Trade Deadline

Lots of attractive items for everybody on the rumor wire today. Laddy to Chicago, LAK apparently offering Schenn in a deal (but probably not to EDM) and the hits just keep on coming.

A perfect trade deadline (for me) would look like this:

STAYING PUT

Ales Hemsky: Braydon Schenn is a helluva prospect, but the Oilers have the #1 overall pick this summer to address the future. A line with Hemsky on it in 2011-12 gives the Oilers a better chance to compete for a playoff spot, and a signed Hemsky sends a strong message to the kids: we keep those who perform.

Dustin Penner: I've been somewhat surprised by the gap between the value we as Oilers fans place on DP and the type of return being discussed for him. A team shopping for one or the other (Hemsky or Penner) is more likely to get a bargain by asking for #27.

AVAILABLE
  • Ladislav Smid: Available partly because there are so few teams (and therefore defensemen) out of the playoff race, if the return is strong enough ST should pull the trigger. It would be nice to get an NHL ready defenseman in return.
  • Andrew Cogliano: A cynical person might suggest Cogliano's handling this year (best linemates available) is a pump and dump. Toronto has long been rumored to have an interest.
  • Ryan Jones: For some reason he's the guy many believe should be retained. Probably because the Oilers don't have many wingers with decent size and skill and any idea about checking. However, if the club is serious about contending next season then Jones role will be played by a Pisani-type and this player will be fighting with kids for time on skill lines. If they can get value--like a third round pick--then I think they should make the deal.
  • Kurtis Foster: Talk about having a week that gets noticed. He was ripping the puck all over hell's half acre again, but this time he scored a couple and maimed the captain. Defensemen are at a premium and Foster is a player Edmonton could afford to move along based on his performance this year.
  • Jim Vandermeer: He'll get some interest, these guys always do. Vandermeer is a veteran defender who could play EV and PK minutes for a team with injury troubles. I'll tell you this: Buffalo would have been thrilled to dress Vandermeer in the deciding game against Carolina in spring 2006.
  • Martin Gerber: Inexpensive and he performed well this season in North America. Seriously.
One final thing: I think Hemsky and Penner are gone. I know that they may not go at the deadline, but this has become so public that it's hard to marry the management's body language to signing either guy long term. Damn shame. And a mistake, unless they get mondo return. MONDO.

  1. That's a lot of Dmen out the window. Could bget ugly here and I can't see Tambi doing that.

I can't see a team trading an NHL ready Dman for Smid. Why would they tread water?

I don't think listening to offers on Penner and Hemsky will have an effect. Other teams get to do this all the time, why should we be different.

    ReplyDelete
  2. I don't think he'll trade all of them. By NHL ready Dman, I'm talking about someone who is at the AHL level or possibly getting a look this season but unready (Nick Leddy might be an example, or Shawn Lalonde).

    ReplyDelete
  3. Oh no Spoiler...someone might trade a defensive asset. you know like Blum from Nashville.
I also think that San Jose might be a dark horse to get Smid. They have been looking for inexpensive but good options to upgrade their Blue and they might like Smid!

    ReplyDelete
  4. Or Jon Blum. :-)

Sumoil: Good call on SJS. They need some more experience there imo.

    ReplyDelete
  5. You and spoiler are half-right about Smid. You don't trade him for a D. You trade him for a GlenX type.

    ReplyDelete
  6. Yeah, but I think you don't have to take futures.

Ideally, you allow other teams to balance their F-D with ours.

Similarly, I think Jones can get you the D prospect.

    ReplyDelete
  7. If it's clear to Tambo that Hemsky wants to test free agency, notsaying he wants to leave, but that he's not going to extend

Is it 100% imperative to trade now?

    I think it is...

At best we are all talking out of our behinds, because only tambs and 83 know if he's gonna extend.

Without that assurance, it's just as big a gamble to trade Hemmer as it is to keep him. And the way that Schenn is tracking, I'd wager that Schenn is more of a sure thing than 83 if he wants to test FA

    ReplyDelete
  8. Shawn Lalonde? Man, that's one bad hockey name.

    ReplyDelete
  9. Fun exchange on twitter..

Kypreos: I'm confident it will get done. Those fuckers at tsn try to discredit me all the time. I'm really pissed! As always....thanks for yo ...

McKenzie: @RealKyper You probably thought that was a direct message Kypper. LOL.

  10. In my heart I want Hemsky and Penner to both stay. For quite a while, often the only real entertainment on the Oil was to watch Hemsky. Now of course, Hall,Eberle and Omark provide entertainment as well.

In my mind, I wonder, if we are a 30th place team with them, why would we keep them? I have been a Oiler's fan since the very beginning in the wha. With the exception of 2006, these last few years have been pathetic.

They have to be competitive next year or as far as I am concerned, they can move to Quebec and I will go back to being a Flyers fan.

  11. Lebrun tweets Columbus took Rivet, Caps take Sturm off of waivers.

  12. One final thing: I think Hemsky and Penner are gone. I know that they may not go at the deadline, but this has become so public that it's hard to marry the management's body language to signing either guy long term. Damn shame. And a mistake, unless they get mondo return.

    I disagree.

There has been a lot of noise this season that they want 83 long term.

A private dinner with Katz and Stauffer actually putting $ and term together (I think it was $5.5/yr 5 years), there is a lot of smoke there given how close Stauffer is to Katz.

I think 83 is here long term unless they can get MONDO back.

Schenn + Voynov or Forbort would be too much to pass up.

    ReplyDelete
  13. Pascal Leclaire and and Ty Conklin on waivers per Lebrun.

    ReplyDelete
  14. Buffalo would also have been happy to play Blum in that series, if he's that close, he's ready.

My point is the same as Deano's. I think if Smid gets moved it is for a pick or a F. Or as part of a larger deal. I will be very surprised if it is straight across for another Dman.

And I would guess Strudwick and one of Foster and Vandy move. Likely JVM given Foster has another year.

    ReplyDelete
  15. Greiss to Edmonton just popped up on Twitter via Spector's Hockey from somebody called Lady Stanley. Don't know if it is for real but if so that would have to mean another move?

I'm a long time reader so just wanted to say thanks LT and all of the commenters for providing entertainment where the Oilers could not since summer of '06.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Beach is interesting. Well it is his first pro year, but not a great debut to the Pros. However he does look to be having a better time since the new year. So it can go either way. He certainly is a rugged winger

    ReplyDelete
  17. Kypreos: Opps!!!!! Was I thinking out loud again? My apologies to all.. I meant to say how much fun and stress free this trade deadline day is.

    Hah.. What a joker.

    ReplyDelete
  18. "To all Oilers fans, I am still assessing this team there are many holes in the lineup and I think after 3 years I am still unsure of who should stay and who should go. There are deals on the table for our players but I am unsure if they are the best for this team, it is better to wait and ask Kevin Lowe on Tuesday if I should have pulled the trigger. Thank you.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Yeah WG, I just can't see the content starved media repeating each other's rumours as having that big effect on re-signing either player. And players know it is a business, part and parcel.

    ReplyDelete
  20. McElhinney on waivers. Goalies falling from the heavens..or a tall tree...or something.

    ReplyDelete
  21. this should be called the twitter weekend. Twitter had been open in on of the tabs since yesterday!

    ReplyDelete
  22. My girl scowled at me when last night when I said "Maybe he's injured! You know..just a small injury...like a broken pinky or something." referring to Hemsky being crushed into the boards. "Then they won't trade him!".

I hope Hemksy stays. I hope Penner stays too, but if one has to go, make it be him.

    ReplyDelete
  23. More waivers from Lebrun....

Bret Carson (Car), Jason Jaffray (Ana), DJ King (Wash), Nathan Lawson and Rob Schremp (NYI), and Tim Stapleton (Atl).

Not Rob Scrhemp! Aaaaghh! We're first in line!!!

    ReplyDelete
  24. My ideal deadline.:

    Khabby to anyone for anything
Strudwick to Pitt for a 6th
JVM to Chi for a 3rd
Brule to Van for a 2nd in 2012

    ReplyDelete
  25. Look at the waiver wire and consider how batshit crazy it was to sign an ancient goalie to a four year deal at $3.75M/yr. Just unreal. As it was said by many at the time, this was grounds for immediate dismissal.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Schremp on waivers! You mean we can get the hockey savior (small s) back???

    Oh please no.

    ReplyDelete
  27. TSN has this up on Khabibulin...

Khabibulin was hurt on Monday, played the next night against the Minnesota Wild, but was not seeing any signs of improvement and had another checkup when the team returned to Edmonton.

You know...the game where he faced 23 shots and let 4 in. Derrr...

    ReplyDelete
  28. DJ King is the knuckle dragger we have been looking for.

    ReplyDelete
  29. LT

Belle did not dress last night or OKC Injured or HS?

    ReplyDelete
  30. Schremp on waivers is a typo. Schremp on waivers for the purpose of signing him long term because he's so great and the minuses aren't his fault I'd believe.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Thanks for clarifying that on Schremp LT.

Rob Schremp didn't invent hockey, he just makes it so much better.

Now add a one eyed goaltender and we're really cooking with gas...

    ReplyDelete
  32. I don't recall from last season, but is this type of waiver activity normal leading up to the deadline?

    ReplyDelete
  33. King is also signed for next year. SMac isn't

    ReplyDelete
  34. dooz - no, as time passes, more teams have snookered themselves w.r.t. bodies and cap space. They can't add anything w/o dropping something.

But we will hold on to Smac, JFJ, Fraser, Struds etc instead of upgrading.

    ReplyDelete
  35. DJ King is from my home town. I would put money on him being an Oil fan growing up. But sadly I don't think he is much of an upgrade on Smac. Both can fight but both can't play hockey.

    Ribs,

I added a wack of guys to my twitter today so I should have all the updates now lol. Just need to figure out how to get it to beep my iphone when each new one comes up.

    ReplyDelete

OTC and Kevin Lowe wanted a STANLEY CUP CHAMPION goalie.

Tambellini was v1.0 then, I don't hang that one entirely on him.

Overpay and too long of term were hallmarks of Lowe, his fingerprints are all over that one.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Bob Stauffer loves King. Might that be the first tweet?

    http://twitter.com/Bob_Stauffer

    ReplyDelete
  38. I'm telling you guys that an eye problem is the Golden Ticket for putting Khabby on LTIR for the next two years.

Really tough for a doctor to contradict a guy if he says his vision is blurry.

    ReplyDelete
  39. I figured that was the case, I'm starting to think with the trend of bad contract players getting waived due to cap constraints, players may be a little wary to sign huge contracts unless they are sure they can cover the bet. Seabrook gets signed today to the tune of 5.8 million, probably closer to 7 a couple seasons ago if he was a RFA then. I may be wrong, but I think we will see a trend of deflating UFA/RFA contracts in the future.

    ReplyDelete
  40. I would definitely take a shot at claiming Brett Carson. 6'4" 220, 25 years-old. + 7 in 12 games for Carolina.

What's to lose???? Isn't Chorney hurt anyway...

    ReplyDelete
  41. MrSmitty - Good stuff. I don't know about the beeping though. Wouldn't the thing be going off all day? Hah.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Actually I'm dreading the MacT ruined him post.

Maybe they play Rob Schremp hockey in Europe? Anyone know?

    ReplyDelete
  43. Or did you want Slippers excellent comment...

I kinda want to see every bubble prospect in the system called up ahead of Schremp now.

By the end of the year I want to see a second line composed of McDonald, Sesito and Trukhno... fuck that, I want three "scoring lines" with the third made up of Corzanni, Rohlfs and Paukovich; all of them will be scoring at a PPG clip and before each puck drop SaM Gagner will come out in an elf costume and announce into the PA: Merry Fucking Christmas Sugar Tits, hey Rob, go getch yor fucking shine box!!!

    ReplyDelete
  44. Kyle Beach would be a great pickup from Chicago if possible. He's probably not capable of consistently playing in the top 6, but the role of shotgun goon might suit him. He had good numbers in junior, scoring 52 goals in 68 games in his final season. His numbers in the AHL this year aren't stellar, but even with 30 points in 55 games he's 4th in team scoring and only 16 back of the team leader. His team worst -18 is cause for concern however.

    ReplyDelete
  45. Anyone know how the waiver process works?

I think if the player clears waivers, he stays in limbo until he is reactivated or assigned to the AHL. His roster spot is open in the meantime.

    Help?

    ReplyDelete
  46. Schremp's on waivers? Come on Tambo, make it happen!!

    ReplyDelete
  47. Deano, 30 days or 10 games I believe to assign him.

    ReplyDelete
  48. Good question Deano.

The waiver wire is, by definition, where Jacques is not allowed to go.

    ReplyDelete
  49. I think it has been widely reported that the Oilers are asking the moon for Hemsky. I doubt he's going anywhere. Penner strikes me as a different matter.

Hemsky is often worth the price of admission himself, but unless he's a fool he'll walk away from this circus in 17 months anyways. The only thing that can stop that is if the kids really take a big leap next year. That might trick him.

Even if that happens ... Katz/Stauffer/Lowe/Tambellini (I think I've got the order right) will hoop this team by filling up the bottom half of the roster with guys from Central Casting, having requested a player with 'grit'. This as opposed to guys who can play.

So it won't end well. Surely Hemsky or one of his advisors will recognize that.

    ReplyDelete
  50. This was an important part of our "team of the future," the young guns who would carry the way to glory"

    Pouliot-Schremp-O'marra
    Jacques-Cogliano-Nilsson
    Grebeshkov-Smid
    Plante-Chorney
    JDD

Remember, a large chunk of our prospects- e.g. Lander, Hamilton, Marincin, Petry- will be more Pouliot or Plante than Hemsky-Gilbert. a few will max out as Smids. Others might become as good as inconsistent Grebeshkovs, only to disappear to Russia, injuries, or declining play.

This is the main reason you keep Hemsky and Penner. You can't assume more than 1/4 prospects at best will turn into anything really valuable that isn't replaceable on waivers.

Eberle and Hall are turning out great. (Omark looks okay. Petry showed flashes.) Prospect luck has run with us there. But just because it's with us now, doesn't mean it will stay with us.

    ReplyDelete
  51. Ribs: the slipper post. I giggle like an idiot every time I read it. Splendid stuff, just top drawer.

    ReplyDelete
  52. Trade Hemsky AND Gagner to LA if that is what it takes to get Schenn.

    xxx - Couturier - xxx
    xxx - Schenn - xxx
    xxx - Lander - xxx

    Horcoff for Komi
Penner for Toronto's two late 1sts
Vandy, Jones, Fraser, Foster for any pick available
    Smid for Beach

Call up O'Marra, McDonald, Motin and Plante and secure #1

    ReplyDelete
  53. The advantage of Traktor's plan is we would draft first at 2011, 2012, and probably in the lottery in 2013 unless Tamb can work the UFA pool.

I'm not sure this town can endure that much losing. It's a hockey mad market, but there are limits.

If they aren't at least sort of competitive next year, attendance could take a hit midway through the season. If we don't compete until 2013-2014, that will be an expansion team-esque run of non-competitiveness.

    ReplyDelete
  54. It's a point I made awhile ago but I think that these guys will move either on Monday or at the draft because I can't remember the last time some of our players were talked about this much Without moving.

If you're name is out there then you're gone sooner or later.

And if these guys won't sign here then of course you should move them on draft day or right now if the offer is off the charts.

The problem might be getting them to sign and as Vic said why would anyone sign here? There has to be the feeling that the next calamity is just around the corner.

I was reading something the other day where Hamhuis was talking about why he signed in Van and he said that from playing in so many Worlds he would pick up a lot from other players about their likes and dislikes of other orgs. So, that pipeline is always flowing for the outside parties.

On the inside you have comments from Horcoff that say that Souray was a good guy so all these guys are here now and they see what happened to a guy who used to sit next to them. How do you think it makes them feel going forward? These guys aren't dummies and they can see just how broken the D has become. Do they have confidence that Lowe and Co can fix it?

So, the story in the forefront for Monday is if one of 27 or 83 get moved and what value we receive in return; I don't think many people give a fuck about 5 being moved because next year 49-58 should be allowed their mistakes but real D should be complimenting 6-77 up top.

But the bigger story is there's really no choice if these guys won't resign and who could really blame them if they won't.

in that regard the brass have long since tied their own hands and they'd better hope that the three kids don't become sick of the atmosphere as well and that all the prospects turn out.

    ReplyDelete
  55. If Carolina signs him to a reasonable extension, I think we should try to trade Marincin straight up for Pitkanen this summer.

He could make a huge difference in helping get us to the playoffs next year.

    ReplyDelete
  56. Suddenly it occurred to me that instead of Katz's mafia holding the city of Edmonton to ransom, the people of Edmonton(through their elected officials) should tell the Rexall cosa nostra that either they win a cup within a certain timeframe(4-6 years lol), or else they're getting run out of town.

Let the Oilers see if they can find a new city. Let them go to the USA where the biggest recession since the 1930's will support a new sports franchise desperate to get 15,000 paying idiots every game. Or, let them go to Winnipeg, or Quebec.

Meanwhile the new arena can get built for the Edmonton Predators/Thrashers/Stars/Panthers etc. Simple greed from the NHL will ensure any number of existing franchises about to fold will clamour for the Edmonton market.

And failing everything, we can all dig out our B+W tv sets and return to following either the Habs or Leafs on HNIC.

  58. Komrade Horcov, this is neither the time nor the place. The Eagle has not yet landed (I think he's still in jail).

    ReplyDelete
  59. Weird that the Russian comment disappeared. No "comment deleted." Just gone.

  60. Comrade Horcov, prior to being deleted, was saying thanks for the interesting read.

I knew my time hiding behind iron curtains would pay off.

  61. Okay, there was a cyrillic post there, I swear to god.

    ReplyDelete
  62. Sounds is on.

My daughter's Elmo songs are blaring just fine.

I click "listen now", it opens the new window for the player, but it never loads.

Had to go grab an actual radio. I feel like a peasant.

    ReplyDelete
  63. I saw the cyrillic post too.

I thought he relied on saw-him-good too much.

    ReplyDelete
  64. With Sturm being claimed, the Kings were looking at bringing Loktionov back up to fill atop six forward role.

Well he got hurt last night and is done for the year.

That bodes well (depending on how you feel about moving 83/27) for a desperation move.

    ReplyDelete
  65. LT- It's definitely Comment Thread Hall of Fame Worthy.

    ReplyDelete
  66. I love the suggestions that the flames pick up Rob Shremp off waivers on Team 1260 lol.

  67. This radio show is great LT. Fantastic stuff.

    ReplyDelete
  68. Tencer reports...

The Oilers will go back with Dubnyk in net tomorrow night and are likely to insert Brule into the lineup, potentially at center on 4th line.

    ReplyDelete
  69. Pitkannen wanted out of Edmonton before, so why would we think he wants to be here now?

    ReplyDelete
  70. Bugg coming up, he is usually good for some laughs.

    ReplyDelete
  71. "Pitkanen wanted out of Edmonton before, so why would we think he wants to be here now?"

This was never proven and is highly dubious from my read of the situation.

Even if it was true, they should have done a better job of working with him. It's a two-way street. I'm firmly in the Lowe-MacTavish drove people out of town camp, but I know there's much disagreement with that.

    ReplyDelete
  72. McCabe to NYR for Tim Kennedy and a 3rd.

    As per Eric Francis

    ReplyDelete
  73. 23 back in line up tomorrow as per Tom Gazzola (Oiler PR flak on twitter)

    ReplyDelete
  74. @ WG

I dont really see why FLA did this. that 3rd isnt really a great asset. Maybe they are happy to not pay him that much. But FLa got worse..significantly worse

  75. Jones in today's Sun says the Penner for Bogo rumour just won't go away.

  76. "Hemsky-to-LA trade a non-starter w/o Brayden Schenn coming back to Oil. LA not ready to deal Schenn today. This is a Monday deal, if at all."

    Marc Spector on twitter

    ReplyDelete
  77. Thanks for reading my Hemmer-Pitkanen email on the air LT.

I was throwing that comparable deal out here but nobody bit on bashing it. I definitely think we'd actually be getting screwed badly giving up a prospect like Marincin for a player like Pitkanen - just like I think we' be screwing the Kings by taking Schenn for Hemsky.

By all means hold out for more if it looks like we can get it, but I hope Tambo doesn't walk away if that's what it boils down to.

    ReplyDelete
  78. Gotta downgrade LT for this Ian Walker interview. Guy's married to Bif Naked and he doesn't probe that?

    ReplyDelete
  79. LMHF,
As far as Pitkanen goes, I don't really care enough about that history to sort through the gossip to find proof of Joni's desire to leave town. I mostly enjoyed his play with the exception of the slapshot off the rush that always rattled wide and ended up behind our own net. I don't necessarily disagree with you that the Oilers had/have a lot to learn about handling players with "different" personalities.

The fact that we do know about Pikanen is that he signed a 3 year 12 million dollar contract the day after he was traded to Carolina and he allegedly wanted at least a million more a year to play here. You can choose to believe Pendegrast/Lowe or not (http://slam.canoe.ca/Slam/Hockey/NHL/Edmonton/2008/04/30/5429126-sun.html)

    ReplyDelete
  80. In hindsight it could be argued that signing Pikanen to 5 M would have put the Oilers in better shape than signing Souray for 5.5, but there are enough rented mules beaten around here already.

    ReplyDelete
  81. LT,

First chance to listen to the radio gig, tuned in at about 1:10 pm. Great, great stuff. Intelligent dialogue is unfortunately so rare that to hear it is like manna from on high.

Thanks for that, looking forward to catching more.

    ReplyDelete
  82. Why is anyone even talking about Pitkanen?!.. gimmie a break..

As if the first go around wasnt bad enough..

    ReplyDelete
  83. LT - Just listened to the radio show for the first time, and I am thoroughly impressed. Intelligent dialogue with knowledgeable hockey minds that unfortunately is all too rare in this city. Keep up the good work!

  84. Does the immutable and bodily fact of Scarlett Johansson in itself constitute proof of an omnipotent and all-knowing God?

And if so, what is She saying to us?

About the trade deadline, I mean.

    ReplyDelete
  85. I saw Schenn in several games early in the season and was quite impressed. Thought he might challenge for the Calder so I was really surprised that LA sent him back.

His numbers were certainly impressive at the WJC. However, I'm not sure if he was even the best CDN forward. By my eye, I thought Jaden Schwartz (STL pick) might have been better but then he was injured early on. Too bad. Would have loved to get a longer look.

BTW, that Schwartz kid was putting up very impressive numbers in the NCAA - Parise-like at the same age.

Speaking of STL, they also have this Russian kid, Tarasenko, who, along with Kuznetzov (WSH pick), might have been the two best forwards in the whole tourney.

So I guess my point is that if we're to trade Hemsky or Penner, STL is a team that I don't dealing with if we get shake either Tarasenko or Schwartz off them.

Yeah, they're a borderline playoff team right now but they really have a solid lineup that can pull off some upsets if they can get in, or if not, do some real damage next season, esp if Perron can make it all the way back. And they are really a team that's built for the present moreso than the future and getting Hemsky/Penner with a year left in their contracts might not be such a bad propostion for them.

    ReplyDelete
  86. Oiler scout (McCarthy, I think) in attendance at today's UND-Bemidji game. Looking at Forbort maybe?

    ReplyDelete
  87. kanadienkyle:

That's a nice bit of info.

I've posted about it a couple of times, but for those that might not have seen that, I think we can be pretty sure the Oilers have some interest in Forbort because they had a FORBORT name bar prepared and lying on the bed during one of the segments of the first Oil Change documentary.

*Warning* Crazy rumor I just made up:

    Penner, Hemsky, 2011 2nd

    for

    Schenn, Forbort, 2011 1st

this work for either team? Obviously if the Oilers could get more, ask for it, but you would be adding a forward and defenceman, both of whom would (IMO) top the current prospect depth chart at their respective positions

    ReplyDelete
  88. Sumoil: I think there were some reports that McCabe will go to a contender this deadline but re-sign in Florida in the offseason. If true, that could explain his decreased trade value.

LT, are the fellows at ON responsible for getting your shows archived online? I'm curious because I've only been able to catch pieces of each show and I'd be interested to know when they'll be up.

  89. speeds - I think its too much today for not enough tomorrow. Even though the prospects are blue-chip, they still come with more risk than what we are giving up (i.e. who knows if Schenn or Forbert are going to be even as durable as Hemsky?). Add Simmonds and maybe that is the magic combo. Penner is definitely an U/G on Simmonds regardless what the media pundits think.

    ReplyDelete
  90. Speeds: the problem with that trade is that you'd strip the team of its only top-end vet offence, and I don't necessarily trust v3.0 to replace that through free agency.

  91. Thanks for all the comments and emails today. Dennis, sorry I didn't spend more time on your email but the next guest was ready. Either way, my point was you'll never get an apology from msm so there's no use trying. :-)

Lombardi on the LAK broadcast: "We had to make a roster spot in case something happened at the deadline.

If we do something by Monday we'd need that spot."

Lombardi on Schenn: "It would have to be something significant. Quite frankly I don't think he's going anywhere."

    ReplyDelete
  92. LT:

"Steve Smith" and I have a similar POV regarding moving guys out at the deadline, I would be looking to move all of:

    MacIntyre
    Strudwick
    Khabibulin
    Foster
    Fraser
    Jacques
    Smid*
    Brule*
    Vandermeer
    Cogliano*
    Jones

provided a somewhat decent return (which would vary from player to player)

I don't think the Oilers will move all of Foster, Vandermeer, Smid at the deadline, but I do think they should if they can get a good enough return - hopefully they don't hang on to any of them if they can generate a good enough return just to keep the blueline half-respectable down the stretch. Although, true enough, they shouldn't have trouble trading Smid in the summer, or letting Vandermeer go UFA - I guess in terms of clearing out a body they may not be able to next summer anyways pretty much only Foster fits that bill, and even with him I can see some sort of argument that he might be "better" next season if the depth in front of him improves

I think Bif Naked is locally famous in Vancouver.

Quite a few years ago I was eating at a Van restaurant and Bif was at the table beside me. Her and the older people she was dining with (presumably her parents) were wearing navy blue windbreakers with BIF written on the back. Designed to look like FBI jackets, but with the letters rearranged. Shamelessly drawing attention to herself. It was something to behold, is pathetisad a word?

And funnily enough it worked, she had creepy dudes hitting on her all evening. Right in front of Mom and Dad, who seemed strangely proud with every advance.

It was high end Korean food IIRC, which is every bit as bad as cheap Korean food ... just more expensive. Then the only other Canadian at the table decided he would take a run at Bif after a few drinks. You don't want to see that, nobody does.

Plus I was missing an important Oiler game on that night (so it must've been at least six years ago ... time flies). What a perfect shitstorm of awful.

  97. Marincin for Pitkanen is NOTHING like Schenn for Hemsky.

The Oilers are a 30th place team. You don't trade a top prospect for an expensive mid-career player.

Schenn for Hemsky is like Iginla for Nieuwendyk, where a would be contender trades a top prospect to put them over the top.

Hemsky should only be traded if it fills a hole at centre or on D. If the deal is with LA, that means Schenn has to be in the deal or no deal. If the deal is with Atlanta, and it is Penner, then it has to be for Bogosian or no deal.

I don't think Hemsky's and Penner's names be out there affects re-signing them at all. They are quality NHL forwards on a 30th place team approaching a deadline with an extremely short list of sellers. It was inevitable that trade speculation in the media would be rampant.

Hemsky's gotten more attention from the eastern media than he has ever gotten.

    ReplyDelete
  98. Why is anyone even talking about Pitkanen?!.. gimmie a break..

As if the first go around wasnt bad enough..
    .

Bad enough what? The team was bad enough that he was the best player on the team?

  99. Lombardi just completed an interview with the Kings broadcast crew in which he pulled a Katz:

    "Schenn isn't going anywhere."

    ReplyDelete
  100. Godot:

If the Oilers are willing to trade Hemsky, I don't see why there isn't a deal to be made with LA without Schenn. They might well prefer Schenn, but LA has other pretty interesting pieces.

For instance, I don't think its hard to imagine the Oilers accepting an offer like:

    Hemsky
    for
    Simmonds, Voynov, and Forbort

Whether LA makes that offer is a different question, ...

    ReplyDelete
  101. The nieuwendyk-iginla trade is a nice example of how this situation can help both teams, but it's important to remember that it took Calgary 8 years before they had another winning season after that trade.

    ReplyDelete
  102. A few years ago, Doug Wilson said "Milan Michalek isn't going anywhere." He is still waiting for his Cup.

Brian Burke said "Thank you, Doug. I'll take Pronger and the Cup."

Vancouver may be so strong that waiting for next year might be the right decision for Lombardi. But he may be Dave Nonis'ing himself. Lombardi's successor will win the Cup.

The marquis free agent list this summer is not great. LA's rise to elite may get stalled as Smyth, Williams, and Handzus fall off, and are replaced by younger guys. i.e if Lombardi does nothing, his window for contention may be three years out.

    ReplyDelete
  103. Please no Kyle Beach. He's so overrated by the fans here in Chicago.

Does anyone think his junior numbers are going to hold up in the NHL? It's sure not looking like that so far in Rockford

Why would we want to send assets for a glorified goon? Size and grit is nice, but by itself it doesn't win hockey games.

Also, I can think of no reason to deal Marincin at all, especially for a guy (Pitkanen) who didn't want to be here last time, and we could have signed as an inexpensive FA.

Hopefully Marincin will be a top 4 D and an Oiler a few years from now.

    ReplyDelete
  104. Marincin for Pitkanen is NOTHING like Schenn for Hemsky.

The Oilers are a 30th place team. You don't trade a top prospect for an expensive mid-career player.

So by that logic I assume you wouldn't want the Oilers to keep an equally expensive mid-career player like Hemsky if a top prospect like Schenn is available?

Illustrating that point was why I brought up the example.

I might just rather have Hemsky and Larsson, and start concentrating talent

Rather than Hopkins, Simmonds, Voynov and Forbert.

Thanks to MBS, the Oilers have a deep pipeline. They need quality, not quantity.

And I'm "Mr. Square Peg". I don't see how Tambellini can sell the deal to LA to Edmonton fans without Schenn in the deal.

Then you are potentially adding Schenn and Larsson to the Oilers young group, and that makes a lot of sense.

    ReplyDelete
  108. Vancouver may be so strong that waiting for next year might be the right decision for Lombardi. But he may be Dave Nonis'ing himself. Lombardi's successor will win the Cup.

How? As of right now, the Kings sit fourth in the West. They have the fourth best ES GD in the league. They have the fourth best GD/G in the league. This team has been kicking ass all year and has had some bad luck. The luck has turned and they've got a boatload of Pacific games to close the year.

It's not like the Kings are dying here - they're one of the best teams in the league.

IF they are going to move him, I think they'd be better to do it now than at the draft or at next year's deadline, but that's wild speculation - who knows what kind of offer Tambellini has actually received.

The point on concentrating talents and assets is a good one. Even on D, now, it's not hard to imagine a glut of too many D prospects in the AHL/NHL at once, with all the guys currently in the system plus Marincin, possibly Larsson, plus potentially a D (or two) in Hemsky/Penner trades.

  113. Do you trade a Scarlett Johanssen in her prime for Miley Cyrus and Ellen Page?

I think not people. Give your collective heads a shake.

    The one on your shoulders.

    ReplyDelete
  114. With regards to Pitkanen:

    1. Before being traded from Philly, he remarked he would like to play in a warm climate city.

    2. Pitkanen probably didn't want to stay in Edmonton long-term unless he'd get a fat contract akin to Souray.

    3. Graham Hicks reported Pitkanen spent his entire time in Edmonton at Sutton hotel.

    4. Ethan Moreau was quoted in a post-trade interview that "Pitkanen was a talented player, but not a good fit for the team."

I suppose if you're not banging puck-bunnies at Hudson's, you don't qualify as being a good teammate.

The far bigger issue is Kevin Lowe's dumb trade. Trading an RFA for a pending UFA (Cole), when you clearly don't have enough cap space to keep the said player around because you killed your flexibilty by giving length contracts at premium dollars to depth players (Moreau, Staios, Pisani, etc.)

    Good riddance, Kevin Lowe.

    ReplyDelete
  115. I'd also throw Brule at TO for very little. Seems like a guy they could use. Better than Joey Crabb. And he's still young enough to fit in with TO's pseudo-re-rebuild.

I might waive Foster if I couldn't find a trade partner and somebody would claim him. He hasn't fit here at all. I think we can do better in the UFA market if we throw the money he's making and more at someone else.

I'd hope to deal Wanderandveer too, but if it doesn't happen, he's a UFA.

I'm okay with keeping Jones to sign him. I have no faith in Oiler management, but even I think they know his goals are largely an unsustainable fluke, and that he's a career 4th liner, and they won't overpay him.

I might deal Penner but only because I suspect the guy will leave and never sign here. I really do think a Penner, Cogs, Smid package could buy a lot.

    ReplyDelete

    http://kings.nhl.com/club/page.htm?bcid=20801

It would seem Lombardi is much more comfortable being a seller than a buyer (or playing around with small mice). On the buyers side he has brought in Smyth, Halpern and Williams. Only with Halpern did he give up much (Purcell and a 3rd).

Frankly, I don't think he has the mentality to do Hemsky for Schenn +.

If I am Tambo I start reminding folks that since '67 the Kings have made it past the second round ONCE in their history and that Dithering Dean doesn't seem that interested in making it twice.

  124. The Oilers can't deal Hemsky without getting that team's best prospect as part of the package. No Schenn should mean no deal.

I have to say I think Vic's right - why would these two players re-sign with this management? If you're counting on their good graces, you have to pray that 4 and 14 keep trending up at a serious rate. That is possible.

    ReplyDelete
  125. One thing we won't know is do they want to resign, or has the team asked them.

It would be a crying shame if they didn't ask.

    ReplyDelete
  126. One thought I keep coming back to about the Oilers and the trade deadline is actually what they'll need to do this summer. If Edmonton sells one or both of 27/83 for prospects, no matter how good, the roster next year is going to be paper thin. If they keep their two trading chips, it will still be pretty thin but not quite so much.

You know what, here's Showerhead's Oiler related cynicism point #3. I was going to go on about when they'll start spending money on veteran rentals and "real NHL players" to fill out the roster a little bit but fuck it - a waste of time to even start talking about that kind of action.

    Humbug.

    ReplyDelete
  127. Ducey - Lombardi was also the Sharks GM from 1996-2003. You might want to check him out there.

He is a build-from-within kind of fellow. His methods should not require the blockbuster.

He has essentially done what the Oilers are now trying to do - twice.

    ReplyDelete
  128. Let's see - crap teams in 2007, 2008 2009 2010 and right now it's 2011.

    Vic,

    First, you're not that nice

Second, there is no "senario". Based on his history with the Kings I think Lombardi covets his draft picks and is loath to part with them. He is not the kind of GM that goes for it.

I made no mention of Tambo or Lowe, other than what I might do, if I were Tambo.

I am not going to comment further on your comprehension skills, because LT is nice.

In fact, I think Lombardi is a very good GM and would love to have him here for the rebuild. But at some point, people here would become critical of him for not pulling the trigger- and possibly, even look longingly at K. Lowe circa 2005-2006.

Schenn must be one helluva prospect then, if Mad Mike thinks he's worth hanging onto. Considering that Milbury didn't think all of Luongo, Jokinen, Chara, Spezza (consensus 2nd overall pick), Bertuzzi, McCabe et al were worth hanging onto.

I think Mike Milbury is uniquely qualified to be employed by various media outlets as an expert on hockey. That tells me that the main stream media is often in touch with events and knowledgeable about all things hockey.

  139. Further to my point regarding Jaden Schwartz (if anyone even care...): a couple years back, I think I was involved in a discussion regarding some NCAA prospects. So for kicks, I ripped some data from hockeydb.com between the 1990/91 and 2006/07 seasons. I haven't updated it since then so it's missing several of the most recent years. Anyway, I just took a look at it and lo and behold, Schwartz has one of the highest points per game (1.55) in his age group (players who started the season at 18 or younger) in my database. It's pretty heady company:

    PPG Player
    2.56 Paul Kariya
    1.63 Ryan Hughes
    1.56 Zach Parise
    1.55 Brian Gionta
    1.55 Martin St. Louis
    1.55 Jaden Schwartz
    1.47 Dany Heatley
    1.45 Mike Cammalleri
    1.41 Eric Perrin
    1.38 Hugh Jessiman
    1.38 Thomas Vanek
    1.35 Jonathan Toews
    1.32 Marty Reasoner
    1.31 Phil Kessel
    1.29 Patrick Eaves
    1.27 Mike York
    1.26 Brendan Morrison

What's more, Schwartz's PPG towers above every player on his team, so it's not like he's riding on the coattails of older teammates. The caveat is that he's only played 20 games due to injuries.

Based on this, he may be a player worth targeting should we ever deal with STL in the future.

    ReplyDelete

Schenn is scoring 2.2 points per game at Saskatoon.

Saskatoon is a heck of a team... but still, off the top of my head, I can't recall anyone scoring at this kind of rate in the WHL for years. That's a monstrous pace...

    ReplyDelete
  144. Hunter, don't you think Shremp has done enough to prove he is a bust?

I imagine something similar was being discussed in Garth Snow's office yesterday.

    ReplyDelete
  145. I believe it was Matheson who declared that there was an offer on the table for Robbie Schremp at the 2009 draft - 2nd or 3rd round pick.

    ReplyDelete
  146. CSimpson,

Disagree with this Kariya kid, way too small to play centre in the NHL. (bookie thingy)

My compulsion to look up everything reminds me that the Oil actually did well with their first pick (7) in that 93 draft. Jason Arnott wasn't half bad. He would go first overall this year going away.

The final tragedy of that draft from the Oiler perspecitve was the last piece of the Gretzky trade; LA's 16th overall pick blown on defenceman Nick Stajduhar. Saku Koivu went 5 picks later at 21 and then Todd Bertuzzi at 23.

Problem is, you could probably do a sob story on every draft for the next 20 years if you looked hard enough.

    Yes, I have ADD.

  149. Since it is unlikely that Tambalownie makes any significant moves before the deadline, maybe we could skip ahead to the endless debate over Couturier/Larsson/RNH/Landeskog/yada/yada/yada, or jump way ahead to the annual debate about keeping that eventual pick in the NHL or sending them back to juniors.

Maybe we should start discussing next year's draft eligibles, since playoffs have turned into an imaginary TV world in the last few years. The Stanley Cup Playoffs might as well be another season of Dexter as far as local Edmonton reality is concerned.

I have gone through all the lates seasons of Dexter, Sons of Anarchy and Justified. Have started on Spartacus, Blood and Sand but can't watch with the kids around because of all the soft core porn involved. May as well start on Breaking Bad.

My God, what a random stream-of-consciousness/drivel post going nowhere. Maybe the Groundhog Day existence of being an Oiler fan has pushed me too far...

    Hodgson, Raymond, Oresovich

Raymond demoted and Glass promoted this game due to Raymond sucking.

  162. As per his wiki page:

Although there were serious questions about Stajduhar's attitude and its effect on his career, especially during his time in the ECHL, other factors also came into play. Although Stajduhar was a physical, offense-minded defenceman during his junior years (with the OHL's London Knights), his play went into a sharp decline following an off-season incident in Sydney, Nova Scotia outside a nightclub, during Stajduhar's spell with the Cape Breton Oilers. Stajduhar was sucker-punched in the back of the head, an injury that left him concussed and delayed his start the following season.

  166. The wiki is slightly off...

Nick Stadjuhar was hit in the head with a beer bottle outside of Barry T's (not sure what it is called now but definitely not Cape Breton) and it fractured his skull. I believe this happened right during training camp.

The 90's were a different time.

  167. Sum,

    Agreed.

I still say that Lucic is a product of who he plays with.

    Last year's main line mates:

    13.02% EV 37 BERGERON,PATRICE - 17 LUCIC,MILAN - 28 RECCHI,MARK
    12.66% EV 17 LUCIC,MILAN - 81 SATAN,MIROSLAV - 60 SOBOTKA,VLADIMIR
    8.67% EV 27 BEGIN,STEVE - 61 BITZ,BYRON - 17 LUCIC,MILAN
    8.63% EV 17 LUCIC,MILAN - 81 SATAN,MIROSLAV - 91 SAVARD,MARC
    8.31% EV 46 KREJCI,DAVID - 17 LUCIC,MILAN - 26 WHEELER,BLAKE
    8.2% EV 17 LUCIC,MILAN - 91 SAVARD,MARC - 16 STURM,MARCO
    7.47% EV 27 BEGIN,STEVE - 17 LUCIC,MILAN - 22 THORNTON,SHAWN

    This year's main line mates:

    51.75% EV 18 HORTON,NATHAN - 46 KREJCI,DAVID - 17 LUCIC,MILAN
    12.23% EV 37 BERGERON,PATRICE - 18 HORTON,NATHAN - 17 LUCIC,MILAN
    10.89% EV 18 HORTON,NATHAN - 17 LUCIC,MILAN - 91 SAVARD,MARC
    4.79% EV 46 KREJCI,DAVID - 17 LUCIC,MILAN - 19 SEGUIN,TYLER

He is a great player for the large body hands type guy. A perfect compliment to 2 skilled guys, but doesn't create on his own.

I like the player for what he is, but still think he's overpaid.

Mind you, 27 goals is 27 goals, even if 5 are empty net goals.

He's currently 2nd in the NHL (players with at least 10 goals) in Shooting percentage with 20.8%.

  168. I've heard Dennis on the radio before. He sounds kind of like a liqoured up leprechaun :)

  169. Matheson's Hockey World is up.

    Of note:

The Predators think defenceman Jonathon Blum is a top-four guy in the Dan Hamhuis mould, a worthy partner for dynamo puck-mover Ryan Ellis when he’s ready to make the club, which is why the Oilers never had a chance of getting him in a trade.

He also says the Stars nearly grabbed Stortini but the timing was wrong.

He recommends Hemsky and Petry to ATL for Bogo.

He also comments on the troubles LA is facing now, having lost both Sturm and Loktionov.

  170. Matheson also had this great historical stats bit:

There is a big push to get Clare Drake on the short list of builder nominees for this year’s Hockey Hall of Fame inductions, with testimonials from 33 people —including Mike Babcock, Ken Dryden, Glenn Anderson, Bob Nicholson, Dave King, Tom Renney, Kevin Lowe, Bob Nicholson, Dave Andrews, Perry Pearn, writers, judges, orthopedic surgeons, former Member of Parliament Wilton Littlechild —and rightfully so. He’s the quietest legend in Canadian hockey. Nobody touched more lives, players and especially other coaches than coach Drake, now 82.

Drake, as my good friend Cam Cole so astutely said, “recruited a University of Alberta computing science student named John Demco (he later developed the dot.ca domain on the Internet) in the early 1970s to design a program that would record hits, faceoffs, turnovers and shots and the place on the ice where they occurred and to produce a printout at the end of each period that charted those statistics. I don’t believe that was being done anywhere else.”

  171. I dont wanna trade them just cause but i think either hemmer or pens have to go so mps can play with some half decent players for a legitimate amount of time
Shenn and a first would be a nice return (throw in gags to get a d prospect too maybe)

  172. @WG

Looks like you forgot Kesler. I think Glass was further down the lineup somewhere. I wish the Oilers had a lineup so good you could forget about a Kesler.

  173. I've posted here maybe 5 times at the most since 2007. I lived on Whyte Ave during the '06 run.

I'm now living in Toronto with my brother, a hardcore Leafs fan. It sucks and as a female, I really don't have any friends that are hockey fans, let alone Oiler fans in this city.

So where are you Oiler fans in Toronto and when can we all go catch a game somewhere?

  174. "He recommends Hemsky and Petry to ATL for Bogo"

Really. REALLY bad idea. Silly enough with Hemsky straight up but throw Petry in as well?

  175. Dan Tencer had tweeted that there was a deal on the table; Smid for Blum.

    Who has it wrong?

  176. Good to hear someone is stumping for Clare Drake to get into the Hall of Fame.

It would be even better if someone with some pull got off their ass and did the same for Bill Hunter, NHL dinosaurs who are still bitter about the existence of the WHA and its long-term effects on the economic side of the game be-damned.

  177. NO ways Hemsky + Petry for Bogo
Gagner + Petry fr bogo sounds better

  178. Nice work right there on the Blum rumours by Matheson.

Even when he's wrong he's right!!

I was in Toronto for their game in December. Where did we flock to, after the Oilers impressive 5-0 win?

    Wayne Gretzky's restaurant, of course.
