In 2007-08, the Edmonton Oilers had two rookie forwards they liked in offensive roles: Andrew Cogliano and Sam Gagner. Lacking clear alternatives, the Oilers gave a lot of powerplay time to the kids.
388 minutes, or about 16% of their total (2,400) minutes as rookies were spent on the PP. What did they do with those minutes? Gagner gobbled up the most time (221 and a half) and went 4-12-16. This represented a 4.33/60 minutes number on the PP. The point total (16) was fully 32.6% of his overall offense. Cogliano went 1-6-7 in 166.5 minutes, or 2.52/60 on the PP. Cogs' point total was only 15.6% of his overall offense.
The Edmonton Oilers 10-11 have a unique problem. Fully four of their rookies will probably earn powerplay time (based on roster makeup and organizational mission statement) this season, an enormous and frankly impossible total. When predicting their boxcars this season, powerplay time is an extreme wild card.
--
- Boxcars: 49gp, 12-17-29 (all numbers SEL)
- Shots: 160
- Plus Minus: +14
- What do these numbers tell us? He had a good season in a solid pro league. Although Hall and Eberle are more well known to North American fans, this player has a wealth of pro experience. That's the number one tell from these numbers. He also takes a large number of shots (3.26 per game); if he managed that in a full NHL season, we'd be looking at 267 shots (well clear of Penner's team leading 203). I believe he'll be as much a shooter as Chipper Jones, if that helps.
- How could these numbers be better? He seems to be a streaky bugger offensively. I nicked him a bit for that, I think the Oilers will have little hesitation to let some of these kids view a game or three from the gondola. The plus minus implies he might have some special skills as a 2-way player, but betting against that (gifted offensive players are rarely aware of what is happening at the other end as they enter pro) is probably a good idea. I think his SEL experience will be beneficial but fully expect the whistle to blow at training camp several times to go over positioning (again) for specific situations. All young players do this, well maybe not Craig Ramsay as a rookie but he had Roger Neilson nattering in his ear before turning pro.
- What will we notice about him? Foot speed and size. He's listed as 6.01, 201 and that makes him bigger than the other three prospects (Hall: 6.01, 185; Jordan Eberle: 5.10, 174; Linus Omark 5,09, 170). I don't know that he has much idea about how to use his size, but this is a marathon and not a sprint. He's going to learn this stuff if he's as good as advertised.
- Anything else? His age. I've read a few placed where people talk about him being more mature than some of the other kids coming to camp. He might be physically bigger, but MPS was born just 7 months before Taylor Hall. In terms of maturity, I think they're going to be pretty close. The good indicator re: age is that the kid has done a lot before age 20 than tells us he can compete against men.
- What are his Desjardins NHLE's? 16-22-38. That puts him behind Hall and Eberle, but only by a few points. I don't think we can really give anyone a clear edge without all of the time on ice totals.
- Will he be a complete player? This is probably going to be the Achilles for Edmonton's rookie forward prospects. All are wingers--the hockey equivalent of LW or 1B--but there are things that might make one a better penalty killer or another a better option for an energy 4th line. I suspect Eberle and Omark to be the better options for the forseeable future, but it is a guess.
- How much PP do you see him getting? Less than Gagner did, that's for damn sure. Maybe Cogliano's total plus a little bit?
- How many of the points below are PP points? 12.
- Why are these projections so low? Remember when Pisani rode shotgun for Stoll and Torres? Nice veteran presence, a guy who did subtle but important things to send the play in the right direction. If you could name the fellow who will play "Pisani" to one of these rookies, then I'll start feeling better about their rookie totals. As it is, some of these estimates will be too high.
- But you agree that Pääjärvi will be the first or second of the group sent down? No. I think Omark is the first one off the island, followed by Eberle. The two speed demons stay.
Prediction for 2010-11: 66gp, 12-18-30
More OOH's and AAH's than GF, but he's a player
Long time reader first time poster, love your work lowetide.
ReplyDeleteI gotta say that I feel MPS was an absolute steal at 10th overall. I'd say out of our young guns he is the most NHL ready. He has already proven himself against men in the SEL as well as having an amazing showing at the WHC earlier this summer.
If Magnus recieves a fair share of powerplay time and has some decent linemates (I would love to see him on a line that looks like this Paarjarvi-Horcoff-Hemsky), then I think he will be pushing for the calder. Maybe I'm being too optimistic but I really have high hopes for this player.
i agree, JustBeCool....i was always baffeled as to why Dallas took Scott Glennie, and Toronto took Nazim Kadri, as well as Phoenix taking Oliver Ekman-Larsson over MPS. those players are talented no doubt, but i would have picked MPS over all 3, right or wrong!
ReplyDelete@Dug
ReplyDeleteRealize that we also get a focus on coverage here in Edmonton on Oiler prospects. So when an Oiler prospect does well at the World Juniors, we know about it. But when Kadri, Ekman-Larsson or Glennie does well, there isn't as much attention paid to them. MPS certainly looks good right now, but a lot of prospects look good before they step into the NHL.
The NHL is the great equalizer as it were.
right, Master Lok, and i was just checking Ekman-Larsson's on Hockey's future, and he's ranked at 8.5C out of ten, which is a very high ranking, and is the 'Yotes top prospect (by a mile up to the recent draft). but i suppose i shouldn't have been surprised by the picks after the top 5 went exactly as experts had said they would. i guess a lot of the 1st round is a crapshoot, no?
ReplyDeleteHere's hoping he isn't Radek Dvorak 2.0.
ReplyDelete..Not that Dvorak (also selected 10th overall in his draft year) is horrible or anything. Just hoping for more is all.
Simply, thanks.
ReplyDeleteWhat Oilers fan wouldn't read this blog?
Lowetide...
ReplyDeleteI'm beginning to wonder if the disaster that was last season, and the poor performance of so many players in relation to your RE's last year are playing in your predictions for this year.
I think players like Hall, Eberle and Magnus are going to be put into better positions than Gagner was in his first season, and given their pedigree and experience (Gags was arguably more of a RAW rookie than any of them), I find it tough to believe that at least one of them won't top his first-year numbers.
Just sayin'
I hope the Oilers finish last again. Than they can start rebuilding
ReplyDeleteLT,
ReplyDeleteJust wanted to put it out there that MPS up until 07/06 played defense his entire career. Timra converted him to a forward since he had great speed and they had defensive depth. Now I'm not saying he was as apt on the D-line as he is on the O-line but anyone who plays the game for 6+ years on defense is going to be better positionally and know what to do physically then someone who has not. I think we will be really surprised by MPS's all around game.
Anon: Cool. Did not know that. The Euro players who are converted (going back to Bengt Gustafsson) are usually solid 2-way players. Very good news, thanks!
ReplyDeleteWhy would anyone want the Oilers to finish last?
ReplyDeleteI do not understand the fact people want to Oilers to keep rebuilding. Wouldn't it be nice to see Hemsky, Penner, Gagner, Gilbert, Hall, etc . . . in a competitive race for the final playoff spot, or even a eight place squeak in? I would like to see the kids get some playoff experince (since a lot of them have zero gp in the playoffs), and the team look slightly respectable again to help resign Hemsky/Penner or Others. Plus, I am tired of other team fans making fun of us. This is less of a problem if you live in Edmonton but it is shitty for the rest of us.
To the Swedish man-child: I think that he should get AHL time but will likely not. If he is playing significant time with Hemsky and/or Gagner, he needs to have at least 15 goals for it to reasonable expectations. So I would go 70gp, 17-23-40 (or 0.571 pts/g to Lt's 0.454 pts/g).
LT, regarding MPS maturity and being only 7 months older than Hall. I think MPS could be the most NHL ready compared to Hall and Eberle. He's been playing against men the last couple of years and in terms of maturity off the ice, Magnus is way ahead of Hall and Eberle. I can't remember where I read last year, I think it was from the boys over at Copper and Blue, mentioned that when Magnus moved away from home to play with Timra. He opted to live by him self. I couldn't imagine living on my own at 16 and playing pro hockey.
ReplyDeleteSo when an Oiler prospect does well at the World Juniors, we know about it. But when Kadri, Ekman-Larsson or Glennie does well, there isn't as much attention paid to them. MPS certainly looks good right now, but a lot of prospects look good before they step into the NHL.
ReplyDeleteSome of us actually do like to get a read on the competition's pipelines every once in a while to get a sense of where our rivals are headed. Of the three that you mentioned, only OEL looks to be tracking better than Magnus. I certainly didn't have him ranked as high as 6th overall on my board last year but dude has really turned it on this year. He's top-pair material now (which isn't really something that can be said about another high-pick defenseman, Cowen). I think all of Canada minus perhaps the die-hard Leaves fans saw Kadri bad during the WJCs. Kid couldn't hit the broad side of a barn with a one-timer and would always be trying to take on 3 or 4 defenders instead of making a pass. He's cocky, wants to do it all himself and doesn't have the talent to back it up. Plus he plays like an asshole. Darcy Tucker picked with the 7th overall selection. Glennie's got more injury problems than Marc Pouliot. Full stop.
That said, we're damn lucky to have idiot GMs picking ahead of us the last couple of years. From as far back as 2007 (Thomas Hickey) there have been scouting departments making egregious errors, and for once they're not affiliated with the Oilers.
Prospect babble aside, I send the kid back to Sweden for the year, and keep him as far away from Edmonton as we can. Wait until ST gets his organization running smoothly and Renney has had the chance to find his way around the Oilers bench before we give him the keys to all our high-end talent. LT, I wrote on this already over at my blog, so I won't bore everyone with the details.
Why would anyone want the Oilers to finish last?
ReplyDeletespeeds loves rebuilds and prospects. His love of them infected HFboards where they took it to all time retarded levels.
I don't want the Oilers to finish last, but given that we've let Moore and Madden pass for chump change, have signed three mediocre to bad goaltenders (and a drunk) and won't be spending to the cap this season I don't really feel like this is the season we're going to the Cup finals or even making the playoffs. So, why the hell wouldn't I hope for another superstar prospect? It's no fun, but management has sent signals that this is a punt season so I'm going to hope that everyone looks great, but our goaltenders post a combined .800 SV%.
ReplyDeleteMy real hope at the beginning of the offseason though was that we grabbed some veterans for the third line, acquired a guy like Bieksa to shore up the defense, and picked up a Dan Ellis-type. Add that to what we have and you're a couple of good coin flips in terms of your rookies showing up away from a good season. Instead, this team is looking at a couple of Calder/near-Calder rookie seasons just to make the playoffs, given the goaltending and bottom of the roster talent.
The rebuild should've started two years earlier, but it didn't, and it could probably have ended this season, but it didn't. It's not speeds fault, it's just how it is.
And, I'd just like to say that I'd really appreciate if the NHL would redo how draft position works so there's zero incentive to dive. I'd much rather be rooting for 20th than 30th, but right now 30th is substantially more valuable than 20th.
ReplyDeleteUntil this season I wanted all non-playoff teams in a lottery to pick first overall. Then the Oilers were 30th, and all of a sudden it looked like a terrible idea.
ReplyDeleteMore OOH's and AAH's than GF, but he's a player
ReplyDeleteI think you mean more ÖÖH's and ÄÄH's LT.
"And, I'd just like to say that I'd really appreciate if the NHL would redo how draft position works so there's zero incentive to dive. I'd much rather be rooting for 20th than 30th, but right now 30th is substantially more valuable than 20th."
ReplyDeleteIt wouldn't work because your proposal drastically favors teams with money and fucks over teams with a budget.
60 million cap team should produce a better team than a 45 million cap team.
More money, better teams, better picks.
It all favors the spenders and small market clubs would never OK in the CBA.
MPS is my new favorite player. I don't expect much from him this year.
ReplyDeleteCan't wait to hear LT's thoughts on Omark. Interesting player no matter whether you think he's the new Schremp or not.
----
Traktor,
Good point.
I think a better proposal would be to have a little mini-tournament amongst the losing teams to see who picks first. Make it single elimination: that pretty much guarantees that every team has a decent chance of winning the 1st overall pick. Even the Islanders can win a few games against non-playoff teams.
Something like this: Bottom 12 teams pair off (however) and play one game elimination against each other. The other two non-playoff teams get a bye until the second round. The second round, then has the remaining 8 teams pair off for another 1 game elimination series, and then pair off again.
You can play a lot of these games during the breaks between the playoff rounds. Whatever. Adds revenue to the league. In years where there's a Crosby type player, it creates mega-excitement. Allows players to feel pride that they still won something of consequence.
It would kill the incentive to sell players at the deadline or to go into the season with a horrid team. It would also make perenial tanking a bad strategy, which isn't so bad.
It might still hurt -as you suggest- some really low budget teams, but only if they were so badly managed that they couldn't put together a minimally competitive team on a budget. (We've seen the Oilers do that, the Preds., lots of teams.)
Of course, the NHL will never go for it because it's not traditional or something. But it's a dynamite idea. Win-win.
kris,
ReplyDeleteI'm pretty sure the KHL does something like that.
But what incentive would Toronto have in said mini-tournament this past season? Or does Boston take part in playoffs and the mini-tournament?
That is really interesting kris!
ReplyDeleteVery non-traditional tho..
Seems hard (very hard) to believe that the Oil would have drafted 1st, but that is the point right?! Rouge Orgs shouldnt be able to game the system, diving for premier prospects.. Anyways, cool idea..
It makes no sense for the health of the NHL (or any league) to expand the number of teams who get a shot at the first overall pick. The reality is that the 1st in each round is often a pretty valuable lifeline for a team that is likely in dire straights both on and off the ice.
ReplyDeleteThe rebuild should've started two years earlier, but it didn't, and it could probably have ended this season, but it didn't. It's not speeds fault, it's just how it is.
A rebuild shouldn't end this season. Your plan would be to spend to the cap/ budget and try and cobble together a defence and some forward depth to make the playoffs. How is that different than what we have had for the last 20 years? That is not how you build a contender, especially in a market that is not a preferred destination for free agents.
That is the Leafs model. I don't like what they are doing. Maybe it will work, but it will rely on their greater ability to attract free agents there.
I don't think the Oilers are even at the end of the beginning of the rebuild. Unless the defence fairy drops off 2 shutdown stud defenceman, the Oilers are still going to need to go through one or two more lottery drafts to assemble the necessary prospects, maybe shed a Penner or Hemsky and then suffer thru a few years of watching the kids play (poorly).
The problem I have with this all or nothing rebuild scenario is it assumes the only way an org mines gold in the draft is by finishing in the basement. Certainly that skews the odds in your favor, but it doesn't explain why teams like Detroit, NJ, Colorado and Montreal can mine gold in the draft whilst remaining competitive in the meantime.
ReplyDeletePersonally, I would love to have seen the Oilers sign any or all of Lombardi, Bieksa or Ellis to give ourselves a much more competitive and entertaining team to watch this season. As long as you time the expiration of those deals so it aligns with the top prospects coming off their entry level deals, I much prefer that approach over shit-canning 2 or 3 seasons because your development efforts simply can't turn anything other than a top 3 pick into a legitimate star.
Of the top 20 scorers last season, 7 of them were drafted outside the Top 5. Obviously some teams are finding upper echelon talent without resorting to tanking their seasons.
Ducey:
ReplyDeleteAgreed that on paper it seems like TO should have a better chance of attracting FAs, but how often have they actually signed a significant one?
Traktor: I think drastically is overstating it a bit considering two spend-to-the-cap teams just drafted #1 and 2. Install a weighted lottery, teams missing the playoffs get a 6.0% shot each, teams losing in the first get a 1.5% chance, figure out the remainder.
ReplyDeleteBeing on a budget doesn't mean your team is going to draft in the top three every year (look at Anaheim, Nashville, CBJ, etc.), the more likely predictor is terrible management or injury bugs. Atlanta sniffs around the top five every year because they have/had a terrible GM, not because they can't get enough free talent. Small market teams also don't have the financial buffer to finish in the bottom of the league constantly and ruin their fanbase's interest so this allows them the possibility of a superstar, but also the ability to focus entirely on sweet, sweet playoff revenue.
Your plan would be to spend to the cap/ budget and try and cobble together a defence and some forward depth to make the playoffs.
No, my plan would be to make some smart bets and give yourself a puncher's chance. What happens if you tank this season? Horcoff is one year older, Penner/Hemsky either need fat new contracts or need to be moved, and you blow a year of Hall/MPS/Eberle's cheap contracts for the hopes of getting another superstar (which isn't close to a sure thing, this team has a ridiculous amount of talent, the only way we finish bottom three is if the goaltending is worse than last year or a plane crashes.)
What would I have done? Sniffed around Frolov/Moore/Madden, maybe you have to pay extra, but if they're coming on one year deals that's no problem. I would've done my best to move Souray and address the hole in our top four, long-term. Signed a guy or two who PK effectively, even if they can't do anything else. Neglected to sign JDD and picked up Biron/Ellis.
Not a single move that hurt our long-term flexibility, but added a lot of veteran talent to shelter the rookies and give them decent players to play alongside.
Quain, couldn't agree more. Unfortunately I think Tambi's hands are tied far more than the org would ever care to admit because of the Khabibulin and Souray situations, but the Oiler org is leaning on the 'young prospects' crutch prettily heavily. Bottom line, they're coming off a last place finish and their only FA signing of significance thus far is a third pairing D-man.
ReplyDeleteClearly Hall has to make the team out of camp. How else do you justify these offseason 'improvements' to the average season ticket holder?
But you agree that Pääjärvi will be the first or second of the group sent down? No. I think Omark is the first one off the island, followed by Eberle. The two speed demons stay.
ReplyDeleteI see Eberle as the first of the four gone. I'd like to see him spend some more time playing against men.
The battle comes down to MPS and Omark. Both have been playing against men with success for multiple seasons. Omark is older, too, lets not forget he`s the same age as Brule.
Unfortunately Hall stays no matter what happens. I think he could benefit the most from 30 games as a baron.
I`d bet they`ll all be full-time Oilers before you`re done your Christmas shopping.
this team has a ridiculous amount of talent, the only way we finish bottom three is if the goaltending is worse than last year or a plane crashes
ReplyDeleteIf you look at the other bottom feeders they all have great talent and prospects too (except maybe CBJ).
The talent in EDM is up front. As LT has pointed out, the first year for these guys on offence is going to be around 30 to 40 pts each. That is pretty average. They also won't know how to play decent defence for a few years.
The problem with last year's team was defence and if anything the D looks worse going into this year. They were last in GA by a mile.
I think it will be amazing if the Oilers finish higher than 25th.
Hey Scott,
ReplyDeleteBut what incentive would Toronto have in said mini-tournament this past season? Or does Boston take part in playoffs and the mini-tournament?
1. Obviously Boston can't take part given playoff scheduling.
2. a.) Players seem to be able to play with a lot of effort even when there are no concrete benefits to winning. Some guys on losing teams mail it in a bit. But then again, some guys mail it in during the Stanley cup playoffs too. b.) Pride is all that really motivates guys to win the cup in the first place. And there'd be some pride in winning the mini-tournament too. (Good results make you look better as a player, maybe you get a better contract, etc.)
I bet the hockey we'd see wouldn't be Stanley cup intensity for the most part, but they're might be a few great games in there too.
But it's better than no games.
That said, the trickier problem is if one of the teams in the mini-tourney has another's pick. Does team A take a dive to let team B win so team A can draft first? Hmm...
Not sure exactly how you solve that.
But any solution is going to make it hard or impossible to trade 1st round picks. But if you really want a mini-tourney like this, you want that to happen anyway to make sure the fans are interested. You can still trade prospects and picks from the other rounds, etc.
Lee: Well at least the grass ain't greener elsewhere.
ReplyDeleteLook at MTL. How do you want to sell a team that can do a cup run? We traded our MVP so that we could make our questionable pick play and then we got Dustin Boyd?
I'd say the odds are good the Oil could shift MTL this year. (yay for parity)
@ flamingpavelbure
ReplyDeleteAt least the Habs didn't make the same mistake Lowe made after 06 (i.e. giving a player a massive contract on the basis of a cinderella playoff run). If you're saying Halak's the better of the two, I would agree with you, but there's plenty of league insiders that seem to think Price is the better long-term bet partly because Halak has shown a propensity to wear down over a longer sched.
Plekanec and Subban are two prime examples of player types the Oil have been trying to develop without success for the better part of a decade. I wouldn't bet on the Oil passing the Habs anytime soon because Montreal has shown time and again they know how to develop their talent. We've shown the ability to 'draft' well of late. Whether drafting well turns into proper development is a whole other can of worms with this org. At least the initial indications with OKC are promising.
"Plekanec and Subban are two prime examples of player types the Oil have been trying to develop without success for the better part of a decade."
ReplyDeleteOf course none of this had anything to do with the head coach of the Oilers over the past decade.
Lee: Yes Halaks wears down in a long schedule. But that's because he had no real backup. If he played, it was because he was winning nothing else. If Price went into the net and won, he stayed. So Halak had no help on the stamina side, he had no choice to play.
ReplyDeleteWhen he's fatigued he's just at Price's level. That guy lets in the biggest backbreaking goals in the whole world, and he constantly gets beaten by the same shots. He's kinda like JDD in some way.
"Of course none of this had anything to do with the head coach of the Oilers over the past decade."
ReplyDeleteI think the fact that the Oil spent a lot of energies developing players in the bigs instead of in the minors was definitely part of the issue. For every Scremp that stayed too long in the A, there was a Smid, Cogliano or Chorney put on the fast track to nowhere.
@FPB
ReplyDeleteCertainly one thing Halak's got going for him is John Davidson betting on him. I think JD knows a thing or two about goalie talent.
No doubt the Habs will have serious egg on their face if Price flops BUT some goalies are better with competition pushing them and some are better secure in the knowledge that they're the man. Price definitely seems to be the fragile confidence type so positively Halak's departure spurs him to greater heights?
One thing's for sure. It's one of the more compelling stories for next season. Could Halak end up haunting them ala Roy? Time will tell :)
(sic) Should be possibly, not positively. Hate that you can't edit comments after the fact with blogger.
ReplyDeleteLee: We already did that when Huet was here, we traded to make space and Price blew it. He's been constantly favored and given the net back. He's never really been pressured in any way.
ReplyDeleteWell, getting rid of Huet seemed to have worked out better for MTL than it did CHI.
ReplyDeletePrice is still very young (in goalie years). And he's got some serious credentials. According to his wiki (I know!), he is the only goaltender in hockey history to be named CHL Goaltender of the Year, World Junior Championship's tournament MVP and win the Jack A. Butterfield Trophy for Calder Cup MVP, all in the same year. I think Hab fans may find he's worth the wait.
To use LT's parlance, I 'saw him good' in the WJC and in his first playoff series v Boston, and I think he's the real deal. Like EDM though, playing in MTL is an absolute pressure cooker. If the fans cut this kid some slack, he may reward your patience? He's accomplished so much already, it's easy to forget he's only 23.
And then there's Halak who NEVER had a losing season anywhere he played. A guy who dragged the Slovakian team in the semis carrying the team on his shoulders. A guy who constantly improved each and every season. The goalie who holds the NHL record for the winner of a series with the highest shot against (WSH), and who took Montreal to a Conference Final in which they should have never appeared. A guy's who's a Hardworker and never says the wrong thing with the media, while Price is his whiny opposite.
ReplyDeleteReally, what Price did in the AHL, WHL or WJC no one will give a damn if he doesn't make a solid proof of his talent in the NHL like Halak did.
smarmy:
ReplyDeleteI was a big fan of rebuilds in the old CBA, where you had control of your players until 31 and dealt with a more depressed RFA market, in terms of cost relative to value, than the current UFA market.
I am not nearly as big a fan of "rebuilding" in this CBA because I don't think it's nearly as important to draft and develop in this CBA as it was in the old CBA. Of course, if free agents won't sign with you maybe I change my mind, but I'm still not convinced that is EDM's biggest problem in terms of competitiveness over the last couple years, and going forward.
That said, once it's obvious your team isn't looking at all likely to make the playoffs, like the Oilers must have in early January last year, I don't think it makes a lot of sense to be agressively trying to pick up wins which will only see you finish, say, 6th-8th last, instead of 1st-3rd last.
Halak is not a big goaltender. Hockey db has him listed at 5.11 174lbs. Halak is living proof that drafting goaltenders because they are tall is plain foolishness. jdd!
ReplyDeletequain:
ReplyDeletePretty much agree dead on with the first two paragraphs of your first post in this thread. In fact,
if I ever get the posts up, I've kind of written much the same thoughts about the EDM offseason thusfar. I'd have also preferred them to spend to the cap and try to make the playoffs by filling holes this past summer, but since they seem positioned to not make the playoffs, they may as well miss in 26-30th instead of in 17-20th.
I'm less sure about the third one though, I'm not sure I necessarily would have been for a "full rebuild" back in summer 2008, for the same reasons I'm not really for it now - I think they can become a top team without it so why spend/waste 2,3 4 years building if you don't need to?
However, if the argument is that you do need to, then I do agree that one probably could/should have been of that mind after any of the last number of seasons, not just now after finishing dead last.
Just to agree with Doritogrande, OE Larsson was the the best Swedish defenceman, and one of their best players in the WHC. He even used his body effectively a number of times.
ReplyDeleteHe wasn't 6th on a lot of boards, but he was a very high riser, and the fear was that he had risen very quickly in a very short span of time (half a season) so it might have been an outlier on his true potential/performance. The flip side was that he was a special player #1 D material, and his meteoric rise showed that he was just scratching the surface of his potential. It seems to have been the latter as the lad has come into his own, and added solid positional play, and some physical edge to his already impressive speed, passing, and decent size.
I'd be happy with OEL or MPS.
With the way the 3-6 D are lining up, I'd rather keep these kids away from the big club. OTOH they'll have plenty of opportunity to work on their d-zone coverage.
ReplyDelete"Justin Bourne:
ReplyDeleteQuick mention - guy in Oilers organization I talked to said they offered MORE for Boogaard than NYR"
"Spector:
You're kidding, Justin!"
"Justin Bourne:
Haha, right? One year shorter term, but more cash."
Pulled this exchange off the Puck Daddy Hockey Rumors Live Chat.
Pretty scary if true.
Bob:
ReplyDeleteI heard that too, from more conventional sources (TSN iirc) than 'someone in the org'...
why do you bring it up now tho?
I thought the Larry Brooks column was a work of fiction, trying to deflect criticism from Sather over the signing. Wasn't aware TSN had confirmed it was the truth. The chat transcript was from today.
ReplyDeleteRe: MPS as a D-man early on... this thread on him as a 14 year old from HF doesn't his position, but given the stats it doesn't suggest he's a D-man at that age...

I saw MPS at the prospects camp. He's bigger than Hall in every single way. Taller, wider, thicker. Hall was listed as 6.1 in the OHL, 6.05 at the draft/combine, and having seen him in person I'd say 6' is actually the most he is. Magnus is a solid 6'1, possibly 6'2. He was definitely taller than Hall or Eberle at the autograph signings and much, much broader in the shoulders.
