That old Tiger team--the won that won everything in 1984--was just plain awful when these two kids arrived. However, the procurement department drafted well over a period of years and made some good deals in an effort to climb out of baseball's second division.
I remember the Tigers before the kids arrived because they kept hiring former Expos (when your team is picking up Expos rejects and its 1975 then your team is in big freaking trouble).
The impact rookies kept coming:
- 1976: Mark Fidrych, Jason Thompson
- 1977: Jack Morris, Lance Parrish, Alan Trammel, Lou Whitaker, Steve Kemp
- 1979: Kirk Gibson, Tom Brookens, Lynn Jones, Dan Petry
- 2007: Sam Gagner, Tom Gilbert, Andrew Cogliano
- 2008: Theo Peckham, Liam Reddox
- 2009: Taylor Chorney, Jeff Deslauriers
- 2010: Taylor Hall, Jordan Eberle, Magnus Pääjärvi, Devan Dubnyk, Linus Omark, Jeff Petry, Ryan O'Marra
--
This is the final week of the regular season, so a reminder that the reasonable expectations series starts Monday. That should take us to early May and then it's the draft, tracers and maybe I'll finally get around to that rookie series.
What would you like to see on the blog?

What would I like to See on the blog?
ReplyDeleteWell.
Ornamental flesh would be a heckuva start,
I think you have a lot of nerve calling Reddox and Deslauriers quality rookies. One couldn't keep his job and the other only has one because of injuries.
ReplyDeleteI think he's listing the rookies that played. I don't get the ire MZU.
ReplyDeleteAlso Reddox may only have his job due to injuries, but one would argue that he should have had one from the very start over JFJ, SMac, and Fraiser.
Even Bob McKenzie mentioned that Reddox could help a lot of teams and should be plucked off the waiver wire. 4th like guy that can PK...yeah we don't need any of those =).
More than anything else, I'd like this blog to follow a winning team.
ReplyDeleteOut of your scope; I know. But I always worry that this team will end up like more of a St. Louis and less like the Pittsburgh we were promised.
What I'd like to see this time of year is daily discussions on how deep the Oil could go in the playoffs. I'd like to talk about the final week of the season and how this last week of games could put them in 1st place! I'd like to talk about possible first round matchups and who we would rather play and why. I'd like to talk about Taylor Hall and wheather he could pot his 50th this final week. Oh, so many things I'd like to talk about... sigh....but I don't have time, I've got to get my list off to the Easter Bunny.
ReplyDelete1. Like Hoos said, stories about a winning Oilers' team.
ReplyDelete2. I know its sort of Pelletier's thing, but maybe some hockey history posts interspersed with the Oilers news? I think there are tons of good stories to tell, and you might as well be the one to tell us.
hey the future is so bright i gotta wear shades.. so this year was not as good as I wanted but if you are not going anywhere in playoffs why bother get a the best players you can. Like David Lee Roth said Summit or Plummet no in between.
ReplyDeleteNext year we will make halfway up the Mountain that will attract a few free agents that want to get on the bus.
I would like to see them beat the Nucks again so they can start panicking before playoffs
where have all the ladies gone?
ReplyDeleteWhat I would like to see is an interview with the National Post's Sean McIndoe regarding the Oilers. He is funny, and honest. Today, in a column on the five worse NHL teams, he stated this about the Edmonton Oilers.
ReplyDeleteWhere it all went wrong
The team's talented rookie forwards were clearly overconfident, partly due to youth and inexperience but mostly due to shooting on Nikolai Khabibulin in practice every day.
He also gave Reason for optimism and Future outlook.
What I would like to see:
ReplyDeleteStan Weir.
Superman's mom.
More Euro updates, did you have a secret scout over there? We have a sweet Swede core coming along, and the Detroit model says good things come in 5-packs.
More stories about Tiger Goldstick, Bill Hunter, Eddie Shore's wheat farm, early 1970's hockey and rock concerts @ the Gardens - your usual greatness.
Loved those Tigers teams! Pre-steroids baseball.
I also suggest all-decade teams, unsung profiles, where are they now, and perhaps a travel guide for Oklahoma City. How far is Wichita, literally and figuratively (ie. is our farm getting stronger)
Happy Springtime Lowetiders!
largolen = the mirthful sound between a laugh and a gurgle, when reading Rexall's Grade 9 letter to the mayor
LT,
ReplyDeleteLong time reader of this blog, but first time poster. I really appreciate all the time and energy you put into this blog- it has built an amazing online community of passionate fans. In its ability to bring people together to talk about not just the oilers, but about the city of edmonton, sports, family, etc. it is to my mind pretty much the definition of open, public, democratic discourse in action. Just people coming together to talk about things they are passionate about.
So thank you so much. The pathos and joys of this game, as well as the pathos and joys of life in general, shine through on this blog.
As for things I'd like to see on this blog, I would respectfully ask for two general directions which content could go into:
1) Hard-hitting interviews with those in charge. I know you have many connections within the MSM, and it would be great to leverage those to actually do a direct, honest, no holds barred interview with one of the big guns- Tambo, Lowe, Mcgregor, etc. The catch would be that longtime readers of the blog could submit thoughtful, but pointed, questions to you before hand and you could relay them on, as well as come up with your own. The most frustrating thing about following the oilers is the sense that there is no accountability in this franchise. Interviewing through the blogging community, if we could get access, would be one way to at least make them answer for their poor management over the last 5 years.
2) Oiler and hockey history. Especially over what will be a long summer, it would be great for you to regale us with some tales of the glory years. As a young oilers fan, I grew up with the Weight/Marchant teams of the 90s, and all those great years of the cup runs seem like pure legend. It would be great if you could tell us about those years, what they meant for the city of edmonton, how they changed hockey, etc.
Thanks
I love a good baseball story to start my day.
ReplyDeleteThe air smells like rain in Montreal, the robins are back and if it weren't for the espresso place on the corner I'd probably tear the Habs flags off of every car I see.
Oh, and the girls are wearing shorter skirts and smaller jackets.
Spring, baby. Spring.
Keep doing what you do, LT. It makes my day, everyday.
Mark: I have attempted to secure interviews with "those in charge" but it doesn't seem to be getting me anywhere. :-)
ReplyDeleteI suspect the other shows on Team 1260 get the Oilers attention, but we will keep trying.
I would like to see your past guesses on the Oiler rookies vs. actual to see how accurate your guesses are. I suspect you were a bit low on Hall and Eberle.
ReplyDeleteI'd like to see you provide some drinks, you are the host after all.
ReplyDeleteYour wit keeps me coming back but a cold beer would go a long way.
;)
What do people think about this all-time all-season Oiler team?
ReplyDelete'89 Tikkanen - '84 Gretzky - '85 Kurri

'10 Penner on the 4LW spot actually compares pretty favourably to '92 Damphousse and '85 Krushelnyski. Any one have strong opinions on if I've picked their best seasons?
I read this blog daily and have since the 05/06 season, it remains the best that the web has to offer. Young upstart “Oilers Nation” is coming on but they simply are not at the level of this site. You have attracted a sage and shall I say interesting following but the heart of this blog remains the musings of an old Expos and Oliers fan whose seen it all or most of it anyways and simply refuses to become jaded. I hope that you will continue to just keep do what you have been doing for the “Love of the Game.”.
ReplyDeleteAmen to that, mrzarel.
ReplyDeleteot: Would you trade Edm 20th pick(?) and 31st pick to move up in the draft?
ReplyDeleteMichael:
ReplyDeleteI think you've gotta keep Guerin with Weight and Smyth, and all from the year they got broken up.
Drop Hemmer down to play with Penner.
Hopefully Hall '12 replaces Penner soon enough.
Michael: Not a bad looking team, but Jimmy Carson and Sheldon Souray have no place on it. I would take Randy Gregg or Craig Muni any day over Souray and just about anyone over Carson.
ReplyDeleteLT: I think that your blog is a perfect shelter for sadly abused Oiler fans. The suggestion about cold beer was very good though.
Its something I have been thinking about lately....
ReplyDeleteI have given it some thought but I think it might be beyond my grasp to do a good enough job to make it worthwhile.
Since the rebuild has been embraced by Oiler Management there have been comparisons to Pittsburg and Chicago by the optimists and Floriday, Columbus, Atlanta, NYI by the pessimists. I also tend to think there is a third group... LA which is somewhere in between.
Would it be possible to track each teams rebuild and then evaluate where they were in year 2(?) in comparison to the where the Oilers are.
I think we could then forcast what moves Oiler management will make and decide which moves will lead us closer to, say, Chicago and which ones will lead us to the barren landscape that Florida inhabits.
Like I said it might make for some interesting reading in the dog days of summer but it would be a lot of leg work. Just a thought.
Otherwise.... great as usual LT. Can't wait for Reasonable expectations
Yeah, I hadn't actually thought about who plays with who, but hemsky should obviously slide down with penner...
ReplyDeleteIn terms of Carson and souray, they may be all around douches, and be flash in the pan oilers, but I think those seasons stand for themselves. After Carson, we're looking at horcoff in 06. Yikes...!
Michael, that's a nice lineup =).
ReplyDeleteI'd swap Guerin with Hemsky though (one playmaker is enough) and sub in Horcoff for Carson.
That gives you two more balanced lines in the bottom order that have a history of playing well together.
Smyth-Weight-Guerin
Penner-Horcoff-Hemsky
What would I like on the blog? I'd love to see some discussion about the LAK 1st and EDM 2nd. We all know about Larsson and Nugent-Hopkins, but I still don't know a terribly great amount about the other two high picks we'll be getting.
ReplyDeleteLT,
ReplyDeleteSeeing as you are asking, here is what I would like to see on the best site on the Internet:
1) I have been reading your stuff since your HF days going back to 2002. Through persistence and osmosis I have gained a better understanding of The Game thanks to many of the vehicles of inquiry you employ. However, I wonder if it would not be useful to see a comprehensive, unifying post explaining some of your thinking behind concepts such as Reasonable Expectations, Saw Him Good, Clusters, The NHL Is Not A Development League, and other themes you have explored for our benefit. This might provide those struggling with the basis of these concepts a better overall understanding (myself included, at times).
2) Stan Weir.
3) Ornamental flesh, only so I can loudly decry its display when my wife walks by.
4) I will continue to beat this drum: put a PayPay link up on your page like Tom Benjamin and I will keep you in beer for the season. And not Labatt's or similar swill. We are talking quality craft brews. You have more than earned it.
5) Finally, not a request, but a reiteration: this site is the best reason to be an Oilers fan. Some days it's the only reason to be an Oilers fan.
astsityr = an assist made while on seat of pants
I'd like to see "If I were GM for a day"-but that pretty much describes every day around here.
ReplyDeleteMaybe a little closer to the draft once we know where the picks are going to be.
Lt
ReplyDeleteIf Hall and Eberle have the career of Sweet Lou and A Trammell we will have a great 10-12 years in front of us. Sublime. Loved by Bill James which is the highest compliment indeed and just really really good.
Sat beside Kirk Gibson at a Suns game just after New Years in Phx and he is really stove up,neck, etc. He is still a big guy with HUGE hands.
Recognize small sample size ....but he was CLUTCH!!LOL
I echo Whitey. Oilers tell us that they have a PLAN and then trot out names of a series of bad teams that got noticeably better....draft, trades, gifts (sorry, thinking of Pau Gasol and Lakers) Love to see comparisons to those rebuilds. I would also be most interested in comparisons to teams that were horrible (Oilers definitely fit that profile) and the PLAN did not work....compare their moves with those of this management group
Cuz if their is a group that could f**k up Sweet Lou and A Trammell (er: Hall and Eberle)..... it is Oiler management
What I would like to see is an interview with the National Post's Sean McIndoe regarding the Oilers. He is funny, and honest. Today, in a column on the five worse NHL teams, he stated this about the Edmonton Oilers.
ReplyDeleteIs McIndoe the guy behind Down Goes Brown? Because if not, you're misattributing.
(That's a sincere question - I have no idea who's behind Down Goes Brown, despite my being in love with him/her/them.)
Michael: If you are making a team based on individual seasons then I suppose Carson belongs there. If you are trying to win a game, though, then you want Horcoff or even Ken Linseman.
ReplyDeleteNow that I've bothered with some research, it appears that Mr. McIndoe is in fact the Down Goes Brown guy; hopefully this provides some context to DonDon's request, and doesn't just make me look like a moron.
ReplyDeleteBryan that's what I was thinking too.
ReplyDeleteAlthough I wouldn't be upset to see MacTavish in there as well. Don't believe I forgot about him.
I'd like to see you provide some drinks, you are the host after all.
ReplyDeleteYour wit keeps me coming back but a cold beer would go a long way.
I'll second the motion.
Other than that, I look forward the draft target profiles.
Also, what about guest spots for some of the old Covered in Oil guys? ;)
Biggest game of the season.
ReplyDeleteCongrats to the boys. Two years running in last place is a rare feat.
PHI puts Michael Leighton on re-entry waivers today. He would be a good pick up with a cap hit of 50%. Would only cost $800k for next season.
ReplyDeletePlay him with Dubnyk for the season and send Nick down to the farm. We would still have his cap hit, but with 2 cheap tenders in the show it wouldn't really matter much.
I have a content idea. At some point have a post for each draft pick and we'll discuss who we should realistically take at that spot.
ReplyDeleteThose of us that only really pay attention to one league can suggest candidates for the pick and maybe the blog can come to loose consensus as to who the Oilers should take at each pick.
Wouldn't be a bad idea either as something you can revisit at times during next season when the team stinks and we can see how we did against Stu and company.
Congrats to the boys. Two years running in last place is a rare feat.
ReplyDeleteMike Milbury thinks the Oilers have a ways to go yet.
Can't wait to watch the MacIntyre - Jacques - Strudwick line tonight.
ReplyDeleteHere's a repost of DGB's bit on the Oilers. (hope that's ok LT)
ReplyDeleteBrilliant as usual.
Edmonton Oilers
Where it all went wrong: The team's talented rookie forwards were clearly overconfident, partly due to youth and inexperience but mostly due to shooting on Nikolai Khabibulin in practice every day.
Reason for optimism: Have plenty of cap room to sign free agents, which is great since that always works out really well for them.
Future outlook: Their embarrassing streak of being the sixth best team in all of Canada will almost certainly come to an end next year, once the Coyotes move to Winnipeg.
It doesn't suprise me that you are having trouble accessing the Oiler brass LT.
Since you don't carry a press pass, Alan Watt can't threaten to take it away if you ask some "uncomfortable questions".
Everyone who interviews the brass is either on the payroll or has a paycheck that depends on a press pass.
Watt can't act like the Oilers' version of Atropos with you, threatening to cut your life thread if you step out of line, or even make the interview subject uncomfortable.
My favorite part of this Oilers fan site is the frequent talk of the Expos. Bittersweet discussions they are.
ReplyDeleteOlivier Roy on Gregor's show right away.
ReplyDeleteFour more games.
ReplyDeleteOnly four more.
That's the best thing I've seen anyone write about the Oilers in months.
My favorite part of this Oilers fan site is the frequent talk of the Expos.
ReplyDeleteMe, too. Love the baseball stuff.
I don't know who's going to draft Tyler Biggs but it should be a funny one.
ReplyDeleteAs for the prospects i'm down for doing that.
Exept I suggest to simply go by CHL forwards like Colin Jacobs who struggle with scoring as legitimate options.
As i've showed in earlier posts, CHL forward with a difference between GP and PTS of 5 or more in the 1st round are simply bound to bust.
Ryan O'Marra's a quality player playing his rookie season?
ReplyDeleteCould've fooled me.
Just one simple request: an interview and pictures with Scarlett Johansen.
ReplyDeleteOr some pictures of a young Liz Taylor would be fine too.
anduqly: everything my request isn't.
hopefully this provides some context to DonDon's request, and doesn't just make me look like a moron.
ReplyDeleteDon't worry, it does both.
How about maybe changing management at the top for the Oilers. They finish last again for another season, injuries pile up (some are obviously not avoidable), but still, why doesn't anyone want to play here? The training staff was fired and most of everyone else last year and yet not much has changed for desire for others to play. Without quality vets to help the kids develop, we are going to be going nowhere. Perhaps losing Lowe and Tambellini and changing things up might intrigue other established players to want to play here. Someone needs to mentor these kids, we don't have enough players who 'know' how to play hockey to help these young guys. They will just start to get down about losing all the time and this rut will just continue.
ReplyDeleteLT,
ReplyDeleteAs always a pleasure.....
OK, so far some really great ideas in tracking the up coming draft picks, love the "history" angles ( hockey or baseball )I think a "How did the player do after the Oil" angle could be good, pick any past oiler, and see how their career path unfolded, after they moved on (Arnott to Weight, from Gretz to Ranford)
Once again, thank you for your efforts, so many of us read, but never thank you regularly enough.
hunter 1909:"Two years running in last place is a rare feat"
ReplyDeleteReally? I am pretty sure someone on here had the stats of ending in one of 29 or 30th the year after finishing dead last...and it was around 66%
Not the same as dead last twice, but close, and not rare at all (being 29th or 30th).
Would surprise me if it was rare then given that.
rock concerts @ the Gardens
ReplyDeleteWell, well, well gather roun' the fire and let me tell ya about Good Friday back in....
Musta been 1973.
A buncha Brits hit the ol’ Gardens and rocked her hard.
The late Rory Gallagher opened up with a terrific set of guitar driven irish blues.
The original Fleetwood Mac, still a blues band, followed with a set less dazzling than Gallagher’s.
Then came the stars of the show: Buh, buh buhhh.
Bah, buh bah-buhhh.
Bah, buh buhh, bumbaahhh.
Yup, that’s right, Deep Purple on the Machinehead tour.
The arena was packed. You couldn't swing a dead cat without hitting a longhair.
Never mind smoke on the water, you should’ve seen the air.
They allowed smoking in the seats in those far off times.
And, the Gardens lacked air conditioning.
The spots had to cut a swath through the smoke to get from the catwalk to the stage.
It was an aural and visual feast, I tell ya.
hiblo - I'd certainly say hello to one
I am not sure what it would take for Katz to sanitize the management department. Another last place finish next year might be enough to get Tambo flushed, but I doubt that would be enough for Lowe. If anyone had any doubts that there are problems there, then I think that some of the moments in Oil Change should have sorted that out. Despite all the gloom and doom, though, I have to say that I love watching the young kids play. Hartikainen is a treat and hopefully one day will be the go to response when people are talking about how Detroit made out like bandits with their low round picks.
ReplyDeleteYup, that’s right, Deep Purple on the Machinehead tour
ReplyDelete...slow talking Walter, and fire engine guy.... Buh, buh buhhh.
Bah, buh bah-buhhh.

It actually is hard for dedicated professionals to achieve this level of ineptitude. It requires active support from management.
A loss tonight clinches last overall, but I'm willing to throw caution to the wind for tonights game. Goilers.
ReplyDeleteFML.
ReplyDeleteCenter Ice has the Canucks feed.
Zee goggles, zey do noseeng.
Oilers Tweet...
ReplyDeleteTom Gilbert is a late scratch tonight, meaning his consecutive games streak will end at 332.
Out with a sore back, per Tencer.
That sucks.
I guess this means no StrudJacquIntyre line tonight.
ReplyDeleteI guess this means no StrudJacquIntyre line tonight.
ReplyDeleteIn all seriousness, can anyone think of a worse line to hit the ice in the NHL since the lockout?
Jones should buy a deck of Lotto Max tickets.
ReplyDeleteSince you don't carry a press pass, Alan Watt can't threaten to take it away if you ask some "uncomfortable questions".
ReplyDeleteOh come on WG, that would never happen anyway. The Oilers talk to Quebec City and LT posts about large bodies of water.
Dam Eberle is smart. 5 seconds left, everyone is shouting shoot, and he makes one more move to gain a better angle to shoot and fires one off of jones' shin pad.
ReplyDeleteThat's another $100k on Jones' next contract-god help us all if he gets to 20.
ReplyDeleteI think we should start a pool regarding the cap hit of Jones' next contract; would fit into the dark humour around here.
ReplyDeleteI'll start with $4.2 million.
For frick's sake Gene, did you have to mention the 42 point curse regarding Eberle's latest point?
ReplyDeleteTime to say 42 Hail Mary's.
ReplyDeleteAlso, that's point number 42 for Eberle, no? He'd better watch himself.
ReplyDeleteHa. Great minds think alike, and sometimes so does Principe's.
ReplyDeleteAnd another 42 Hail Mary's.
ReplyDeleteSS,
ReplyDeleteIf you are right, I hope it's spread over 7 years.
This comment has been removed by the author.
ReplyDeleteIf you are right, I hope it's spread over 7 years.
ReplyDeleteThe pool was intended to be for annual cap hit.
My guess was a joke. I hope.
well, that wasn't too bad in the least.
ReplyDeleteI had the chances at 7-3 and I haven't been watching all the games lately but 91 looks more and more like he's confident in his scoring ability.
I dare say that when the time comes to trade him the Ducks will be hard-pressed not to give us at least their 3rd best D prospect!!!
I dare say that when the time comes the Ducks will be hard-pressed not to give us at least their 3rd best D prospect!!!
ReplyDeleteOkay, but making the finals had better be sufficient to upgrade the third into a second - no more of this "if they win the Cup..." nonsense.
Two thoughts:
ReplyDelete- I'm pretty sure that 42 points curse was broken when 56 was called up: he had 43 points in the A upon his recall and he's been alright ever since.
- how can the Hawks be +32 in GD and yet still fighting for a playoff spot with four games to go?I don't want to see a team like Ana get in with a GD like they currently possess.
Is MacIntyre dressed? The NHL.com gamesheet has us with only eighteen skaters; I assume that one of the missing ones is because of Gilbert, but what's with the other one? Do the players not show up until they actually step onto the ice?
ReplyDeleteOh come on WG, that would never happen anyway. The Oilers talk to Quebec City and LT posts about large bodies of water.
ReplyDeleteI was talking more about LT asking questions about their inept approach to hockey management.
I'd like to hear the question "If this is year one of the rebuild, how do you classify the previous 4 years out of the playoffs?"
I don't need LT to take a position on the rink.
When the went to Quebec they also met with Pierre Karl Peladeau, chairman of Quebecor and the guy who will be the money man behind bringing a team there.
I don't see monsters under the bed there.
What I can't stand is that smarmy prick LaForge using it to throw yet another inferred "new rink or we move" jab at the city.
He's an asshole.
Sorry, that should read "sixteen skaters".
ReplyDeleteSS: I will Never forget Lowe cackling with glee in the Edm dailies when the Ducks made the finals in '07 thus activating the conditional pick.
ReplyDeleteon another note, this is the absolute best time of the year to follow sports.
ReplyDeleteNCAA final last night and the Masters - even though I don't like watching golf - this coming weekend and of course playoff races in NHL and NBA and MLB opening as well.
I was talking more about LT asking questions about their inept approach to hockey management.
ReplyDeleteI don't think any member of the Oilers org would or should have any worries over appearing on LT's radio show or blog.
in looking at that sharp angle goal from 14 on Sat night you wonder how many of those he'll score before opposing fans and bcasters stop calling them flukes.
ReplyDeleteThis "In The System" thing on Sportsnet must have been conceived by Kevin Prendergast. It's shameless.
ReplyDeleteI gotta say with Ryan Jones, I haven't disliked an Oiler this much since Joffrey Lupul.
someone punch tambellini, either one.
ReplyDeleteRiversQ: Why the hate? He's happy like hell everytime he scores.

Classic JFJ shift there.
ReplyDelete1. Lines up Bieksa but the dman plays the puck without issue.
2. Gets a chance off the wing but rings it around the glass.
It's astounding that we have seen so much of this guy at the NHL level.
RQ,
ReplyDeleteI think he could throw a change up after a couple of soft curves.
I mean, pashaw! Where did Lowetide get his journalism degree from anyways... out of a Cracker Jack box?
ReplyDeleteIt's kind of ironic that someone that hasn't made a single positive remark in nearly a decade is calling out LT for not making any negative ones.
ReplyDeleteI don't think that "ironic" means what...oh, to hell with it.
ReplyDeleteThis comment has been removed by a blog administrator.
ReplyDeletea guy who can't change gears is criticizing someone for not changing gears... Thats technically not ironic? Just curious. Irony is a tricky thing sometimes.
ReplyDeleteWell, I'm not sure he's criticizing him for not changing gears so much as for being insufficiently critical. A really critical person criticizing somebody for not being critical enough isn't very ironic at all.
ReplyDeleteHowever, if the way that you framed it is accurate, I take back my snark.
What the hell is a microcarbonated lager?
ReplyDeleteWhenever I give up drinking, for even like a week, it's like the man immediately detects the dip in sales and releases some new bevie to get me back into the fold.
Yeah I don't think my comment meant what you think it meant.
ReplyDeletegetting the John Garrett feed.
ReplyDeletei'd appreciate a win tonight.
If there was an award for drive by snide remarks I think we would have a runaway winner.
ReplyDeleteDrive-by? I don't drive by these threads, I squat in them until everybody else goes away.
ReplyDeleteThe only thing better than an Oiler win tonight would be a Canuck loss.
ReplyDeleteI'm hoping for the latter.
Our cat snores louder than I do. My fiancé is truly blessed.

ReplyDeleteIf anybody thinks that LT's amazing grace hasn't been noticed or mentioned before, they just haven't been paying attention.
ReplyDeleteKinda the antithesis of that Rueben character over at ON.
Speaking of politics, fpb, I saw the ultimate Conservative commercial the other day:

ReplyDeleteIt's kind of ironic that someone that hasn't made a single positive remark in nearly a decade is calling out LT for not making any negative ones.
First of all, I've been very bullish on Lowe's ability to hold court at a pancake breakfast. Secondly, it's only been five years, so I wouldn't count that as a "nearly a decade" but whatever floats your boat.
It would be ironic if these Oilers could knock off the President's Trophy winners in back-to-backs.
ReplyDeleteSS: I wasn't referring to you good sir.
ReplyDeleteWell, now you've just gotten my competitive dander up.
(Notwithstanding what I may have said yesterday, to hell with the "rule" about not ending sentences with prepositions.)
Yes. It may not mean much but it's a lot nicer than watching a couple more beat downs.
ReplyDeleteI don't think "preposition" means what you think it means.
ReplyDeletehoil,
ReplyDeleteIts amazing how many times Iggy says "let me be clear", then muddies it up with bullshit and dances around the question.
Yeah, he inspires confidence.
I don't think "quotation marks" mean what you think it does.
ReplyDeletegregor tweet.
ReplyDeleteVande Velde is 60% in the dot. He is 3 of 5 and all his faceoffs have come against Kesler and Sedin.
Small sample size, but you have to like the results.
Owned.
ReplyDeleteI'll modify: it got my competitive danger up myself.
Has anyone noticed how much the liberals are injecting the word green into everything possible?
ReplyDeleteI sense a campaign strategy.
Woodguy,
ReplyDeleteIf I was running the Conservative campaign I would dump the "Iggy is American" attack ads and just loop his interview answers instead.
(As I said yesterday: "I try not to play up the grammar Nazi thing, since once you start doing that people are just waiting for you to slip up, which I do often.")
ReplyDeleteI may not be much of a grammarian, but I'm a hell of a prophet.
Also, I don't think "yesterday" means what I think it means. Jesus. As soon as I get ahead, I'm going to quit while I'm there.
ReplyDeleteI think 54's already passed 42 just because of the fact that he can win a draw.
ReplyDeleteHe's a very stiff skater, though.

Let it never be said that we do not need the prophets.
ReplyDeleteAnd, you know, the babes.
Just once, I'd like to be hoisted by somebody else's petard.
ReplyDeleteMel: That comic offers good advice. If you had a greater knowledge of my life to date, you'd know exactly how I feel about following good advice.
ReplyDeleteHow did Kesler miss that one? Couldn't happen to a nicer guy.
ReplyDeleteWe continue with the Hockey's Future ranking of the Top 50 NHL prospects. This time around, we'll provide a breakdown of positions 31-40.
ReplyDeleteAt #40 is Edmonton Oilers defensive prospect, Martin Marincin. The lanky Slovakian has turned in a solid rookie season for the WHL's Prince George Cougars. Marincin also caused some controversy at the 2011 WJC when he was suspended for four games after delivering a head shot to Team USA's Jason Zucker. Marincin has enough size, mobility, and competitiveness to make him a very intriguing future addition to the Oilers' blueline corps.

Lowetide: You are so good to all the OIL fans out there, thanks for that. I guess a good topic would be an analysis of the differences in development between last place teams that amass a bunch of top-3 draft picks over a few years that do go grow to winning Stanley Cups (the "haves": Penguins, Nordiques-Avs, Chicago, Devils, Ducks to name a few), vs ones that bottom out, amass top-3 draft picks but don't climb to the top ("have nots": NYI, Senators, Coyotes, Thrashers, Predators to name a few). What do the haves do that the have-nots don't? The OIL: are their clues to us which way we are headed? I think that insight would be very interesting, but maybe too hard to do? Cheers Lowetide.
ReplyDeleteRaymond looks exactly like the son from Big Love.....except that kid scores more.
ReplyDeleteEspecially GREEN jobs?
ReplyDeleteI saw some clips of Marincin in their playoff and thought he was quite impressive. He certainly has good mobility for a big man.
ReplyDeleteNow that they have the refs figured, the 'Nucks are dropping when sneezed upon.
ReplyDeleteRQ,
ReplyDeleteL.T has called out Oiler management often on this blog.
Really don't see how you say otherwise.
He doesn't jump up and down and scream it like others (including myself), but that just shows he maturity and class.
My future brother in law owns a business in GTA. He advertises in the yellow pages, his bill for said advertising is $22K... Per month.

The real irony is that I posted my comment fully expecting myself to be butchering the definition of irony compeling one of the grammar Nazis around these parts to brutally sodomize my post.
ReplyDeleteWhat a disappointment.
Jones must be closing in on his most minutes in a game this year. I actually haven't minded his game, but I did laugh at his attempted shot on the shorthanded chance; it was probably as far away as his 18 goals were strung together.
ReplyDeleteTorres remains douchey to the core...
Slipper: by at least some definitions (though not mine), your post was ironic. A critical guy criticizing somebody for being insufficently critical isn't ironic under anybody's definition, I don't think (but a one-note guy criticizing a guy for being one-note certainly is, so Danny's alright by me).
ReplyDeleteI'm feeling very optimistic about Dubnyk these days. Am I wrong?
If Torres doesn't get at least 3-5 for that I would be surprised.
ReplyDeleteText book head shot.
ReplyDeleteIf 14 sees the ice again tonight fire the trainers and doctors.
ReplyDelete14 has 42 points right?
We loved when Raffi did that to Mihalek in 06.
It was Mihalek right?
this is when you need a trevor gillies.
ReplyDeletecanucks planning ahead for next year. head shot on eberle.
ReplyDeleteBig elbow from Torres but that's always been his thing.
ReplyDeleteEberle got up quickly-hope he's OK.
First round of the playoffs at home for Torres?
ReplyDeleteHe can be *chilan* with his buds in LA that first week.
33 should tell renney to fuck off and just jump over the bench on his own accord.
ReplyDeleteCogliano crosschecked in the face...that kid has had a lot of lumps in the kisser this year.
ReplyDeleteFor some players, that might be a tough call but I think we know that Torres had intent there.
ReplyDeleteTo the extent that Torres is capable of forming intent, anyway.
ReplyDeleteI wouldn't mind cheering for Vancouver in the playoffs but not with a guy like Burrows on there.
ReplyDeleteC'mon. SMac on the power play to stand in front of the next, and accidentally fall down on Luongo.
ReplyDeleteThe hit on Michalek was worse than that one. This hit wasn't an elbow either. Eberle was defenseless though.
ReplyDeleteOK, more of a punch than a crosscheck on Cogliano.
ReplyDeleteThe 'Nucks not looking like a helluva lot tonight. No pizzazz and no poise.
Renney's treatment of MacIntyre is supremely confusing. Either you believe in the goon philosophy or you don't, and MacIntyre supposedly owes his spot on the team to the fact that Renney does. But nothing about Renney's use of MacIntyre suggests that that's true.
ReplyDeleteSheesh....silver platter not enough for Omark.
ReplyDeleteI can't believe they put 14 out on the next shift.
ReplyDeleteGreat protection of your young starts.
Stupid fucking Oilers.
nice jerseys!
ReplyDeleteThere wasn't a head shot crackdown in 2006 like there is now. They could put that hit in the book for showing what to call a head shot.
ReplyDeleteMaking them pay the best way.
ReplyDeleteI love this stuff, planting maybe a little seed of doubt in this Vancouver juggernaut by this AHL team.
ReplyDeleteShould read "young stars"
ReplyDeleteAny bets on the shutout??
ReplyDeleteWG: Yeah, I couldn't believe he was back out there either.
ReplyDeleteI hope Renney goes back with DD tomorrow night because the kid's had problems when we've given him a chance to run with the ball but that's something he's got to get over
ReplyDeleteNow, to put the Flames out of their misery, lock up 30th and get to the draft.
ReplyDeleteaaaah, how Swede it is...see you on the course in a few weeks, Dys fans...
ReplyDeleteRivers - looks like an elbow, no?
ReplyDeleteReminiscent of the hit on Williams, less damage though.
I think Paajarvi is going to score a lot of goals given proper linemates and icetime. If he had gotten the push Hall and Eberle did I think he'd have 20
I can't imagine why Dubnyk wouldn't finish out the string now.
ReplyDeletehttp://www.mc79hockey.com/?p=3622#comment-318138
ReplyDeletePat: I don't think so. His arm was tight by his side there. I think you have to stick your elbow out to call it an elbow. Vicious hit though - supposedly what they want to eliminate.
ReplyDeleteI went back with the PVR and it sure looked like an elbow to me.
ReplyDeleteEnjoyed the last 2 games-almost makes up for the dreck we've been forced to watch this year.
When it comes to grammar I usually stick to the me and he vs he and I stuff, and the your and you're. Stuff that I get to call people out on often, but doesn't require actually knowing very much about grammar.
ReplyDeleteOh, and the Oilers won again, in case anybody was unaware.
There's been a lot of talk about burying Khabi (for roster reasons, not cap, obviously) and finding somebody to platoon with Dubnyk. I'm prepared to say that the starting job is Dubnyk's to lose, and that Khabibulin can stay in the NHL as a 20 game backup.
ReplyDeleteWorst case scenario is that Dubnyk collapses and Khabibulin has to step in, but I don't see much evidence we'll be competing for a playoff spot next year anyway.
(We still need to sign somebody for Oklahoma City, though, even if just to an AHL contract - a Roy-Pitton tandem might undo a lot of the work the club's done in trying to build a winner down there. Assuming Pitton is even qualified.)
What happened to the mandatory dressing room examination after a head shot?
ReplyDeletePaajarvi - Something is clicking with him, the increased ice time has served this one well.
ReplyDeleteDennis - I don't think that DD has a "problem" being able to sustain - that's characteristic of all young goalies. He's simply a youngster who is improving and consistency is one of the biggest issues that all goal tenders need to work on at this stage of their career. You start Bulin in Calgary and give Dubnyk the final 2 games so that he can be rested and stay focused on maintaining technique. Next year he's a 1B starter in half the games or a bit more - and he's probably able to carry the load the way you would like to see the year after. One step at a time....
ReplyDeleteAsiaoil's just contradicting me on a question of goaltender development, so I'll just go ahead concede that I was wrong.
ReplyDeleteAsia: I'll buy into your thinking for resting Dubnyk tomorrow. Certainly don't want to mess up his confidence at this stage of the year.
ReplyDeleteNah keeping Bulin around is fine SS - I'd just give him a few more games - 35 or even 40 if he doesn't completely suck - that would allow Dubnyk to be pretty well rested and continue to develop his game. You want the kid's technique set in concrete before you throw him to the wolves in a 60 game plus season.
ReplyDeleteHmmm interesting.
ReplyDeleteJones' SH% is only 1% above his career total.
Which means his production could be sustainable.
Considering his low on ice SH% (8) it would actually suggest his numbers would go up next year, as he'd have more assists.
Bryan - finally appearing to develop a goalie "in house" is a great story for this franchise given it's history in this area. Everyone on this site knows how critical I was of the so called "coaching" that Peeters did in his time with the Oilers - so I don't think it's much of a coincidence that Dubnyk appears to have turned a corner this season with Chabot around. It's a good story and I expect LT is just as happy about it as I am since we both watched this kid a ton since he was drafted.
ReplyDeleteOn the one hand, FPB, you're right about Jones' career percentage. On the other hand, his career to date consists of 243 shots, nearly half of which have come this season. Twenty-four players in the NHL have more shots than that this year alone.
ReplyDeleteWe're still in the realm of small sample sizes with him, and I don't buy that he's a 14% shooter. He sits 22nd in the league this season in shooting percentage among guys who have at least a hundred shots (and I don't think that's including tonight's game).
I don't think it's sustainable, though I see your point about assists.
Actually, the 22nd in the league thing does count tonight's game; the 243 career shots does not. After tonight, he's also more than 1.5% above his career total.
ReplyDeleteSS: I agree that it might not be sustainable, but I still think that Jones can be a useful player for a reasonable about of money on a short term.
ReplyDeleteShould say "amount of money".
ReplyDeleteNot much of a record FPB - Jones only took about 250 shots in his career and only 125 in the 2 years before this one - the kid's production could go either way for all anyone knows. I'd sign him for $3 million or less over 2 years - would not go anywhere near $4 million or more over the same period. A number between those 2 is tricky though.
ReplyDelete@AsiaOil,
ReplyDeleteDD just played his 34th game and you think next year he only deserves to play 8 more games than this year ?
I would disagree. If the Oilers believe in DD, they should be looking at the 50-60 games for sure next year.
If Tambo wants to flaunt his free agent signing, then they bury DD behind Khabi and we get to see DD play about 30-40 again.
Reg - the Oilers are not winning anything next year so the question should be "what is best for Dubnyk's development"? I personally don't think that running him into the ground next season serves any purpose - while giving him a good mix of starts, rest and practice time benefits his development longterm. Grinding him down risks the real progress that's been made this year - and young goalies are a funny bunch - sometimes they buckle under a heavy load of starts and never come back. If we develop him properly then the year after he should be ready to go 60 if that's what we need.
ReplyDeleteI don't know - Jones' RelCorsi is second worst among Oilers' forwards (behind MacIntyre), and his zoneshift isn't much good either (sixth worst), despite playing below average competition (admittedly also with below average teammates).
ReplyDeleteIf he sticks around, I have him pencilled in as my fourth line left-winger, and I don't see much reason to pay more than $1 million for that spot (unless it's for a special teams specialist, which I don't think Jones is, though he has been top four in SH TOI/60 among Oilers' forwards this year).
I'm happy to let him walk, though I'd have been happier to trade him at the deadline.
@Asiaoil,
ReplyDeleteI just think he's earned more than 8 more starts. In fact, by the time this season is done, it might really be 6 more games.
The Oilers need to see how much he can carry. Agreed 60-70 is too much, but 50-60 should be the target.
His PK RelCorsi is second worst of those four, for whatever that's worth, behind only Colin Fraser.
ReplyDeleteJones had a 12% SH in 125 games prior to this year. He's now shooting 14.75%.
ReplyDeleteI don't think that's reflective of his true ability.
I know he was getting crushed by SC for most of the year, but I think he has picked that up a little big lately. He certainly had a decent SC breakdown tonight.
SS and Asia: Exactly, we shouldn't pay a lot for him. 1M$ is reasonable.
ReplyDeleteI ain't exactly arguing he's a world beater, but his points total might not be that crazy, if he can't sustain the high SH%, he should have more assists.
That said for ZN and REL I don't think a lot of 4th liners exactly dominate that.
To me he's just a fun guy to see play, cause he's enjoying himself and he's trying to do the right things. And i'd rather have that than a guy like Moreau or JFJ.
I don't think he's a world beater, but I don't think it's necessary to let him sail away, if he asks for reasonable money.
LT: I know I'm really late to this conversation, but I hope this doesn't get missed.
ReplyDeleteI'd like to see what a statistical case would be for Adam Larsson and why his 9 points or so this season in the SEL makes him the "best player available" at #1 over someone like the Nuge, SC, and even Hamilton whose point totals are well north of Larsson's.
I'm not an advanced stat guy, but it seems that the case for drafting Larsson is usually: he's big, NHL ready because he already plays with men, or because the Nuge scorers too many points on the PP, or because SC has foot speed issues etc. etc.
Somehow this doesn't do it for me. I'm not against drafting Larsson at #1, it's just that I've yet to hear anything that sways me.
Thanks.
That should have been little bit. I wouldn't pay Jones over $1M. Too many numbers pointing the wrong way.
ReplyDeletePamela? Guy? SO MUCH CONFUSION!
ReplyDeleteFPB: I see very little chance that Jones will be available for $1 million.
ReplyDeleteOf course, last year I said that we should let Ryan Potulny walk because his asking price would probably be too high, so take my predictions with a grain of salt (as if you didn't know that).
Nah keeping Bulin around is fine
ReplyDeleteEspecially when management has decreed this is rebuild decade.
despoonc - I see despoonc, but does anyone see deforkc?
I see ten thousand despooncs, when all I need is a deknifec.
ReplyDeleteHow's that for irony?
Oh and sorry that was 125 shots by Jones prior to this season, not games.
ReplyDeleteWith the amount of cap space available for the next 2 years, a 2-yr deal for $1.5M/Yr for Jones wouldn't be a terrible overpay.
ReplyDeleteSS: I think the guys who usually get ''More'' are older guys who stuck around for a while.
ReplyDeleteI'd be damn surprised to see Jones get north of 1,3.
Unless some weirdo GM raises the stakes on him.
I guess what makes salary predictions with those guys so weird is the fact NHL GM's contain so much morons.
One year Malhotra begs for a job, the other he gets 2M$.
With the amount of cap space available for the next 2 years, a 2-yr deal for $1.5M/Yr for Jones wouldn't be a terrible overpay.
ReplyDeleteWell, you're basically right, but you can use that logic to justify overpaying any player. Jones isn't high on my list.
I would be shocked if Jones signs on for only $1M per. He's a huge fan favorite, career year, UFA, plays with some aggression. I think he will be in line for a $1.3M or $1.5M per year average over 2 years or 3 years.
ReplyDeleteIf they don't give him over $1M average, you will see him test the free agent market in my opinion.
Like bringing despoonc to deknifec fight (and discovering firearms were actually involved).
ReplyDeleteTwo things I want to see more of:
1. Obscure history questions (but this may be the wrong forum)
3. Cowbell
