LT: Your prediction over at ON was Bruins in 7.Hope you're right. I think Thomas is going to cement the Conn Smythe by throwing a goose egg up on the scoreboard.
Last day of a 20-month stint in Fort McMurray for work? Good day.
Getting home to Edmonton just-in-time for game 7 of the Stanley Cup Final? Great day.
Watching the Bruins win the Cup by beating "the douchiest bunch of douches that ever douched" (to steal & modify a favorite Homer Simpson line)? That...would make it one of the BEST days, period.
Get it done Bruins - do it for Wham Bam Cam, and Mark "Started Playing While the Soviet Union Still Existed" Recchi - even though one of his Cups was won with the *spits* Hurricanes, seeing that guy go out a winner would only be right (pretty much the polar opposite of having to sit through watching Burrows or Lapierre raise the Stanley).
I'm in the opposite circumstances to Hbomb - I won't get off the plane until it is all done (and landing in a state where they likely won't care Stanley is being raised). I still feel like the 'Nucks will hoist the cup, but if there is any justice it will be a 1-0 win for the Bruins and Thomas will take home the MVP to stick it in the eye of the BC faithful.
Tambi not sure what he's going to do with Stortini. Matty thinks he will be sold at the draft for a pick. I'm not sure how a guy who made it through waivers brings you a pick, but Matty claims Dallas was interested... so why wouldn't they wait till he's FA?
JFJ is in the same boat but... might get re-signed by the Oil, or that was the impression I got.
Souray's buyout period starts today. Two week window.
No word on Strudwick yet, probably cause the Oil haven't decided if they're gonna carry 3 goalies next year or not, so might need a player who can play F & D. OK the reasoning there might've been mine.
Speaking of goalies, Brownlee speculates that netminder Nikolai Khabibulin might end up in FLA. He's played for Tallon before, Vokoun is UFA, and the Panthers are a hundred billion lightyears away from the cap floor.
Now that's the one draft day deal I could see happening. Khabby for a 7th... we could draft uberSmurf Grimaldi first overall and the draft would still be a resounding success.
LT: check out Scott Reynold's article, "Is Even Strength Scoring More Important", over at C&B (apologies if you already have). He examines the last 15 years of NHL prospects and how their EV vs PP production in junior has affected their NHL scoring. Turns out (and Reynolds was one of those concerned about lack of EV scoring by RNH) the "issue" might not be much of one at all.
Interesting stuff by Reynolds again. He has good kung fu.
PDO mentioned to me that Horton has a medical this AM, and if he clears, he plays tonight.
If that happens and the Bruins win, the weeping and nashing of teeth in Dystown will be at an all time high.
Same officiating crew that did BOS/TBY game 7, expect next to nothing to be called.
If there's a lot of sketchy plays that don't get called and the Bruins wins I fully expect at least 3 Dys' fans head to actually explode from rage at the game.
Usually when a team wins the cup in the other's barn the crowd is respectful (see CHI in PHI last year)
PHI is the toughest sports town in North America and they were respectful.
If BOS wins tonight in VAN, I fully expect a gong show from those idiots.
Oh wait while i look up all the other trite comments made about my 30% sub set which is a part of a performance.
We cannot trust that BS.
I tried to pass off a 1st round review.
I sure as heck am not going to let this pass with any RNH kissy face koilaid boy love.
To let you know I have gone back 1990 draft and taken every player drafted till now. Put them in excel. thanks elite prospect.
In the process of pulling the assist and goal numbers for those players both EV and pp available on the chl siites NCAA sites and euro hockey sites.
Hopefully can trend for 1. Goal percentage 2. EV/PP ratio 3. Success rate based on NHLE 4. Sub set based NHLE based on viable sub sets (groups that have players go to NHL by age 23) 5. Then the varios production based on combined (a) 1&2 (b) 1 & 3 (c) 2 & 3 (d) 1, 2, & 3
spOILer: If FLA is dumb enough to take Khabi I'd by the plane ticket for him. Not sure if that's just wishful thinking on Brownlee's part or not - but the only way I can see that is if they needed the money to get to the cap floor.
Hoping the Bruins win tonite. If they find a way to get an early goal all the pressure is on VAN and I could see them getting really tight. No Raymond makes the matchups a little harder for the canuckleheads.
I would love it if Florida took Khabibulin, but Tallon has got to be insane if he thinks that's the best way to solve his goalie problem. He'd be better off taking a flyer on both Ray Emery and Martin Gerber. One of the two will probably work out and combined they'd cost less than Khabibulin.
Doesn't Florida have Markstrom? Given that he's probably going to be their starter in the next year or two, bringing in a guy like Khabibulin as a vetran mentor type of player whose contract is up at the same time as Markstrom's ELC might have some merit.
FLA not only wants to get to cap floor but doesn't want to win. LA rode lower in the standings than deserved a few years ago by employing weakness in the crease.
It makes some sense but I still very much doubt Rehab goes there. A front loaded contract on a cap tight team such as Drury seems like a better move.
I wonder if there is a measurable drop in productivity in Canada on a day like this.
Even without Game 7, lots to talk about for Oiler fans.
Matty's article is a nice conversation piece. I'm not sure what you can realistically get for Stortini, Jacques, etc but like most people I was a big enough fan of guys like Hartikainen to be happy the spot is opening up. It's all just rotating deck chairs for the moment anyway.
Matheson also mentions the possibility of Strudwick being punted to a player development sort of role which I think we'd all be fine with. Lowetide's been on that campaign trail for a year or more now and I think we're all about ready for the concept of hockey players who are good hockey players and not just good people. Hopefully this opens up a door.
Lastly, there's the possibility of a Souray buy-out. I suppose it makes some sense at this stage. He's not helping Edmonton win hockey games and even if his history is forgiveable (seriously, under the right circumstances fans will forgive a player almost anything) it seems he's lost a step and a few KpH on his slapper. If he's a junk asset, set him free - let him rot in someone else's scrapyard.
All of these possibilities sound positive to me. It appears Edmonton is on the path to cutting its dead weight. That said, there's an awfully huge question on the horizon: does this signal that the organization is ready to actually add pieces as soon as this summer?
And if so, is Edmonton's management cut out for the task? It's one thing to sell your house for more a good price and it's an entirely separate venture to build a new home.
It seems like only yesterday that your team was struggling through a first round series against your bitter rivals who historically dominate you in the playoffs. But you survived, just barely, thanks to an overtime goal in game seven. Remember the excitement when the winning goal was scored, by that particular player? Little did we know the controversy that awaited them weeks later.
Love the ambiguity in this paragraph. Doesn't say which team he's talking about and it applies equally to both.
I am getting up at 3:50 am on my side of the world to watch the game (read: cheer against Vancouver); none of my friends or colleagues want to get up that early.
If the Bruins play like they're supposed to, they're going to win.
This series reminds me of the Edmonton 2006 final, where the Canes would whip the Oilers then Oilers would storm back and win until game 6 where they made like the Bruins and hammered the poor Canes into the ice - silly me thought Oilers could carry that with them to Carolina.
I'm counting on that lack of productivity kicking in tonight. I'm stuck at work and am hoping for a dead floor so I can keep to the cash room with radio.
Any idea which WPG station is likely to carry the game?
Living in the states, I'm unfortunately subjected to the Versus/NBC broadcasts. Its a sickeningly pro-American broadcast that believes the Bruins can do no wrong. I'm fine if the Bruins win it, but the biased broadcast makes me want to puke.
So as much as the Vanucks are a bunch of douches, I feel compelled to cheer for the Canadian team. I'm sure I'll regret it later, but I can't help cheering for the Canucks to win it.
Frelbo: If you were watching the CBC broadcast, you'd be even sicker the other way. Healy spent the last 40 minutes of game 6 waxing poetic about how different the game could have been if Henrik had buried his chance in the first minute, and Hughson called about 3 plays icing because he hoped they would be.
The Oil should get a section of Edmonton designated Finnish territory and make it that much easier to be here as a player. Then get Horcov to defect from the Mother country adopt Finnish citzenship. Then he might get more love from the fan base along with more respect from the Finnish majority of the team.
Rooting for the Broons from out here in block 16 of the North Sea. No TV coverage out hear, rubbish satellite internet - does anyone have a link to good internet radio coverage? Cheers.
The 5’11”, 200-pound Seinajoki, Finland native has played in 89 career games with the Pelicans, collecting 22 goals and 12 assists for 34 points as well as 271 penalty minutes.
Last year he had 186 PIM in 52 games. Next closest on his team was Dman with 85 PIM in 47 games.
If you're gonna get a pest, might as well get a Finn.
Woodguy: If you're gonna get a pest, might as well get a Finn.
Schitzo: Stortini not only lost his NHL job, he may have just lost his AHL job.
This Tyrvainen guy scored 14 goals while he was racking up 186 penalty minutes. You're not kidding Stortini lost his AHL job. Storts hasn't scored that many since Junior... and even then only once.
So yesterday it was Columbus who is wanting to deal the 8th pick for a player who can help now.
Today, the NYI are open to dealing the 5th pick so they can win now (article in today's NY Post).
Is this really about winning now or are GM's thinking that this year's draft class is not that strong? Know that spOILer and fpb have made the case that there's a lot of talent, but still, there's a lot of willingness to deal this year - especially compared to last year.
spOILer: The guy looks like the Cal Clutterbuck of Europe. Taking a spin on youtube, it seems that he frequently takes charging penalties worthy of 5 minutes, 10 minutes, and the game.
Better topic for another day to be sure. Been reading what you're saying about this and one could make the argument that in both cases there is desperation to win now.
But it's fair game. The numbers say good but not elite talent in this draft - so it makes you wonder if someone really sees something or if they're smoking the drapes.
Rich: I don't think the ATL/NYI are exactly the most reliable people either.
Last year they picked a guy with 5% odds of turning into a ,50 PPG player in the NHL.
It's pathetic when you're a multi million dollar business, and you don't even bother making simple research on your picks.
As for the draft, I think it's the first time the N1 pick will be so weak, but at the same time it's going to be one of the best draft to be 2-8. Just so many guys who scored plentiful.
Looks like management is trying to recreate the glory days
They already have their next messier. They're drafting the supposed next Gretzky and maybe a Lowe too. Now they may have their next Finnish pest like tikkanen.
If only they could get a Coffey, a kurri and a fuhr.
I think this is a relatively weak draft. It is one of the reasons teams are able to pick up multiple picks near the draft ......Col- getting St Louis pick ditto Oil with LA's
Think last time we had 3 picks it was a weaker class like 2007
Yeah, he said a couple minutes later when Bob was asking about a couple other of the other guys that he's trying to talk as much as possible without saying anything.
I think he knows RNH will never get to him though.
Dale Tallon has let it be known that RNH is his guy if he gets past Edmonton and Colorado.
Apparently he told RNH at the combine that if Edmonton and Colorado pass on him to just start walking up to the stage.
As the Oilers spend years hoovering up high-end first round picks, the Bruins are getting their hands on the big one with a team completely devoid of first rounders (Seguin excepted).
In all seriousness, couldn't happen to a nicer team. Hope this keeps up.
Should knock the smugness off the Canucks and some of their more annoying fans, and finally get rid of that insipid "Canucks Cup Quest" banner from TSN.
After saving a shot and 2 rebounds in a game during the Winter Olympics, the colour commentator on the BBC said of Luongo "He's once, twice, three times a lady!"
Whatever people here right about Van fans, just know that we all appreciate you and your presence here. And we all feel for you and know where you're coming from.
Fans like you deserve a cup, and you'll get one at some point.
So, I don't think Luongo can return to Vancouver. He will be too hated. I feel sorry for the guy. Better to just have the team lose it than for it to largely fall on one guy.
It will be interesting to see if he (avec contract) is tradable. Is he?
I think CBJ and NYI wanting to move their picks speaks more to where they are as franchises rather than the quality of the draft.
CBJ - Howson is on the hot seat and I doubt he has a job next year without making the playoffs. 8th pick isn't going to help this year, but he could pick up some real help by dealing it.
They could easily turn into Atlanta with a fan base turning off after 1 playoff appearance in franchise history (11 years). Well done Doug McLean.
NYI - They have a raft of good young players with Tavares, Moulson, Okposo, Grabner, Bailey, Comeau, and Wisehart. They need vets to start building a winner and 5th pick can probably get something good.
I actually don't mind of lot of Snows moves (aside from the Dipietro contract and taking Nino Niederreiter at 5 last year), if they can find a goalie Montoya and Poulin were not bad last year) a 1/2D and top 6 scoring vet I think they can make the playoffs.
I love how Chara grabbed Thomas and pulled him up there. Timmy Thom is just one of the oddest stories in the NHL, a true and true outlier if I ever saw one.
I love how Chara grabbed Thomas and pulled him up there. Timmy Thom is just one of the oddest stories in the NHL, a true and true outlier if I ever saw one.
WG, yeah, I'm pleasantly surprised at how classy the Canucks fans in the building were. Sucks to be on the losing side, I know we all hated it in 2006.
The Canucks fans were the definition of class this game. They did everything that they should have.
Cheered their team and gave them a standing ovation in the dying seconds (game 7 of the finals is quite an accomplishment). Stayed in the stands through the presentations. Booed Bettman mercilessly. Cheered the captain when he hoisted the cup, and gave Thomas a good cheer as well.
As GM of the Canucks, this off season learn some humility and stop acting like you're a champion before you actually win it. Also doesn't hurt any to stop celebrating every single accomplishment that isn't a championship as if it is.

V3.0: "Do you have a shot at playing in the NHL with the Oilers? Are you better than JFJ?, Did you know we re-signed Ryan Jones?"
FINN: "GET ME A PEN!!!"

Is this really about winning now or are GM's thinking that this year's draft class is not that strong? Know that spOILer and fpb have made the case that there's a lot of talent, but still, there's a lot of willingness to deal this year - especially compared to last year.
I watched game 1 of the final at cbc.ca
ReplyDeleteRich: Numbers and history suggests otherwise.
ReplyDeleteOn good draft you have guys with 80 points in the 20-30 range .
In bad drafts you have guys with 55 points in the 10-20 range .
This draft is the first.
It's just a case of Shit NYI needs a lot of money right now to finance their new building, and WPG wanting to perform now.
Rich, my view is that this is a relatively weak class, but I think FPB, based on the numbers, thinks it might be pretty deep.
ReplyDeleteOops, and there he is. FPB can explain himself better than I can.
ReplyDeleteHow the hell do you get 270 PIM in a Euro league?
ReplyDeletespOILer: The guy looks like the Cal Clutterbuck of Europe. Taking a spin on youtube, it seems that he frequently takes charging penalties worthy of 5 minutes, 10 minutes, and the game.
ReplyDeleteThanks FPB.
ReplyDeleteBetter topic for another day to be sure.
ReplyDeleteLast year they picked a guy with 5% odds of turning into a ,50 PPG player in the NHL.
ReplyDeleteThey already have their next messier. They're drafting the supposed next Gretzky and maybe a Lowe too. Now they may have their next Finnish pest like tikkanen.
If only they could get a Coffey, a kurri and a fuhr.
I agree with SpOiler
ReplyDeleteI think this is a relatively weak draft. It is one of the reasons teams are able to pick up multiple picks near the draft ......Col- getting St Louis pick ditto Oil with LA's
Think last time we had 3 picks it was a weaker class like 2007
Another top prospect rankings, provided by my meticulous evaluation of all of available data.

Enjoy game 7 everyone!
TOJ :
ReplyDeleteTeams who had two picks in 2003:
PHI, LA (3),SJ, ANA, FLO
History seems to disagree.
I've been patient and longsuffering.
ReplyDeleteTime for my great reward.
Go Canucks.
David Conte was on Oilers Lunch today and Bob asked him what he liked about RNH.
ReplyDelete"Everything."
"He has skill and passion, what else is there?"
"Everyone else has bits and pieces but RNH has everything."
So Conte hates him and doesn't want us to take Couturier. I KNEW IT! :-)
ReplyDeleteYeah, he said a couple minutes later when Bob was asking about a couple other of the other guys that he's trying to talk as much as possible without saying anything.
ReplyDeleteI think he knows RNH will never get to him though.
Dale Tallon has let it be known that RNH is his guy if he gets past Edmonton and Colorado.
Apparently he told RNH at the combine that if Edmonton and Colorado pass on him to just start walking up to the stage.
Does Don Cherry deliberately get names wrong? Bieska? Lalongo? Peckman?
ReplyDeleteThanks for clearing that up.
ReplyDeleteHis dog's name used to be Blue, but he seems to be calling the dog something else now.
ReplyDeleteI'm astounded Cherry is still on television, and even more astounded that his replacement is Mike Milbury.
It sounded like he turned Blue into 2 syllables, Balue.
ReplyDeleteI think Barry Melrose would have been a better replacement, at least in terms of looking like a throwback from the past.
That's a penalty after all the other bullshit?? The NHL is taking over the game...
ReplyDeleteAs the Oilers spend years hoovering up high-end first round picks, the Bruins are getting their hands on the big one with a team completely devoid of first rounders (Seguin excepted).
ReplyDelete2 minutes for interferring with Kestler (giggle)
ReplyDeleteLouuuuuuuuuuuu.
ReplyDeleteIn all seriousness, couldn't happen to a nicer team. Hope this keeps up.
Should knock the smugness off the Canucks and some of their more annoying fans, and finally get rid of that insipid "Canucks Cup Quest" banner from TSN.
3-0 boston. I like this game.
ReplyDeleteBruins lead the Canucks 2-0 in Edmontonians too (Boychuck, Ference)
ReplyDeleteThe longsuffering continues.
ReplyDeleteSigh.
FPB is bang on with 2003 picks. Philly and Anaheim both had picks outside the top ten as well, and still set themselves up nicely for the next decade.
ReplyDeletePhilly walked away with Carter and Richards, and Anaheim snagged Perry and Getzlaf. Yowza, talk about a productive draft.
Bruins lead the Canucks 2-0 in Edmontonians too (Boychuck, Ference)
ReplyDeleteAnd Atlantic Canadians too; Marchand (Halifax), McQuaid (PEI) and Ryder (Nfld).
This is the greatest game I've seen in five years. How sweet it is.
ReplyDeleteAfter saving a shot and 2 rebounds in a game during the Winter Olympics, the colour commentator on the BBC said of Luongo "He's once, twice, three times a lady!"
ReplyDeleteTemujin,
ReplyDeleteWhatever people here right about Van fans, just know that we all appreciate you and your presence here. And we all feel for you and know where you're coming from.
Fans like you deserve a cup, and you'll get one at some point.
Maybe even tonight.
So, I don't think Luongo can return to Vancouver. He will be too hated. I feel sorry for the guy. Better to just have the team lose it than for it to largely fall on one guy.
ReplyDeleteIt will be interesting to see if he (avec contract) is tradable. Is he?
I mean "write"
ReplyDeleteI think CBJ and NYI wanting to move their picks speaks more to where they are as franchises rather than the quality of the draft.
ReplyDeleteCBJ - Howson is on the hot seat and I doubt he has a job next year without making the playoffs.
Also,
El Oh El ongo
Temujin deserves a cup just as soon as he switches teams.
ReplyDeleteBookie,
ReplyDeleteHis family still lives in Florida.
He makes 6.7MM in real money for the next 7 years, not sure if they can afford him though.
LOLongo makes $10MM in real money this year.
Lordy.
Dys have 6 goals in 6 2/3 games and now need 4 in 10 min.
ReplyDeleteHold fast!!!
Timmy Thomas be the best man on the ice.

ReplyDeleteNo idea why they didn't call Burrows on that play. I guess the refs are trying to deflect the whining that is sure to come their way.
ReplyDeleteWow.
ReplyDeleteCall Lucic for that, then don't call the interference on Paille keeping him from a break away???
Brutal.
As bad as not calling the flying elbow that hit Chara, but calling Chara for dumping Kessler during a crease scrum.
Best refs the NHL has eh?
I'm sure Gillis will still manage to while about the refs.
I guess Seidenberg ran interference there as well. Didn't see that one live.
ReplyDeleteBest line for the Bruins tonight; 2 smurphs and a hobbit (you can choose which is which)
ReplyDeleteRecchi can actually go out a champion if he wants to. Helluva a send off. I don't believe that guy is still in the league, let alone still effective.
ReplyDeleteAny chance that before this ends Chara starts the lawnmower on Burrows without asking? No one deserves it more.
ReplyDeleteFPB
ReplyDeleteHistorically bad draft years:
1999 draft where NYI had 4 picks, NYR, Phx and VCR had 2 each.
Ditto: 1996 where SJ, Wash, Edm and Phx had 2 each
Or 2007: Edm & StL 3 and Phx, SJ and Mtl with 2
Teams don't value first round picks as highly in what they perceive to be weak draft years.
This schadenfreude is delicious.
ReplyDeleteI suggest a crystal goblet of Dys fans' tears as an accompaniment.
Classy fans like Temujin excluded of course.
ReplyDeleteDSF
ReplyDeleteDSF
DSF?
Hahahah, this is just fantastic....man.....
ReplyDeleteThis sucks so much ass. I know you all can relate, we aren't that far removed from 2006.
ReplyDelete40 years of frustration. Why must I be a fan of this team.
>.<
Kesler is gonna hate that ice surface....P. Bergeron, not so much.
ReplyDeleteCongratulations to the Boston Bruins. Well done.
ReplyDeleteI love how Chara grabbed Thomas and pulled him up there. Timmy Thom is just one of the oddest stories in the NHL, a true and true outlier if I ever saw one.
ReplyDeleteGood on the fans in the building showing some class at the end.
ReplyDeleteI love how Chara grabbed Thomas and pulled him up there. Timmy Thom is just one of the oddest stories in the NHL, a true and true outlier if I ever saw one.
ReplyDeleteSo effing relieved. Next year's games won't be pure hell.
ReplyDeleteSedins were awful.
ReplyDeleteWG, yeah, I'm pleasantly surprised at how classy the Canucks fans in the building were. Sucks to be on the losing side, I know we all hated it in 2006.
ReplyDeleteHockey gods got behind BOS the second they released confetti after the CF win against SJS.
ReplyDeleteI couldn't wait to see how Bettman would react to the booing in a Canadian city. Just Awesome.
ReplyDeleteHow the heck does a guy like Thomas come out of nowhere (virtually) and win a Vezina and then Conn Smythe and Stanley at his age...just bizzare.
Another finals tradition. The booing of the Bettman.
ReplyDeleteThis calls for a Wisers Deluxe.
Booing Gary is fine for a second, but this is classless.
ReplyDeleteAssignment: You are the GM of the Vancouver Canucks. What do you do over the summer (in your role as GM)?
ReplyDeleteBooing Gary is fine for a second, but this is classless.
ReplyDeleteGary looked like he was going to have an aneurism shouting.
The fans redeemed themselves when they cheered when Chara lifted the cup.
Gotta respect the cup and the moment when the captain hoists it.
- Assignment: You are the GM of the Vancouver Canucks. What do you do over the summer (in your role as GM)?
ReplyDeleteCancel that order for 15,000 Luongo bobblehead dolls for Game 1?
The Canucks fans were the definition of class this game. They did everything that they should have.
ReplyDeleteCheered their team and gave them a standing ovation in the dying seconds (game 7 of the finals is quite an accomplishment).
Awesome series, the better team won.
ReplyDeleteAnd better yet, 8.75 days until the draft!
Screw it. I'll still take Lecavalier over the Sedins any day.
ReplyDelete*waves drunken finger aimlessly around room*
All is right and good in the world tonight
