Still, he's delivered on his opportunity and done it in a big way. Entering this year, McDonald had played in 226 regular season games for the Oilers AHL teams, scoring 34 goals. This season, McDonald has played 78 games and popped 40 goals. The two quality linemates, more powerplay time and confidence have contributed to his success this year. Copper and Blue's Lisa McRitchie did a terrific interview with him here.
Now, McDonald is a 26-year old will be looking for a contract this summer with an NHL portion on the deal (a 2-way contract similar to the one he had with the Oilers until this season). McDonald has done everything possible to get that contract and I expect he'll get it. Whether or not the Oilers are the team he signs with is out there in the ether.

Nation Radio is on again today at noon on Team 1260, your emails are welcome at nationradio@team1260.com any time this morning. Among the guests scheduled to appear:
- Terry Jones, from the Edmonton Sun. He wrote an interesting article Thursday about the arena situation. We'll talk about that and more.
- James Mirtle of the Globe and Mail. Mirtle is a brilliant young writer who is running circles around mainstream media while still being able to talk advanced stats with aplomb.
- Bob Ridley, Medicine Hat Tigers play by play man since Christ was a kid.
- Gene Principe of Rogers Sportsnet. We'll talk about how he sees this summer rolling out for the Oilers.
- Jim Byers, OKC play by play man (we'll talk about the playoffs, I believe they need one more win to get in).
- Jason McKee, coach of the AJHL Spruce Grove Saints. We'll talk about the big win against Camrose and the next challenge.

Gene Principe of Rogers Sportsnet. We'll talk about how he sees this summer rolling out for the Oilers.
ReplyDeleteI understand that you have to fill a couple of hours of air-time, but Eugene?
Maybe he'll tell us what he sees in rhyming couplets.
I'm hungry.
What's the over/under on Gene delivering his first pun?
ReplyDeleteHope that OKC makes the playoffs. Would be nice to see some of these prospects earn a little more ice time.
Tell Gene that everyone is sick of him.
ReplyDeleteLT: hopefully you can keep in touch with the OKC guy if they get on a little roll or at the very least do an exit interview with him.
ReplyDeleteDennis: He's great, really interesting fellow. This will be the third time I've interviewed him and there's never enough time. Really smart fellow.
ReplyDeleteMeh,
ReplyDeleteMcDonald has always had a good shot, but he has 18 PP goals. Last night he had 10 shots. I don't see him playing much PP on the Oilers.
Guys who break out at age 26 in the AHL don't usually go on to have great NHL careers.
He is also -1 and although he has had a few scraps, he doesn't seem like a bottom sixer. (Although this is kind of tough to tell looking at box cars.)
Tell Gene that everyone is sick of him.
ReplyDeletePerhaps you should reconsider your ability to speak on behalf of "everyone".
I think he's great. He appears to be a genuinely nice guy. I'll take him over that pimp Millons any day of the week.
Does OKC need one point or one win to clinch a spot? If they make it who goes back from the Oil roster to play in the playoffs?
ReplyDeleteLighten up Ducey. Gene is indeed a nice guy, probably a guy I'd have a brewski with, but his schtick is tired and lame, no?
ReplyDeleteMcDonald looks to be a much better value signing than Jones.
ReplyDeleteI don't know in which way he doesn't seem like a bottom sixer. To me he looks exactly like one.
I think Gene's a little overexposed, and he's not the only one.
I see that as the biggest problem with having him on.
Plus the bad jokes.
And the lack of insight.
McKenzie tweets...
ReplyDeleteThoughts are with Tampa asst coach and all around good guy Wayne Fleming, who has been diagnosed with a brain tumor.
Man...It's been a rough week.
I ran into Gene Principe at YEG the day after the Blues routed the Oilers two xmas's ago. We chatted for about half an hour as we waited for our respective flights.
ReplyDeleteHe's a true fan, a great guy, a class act, and has some great insight about the Oilers.
I've always got time for a good guy that loves hockey. Bring on the Gene!
ReplyDeleteI'd be interested in asking Terry what the difference in access to the team has been over the years.
... and I like rhyming. Its fun.
ReplyDeleteRhyming's okay, but I hate to see him pun.
ReplyDeleteI don't know in which way he doesn't seem like a bottom sixer. To me he looks exactly like one.
ReplyDelete23 pts and -25 last year at age 25.
Now he is playing with two of the top players in the AHL and getting tons of PP time and he gets 40.
In the bottom six in the NHL his primary job will be checking and providing grit. The NHLE of last season would be the reasonable expectation for his upside.
15 pts and a terrible +/- for a 27 year old doesn't excite me much.
15 pts and a terrible +/- for a 27 year old doesn't excite me much.
ReplyDeleteYou're just using his previous stats as a crutch.
I met Gene Principe a couple years back while I was cutting grass for the City of Edmonton.
ReplyDeleteHe's just a down to earth nice guy. I have no problem with him whatsoever. There is always room for a nice guy on TV.
There is always room for a nice guy on TV.
ReplyDeleteWhen he appears, I get up to go pee.
Gene may be a great guy but his act is lame.
ReplyDeleteif there's insight inside of him, it's being obstructed by a wall of annoyance.
Good day.
ReplyDeleteEveryone needs a good groan now and then, and Gene is a good man who delivers whenever given the opportunity. If you don't like it, then use the skill that came with your "y" chromosome and tune out whatever you don't want to hear. If you are one of the few here not equipped with a "y" chromosome, you can still work on developing this skill. It is well worth the time invested. ;-D
@Clarkenstein
Hartikainen, Omark, O'Marra, VandeVelde and Petry will go back to OKC.

speaking of gene while listening to buck and mccarver tormenting me from Boston, it reminds me of that great idea Principal Skinner once had of luring all the the hardcases to the boiler room and keeping them out of sight.
ReplyDeletethis is matheson's list from today:
ReplyDeleteJeff Petry, Hartikainen, Chris VandeVelde, Ryan O’Marra, Liam Reddox and Taylor Chorney.
Dennis - ...And then completely forget about them until the end of the episode?
ReplyDeleteDoes that mean Reddox throuhg waivers? Not that I would worry about it at all.
ReplyDeleteGene Principe "delivers" on making you "groan," Louise?
ReplyDeleteInteresting.
:)
Clarkenstein: I think OKC needs one point to clinch, as they'd win their tiebreakers.

Yeah, I like 85 but I don't think we would need to be tore up if someone claimed him.
ReplyDeleteThe article doesn't spell it out but if Chicago/OKC tie on non-shootout wins OKC would win on the basis of the season series. Abbotsford would lose on the non-shootout win tiebreaker. I think that is right, anyways.
ReplyDeleteSO if the Barons get the point, Calgary is out on two fronts!
ReplyDeleteI'm pretty sure Reddox was not on the clear day list and not eligible to play in the AHL playoffs.

ReplyDeleteI'll speak to Gene being a good guy as well. My friend was around meeting one of the players on an opposing team he knew and Sportsnet was wrapping up for the night and Gene went around and personally and individually thanked all the arena and tv crew who were around for all their hard work that night. I can't dislike a guy like that no matter how lame his schtick might be.

Big Ducks-Kings coming up. For the Kings, last game of the season might mean the difference between finishing in 4th or 8th place.
ReplyDeleteCouturier, 1 G, +1, 2nd star today in a win, Huberdeau 1 G, EV, 3rd star in his team's first loss this postseason.
ReplyDeleteI'd say a minus 1 in a game your team loses 9-1 isn't too rough a night.
ReplyDeleteOther than the pounding your squad took I mean.
Kytnar (House Plante) is a funny scoring play.

ReplyDeleteGogliano:
ReplyDeleteYeah, that LA result (and the next two days in general) could have a big effect on where EDM's 2nd 1st rounder would sit going into the playoffs.
Could be anywhere from 18th-22nd after tomorrow's games, though its value is in the air including the playoffs due to the way picks 27-30 are awarded.
There are a lot of possible combinations with potential OT results, but with an LA win, the pick won't be better than 20th before the playoffs start, 20th-22nd.
An LA loss of any kind means the pick will be either 18th or 19th. CHI could catch them either way, but would need a win tomorrow if LA loses in OT or SO tonight.
Go Ducks!!!
In terms of value, the outcome of tonight's LA/ANA game is probably worth a something like a mid 3rd round pick to the Oilers, as that's probably what a team could net in trading down* from 18,19 to 20, 21, 22**.
ReplyDelete* Averaging all the different trade down values possible with those potential seedings
** Subject to playoff outcomes.
Jake70:
ReplyDeleteTambellini have anything interesting to say?
john....as I was posting the link, the interview was just wrapping up...it sounded like Tambellinini was right there with the radio guy.....what I caught was Tambellini "not happy" with Oilers record, but happy with draft position and for the big picture organizationally he is happy with where things are....then they finished the interview
ReplyDeleteKytnar's house plant has more interesting things to say than v3.0
ReplyDeleteThe plant looks less stunned as well.
OKC is in.
ReplyDeleteBe interesting to see how they do, considering they made their run without a lot of quality players.
what I caught was Tambellini "not happy" with Oilers record...
ReplyDeleteA bold move, Cotton - let's see if it pays off.
Hartikainin, Omark, Vandvelde, Reddox, Petry, Omarra all up with the Oilers, unless I am missing something, that is impressive for that Barons team to string these wins together to get into playoffs. Deslauriers in a zone perhaps?
ReplyDeleteI don't want the Kings to play the Dys in the first round because LA just can't score anymore without Williams and Kopitar in the lineup.
ReplyDeletejake - yup, and I imagine everyone but Omark goes back (might play in WC's)...could go on a nice run.
ReplyDeleteBacking up what Dennis said, the Kings have been on the PP for most of the first period and haven't really been dangerous.
ReplyDeleteWhy did it have to be Kopitar? Damn.
Apparently Deslauriers has been excellent the last couple of weeks. Neal over at Copper and Blue has been giving game reports all year.
ReplyDeleteIts the coach down there that interests me. He loses two thirds of his top line halfway through the year when Omark and Reddox get called up. And then with a playoff spot on the line he loses one of his top Dman in Petry as well as three pretty big contributors in Hartikainen, Vandevelde and O'Marra.
And they just keep on chugging.
Impressive to me is how guys came along. Saw the Barons here in November and Vandevelde was invisible. Kytnar too. And Hartikainen did very little. All rookie pros so not a surprise.
Hartikainen gets bumped up and goes on a tear. Vandevelde rounds into form. They get called up and Kytnar and this House kid and the ECHL kid (Arcabello?) all contribute.
Thats damn good coaching I think.
And as soon as it goes to 4 on 4 the Ducks score. 1-0.
ReplyDeleteBD: Yeah it was more on the debacle side of things than actual performance.
ReplyDeleteNo one feels good in a 9-1 loss.

Does everyone use their airport code as a sign of their location on twitter? Or is it some bizarre thing that only Edmonton does? Confused.
ReplyDeleteKesler goes down awkwardly and leaves the game.
ReplyDeleteMaybe a knee or an ankle.
That smell is a city collectively shitting its pants.
Fpz - yeah and another blowout tonight by the sounds of it. Bruce s tweeting about the game and it sounds like Bunz has been very good for Medicine Hat and the Red Deer goalie has been awful.
Kesler back on the ice now.

Sounds like Omark really wants to play at WC. Can't say I blame him.
2-0 Anaheim now. What a crazy game.
ReplyDeleteDoes everyone use their airport code as a sign of their location on twitter?
ReplyDeleteI gave up on that nonsense when I saw somebody tag a post about the City Centre Airport debate with #YEG.
I think everyone does it, though.

Weekes low point was the night in December when Taylor Hall scored in OT to beat the Blues. Andy MacDonald carried the puck through the neutral zone, stumbled and hit his head on Shawn Horcoff's knee and turned the puck over.
ReplyDeleteRyan Whitney zips a pass up ice to Hall, who storms in and scores a beauty to end the game.
EXCEPT WEEKES WAS STILL BACK AT THE MCDONALD PLAY.
"Im surprised the refs didn't call that, and now they're meeting at center ice!" he said hopefully (or some such).
He would NOT let it go, and Mark Lee doesn't understand the rules well enough to throw Weekes out of the booth.
Anyway, it went on forever, Blues leave the ice, Oilers waive at the crowd, crowds leaving and Weekes is still rambling on.
I don't know what the Oilers did to Weekes during his career, but there has to be a 16-0 game in there somewhere.
LT: In all honesty I think he was just concerned for the guy. He did seem badly injured and I was kind of surprised they didn't blow the play dead.
ReplyDelete''In the case where it is obvious that a player has sustained a serious injury, the Referee and/or Linesman may stop the play immediately.''
They damn well could have called it.
Weekes used to play for New Jersey, right? Maybe he's still mad about Gretzky's "Mickey Mouse" comment.
ReplyDeleteMedicine Hat is pretty much kicking Red Deer in the family jewels.
ReplyDeleteSaskatoon loses in OT, now both Red Deer and Saskatoon have lost both home games and are down 2-0.
ReplyDeleteIf Sask gets bounced, is it a given that Schenn draws in for the playoffs in LA, or would that burn a year of his ELC and thus LA might not be interested?
I would assume OKC would sign Hamilton to an ATO if Sask gets bounced, bu I wonder if he'd draw right into the lineup, or just practice with the team?
Speeds - I too have been following the Kings 1st round draft pick (held by Oilers) implications over the last week. Watching the game as we speak.
ReplyDeleteAn Anaheim win today in regulation and the Oilers stand at 19. If Chicago follows up with a point tomorrow (SJ is winning at the moment, so Detroit may have nothing to play for tomorrow), that's an 18th overall pick. This is crucial - 18 as opposed to 22-24 (where the Kings were sitting at before their implosion this week).
Of importance to note - the Kings cannot advance to the third round - should they do so, the pick will be anywhere from 27-30th. I recall heckling/trolling my Habs buddy last year along the same lines after they defeated Pittsburgh in the playoffs - the 15th overall pick became 27th, the 45th became 57, the 65th became 87th and so on. I suspect LA won't go far in the playoffs without Kopitar and Williams.
On the same line of thinking, we should cheer any of Montreal (ugh), Buffalo, and NYR to advance to the Eastern Conference Finals - that would result the Kings pick to be even higher. 16th overall is the highest that pick can go.
Sheer dumb luck. It's talked alot on these parts of the internets. With respect to drafts, the Oilers certainly appear to have had plenty of it. Injuries to literally all their top players (Hemsky, Hall, Gagner, Horcoff, Whitney) since the trade deadline, many of them unprecedented and unusual. With regards to the Kings 1st rounder, injuries to Kopitar and Williams, and a Dustin Penner slump which after tonight, will mark 11 games without a point.
3-0 Anaheim as we speak.
Refreshing.
PJO:
ReplyDeleteThat 27-30 conference final rule bit ANA extremely hard last year, along with the results of one shootout.
They received PHI's 2010 1st as part of the Pronger trade. NYR and PHI had that shootout in the last game of the season where the winner made the playoffs and the loser was out. NYR lost and got the 10th OV draft pick, while PHI just barely made the playoffs and then went to the final.
So ANA's acquired pick went from 10th (if PHI had lost that shootout and missed the playoffs) to 29th.
Matheson has been recently throwing tidbits in his Sunday column that both the Oilers and Smyth both have regrets on how things went down, and that Smyth could end up coming back after his contract expires (1 more year left).
ReplyDeleteMy heart has been broken too many times with regards to rumours (Lindros, Jagr, etc.), and alot has to go right for it to happen:
1. Word is Smyth and his family are enjoying LA - who honestly wouldn't?
2. Lombardi regards Smyth highly - a nice retirement contract offer can change things quickly.
That being said, I wonder if the Oilers this summer offer say, the 2012 second rounder and Omark, whether Dean Lombardi bites.
Will be an interesting summer, especially with the ~27M or so cap space to work with. If I'm Tambo, I'm massively overpaying good free agents to 1-2 year deals.
What will likely happen is a thinly veiled tank. How much of a raise will Jason Strudwick get this summer?
It's hard to say if the Kings would care all that much about burning a year of Schenn's ELC - he can burn a year of his ELC but not have it count as one of his 7 years towards UFA status. They may even want to burn that year, if possible, to get rid of his bonuses a year earlier if they project him to re-sign for less than his current cap hit after this contract.
ReplyDeleteOf course, the bonuses do hold the advantage of allowing you to exceed the cap if you so choose...
ReplyDeleteWord verification: stome
LT, is that some sort of sign the oilers should be looking at Strome?
PJO it would not cost nearly that much to get Smyth.
ReplyDeleteI bet if LA puts Smyth on waivers at that cap hit there are less than teams that would take him for nothing. Maybe less than three.
Think what LA could do with 6.5 million of cap room. They could get a much better player than a 35 year old slow often injured (although not this year) Ryan Smyth.
WHat happened to Red Deer and their goaltending?
ReplyDeleteBadly outshooting MH both games getting killed now 14-1 in two games, shut out in their own bar.
So called MVP WHL allstar Koemper shatting the bed again tonight allowing around a .750 save percentage for the second night in a row.
Anyone watching this? Is the goalie that bad and Bunz that good ?
If RNH can't even get a point in two games in juniors when it counts, how good can he be?
Pulling off more of a Seguin than a Hall here.
So ANA's acquired pick went from 10th (if PHI had lost that shootout and missed the playoffs) to 29th.
ReplyDeleteYup. I recall that saga last year.
That said, the hockey gods balanced the ledger by allowing Fowler and Etem fall to 12th and 29th respectively.
____________
If it's 18th overall, you wonder what kind of a package 18th + 31st can land?
Is that enough to move in the top 10? Or do you have to add in the 61st?
I have no problems being aggressive at the draft (San Jose is famous for this - see Couture) if the scouts are confident enough in the player being moved up for. I also have more confidence with Stu MacGregor as opposed to Kevin "never-met-a-prospect-I-don't-like" Prendergast.
On the flip side, moving up to draft 22nd (see 2007) is considerably riskier and generally not advisable.
It will be interesting to see what Tambo does at the draft. As YKOil pointed out, Lowe paid a premium in 2007 to move up in a weak draft, while did not extract anywhere near fair market value in 2003 in what was one of the best 1st round drafts in NHL history.
Lets hope the puppet is better in this respect.
I think there's a good chance EDM could find a trading partner in CAL if they want to move up.
ReplyDeleteCAL is now locked in to draft 13th (before the lottery, although they have a 98+% chance of staying at 13 even after the lottery).
They don't have a 2nd or a 3rd, while EDM has a 2nd and two 3rds*. So if LA's pick ends up at 19, they certainly have the ammo to move up to 13, and a team that may want to move down for some more picks.
Nos, if they don't really care which guy they get at the top, or if they like a guy at #1 that they are pretty sure will be there at 3 or 4, maybe they are willing to trade down to, say, 4, and use whatever they get to trade down from 1/2 to move up again from 13? Who knows?
*Interestingly enough one of those 3rd is actually CAL's, from the Staios trade
This was a great night for Edmonton. The cherry on top would be a Chicago end-of-season victory to push LAK into 8th, followed by a 1st round flame-out.
ReplyDeleteI think there's a good chance EDM could find a trading partner in CAL if they want to move up.
ReplyDeleteI considered this - that said, I probably would say no to 18 + 31 to move down 5 spots, given the consensus there is a drop off after the top 10-11 picks.
18 + 61 and it's a deal.
Does 19, 61, and 73/91 get you 13 OV, if the team at 13 wants to pick up some extra picks*? Can't say for sure, but I would think there's a chance depending on their draft board and on the other offers.
ReplyDeleteAnd, if it does, how far up can you move from 13 with an offer of 13 + 31? 8th, 9th, 10th?
And would a team in the Oilers position, with seemingly a bunch of prospect depth already, rather pick 1st/2nd + 9th, or 1st/2nd + 19th + 31st + 61st + 73rd/91st, given the choice?
* Obviously if they'd go for your offer of 18/19 + 61, all the better.
LA beat Phoenix in OT on Wed night.
ReplyDeleteIf they had lost that in reg and Dallas wins tomorrow, LA would have missed the playoffs and we would have gotten the 14 pick !
LA beat Phoenix in OT on Wed night.
ReplyDeleteIf they had lost that in reg and Dallas wins tomorrow, LA would have missed the playoffs and we would have gotten the 14 pick !
If ifs and buts were candies and nuts, we'd all have a merry xmas.
First, you can't disregard that LA did beat Phoenix. Second, even if LA had lost that game, they likely play with more desperation in this 2 game mini-series with LA.
On the flip side of the coin - if LA won today, they would have finished 4th and the Oilers would be drafting 22nd.
And another thing; let's not hear anymore griping over Rollie getting injured in '06.
ReplyDeleteFirst, you can't disregard that the play did injur him. Second, even if he had escaped that play without injury, Bergeron likely throws guys at him with more desperation the rest of the game.
We absolutely shouldn't spend even a second on a hockey blog thinking about things that could have very easily gone our team's way.
Thanks for setting us straight.
If ifs and buts were candies and nuts, we'd all have a merry xmas.
ReplyDeleteYou obviously don't have kids. Candies and nuts don't cut it anymore.
That being said, I wonder if the Oilers this summer offer say, the 2012 second rounder and Omark, whether Dean Lombardi bites.
Why in the world would you trade Penner and then give up a real prospect for Smyth?
Penner is 28 and makes $4.25 M. He has 42 pts. Smyth is 35 and costs $6.25. He has 47 pts.
I like Smyth as much as anyone, but that contract was terrible. Smyth has averaged about 55 points a year through out it.
And I know patience is in rare supply these days, but for goodness sakes, Omark will likely be outscoring Smyth in two years.
If you really need to watch an aged Ryan Smyth in Oilers silks, wait a year. Or give Lombardi Ryan Omarra "back". Smyth at that contract just isn't worth more.
Getting over '06 - Nice seeing Gagne score that empty netter on Carolina, in Carolina. I am not bitter...lol.
ReplyDelete
