That's Brad Park (#2) and Eddie Giacomin (#1) in about 1972. Notice Park's skates and the way he taped his stick, and check out Eddie's pads (they probably weighed more than Darren Pang by the end of the game).
I cheered for the Rangers unless they played Orr's Bruins and once my Dad flushed the Leafs I cheered for all of the American teams on Saturday night (sounds crazy, but they traded Mahovlich and in English Canada there are still old men who hold the grudge. Ask Howie Meeker about the day Toronto traded Frank Mahovlich).
I cheered for the Rangers all down the line, mostly because they were one of the better NHL teams in the 1970s and watching the Habs win every year with picks stolen from the Oakland Seals was boring. John Davidson had some big moments in the Big Apple before losing his career to injury.
I was fine with the Rangers until they absconded with Adam Graves (part of the Oilerizing of NYC that would eventually send the whole damn tractor east) and since then they can rot in hell like the rest of them.
The current Rangers are a pretty solid group, with excellent goaltending, a solid defense helped by a wonderful new hire (McDonagh) and some jump up front that includes Brad Richards and Marian Gaborik. I think NYR might end up being a destination for Mr. Hemsky if things break that way, so we can consider this a scouting opportunity too.

Nation Radio hits the airwaves at noon today on Team 1260 radio. Emails welcome: nationradio@theteam1260.com and the following guests are scheduled to appear:
- Dan Moriarty, formerly of Cool Shots and currently with Fox Radio and Cinesport. We'll talk about the NHL in California and about some recent advice from Bill Guerin to NBA players.
- Terry Jones from the Edmonton Sun. The world's latest twitter phenom will give me the lowdown on Renney's way, the Katz arena and that Oilers blue.
- Dean Belanger from Jets Nation. Dean was the Oilers feature writer for Hockey's Future for a time and is now back at Jets Nation. He's a Jet, Oiler and Expo fan so is uniquely qualified to deal with pain. We'll discuss the return of the Jets to Winnipeg, his experience at the Pens game in Winnipeg recently and a few other Jets related items.
- Kent Wilson from Flames Nation is back this week. We'll discuss the gap between the Flames and Oilers (it's still there) and the upside down look of the NW division currently.
- Doug Sauter is an Oklahoma City legend and a great source of hockey information. We'll talk about the Barons and we'll talk about something the Clouston's and the Sauter's have in common.
- Danny Gray from Leafs Nation. I'll ask about the Leafs and their early success while also trying to change their fortunes using mind control.

Wouldn't exactly call the Rangers D-core solid. They've been horrible at moving the puck and positioning this season, at least the games I've seen them play. Wouldn't trade their D for Oilers, not even consider it.
ReplyDeleteI moved from Edmonton to Hatttiesburg MS 17 years ago. Ironically the first famous person I met was not Brett Favre but Eddie Giacomin during a floor hockey game. He was down here visiting his son who was an ER doc at a local hospital. Super nice guy with alot of great stories from the 'old days".
ReplyDeleteDid we get f**cked big time in that trade.
ReplyDeleteThe rangers are so stacked on paper, they just need it to gel.
I roomed with Mike Sauter back in the late 60's in Flin Flon. Toughest hockey player I ever met. Wonder if they are related?
ReplyDeleteI agree withdohf0s, the oil D is stronger than the ranger. Course if/when Staal comes back, things will be different.
@FPB: Which trade? Graves for Mallette? Beukeboom for Shaw? Messier for Nichols, Rice & DeBrusk? (We're still paying for that one)
ReplyDeleteRangers robbed us blind for half a decade, only the last two of that passel of trades worked out for Oilers. (Tikkanen for Weight, MacT for Marchant)
Bruce: Yes all of those.
ReplyDeleteBut I was more refering to the Rangers' ''New Hire'' Ryan MCdonagh.
I quite like the various pieces that Sather has assembled on this team. Suspect it may be the strongest team he has put together in NYC. Also like their D now and Marc Staal will give them a real good D when he is back
ReplyDeleteHope we can get some info on OKC year to date as well
Does anyone know if Pat Quinn is still involved with the organization? I thought he might have been involved in the Oil Change show last night.
ReplyDeleteDan: The was a scene where a door was hitting some guy's ass on the way out, he looked a little like Quinn.
ReplyDeletegoing to the kings game tonight in LA! should be a blast. is there any must try confectionery at the staples center?
ReplyDeleteJfry
ReplyDeleteTry the wine, I hear it is a Lombardi specialty.
LT
ReplyDeletePriceless!
Do not expect Oilers and Quinn talk much at all, save "where's the cheque"
I seem to recall that Adam Graves was not traded to the Rangers, they signed him as an RFA in 1991 or so, back in the day when RFA's didn't move around much. A league arbitrator evaluated Grave's value and awarded Troy Mallette's contract to the Oilers as compensation, saying something to the effect that Mallette was a player with equivalent skill and potential. Sadly, Mallette was pretty hopeless.
ReplyDeleteThe proposition that they were comparable players was ludicrous at the time (the Rangers liked Graves so much that they offered him a cool million or more per season, no way Sather would match that) and is beyond comprehension now. I don't think that Mallette scored a goal as an Oiler or more than a dozen in the rest of his career. Graves immediately rocketed off to a series of 20 to 50 goal seasons with the Rangers and became a team captain celebrated as an archetypal old school hockey player. His loss was a big part of the Oilers talent vacuum in the early 90's.
I was reminded of all of this when Burke was raising his shit storm about Lowe's offer sheets and how Lowe was wrecking the salary structure. Lowe may not have been in his right mind at the time, but Oilers had been hurt at least as much as any team in the league ever had by the luring of RFAs through over-payment, Graves being one of the best examples.
Khabby starts.
ReplyDeleteSpeculation is 23 out and 89 to play with 91-20.
Wouldn't be my first choice. Or second.
Gregor tweets: Omark is last guy on ice, getting put through paces with asst. coaches. He will sit tonight
ReplyDeleteNHL_Oilers also tweets:Sam Gagner confirms he will be making his return to the lineup tonight and playing on the wing rather than centre
I though 23 had a decent game against MIN.
Perhaps his sideburns are too long.>
WG: lol. I think Renney has a hot list of sideburn guys and it consists of Omark and Omark.
ReplyDeleteIs it just me or have the comments at ON regarding Renney's line matching been particularly moronic?
ReplyDeleteI wouldn't sit Omark either. PB Eager, move Jones down, 89-10-94
Or maybe sit Lander for a game, drop Belanger and go 23-89-91.
ReplyDeleteIt's funny you look at the Rangers that way, LT. For me, it wasn't that the Rangers were stealing our best players, it was Pocklington having a fire sale. Do you hate LA for taking Gretzky, too?
ReplyDeleteIf Pocklington didn't use the Oilers as a piggy bank everytime he needed money, we could have kept all those players. Well, some of them, at least.
When Adam Graves got scooped up, I knew Messier would be gone soon after; the whole town knew. Graves was Messier's protege', a Messier-in-training, and the Rangers were smart to snap him up.
I enjoyed being able to see all my favorite Oilers playing together on one team, even if they weren't Oilers anymore.
Oh, and I love the Statue of Liberty jerseys, best 3rd jersey ever.
Where's Klefbom playing? Anyone know the back story there?
ReplyDeleteI'd like to see O'Mark sit down for a few. The Celtic Killer needs to be on the right side of the puck more often.
Saturday, October 22, 2011G7 Rangers at Oilers
ReplyDeleteWhen I was a kid, the New York Rangers were strictly the "B" list. Despite being an original 6 team, when my family tuned in HNIC if the Rangers were on things would eventually end up at the kitchen table (beer, smokes, cards, laughter). The television--a black and white--would be shoved over in the corner when I'd watch with my aunt Shannon and my brother (or by myself). I liked the Rangers the way kids who love underdogs always like sad sacks. That's one of the NHL's problems since the world began: bright lights, big city, dog's breakfast for an ice hockey team.
""I was fine with the Rangers until they absconded with Adam Graves (part of the Oilerizing of NYC that would eventually send the whole damn tractor east) and since then they can rot in hell like the rest of them. ""
LOL
Oops, Hey don't know what happened there but your whole damn post got copied LT, ..anyway...good piece.
ReplyDeleteShould we make anything of Khabibulin starting two in a row?
ReplyDeleteIf anyone missed it, the lineup is the same, Linus out, Gagner in. RNH using up the clock.
ReplyDeleteWith the NBA striking this could be good for the NHL. people need to watch sports .
ReplyDelete@Ribs, Yeah I just heart on 1260. Is Gagner playing on RW proof that Tom Renney reads this blog? :p
ReplyDeleteTo me, ganger on the wing would be perhaps a better scenario than trading him for a dman.
Well-built teams often seem to have a few spare centers playing on the wing.
i.e. When Horcoff gets injured again, Nuge/Belanger/Lander/ will be a sure-fire recipe for a lottery pick with a prolonged callup of O'mara/Vandevelde/Cornet/ or Green
I'm interested to see the PRV/Belange/Gagener line play--expecting that Gagner in / Omark out should help improve that line's offense at 5v5.
Gagner used to make some nice passes to Cogliano in full flight, so maybe PRV will benefit from this change too.
ReplyDeleteSo, is it just me or does PRV/Belanger/Gagner sound like a pretty stacked albeit not physical 3rd line?
Great read LT. My brother was a huge Rangers fan growing up and I remember well the days of Park, Hadfield, Gilbert with Emile (the cat) Francis behind the bench.
ReplyDeleteLearned to always root for the team that played them because we were such rivals - but always enjoyed watching Park patrol the blue.
Khabby starting may be a reward for a good overall game against Minny, but I hope Renney is not going to run him 4-5 games in a row now. They need to get DD playing too.
Yea, Gagner could use some time on the wing.
ReplyDeleteThat made me think about Cogliano. I haven't found myself missing him on the roster...at all. It looks like he's won the third center job for the Ducks. I thought they'd keep him at wing too. He's operating at a smooth 29.7% on faceoffs. Oh yea. I guess it is a bit better than Agent Hopkins at 24.1%.
Not Oiler related but since I asked about it on a previous post, I thought I should give my SM-Liiga report.
ReplyDeleteJust got back from the HPK-Tappara game. What a hoot! About 5000 people in the Ritari-areena and the atmoshpere was like a well attended junior game. Lots of fun and lots of hustle from both sides.
Home side HPK scored an impressive 2-0 victory that flattered the visitors. Have been to many Oiler games where they did not show as much effort.
Afraid I wasn't able to uncover any "saw him good" gems though the visitors did have an interesting kid in the line-up: Aleksander Barkov - a 16 year-old 6'2" forward. Son of a Russian player of the same name, the kid is actually Finnish and did not look out of place against the men. He played limited minutes but his 2 goals and 3 assists in 8 games is reasonable production for his team.
If nothing else, someone to keep an eye on.
The most impressive player on the ice, IMO, was the Knights' goaltender: 23 year-old Mikko Tolvanen. Nothing spectacular, just workmanlike in keeping everything in front of him and showing no panic when the defense would break down.
Anyhow, thanks for indulging my previous questions and this rant. Nice reminder to go back to the game outside of the NHL from time to time - well worth it.
Klefbom is playing at Cornell.
ReplyDeletewarywanc - tugging while looking over your shoulder.
Say what?
ReplyDeleteSpeaking of Klefbom. Listen to the Oct.14th interview Gregor had with Tambellini and tell me if you think Tambellini has any idea that Klefbom has been playing on the Junior team.
ReplyDeleteLink (It's on Pg.2)
Ribs,
ReplyDeleteTotally agree on Cogliano. What I definitely do not miss was his 17 offsides per game. Or his blaze-down-the-wing-slapper that usually missed by 6' setting up the odd-man going the other way. If he had a quarter the brains of Ebs he'd be a perennial 30 goaler.
Cogs only has one point thru 6 games. In his defence, the top point getters in ANA have 2 pts. Slow start offensively there.
ReplyDeleteWasn't a hard reach to see 23 being sat and it isn't a reach to see him being dealt either.
ReplyDeleteThe first two bushels of RW TOI will go to 14 and whomever fills out the 94-10 line.
Renney can talk tough about 93 perhaps being sent back and fans can grumble about TOI allocation but i think there's enough depth here that everything can happen: the 10 line can be matched vs the toughs, the 93 line get get all the desirable zone starts and a 89 or 20 helmed third line with 91-83 can be a damn find line as well.
I don't think there's a chance 23 sticks around unless 83 or 89 gets moved quickly for a dman and I don't know what kind of a hurry the Oilers are in to make that move.
What I would like to see is:
94-10-28
91-89-83
4-93-14
55-20-56
37 and 16 as the extra forwards and this pushes 57 back down to OKC. Also, 28 and 83 can perhaps flip-flop.
I think the only hope 23 has of sticking around is if he inexplicably winds up playing with 94-10. The Oilers will have patience with a guy like 91 under-performing points-wise on a third line but 23 won't get that much rope.
And if he can't kill penalties or drive a PP then probably he shouldn't get the rope in the first place. I enjoy watching him play, don't get me wrong, and there's no way we won't lose the trade but not everyone's gonna be able to stay around and if you can't find a role then you're vulnerable.
Very nice post LT.
ReplyDeleteFirst a dark thought. Who needs Chigurh when the other team consists of Modano, Gaborik, Forsberg, the Sedins, and the flavour of the day hattrick castoff, to pick just a few of the black hoods and barrel riders that haunt my nightmares?
Moving on, I was distressed about TJ's piece after the Minny mess, paraphrased for emphasis:
Nugent-Hopkins? “He played fine. As a line, I thought they had difficulty.”
Whoa. Isn’t this supposed to be different this year? Isn’t this a team which is supposed to be much more accountable ... ?
And what about those eight straight losses to Minnesota? “We’ll end that streak. To hell with it. We’ll end it.”
I preferred Ryan Smyth’s view. “Unacceptable. Close isn’t good enough here anymore.”
Recently I saw a quip from Steven Moffat, upon taking over as the producer for Doctor Who (which I've never watched), who commented that the Doc has defeated the Daleks "about 400 times" making them "the most reliably defeatable enemies in the universe", so he plans to give them a rest.
Nice of our savvy mullet to give TJ the quote of supreme satisfaction from the knife of 400 twists.
Paraphrasing ruthlessly from Ebert's review of Glengarry Glen Ross:
Shelley (the Machine) Levene, played by Jack Lemmon was once a hotshot salesman, winning the office sweepstakes month after month. Now he is making no sales at all, his wife is in the hospital, [and David Mamet is writing his lines so you really worry for this guy]. [Lemmon has a scene of greatness.] He makes a house call on a man who does not want to buy real estate. [Everyone knows it] but Lemmon keeps trying, not registering the man's growing impatience. There is a fine line in this scene between deception and breakdown, between Lemmon's false jolity and the possibility that he may collapse right on the man's rug.
I often feel like this reading the old MSM sports journalists. But still, it shocks me when TJ laps up the old Dalek quote.
(hunts for remote control)
(finds remote control)
ReplyDeleteShortly after TJ, I read this gem of wisdom from Ruben Navarrette Jr. on
Why Republicans don't trust Romney:
While media elites and politicians mock Cain's 9-9-9 tax reform plan, everyday voters give him credit for at least having a plan -- and extra credit for the fact that it is easy to understand. By contrast, Romney's economic plan has 59 points. Should Americans really need to hire a team of accountants to understand a candidate's sales pitch?
I guess the world's most powerful country (and wealthiest country in the history of human civilization) has the least complex economy since the first bean was dropped into a convex shard of baked clay.
H. L. Mencken: For every complex problem there is an answer that is clear, simple, and wrong.
Once you shear the apparatus of cause and effect from political debate, you're pretty much reduced to bikini wars.
MC: Tell me, Fussy Britches, what would you do if you were elected president?
FB: I'd lower taxes, preserve programs, pay down the deficit, increase employment, reduce consumer prices, shred regulation, and maintain mature oversight over financial markets.
MC: And how would you go about doing this?
FB: With a nine point plan.
Sounds like a winner to me.
Can we agree in this forum that it's too soon to judge an offence minus Hemsky, Gagner, and Whitney (the real thing)?
If the sharp and unanticipated dip in GAA is attributable to Renney stressing defense first--which he implies in his recent quotes--our offensive woes look like mighty small fish compared to the woe discarded.
I'm about as confident in our recent GAA dip as I would be in a rice paper greenhouse in Thailand, but if it holds up, aren't there more useful things to contribute than invoking the Sarbanes-Oxley of blue collar righteousness whereby RNH is not given a passing grade if his line struggles? As a fifth game rookie?
With that kind of reasoning, it's not hard to imagine how the Dalek's keep coming back for more of the same.
That was some dumbed-down Deadman right there:)
ReplyDeleteRangers were/still kind of are my dad's team.
ReplyDeleteSaskatchewan gave the Rangers some great players over the years. Many were instrumental in the cups they did win.
Cook brothers, Bryan Hextall, and Clint Smith.
I don't trust Romney's hair. His voice is reassuring, though.
ReplyDeleteDeadman Walking sure the fuck needs to do some better research: Lemmon's character in Glengarry Glen Ross honestly believes he's onto a real sale, as does the audience...taken in context of the story wtf else is there to think? Sure, some effete critic can "know" everything, but at the end of the day the story rules cinema, despite arrogant opines to the contrary.
ReplyDeleteI'm hearing rumours to the effect that RNH is getting sent back to the Rebels...I wouldn't mind watching him all year long, but on the other hand I might as well trust the lames running this team.
Renney is starting to grate, in the exact same way as he grated me when he ran the Rags..overcoaching that's no way to keep your job once the dawn breaks, Tommy.
I don't trust Romney's hair. His voice is reassuring, though.
ReplyDelete...And he looks kind of goofy in a bikini.
Lowetide: Don't you understand, every fucking USA presidential candidate is measured on the JFK scale? Take poor old Al Gore(one of your faves I'm sure)...he even got himself shot up in 'Nam, just to relive that PT109 baloney.
ReplyDeleteThis comment has been removed by the author.
ReplyDeleteMaybe Omark is about to be traded for Turris.
ReplyDeleteHe was third overall one year you know.
OT:
ReplyDeleteJust for the record...
Al Gore was guarenteed a safe desk job in Vietnam. It was John Kerry who got a medal for stupid leadership of a PT109 boat or whatever it is called.
Traktor: now was that Cornell comment some sort of paralleling of Klefbom with Riley Nash?
ReplyDeleteIf so, a point to you sir for obscurity.
reedsem: What a Mississippi university student does with their books.
One thing about Dany Heatley, he never costs his team making a silly play. Hard on the forecheck against Kesler, should not have been a penalty.
ReplyDeleteCanucks have made a trade.
ReplyDeleteFleeced the Panthers out of Booth for Samuelsson/Sturm/Kurtenbach. Gillis is a wonderful GM. Just a wonderful deal.
ReplyDeleteI never knew who to root for while taking in a Habs-Leafs game in the past.
ReplyDeleteBrian Burke and Dion Phaneuf have tipped the scales.
Sweet jesus what the hell was Tallon thinking?
ReplyDeleteMan. That's a hell of a trade. Booth's a beauty.
ReplyDeleteSo a solid tough winger and a two way centre for spare parts. Well done Gillis. Vancouver just got harder to play against. Florida dumps salary and gets veterans. May work out for both, but Vancouver is better in the long run with Booth (if he is healthy)
ReplyDeleteGillis is doing fantastic job in Vancouver.
ReplyDeleteAdding Booth for Samuelsson is great asset management.
On the bright side, we'll hear even more "Boo" ing sounds when the Canucks play.
ReplyDeleteI don't think this a good trade for Vancouver. Samuelsson's been a better player than Booth the last couple of years. Booth also has 4 years left on his deal and a much bigger cap hit.
ReplyDeleteDale Tallon's still a dope but clearing Booth's salary is a good move and they actually improved the team for this season.
Booth is going to get a better set of linemates in Vancouver and Samuelsson is in the "he's injured a lot" phase of his career. Excellent deal by Gillis.
ReplyDeleteAgain.
Booth scored 23 goals last season on a crappy team with crappy line mates.
ReplyDeleteA Kesler - Higgins - Booth line should be one of the best second lines in the league.
Gillis also got a third round pick in the deal for all his trouble in paying Reinprecht to play in Chicago.
Man knows what he's doing.
Bobby Mac's take on twitter:
ReplyDeleteFLA's big gain in deal is losing a $2.175M salary (Reinprecht) in the minors. But FLA had not been impressed with Booth's play for some time since Reinprecht is going straight to the minors for Van and this gives them some cap flexibility. Plus, Kesler makes everyone on his team better, so why not pair Booth with him?
A Kesler - Higgins - Booth line should be one of the best second lines in the league.
ReplyDeleteI can't think of a better one off the top of my head.
Booth's been a tough minute out-scorer, the rarest of birds.
Dys got a lot better today.
Taking my Mom to the game for her 75th birthday. She's got her old 3rd Jersey on too.
3-2 Oilers in a nail biter.
Book it!
Kesler and Booth will be a killer tandem for years to come. Gillis pulled a coup tonight, kudos to him.
ReplyDeleteBooth and Kesler played minor hockey together in Michigan.
ReplyDeleteI'm guessing it's a one goal game from the sideburn guys.
ReplyDeleteThere was a scene where Kwinn made me laugh like a bastard.
dunno about the double start. Had a similar feeling when Renney called that timeout last game. Had to know they'd score no?
Hurry up Habs. Way better poutine in Montreal.
They should have had an intermission between the anthems.
ReplyDeleteWhite hot Lundqvist. Pfffft. LET'S GO OILERS!!!
ReplyDeleteI never thought I would ever pine for the days of Lorieau. I want a singer who gets somone other than Joey singing.
Don't know if you caught it, LT, but there was a heckuva 4th inning in the ball game.
Someone call me?
ReplyDeleteThis WS game doesn't end before 3am. Book it.
ReplyDeleteI dunno, did your phone ring?
ReplyDeleteAt the game, why Khabibulin?
ReplyDeleteAt the game, why Khabibulin?
ReplyDeleteWell, he's been the better goalie so far this year. I can't see that continuing, but until it stops I can't really complain about him getting starts.
Decent start except for the kids last shift.
ReplyDeleteso, very early on, renney gets to match his checking line against NYR's scoring line and Idiot Hentry Winkler gets to do the same.
ReplyDeleteSo, either the 20 or PP will have to win this game.
Even the best Barker moments end in error.
ReplyDeleteIdiot Henry Winklet. Well that's perfect. :-)
ReplyDeleteReKhab might not be completely sober.
ReplyDeleteWas the giveaway of the night a roll of duct tape? Sounds dead in there.
ReplyDeleteLast 3 games, I have been seeing Lander good. Am I the only one?
ReplyDeleteThat was a nice shot by 5...
ReplyDeleteaggly:Oilers D-zone work so far.
I know I'm not. Why is alcohol so alocholic?
ReplyDeleteJust an unbelievable ball game.
ReplyDeleteOilers get their PP out.
That Sutton change there was great. What was his plan if Whitney wasn't ready to jump on to the ice and beat the guy to the iced puck?
ReplyDeleteEbs gotta bad snakebite.
ReplyDeleteTwo goals Ebs tonight.
Jones would have buried that one. Hee.
ReplyDeleteIs... is Lundqvist's mask sparkly?
ReplyDeleteAny number of pucks should have been buried by this point.
ReplyDeleteIsn't it funny how some can see Horc as having "lost a step" while others see him "reborn".
ReplyDeleteHall is 4 feet from the bench and doesn't grab a stick.
ReplyDeleteThe defense are looking much less servicable this game. I'm seeing Sutton and Barker real bad.
ReplyDeleteAnyone else like 20's break dancing in the D-zone?
ReplyDeleteGagner gone so long he forgot Smid isn't exactly who you want to try passing it to on a rush.
ReplyDeleteOilers look horrendous in theor own zone when they have the puck.
Countdown to a Barker penalty starting his next shift....3..2...1...
ReplyDeleteThe Oilers this year seem to be a little more calm. They're not perfect God knows, but experience plus brains looks a little less crazy.
ReplyDeleteSmid driving the net? Where did that come from?
ReplyDeleteSmid looked like a power forward on that chance.
ReplyDeleteI think the OTC would say the Kid Line is being a bunch of "Fancy Dans". I think they're a little too impressed with their own early sucess and aren't keeping their game simple.
ReplyDeleteOhp...Guess he's saved by the bell (it's all right).
ReplyDeleteMy TV Guide quite optimistically believes the ball game will end at 9. They might not get out of the top of the 6th by 9.
ReplyDeletei think the kids have played well.
ReplyDeletegood chances and two golden chances on the PP which Lundqvist made some pretty huge efforts to get over and stop.
Pujols absolutely crushes the 97 mph fastball.
ReplyDeleteBaseball needs some amphetimes. Unless the appeal of the game is that you can get up, take a leak, get the mail and come back with a beer in hand and not have missed anything.
ReplyDeleteChris: I need you r exact address.
ReplyDeleteLove the radio show though LT.
ReplyDeleteThanks. I work hard on that thing.
ReplyDeleteRyan smyth the warhorse.
ReplyDeleteOkay, did Smid get hit in the head enough for him to think he's an offensive d-man now?
ReplyDeleteI like.
Beer mail. I like the concept.
ReplyDeleteOKC 3-2 loss in a shoot-out tonight. Hartikainen with a PP goal tonight. He had a goal and an assist last night.
ReplyDeleteMy reading mirrors Ebert's humanist coloured glasses in that Lemon's character is desperately trying to convince himself he's onto a real sale (the real sale is selling himself that the sale is real)--the same way we try to convince ourselves that the 1980s are here again after every first overall draft pick, some days more than others.
ReplyDeleteDavid Mamet is in the news lately for His Shift to the Right and David Mamet’s Fatal Conceit
Here's another random review, that came up at the top of my Google search for
Glengarry Glen Ross:
But to get a sense of what an incredible actor he was, watch him doing those scenes. As he delivers his "radio announcer" voice to the prospective customer, he sounds at least somewhat enthusiastic, but his face tells a completely different story. He looks defeated, tired, even bored.
He goes on to declare this an "Oscar snub" since "The Academy doesn’t have a clue". Outvoted by the glitterati I nevertheless cling to my marginal view.
In any case, my post was perpendicular to the political spectrum (which I fundamentally don't get, which makes me a first class moron, I know). My post was about what level of analysis people embrace: deeper insight vs the same old shit. It was also about simplifying issues until nothing is left but noisy polarization.
I read a lot about Mamet because I was trying to understand the cognitive structure of those who instinctively view the world through the right/left filter. I doubt I'll ever succeed, but I'll continue to try.
An undercurrent in what I wrote is that the Poti-mouth MSM regurgathon contributes to running players like Gilbert out of town on the first bus. I should do more research: some people are cool with that. Yeah, I know.
I'm tired of the old MSM. In my view, if there was a LT in every box of Cracker Jack, the world would be a far better place. We don't have to agree, but can we at least disagree amid a working apparatus of cause and effect?
Barker is killing us tonight. They keep attacking his side.
ReplyDeletenice backcheck by Nuge
ReplyDeleteMPS just flies in their so strong on the puck. If he could just follow his rushes in off the wing with a goal he'd be magic.
ReplyDeleteGeez that picture of Lundquist looks like he's auditioning for a part in The Anchorman 2.
Renney: Yea, I told him to shoot.
ReplyDeleteGood thing that kid is only a passer ???? The Nuge !
ReplyDeleteThe Oil City Mad Man!
ReplyDeleteLundquist totally missed that pass by RNH. Geez.
ReplyDeleteIf only guys on our team named Ryan are going to score, we need more guys named Ryan.
ReplyDeleteIs it just me or is everyone else liking the Belanger line alot more with Gagner on it rather than Omark?
ReplyDeleteHe's no good. Send him to Red Deer before he scores 20.
ReplyDeleteHorcoff 6-0 on the dot so far.
ReplyDeleteright now is the time to start shopping a forward and the first rounder, for a top pairing dman.
ReplyDeleteThe allure of a Yakupov draft makes that 1st pick very sexy, and the doubt lingers about EDMs fortunes this season.
Early trends say this team finishes out of the lottery. Hopefully nobody noticed.
Yes, due to our exceptional goaltending and strong defensive play there are currently a number of teams sucking harder than the Oilers. Exceptional goaltending and strong defensive play..we are in bizarro world.
ReplyDeleteAnd if I'm hedging my bets, I'd say the most inflated market values on this roster right now, is that 1st rounder, and PRV.
ReplyDeleteCan you get a good enough dman with the value of those two?
I'll revisit the OEL suggestion, but maybe someone that's under a long term deal already works in the veteran group.
Oh hell...
ReplyDeleteHah geez. I have yet to see this Potter characers face. Thought for sure I'd get a look while he was in the box. Bars right in the way.
ReplyDelete1-0 after two.Hope this movie has a different ending.
ReplyDeleteI must be smoking acid. No way the Oilers have a 4th line that is responsible and does not bleed chances.
ReplyDeleteYes, smoking acid, that is it.
The penalty kill looks amazing thus far this year. in fact, most of the play in our own end (without the puck) has been a massive improvement over last year.
ReplyDeleteJim Dowd is impressive on that 4line.
ReplyDeleteBrad Richards is way too tanned for a hockey player.
ReplyDeleteDoes that contract remind people of the year the rags signed Drury and Gomez?
When is goal-less Ryan Whitney going to start pulling his Ryan-based goal scoring weight? Slacker.
ReplyDeleteExcept Brad Richards is a much better hockey player than Drury and Gomez
ReplyDeleteOpposing players seem to take a real disliking to Mr. Lander.
ReplyDeletePlease turn into Ryan Kesler 2.0 sans-douchieness.
Gagner has looked pretty good so far. It will be very interesting to see what Renney does when Hemsky is back. Of course, Hemsky probably won't finish the game, so Renney will be able to go back to this line-up for the game after.
ReplyDeleteThe douchieness is part of the package though. I noticed that too, that's back to back games that the opposing players have singled out Lander. That's a good thing.
ReplyDeleteAs long as he stays away from the diving and the pissing and moaning to the media about opposing players I'll be just fine.
ReplyDeleteIs Epstein going to show up at Pujol's home with a dump truck full of Cubbie's money or does anyone think he's staying in St. Lou?
ReplyDeleteI'm a big Red Sox fan and I would never say a bad word about Theo but he made some bad Free Agent contracts in his time in Boston and he isn't afraid to throw big dollars around.
Deadman Walking sure the fuck needs to do some better research: Lemmon's character in Glengarry Glen Ross honestly believes he's onto a real sale, as does the audience...taken in context of the story wtf else is there to think?
ReplyDeleteMy friendly Oilers friend, not to sound a dick, but the whole vibe of the film is how desperate all the salesmen are. "It's a tough racket". Lemon, or Shelley "Machine" Levine is in a bad horrible way because of funds needed for his daughter's medical bills.
Petrell is having his best game so far this year.
ReplyDeleteThe walkons in Potter and Petrell are making their presence felt in this game. Every good team needs some useful players coming out of nowhere.
ReplyDeleteKind of the Rangers to keep taking dumb penalties like that.
ReplyDeleteGood old Ryan Potter.
ReplyDeleteWizard stuff.
ReplyDeleteWell that goes against type
ReplyDeleteHarr... Corry Potter!
ReplyDeleteA second goal? How unusual.
ReplyDeleteI like the hard work the oil are putting in, hard back checking and good boards work (best in years thanks to growth and new personell). Im sure that if they stick with the process and keep playing this way, the goals will come. Does anyone think that with this group of forwards we will keep having difficulties scoring goals as the year goes on?
ReplyDeleteVerification: mutati, as in hakuna mutati :)
so much happy.
ReplyDeleteRNH with another assist. Should we be worried?
ReplyDeleteSutton is good.
ReplyDeleteprev. gotta love Potter.
Hey! I saw the guys face! I don't think I could pick him out of a lineup, though.
ReplyDeleteNice setup by Agent Hopkins. Good thing Renney didn't sit him this game.
Can we send Khabbibulin to jail every offseason as part of training camp?
ReplyDeletePujols hit his 3rd dinger of the night in the 9th. Wow.
ReplyDeleteBench Sutton. He's so terrible...
ReplyDeletePucks in the crease. Who knew they could be so dangerous?
ReplyDeleteWonder what happened to Lundqvist.
ReplyDeletemust have hurt his arms putting them up and telling his defence ... I surrender !
ReplyDeleteBench Sutton, seriously. How many races is he going to lose by 10 feet...
ReplyDeleteHe was shaking his arm, perhaps he went down awkwardly to stop the puck?
ReplyDeleteA while ago I was complaining that the Oilers needed, but weren't getting, any of those cheap but wholly serviceable defensemen freom the Staios/Smith tree. Potter may be my answer (albeit with a slightly different skill set).
ReplyDeleteBench Sutton!
ReplyDeleteSmid is having a strong year and he's not a big ticket item contract wise.
ReplyDeleteOr maybe Sutton. Dependable, stay at home, huge, cheap.
ReplyDeleteThese Oilers look like an actual NHL team.
ReplyDeleteSmid has looked quality so far this season. He hasn't even hurt himself. The backcheck and the support has been earnest this game.
ReplyDeleteSmid is having a strong year and he's not a big ticket item contract wise.
ReplyDeleteYeah, I'm happy with Smid. But they traded Chris Pronger for him. Potter and Staios were UFA pickups, and Smith cost us a draft pick. We acquired Smid as a blue-chip prospect, and he's turning into a useful, dependable second pairing guy.
Or maybe Sutton. Dependable, stay at home, huge, cheap.
I like Sutton more than most here do, I think, but he ain't cheap, and he's only becoming less dependable from here. He was fair value for Kurtis Foster, which is something short of high praise.
So the kid line is not as apt in their own zone as the other forward lines, correct?
ReplyDeleteThen why the hell do they keep sending the Sutton-Barker pairing over the boards with them?
We are playing alot like the 2005-2007 Anahiem Ducks aren't we?
ReplyDeleteEberle just can't buy a goal this year.
Youth.
ReplyDeleteWhen is Barker's ass going to get stapled to the bench. It is like every one else is playing the game on fast forward, but he is stuck in rewind.
ReplyDeleteGood thing Ebs and RNH have the hockey smarts, because sometimes it seems like Hall is a bit lacking.
ReplyDeleteJust for record keeping sake, I'll publish this... That was a BS call on Hall.
ReplyDeleteI think Khabibulin misread his contract and thinks it expires this year.
ReplyDeleteWhitney! only goal-less Ryan misses the empty net!
ReplyDeleteThe Oilers outshoot and outchance the opposition, protect a 2 goal lead and Khabi gets a shutout.
ReplyDeleteIs this real life?
Most complete hockey game I've seen the Oil play in years.
ReplyDeleteHorcoff and Gilbert have been workhorses this year. They don't get enough love on the interwebs so good on them.
ReplyDeleteHenrik was cramping.
ReplyDeleteResulting of a 'heavy flow' of shots? #bathroomhumor
the Corey Power potter play goal...Mark Lee is priceless..nice win.
ReplyDeleteI will admit the reasonable expectations Gods are mocking me, but NK's current stats--based on age and history--are impossible.
ReplyDeleteEither the Rangers blow hard, or... I'm not sure what. Khabby with the shutout; Craziness!
ReplyDeleteNo Lowetide. They're Unpossible.
ReplyDeleteNothing is Impossible
"Steve", he's chepaer than Gill and Mitchell, his two main comps, and in terms of cap %age cheaper than Staios and Smith were. And we have first shot at signing him for cheaper next year.
ReplyDeleteVery solid effort tonight. Looked like they learned something from last game. That said this was only our second game this season against a fore-checking team, and I expect to match up better against those teams, especially at home. You can tell we're going to have real issues on the road.
LT: let's hope your reasonable expectations are far off because if Khabby regresses to the mean, he'll have to fall much farther now.
ReplyDeleteMattwatt:
ReplyDeleteThe Oilers are 1/2 second away from back to back shutouts and people are still knocking guys?Barker and Sutton are the third pairing not the first.
Amazing that Corey Potter couldn't find a permanent NHL job prior to this season.
ReplyDeleteCommentator said Lundkvist left the game with cramping...
ReplyDeleteWe all know what was cramping up when he realized he wasn't getting his run support...
Yea..Khabbibulin is one of the NHL's leaders in every goaltending categories. What the hell eh?
ReplyDeleteAnd MVP riding the smallsamplesize. Right?
ReplyDeleteOake: "Ryan, your parent divorced when you were a kid. Was the goal for Mom and the assist for Dad?"
ReplyDeleteRNH: "I don't really think about that kind of thing, just trying to do my best."
Oake: "So you don't have any kind of contact with your parents at all?"
RNH is tied for sixth in the league in goals. I'm worried about his goals/assists ratio...where are the assists?

ReplyDelete"Steve", he's chepaer than Gill and Mitchell, his two main comps, and in terms of cap %age cheaper than Staios and Smith were.
ReplyDeleteTo be clear, I was talking about Staios and Smith and the time of their acquisitions, not at the time of their inflated final contracts.
If we do re-sign him, I hope it's with the 6-7 spot in mind, and for the corresponding salary.
Prison changes a man spoiler.
ReplyDeleteI missed it, did Oakeward ask reKhab about his summer holidays?
ReplyDelete@ Lowetide
ReplyDeleteWow, does Oake not have any boundaries?
Prison changes a man spoiler.
ReplyDeleteWe are 7 games in and we already have post of the year.
Oilleak: He didn't really say that, I made it up. :-)
ReplyDeleteDerek wins the thread:)
