One Was Texas Medicine, The Other Was Railroad Gin

The first real "hockey" line I remember was the Phil Esposito-Wayne Cashman-Kenny Hodge line on the great Bruins teams 70-75. Esposito played through all the lines, but he was a beauty. He could score goals from the slot like no one before or since (and that includes Tim Kerr), and was helped by Wayne Cashman's hard work (he was a Ryan Smyth-type in terms of effort, worked all night in the corners) and Hodge was a smooth winger who could pass the puck, shoot and make plays.

That was my first real memory of "lines" on an NHL team. I knew that Esposito-Cashman-Hodge was the top line on my favorite team (Boston) but a team like Toronto during the early 70s were working in some new hires and kept the best wingers for the better scorer and asked Keon to work in the new recruits. I guess you could say Horcoff is the Oilers' Keon, but for old timey Leaf fans that might stop the ol' ticker. I don't recall a line from my childhood being as famous as the Esposito line.

Lots of talk about lines today at practice. It went something like this:
  • RNH-Hall-Eberle
  • Horcoff-Smyth-Hemsky
  • Belanger-Lander-Jones
  • Gagner-Eager-Petrell
  • extra: Paajarvi
The Oilers don't play again until Thursday (against Ottawa) so there's plenty of time to work on things and this might have been a message. Still, you can see what the lineup does--gives the team a little shakeup on the 3-4 lines and perhaps gives young Lander a different view. It probably also serves as a "smelling salts" moment for young Samwise and Magnum PS.

I think the coach will swing a different way tomorrow, and suspect we either see the kid line broken up or possibly a recall of Omark with Paajarvi or Lander heading to OKC. If the Oilers come out Thursday night with the combination listed above, I'll begin to suspect Texas Medicine, Railroad gin or a combination of the two.

  1. Was it 2 years ago when Gagner was demoted at the start of the season to 4th line and it lasted all of 1 game?

By my eye he has been steadily improving since missing those early games. I don't expect him to be playing with plugs for any extended time if at all.

As you mention LT, I think this says much more about the state of affairs for PRV and Lander than Gagner.

  2. I'm seriously beginning to doubt my sanity viz anything to do with the Oilers, but the little man who lives inside my head tells me Gagner's going to be the 2nd line centre by March.

It's up to him of course, and right now he's been booted(justifiably with 0 goals) to the 4th line; however Gagner, aside from that stupid looking habit of chewing his mouthguard all the time is a very dedicated player.

WTF, this entire team is going to need another 20 games to figure itself out, possibly more.

Advice for Gagner(from the little man inside hunter1909's head): Stop chewing that mouthguard, because it makes you look like a big baby out there.

  3. hunter: I haven't noticed the mouthguard thing, but would agree with everything else. Not to be rude about the rest of the roster, but it's there for him. The wingers on this team are a dream for a centerman, good God man grab this chance to be part of a very nice decade

  4. If those lines stay as is, I'll have no choice but believe that the tank is on again after Renney decided to give the team a taste of winning.

Renney clearly knows what he is doing, but man why must he put us through this?

  5. Its fun watching Hunter slowly go insane. The extraordinary thing is that he is aware of it, and seems to be enjoying the process!

  6. Even Stauffer was openly questioning Renney vis a vi the line combos today.

  7. I suspect that if someone was actually coming up from the farm for the Thursday match that he would've been called up by now.

  8. Maybe they’re just keeping Hemsky with Horcoff-Smyth to have him generate points to improve his trade potential, but it could be they really believe he can be an important part of a second line for the next few years when Horcoff-Smyth slip to the third and this is his audition. Either way, it will help the team this year.

For my money, they’re just posturing with Gagner at center on the fourth line, allegedly giving him a chance to earn his way back but knowing he’s not in their plans as the team’s future second line center.

If they see Gagner as that future second line center, why not play him with Hemsky now and move Jones back with Horcoff-Smyth?

  9. I think I would roll out the lines this way:

    4-93-14
    94-10-28
    91-89-83
    55-20-37

I would also give that 3rd line at least 3 games together before I blended again. Getting Magnus going is a priority and Hemsky and Gagner should be able to produce points to where Magnus should at least get some cheap assists if nothing else.

  10. spOILer: I don't know. Barker's hurt, imagine someone is coming up, why not two players? Seems reasonable to me.

  11. It's not unreasonable to think they'd wait until game day to call someone up - otherwise they spend cap money on someone while they practice.

As far as lines go - I don't see the shuffling of bottom 6 players as any news whatsoever. We all know that Gagner will only be on the "fourth line" for as long as it takes him to have two good shifts in a row, then he gets bumped up.

I've noticed the Gagner mouthguard thing - Patrick Kane does it too, and I've seen others doing it. I'd bet it's an unconscious habit - like Michael Jordan sticking his tongue out.

  12. Since Hemsky's been back, he has been seeing the #1 pairings, not the kids.

    Should help more at home.

I think he would help 91-89 waaaaaaaay more than 94-10, but I'm not the coach.

  15. The idea is to find 3 lines that can at least saw off on the road, trying to get a mismatch with one of them.

I'm not sure we have the right personnel at this point in time. I think a trade is a good plan, if the goal is to make the playoffs.

As constituted, I would try the following:

    SMYT HORC GAGN
    HALL BELA HEMS
    PAAJ NUGE EBER
    PETR LAND JONE

With Eager rotating in as needs be.

Hall and Hemmer will provide enough O on the 2nd line and Belanger will help them saw off the toughs on the road. And he can take D zone face offs, whereas our present 2nd line (the kids) can't. Splitting Hall from the other two kids prevents the opposition from only having to stop one line of the talented kids. Putting Magnus with the other two talents is a way to get him going. That line can be given the cushy zone starts and butter opp. The 4th line can take PK mins to boost their time and keep the main guys fresher for the PP. And Gagner can ride the Smytty train to get him going. This set-up also helps manage RNH's time better. It will be a long season for him.

Question: has this team missed its designated slugger, Hordichuk? Impossible to know for certain I suppose.

  16. If the goal is to re-sign Hemsky, I'm not sure playing him on the 3rd line, babysitting kids, is a clever strategy in that regard.

He was just having a little rest after scoring 10 goals....

  19. Man, has everyone forgotten Gagner is brutal at centre? Can't win a face off (do we really need one more of those? Good luck protecting RNH if we do). Can't handle the defensive responsibilities.

Besides, what's wrong with the job Horcoff is doing? Or do you all want to send RNH back to junior?

Give him more time to get used to the wing.

We do not, at this point, know if Hemsky is going to re-sign with the Oilers and the team needs to find out if Gagner is a legit option to replace Hemsky if he bolts or wants too much money.

The Gagner - EB - MPS line is stone cold and should be broken up. On that I concur.

They should give Gagner some time with Smyth and Horcoff to see what he can do with it.

Make it Hemsky's mission to get MPS going, and toss Lander in the middle. Hemsky's value is higher if he can play with players not named Smyth and MPS would benefit.

Belanger with Jones and Petrell is a great defensive line that scoops prime PK minutes.

  20. @ cf14

It appears Seguin's struggles last night were due to his line mate, Brad Marchand, not letting him have the puck.

Marchand had 5 shots, scored a goal and bumped his P/60 this season to 3.34.

Last season he was merely 2.12 P/60.

    He's a beauty.

  22. I like pboy's lines because the Oil have to try and form three lines and have to get 89-91 going. I don't like 28's contract but he was doing oK with 94-10 and they would have a good chance of sawing-off the top lines and then you hope the 89-93 lines make up the difference.

The Oilers could keep the 93 and 10 lines as is and they'd be a good home team but they need balance for the road.

Good point on the 89 as winger-in- training though; hadn't really thought of that.
