Oilers Pick from Familiar Places

This is Andy Moog. He was selected 132nd overall in 1980, the second Oilers draft. He was the fourth WHL player selected by the club (two in 1979, Max Kostovich and Mike Toal and then Mike Winther in 1980) and is one of three truly outstanding talents drafted from the dub in the organization's history (Fuhr, Smyth).

The Oilers have grabbed WHL players at a more rapid rate since Kevin Lowe took over as General Manager. We talked earlier this week about the subtle changes in the procurement department (Prendergast bumped upstairs, Stu MacGregor the new scouting director) and wondered if the Oilers would select players from the usual leagues and countries.

As it turned out the Oilers did indeed draft from familiar leagues (WHL, QMJHL) and countries (Sweden, Finland) and in a bit of a turnaround avoided college and college bound prospects.

Here's the updated lists of picks since Lowe took over and where they came from:

  1. WHL-13 (last players drafted Eberle and Bendfeld '08)
  2. Sweden-11 (last player drafted Motin '08)
  3. QMJHL-9 (last player drafted Cornet '08)
  4. OHL-8 (last player drafted Gagner '07)
  5. USHS-5 (last player drafted VandeVelde '05)
  6. Finland-5 (last player drafted Hartikainen '08)
  7. US College-4 (last played drafted Wild '06)
  8. Czech-3 (last player drafted Hrabel '03)
  9. USHL-2 (last player drafted Petry '06)
  10. AJHL-2 (last player drafted Glasser '05)
  11. Russia-2 (last player drafted Bumagin '06)
  12. OPJHL-2 (last player drafted Cogliano '05)
  13. EJHL-1 (last player drafted McDonald '03)
  14. NAHL-1 (last player drafted Rohlfs '03)
  15. US U-18-1 (last player drafted Paukovich '04)
  16. BCJHL-1 (last player drafted Nash '07)
  17. Slovakia-1 (last player drafted Kytnar '07)

In terms of top 50 picks since 2001, the WHL dominates:

  1. WHL-6
  2. QMJHL-3
  3. USHL-2
  4. OHL-2
  5. Finland-1
  6. USHS-1
  7. OPJHL-1
  8. BCJHL-1

You'll note the Oilers 11 Swedish picks all came outside the top 50 overall. Here are GP totals by league with Ales Hemsky helping the Q kick butt:

  1. QMJHL- 510
  2. WHL- 386
  3. OHL- 222
  4. USHL- 151
  5. Finland-144
  6. OPJHL- 82
