Finding Klefbom

The more I'm reading about Oscar Klefbom the more interesting the story gets, and I'm wondering if there are resources available to fill in more of the story.

I went through the SEL games to count his TOI and found that he was listed in the lineup 23 times but there were only 16 games where there was a TOI total. I counted 193 minutes, which is about 12 minutes a game for the 16 games he's listed as playing. He played as much as 18:57 and as little as 2:49. I think there were three examples of what we might call games when he played a regular shift.

At the World U18 junior championships, Klefbom scored well (6gp, 1-3-4 +4, his D partner Brodin scored 4gp, 0-1-1 +2 in the same series). I'm wondering if there are TOI totals for any of the other leagues Klefbom played in, and have searched awhile but was unable to find it.

That doesn't mean it isn't out there. If you've come across any information regarding Klefbom's time-on-ice, or how he was used in 2010-11, please pass it along.

This is a very interesting player.

  1. Sorry LT, I'm a little slow this am. Is the implication that the low TOI totals in the SEL last season are the reason why his offensive output looks so low and therefore indicative of a more promising offensive game than previously thought?

Or is the low TOI implying that Klefbom played very little last year and so we don't really know what we're getting given he hardly ever played a regular shift... kind of like scouting Seguin based on just this last season.

    Or something else entirely?

  2. Wheat, as a guy who is playing in a professional league when most players his age are in a junior league somewhere, I think playing at all is indicative of how far along he is at this point. But for the sake of his development, he's going to have to start getting more ice-time somewhere. Let's hope his team starts to lean on him a bit more.

The team he's on is basically supposed to be the Detroit Red Wings of the SEL, from what I've heard. I think it's the equivalent of a 20 year old being the 7th man for the Red Wings; you're just impressed that he's there at all given his age.

  3. He's certainly an interesting player.

The recent words/stories about Lander have me wondering if we haven't drafted the defensive equivalent in Klefbom.

A little raw and slightly unknown on draft day but as information comes out we start to develop a picture of a player with obvious leadership skills and a nice ranging skill set.

If on-ice intelligence come with the package...

  4. There has been precious little ink spilled on Mr. Klefbom. There has to be something there based on the scouting reports, draft ranking and why the Oil took him where they did, but I don't know that is available to us plebes.

I look forward to the emerging story in the coming years.

  5. I am pretty sure that the Oilers looked at his name "Klef-Bomb" and thought "Man, that guy's name will make awesome headlines, and Principe is going to love him" and then drafted him.

I mean, look at the names of the next 10 guys picked.

    Murphy
    Noesen
    Biggs
    Morrow
    Puempel
    Percy
    Danault
    Namestnikov
    Phillips
    Jensen
    Rakell

I mean, what the hell is Gene going to do with those names. "Looks like Murphy's law was true tonight as Murphy scored on his own team" - blah. And Namestnkikov - that's horrible.

So, it simply had to be Klefbom!

  6. I spent a little time on http://www.hockeyligan.se
and came up with the same numbers for his SEL TOI. It appears that Oscar dressed for 7 games in which he didn't register a shift??

Anyway... he was 9th in total TOI for Färjestads BK defensmen over the entire season.
Montreal's over-age 4th round 2011 draftee Magnus Nygren and his offense came out of nowhere to suit up 22 games(15 pts). Nygren managed to log twice as many minutes as Oscar during the regular season.

So last season Klefbom had eight defensmen ahead of him in Färjestad. Apparently former leaf Jonas Frogren will be injured to start next season, but the rest of the D don't appear to be going anywhere. I'm sure the wild will leave Brodin to bulk up this year. Nygren likely won't make the jump either. Unless the Bulldogs really need some bodies on the blueline.

So Oscar will have to pass one or two guys on the depth chart to get in the top six. Apparently he'll be playing in a U20 tourney this August, so hopefully he impresses.

With all that said... I actually think he'll get into 40 games and average over 16 min/g.

  7. So we've drafted the hidden second coming who scores, is effective and noticed despite minimal time, but is being sheltered for some reason?

    Works for me.

  8. If Klefbom makes the Oilers out of TC, AND HE WILL, I can't see there being any room on the roster for Cogliano or Brule.

    ;oP

  9. Okay, after reviewing that article by Lisa McRitchie, I think it's pretty clear what the Oilers need to do next:

Trade for Jonas Brodin. After all, why settle for one stud defenseman who apears to be a 5-tool defenseman when you could have two? After all, it's pretty clear that the Wild are dying for more scoring, and we just finished talking about who one of Gagner and Cogliano wouldn't be here longer term... why not see who's trending upwards at the deadline, and see how much they can milk out of Minni and get Brodin too?

Oh, and Kelfbom looks like a great pick...

  10. Jordan, the Wild thing is interesting. Cogliano suiting up with none other than Heatley.

    ReplyDelete
  11. So if Färjestads is indeed a top team in the SEL and Klefbom is most likely gone in 2 years I do wonder if they will spend much time trying to develop him.

Klefbom will need to emerge as a top option. But I think he will. Top prospects like Rundbland have done so recently.

  12. Maybe the Kings could send Penner their way too. Just to insure that Fletcher is fired within the season.

The Penner - Cogliano - Heatley line could be awesome.

    We can keep Smid though.

    Swedish hockey is confusing.

  13. Cogliano to the Ducks for a 2nd.

Not surprised, but a bit sad. There is a player there, but I think he needs a fresh start.

    ReplyDelete
  14. I was really hoping they'd get a warm body on D for Cogs. Is a 2nd fair value? Why are we still accumulating draft picks?

    *channels Lowetide*

I think this means a trade is coming.

  15. tencer tweeted:

Cogs to ANA for a 2nd rounder.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Then we can use that 2nd pick for a defender. Nice.

As for Nygren I suspect they'l try to make him play in the AHL.

    ReplyDelete
  17. There's Bob Murray digging through our trash bin again... I think he has a problem.

    ReplyDelete
  18. So the pick is in 2013, not 2012.

Now I feel even worse. I think there's more of a player there than that return.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Great opportunity for Cogs.

A chance to actually replace Todd Marchant.

I wish v3.1 could have added something to get Lydman back. LH shot, but would bolster the top 4 for sure.

Going for only a 2nd is probably a blow to Cog's ego, he might play next year with a purpose. (unlike his Dzone coverage, which never seemed to have any purpose)

    Good luck Michigan Wolverine!

  20. The picture at center becoming more clear.

Can't say I'm stunned that all he was going to fetch was a 2nd rounder though.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Call the cops!! A second rounder was really more than he was worth at this stage of his career.

    ReplyDelete
  22. There was no way he was going to make it to the arb hearing. This was probably a case of first 2nd rounder takes him.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Marchant replacement?

    "Dude, stop following me around!"

    ReplyDelete
  24. The Oilers could have kept 13 him for 4RW and not Jones. (I know he shots L)

    Same money (approx)

The Ryan Jones signing is just the gift that keeps on hurting.

  25. Scratch one smurph.

Poor Oscar. He finally gets some love on the internet and then has the misfortune to have his thread overtaken by the major Cogs news.

Hope the trade doesn't get rescinded over outstanding fat lip issues.

    ReplyDelete
  26. I like Cogs, hard worker and all but he is the very definition of "tweener". He was a late first rounder that has stalled in development, I can't see how anyone thinks you could get more than a 2nd rounder for him.

    ReplyDelete
  27. I'm going to propose a question for folks' opinions:

Does the timing of this trade (the week immediately following prospects camp) say anything about the Oilers' plans for Ryan Nugent-Hopkins or is it a coincidence?

    ReplyDelete
  28. If this team is really committed to trying to land a top 4 defenceman, then having two 2nd rounders to play with makes things more interesting. I wonder if they could now put together an enticing package to a high cap team like Washington or Buffalo?

    ReplyDelete
  29. I think this trade was just moving a forward to clear some roster spots. The pending arbitration hearing pushed this forward with Cogs.

He was a spare part, yes, maybe a useful player ??, but a spare all the same.

No sense dragging out the drama any longer. Especially if some arbitrator thought he would be worth $2M per.

  30. Murat: There's still Gagner, Horcoff and Bélanger.

Probably more for Lander/O'Marra/the youth parade.

    ReplyDelete
  31. dohfOs says some encouraging things about him in his first post in forever.

    http://swedishoil.dohfos.eu/

One thing of note he mentions is this:

    "Klefbom (pronounced “KLae-bom” - with a slightly longer “o” and a silent f)"

I had Klefbom ranked 14th (ahead of Brodin for better or worse as time will tell) and as the 5th best defensemen and I though that he sounded like the best D-man outside the "elite" level.

I still hold out hopes he may become elite and am very happy with him as a prospect in our system.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Doesn't matter much now but the Oilers certainly liked Klefbom a lot more than Prospectus did. Had him ranked at 68th overall.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Cabbiesmacker, I wouldn't put much stock in 'Hockey Prospectus' for whatever little they're worth. Someone would have to be smoking the weed quite a bit to think Oskar was getting out of the 1st round.

    Oskar Klefbom rankings pre-draft

    THN: 37
    ISS: 10
    CSS: 6 (European Skaters)
    TSN (Bob MacKenzie): 21
