Blue Jackets at Oilers, G65 '10-'11

Tonight marks the return of Ethan rifles. Unless he's hurt himself again, Oiler fans will be able to see "2 minutes for being foolish 90 feet from his net" Moreau. I shouldn't be mean about it, Ethan served this team well for many years before losing a step and being forced to use his stick to stop the train.

He's in the "finished up his career by going 28gp, 1-4-5 -7 with Columbus" phase of a long and solid NHL career. He played during a time when the Oilers were outmanned pretty much every night.

So much has changed.
--

The Jackets have some nice veterans (Nash, Umberger, Vermette, newly acquired Upshall) up front and a plethora of quality youth (Voracek, Brassard, young wunderkind Matt Calvert). Their blue features a nice array of talent, including Fedor Tyutin, Marc Methot, Kris Russell and Jan Hejda. It's not exactly the 77 Habs but they do get the job done. Goaltending has been the issue this season. I don't know that they're going to be a playoff team this year, but they're a good hockey club. I wonder if they considered dealing for Vokoun at the deadline.
--

The Oilers are in real danger of  passing Ottawa in the standings. It's important because the 30th place team gets a better chance of winning the lottery and this year picking first will be important again. Some say it doesn't matter because Ottawa won't choose D Adam Larsson, but Bryan Murray is a pretty sharp cookie when it comes to procurement. If the Sens believe Larsson is the BPA don't be surprised if he's taken. I remain convinced Couturier is the guy, but Landeskog is 13gp, 8-9-17 +9 since returning from injury. Folks, he might be the BPA.
--

Winnipeg is in the news again. Bob McKenzie suggests the NHL has some issues in the south and that the Jets could be back as soon as next season. Maybe they'll trade for Khabibulin.
--

With the Oilers once again moving back the competition clock, we have to assume anyone over 20 is in play. What does that mean? If the recently acquired Kings pick ends up between 17 and 20 (hat tip to "Steve Smith" for supplying the math) the Oilers may attempt to trade up for a Dougie Hamilton. What would that cost? Maybe the pick and Sam Gagner, possibly a bigger deal involving Hemsky.

Everyone but Hall, Eberle and possibly Pääjärvi are likely in play.

Bet 365 currently has CBJ as a -130 favorite tonight.

With no 27 and probably no 83 that should be closer to -170

I pounded that line as well as CBJ -.5 +110

I applied for a home line of credit and will be putting that on the line as well.

  2. Prediction: the Jets will finish ahead of us next year even if they don't have a team.

  3. There was a time when Ethan was what we wanted every Oiler to be. Unfortunately he acquired the C as his game entered an elevator shaft.

    I'm hoping for 2 things
    1) Oilers draft BPA
    2) That player is Adam Larsson

And yes Oilers need to start losing a bit here. I have tickets and I did against St Louis on Friday so I'm not expecting much.

  4. Thanks for the standings WG. If any of you have watched Ottawa recently you'd feel a bit better about the position the Oilers are in (about the same level of NHL level talent, but they're lacking the same degree of hope-inspiring youth).

At this point, it would seem to make the most sense to just stick DD in net for a while and see how he handles a 4-5 game set. Even if he somehow manages to replicate Gerber's surprising success and put together a little run, this goes towards his future development rather than simply meaningless wins in a lottery season.

  6. woodguy: yep, Bulin back should secure the top pick. Renney called him a #1 goalie in this league in the journal again. Man that hurts.

LT: would they be so dumb as to make an RFA sheet to Weber. Don't get me wrong, he would be stellar, but are you kidding me. Why deal Penner then trade for a dman who will cost more then $6 mill and cost us 4 1st rd picks. That would signal the end of the rebuild, so the penner deal makes no sense.

I actually hope we go team sweden in the off season and draft.
    - draft Larsson
    - bring over Lander
    - try to sign Jonathan Ericsson from Detroit to play in our top 4. 27 yr old solid two way dman with size. If Detroit resigns Lidstrom, they may not be able to afford Ericsson. He hasn't played the tough minutes with them, but he has potential and would be a top 4 guy for us right away.

  7. I think if Ottawa drafted 1st overall and passed on Larsson that would be a huge tell. Larsson's coach used to scout for Ottawa and if they don't think he has much upside, well, we might be smart to heed that warning sign.

I think it comes down to Larsson or Couturier, personally. Landeskog is putting up great numbers, but on the other hand he's on an absolute powerhouse and scouts are asking if he has that high level of offensive talent. It's a genuine shame we didn't get to see him at the WJC. Tournament of small sample sizes or not, it would have been nice to see him play in a different setting.

I might get a chance to go to the game tonight. The seats are close to the benches, so I'll try to see if there's any chatter between theformercaptainethanmoreau and any Oilers.

Man, we should have called Penner "thebigmandustinpenner" when we had the chance.

  8. I agree w/Cactus re: OTT. Having Anderson in nets stabilizes that team. Plus they play in the east.

That should be good enough to keep them ahead of us, especially if Hemsky is out for any length of time.

Only question left for this group is are the capable of playing ELPH? Last three games have been anything but.

  9. Hawks making a nice run, Toews has been lights out. That poor start is going to cost them the division though.

As usual that 4/5 matchup in the west is going to be a bastard. A good club is going out first round.

Interesting draft. Everyone says its weak but I would bet that in a few years we'll look back and say that it was typical. A few of these top kids are going to be great.

Someone last night on the TV said Landeskog might not have that offensive upside but he was a combination of Sundin and Shanahan. Um, come again?

I bet we pass Ottawa. I think they take Landeskog and then we take Larsson. If we finish first I would bet on Larsson being the pick but I don't know a damn thing.

Enjoyed the podcast LT. So back in the old days would you have described yourself as Johnny Fever or Venus Flytrap? I was thinking Fever but the more I think about it you have that Flytrap vibe going on.

BTW what did everyone think about the deal on Monday? :P

  10. Finally we're all on board with the tank.

It's all I've thought about this season, hoping of course that the eunuchs at Rexall would...ah what the heck.

I reckon OIlers finish in 29th, and fear they end up in 25th and out of the reckoning for one of the big four.

I also find myself cheering for the Leafs/Islanders/Devils/ for some strange reason this year, and as of Monday have added the Flames(henceforth called the Antikings) lol.

    ReplyDelete
  11. I think the recent comments about the timeline of this rebuild give us some indication of what options the Oilers are considering for the draft. Establishing a 4-5 year timeframe would allow the development of a D-man like Larsson, who could then contribute to the potential Cup run. However, if they were expecting to be in the thick of things in 2 years, having that big C would likely fill that gap faster.

    ReplyDelete
  12. DBO,

Either CBC or TheTEAM has Craig Simpson on during the deadline and he was asked if Khabby was a "go to" goalie.

Simmer: "Yeah, if you want to finish last"

    HA!

    Cactus,

I said after the Anderson/Elliott trade that the GM who was happiest with the deal was Tambellini

    OTT is +155 at ATL

OTT is 4-5-1 in last 10
ATL is 2-6-2 in last 10

Not a slam dunk but there is real value there.

    ReplyDelete
  13. @ DBO

you said it best. It will be really dumb of them to offer sheet Weber. If that was the plan, then there was ablsolutely no need to trade Penner! This is now a 4-6 year process.
Furthermore, ST doesnt look like a GM who would be agressive enough to offer sheet anyone.

  14. @ Black Dog

I agree with you. This draft may not have the top end latent like Hall/Seguin, but the rest of it is solid. I dont get this weak draft crap either. I think there is a decent chance that we get a good proepct with the LA pick as well. Some possibilited- Mcneill/Armia and from the looks of it Siemens may end up going around that time too.

coced: similar to coked...a level of high only achievable by a Oiler GM

  15. Sometimes I think I'm a pessimist when it comes to the Oilers.

Other times, I look at the standings and think "Well, if LA misses the playoffs EDM might get a 13th or 14th OV pick, and there's about a 1% chance that pick could become a 9th or 10th OV pick via the lottery."

Maybe I'm an optimist after all?

    ReplyDelete
  16. I think that given the comments made by Renny in the past, he has no problems lying to the camera. I am fine with that. Everyone knows that Khabi is not a #1 anymore, but why trumpet that in the media. The Oilers are trying to lose and they are now using Khabi to do so. Again, nobody is going to say that in public. That is fine.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Bookie, if anything, losing on the back of Khabby is an advantage. As a former top goalie it gives the impression that they're "trying hard" to the casual observer.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Bulin is underrated.

There is a comment in the Journal today about why they played Gerber. Renney said that DD had taken the 5-0 loss to STL hard and they wanted him to work on some things with Chaput and get him back on track.

People have been wondering why they have not played DD more. I have been saying for a while its because DD's confidence is fragile and they don't want him to get shelled night after night.

Accordingly, there is some value in Bulin. As a vet he is able to take the majority of the games in a tough season.

Agreed that on offer sheet for Weber would be insane. He is likely going to be up around $7 million a season. Whats that? 5 first rounders in compensation?

  19. I've been watching the Ottawa games and Anderson has been great since joining the team (great trade by the Sens, btw). Their goaltending has been a huge problem so if they can get some scoring--they're averaging 2 and a 1/4 goals per game so it ain't pretty--they might pick up some points. That said, if the Oilers keep batting .500 I think the Oil will pass them.

The good news, as Woodguy mentioned, is that this is a two-horse race. No way the Oilers catch the Isles or anyone ahead of them.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Bobby Mac said that he was pretty sure that O'mark botched that shoot out shot and got lucky.

I've watched that goal a bunch of times and it is the most beautiful goal I've seen in a while. It's too bad he overlooks it so easily.

WG: I like your gambling-tinged viewpoints.

Mike: that 1% line was funny.

And, yeah, if we're on another 17 year rebuild then it makes sense to take Larsson - or at least as anything these bunch of stupes do can be viewed as sensible.

I predict that Tambo packages 89 plus LAK's first rounder and gets a player that's later leaked as being described in-house as a 3rd liner.

Then the apologists come on here and defend it again:)

then we flash forward to june 30th and everyone thinks the Oilers will plug the holes on July 1st.

then it's late dec and we're in 30th place again.

  26. As of right now, his TOI/G suggests that Larsson is a bottom 4 d man on his team(and possibly a bottom pairing). So it will be unfair to think that he will come in and play significant minutes next season. I think it will be for the best to let him stay in SEL another season and then think about bringing him up here.

  30. @ Brett Gee: I got the impression on that goal that Omark saw Rinne was too deep/too tall to ease the puck over top and found some space along the ice. 32. Interesting comments coming from Ottawa on what looked like a scorched earth philosphy but perhaps isn't going to be one afterall

They won’t part with their early pick because, as Murray said this week, “We feel very strongly that we will draft one young player that should player on this team next year.”

After that, however, all the picks could be in play.

“We will probably try, without a question, to sign a top-six forward from the free-agent market or through a draft pick to make a trade,” Murray said, “to use one of those picks to get a player that maybe some other team can’t afford to keep, or whatever.”

    ReplyDelete
  33. I'm firmly in the Larsson camp. I thought there was no way that the Oil would be able to draft 1st overall again and grab him last off-season, but Tambellini is pulling it off by leaving glaring holes the size of [insert something of considerable size here to complete the metphor] in the sides of this sinking team.

I think Larsson is every bit the calibre of prospect that Hall is, except on D. Hopefully since he's been shut down since the WJC his nagging injury issues this season will be fixed up and he'll be good to go again next season.

Hall, Eberle, and Paajaarvi up front with Larsson firing pinpoint passes to them up the ice would be something to behold. Our very own Lidstrom...I like fantasy land so much better than reality, it's nice here.

I personally am leaning towards Larsson or Couturier. I think either fills a major need on this team and would likely play in the NHL this coming year. To show the fans how committed to youth this team is (while secretly trading away anyone of value over the age of 23).

    Just kidding, great song though.

A couple of weeks back, Gary Dorkface breezes through town and tells us we’re lucky to have an NHL owner who is willing to pump $100 large into our puny market’s new Hockeydome.

This week, we hear the NHL is seriously eyeing a previously failed market, with an arena smaller than ours and an economy that’s three-quarters the size of our puny one.

  38. Nennog, Ottawa doesn't seem to draft for need so much as best player available [BPA].

I think you should always draft BPA, and if that's who they think Larsson is, that's who they'll get. With his head coach's ties to Ottawa, and how much he's been raving and touting the young man, I can't see Ottawa passing on him, but I could easily be wrong.

If I were a lion and you were a tuna, I would swim out in the middle of the ocean and freaking eat you and then I'd bang your tuna girlfriend.

Tambellini: OK, first off: a lion, swimming in the ocean. Lions don't like water. If you placed it near a river or some sort of fresh water source, that make sense. But you find yourself in the ocean, 20 foot wave, I'm assuming off the coast of South Africa, coming up against a full grown 800 pound tuna with his 20 or 30 friends, you lose that battle, you lose that battle 9 times out of 10. And guess what, you've wandered into our school of tuna and we now have a taste of lion. We've talked to ourselves. We've communicated and said 'You know what, lion tastes good, let's go get some more lion'. We've developed a system to establish a beach-head and aggressively hunt you and your family and we will corner your pride, your children, your offspring.

Lowe: How you gonna do that?

Tambellini: We will construct a series of breathing apparatus with kelp. We will be able to trap certain amounts of oxygen. It's not gonna be days at a time. An hour? Hour forty-five? No problem. That will give us enough time to figure out where you live, go back to the sea, get some more oxygen, and stalk you. You just lost at your own game. You're outgunned and out-manned.

sorry Dennis my memories of WKRP are mostly of Bailey Quarters and what I would do with her after a couple of bottles of wine

that's great stuff Mr. D. regarding the Peg.

So if I have this right (and I've seen this a few summers running now so I'll eat a bug if I'm not) we're in for ~ three more months of rage, followed by a month of excitement which will degenerate into angry arguments as we get to the draft.

Then there will be joy and hope with the Oiler picks but this will be overwhelmed by a flood of bitterness when ST jettisons Hemsky and (probably) a few other useful or relatively useful pieces.

Then there will be forlorn hope leading up to Canada Day and then the remainder of the summer will be spent in despair as we watch other teams improve themselves or at least try to.

September will roll around and we will be caught up in the excitement of training camp. Ten games into the season we will realize that we wil be a lottery club for the third season running and we'll start the cycle all over again.

There, just saved everyone the trouble of logging in and getting worked up. ;)

  51. Dennis, if Ottawa is stupid enough to try to salvage things with what they currently have, I think they're likely to look like we did circa 2007-09. Anderson may have bolstered this goaltending in the short run, but they have sunk so much money into ineffective and aging forwards and d-men that it's difficult to see how even signing someone like Brad Richards would make the difference.

They get the "privilege" of devoting $12.3M to their top 3 D (Gonchar, Kuba and Phillips) all of whom are aging and proving remarkably ineffective this year. At 36, a guy like Gonchar might be done completely, though the Sens will have to pay him until 2013.

Up front, they've got the trio of Spezza, Alfredsson and Michalek costing $16.2M for the next couple years (and that Spezza contract will be like a lead weight until 2015 - he's got to be the dictionary definition of a "fair weather player").

In other words, they've already got half their cap room for the next 2 years invested in old, declining players (and the underperforming Michalek) with contracts too large to be easily moved. This is, in fact, the perfect time for Ottawa to tank, reload with some younger players and clear out bad contracts.

Or, put another way: there may be a team with a worse short-term prognosis than the Oil!

  59. Trust me 36 is not old. Watched OTR and Messier still looks like he can play at 50 like all the rest of us 50 year olds :-)I still remember him routinely making bad cross ice breakouts in his own end playing with Matti Hagman

I sincerely hope you guys are right about the Penner trade. I do not believe it was an adequate trade but somebody on TSN telling me so does not change my mind.

Fact that Oiler management think he can become a #5 D man is also not reassuring in the least. Jason Smith played all of the tough minutes in SCF as a #2 D man. Bad comparison.

In looking at #20 to 30 picks saw again the 2003 draft and started crying ...... I knew about Parise but Getzlaf,Burns, Kesler, Richards, Perry ALL went after the Oiler 1st round pick.

That is truly horrible .....it is almost pick the worse possible player available.

For those of you that suggest draft pedigree or World Junior history are really important, subsquent development be damned: Shawn Belle was on the 2nd pairing on Canada's best World Junior team and was also selected 30th overall in the spectacular 2003 draft.

  60. denis:

Do you still think Pouliot is better than Parise?

50 cents for Hemsky is better than signing him long-term.

Imagine all the vet 3rd line C's we could buy use with Hemsky's money. You should be happy.

    ReplyDelete
  61. "Nothing like Hemsky getting injured the game after trade deadline. *#&$ hell!"

Hemsky's easily our best player on the IR. That has to count for something.

Agree with you. Khabby is like a seat filler at the Oscars.... he can sit in a chair when the star gets up to go take a piss. Course if you are diving for the bottom, 4 out of 5 games he can really help you in that regard

Also agree DD looks a wee bit fragile.

Hey Khabby clears on waivers and we put him in the AHL do we have the same munber (salary) in the minors that Cactus says Ottawa has as old "overpays" on its NHL roster? Yup, Ottawa's GM is sure stupid

    ReplyDelete
  63. Gerber stole some meaningless games for the Leafs down the stretch in 08/09

It moved them from picking 4th (Evander Kane) or 5th (Brayden Schenn) to 7th (Kadri)

    Fear the Gerber

The funny thing is, if Burke had just hung on to Gerber on a cheap 1 year contract, they wouldn't have finished anywhere near 29th and given Boston the 2nd overall. Instead they let him head to the Euro leagues, and Toskala screwed the pooch. Other than putting a bow on top they couldn't have done more to gift wrap Seguin for the Bruins; ah those crazy oribonts.

    ReplyDelete
  64. I think people are far too anxious to throw the towel in on Gagner. He might not be the #1 center we hoped he was (there is still some chance though), but if you're giving him up and a 1st, you better be damn sure about what you're getting with a 8-12-ish overall D man.

Anyways, the Oilers definitely need to start losing better! "We traded away Penner! Don't make us get rid of Hemsky now!".

    ReplyDelete
  65. Hemsky's easily our best player on the IR. That has to count for something.

Crosby and Malkin are easily the best players the Pens have on the IR...what does that count for? Nonsu?

No question that Pouliot is a better player than Parise today!!! Without doubt

Mind you Parise is injured whereas MAP is a point a game man in the AHL

    ReplyDelete
  69. Racki, Hemsky is gone again with a shoulder injury. They say 2-3 weeks, but seeing there is nothing to play for, why not shelf him now, so he can go on a tear until next years trade deadline.

  71. "I think people are far too anxious to throw the towel in on Gagner."

    - Lander is the future 3C of this hockey team

    - Edmonton has identified a need for a top 6 center (re: Schenn)

    - Shawn Horcoff is a 40 point guy making 5.5M (his contract is unmovable)

I'm sure management would rather keep Gagner than Horcoff but what are you going to do?

  74. CrazyCoach: Yah there doesn't seem to be really any reason to play him right now, does there? Other than to add to his resume that he played 56 games this season instead of 47. Oi.

There's what, 18 games left? He'll be out for close to half of those as is... I'd rather they do what Woodguy says too and just ride Khabby for a while and seal the deal ;)

    ReplyDelete
  83. Traktor: I am OK with trading away Gagner, more than I ever have been. So I'm not 100% sold that he's a great center either. But I just think it would be overpayment to give up a mid-late 1st plus Gagner to draft around 8th or so required to get Hamilton.

As for Lander, he's still a big unknown.. although I'm confident that yes, probably 3rd line in time is a reasonable expectation to have for him.

I think I just really have a tough time taking our 6th overall C-man, PLUS a pick, and drafting a guy who ISS rates at 10th or so. It just seems like we're throwing away a good asset because he isn't scoring big here yet.

I will definitely concede that he is becoming less and less a top C in my mind though, more so because of his play without the puck. But he could have a lot of value to a team out East though, and therefore fetch us something better.

    ReplyDelete
  84. Thanks for the kind words boys.

Seriously though - who's streaming the date on Justin.tv? I nominate BD and book;e. Even if the date is a failure if they're giving colour comentary on it, it's bound to be gold. You guys can get pick your own inside the game analyst and fight over who's doing play-by-play and who's doing colour.

  135. I think it's been a long time since things have been this dark for the Oilers.

For tonight obviously because 83's out again so a nearly unwatchable team crosses over To the unwatchable.

but, moreover, overall, given what we have in terms of Real players and what the overall plan is and the guys who are running the show

You need more than three kid fowards plus 10-49-77 to build something around.

13's still lost, 89's losing ground this year and who the fuck cares about 5 and/or thinks he's the answer to anything. Plus, 58's yet to make hay for any number of consecutive games and Teubet was already leaning towards suspect status in his first org.

Note: I didn't include Whitney in that discussoion because the first person who talks about 83 being injury prone - which he admittedly is - had also better include the Christly 6 in that narrative as well.

Plus, it's like me and a couple of others said last week: not all the highly touted picks are gonna turn and/or will avoid injury.

So hearing about Pitlick losing time drives home that point as well.

The old joke about HFBoards were how all hands over there would expect every prospect to turn out and that the world would be all sunshine and lollipops. Well, it seems like the brass has fallen into the same trap with the trade of 27 for hopes and dreams and all the arrows pointing 83 straight out the door as well.

It's a lottery team this year and there's a great chance it's a lottery team next year and then out of the playoffs again in 2013.

So, we're running on five years out of the playoffs with six an excellent bet and seven not something you'd balk at putting money on either.

Plus, it's up to all the kids in the pipe to make the jump without injury or much regression because if the Oilers don't realize the value of their own in-house Real players than why would we believe they're about to try and procure some from outside? Or if they do that they'll know what to look for.

Like I said, it's pretty dark right now.

    ReplyDelete

    ReplyDelete
  137. I'm on Atlantic time again and therefore a few hours late in responding but there was some discussion early ind the thread about the oilers throwing an RFA offer at Weber. Not saying they won't but that the system makes it so they shouldn't.

Linking the compensation to rounds in the NHL draft unfairly penalizes bad teams and rewards good teams, the exact opposite of what should be happening if we want even talent distribution and parity. For a simple example, let's take the Penner year and say the compensation was a first rounder. The price for Tampa Bay to sign Penner is Steven Stamkos. The price for Detroit to sign Penner is
Thomas McCollum. That's a massive difference.

It's akin to going to the Toyota dealership and finding out the price for the Highhlander for you as a septic tank cleaner is $125,000 but the Cardiovascular surgeon gets his for $12,000.

I've discussed a solution in the past but it takes 1000 words so we'll see the interest first but this is a real loophole and if RFAs ever become a real way to accumulate talent on a level with UFAs or the draft, it could have serious consequences.

    ReplyDelete
  138. I may get roasted for this, but I think that we can compete for a playoff spot next year.

Now that I have your attention :)

I think 7 moves will make us a much more competitive team.

    1. sign jones to a two year contract of 1 million per year

    2. At the draft, target a team that is close to the cap and does not have a first rounder or needs more draft picks. For example, but not linited to, the flyers. They have crazy depth on D; however, Coburn is a ufa after next year and they are close to the cap. Also, Leino is a UFA this year and Meszaros makes a pretty big ticket.

I would make a pitch to Holmgrom for

    Flyers: LA first, Foster, third
Oilers: B. Coburn or Meszaros, Rights to Leino

There are other teams in the flyers position also like the sharks or rangers that LA's first for a player could be enticing for.

    3. Bring Ladner over this year so that he is seasoned for the start of next season.

    4. Trade Brule for David Clarkson. We need an actual tough guy who can play hockey and our salary cap room could be an asset to a team like the devils.

    5. Draft Larsson and play him in the AHL for a season with Teubert

    6. Sign Wisnewski to a two year overpay deal like 4 million a year.

    7. Resign Hemsky

    Hall Horcoff Hemsky
    Leino Gagner Eberle
    MPS Ladner Omark
    Jones Cogs Clarkson

    Whitney Gilbert
    Coburn Wisnewski
    Smid Peckham
    Petry

    DD
    Booze

I think those moves are all achievable and I believe that this team could compete for the playoffs.

  141. Ottawa is screwed if they try to right the ship in the off-season. A sure fire plan for mediocrity is likely a foot.

Murray has shown he can sometimes know what he is doing. The phillips move makes more sense in this light but less sense than taking a breather for a season or two.

We're in permanent vacation mode. I cannot stomach half cheering for losses another go round next season. They have to fix the draft order. You should not have any motivation to intentionally suck. It is not a thing that should be rewarded so richly.

Should be an even money lottery for all teams falling out of the playoffs. That way there is no guarantees. If LA falls short, there is an even money chance that pick is really valuable. If Ottawa and Edmonton finish last, there is nothing but shame to be handed out. The absolute logical wrong being witnessed occuring here is just brutal.

Lets try and come up with a creative nomenclature for intentionally running aground. I'll go first

  143. I posted this a couple days ago in the predators thread but I didn't get any bites. Maybe this time.

You think the rangers would trade Chris Drury for Sheldon Souray.

There are rumours that Drury is headed for a buyout next year. He's got a 7M cap hit but his salary is only 5M, which is 500K more than Souray. We would spend that on a 4th line C anyway and we don't need the cap space next year.

Maybe it could work out for both teams.

It does bite into our cap space though...and that seems to be a piece of the justification why dealing a 30 ish goal scoring LW for dice rolls was a good idea.

  145. Using movie/tv show references for Oiler management are good, but I was more thinking of a Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels Movie from the mid 90's

  147. Ok, Hemsky out for three weeks. Let's see if I've got the rest of this accurate:

    - with Hemsky out, the Oilers go on an unusual hot streak, driven mostly by percentages and luck, which oddly enough cools off around the time Hemsky returns to the lineup.

    - Tambellini, seeing this as some sort of indicator that this team is better off without 83 (kind of like those who were arguing that the Oilers with Horcoff on IR were a better team, only in this case, even a dumber stance), trades him at the draft to move LA's pick up 7 or 8 spots in the first round, or to a team for another late 1st rounder, two second round picks, and Tyler Cuma.

    - The Oil then struggle to top-five picks in 2012 and 2013, wondering why a RW 1/2 punch of Eberle and Omark can't "carry the mail".

Sounds like how the current Oilers org would roll, right?

  148. Maudite some basketball fans are advocating a tournament for the 14 teams out of the playoffs to play to see who gets the 1st pick.

That is win the LOSER tourney and you pick # 1. Do not think you would have traded Penner at the deadline so you could get to 30th overall. You need him too much for the Loser pool

    Idea definitely has some merit

  151. Bailey from WKRP reminds me of the Ginger v Maryann debate with Bailey playing the Maryann role and Jennifer Marlowe the Ginger role.

My interest in watching the Oil tonight can best be quantified by the movie title of a Robert Downey nugget from 1987.

I bet Alex Trebek is absolutely swimming in poon.

Would now be a good time to give Giroux a get out the minors free card to see if he's capable of lighting the lamp in the bigs?

He should learn to fight if he's gonna drop his mitts.

  153. CM, depends how valuable Drury's 56 percent faceoff rate it. At this point, it might just be worth it, but does Drury have a no movement clause? Seems like anyone over $5M doees these days.

Dennis, while I too lament the lack of Hemsky's dynamic presence on my TV tonight, I find it hard to believe that the events of the last week have pushed the team into "unwatchable" territory. Before the trade deadline, this was a 30th place team that lost a lot. It has the worst powerplay and penalty kill. The Oilers get scored on more than anyone but woeful Colorado and only the disaster in Ottawa puts the puck in the opposition's net less than us. This team may still be worth watching to see exciting youth development, out of misguided loyalties, for the love of hockey or because there's somehow nothing better to do.

I understand (even if I do not agree with) the passionate outcry following the Penner trade, with some saying the team wasn't worth watching anymore. But he was a good player making important contributions to a losing team, not some sort of dynamic talent that glues you to the screen. I find it admirable if some people, motivated by conviction, want to send a message to management by boycotting broadcasts or going to games. But claiming that one trade and one injury have made this 30th place team unwatchable? That stretches credulity.

  154. Raquel Welch is now doing tv ads for reading glasses AND I would still bang her like a rusty screen door.

    ReplyDelete
  155. Fair to say the Penner trade doesn't so much extend the rebuild as it does confirm the timeline to the world at large? He's 1 player. Claiming he was the difference between contending or not next year strikes me as fairly gross exaggeration. If Penner's traded back to the Ducks, he's still a 2nd line winger on that team behind Getzlaf, Ryan and Perry. Good player and I'll miss him but we're not talking about Crosby or Stamkos levels of impact here.

  156. hbomb:

Luckily for you I expect Tambellini to sign Hemsky. 6M for a guy who has played 67 games the past two years.

One thing for certain is Tambellini isn't getting more for value for 83 than he would have at the TDL. Especially with his recent injury.

I'm starting to agree with the rest that Tambs should be fired but for me he should be canned for not dealing Hemsky. Tambellini is going to wait until he has zero value just like Souray.

    ReplyDelete
  157. Cactus: taking two real players away from a bunch of drek? I would say that moves it into the unwatchable.

Lee: moving 27 for nothing that helps us until at least 2013 and then alluding to 83 being out the door?

that's heading towards perennial loser territory.

  158. The Oilers are heading towards perennial loser territory? I think it's safe to say they've been there, done that and bought the t-shirt. 2006 was smoke and mirrors (1 year of Pronger, the trap, Cinderella goalie, etc.) This team has been very bad for a very long time.

  162. I am definitely going to watch the game tonight. It will be a great way to reste before the report cards are due.

BTW, if you ever want a more inconsistent predictor of future success than goalie draft scouting reports, you need to go back into your past and re-read your own report cards. Writing these things is a waste of time (unless it means keeping my job, in which case they are invaluable and I love doing it).

  163. Lee: true enough but now they are just taking a loser approach. As in let's deal off almost everyone that has real value and bet on great selections and unfailing health of great selections.

The 2006 team was a very good hockey team. The construction and coaching of that team is something of a good model I think.

  172. Remember that guy who used to do the heavy cherry picking hit & run posts all over the Edmonton Oilers blogs, and then it was discovered he had assembled a private forum of like minded internet posters, kind of like a secret society of hockey forum contributors, but instead of discussing hockey they gossiped about internet commentors on other hockey websites, but as if that wasn't pathetic enough, when they believed that they were protected by anonymity it turns out their conversation began taking a turn toward the homoerotic, as they began sharing fantasies about internet hockey contributors and what they did with their bodily fluids and the like..?

What ever happened with those weirdos? Surely they're too ashamed to come around here anymore and pull off their tired, old schtick.

The biggest revelation I got from it was that we're nearly 5 years removed from the Pronger deal and we're only now reaping any benefit from it (Eberle).

Oh, and that Strudwick fight was almost worth carrying him on the roster for the entire season.
