This is Neal Broten. I've always liked these old time North Star uniforms, wish the Minnesota club could bring them back. I don't mind the Wild uniforms (the new ones with the stylized spelling are quite smart) but the North Star uniforms were colorful and had some tradition.
Ted Harris played for the North Stars toward the end of his career. Harris and John Ferguson (the elder) had a big impact on 1960's hockey. The Habs kept getting beat up by the Bruins and other, more physical players so the Habs went about the task of finding three men who could do 2 things: enforce, and play.
Harris, Ferguson and Terry Harper (already in the system) changed the way Montreal approached games and the Stanley drought (Hawks in '61, Leafs in '62, '63 and '64) ended when the freewheeling returned. I wonder if the Oilers could find two tough guys who could actually play between now and the fall?
EDIT TO ADD: Linus Omark signed today. 800k per year, 2 years and an $80,000 signing bonus. More on this later, suffice to say we have our new Schremp.

Omark-Horcoff-XXXX
ReplyDeleteHorcoff is done babysitting Hemsky.
"We have our new Schremp"
ReplyDeleteI'm sure LT meant to say we now have the 'Swedish Hockey Jesus'.
Wow that's weird. You ask if they can get two guys to fill that rtoile and all of a sudden they only need one.
ReplyDeleteHappy days!
;)
So...do they try to get him in for a game or is this for next year only?
ReplyDeleteJust about made it a week without mentioning the name "Schremp".
ReplyDeleteHow tall and small is Omark? I see him listed at 5'9" 175.
ReplyDeleteYou mean "Schrimp".
ReplyDeleteMaybe he's Schremp if Schremp could skate. This kid can fly.
ReplyDeleteJeff: Fly size players have to be able to do that.
ReplyDeleteI think Omark will try out for the Oilers, but if he doesn't make the team he'll end up back in Sweden. The new transfer agreement allows for this doesn't it?
ReplyDeleteOmark is more gritty than Schremp. His offense comes from the high traffic areas, which doesnt bode well for NHL success. A guy his size, against NHL defensemen, is a long hard road, night after night.
ReplyDeleteIf he's Schremp I'll take 35-40 points for 0.8 cap hit.
ReplyDeletePlay him one game this year.
ReplyDeleteCan't be worse than Ethan Moreau.

ReplyDelete"Edmonton will give him much bigger role than he had in Kontinental hockey league. "

Welcome back BD. Hope Ireland was everything it usually is and more.
ReplyDeleteI personally am happy with the Omark signing. At the very least we get to see him in the NA game and end the youtube existence that has been plaguing us. And if he outplays his contract, puts up numbers here or even gives some more trading options this summer, all the better.
The question of the day is if he plays one of the remaining games or if we wait until TC to see him live.
Wow...I must admit I never thought we'd see the day.
ReplyDeleteShould be interesting. Hope he's our random great find.
Omark-Lander-Svensson eventually?
Woohoo! Omark, baby!
ReplyDeleteBig deal, OTC's going to hate him.
ReplyDeleteIf Quinn's still here, I don't see Omark lasting through next year's TC.
Could you define your definitions of "big" and "can play" LT?
Would Hall be a consideration for that role?
I expect that they gave Omark assurances that he'll get every chance top make the big squad, and if he's sent to the AHL he may be loaned back to the KHL (ala Filatov). He's played against men and done OK, so he may be good enought to make our squad next year. But only if we move a lot of other smurfs. Maybe we'll see the newest signings on a line next year (our new 4th line kid line)
ReplyDeleteOmark-Vande Velde-Eberle.

Personally I would prefer Seguin, but I really think they'll go with the flashier Hall. And I expect them to purge some guys like Nilsson, O'Sullivan, Moreau and Cogliano. You can get some value from some of them, but we can't add an Omark and have the same amount of smurfs. you know Quinn wants knuckle draggers, so I expect tambellini to clear the sub 6'0 ft guys, and find a new home for Moreau.
DBO: Stortini and Jones on your 3rd line?. Wut?
ReplyDeleteI expect them to purge some guys like Nilsson, O'Sullivan, Moreau and Cogliano.
ReplyDeleteWould be nice to see Cogliano's hit count the last half of the season. He sure has looked active.
I think if you lined up something like
ReplyDeleteHall-Horcoff-Hemsky
Penner-Gagner-Eberle
xxx - xxx - xxx
Omark - Pouliot - Stortini
you could piece together a group of lines that are hopefully not too small or soft. A lot of that depends on the 3rd line, though, you can't just toss together Cogs/POS/Nilsson/Comrie and expect it to work. Tambo might have to actually do something this year.
I think no matter what happens we're not seeing MPS or Lander next year.
The Omark signing might push Eberle down to the minors, at least for the beginning of the season. And I don't see that as a bad thing.
ReplyDeleteSchitzo: I like the start you've got there, but I like the chemistry Cogliano's got with Penner right now and would like to see if that translates over to next year.

The 3-line wingers are going to be key to this team's success. If we can find two of them (oh, and some goaltending, you need that in the "New" NHL), the team might stand a chance.
TSN reports that there is an out clause for the 2nd year. That indicates that Omark might be willing to tough it out this year, maybe play in the AHL, and then see if he can work his way into the NHL lineup. If he can't after a full season he can exercise his escape clause and do as he pleases.
ReplyDeleteI hope that's the case, and he doesn't mind spending 40 games or so in the AHL to get acclimated and show what he can do in a smaller rink.

ReplyDeleteI hope that's the case, and he doesn't mind spending 40 games or so in the AHL to get acclimated and show what he can do in a smaller rink.
ReplyDeleteIf that's the case then you could absolutely rotate Eberle and Omark throughout the year. Don't bring up more than one at a time, and as soon as one gets complacent switch them out.
This comment has been removed by the author.
ReplyDeletePenner seems to have "chemistry" with whomever you play him with.
ReplyDeleteSchitzo: I like the start you've got there, but I like the chemistry Cogliano's got with Penner right now and would like to see if that translates over to next year.
ReplyDeleteES Chances For/Against:
Cogliano with Penner - 66/83 44.3%
Cogliano with Moreau - 99/127 43.8%
I don't think that's chemistry that's terribly important to keep together.
(Sorry, botched adding the Dallas game.)
Why would we stack them in the AHL while the guys in the parent club just suck?
ReplyDeleteWhatever Eberle or Omark does next year, it's going to be hard to suck as much as this edition. (Yes that includes Shawn Horcoff)
Why would we stack them in the AHL while the guys in the parent club just suck?
ReplyDeleteTo prevent them from getting a sense of entitlement? To keep the number of rookies to a reasonable level? To keep the number of midgets to a reasonable level?
Schitzo: Even with all that, you expect it to be WORSE than this season?
ReplyDeleteI don't think they will have a sense of entitlement as much as being excited to play NHL hockey. Kids are still kids.
Would be fun to have a team that actually cares and has some kind of identity.
Cogs is wrapping up his third rookie season in a row.
ReplyDeleteHe's a little like Tambellini really.
FPV: I'm not worried about how well the Oilers do next season, I'm worried about wrecking the kids with high expectations. You can only shelter so many rookies at a time.
ReplyDeleteThis comment has been removed by the author.
ReplyDeleteWhat they really need are 20 guys competing for NHL forward spots next season (legit and before surprises) so that there's some urgency out there.
ReplyDeleteI'm afraid they'll take this group and trim down too far, leaving too many guys guaranteed to make it. I'm all for turning 2 or 3 iffy guys into 1 good, but I don't see them doing that.
You are aware you are not OBLIGED, to shelter rookies? Some can do it on theyr own.
ReplyDeleteToews and Kane never got sheltered in theyr first season and still did fabulous.
Hall/Seguin is a first pick, Gagner on his 4th season, and MPS at 20 with 2 seasons with man. Eberle is already rocking the AHL (Sample size sure, but he's kickin').
If Jamie Benn can do it, i see no reason why Eberle couldn't.
FPB, you keep them in the AHL to protect them. The pace is slower there and they can acclimate better and it will help their development. If you rush them to the NHL, even if they are better than some roster players (*cough* Strudwick) you run the risk of them getting crushed/injured, destroying their confidence, and them losing their way.
ReplyDeleteSee how San Jose rushed Marleau and Friesen into the NHL and adversely affected the development of both. Heck look at Brule, and how Columbus botched his development.
Leave them in the AHL, let them master one level at a time, incrementing them up till they're ready for the big time. Let's say you're at basic level Calculus, but the advanced level Calculus class is full of idiots. Do you want to stay at basic level Calculus till you're up to speed and have it down pat, then be moved up to advanced level Calculus? Or do you want to be given advanced level Calculus right of the go because no one else is as smart as you? Think you'll succeed more quickly, or lose your way and struggle a great deal longer? Which is better for development? There's a reason why they don't break out advanced math right after you leave elementary school, and it's the same reason why players should apprentice in the AHL first. Not many people are geniuses and can skip multiple grades.
Now if they go all apeshit on the AHL and blow the doors off the hinges for a sustained period of time like Perry and Getzlaf did, then by all means bring them up if they're forcing the issue as long as you can shelter/protect them a bit in the NHL.
If Jamie Benn can do it, i see no reason why Eberle couldn't.
ReplyDeleteThat's like the worst example possible. Dallas isn't really breaking in any other rookie forwards, and you can count on all of Morrow, Richards, Lehtinen, Modano, Eriksson, Neal and Riberio to take some of the load off. Heck, Neal and Benn are the only two forwards on their roster younger than 24 years old.
Toews and Kane never got sheltered in theyr first season and still did fabulous
ReplyDeleteAre you kidding me? Toews/Kane were both top of the forwards in terms of percentage of OZone draws taken, had some of the best teammates, and the easier ice time. If that's not sheltering, I have no idea what is.
Christ, Kane is still taking 67% of his O/D draws in the offensive zone.
Yes i understand the point. Just that i think a set sample of games shouldn't be the criteria.
ReplyDeleteIf they all blow the doors in AHL, then call up.
If Eberle owns his spot on the NHL club, let him be. I'm not for free passes, just saying to give Caesar what belongs to Caesar.
If they can play well, compartively to Other teams, then let them play. If it's just because theyr sucking a little less than Jason Strudwick, then yes, AHL time.
But then again i think a disparity between NHL'er and AHL'er can be quickly noticed by how they play.
Players who are not ready will most likely act like robots and use 0 creativity/personal initiative.
Quain: Yes i guess putting your top Offensive line when you have an Offensive zone faceoff makes no sense at all.
ReplyDeleteThat's called playing your strenghts, not sheltering.
They played together most of season one, so theyr QualTeam is widely affected by them both.
Toews was 5th F in QualComp and Kane 7th.
Having high QualTeam on your elite players is not sheltering.
It's having a f'in first line.
The 2008-09 section of Omark's HF profile gives the info on Rob Schremp's season in Springfield... guess you're not the only one who thinks of Omark that way
ReplyDeleteVandeVelde signing confirmed as per TSN.ca: http://tsn.ca/nhl/story/?id=316730
ReplyDeleteI purchased 4 tickets on ebay for this game for $0.12 (12 cents).
ReplyDeleteThat is NOT a typo.
What a sad state of affairs of Edmonton hockey endeavours.
FPB,
ReplyDeleteHaving 4 and 6 forwards taking tougher competition IS sheltering the alleged first line.
As for sheltering kids and playing in the AHL, did you happen to read Matheson's Hockey World yesterday?
Vande Velde and Omark signed. Nice piece of good news. It's interesting to note that Omark gets the money he wanted from the team last year. The out-clause is a good idea I think. I wondered why they didn't try for one last year, but then again maybe he wasn't willing to accept one for less than the ELC max.
ReplyDeleteI think both players end up spending the majority of next season in the A, but finish the season on the big team. Especially in light of what we know about this team and injuries.
Very excited to see what both these guys can do with their respective skillsets.
Interesting story there about your namesake. Appears he should have been a Red Wing, but they decided to hold off picking him thinking they were the only ones with the correct info on the # of games he had played in the Russian League. The Canucks then proved them wrong.
ReplyDeleteOT... Also interesting to hear that the Oil had had a possible deal in place for Pronger to the Leafs but the Leafs bailed on giving up Alex Steen who they later gave up on. Kaberle mentioned as another piece in the deal.
Sorry... *whom*
ReplyDeleteFPB: Except it's chicken and egg, Toews is apparently the top goal differential (per 60) forward in 2007, but he barely edged Robert Lang and Andrew Ladd, who didn't have the same coddling he did. Kane ranked fifth yet had the second highest O-Zone start. If Ladd/Lang swapped circumstances with Kane/Toews, I guarantee you they would have had higher goal differentials.
ReplyDeleteI'd like to see your definition of sheltering. So far, starting in the offensive zone a lot and playing against weaker opposition is treating your first line right... does Joel Quenville need to send his rookies back to the AHL on road games to qualify as sheltering?
And, for the record, I absolutely support sheltering. If Patrick Kane can't play defensve, but scores a fuckload of goals, play him in the offensive zone with good players. If Jordan Eberle has the same 'skills' then do the same thing! It's fine until you have eight players on the team who need to be treated like Patrick Kane and that's where the Oilers are.
Frick PJO
ReplyDeleteHad you asked yesterday I could have given you 2 tixs for free. Course there is not much you could fo with the .12 cents.
Lowe/Tambi.... a completely new level of professional sports mismanagement
I purchased 4 tickets on ebay for this game for $0.12 (12 cents).
ReplyDeleteYou paid money to watch the Oilers?
It's fine until you have eight players on the team who need to be treated like Patrick Kane and that's where the Oilers are.
ReplyDeleteDon't forget having a coach who refuses to shelter anyone. Roll 4 lines and damn the torpedos!!
The Oilers are terrible this year, but their road record of 8-27-4 compared to 16-19-4 at home is an indictment of the coaches.
To be fair, OTC has matched at times this year, mostly after Christmas. Was at the Vancouver game where he hard matched 18-10-34 against the Pisscutter twins and it was tied at the end of regulation. He had them jump the boards any time a Sedin even looked at the ice.
Vigneault tried to get away from it with quick changes and it made for some fine comments from the crowd around me who had no idea why the Oilers where changing lines to much.
Back to the main point, OTC has left the bad/inexperienced players on this team more exposed than a good coach would have.
He coached the way he wanted to if he had the roster he wanted. He did not coach the roster he had.
Mind you, not many could coach the roster he had.
PJO:
ReplyDeleteI would expect a limo ride and a free beer for a Oiler ticket at that price...
Reminds me of 2001 when I was working in Montreal; I went to a few Expo games and just laughed at the scalpers when they asked for face price for tickets. They would chase me down and settle for the spare change in my pocket. At least I got to see Vlad belt a few out before they skipped town. A wild a swing as you ever saw, but he found the ball with it.
TSN is listing omark as:
ReplyDelete5'11, 188-pound winger
Spoiler: That's actually a really cool article by Matheson. With respect to him, I find that those articles are pretty few and far between most years now.
ReplyDelete-----
Despite the temptation to do so, I still think it's too early to be projecting lineups for next year. There remain quite a few contingencies that need to be played out.
- Do we get Taylor Hall or Tyler Seguin? It might be possible that Seguin's not ready for the NHL by the time training camp comes around. Then again, maybe he is.
- Do we decide that Eberle is ready for the NHL fulltime? He might be able to play there right now, but it's probably true that he could still learn a lot from another year in the AHL.
- Who gets bought out or put in the minors? This will obviously be tied to whether it seems VDV or Omark are able to step right into the Oilers lineup.
- Who gets brought in as a signing? Another defender? Third line forward?
All in all, it certainly looks like it will be an interesting offseason, albeit a long one.
jon k...
ReplyDeleteAgreed. It's one of his best ones. Keep in mind Hockey World is usually posted as two separate articles on Sundays. "Hockey World" and "More Hockey World". "More..." was equally good this past Easter.
Also, I think it should be noted that this team probably won't have success as long as Quinn is the head coach.
ReplyDeleteQuite frankly he's outdated. I've watched him quite closely at a few games this season, and there's a reason the guy rarely does or says anything on the bench to his players. He rarely deviates from rolling lines 1-4, nor do I think he matches lines on a regular basis.
I can't help but think that the reason the Oilers have only 8 road wins this year is related to the reason that Ryan Potulny is -23 on the road and Patrick O'Sullivan is -25.
In my opinion, his coaching style is a throw-back to a time when teams were either able to afford a solid (read: expensive) lineup from top to bottom or when everyone else was just rolling lines so it ended up as a wash.
It's (the real) Opening Day in MLB and Shaun Marcum has a no-no into the bottom of the 7th for the Jays. He hit Vlady with a pitch, had one other walk and had one other guy reach on an error, but so far he hasn't given up a hit.
ReplyDeleteCould be the only bit of good news in what looks to be a forgettable season to be for the Jays...But, we'll be ahead of the Yankees for 1 day anyway. Somebody figure out the magic number.
This comment has been removed by the author.
ReplyDeleteDammit. Jinxed him. No-no is gone.
ReplyDeleteHoil: He once belted a pitch that hit the dirt out of the park.
ReplyDeleteThat and the one vs Texas where he hit the ball at 502 feets. I was there. Flabergasted the 7804 spectators.
Oh yeah, GDT.
ReplyDeleteLike theotherjohn, I've given away way more tickets than I've used in the 2nd half of the season.
Not going tonight either, but will see the last game Wednesday.
I can't think of a more boring game than Minnesota v. Edmonton when both teams are out of the playoffs.
*clap,clap*
Guerrero and the Rangers!
ReplyDeleteI'm on the fence about going tonight. It's my last game of the year, but it's going to be such awful hockey and it's on TSN and the beer at home is so much cheaper...
ReplyDeleteI'm going just so I can use the last of my oilers bucks, certainly not for the hockey.
ReplyDeleteKeep Quinn another year and roll JDD.
ReplyDeleteI'm all for letting the young'n's tear it up in OKC for the season and grabbing Larsson with the 1st.
I'll say one thing for the last 2 seasons, gave me a lot of extra time, and I could use more sleep next Winter as well.
Who's watching this one for sure? I think Duke's gonna blow out Butler but I'd still rather watch the basketball game.
ReplyDelete"suffice to say we have our new Schremp."
ReplyDeleteIs it a good thing or bad thing if Omark puts up more points than Horcoff next year?
Dennis,
ReplyDeleteBad match up for Butler.
Put any units on it?
I saw the line at 7 1/2 and was thinking of it since Butler is so close to home but passed.
Not quite sure how the slow white guy on Butler Hayward kept scoring but tonight at least he gets to play other slow white guys
ReplyDeleteThese last few games at 30 place, those of us who were fans now will be happy and feel wise lol
ReplyDeleteSeguin might turn out better but I want Taylor Hall he's the most like Gordie Howe lol
ReplyDeleteA buddy had to cancel at the last minute so we have an extra ticket. If anyone wants a free ticket for tonight, put your email/cell on this board and I'll contact you.
ReplyDeleteWill have to meet up outside Rexall to get that ticket to you.
I'll be checking this board until 6:05
Don't give it away, PJO, have some pride. Demand the three cents!
ReplyDeleteSince freebies and 3-cent tickets are all over the board, I have a request, if somebody has a pair of tickets for Wed. Not for me, but for my kid(s). His girlfriend has just moved out here from PEI, she's a big hockey fan but has never seen an NHL game. She had season tickets herself to the Charlottetown Rocket, and had to give away her last few games (this was all rather sudden).
ReplyDeleteI guess I could follow PJO's lead and check out eBay, but thought I would ask here first.
You can email me at bmccurdy [at] telusplanet [dot] net.
It is indeed freebie season, and I get to go both tonight and Wednesday! Just the one ticket each time or my other problem would have been solved.
Is there a full season scoring chance total on MC's site or just game by game?
ReplyDelete@Bruce:
ReplyDeleteA quick look at stubhub and you can get tickets in the nosebleeds for $12 each right now. I don't know if you want to pay FOUR HUNDRED TIMES MORE than PJO did, but hey.
Funny how the thing I remember the most about Broten was his fight with Gretz. Oh and I think he did me well in a few playoff drafts.
ReplyDeleteThanks, never heard of stubhub before, wil check it out.
ReplyDeleteGame 3 of tyler v taylor tonight.
ReplyDeleteTaylor's up 1 (assist) to nothing. The game's 2-0, and checking the shot totals suggests it isn't even close.
They had a small highlight package on TSN during the WAS-BOS intermission, Hall got absolutely rocked trying to get fancy. Got up, shook it off and is still in the game.
If this team is going to break out of its current death spiral it needs a few breaks. Omark, Petry, Vandeveld and a few other guys emerging from the non-first rounders would go a long way towards making this a competitive hockey team. Plus while most of these guys predate the Magificient Bastard era, even a blind squirrel has to occasionally find a nut...
ReplyDeleteAlso noteworthy that Plymouth started the game with Seguin's line matched against Hall's. Two shifts hemmed in the Plymouth zone later, one resulting in a goal on a Hall pass, and that doesn't appear to be the case anymore.
ReplyDeleteOdd little tidbit, but both guys signed today were 4th round 97th overall picks in 2005 and 2007 respectively.
ReplyDeleteI just hope the Oilers ignore the urge to whale hunt for a Kovalchuk and wait until the big fish are signed and most teams are up against the cap and try and entice the Tanguays, Malholtras, and Betts of the world who are looking for work to come here for a year and keep a bunch of the rooks down.
ReplyDeleteI'm cool with Omark getting a shot with the big club. He's got his at bats in AAA already.
WG: I teased the line down to -4.5 for Duke and parlayed it with the Mariners by -1.5 runs just to make it a bit more interesting.
ReplyDeleteDennis,
ReplyDeleteI wouldn't expect anything less from you.
Add a second assist to Hall's night, both assists of the primary variety, the first at even strength and the second on the PP.
ReplyDeleteThe Taylor Halls beat the Tyler Seguins again tonight, 5-0. Windsor's up 3-0 in the series, meaning our braintrust will likely have only have one more game this year to view Tyler.
God I love the siren Washington's got after goals.
ReplyDelete30 goals for Dustin Penner!
ReplyDeleteGreat feed from Chorney.
Even though he got jumped by Scott after, Arsene left his feet to make that hit. He should have been penalized for that too.
ReplyDelete13 shorthanded goals against now on Moreau's goal for the Wild this year.
ReplyDeleteJacques Lemaire is cackling like a crazy man.
Did McKenzie say he had some inside dirt on the Tyler/Taylor duel for one of the intermissions?
ReplyDeleteit sounded like he was going to say something and then he didnt, so one would guess it'll be between periods two and three. My bet would be "Seguin is a guy scouts believe has more room to grow."
ReplyDeleteIs Jukes a pro prospect? He's a pretty good college player right bloody now.
This is a pretty good basketball game.
ReplyDeletefantastic game.
ReplyDeleteHistorically, since i was a kid ive cheered for Duke, but definitely hoping for an upset here.
Let the dramatics unfold.
If Butler can come back from 5 behind at this point in the game we can pretty much say they're the equal of the Boise State football team the other year.
ReplyDeletePond hockey.
ReplyDeletewow Butler are missing a lot of close put ins.
ReplyDeletedid MacKenzie have anything interesting to say during the break??
ReplyDeleteWell, apparently Omark's first name is Leenus. As in "rhymes with Penis."
ReplyDeletethese kids have ice in their veins
ReplyDeleteThe panel, including McKenzie, said nothing that anyone who reads this blog wouldn't know.
ReplyDeleteI'm sure its new information to everyone who only gets their info from the MSM.
Mentioned Hall/Seguinn MPS, Omark, and Eberle.
No mention of VV or Petry.
I saw a bit of the POS interview on the way to the dressing room and I think he's medicated. Seriously.
Butler is losing this game on the glass.
Where has Butler been hiding Howard all game?
ReplyDeleteCardiac kids
ReplyDeleteButler is going to be death of me.
ReplyDelete1 point game... 13.6 left... wow
ReplyDeleteWhat a nice Basketball game.
ReplyDeleteLet's go for the buzzer beater
Ready for the big thing.... then timeout.
ReplyDeleteFucking Duke.
ReplyDeleteThought he had it.
ReplyDeleteFuck.
wow.
ReplyDeleteOh... look. EDM vs MIN, 2-1 (3rd)
ReplyDeleteChorney has amazing good offensive instincts and amazing bad defensive instincts.
ReplyDeleteJesus christ I teased that line down to -4.5 and still didn't win and don't get me started on what that crazy finish last night in Van did to me.
ReplyDeleteWG: Howard was in foul trouble very early on so he got the pine.
lol.. just had about 45 secs of air on the TSN feed with ferarros mic, and he didnt know he was live... commended the camera guys for putting a very nice looking young lady on air
ReplyDeletehttp://atdhe.net/16809/watch-minnesota-wild-vs-edmonton-oilers
ReplyDeleteguys watch this, we are getting off-air mic talking... talking about women and beer
Horcoff is now 1-6-7 +3 in his last 8 games.
ReplyDeletewas the bonus audio on TSN as well? or were u ppl getting commercials?
ReplyDeleteGeez, almost a hatrick for thecaptain
ReplyDeletelol they put teh same 2 girls on again, and ferarro says 'these two wont be splitting atoms anytime soon'
ReplyDeleteDP!!
ReplyDeleteYeah for Penner. One of the few good reasons to watch this game.
ReplyDeleteLT
ReplyDeleteWould it be fair to say that that is the emptiest "1-6-7 +3 in his last 8 games" in the history of pro sports. That is, at the point of the season where the Oil are playing teams that do not give a shit...... Horcoff recovers sufficiently to have a really really REALLY bad season.
Do not even want to look but suspect that the exact same argument can be made for Ethan Moreau over the last 8 games and trust me he had a really really REALLY REALLY bad season
Roughing on Nilsson much?
ReplyDeleteOne thing I'm liking about Horcoff is he's embracing his role of being the new Mike Peca. Shutdown center with the counterpunch attack. Horcoff is playing some nice hockey, especially at home where he gets the matchups he can chew on.
ReplyDeleteGilbert, Horcoff and Cogliano have all played a lot better since the Olympic break.
ReplyDeleteCan you tell #10 and #18 are good buds? Horcoff's best 3 passes of the season and they're beauty feeds to Ethan in the last few minutes of tonight's game.
ReplyDeleteEven Mike Peca would look like trash at 5M$.
ReplyDeleteHe's not going to cover his bet any day soon.
But if we can't trade or give him away. Might as well encourage him.
Go Horcoff Go.
fpb: Don't be dissing on Horcov now.
ReplyDeleteGilbert:
ReplyDelete18 GP 2G 13A +4
Horcoff:
18 GP 3G 9A +1
Cogliano:
18 GP 4G 8A +2
PDO: Agreed on all three players. Tough to tell how much of that is noise or luck, but if we want to create a narrative then let's go with they were banged up and the break is what it took for them to heal and get back in shape. Work for you? Deal.
ReplyDeleteI would guess it's a combination of puck luck (which none of them had ANY of in the first 3 quarters of the season), confidence and healing some bumps and bruises.
ReplyDeleteWe also know that Horcoff isn't dragging around JFJ any more, Cogliano is playing with skilled players, and Gilbert has meshed very well with Whitney.
I'm quite confident Gilbert's issues early in the season were OTC's wish that his D play defence first and offence second. This contrasts substantially with the interview that Fistric had on Team 1260 last week. he was talking about how Huddy coaches in Dallas now and how he pretty much lets them do their own thing and only steps in when he needs to tell them what they are doing wrong.
ReplyDeleteI'm sure it was largely a learning curve for all involves - adapting to Renney's defensive systems and having to gain the coaching staff's trust to be allowed to be more creative offensively.
If there is one thing I've learned in all these years of shitty Oilers hockey is to not read too much of what happens in the last 20 games.
ReplyDeletePDO,
ReplyDeleteDid you calculate that manually, or do you have tool that grabs that data if you give it parameters?
WG:
ReplyDeleteJust quickly did it myself.
Fuck is Tencer ever an asshole. He's ragging on Penner for not being "accommodating to the fans" because he was giving one-word answers to Tencer's interview.
ReplyDeleteYou've kicked him for the last two years, you fucking shill. Now he's supposed to be nice to you?
Maybe someone should clue Tencer in that no one can stand him and Penner giving him nothing is actually more enjoyable than a shitty interview.
ReplyDeleteStauffer called him out on it and suggested it was personal. Tencer didn't seem too pleased.
ReplyDeleteSmarmy, good point. We've seen this act before.
ReplyDeleteI'll take it a step further. These guys that turn it on on the last 20 games piss me off more than give me optimism for next year.
So you can play like we thought you could hey? Well, Where the F was that game from Oct - Feb?
Great, so you can play when there's no pressure. You should be great in the playoffs then.
If they're still bringin' it in the dog days of January then I'll get excited.
Looked to me like PJO got his 3 cents worth tonight.
ReplyDeleteWith as much reference as there was to Omark, I would have thought the pundits could have weighed in with some VV chatter.
Looked to me like PJO got his 3 cents worth tonight.
ReplyDeleteAbsolutely.
The downer was I sat besides a friend who couldn't shut up about Shawn Horcoff, calling him a ''bum'' , a $7 million dollar man, and a 4th liner
Sigh.
Another game, another 50-50 winner from the bedroom leeching communities that are St. Albert and Sherwoord Park.
Double sigh.
I was at one game this year and they announced that the 50/50 was from Ontario.
ReplyDeleteA lot of people "booed"
They boo Horcoff and they boo "foreign" 50/50 winners.
Awesome.
