This is Mike Remmerde. He's a scout for Redline Report and the absolute best source for WHL players eligible for each season's draft. When he starts typing, we should listen.
Remmerede has fired up the Smith-Corona. It is a very good day.
Traktor: It is a great one. I found it awhile back (and posted it), one the main reasons being that Kirk Luedeke sometimes has Remmerde (and Woodlief) give input on his blog.
For Edmonton listeners, Luedeke gained some recognition over the years as a John Short contact when stories broke involving the Bruins, etc. He can also be found at New England Hockey Journal.

Considering he will be playing for Windsor Spitfires next year he might be adding Memorial Cup to that list as well.
anyone here think about which $1million ufa's the Oilers should chase this summer to fill out the roster? no big names, no stars, just players that can help while the young stars develop. I would love to see MPS spend the year in the SEL or AHL. LT is right that sadly he is probably the second best LW right now, although Cogliano can play well there sometimes.
Two left wingers that could play second or third line just to add some veteran grit with some skill and size, would be Raffi Torres and Tayler Pyatt.
For the fourth line I would go after Ben Eager, with Jim Slater at fourth line center. He is 27, a late first rounder in 2002, and a 58% faceoff percentage playing third line behind Marty Reasoner in Atlanta. If he is on the fourth line with Eager and Stortini, and kills penalties, he would be an excellent depth roll player.
Vic Ferrari did a very disturbing scattergram last week showing which players on the oilers were on the ice for 50% scoring chances for versus against, only Penner and Hemsky were above the 50% mark with Gagner close by, and strangely Stone right up there as well. Surprisingly Pouliot was right at the bottom along with Moreau, O'Sullivan and Jacques. THis tells me to replace Poulio with Slater, and pencil in Poulio as the number 13 forward.
So for me Pyatt, Eager, and Slater for the bottom six, with Pyatt possibly on the second line in a Penner type roll. Pyatt did score 23 goals in Vancouver one year and is a notorious plus player in his career.
I know many would like the Oilers to sign Konopka, but I doubt Tampa lets him go, and at center if he can't skate what good is he? Bring in Slater who can actually play and kill penalties, and Eager to fight for you. Eager and Stortini can both play 8 minutes a night and not hurt you.
One other alternative to Slater would be Josef Vasicek in the KHL. 30 years old this year, 55% faceoff percentage in his career in the nHL, and a plus player on a crap Islander team two seasons ago. 6'5 he brings some size, and a czeck to make Hemsky happy.
One last idea for fourth line center is Boyd Gordon. David Steckel was actually a healthy scratch a few times in Washington. I wonder if Gordon or Steckel could be had for Jacques and Potulny??
Who knows what the Oilers will get for Souray. Stauffer has noted that Roszival has a no trade, so don't expect him here anytime soon, and Big Bob has suggested the Oilers do a three way with Columbus sending Souray to the Rags, Roszical to Columbus, and Commodore here. That would work for me. Until the Souray situation is worked out, the d is useless to speculate about, although what do folks here think about Milan Jurcina or Raddy Klesla in Columbus??
I think Vic would be the first to say that Stone and Pouliot don't have the sample size to draw conclusions from that plot. Not to mention the team's scoring chance rate was much higher when Stone was healthly and much lower when Pouliot showed up (and I'm sure we can agree neither was the cause). I'm guessing he put them there just to be complete.
Traktor: yes, impressive resume, but unless you're drafting a Luongo, is there any logic to drafting a goalie in the top five, if not the first round?
NHL teams drafting goalies is a lot like NFL teams drafting running backs, in that you can get some pretty damn good ones late, and the truly "elite" ones that justify a high draft pick don't come along often (i.e. there's not much to separate the 6th best goalie from the 20th best goalie in the league.
Is Campbell THAT good? Your mileage may vary, but I'm still very undecided on that.
With all that being said, he won't last the top dozen picks....

I'm still waiting to see how many teams pick up a flyer on Svatos this summer. Curious to see where he ends up price wise.

id draft hall then go on a holiday

ReplyDeleteI wouldn't draft a goalie in the first round never mind the top 3.
Campbell is that good though. Whoever drafts him is getting a special player.
