk gets his work and is ready.

Put it this way, if Khabby is just rusty, as some claim, then the work will get him unrusty. If he's just plain shit, most likely, then he will play poorly and there will be little doubt as to the pecking order.

Just as long as Dubnyk gets his work in and is ready.

  13. Ducey - not too worried about last night, worried about last year, I think it was Gregor who pointed out that Khabibulin's numbers were worse than Brian Elliot's last year.

lol Brian Elliot, he is a punchline that guy

  14. OK wtf is Scott Howson doing?
Umberger for 4.6 per for 5 yrs..
    WTF!!!

What? Commentors on Oiler blog sites overreacting and being a tad dramatic? That's unpossible!`

  17. Tweets from Tencer and Gene saying that the Crazy Russian concussed Eager the other night.

Time to put a leash on Tulupov...or least have him practice and dress by himself before he runs over one of the kids.

  18. Is it possible that the crazy Russian does enough damage to convince the Oilers he is worth keeping and/or forces their hand by harming enough legit players that they have no choice but to sign him?

    ReplyDelete
  19. I think the crazy russian now needs to dress for every remaining pre-season game. simple as that.

all remaining intra squad practices should be no contact.

  20. That Tulupov is a real go-getter. I like his 3 step program to making the NHL.

    1. Get invited to camp
    2. Destroy all competition.
    3. Sign NHL contract because they have no other options.

For the sake of my story, I'm going to go ahead and assume that Tulupov looked at Eager's jersey number and point totals from last year and figured he was a defenseman.

  21. @ book¡e

SOMEBODY LOCK THIS GUY UP! HES TALKING CRAZY TALK.

    On a completely unrelated note:

OMG! Scheifle scored 4 points last night! FOUR! In ONE GAME!

We would definitely need to give Gagner, Hall, Hemsky + to get him, but we should totally do it! He'd look so awesome playing with Eberle and Smytty.*

*This may in fact be sarcasm. If you failed to realize this after reading it, and book;e's comment, you may want to get your fallaciometre** checked.

**Fallaciometres detect the level of falaciousness in a given statement. Commonly misunderstood to be fellatiometres, which measure the quality of fellating*** being given or received.

***If you do not know what this word means, you are probably too young to be reading this blog. FYI.

  22. That's still 5 goalies left. Which is training camp's variation of the 3-headed monster.

Bunz had a real good camp, got a game, surely got another confidence boost, but this season's focus was always going to be in the Hat. And maybe wearing the red maple leaf.

Tons of juniors getting sent back all over the place. It's normal to send all but the serious contenders back to their clubs before the regular season starts, isn't it?

    ReplyDelete
  23. Maybe the Oilers should take to putting Bulin in the jersey of the next opponent each practice.

Red Bull (Tulupov) will destroy him the second he leaves the net.

    ReplyDelete
  24. With the new protocol regarding concussions, having extra bodies available may be very valuable.

    ReplyDelete
  25. I like Red Bull for Tulupov, fits his style and is clever.

Still, letting him crush his own teammates in an intra-squad friendly and keeping him around sends a message that will only end in suspensions down the road.

I think sending back all the juniors is good player and roster management at this point.

And the freakin' diamond is back! That's unpossible, if me ever sawed it.

  26. Hmmmm, a tough, crazy Russian...might Tulupov be the new Ulanov?

Does he block shots with his teeth?

    ReplyDelete
  27. Hopefully. Ulanov had a lot of try, hope this kid has a bunch of it too.
