Omark Leaves KHL. Where to?

Word yesterday that Linus Omark is leaving the KHL after one season. The youtube superstar might be headed for Edmonton, although it will be a two-way deal (as required by the CBA) and time in Okla City is possible.

Should Omark sign with the Oilers, it would add another minute man to the group. The idea that the big club might start 10-11 with all of Sam Gagner, Andrew Cogliano, Patrick O'Sullivan, Mike Comrie, Robert Nilsson and Omark seems unreasonable.

However, Omark's Desjardins' NHLE suggests he is NHL ready. The plot thickens.

Well if it is unreasonable then I guess its just about a sure thing innit? ;p

  2. And Brule, don't forget Brule.

    And maybe Eberle.

Its like we've landed in Munchkinland. Follow the Yellow Brick Road!

Although my guess is Nilsson, POS and Comrie are probably all gone or at least the first two.

  3. I wonder if that means we see him before the end of this season?

Honestly how could this team be worse with him in the line-up and it might show us who he really is.

And if he does well enough then he becomes even more valuable as a possible trading piece at the draft.

  4. We could also be assembling a VERY interesting group of forwards that make this year's Colorado Avalanche look peanuts. If many of them show up to the dance ready to rock and roll, it could be something special.

    Just a thought.

  5. Comrie, POS, and Nilsson won't be here next year.

  6. Jeff: I wouldn't cry if all 3 of Comrie, POS or Nilsson were gone - but think it will be interesting to see how motivated Nilsson and POS are since they are in their contract years.

Might be a gamble worth taking for some team (hopefully not us).

  7. As far as the smurfs go here are my predictions:

POS will be dumped or bought out
Nillson will be dumped or bought out
    Comrie will not be resigned
    Brule will be resigned
    Gagner will be resigned
Eberle will make the big team out of training camp

If we draft Seguin, then I think Cogs will be traded

    Cogs to Ott for B.Lee

Omark will be paired with Souray as trade bait

Souray and Omark to Dall for Fistric

    Those would be my predictions

  8. Comrie, POS, and Nilsson won't be here next year.

    You are correct sir.

Cogliano (1Hit/GM)and Brule(1.85) have not been playing small.
Penner-Cogliano-Brule is not a Small line.

Horcoff-Pisani(1.2H/GM) is a great shutdown pair. Omark would be offensive generater on the left of that line.

A Gagner-Hemsky pair could face the second level with the correct left winger.

Horcoff/Brule will not be on the PP so roll there PP minutes to Ev in soft Comp role with the young guys, who will get prime PP time.

    XXX-Gagner(2.4M)-Hemsky(4.1M)
    Omark(.9M)-Horcoff(5.5)-Pisani(1M)
    Penner(4.25)-Cogliano(??)-Brule(??)
    Hall/Stortini-XXX-Eberle/Stortini
    Reddox And Stone

Quality Contract of a LW will Be dependent on Qualified Contracts of RFA's

  9. Black Dog: Thanks for the Munchkinland comment... now I have a vision of Nilsson, POS and Comrie singing "We represent the lollipop guild" stuck in my head.

Anyhoo... Is it just me or does it seem like the Oilers are starting to seriously show signs they are going to be building from the bottom up?
They are moving the farm team to OC and may need to show a semi serious contender for the first season there.
If they seriously keep Eberle in the AHL and also decide that Omark goes there as well as the other players from Europe (MPS, Lander and Motin), N.A. (Nash, Petry, Plante and perhaps Dee) and the draft (Hall/Sequin) the farm team may actually be something to talk about.

Or they can bring most of them up to the show (what I believe they will do) and they can get stomped on for the next couple of years, which will be a real confidence booster. For the fans and players alike.

  10. Being an inch shorter doesn't automatically make you a loser.

Plenty of examples of big men that play small, and the opposite, even on the Oilers.

Height does not indicate the size of your heart, and the Oilers have traded away an awful lot of heart the last few years.

Lack of height is just a convenient excuse for a bad team.

    ReplyDelete
  11. DD,

Fair enough. But most of our small players can't win puck battles, stand in front of the net, cycle the puck, take hits to make plays... you know, the things hockey players do. And I'd say those skills are rarer in guys under 5'11 or 6' than in the rest of the league.

I think you can afford to have one or two guys like that in your top 9, if the rest of the guys are winning the puck battles and the possession game. In fact, if you play a lot of time in the other team's zone, guys with slick hands and little else can get some points and help you win games.

So a top 9 with, say, Comrie and Gagner, could be great. But a top 9 with Eberle, Cogliano, Comrie, POS, Nilsson, Omark, and even Gagner is just too much.

Part of the problem is that you can bet good money on the fact that Omark and Eberle will at least start off their careers poor at everything but offense. That's just how most guys go.

    ReplyDelete
  12. Sure but Omark has a few years of pro hockey under his belt.

    ReplyDelete
  13. And Brule, don't forget Brule.

    LT always forgets Brule.

Comrie, POS, and Nilsson won't be here next year.

There's not a huge pile of statistical evidence to suggest they were here this year.

    POS = 5'11, 190, $2.925 MM
    Nilsson = 5'11, 185, $2.000 MM
    Comrie = 5'10, 185, $1.250 MM
    -----------------
    Total cap hit: $6.175 MM
    30 goals = $205 K / G
    74 points = $83 K / Pt
    78 hits = $79 K / hit
    -61 = $101 K / minus

    Ouch.

    ReplyDelete
  14. I don't understand why we have to buy out POS or Nils. I mean it wouldn't hurt to bring them to camp and then send them to OKC. First we save money on the cap because we don't have to buy them out. Then by sending them down someone might pick them up which would be great. If no one does then having two decent NHLers on the OKC team might not be so bad.

    ReplyDelete
  15. There's not a huge pile of statistical evidence to suggest they were here this year.

Interesting facts Bruce. I have felt Comrie was overrated from the get-go this year and deserved the same disdain as 12 and 19. Best to see them all off this summer for little or nothing.

  16. Question: How many smaller guys battle like Martin St. Louis? I'm all in favor of acquiring those types but the fact is that most of the Oilers smaller guys:

    1. play like smaller guys
    2. don't win puck battles
    3. duplicate each other's skills perfectly

    ReplyDelete
  17. I find the size argument interesting.

If you have a smaller player who plays soft everyone says he is too small, when the truth is he is to soft.

When you have a big player who plays soft, everyone says well at least he's not a little guy, or tries to look at their "potential".

The NHL doesn't publish team height statistics, only on individuals so I can't list all the teams who are smaller than the Oilers who finished ahead of them in the standings without alot of work.

Oilers were middleish in size last time I saw stats.

Smallest guy on the Oilers is Brule (at 5.06 I believe)

So here's the top ten scorers that are smaller than the smallest Oiler:

    Martin St Louis 87
    Patrick Kane 82
    Derek Roy 60
    Ray Whitney 55
    Michael Cammalleri 50
    Tobias Enstrom 49
    Danny Briere 49
    Steve Sullivan 47
    Saku Koivu 41
    Brian Gionta 41

10th on the list would still be 2nd on the Oilers and Penner, the Oilers top scorer is tied for 4th.

Note that this is not the highest scoring little guys in general, but only players who are smaller than the Oilers smallest player.

The Oilers problem isn't that they are little. Their problem is that they are:
    #1 in Giveaways(972)
    #1 in FaceOffs Lost(2281)
    #30 in FaceOff Percentage (46.8)

They don't have anyone that will go into the corners or stand in front of the net and battle for the puck.

    ReplyDelete
  18. LT - In response to your last note, this is where Comrie and Brule separate themselves from the pack.

Comrie plays well in the corners, makes a consistent offensive contribution and can be effective on any line. He's also not afraid to fight and in fact sometimes goes looking for it.

Brule is physical by nature and can clearly score goals. He's got a powerful shot and doesn't need to get by on his skating.

I suspect Nilsson's gone and he should be. Even if he improves from this place it won't be by much.

I'm sad that O'Sullivan will likely be gone because I truly think that he fits in on a different squad and will really produce. He doesn't pack the favorite skillset of the group around here, but he can play hockey.

The thing is, shouldn't we be able to trade some of our excess for useful players that suit our needs rather than simply casting them off? No one's saying we're going to fleece someone, but there have to be a bunch of teams out there looking for some skill.

    ReplyDelete
  19. DeeDee

Brule is listed 5'10". It is unlikely that he is that tall, but he's certainly not 5'6".

Comrie's likely the smallest on the team, but certainly doesn't play like it.

I remember towering over Bergeron, which was hilarious, but the guy was so wide that it was almost an advantage for him to be shorter.

We need one of these guys to turn into Andrei Kovalenko.

    ReplyDelete
  20. I think any team can have a couple of smaller skill forwards on their roster and be fine.

The problem becomes the sheer number of them. If Gagner is working in the corner (and he's excellent for his age/size) and over comes Robert Nilsson or Andrew Cogliano?

Well, we're not winning the battle. Too many small forwards, even if Gagner, Brule and Comrie battle hard (that's my list, I'm sure others have their own).

    ReplyDelete
  21. Smart management would deal Gagner at 95 cents on the dollar for another young player that fills a need (Luke Schenn) and then sub in an Omark without much downgrade.

Unfortunately Tambellini will probably use Omark at the draft to move up the rankings and select a college player that will never sign with us and then give Gagner a contract that he might live up to in the 4th or 5th year. Probably not though.

    ReplyDelete
  22. As everyone Says we need strength up the middle:
We need physical centers who are strong on the face off. And Can get you at least .5 PPG. A second Behind Horcoff.

Pretty Samll list Though. There are only 14 Forwards. Top 30 in Face offs (min 200) and Better than .5 p/gm:
    A. Mcdonald; A. Vermette; G. Brule; J. Stoll; J. Pavelski;
    J. Thorton; J. Toews; M. Koivu; P. Bergeron; P. Datsyuk; R. Peverley; R. Kesler; S. crosby
    S. Crosby

Wonder how many offer a physical Presence 1.75 hits/game top 60.
    J.Stoll
    G.Brule

Yeah Brule is really a guy we do not want to keep.

  23. I think we've discussed this before, but any chance Tampa wants Omark + for a high pick that could be used on something?

I know it isn't ideal; I for one really want to see if Omark's better than what we have first, but it's a possibility. We could then take Nino/Tarasenko/Granlund and come away looking solid. Or a ginormous defenceman if that's the preference.

  25. Traktor - to trade Gagner a potential #1 center who is AT WORST a #2 center on most teams in the league for luke schenn, whose career potential tops out at #3-4 shutdown D with absolutely zero offence if he's lucky is crazy.

  26. RE: Brule is listed 5'10".

My bad, I sorted the stats by height and grabbed everything up to the first Oiler.

All the players I listed are shorter though.

It sure helps when the players have some sort of consistancy, being taller doesn't help much when you play like Alexei Yashin half the time.

But I suppose thats better than playing like Yashin ALL of the time.

But I certainly agree with you Lowetide, that when you have giant gaping holes in your lineup no amount of bandaids are going to fix it.

    Last post From NCAA Desjardins.

// He's (hall) been in the spotlight for four or so years now and been performing. He has that track record people like to see.

Come on Smarmy. No one likes to look at track record. Remember everyone wants to trade Omark and he trends like, Sedins, Forsburg, and naslund in his last SEL year. His U23 KHLgoal scoring year trends like Kovulchuk, Ovechkin, Malkin, Frolov, and Kulemin.

I say trade the first overall pick to make all the guys who want to trade Omark feel better. //

But weren't you the guy saying Nilsson would have a great or at least very good year? Didn't you argue for that along similiar lines, by looking Nilsson's 2007-2008 offensive numbers without enought of context.

In fact, you said 60 point men do not get packaged up. They are the package.

Taking Nilssons 07-08 EV numbers playing 2nd line minutes 12:30 TOI
    gets you 39 EV points.

Taking Nilssons 08-09 PP numbers playing 2nd line minutes 2:30 TOI
    gets you 16 PP points.

His goal rates say a 15G 40A best case so far.

    Though 40 Assists?
I have allways liked first assists as an identifier. He was the tenth best set-up man in the league in 07-08. Right there with Malkin and Ribeiro.

Again, I don't mean to be a jerk, but the way you go about evaluating players in the post above seems like a good way to be mislead, just as it did with Nilsson. It's all too driven boxcar results without any sort of mention of quality of competition or puck luck.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Ricki - not a single guy on that list is as small as Omark. Forsberg and the Sedins made it work on NHL ice, but we have very little info one way or the other as to whether Omark will be able to do so.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Heck, if you want an example of a smaller guy with good SEL numbers, Patrick Thoresen had a couple of very comparable seasons (although I believe he was a year or two older).

Agree 100%, buying out is chicken shit.

If no one want to give you a 5th rounder for these guys, then let them have a crack at waivers on the way down.

Afraid you'll be on the hook for 1/2 on re-entry? Easy, don't recall them.

Burying salary in the minors is supposed to be one of the perks of having a billionaire owner.

  33. If no one want to give you a 5th rounder for these guys, then let them have a crack at waivers on the way down.

The problem with trading them is that you are likely getting back salary problem for salary problem. And what the team needs next year is low cap and less players, especially problem players with high cap hits. Buyout is more palatable because you only have 1/3 of the salary to pay rather than the 1/2 that recall gets you (if I remember the numbers that my betters have crunched here).

Still, see what you can get for them before the buyout deadline, but if it means warm bodies back that are not going to help the team, buy them out.

Schitzo you are correct. A valuable lesson was learned. Do not put Faith in no pressure out of the playoffs point surges for one season.

I was wrong to hope nilsson's 07-08 numbers were the real markers.

    But come on: Omark
    1. one of 14 in Sel history. To be top 10 scoring at U22.
    2. One of a hand full to score in the KHL/SEL in the last 15 years @ U23.
    3.Top 30 in 2007 WJC scoring Swedens #2 scorer.
    4.Top 10 in 2009 WHC scoring top 15 in +/-. Swedens #2 scorer.

All before he turns 23. You know when core strength has naturally finnished developing. With another 5 years of physical development.

I keep Gagner, Eberle, Omark, each on seperate lines. Brule and Cogliano as a speed pair seperate from the other three lines.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Schitzo you are correct

As much as I love accepting praise, I think that you're addressing the wrong person.

It's ok though, I get told that a lot. :)

    ReplyDelete
  36. Omark is the next Nilsson/ Schremp. If he had any grit we would have heard about it. Instead we hear about his high end skill.

I think if they were to keep Gagner, Cogs and Brule as the munchkin quota that would work.

Ideally they keep Eberle and Omark on the farm to learn some defence.

Comrie is a nice story but he is easy to drop.

I think its worth holding onto one of Nilsson or POS as a 13th forward for the ineveitable injury to a top 6 player or as a sub against less physical teams. This saves calling up guys and impacting their development, and keeps those ahead of him working hard.

They are already paying them and 35 to 40 points is still worth something (heck it might be all the #1 draft can muster in year 1). Maybe if they are playing for a contract in 2011/12 they will have that career year so many players have.

    ReplyDelete
  37. RB - Good call on the right post.

I should clarify (though I think I already did) that I want to see what Omark can do; but if they're hellbent on him not playing, please don't just flush the guy and have him go Vyborny++ on us.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Bar Qu,

If you are correct and you have to take salary back from a trade, then just ship them to the OKC.

If you buy out POS, its a 937K cap hit this year and 397K next year.

You gain 1.6MM in actual $$, but still lose the above cap hits.

Buying out Nilsson is the most attractive. According to CapGeek he only costs 416K in cap in 11/12, and actually adds cap space in 10/11.

Buying out Moreau is a cap hit of 666K (not a coincidence) each year for two years.

So I'd rather pay these guys full salary in the minors and not lose any cap hit if I'm a billionaire owner.

Buying out Nilsson is attractively cheap though, probably just do that.

If we use 18 and 19 are our two *maybe* guys we see this:

    Moreau: Actual $$$ saved:$333K
Cost in cap hit: 666K 10/11 and 11/12.

Synopsis: Not enough actual $$ savings and loss of cap. Either tell him to retire and you'll hire his as a scout for $2MM next year, or he rides the bus in OKC.

    POS: Actual $$$ saved: $1.6MM
    Cost in cap hit $935K 10/11, 397K 11/12

Synopis: If $1.6MM is more important to owner ship that the 1.3MM aggregate loss in cap space then buy him out. If I have Katz's credit line, I bury him in OKC if I can't find a taker without getting shit back in return.

I'd probably buy out 12 give his awesome buyout status of gaining $1.6M, but only losing $416K in cap in 11/12, and actually gaining $83K in cap this year.

  39. Just tossing it out there, but would it make more sense to throw out an offer sheet at Gustavsson?

Anything under 3 million it's a 2nd rounder, and he'd make it very easy to cut bait on JDD. Plus, it'd give us another 18 months of Burke blowing his stack.

  41. Burying salary in the minors is supposed to be one of the perks of having a billionaire owner.

Fair enough. But, you know, a billion is only 1 thousand millions. If you only had 1000 dollars to your name, would you spend two of them to bench POS in the AHL? I know I'd rather spend 2 million bucks on buildinga giant Nelson Muntz robot to walk to Calgary, where it would keep going "Ha Ha!" "Ha Ha!"

    ---

    Oh and Ricki,

I love your comments. I sounded more critical than I meant to be. And fair points on Omark all around. But isn't it true that many players that small can't play well at the NHL level, even if they can produce in other leagues and junior? If so, is that a inconsequential, fairly important, or really major knock on Omark? It was sure as hell a problem with softy-softerson Nilsson

    ReplyDelete

  44. I think that's an automatch by Burkie, so no need to do it really.

Yeah, it might be. But they're at 48.7 million next year with only 15 players signed.

Granted, more than 5 million of that is bonuses (how the hell did Bozak command 3.75 million, BTW?). But if he addresses his forwards before his goaltending, they might be very tight to get it done.

  46. I'm hoping that Omark establishes himself on the Oilers as a legitimate top 6 scorer as much as the next guy.

Assuming off that Omark is as good as Gagner in the NHL right now, not to speak of projected potential, and that the latter should be traded, however, is just ludicrous.

  47. Kris,

But he's supposedly worth 2.34B, so he can spend that dough, and still be worth 2.34B.

Hell, throw in 2 Muntzobots (one for Vancouver after they get bounced), and he's still work 2.34B

Shit, he could do it all 3 times (including the double Mutzobots) before he's only worth 2.33B.

The 4th incarnation of GM Tambellini said that Batman has given him "every option" to make this team better.

He should used them to maximum cap advantage if the blank check is signed.

No, he was pressed really hard to the cap after re-signing Getzlaf and Perry.

He has way more cap room now Toronto than he did in Anaheim (that's the season he had to waive Bryzgalov) and you aren't going to offer Gust 4.5MM.

people suggesting it's chicken shit to buy guys out rather than send them to the minors, have to evaluate that position with regards to their complaints about season ticket prices. leaving 6m in the minors is a cap solution, but it's still money that the team is spending and needs to recoup in order to balance the books. since the lockout, most of that "recouping" has happened through increased ticket and merch costs.

so pick your poison, but an extra 6 million on the books equates $5 more per ticket per game. sounds like bad business and fan piss off, to me.

Nah, he deserves disdain proportionate with his contract, so just 5/8 the disdain of Nilsson and 1250/2925th the disdain of POS. :)

    Then there's this:

    O'Sullivan: $2.925 MM, -33
    Nilsson: $2.000 MM, -19
    Comrie: $1.250 MM, -9

    That's fairly proportionate too.

Question: How many smaller guys battle like Martin St. Louis?

LT: Very, very few. (In fact you can remove the word "smaller" and the answer would be the same.) It's my observation that many of the little guys who have succeeded are exceptional battlers (e.g. St.Louis, Gionta, Fleury, Ronning). High levels of speed, skill, and smarts also enter into the equation of course, but players who are small and have a below-average compete level don't just have two strikes against them, they have an 0-2 count, with Steve Carlton on the hill.

Well, we're not winning the battle.

LT: 100% agreed, that has been a concern of mine for some years now.

Too many small forwards, even if Gagner, Brule and Comrie battle hard (that's my list, I'm sure others have their own).

My list is pretty similar, maybe + Cogs. My list of smurfs worth keeping is pretty much the same list. Interesting that those guys are all up for contract renewal, while the ultrasofts are locked up for another year. :(

  58. people suggesting it's chicken shit to buy guys out rather than send them to the minors, have to evaluate that position with regards to their complaints about season ticket prices.

I said chicken shit, and I have not complained about ticket prices. Wrong pot shot at the wrong guy.

I have complained about the beer price vis a vi quality and temperature and paying $12 to walk 12 blocks to the rink, but never complained about the ticket price.

    Also,

Batman is supposed to do all this without raising ticket prices.

LaForge can say they are losing money all he wants, but this is the same guy who said the ball club lost money because they did not recoup the entire purchase price of the club in one season.

This can be done without raising ticket prices, which I have not whined about.

  59. @woodguy...

it wasn't a potshot...don't know why you'd take it as such.

the fact is that placing salary in the minors has a very real effect on the day to day price gouging that the oiler's franchise is going to delivery downstream to the fans. perhaps it's not tickets, but instead beer or nacho prices...tickets was a very easy example to lay it all out -- i don't know for instance how many beers or jerseys are sold and as a result the direct $ change of all those...

i still think the point is valid.

  60. Jon: In one of the early posts on this thread, I think you got it 100% right.

Does anyone know the status of Van de Velde? Is he signing soon?

  61. Jfy,

Sorry if I took it wrong, it looked like a pot shot.

Agree that the $$$ has to come from somewhere, but were we not to worry about that once a billionaire bought the team?

He overpaid significantly for this team (if the published price is to be believed)

I don't think he bought it as a profit center.

At least until he convinces someone to build him a rink.

  63. my list is also Gagner, Brule and Comrie.

i can't believe some of the flack Comrie has been getting lately. Bruce lays it out pretty well:

    O'Sullivan: $2.925 MM, -33
    Nilsson: $2.000 MM, -19
    Comrie: $1.250 MM, -9

.. and Comrie played quite a few games battling illness this year atop that.

the guy defines "value contract", is not a physical liability, and is entertaining as hell especially when he fights.

if the oilers are going to continue losing, having relatively inexpensive contracts with local talent that provide entertainment value, put up a few points and play gritty, exciting hockey are the way to go.

i like Cogliano, but i think he's tradable so we should trade him because we have other players who duplicated his skill set and have a better touch around the net. he has a reputation for speed which will help us trade him, so move him somewhere he can succeed and get some defense and/or size in return.

keep Gagner, Brule and Comrie. Move/Bury Cogliano, Nilsson and POS.

tho i'm curious if anyone thinks Comrie should be moved instead of Pouliot. i've always viewed Comrie less in competition with the smurfs, and more with MAP.

  64. You buy out Nilsson and O'Sullivan because

    1) they are 1/3rd of remaining salary buyouts, which is even cheaper than waiver recalls. The owner saves $3 million dollars, that can be spent on real players.
    2) you don't want them in Oklahoma contaminating your prized prospects
    3) you want to free up contracts under the 50 limit.
    4) minimal cap hts
    5) organization reputation. Players look at how you treat other players. Burying players should be a last resort.

Most of the above also apply to Moreau, except he is a 2/3rds buyout.

  65. O'Sullivan: $2.925 MM, -33
    Nilsson: $2.000 MM, -19
    Comrie: $1.250 MM, -9

Since they didn't play an equal amount of games, it should be weighted, no?

    O'Sullivan: $2.925 MM, -0.493 /game
    Nilsson: $2.000 MM, -0.333 /game
    Comrie: $1.250 MM, -0.250 /game

Comrie still has the best number here, but it's much closer than you make it seem.

  66. Godot: Not quite sure why you think Nilsson or O'Sullivan might "contaminate" anyone.

That said, I'd rather find another team for those guys. I think most people see them as NHLers, however redundant they may be on this team. They might be a better fit as a smaller fish in a bigger pond.

  68. Since they didn't play an equal amount of games, it should be weighted, no?

Boondock: Mostly I was just jacking around when I wrote that. But if you really want to weight them, use Behind the Net.

    Comrie -1.27/60
    Nilsson -1.32/60
    O'Sullivan -1.93/60

However you slice it, that's bad, bad, and more bad.

  69. Woodguy & Jfry - Katz isn't going to pay to bury or buy out those contract by raising ticket prices, beer prices, merchandise prices or parking prices. He's already doing it by cutting the size of a large popcorn in half and charging the same amount for it. If he charged $5.50 for the old large popcorn and made $5.25 every time he sold one, now he's charging $5.50 for a popcorn and clearing $5.45.

Your Edmonton Oilers...Paying of contract mistakes 1 bucket of popcorn at a time!!
