Ted Harris played for the North Stars toward the end of his career. Harris and John Ferguson (the elder) had a big impact on 1960's hockey. The Habs kept getting beat up by the Bruins and other, more physical players so the Habs went about the task of finding three men who could do 2 things: enforce, and play.
Harris, Ferguson and Terry Harper (already in the system) changed the way Montreal approached games and the Stanley drought (Hawks in '61, Leafs in '62, '63 and '64) ended when the freewheeling returned. I wonder if the Oilers could find two tough guys who could actually play between now and the fall?
EDIT TO ADD: Linus Omark signed today. 800k per year, 2 years and an $80,000 signing bonus. More on this later, suffice to say we have our new Schremp.

ReplyDeleteOmark is more gritty than Schremp. His offense comes from the high traffic areas, which doesnt bode well for NHL success. A guy his size, against NHL defensemen, is a long hard road, night after night.

ReplyDeleteI personally am happy with the Omark signing. At the very least we get to see him in the NA game and end the youtube existence that has been plaguing us. And if he outplays his contract, puts up numbers here or even gives some more trading options this summer, all the better.
The question of the day is if he plays one of the remaining games or if we wait until TC to see him live.

I expect that they gave Omark assurances that he'll get every chance top make the big squad, and if he's sent to the AHL he may be loaned back to the KHL (ala Filatov). He's played against men and done OK, so he may be good enought to make our squad next year. But only if we move a lot of other smurfs. Maybe we'll see the newest signings on a line next year (our new 4th line kid line)

Personally I would prefer Seguin, but I really think they'll go with the flashier Hall. And I expect them to purge some guys like Nilsson, O'Sullivan, Moreau and Cogliano. You can get some value from some of them, but we can't add an Omark and have the same amount of smurfs. you know Quinn wants knuckle draggers, so I expect tambellini to clear the sub 6'0 ft guys, and find a new home for Moreau.

you could piece together a group of lines that are hopefully not too small or soft. A lot of that depends on the 3rd line, though, you can't just toss together Cogs/POS/Nilsson/Comrie and expect it to work. Tambo might have to actually do something this year.
I think no matter what happens we're not seeing MPS or Lander next year.
The Omark signing might push Eberle down to the minors, at least for the beginning of the season. And I don't see that as a bad thing.

The 3-line wingers are going to be key to this team's success. If we can find two of them (oh, and some goaltending, you need that in the "New" NHL), the team might stand a chance.
TSN reports that there is an out clause for the 2nd year. That indicates that Omark might be willing to tough it out this year, maybe play in the AHL, and then see if he can work his way into the NHL lineup. If he can't after a full season he can exercise his escape clause and do as he pleases.

Hall/Seguin is a first pick, Gagner on his 4th season, and MPS at 20 with 2 seasons with man. Eberle is already rocking the AHL (Sample size sure, but he's kickin').
If Jamie Benn can do it, i see no reason why Eberle couldn't.
FPB, you keep them in the AHL to protect them. The pace is slower there and they can acclimate better and it will help their development. If you rush them to the NHL, even if they are better than some roster players (*cough* Strudwick) you run the risk of them getting crushed/injured, destroying their confidence, and them losing their way.
ReplyDeleteSee how San Jose rushed Marleau and Friesen into the NHL and adversely affected the development of both. Heck look at Brule, and how Columbus botched his development.
Leave them in the AHL, let them master one level at a time, incrementing them up till they're ready for the big time. Let's say you're at basic level Calculus, but the advanced level Calculus class is full of idiots. Do you want to stay at basic level Calculus till you're up to speed and have it down pat, then be moved up to advanced level Calculus? Or do you want to be given advanced level Calculus right of the go because no one else is as smart as you? Think you'll succeed more quickly, or lose your way and struggle a great deal longer? Which is better for development? There's a reason why they don't break out advanced math right after you leave elementary school, and it's the same reason why players should apprentice in the AHL first. Not many people are geniuses and can skip multiple grades.
Now if they go all apeshit on the AHL and blow the doors off the hinges for a sustained period of time like Perry and Getzlaf did, then by all means bring them up if they're forcing the issue as long as you can shelter/protect them a bit in the NHL.
If Jamie Benn can do it, i see no reason why Eberle couldn't.

Dallas isn't really breaking in any other rookie forwards, and you can count on all of Morrow, Richards, Lehtinen, Modano, Eriksson, Neal and Riberio to take some of the load off. Heck, Neal and Benn are the only two forwards on their roster younger than 24 years old.

ReplyDeleteAre you kidding me? Toews/Kane were both top of the forwards in terms of percentage of OZone draws taken, had some of the best teammates, and the easier ice time. If that's not sheltering, I have no idea what is.
Christ, Kane is still taking 67% of his O/D draws in the offensive zone.

But then again i think a disparity between NHL'er and AHL'er can be quickly noticed by how they play.
Players who are not ready will most likely act like robots and use 0 creativity/personal initiative.

Vande Velde and Omark signed. Nice piece of good news. It's interesting to note that Omark gets the money he wanted from the team last year. The out-clause is a good idea I think. I wondered why they didn't try for one last year, but then again maybe he wasn't willing to accept one for less than the ELC max.

Interesting story there about your namesake. Appears he should have been a Red Wing, but they decided to hold off picking him thinking they were the only ones with the correct info on the # of games he had played in the Russian League. The Canucks then proved them wrong.

ReplyDeleteFPB: Except it's chicken and egg, Toews is apparently the top goal differential (per 60) forward in 2007, but he barely edged Robert Lang and Andrew Ladd, who didn't have the same coddling he did. Kane ranked fifth yet had the second highest O-Zone start. If Ladd/Lang swapped circumstances with Kane/Toews, I guarantee you they would have had higher goal differentials.
ReplyDeleteI'd like to see your definition of sheltering. So far, starting in the offensive zone a lot and playing against weaker opposition is treating your first line right... does Joel Quenville need to send his rookies back to the AHL on road games to qualify as sheltering?
And, for the record, I absolutely support sheltering. If Patrick Kane can't play defensve, but scores a fuckload of goals, play him in the offensive zone with good players. If Jordan Eberle has the same 'skills' then do the same thing! It's fine until you have eight players on the team who need to be treated like Patrick Kane and that's where the Oilers are.

The Oilers are terrible this year, but their road record of 8-27-4 compared to 16-19-4 at home is an indictment of the coaches.
To be fair, OTC has matched at times this year, mostly after Christmas. Was at the Vancouver game where he hard matched 18-10-34 against the Pisscutter twins and it was tied at the end of regulation. He had them jump the boards any time a Sedin even looked at the ice.
Vigneault tried to get away from it with quick changes and it made for some fine comments from the crowd around me who had no idea why the Oilers where changing lines to much.
Back to the main point, OTC has left the bad/inexperienced players on this team more exposed than a good coach would have.
He coached the way he wanted to if he had the roster he wanted. He did not coach the roster he had.
Mind you, not many could coach the roster he had.

Reminds me of 2001 when I was working in Montreal; I went to a few Expo games and just laughed at the scalpers when they asked for face price for tickets. They would chase me down and settle for the spare change in my pocket. At least I got to see Vlad belt a few out before they skipped town. Despite the temptation to do so, I still think it's too early to be projecting lineups for next year. There remain quite a few contingencies that need to be played out.
- Do we get Taylor Hall or Tyler Seguin? It might be possible that Seguin's not ready for the NHL by the time training camp comes around. Then again, maybe he is.
- Do we decide that Eberle is ready for the NHL fulltime? He might be able to play there right now, but it's probably true that he could still learn a lot from another year in the AHL.
- Who gets bought out or put in the minors? This will obviously be tied to whether it seems VDV or Omark are able to step right into the Oilers lineup.
- Who gets brought in as a signing? Another defender? Third line forward?
All in all, it certainly looks like it will be an interesting offseason, albeit a long one.

ReplyDeleteAgreed. It's one of his best ones. Keep in mind Hockey World is usually posted as two separate articles on Sundays. "Hockey World" and "More Hockey World". "More..." was equally good this past Easter.
Also, I think it should be noted that this team probably won't have success as long as Quinn is the head coach.
ReplyDeleteQuite frankly he's outdated. I've watched him quite closely at a few games this season, and there's a reason the guy rarely does or says anything on the bench to his players. He rarely deviates from rolling lines 1-4, nor do I think he matches lines on a regular basis.
I can't help but think that the reason the Oilers have only 8 road wins this year is related to the reason that Ryan Potulny is -23 on the road and Patrick O'Sullivan is -25.
In my opinion, his coaching style is a throw-back to a time when teams were either able to afford a solid (read: expensive) lineup from top to bottom or when everyone else was just rolling lines so it ended up as a wash.
It's (the real) Opening Day in MLB and Shaun Marcum has a no-no into the bottom of the 7th for the Jays. He hit Vlady with a pitch, had one other walk and had one other guy reach on an error, but so far he hasn't given up a hit.

ReplyDeleteTaylor's up 1 (assist) to nothing. The game's 2-0, and checking the shot totals suggests it isn't even close.
They had a small highlight package on TSN during the WAS-BOS intermission, Hall got absolutely rocked trying to get fancy. Got up, shook it off and is still in the game.
If this team is going to break out of its current death spiral it needs a few breaks. Omark, Petry, Vandeveld and a few other guys emerging from the non-first rounders would go a long way towards making this a competitive hockey team. Plus while most of these guys predate the Magificient Bastard era, even a blind squirrel has to occasionally find a nut...

ReplyDeleteWould it be fair to say that that is the emptiest "1-6-7 +3 in his last 8 games" in the history of pro sports. That is, at the point of the season where the Oil are playing teams that do not give a shit...... Horcoff recovers sufficiently to have a really really REALLY bad season.
Do not even want to look but suspect that the exact same argument can be made for Ethan Moreau over the last 8 games and trust me he had a really really REALLY REALLY bad season

ReplyDeleteOne thing I'm liking about Horcoff is he's embracing his role of being the new Mike Peca. Shutdown center with the counterpunch attack. Horcoff is playing some nice hockey, especially at home where he gets the matchups he can chew on.

ReplyDeleteCan you tell #10 and #18 are good buds? Horcoff's best 3 passes of the season and they're beauty feeds to Ethan in the last few minutes of tonight's game.

PDO: Agreed on all three players. Tough to tell how much of that is noise or luck, but if we want to create a narrative then let's go with they were banged up and the break is what it took for them to heal and get back in shape. Work for you? Deal.
ReplyDeleteI would guess it's a combination of puck luck (which none of them had ANY of in the first 3 quarters of the season), confidence and healing some bumps and bruises.
ReplyDeleteWe also know that Horcoff isn't dragging around JFJ any more, Cogliano is playing with skilled players, and Gilbert has meshed very well with Whitney.
I'm quite confident Gilbert's issues early in the season were OTC's wish that his D play defence first and offence second. This contrasts substantially with the interview that Fistric had on Team 1260 last week. he was talking about how Huddy coaches in Dallas now and how he pretty much lets them do their own thing and only steps in when he needs to tell them what they are doing wrong.
ReplyDeleteI'm sure it was largely a learning curve for all involves - adapting to Renney's defensive systems and having to gain the coaching staff's trust to be allowed to be more creative offensively.
If there is one thing I've learned in all these years of shitty Oilers hockey is to not read too much of what happens in the last 20 games.

The downer was I sat besides a friend who couldn't shut up about Shawn Horcoff, calling him a ''bum'' , a $7 million dollar man, and a 4th liner
