ISS 42; Redline 64
Redline: The quintessential power checking centre competes like a ******* every shift and is tough to play against. Plays with a mean, nasty, chippy edge and works hard to neutralise and shut down the opposing team's top centre. Gets opponents off their game with habs of the stick and extracurricular activity after the whistle. Understands the defensize side of game and positions himself between the puck and his check - very solid technically. Tremendous character and work ethic. Strong skater with excellent balance and power in his stride. Strong on his stick in 1-on-1 battles for losse pucks. Always first into the corners. Responsible in all his assignments. Key penalty killer. Not offensively creative, but shows a few nice moves and a quicker stick than we thought. Goes right after opponents who try to take liberties with smaller teammates. Great teammate and leader.
A 6'1" fighter with local roots. Hm.
ReplyDeleteWould have liked this pick better if RNH didn't make him his bitch during the WHL playoffs.
ReplyDeleteNice to see Keegan Lowe go to Carolina with the previous pick. Far too much pressure on the kid if he goes to the Oil and Raleigh is a very nice place to live and work.
ReplyDeleteKind of surprised they didn't go with St. Croix if they were taking an Oil King
ReplyDeleteDamn - Lowe would have been a good pick. One spot too late.
ReplyDeleteJust like Prince, MacNeil.
Missed Keegan by one pick.
ReplyDeleteI actually liked Keegan with CAL's pick, CAR got him one pick earlier.
St. Croix would definitely have been a better pick. That said, Ewanyk was an honourable mention on Bob McKenzie's list.
ReplyDeletePutrid stats though.
Taking Musil and then Keegan would have been a bit much...whats next...trade for Jeff Tambellini?
ReplyDeleteDamn, I got stuff to do today but this draft is addictive!
ReplyDeleteDangerMan - is Dillon Simpson still available?
ReplyDeleteLT, you surprised the Oilers passed on Catennacci and St. Croix for Ewanyk?
ReplyDelete"is Dillon Simpson still available?"
ReplyDeleteAs a matter of fact he is....he should go soon though.

ReplyDeleteIf you read Gregor's column it says they were going to try to move up to take Klefbom. He was the guy they were taking with that pick all the way. Stu reassured Tambi that he shouldn't need to. They were helped by Dallas taking Oleksiak and Montreal Beaulieu.
They weren't taking McNeill.
Great to see Tambi and MBS staying the course on drafting size. If this year's playoffs have shown us anything, it's that rough and tumble hockey is back and size DOES matter.
ReplyDeleteMost people feel that Ewanyk did a great job shutting down RNH at ES in the first round. Got all the match-ups, was VERY impressive in the U18 - most felt he was easily going to be the #1 Oil King this year.
ReplyDeleteWould have picked him over St Croix anyday. St Croix won't play in the NHL without getting much quicker or learning where the corners are.
If you read Gregor's column it says they were going to try to move up to take Klefbom.
ReplyDeleteOh yeah, I totally believe that.
Hehe.. Maybe they can trade up for him, DangerMan.
ReplyDeleteLT mentioned Wruck in an earlier thread from the Oil Kings.
There is a suggestion that Detroit wanted Klefbom and then traded down once we selected him.
ReplyDeleteI think Wruck would be a good 4th rounder. I really like the way he plays...moreso than St. Croix.

ReplyDeleteTambellini looked depressed when MacNeil was taken.
spOILer: I don't think they expected that McNeill was going to be there at 19OV. If he had been there, from what I've been told by the individual currently living on my couch (aka "OGM"), McNeill would have been their pick.
ReplyDeleteThen Stu had saved Tambellini from making a bad pick.
ReplyDeleteI'd much rather see the Oilers sign an experienced 3rd line center than draft McNeill over Klefbom who has a much higher upside.
Always feel a bit of sympathy for Finns trying to speak English. Apparently it's a very difficult difference in languages.

How so? McNeill wasn't there. CHI saved them.
speeds: Surprised on Catenacci, but not St. Croix.
ReplyDeleteThen again, every pick so far attended the combine. Just saying.
ReplyDeleteI'm only repeating what Gregor wrote after talking with Oiler brass. Might be true, might not be, I suspect more details will come out.
ReplyDeleteI'd bet money Kale Kessy is a name coming up here.
ReplyDeleteLT: at least the bright side is, there aren't many reaches thus far. Just not sure about the substance so far.
ReplyDeleteKale Kessy would make some sense to happen very shortly
ReplyDeleteI think this is a fairly typical MBS draft. First three selections were certainly in the range, his third and fourth rounds are the Motin-Abney-Hesketh rounds and then he goes back to plucking guys we're more familiar with.
ReplyDeleteThe goalie is a huge reach imo, but this guy (Ewanyk) is well known and closed late as a prospect.
Dillon Simpson.
ReplyDeleteAnd the next pick is......Dillon Simpson....haha
ReplyDeleteOilers took Dillon Simpson in the 4th.

ReplyDelete--10:12: Tambellini pacing, walking circles around Edmonton's table. Something on his mind, or just can't wait to take Musil?
I just pictured Mr. Krabs pacing back and for clicking his feet on the floor as he goes.
Hehe...nice.
ReplyDeleteIf CAR didn't spoil the party they would have taken Musil, Lowe, and Simpson.
ReplyDeleteHmmmmm.
I like Musil and prefer Lowe to Ewanyk at that spot.
Have no idea about Simpson.
WG: Would have preferred Lowe as well.
ReplyDeleteThe goalie is a huge reach imo.
ReplyDeleteFor what it's worth, the goalie was the best European ranked goalie on CSB.
I'm more fumed at taking Musil at 31 though. His upside compares to Ladislav Smid.
Rattie, Grimaldi, or even Mayfield would have been wiser selections

And you know this of course because you are an NHL scout, have attended numerous games played by each and tracked their progress over the past year.
