ISS: 27; Bob McKenzie 41; Redline 17
- TSN: Highly touted in the Czech Republic for several years, one of the rare players to compete in three U-18 championships. Good genes, being the son of a former NHLer and a tennis pro, and nephew of Bobby Holik. Strengths - Has good gap control and active stick. He can play a physical game given his size and strength. Has a hard shot, good character and leadership abilities. Weaknesses - Shot lacks accuracy, takes too long to shoot, feet are below average, hands aren't great, not a puck carrier, dead ends himself. Could be more consistent with his physical play.
- Redline report: His father, Frank, was a longtime NHL defenseman and currently a highly respected scout. David has excellent size and strength and plays a rugged brand of hockey with a bit of a mean streak. He reads developing plays well and uses anticipation to break up plays before they become dangerous. He's got good hockey sense in all three zones, but his offensive upside is limited due to his mediocre point shot.
Would have liked Jenner, Grimaldi, Rattie instead.
ReplyDeleteI think this is an excellent pick. Musil isn't a fancy player, but he's got blood lines, has real toughness and once again has experience in a league where progress is done against quality kids.
ReplyDeleteExcellent draft so far.
Nice pick, even though I was going Jenner there.
ReplyDeletePetry, Marincin, Klefbom, Teubert, Musil, Plante and Blain.
Pretty good set of defense prospects.
Any news on the Smyth hold-up?
I think there are enough question marks with Musil's game that people can rightly question if we took him early based on "other" factors.
ReplyDeleteMcKenzie had him ten spots later, which is significant. Think I would have preferred Jenner.
We are still missing the impact top-pairing guy from that list, maybe next draft...
ReplyDeletejon k: I'd disagree. ISS has him at 27, he certainly was on everyone's radar. I woudn't call it a reach pick at all.
ReplyDeleteRedline ranks him as the 5th best defender in the entire draft.
Bob McKenzie tweeted the following...
ReplyDeleteRyan Smyth update: LA-EDM had agreed to deal (Brule and a pick), Smyth waived NTC but all reportedly fell apart over Brule's health.
LA still talking to EDM but also CGY, which will have financial flexibility to do Smyth deal as soon as Regher trade to BUF is final.
Oh COME ON.
Great pick. Musil can step in and shut down in the next two years. Not as exciting as Jenner or Grimaldi, but Musil was also ranked as a top 10 prospect in this draft not long ago.
ReplyDeleteJon K: I don't think 10 spots is significant in this draft, conventional wisdom has been it's pretty muddled between 20 and 50 or so.
ReplyDeleteThink Prince slides to 61, and if he does, think EDM would take him?
LT: That's fair. I have a bias in that I consider McKenzie's list as the consensus for most scouts.
ReplyDeleteThe Oilers are a really interesting candidate to make an RFA offer sheet this year. The prospect/young player cupboard is now full with dmen and forwards. You could argue the 2012 pick is valuable, but a good RFA pick up plus Smyth and a veteran dman or two and that pick would not be a lottery pick.
ReplyDeleteVoracek seems like an interesting target given Philly's cap space.
Woodlief loved Musil. I would have preferred 6'3" sniper Ritchie, but this is a safe pick.
ReplyDeletespeeds: I'd make a deal right now to move up and get Prince. Way undervalued now.
ReplyDeleteEdmondson. Oilers wanted him (or so I was told).
@Rick... you weren't going to get that top pairing guy at 31 anyhow. With the projected depth we now have on the blueline, I'm just hoping that a couple of them can progress enough in the next couple of years that we can put together a package to get that #1 guy when he becomes available.
ReplyDeletesenda :: a person who mails something in Boston
Ok, so all conditional congratulations to Tambellini for his first good hockey trade can be retracted. He's back to dithering.
ReplyDeleteRQ: lol, true. That would have been a beauty trade, though.
ReplyDeleteRick: I think it's too early to say we don't have that top guy. Most of the best D prospects that the Oilers have were drafted this year or last. A guy like Marincin or Klefbom could end up developing into a top 1 or 2 option in a few years.
ReplyDeleteThat's the thing about defencmen - the long development cycles means that you need to get a whole bunch of prospects and see where they go.
Just felt Mayfield would have been the better defenceman if they were going for a defense.
ReplyDeleteOf course we won't know until 2 years.
Musil is an April birthday - so that's encouraging.
I wonder if the second round is the most traded draft pick? 14 of the 30 2nd round picks this year are traded picks.
ReplyDeleteLT, does SMB know the nickname that you've given him? He must have heard about it by now?
ReplyDeleteSJ must really like Nieto. Haha.
ReplyDeletespock
I don't mind this at all, in fact I was calling for this for a long time when Musil was falling so far.
ReplyDeleteThis guy was a projected lottery pick in some circles at one time. If they can get him in the right frame of mind he could be a rock of a shut down guy for a long time.
With Nieto gone, only Prince remains from my top 30. how about your top 30 LT, picked pretty clean by now?
ReplyDeleteIs Phillips still available?
ReplyDeleteStefan:
ReplyDeleteI wasn't expecting a top pairing guy at 31, that's more a "what could have been" in the first with Larsson, Hamilton and Murphy sliding.
One of the guys we have could develop to that kind of player, but if we're doing a "Chicago" rebuild, we don't have our Duncan Keith.
Catanacci, Prince, Rattie (unless they were picked and I missed it).
ReplyDeleteNo, sorry he went 28th.
ReplyDeleteRattie is gone, other 2 still avail for now.
ReplyDeleteJames L,
ReplyDeleteI don't know why LA would care about Brule's health anyway. Aren't they signing him to chauffeur the big stars around in his truck?
I can't hate on Brule, though, he just seems to be too decent a person.
I loved how the Oilers really wheeled and dealed with their picks this time. Traded up just like they told us.
ReplyDeleteI don't know why LA would care about Brule's health anyway. Aren't they signing him to chauffeur the big stars around in his truck?
ReplyDeleteCan't buy out a guy on IR
Every year!!! I don't know why Matty writes that "they tried hard but couldn't get it done" story every year.
ReplyDeleteNothing wrong w/Musil. Solid draft at this point. Team needs center and d-men and has consistently been picking the highest rated available at each position when their turn comes around.
ReplyDeleteLT: Because then he can just copy and paste the year and the player they wanted, then take a half day. ;)
ReplyDeleteTeam needs center and d-men and has consistently been picking the highest rated available at each position when their turn comes around.
ReplyDeleteWell, Musil wasn't the highest rated, right?
Looks like the deal is waiting on Brule's medical clearance.

I'd hope Steve has an alternate package in place in case this falls through.
Cgy takes Wothersppon.
ReplyDeleteI'm hoping for Adam Lowry.
ReplyDeleteFilatov for 66th overall. Talk about getting 15 cents on the dollar.
ReplyDeleteGibson interviews were interesting. He and his parents seemed to be sporting 3 different accents between them.
ReplyDeleteLoved how a Finnish kid from the Q speaks English with a French-Canadian accent. Hockey rules.
Tanguay extended in Calgary apparently-that will make it tough to fit Smytty(assuming they can't get something worked out with LA)
ReplyDeleteTanguay signs in Calgary. $17 mill over 3 years. Calgary's out of the Smyth races (if Smyth every really had them in it).
ReplyDeleteWell, Musil wasn't the highest rated, right?
ReplyDeleteHe was highest-rated Dman on RLR'S list by far and away.
FUCK. Wanted Shane Prince.
ReplyDeleteWhat channel is this on or what site is it on.
ReplyDeleteSorry, $17 mill over 5 years.
ReplyDeletenhl.com
ReplyDeleteNHL network is carrying it and NHL.com is streaming it, but it is terrible to watch as they are not announcing the picks and Button continually is offering his "expert" opinion.
ReplyDelete630 ched is the best bet.
I like the pick. Hockey News had him at 23rd along with the other rankings. Definitely not a reach pick.
ReplyDeleteHas Saad been taken yet?
ReplyDeleteI would have rather had Jenner.
ReplyDeleteI do wonder about Jurco going to Detroit though. I hope they haven't stolen another draft!
ReplyDeleteMusil is a great pick. First round talent. I'm a fan.
