Oilers at Kings, G 33 '10-'11

This is Juha Widing, maybe 1971. Los Angeles had a couple of pretty nice expansion seasons early in their history, mostly because they were smart enough to buy an entire AHL team (Springfield Indians, which brought them Bill White and some other quality players) and they traded for some very nice items at the Habs store (Rogie Vachon, Ralph Backstrom).

In the olden days, the Kings didn't draft a lot because the Habs store took draft picks in trade for the Vachons and Backstroms. Even players LA drafted who were any good at all, like Dale Hoganson, ended up being traded to Montreal for the stream of veterans.

Widing himself came to LA courtesy the Rangers (via Brandon and Finland and Sweden. He was born to Swedish parents in Finland). By the way, his name was  pronounced "Yoo-ha Vee-ding" and the junior boys beat hell out of him because he was a "soft Euro." Manitoba would see the same kind of shenanigans years later when Ulf Nilsson and Anders Hedberg were beaten up nightly in the WHA. Those Europeans (Salming too) took a lot of crap and abuse over the years because of the silly notion they weren't tough enough. That's why I cringe when Don Cherry starts talking about soft Europeans. I think they've bled enough for Canada, Don.
--

I have to admit it, this is a fun team to watch. I look forward to every game and the layoff last week was an eternity  (although I did get some shopping done). Hall is magic, Eberle is music. Gagner is Samwise and Peckham is 1970. What a bunch!
--

They gave the goal to Whitney the other night. Penner--being the good teammate he is--claimed not to have touched it although I do believe it was tipped by someone. This has happened before in NHL history. In Derek Sanderson's book "I've Got to be Me" he tells the story of giving up a goal so that his linemate Eddie Shack could reach a performance bonus. Good times.
--

The fact that the Oilers called no one up for the blue is another tell in a telling season. The current Oilers are like one of the garbage barges NYC sent out to sea years ago: a ship without a home and no help is coming. The plan is the lottery and more bullets for MBS. I'm okay with it, but do think that part of teaching these kids probably should involve a good PP and PK. The PP has all kinds of raw material, but the PK lags behind in terms of personnel.
--

We should start to think about who is going at the deadline. Thoughts?

  1. It is odd that no-one was called up from the farm, but then again management does seem determined to avoid the Chorney-mistake, so I guess we can't complain in that regard. Depends what your view on "what's best for the kids" is.

In terms of the PK issue, I would really love to bring back Reasoner. Great dressing room guy, good PKer and good FO guy - never appreciated enough whilst he was here, sorely missed now he's gone. And he was someone who loved EDM.

  2. At least one of Cogliano or Brule are certain to go. The return isn't going to be much help though. I imagine something like Mark Stuart from Boston. They might be tempted by Brule's "upside" for grit and scoring from the wing.

Jim Vandermeer too if he plays enough healthy and effective games between then and now. Petry is the callup for the remainder of the season if that happens. The only reason for him over Plante will be that he's older, has less "seasoning" time remaining before UFA, and the playoffs will be a distant speck on the horizon by then.

    ---

On an unrelated note, following the hapless Islanders makes me miss Roloson. God I wish we had him over Khabibulin.

  3. I hate typing it, but doesn't the guy to go at the deadline have to be Hemsky if there's a good deal available?

No reason to force anything at the deadline of course, but waiting for the summer involves crossing our fingers and hoping he stays healthy the rest of the season.

I'd miss watching him here and would root for him wherever he goes, but I'm just not sure there's room for a pricey injury-prone player in this team's future.

  4. Juha Widing's last pro season:

    77-78 Edmonton Oilers WHA

  5. Whenever I looked at Borje Salming's face I knew that the Euro "soft" schtick was BS. While I was never a Leaf fan, I used to love watching that guy skate.

Back in the early 80's I saw Jan Ludvig, one of the early Czech imports, play for Kamloops and the opposition WHA team ran that poor bugger all night long. He gave as good as he got, though, and still racked up the points. He ended up playing for the Devils.

Not recalling a defenseman from Oklahoma might be just a subtle way of keeping a govenor on the kiddie-Oil. I think a lottery pick is obviously in the master plan.

  6. Well our pp might have all kinds of raw potential jbut it sucks too.
I was a little unhappy that no one was called up from the farm on the d side of things. Anyone would have been an upgrade over 43.

    ReplyDelete
  7. The Kamloops opponent was WHL not WHA, of course.

I hope to God they don't trade Hemsky, but I can see the logic behind that move. Of Penner/Hemsky, Hemsky seems the more likely to re-sign here, but Penner is the safer bet to pursue for health reasons. Penner would fetch a good return at the deadline, but he is about the only productive, durable forward that has kept his head above water in the last couple of dismal seasons. While Cogliano and Brule are current whipping boys, which contending team would pay anything worthwhile for them?

I think they may stand mostly pat at deadline...good thing that Calgary chose to defer that second round pick for Staios, this draft it will be a much better selection.

  8. Aloe all this soft euro nonsense needs to stop. Now there are a lot of tough euros in the game. They may not fight, but they do other stuff very well like battling in the corners, taking hits to make the plays etc. And it's not like we done have soft Canadian players.
This is one of the reasons I am looking for wars to a player like landeskog and nino in the league! Those players will break the euro stereotype.

    ReplyDelete
  9. And by 2nd round, I of course meant third round...but it will be high enough that it will almost be second round.

  10. Well the Oiler managed to win the 5v5 SC battle against SJS without 10 and 83. They won it 19-12.

    That is amazing.

Even though SJS didn't look particularly engaged in the fight, its still something to behold.

Of course they got killed on SC on special teams 0-9, which ended up being the difference in the game.

Special teams are key to winning in the NHL, who knew?

I expect them to lose tonight and also lose the SC battle, but you cannot count these guys out.

Quick is expected to start, and he's hotter than a $2 pistol with a gaudy .929 SV%, good for 3rd in the NHL.

Dubnyk is expected to start and his .915 is no slouch (good for a tie for 15th in NHL)

The Oiler generally have trouble with teams that have big physical forwards with skill and LA has lots of those. They lack the D and C who can break the cycle.

Mind you, they did well against SJS, but the Sharks' "give-a-shit" meter seemed pretty low.

Hope they win, expect they won't.

    Go Oilers!!

    *clap,clap*

  11. Expiring contracts are the currency of the deadline. Ryan Jones and Jim Vandermeer are likely heading away for picks.

2nd or 3rd rounders is my guess. Which I would be fine with.

    ReplyDelete
  12. Totally agree with the fun factor being back in play for Oiler games. A welcome relief after a couple of years of unwatchable hockey.

    Players moved at the deadline:
    Vandermeer
    Foster
    Cogliano
    Jacques

I believe one of Hemsky or Penner gets moved at the draft.

    ReplyDelete
  13. @ Woodguy
Another thing that is in Quick's favor is that his sv% looks sustainable over the other two guys who are ahead of him. If I am not wrong, Miller hovered around that number the entire last season.

    ReplyDelete
  14. LA has a strong defense. With Doughty, Scuderi, and Greene that is a lot of good defensemen. Thought that D looks much better with Mitchell than without it, it still is more solid than what half the teams put up. Couple that with their defensive coach and a the presence of players like Handzus and Stoll, LA is a team against whom Oilers are bound to have scoring issues.

    ReplyDelete
  15. Lou Loophole is officially the worst guy ever. Fires John MacLean 2 days before Christmas. Couldn't wait 2 more days Lou and put the bullet in him on Christmas morning? Jacques Lemaire back behind the bench on an interim basis. I guess that's what you call "boring last place hockey."

    ReplyDelete
  16. - the deadline should be a helluva lot of fun because there are a couple of guys now who have made it clear they have no spot here going forward - 13 and 67 up front - and then there's a guy like 16 signed for one more affordable year who also has a Cup ring!!!

Plus, 26 was good offensively before he got here;) and he's got another year left on an affordable pact. 28 could be a rental if the counting numbers stay shiny but I think the Oilers might take a look at keeping 2 around so they can sign him to an affordable deal for 2011 and third pairing duty.

And maybe even 43 will get dealt to a playoff team looking for an 8th dman; so there could be a tonne of new players or picks to look forward to.

Possible upheaval on the blue will lead to the promotions of Petry or Plante or maybe even the older and seemingly improved Chorney while the two kids finish the year in the A.

I'm not sure what to make of the decision not to call up someone from the A for the D because even if you want more seasoning for Petry, you should still call up Belle just to have an extra body. To leave yourself short on purpose in that regard looks like you're trying to save money more than anything else; on a much smaller scale it looks like the stuff Wang's pulling.

The latest from today is Renney in the papers trying to talk himself into playing DD after all but promising it the other day. The kid's looked really good in goal and we're not making the playoffs so I wish Renney would stop fucking around and play him enough to see what we have.

He may be good enough that we could get rid of Khabby this summer and still make the playoffs next year if we get a good vet to pair with the kid.

    ReplyDelete
  17. I'd agree with JB. Any "hockey" trades usually happen at the draft, but I wouldn't bet on TamboLowe getting off their asses and making a decision.
    - Cogs for a bigger tweener
    - Maybe Smid for a bottom sixer, but I doubt it.

The dumps for late draft picks at the deadline:
    - Vandy for a 4th
    - Jones for a 3rd

LT has been predicting a "hockey" trade since Summer 06 so there's not much point in talking about trades until Tambolowe is done evaluating.

Penner and Hemsky will be here until the 2012 deadline just in case the Oilers are competing for a playoff spot. It's the Oilers way: Wait until the last possible minute to see how many points you're out of the playoffs then decide what to do.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Watched "Yoo-haw" back in Junior. Can still see him splitting the D and making the tender look silly. He was magic. He was big but nobody got a real good lick on him because he had moves.
I hope ST is shopping Khabi on a daily basis. Put DD in and let him play half the games. This is not a playoff team in spite of Renney's smokescreen.
    Lou is a prick.

    ReplyDelete
  19. that's the one I was wondering about, could a team like tampa or chi be desperate enough to take khabby off the oilers hands? too much to hope for?

  20. To leave yourself short on purpose in that regard looks like you're trying to save money more than anything else; on a much smaller scale it looks like the stuff Wang's pulling.

    Gross.

  21. Going to the game tonight and excited to see the kids in person for the first time.

I was there for Dubnyk's 50+ save performance at the end of last year, so I'm hoping it's something in the smog that agrees with him.

Jones and Vandermeer seem like the obvious deadline deals. I'd toss Gerber into that conversation as well, as some team will likely be looking for cheap goaltending depth. Does someone take a flyer on JDD?

I think one of Hemsky or Penner and Brule or Cogliano are draft day deals. Does Tambo revisit things with Boston for their Leafs pick?

    ReplyDelete
  22. Was wondering the same Dennis.

Has Batman gone cheap this year? How much did he supposedly lose whilst spending to the cap?

    - 13M under the cap
    - Very few call-ups
    - Horc and Hemsky not placed on LTIR
    - Cancelled Xmas bonuses and gave out Jelly of the month memberships

I guess Big Sexy and his $$ in the minors counters this point.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Mitchell and Greene are out right now for the Kings but if they get healthy at the same time and round out Doughty-Johnson-Scuderi then that's a very good top five and then there's a bunch of guys that can round out like the Drewiske, Harrold and Martinez kid.

The Kings have a lot of talent right now but I still don't see them beating the Wings or Dys.

    ReplyDelete
  24. LT, off topic, but you're #1 on Google for "Hind Banana" lol... It was the post you wrote about Tambo. :P

Yeah, refusing to call up Belle looks like penny-pinching at best and other worse possibilities exist. Either way, there certainly seems to be a disconnect between Renney and Tambo.

    ReplyDelete
  25. They gave the goal to Whitney the other night.

This season is now meaningless to me.

    ReplyDelete
  26. I am sure they would trade:

    JFJ
    Brule
    Cogs
    Fraser
    Bulin
    Foster
    Wandermeer

But they will get nothing for Fraser, Brule or JFJ so will hang onto them. Cogs is worth little and it is better just to hang on to him and see if the light turns on at some point.

Bulin might interest a team but his contract will be the issue. I could see him moving if the Oilers take salary back.

Foster and JVM are the most likely prospects for trade, they might be worth a third rounder each.

I have been fine with Strudwick playing the last three. He is +3 and has looked ok.

The NYI won last night. They play the NJD tonight. Lets hope for a three point game.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Yeah, the Kings look like a team that should be buying one or two players to put them over the top.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Is there any chance they don't want to disrupt things in OKC if they don't have to? After all, a successful season for the Oilers is a top 5 pick, a successful season for the Barons is actually getting those kids some playoff experience.

    Maybe?

    ReplyDelete
  29. Oh, and how can we forget "Lemaire vs Kovalchuk".

Whats the over/under on the number of games before Kovy starts to chafe in his new straight jacket?

My money is on Hemsky announcing he has a sports hernia in two weeks. They always start out as "groin pulls". He will be on the shelf with surgery until next season.

    ReplyDelete
  30. The Oilers can probably field a competitive team next year, especially with Penner and Hemsky lined up. So why bother ditching Hemsky or Penner? Both are on value contract anyway... Plus, with 15 guys under contract and 18 millions under the cap (per cap geek) they can overpay for short term defensive help à la Hamrlik and get to the playoffs.

Add to this the fact that Loophole Lou looks like he's angling for a fire sale...

Plus, seriously, Cogliano and Brule? These guys can't be trusted on the ice without Penner why would anyone want them? Vandermeer? Really?

I guess, as LT often said, getting more bullets for MBS is always a good option but those guys won't exactly draw 2nd round picks...

I think any significant movment will be done before the end of january. If you have the cap space and the incentive to improve, getting more games out of your acquisition is pretty important and so the early seller will get the prize.

    ReplyDelete
  31. I'm with Olivier on this one. The Oilers have very very little of value.

Vandermeer would probably bring a low round pick from someone wanting depth for the spring.

Fraser, Foster and Brule are all pretty shitty and they all have one year left on their current deals so they would be of no interest to anyone looking for a rental. Teams are looking for decent players who will be off the books come June, not terrible players who will be hanging around.

Khabibulin is the guy they should beat the drum on but two years left on that deal .. not going to happen. Chicago has Crawford who is 12-2-1 in his last fifteen and I can't see Yzerman spending big bucks on a goalie based on his work so far and the school of management he is from.

So yeah. That's it. Very little going on I presume.

    ReplyDelete
  32. One of the main developments this season has been the emergence of 4-89-14. Since they have been put together, they have been bad at all! Once 10 and 83 are back, then a PVP line of those two with penner will be a very viable option. giving us two solid lines which can do damage. Then all we need to do is find suitable 3rd line center to play with the swedes! Getting rid of brule and cogs will be important in order to have a solid top 9 and a 4th line capable of killing penalties.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Vandermeer would probably bring a low round pick from someone wanting depth for the spring.

    A very, very, low pick.

I would have lost Brule and Cogliano a long time ago so I have my doubts that they get moved. Why would anyone want them?

Heck, I can't really see anyone being moved. There's no need to trade Whitney or Gilbert because you're unlikely to win the trade.
There's no underachieving multi-year contracts on the blueline that need to be ditched. There's no upcoming contract problems (that we know of).

Fraser is the only guy that may have some perceived value (not sure why) that could be tradeable. Maybe he goes for a pick.

Tambellini hasn't found any suckers as of yet. It's not likely he finds one now.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Anybody think that maybe we should be asking what the Islanders want for Tavares. Our first round pick and who? to get a centre. The Islanders are going nowhere fast and Tavares is looking like he might want a new home.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Petterik Nookelainen's been traded about 4 times for 6th pick, surely we can snap that Cogs or Brule.

I mean we got Aaron Jonhson and a 3rd for STEVE STAIOS!

Chris Peluso got traded for a 6th.

    Macarthur for a 3rd and a 4th...

    Andy Sutton for a 2nd.

Hell even Jody Shelley got traded for a 6th, guess we could snap something for Macintyre.

So yeah, we don't really have value but that doesn't seem to bother GM's on trade day.

    ReplyDelete
  36. If Staios is worth a third then Vandermeer should be worth at least that.

Staios sported a -11.7 Rel Corsi last year and had a year left at $2.7 million.

Vandermeer is younger, has a +8.1 Rel Corsi and has just whats left on his $2.3 million dollar contract.

Hopefully his ankle recovers quickly and Sutter feels the need to load up on dMen for a push for 9th place.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Ducey: Don't think teams pop out REL Corsi to check a player's worth tough,

  38. @ jon k are you serious everytime I see a scrum in front of the oilers net with time winding down and Khabi does not lose his stick it makes me happy roli isn't here anymore. God that guy had greasy hands

    ReplyDelete
  39. I'm still impressed with the Staios trade. Proabaly Tambo's best return at the trade table. It's on a long list of D. Sutter's questionable moves.

Vet D-men often fetch more than they're worth on D-day.

If Vandermeer is playing close to his same level of play before injury I'd wager he could get Stu a late 3rd.

    ReplyDelete
  40. My expectation is that the oilers pick up an enabling contract - one that some other team that is expected to challange wants to get rid of - with a nice sweetener attached. Another bullet with Cogliano/Brule/JFJ/Fraser/Stortini/Vandermeer as part of the deal going the other way....

    ReplyDelete
  41. Toonces is kind of a dick. When it came to guys like Hall they said they wouldn't send them down if they forced the issue. That's fine, but this whole team is forcing the issue that they can be competitive this year and management is basically saying. "Nope sorry don't care."

Just a shitty message to send to the team.

    Toonces is histories greatest monster.

  42. Saw this line in the Sun today about Whitney's goal:

"Then, the next day, after some lobbying from the Oilers PR staff, the goal was given back to Whitney."

    What a crock of shit.

I really doubt that Whitney's ego is so fucking fragile that he needs PR flaks working over the NHL to get him his goal.

Bush league, just like the PR flaks making sure that the Oilers mysteriously got the 12th shot in a previous game so they wouldn't tie a team record for futility.

    I blame LaForge.

    ReplyDelete
  43. BD, Olivier

I agree and I suspect that is also the reason there is no good defensive center on the team despite the obvious need. Teams do not generally give up useful players without getting a useful player, or picks prospects that reasonably project to be useful players back.

The guys that are surplus to requirements on the Oilers would not be particularly useful to other teams, so I suspect those teams are asking for guys like Lander and Petry and/or high picks when the Oilers call looking for a center.

It makes zero sense for this team to be giving up decent prospects/high picks at this stage and I'm glad they're not doing it.

    ReplyDelete

    Sumoil,

Couldn't agree more and was thinking about posting about it before I saw your post.

    27-10-83
    4-89-14
    91-NOT 13-23
    LW VET-LANDER OR VET-46

That is a pretty decent forward grouping.

The whole "4th line needs to be your energy line" (read: can't play hockey) is bullshit

That all grew from when the league quickly went from 21 team to 30 teams.

That added another 200 players to the NHL player pool. That's damn near 7 players per team who wouldn't make the NHL in the 21 team league.

Teams haven't had a choice and have had to have "energy guys" on the 4th because the pool of hockey players was empty.

The Oiler are deep in skill and need to run 3 skill lines, especially if two of them can take on toughs and 2nd toughs.

Your 4th line can take on tougher assignments too (I know Zorg has it in him with the right C and LW) and two of them are your 1st set of PK forwards.

The Oilers need to do this and throw the whole 2 skill lines, 1 checking line, 1 energy line out the window. Its bullshit anyway.

    ReplyDelete
  45. @Smarmy, yeah it's pretty clear that Toonces is holding the pillow over Renney.

Toonces has been focused on acquiring a high draft pick and his actions haven't wavered. Wasted roster spots (43-22-33-JDD), lack of call ups during injuries... couple that with the cap space and it fits together neatly.

Renney on the other hand seems to be trying to win in spite of this though he obviously is hand cuffed by options.

In the 'now,' I hate the idea of tanking because it sucks watching the Oilers lose, but maybe I'll feel better if we get our lotto pick for MBS.

    ReplyDelete
  46. @ woodguy
Exactly. A defensively responsible 3rd line center and then that's the only line which needs sheltering. You are absolutely right with the energy line thing. Reddox with penalty killing center and zorg as the fourth line is pretty sweet considering we will have horcoff for pk and hopefully the third line c as well. We should look for guys like belanger and nichol inthe off season. Handzus at the right price wouldn't look too bad as the 3rd line center either.
I think all three of them are ufa at the end of the season

    ReplyDelete
  47. Marc - absolutely agree

There's a super list of kids right now. We know that a lot of these guys unfortunately won't pan out for some reason or another.

For me unless they can get a surefire piece of the puzzle for the future then they need to hold onto their kids AND guys like Penner and Hemsky unless it becomes clear the latter two either do not want to be here or price themselves off of the club with their demands.

You can never have enough good players and the idea that Penner might be surplus because of the coming kids on LW doesn't make sense to me.

Now if they turn the corner and three years down the road they can make a run and it might cost them a prospect we like well then that is a different story.

But right now hold onto the those guys who may have a future unless the return is a beauty that will also help in the future.

    ReplyDelete
  48. Would think trade deadline will be a tell for the org. If either of 27 or 83 get sent away, it's only being done because they don't feel they can be signed at reasonable numbers moving forward.

In that case, you HAVE to trade rather than allow them to walk for nothing at the end of the contract.

Also, you have to trade because if you allow them to get to the last year of their contract, trade value may not be as high, but I could be wrong.

But I also agree w/Sumoil and Woodguy, would love it if they kept those two, but would rather see 10 back w/ 4 & 14 and 27/83 with 89 and then find that elusive #3C who can also kill penalties to stick between 91 and 28. The send out 67 and 13 for complimentary puck bags and bring up Ginger for the PK.

    In a perfect world.

    ReplyDelete
  49. I'm wondering if TBay wouldn’t take Khabbi off our hands. If they are seriously thinking of signing nabokov, they would probably take Khabbi no? I know people here have hated him since his arrival, but he is a good goalie playing well right now and we might get something for him

    ReplyDelete
  50. Sumoil,

If v3.0 (or will be 4.0 in the summer?) signs Handzus I will forgive him of many things.

He would look great at 3C here.

Given the contract situations they can afford to overpay for 2 years to get him.

He's making 4.0MM right now with a NTC

At 33 years old you'd expect his number to go down.

I wonder if he bites at 8MM over two years?

I don't think the Kings can afford that given what they have coming up.

    History is a long time.

As for the future, I think Tambi has good grasp of it. Consider:

The Oilers have played .453 hockey so far (granting them 2.5 wins for OT loses). To get 95 pts (what COL had last year in 8th) they would have to win the equivalent of 33 out of the remaining 50, or 66% of their games.

Plus the Oilers would have to climb over 7 other teams, any of which require a lower winning percentage in order to beat out the Oilers. LA (in 9th) for example just needs to go .560. You going to bet the Oilers play .660 hockey over LA playing .560?

Unless Tambi trades for Sidney Crosby and Chris Pronger, there will be no playoffs in River City.

  52. Best part of this site is this time of year; after spending the entire first half dumping on the whipping boys du jour, the illiterati believes said whipping boys can be dealt for high draft picks and why haven't the Oilers done so already?
For example, Jones was basically given to the Oilers, and he's hardly any better than a place-holder, so there's no reason to hold out any hopes for a draft pick for him. Same goes for Vandermeer, who's basically earning his buyout pay.
No one wants Jacques - I wouldn't trade a stick-sack for him. Or a shooter tutor.

One of the consequences of drafting the best player available (which I wholeheartedly agree with) is that you can end up with an unbalanced prospect pool. In Edmonton's case they are noticably short of high end D and centers who can score at the NHL level but have a lot of good wingers.

Ideally the prospects we have in the weaker positions are enough to fill out a competitive NHL team, but if they are not, then you have to look at trading the a winger to get depth in these position.

I'd love to keep Penner, but at the trade deadline the going rate for a bona fide top six forward has been a young roster player, a blue chip prospect and a first round pick. If LA offers for example, Trevor Lewis, Colton Teubert and a first for Penner that's awfully hard to turn down. We would fill some holes in our prospect pool and Stu would have two firsts, a second and two thirds to work with at the draft, and our play from our wings takes a hit in the short term, but probably not down the road, because there's a good chance Paajarvi or Hall can fill Penner's shoes more than adequately.

In any event it's a good problem to have. You can either go forward stacked on the wings, or you can trade one of those guys to shore up other weaknesses.

  54. I think 4 million is being more than generous and I doubt he would get that much money elsewhere. Sine we have loads of cap space, I wouldn't really be against offering all that money on the kind of guy we really need. Even with a horcoff injury at some point next season, handzus can move upto a top two center role.
Only thing is that many fans are pissed off with his hit on hemmer last season. But I am sure that shouldn't be a factor when it comes to making moves for the betterment of the team.
With horn out, our center depth is gagner, cogliano, o Marra and fraser. How this team is doing well is beyond me. This needs to be addressed soon enough and there can not be a better time than tambo 4.0

  57. Cogs or Brule for a centre from St. Loo. Probably Cogs.

I don't dislike Cogliano, I've given up being disappointed in him not scoring because, for whatever reason, that's obviously not his fate in the NHL.

In fact, I admire him for being willing to change his position and game completely at the request of management. He's done it without complaint - not a peep to the press and not a word has been said in the rumour mill that he's at all unhappy. The kid is willing to do what's asked of him and that's a lot more that can be said for a lot of people at times, myself included. If he's going to go, that will probably hurt him. He seems to be fighting with confidence issues and a trade is a risky way of dealing with that, from Andrew's perspective. He might land where he's needed, he might get crushed by the rejection.

Of the two, I think Brule is more likely to depart, and that also makes me a bit unhappy. He clearly has something - he plays big, he hits hard for his size. If only he'd learn to pass instead of take that predictable snap/slap shot coming down the wing every time, he'd probably have a good 5-6 more points right now. He still seems to want to be a first liner, a scoring winger, when he does that. He's adapted his game in many ways, but part of him seems to be fighting it. Not as consistent on the backcheck and he could be, though he's a solid forechecker.

  58. Maybe the fact we had to dump POS for another team's poor contract goes against my hunches but I still believe most of the guys listed could be moved at the deadline.

  61. I wouldn't expect any trades of consequence.

Tambellini likes to stand pat more than he likes mumbling. And there's a lot of parity so there are fewer motivated buyers and sellers. In season trades seem to be slowing down over the years of the cap era.

The fun thing will be to see what the Flames and the Leafs do. They have wild eyed GM's who both need to get something working. If I were Tambellini, I'd be talking to both, just on the principle that crazy idiots tend to make more mistakes under pressure.

Agree about not trading prospects/picks...we should just play hockey between now and Feb 15.If we're anywhere
near the pack maybe we bring in some help, otherwise, jettison what you can and play the kids the last 20 games.

I think Vandermeer has 2 things going for him-experienced defenceman and an expiring contract.Someone will give

  65. At the deadline:

Ryder, TOR 1st, & prospect for Hemsky...

    ...I keed, I keed.

I think the Braintrust's goal is to do their damnedest to keep 83 and 27. So it's likely to play out later rather than sooner.

Ideally a team short on scoring or wingers or having troubles comes knockin on the door for Cogs or Brule, but we can't be going around offering them if we are gonna maximize return.

Seems the planets have to align to make a decent trade these days. But it should be an interesting deadline this year. Lots of bubble teams and some of them were expected to be contenders.

  66. what does Chris Phillips have left in the tank? Oilers have liked him for years so he might be the guy they target.

I'm usually more of a lurker but do try to chime in from time to time.

If Vandermeer keeps playing with Whitney, then I could see him fetching a low pick.

Pump and dump is something I'm hoping to see in the next few months. Playing with Whitney or Penner seems to do good things to poor players, but one can hope not all GMs know that...

    ReplyDelete
  69. I think there could be a market for Vandermeer and Jones. This year is Vandermeer's last year on his contract (right?) and he has a reputation for being a tough, journeyman defender. Usually these can be traded for a draft pick.

As for Jones, if he keeps up with his scoring then I think he will have worth somewhere. Nashville put him on waivers because they didn't have room for him in the lineup, not because they thought he was useless.

If Staios can be traded for a pick, then certainly Vandermeer must be worth something considering he's younger and has less term on his contract.

The one I'm hoping for is Khabibulin. I know it goes against everything I just argued - Khabi has two more years after this and he's getting older but his cup resume must have cache somewhere.

Then go with a Dubnyk - Gerber tandem. Give Dubnyk games to develop with and an old veteran the opportunity to prove himself.

Otherwise, Fraser, Jacques probably doesn't have much value but I'd still be tempted to get rid of them and have O'marra and Reddox in their place.

    ReplyDelete
  70. I wouldn't advocate Toonces blowing up the future for the now, but having guys like Struds, and Jacques in the lineup is as close to not caring about winning as you can get without actually going down to the ice and knee capping players with a tire iron.

    ReplyDelete
  71. Yeah Marc nailed it. You trade from strength to address weakness.

The question is if you are moving 27 is they key to the deal a C or D?

I think you can get a better D prospect as they aren't as sexy.

I prefer Forbort to Teubert by a pretty big margin and would forgo the 1st to get him.

V3.0 needs to deal 13 and 67 for picks at the deadline. He tried to get a 1st for 13 at the draft but got no bites.

Picks are undervalued in Feb and over valued in June. The time to do it now - deadline.

A 2nd or 3rd for each would be reasonable. If you can get a 1st whistle past the graveyard.

    ReplyDelete
  72. Oh yeah Frobort over Teubert by a country mile.

    Teubert kind of sucks.

    ReplyDelete
  73. I'm not sure LA would give up Forbort. Teams don't tend to give up their best prospects and he's LA's top ranked D prospect.

Teubert seems like the kind of Angelo Esposito/Patrice Cormier type prospect that tend to get moved in this kind of deal.

Fraser, Cogs, Brule, Gags, Foster, Smid and Storts all need to go.

Need more Wrecksall reminders in the lineup.

Most importantly though we need more Strudwick in the lineup. The last thing we need is to trade assets to finish in the middle of the pack and draft another Pouliot.

    ReplyDelete
  77. I find it somewhat predictable that Traktor shows up with a Horcoff crack on Festivus evening.

    ReplyDelete
  78. Horcoff's so bad. Even when injured he hurts the team.

(Ironically he's been golden this year)

    Since Horcoff's injury,

    Eberle 4 goals in 5 games +2
    Hall 5 points in 5 games +3

    ReplyDelete
  81. Trak: Eberle and Hall continue to produce because they play with Gags. Now we're stuck with Cogliano as a 2nd C, that's the big difference.

    ReplyDelete
  82. FPB: Kurri, Tikkanen, Siltanen was a nice start and it's been a favorite ever since. Finns seems to be a fun bunch too, they are quite rowdy at the WJ's in Europe, etc.

I think most Oiler fans feel the same way about the Finns.

    ReplyDelete
  83. LT: Yeah. I get why lol. Tough wasn't Tikkanen dirty? I heard he had a filthy filthy mouth, and he was in TSN's top 10 most hated players of all time. Anyways.

Always found funny the disparity between how Finland was doing in terms of NHL players/Men's success, VS the WJC. They always seem to get stormed by the big boys (Can, USA, Russia etc,).

(That being said I don't know the score which could make me look like a fool)

    ReplyDelete
  84. FPB: Tikkanen may have had a filthy mouth but unless you were fluent in Tikkish you wouldn't know.

  86. (Sigh)

Yes, Horcoff is overpaid. But solid two way centers typically are overpaid. Supply versus demand. Is Malhotra overpaid? Some would say yes. But if you want a hardworking two-way center then thats what the market value tends to be. A 40-50 pt/yr two-way pk'ing center will cost more than a 40-50 pt one dimensional winger.

If we traded Horcoff, we would then be in the market for another center. Ideally someone who is hardworking, has a good two-way game, can penalty kill, veteran presence, good on faceoffs, etc. Sounds an awful fucking lot like Horcoff!!!

We need to fill some gaps on the roster skill set. We don't want to open up a gap by trading Horcoff. And then go looking for someone who looks, smells and plays like Horcoff.

Now, if you'll excuse me, I need to go argue with my brother in law about the same subject.

  89. I love the old stories about Tikkanen and his made up language on the ice. I think the story goes, Tik was chirping at a player on the other team all game and one of the Oiler players asked Kurri what he was saying. Since Kurri spoke Finnish it didn't seem unreasonable that he would know but Kurri said he didn't have a clue because he didn't understand Tik either. lol

    ReplyDelete
  90. I bet MacT could tell stories about Tikanen all day.

  92. "Yes, Horcoff is overpaid. But solid two way centers typically are overpaid. Supply versus demand. Is Malhotra overpaid? Some would say yes. But if you want a hardworking two-way center then thats what the market value tends to be."

3C's are often overpaid just like goalies are but the difference in impact is usually marginal.

Khabibulin at 3.7 or Anderson at 1.8?

Horcoff at 5.5 or Chris Kelly at 2.1?

Malhotra is also an elite player in his role whereas Horcoff is a handyman multibit. It's like comparing a pitching wedge to a 7-wood.

    A" 40-50 pt/yr two-way pk'ing center will cost more than a 40-50 pt one dimensional winger."

Yeah but a regular two-way pk'ing center normally doesn't lead the team in PP time (out of necessity).

"If we traded Horcoff, we would then be in the market for another center."

We are already in the market for another center. Lowe and Tambellini and the puppets Stauffer, Tencer ect have been talking about the need for a big top 6 center.

The only difference is we would have more cap space to acquire one or retain existing talents like the 6'4 Dustin Penner.

    Merry Christmas everyone.

I banged the drum for Hall, Gagner, and Eberle together all summer.

Gagner and Eberle are my small forwards. Hemsky is one too many. Hemsky is to singular/unique a player to build a team around, and he isn't exceptional enough (Orr, Gretzky, Lafleur) to try. Keep Penner. Try getting a solid centre or defenseman plus a pick for Hemsky.

  99. That's two decent road 1st periods in a row against good teams.

Nice clean face off loss by Gagner on the PP. Can we just refuse offensive zone face off and just start with puck behind our net that way we get an extra 5-6 second on PP.

    ReplyDelete
  113. That was a Moose goal there, except off the wrong wing.

    ReplyDelete
  114. ironic, that Halls 11th career goal, was 11's trademark.

    ReplyDelete
  115. PDO, I never bought that, really.

Someone linked a goalie reaction time vs. speed vs. distance from net page that detailed the ability of goalies to actually stop shots they see, as opposed to guess where they'd go. As long as the goalie isn't covering 100% of the net at that distance, with a shot as fast as Hall's (it was unbelievable, I barely saw the puck on the replay), there's a chance.

    ReplyDelete
  116. Biggest difference this year over last year: the young guys attack the opponent net at all times. They get the pick and think: lets go get a scoring chance.

That is such an incredible positive. All 3 of the rookies will only get better but they all share that very real instinct

    ReplyDelete
  117. John, 4 rookies :) Let's not forget Linus, who has great chemistry with Magnum.

I'll throw Ryan Jones into that list as well. He's not as skilled, but he showed speed in that first period where he blew by the defender on the left side boards, and he's always attacking the net.

    ReplyDelete
  118. Wojo:

How many feet further away is a shot from where Hall took that opposed to taking that same shot from the slot?

    ReplyDelete
  119. Speaking of 4 seasons without getting rid od rookie mistakes, 5's positioning lead directly to SJS's first goal Tues and also tonight.

I think you can trade 5 at the deadline too. He's stil 3rd pair and not improving. Lots of guys can play 3rd pair and he might fetch something decent.

    ReplyDelete
  120. When the Oilers got Bobby Smid and Zoolander for FCP, I was pissed that we dealt FCP for Anson Carter and Eric Brewer.

Little did I know Bobby was no where near as good as Brewer.

  121. Have not seen enough of Omark to know if he will become an elite offensive player. I have absolutely no doubt he could be a shootout specialist (if we can dress and play Smac 3 minutes why not a shootout expert). Re Jones, looks good tonight but think we have enough of a sample size to know Jones is not of that caliber.

Would you guys be prepared to trade Gagner if we could use him as the center piece of a trade to get us a 1C?

    ReplyDelete
  122. Wojo:

Those 12 feet make a big difference when you take into account how hard it is to score a clean shot on a goalie.

    ReplyDelete
  123. Bad break for 91.

He looks phenomenal any time he plays with anyone who can actually pay hockey.

    ReplyDelete
  124. PDO, I agree, but it's mostly angle when you're shooting from the dot as opposed to the slot. In terms of distance from the net (as opposed to distance from the slot), I think being where Hall was only added maybe 4-5 feet.

Quick had a chance on that goal, but only "my body is covering 90%+ of the net" chance. Not a "I have the chance to react to this and flash some leather" chance. IMHO.

Anyway, it's nice to see the Oilers swarming another team.

After years of watching us play the 5-man PK, it's exciting to see the team force someone else into that role.

    ReplyDelete
  125. Gagner is 21 and is a 2nd line centre at worst. Gilmour didn't break out till 23 or 24 as a small slow genius centre.

    ReplyDelete
  126. It took the Sedins till their mid-twenties to be first line players.

Yet people want to give up on a steadily improving Gagner at 21.

    ReplyDelete
  127. I love Omark's competitiveness in the corners and around the net.

    ReplyDelete
  128. This linesman stinks. He's missed multiple intended passes.

    ReplyDelete
  129. Omark sure looks comfortable below the icing line. It's a rare skill to be able to protect and control the puck while a D-man that out weighs you by 50lbs cross checks you in the back every few seconds

    ReplyDelete
  130. John,

It totally depends on the deal.

I'd have a hard time dealing Gagner. We knock him for size, but we forget that Kane and Crosby are hobbits too. I'm not saying Gags is like those players, but he's 21 and won't turn 22 for another 8 months. He has 4-6 years of development ahead of him, time during which most men bulk up and fill out.

It's a challenge for him to be the elite centre we want, but he is 30th in scoring among centres. He's played only a few games with Hall and Eberle, the line has been dynamite so far, and he's taking faceoffs better than Eric Staal (also has a better +/- - and after the Nightmare November we had, that's really saying a lot).

    ReplyDelete
  131. Godot

My comment is if the Magnificent Bastard believes Sean Couturier is the real deal and we do not draft first, I would have no difficulty with using Gagner as part of a package to get the first pick.

  132. Agreed on Gagners work on the boards - looks like its getting better. I wonder about his offensive creativity though. Seemed like he had much more of it in season 1.

  133. I hadn't paid attention to Omark while I was typing. That's encouraging.

Sounds like he has scrawny strength, a la Colby Armstrong or Glenn Anderson. Small but dense.

    ReplyDelete
  134. Yeah WG,

Smid's failure to step up this season is a big part of the Oilers' problems.

Maybe Tambellini thought Smid had more in him. He's still young-ish, but he looks like a career third pairing guy right now. (Of course, we need those guys too, but we need top 4 guys more.)

    ReplyDelete
  135. The key with Gagner is to sign him to the right deal. He's going to be a good player. (Already is pretty good.) But we might end up overpaying him.

That's why I argued that we should've locked him up long term this last offseason. Sign him to a deal that blends his low paying RFA years with his more expensive UFA years. (Which are coming.) That way he's more of a value player when we need him.

    ReplyDelete
  136. I had the chances at 9-10 that period.

There were two shifts that were noteworthy and first it was 13 vs the Kings fourth line and that lead to three chances in that sequence with a post apiece for 27 and 91.

Then Stoll got out vs the 89 line and the Oilers had two chances to clear it and couldn't and the Kings wound up with three chances on the same shift.

And, of yeah, another fucking PPGA.

    ReplyDelete
  137. Nah, let Gagner earn his paycheck first instead of "guessing" he will be good.

So what if gets really good and his skills command even 6 mill a year as a cap hit, after paying him 2.25 for a couple years it evens out. And thats a best case scenario. Worse case scenario is you sign him to a contract worth in the 4 mill range of the bat and he doesnt pan out.

    ReplyDelete
  138. Kris: I remember at this time last year we talked about Smid turning the corner. Did he change? Or was it downgrading the partner so much?

    ReplyDelete
  139. Sweet mother of ..., Hall and Eberle are dangerous. So much speed.

    ReplyDelete
  140. Strudwick looks absurd, falling and overcommitting.

    So far, so good though.

    ReplyDelete
  141. fgc,

"We" were probably wrong. I think I was.

    ReplyDelete
  142. If Stu McGregor is strongly of the view Sean Couturier has the chance to be a top 1- centre and we pick 7th or 8th, I would trade Gagner and our #1 for NYI's # 1 and #2.

This is not a knock on Gagner at all. Just not sure he will develop into a #1 C.

    ReplyDelete
  143. Zetterberg, not Datsyuk became a dominant player until their mid-twenties.

The expectation that Gagner should be developing at a Crosby or Toews like pace is ridiculous. Few players do.

In general, it is not a productive strategy to trade away pieces of the puzzle one already possesses.

  144. 1st positive thing that line has done in a while.

Cancel that. 20 seconds later it's a clusterf++k in their own end.

    ReplyDelete
  145. All JFJ haters have just been silenced! ha ha

    ReplyDelete
  146. LMHF:

Just texted the same thing to WoodGuy.

Why keep them on? They just made the biggest contribution they could possibly make... now get them the fuck off!

    ReplyDelete
  147. Its so fun to watch hall and eberle play together

    ReplyDelete
  148. Toj,

    Got it.

Not sure why Snow would do that unless EDM had top 3 pick to go with it.

    ReplyDelete
  149. Right there, Samwise just showed us why we're keeping him.

Beauty play on defense, dekes the centre, cross-ice stretch pass to Hall off his backhand.

    ReplyDelete
  150. That 4th line doesn't need to see the ice for the rest of this one.

    ReplyDelete
  151. Not sure NYI would want Tavares and Sean Couturier. At 6-7-8 he can get a good top 6 winger and will have 2 good centers

    ReplyDelete
  152. The spin move was excessive, but Doughty is just awesome. He just took the puck away from Cogliano when Cogs was cycling the puck the way you take a ball from a puppy.

    ReplyDelete
  153. fpb: Yes! JFJ better keep that puck.

    ReplyDelete
  154. What are Frick, Frack, and Tabernac doing on the ice vs. Kopitar in the last minute of the game?

    ReplyDelete
  155. WTF was the 16 line doing out there? They've played the whole game in their own end FFS. Renney's bench management isn't his strength.

    ReplyDelete
  156. Why the hell is the 4th line out there with less then 2 minutes to go? Bad call coach.

    ReplyDelete
  157. WG

Not when you have no wingers for them to play with

    ReplyDelete
  158. F Me that replay of the Kings tying goal makes me dispise 16 even more.

    ReplyDelete
  159. umm....sorry...forget we play 5 minutes OT first....:)

    ReplyDelete
  160. Gerta: I'd go with Gags or Whitney.

Both had a pretty good game.

    That or Omark.

    ReplyDelete
  161. Wonder if 4 got nicked tonight.

Not on the ice in OT, but on the bench.

    ReplyDelete
  162. I thought we all agreed Gagner has been banished from the shootout until further notice?

    ReplyDelete
  163. SK I'm having some fun haha :) I was hoping Whitney would give it away.

    ReplyDelete
  164. Hall, Eberle and Omark. Again, no-brainer.

Why dont we make the easy decisions?

    ReplyDelete
  165. Well, at least they didn't put Gagner in the top three.

I really like long shootouts anyway.

    ReplyDelete
  166. Nice little road trip though-very little to show for it,but I really like the way this team looks right now.

    ReplyDelete
  167. Using 13 in the shoot out = giving up.

Using 89 means almost giving up.

    More 91 in SO please.

    ReplyDelete
  168. Nice game by DD. Hope he gets a few more starts from here on in.

    ReplyDelete
  169. Gerta,

Agreed that they look really good considering the roster.

    Good times.

    ReplyDelete
  170. WG

Penner might be worse than both 13 and 89.

Don't understand lack of 91 through 6 shooters.

I like Renney's message, but some of his decisions are just goofy.

4th line out for the last 2 minutes? monumentally dumb

    ReplyDelete
  171. It didn't take long for OmarkTube to drop his shoot-out percentage in half;)

The establishment got to him, that attempt was "old school".

    ReplyDelete
  172. Sigh.

I lost 280 on this game on a 5 game parlay for 10 bucks. I needed the Oilers to win in reg and I thought it was in the bag when 22 scored.

Not sure why they were kept on for the next shift and not sure why the matched vs Kopitar.

I think it passed her unnoticed but one day not too long ago Renney said he didn't mind matching lines but he also didn't like to lose the flow of his bench.

So, going forward that might be something to worry about.

All that being said the Oilers had a helluva lot of try in this one and a lot of smarts and while DD should have had the 2-2 goal he also looked super poised for the most part.

This team should make the playoffs next year because all that's needed is experience and two guys to kill penalties; and a guy to teach em how;)

    ReplyDelete
  173. It didn't take long for OmarkTube to drop his shoot-out percentage in half;)

    No.

It was a triple fake out.

Quick expect him to go subtle since last one was excessive, but 23 knows that Quick knows that so 23 thinks Quick expects fancy, so he goes subtle.

I'd buy that for a dollar.

    ReplyDelete
  174. The Oilers had more than a lot of try, IMHO.

They almost beat arguably the third-best team in the conference (great goal differential, but stuck playing in the mighty Pacific division) without their top defensive centre and top forward.

    ReplyDelete
  175. Dennis: Yeah, I read that too. Suspect Renney will match when he has more to work with, or maybe it's just wishful thinking.
