It's a killer. An absolute anchor to the bottom of the sea. During my reasonable expectations season preview in the summer, I wrote the following:
- How important is he to the team? Vital. Beyond vital. What's the word after vital? Life or death? That's three words. Anyway, should he (or Gilbert) get injured I suggest stamp collecting this winter.
We know the injury is to an ankle, it's real and it's a spectacular FU to the Oilers 10-11 season. The latest I've found from a credible source is this tweet from Bob McKenzie. So, I have a Canadian 5 cent stamp with a beaver on it? Offers?

LORDY-LORDY!!! we're hooped!!!
ReplyDeleteIf this is related to his foot problems - is it, I don't know - then we've got bigger worries than 2011.
ReplyDeleteIn the interm this team's gonna be terrible to watch and holy fuck we've seen a lot of shitty hockey since June of 06.
I am excited (in a car wreck watching way) to see a Strudwick/Foster pairing.
ReplyDeleteMatt N: You can see it here.

To be honest, as long as the damage is something that heals in a few months, this is actually ok (given a few assumptions).
ReplyDeleteThe first assumption is that the Oilers management (and perhaps even the coach) are determined to tank the season. They have left some major holes on the team (face offs, penalty kills) and some major weak points that pointed to doom if an injury (likley) were to happen (goaltending, defense, centre, right and left wing).
So, with Whitney and Horcoff out for a While and Khabibulin playing like an AHL star, perhaps they can start to fill in the gaps without the fear of being caught by the Islanders.
Or just maybe management and the coach have some serious shortcomings and the team is totally screwed.
Anyway - its last place hockey and there should be some nifty goals by our young'uns
Jackie: So we got an attractive woman, wearing a bra, no top, walkin'
ReplyDeletearound in broad daylight. She's flouting society's conventions!
Kramer: She was flouting.
Jackie: That's totally inappropriate. It's lewd, vesivius, salacious,
outrageous!
Dumb unrelated *theoretical* question, but if Whitney's out... With the Oilers in 28th place, are we safe/able to recall Souray from waivers with little risk that the frugal Wang or NJ (?no cap space) claim him?
ReplyDeleteNot that it would happen regardless, but would it be clear sailing if we did, or am I missing something?
Jay: All other 29 teams have to pass on him. Our own place in the standings is irrelevant.
ReplyDeleteThanks Schizo, I should have remembered that. :p

Yes. Last season I reached the point where I couldn't watch anymore around game 55 or so. At first, it was like a train wreck and I couldn't take my eyes off it. Then at some point watching the Oilers just became cruel and unusual punishment.
Depends whose Beaver it is on the stamp.
ReplyDeleteDarryl Sutter will be in hot demand. Oil should snap him up before someone else does.
ReplyDeleteHello lowetide. Love your material and a long time reader.
ReplyDeleteI was trying to search for a contact email to get a hold of you but couldn't come up with one. I was wanting to ask if you could put www.oilogosphere.com in your list of oiler sites you have in the right column. Sorry for the inappropriate message but it was my only option.
Cheers!
What the hell did you trade Jay Buhner for??
ReplyDeleteOmark sits tomorrow.
ReplyDeleteI don't mind the call, but it would be a lot more palatable if we had more depth - as it is, scratching a regular means that at least one of Strudwick, MacIntyre, and JFJ is playing.
What the hell did you trade Jay Buhner for??
ReplyDeleteMy scouts kept telling me...Ken Phelps bat,Ken Phelps bat...
Whitney's injury is beyond the facepalm for this organization. And as others have noted, the clarity that will be provided with this injury will help the club in the longterm.
Lottery here we come!
I've officially started watching and cheering for the Devils and the Islanders.
ReplyDeleteJust clicked on Raine's Oilogosphere link and find the basically what he does is link all of the other blogs out there on one site in a 'newspaper' style.
ReplyDeleteFirst, I have to give the guy credit for the initiative- it really could be a winner if he cleans it up (half the site is still the 'filler' material put there by the designer - not the best way to launch a site). I remember Raine pushing his blog all over the place a few months ago, but it was pretty weak relative to the other stuff out there. If this is legal, he could do very very well with it.
Second, I wonder if LT, ON, and the other key bloggers should (or can) prevent the other site from linking to them. Not sure what the legalities are around this.
Anyway, I can't decide if I think this is a bit like being a leach (or maybe a pimp), or if it is someone who deserves to profit by presenting the Oil news in an organized manner (not quite there yet, but you can see the potential) that could be beneficial to readers (and bloggers if people find their way to blogs because of it). I think the capitalist in me is at odds with the idealist in me...
www.oilogosphere.com = Best site ever...
ReplyDeletebookie
ReplyDeleteThis site has been doing it for years and they have an active advertising base. It's not quite an apples to
apples comparison but the site drives visits to the linked articles, and the stories that are featured in the "today's editor pick" see an increase in
traffic.Seems like a win/win to me.
This is the place to go if you follow golf-I've been using this site for years, and it's precursors tour insider dot com and the daily dozen.
I stumbled across the Oilogosphere site last week-it's pretty cool and buddy should be commended* for getting there first.
*unless the lawyers on this site tell me it's against the law, then I want nothing to do with it,have never seen him,his site,or know anything about
anything*
Not that it would have made any difference anyways, since Tambo and Lowe have pulled the wool over Katz eyes for several summers in a row and he's not going to fire them, but for the fourth year running, V3.0 and Vish can hide behind the injuries excuse.
ReplyDeleteThis team would be right there competing for the cup if we could just stay healthy *bookie thingy*
Gerta - Yeah, I largely agree. I give the guy credit for his initiative for 'getting there first' as you say. I suspect that the Oilers might have some problems with his Oildrop logo, but other bloggers might be happy to get traffic from his site, particularly if it becomes established.
ReplyDeleteIt will be interesting to see how it moves forwards. He still seems to be on the learning curve in terms of 'quality' (ipsum larum...etc.), but its a great idea and he appears to be highly motivated.
Hahha.
ReplyDeleteNashville just pulled the rug under St-Louis' feet.
BTW: Unless brutal luck continues NJ will go up the standings.
ReplyDeleteEven if they lost theyr 3 games under Lemaire they outshot the opposition by more than 20 shots on every occasion.
Run for the hills boys, she's gonna get ugly 'round here without Whitney.
ReplyDeleteClarkenstein: Love a good beaver joke, if this was the other site LT posts on you would have gotten a "prop".
Think of the salary cap you're saving by having him on LTIR!
ReplyDeleteYergh.
David Poile once again shows why he's been a top 5 GM in the league for years.
ReplyDeleteNo "old boys club" nod, wink and not claim someone who can help your club.
Divisional rival trying to get better? Fuck you, I need scoring too. Welcome to Nashville Mr. Svatos.
Nice work Mr. Poile.
Would you please send your resume to Mr. Katz.

ReplyDeleteI posted the following in a JW thread at ON about "Improvement"on December 18th:
ReplyDeleteIn the next 12 games (up to Jan 15th), they only have 3 games against non Western playoff teams. Those games are BUF, NYI, and CAL.
I bet they are going to come out the other side of these 12 games with about 8 of 24 points and be less than 50% SC in at least 10 of those games.
Looks like I might have been generous with the points prediction. So far they have 1 of 8 points or a .125pts% since that day, whereas I guessed they would clip along at about .333
Now they lose their actual MVP.
Another long winter of discontent.
*sigh*
Top 3 picks this year (Couturier, Landeskog, Larsson) are something to get, past that I don't see many AAA prospects. Not a RNH fan.
WG: SB's son looks allright (Duncan Siemens) Him and Dougie Hamilton are two 6''3 defenseman projecting for 60 points.
ReplyDeleteRyan Murphy is projecting for a 100 points on defense. Jeez.
Ryan Strome projecting over a 100 points.
Draft isn't week at all.
weak*
ReplyDeleteFBV: Luck might be part of the picture but the Devils have a goal differential of -1.5/game and we're almost halfway through the season. It is hard to be that bad.
ReplyDeleteThree years from now, nobodys gonna care about Whitney missing 30 games in 10'11.
ReplyDeleteThe fact that it gave MBS power to draft a stud though, will reap benefits for the next decade or more.
It's destiny. A great time to get excited about the future. Now just sit back and enjoy the kids. Ignore the scoreboard.
"We know the injury is to an ankle, it's real and it's a spectacular FU to the Oilers 10-11 season."
ReplyDeleteMaybe just the mood I am in but holy this gave me a laugh. Spectacular.
I'll add one - "Hit me again Ike!"
