This Father's Day finds everyone in good health at my house and the kids growing up unabated. The boy has a dream (the Vancouver Film School, the price of which has me looking for empties in ditches day and night), the girl has about 50 of them (rock star or a writer at this point, plus she's a vegetarian--the first in the history of the family. Did you know a veggie burger is done when it turns GREEN on the barbeque? I think that's right) and my wife handles her three kids with aplomb while still finding time to look beautiful every damn day.
She's a great girl (I married better than she did) despite turning down my idea about 6 weeks ago ("Sandra Bullock should live with us!") and there isn't much we're without (although if Diane Lane moved next door that would be okay, I guess) at this time.
I know a bunch of you have families and a few guys who post here still have their Dads and Moms. Today's the day to tell them you love them, buy them a Skilsaw or a double-double and remember they're gone forever when they go.
Happy Father's Day, gents. And good luck to your ladies. :-)

I'll have an Oiler post up later this morning. Hard to keep up with all the Oiler trade activity but we'll do our best.
Did you know the word "vegetarian" comes from the Cree word meaning "clumsy hunter"?
ReplyDeleteBet you didn't know that certain hockey execs in our town were
(a) part Cree
and
(b) vegetarians
*(None of the above is necessarily true. The waiting may be getting to me.)
Happy Fathers Day oldtimer! ;)
ReplyDeleteNothing better than being a Dad as far as I am concerned. Enjoy.

ReplyDeleteYup. =( And to be honest, I lost track of Father's Day this year: Dad's gone and I don't have kids yet, so I don't have the anticipation to remember it.
That being said, today is an appropriate day to finally mow the back lawn.
Damn, Doogie. How did you know about my back lawn?
ReplyDeleteThis father's day is the one I will remember forever. First of all I have two wonderful children that are young enough to still think I am cool. secondly last Saturday my father had a heart attack and I did not think we would have him for another day let alone an entire week and hopefully many years.
ReplyDeleteMy father is a great man and really should have wrote a book on being a parent. He also grew up in Maidstone, but I believe is A few years older than LT (dad is 62). He lived and breathed sports. Last Friday I found out he was having some funny symptoms and as the physician in the family I get the phone calls for all that ails everyone. I had him get to Saskatoon where he had a stent for a 100% blockage of the main artery supplying the left ventricle. Scary stuff.
Fortunately he is doing well and left hospital yesterday ( with a second stent as well). Every day is like bonus time for me with the greatest man I have ever known.
Ps. If any of you are smokers put them away forever. The only risk factor he had was smoking. He thought he was invincible too:)
Speaking as a guy who has only intermittently been poking his head in and out of Oilersdom for the last couple of weeks, you gave me quite a start this morning, as I frantically googled "Edmonton Oilers" before realizing you were being sarcastic.
ReplyDeleteThanks for that ;)
Jonathan: I miss your posts, man.
ReplyDeleteeidy: 62, huh? Well if he grew up in Maidstone he probably either bloodied me in a broomball game or threw a fastball by my ear in baseball. :-)
Glad to hear your Dad got out of the hospital. That's some scary stuff you went through.
My 16 month old daughter woke me up this morning by pounding my back gleefully yelling "DAD,DAD,DAD!!"
ReplyDeleteBest feeling in the world.
Lost my own Dad 6 years ago.
Isn't a day that goes by that I wouldn't mind asking his advice on something or opinion on a subject.
Happy Father's Day to all.
Dad's been gone for over 20 years. No kids of my own, but I'd really like it if Ms. Lane called me 'daddy' just once.
ReplyDeleteHave a good one guys.
sorry did not pick up the autocompletion above Dea is me.
ReplyDeleteThis is one area we can agree to disagree on LT.
ReplyDeleteMy wife married me despite numerous and obvious warning signs and has stuck with me for 10 years (as of this past Thursday), providing me with 3 feral boys in the process.
I wouldn't take 3 Diane Lanes/Sandra Bullocks/name your persons for the one of her.
Today is a good day (and then New Zealand tied those diving fairies!).
I recently found out my wife is pregnant and we're gleefully expecting our first in November. I'm very much looking to being a dad and everyday is thrilling and exciting... kinda like reading this blog and posts. Happy Fathers Day to you all. A year from now I look forward to being in your ranks.
ReplyDeleteDeath by Misadventure: Congratulations! Sleep when your kids sleep!
ReplyDeleteEidy/LT
ReplyDeleteInteresting I was born and raised in Maidstone until the age of 7 years old. Last name is Smith. My dad is 59 right now turning 60 this fall.
LT,
ReplyDeleteI kind of feel like you're the Dad of the Oilogosphere. Your influence beats in the hearts of all the Oiler blogs. A shining example of what a good blog needs to grow up to be.
As a grateful fan of all the work and love you give this blog (and our team), Happy Father's Day!
...Myself, I'm hoping yet another year slides by without bastard children showing up on the doorstep. So far, so good. I'm probably gonna head out for a Guiness and Brazilian football poetry. If they're really my bastard child, well they'd know where to find me.
My Dad had a pretty severe heart attack last year requiring 3 stents after the fact. As eidy says, very scary stuff.
ReplyDeleteFor a while, it very much took the wind out of his sails and it was sad to see such an active person having to change his life so drastically. Lately though, he's really turned the corners. He's been out roto-tilling and putting in a garden and fixing everything in sight, essentially being the handyman he's always been. It's gotten to the point where we're having to tell him to slow down again.
It's great to see him happy again and certainly adds a lot of poignancy to this particular day. Happy Fathers Day to everyone. Enjoy.
Mr. Smitty: I went to school with a Craig Smith. He went to U of S. and I think he still keeps in touch with my friend Terry Cole.
ReplyDeleteLots of red hair? Is that the family?
spOILer: Thank you, those are kind words. I can say that I've learned a whole bunch from the other blogs so whatever I did to help out has been paid in full.
Happy Fathers day all. I just got off the phone with mine. He's almost 61 years old now, and hes working seasonally in Alberta every year. (we are Newfoundlanders of course)
ReplyDeleteMy father had a heart-attack and triple bypass surgery roughly 14 years ago.
I hope that he can soon enjoy retirement. Working everyday of his life since he was 14 years old. A fantastic human being.
LT
ReplyDeleteNo my dads name was Glenn and has black hair. I had a couple younger uncles too. A Goulet and a Roselle and Grand fathers last name who lived there is Johnson.

Happy Father's day, guys!
ReplyDeleteSleep when your kids sleep!
ReplyDeleteThe genius contained in this advice should be relentlessly drilled into expectant mothers and first-time dads repeatedly. It would probably save large numbers of marriages.
Damn, Doogie. How did you know about my back lawn?
ReplyDeleteQuantum entanglement with my own, I would assume. ;)
LT.
ReplyDeleteAs a dad whose son also wanted to attend VFS, I can relate.
My son took an alternate and much cheaper route and has been working in the industry for ten years in Vancouver.
In fact, he called me this morning to wish me happy father's day and announce he just signed on for production of the full season of "V".
Let me know if you or your son would like to talk to him since he knows the industry inside and out.
He's also an Edmonton boy and huge Oiler fan.
Happy Father's Day everyone!
ReplyDeleteLT,
One of my friends went to Capilano University in Vancouver for film. Tuition is about half that of VFS with comparable quality of teaching. Lots of the teachers have been working in the industry forever, really smart and yada yada yada...
Anyways my pal's really glad he went there instead of VFS, and is living and working in Vancouver in the industry now. So that could be something you and your son could look into.
As well, thank you very much for this blog. It's a treat to read :-)
