The thing about dreams like that one (this is a photo from about 1960, a few years before I was in the back of the Ford) is that they end. Not quite nightmare quality, there's excitement in them and since the dream has been experienced before (and the outcome is known) there's also joy in the little things. I can still remember that massive steering wheel (seriously. If you've never seen a big old car from that era, check the steering wheel. You'll laugh out loud) and the way Dad used to time the engine by listening to its hum (not bragging, the guy could fix any engine). My experience with the Minnesota Wild is the exact opposite. There is no joy--at all--in the game, and that little bit of hope one has for the Oilers is shot dead as soon as Minnesota scores the first goal. Oh, and by the way the always score the first goal.
Oilers might as well start Khabibulin tonight, hell start both goalies it won't make a difference. I blame Jacques Lemaire, he poisoned the water hole in Toy Story, he destroyed the beauty and poetry of hockey, he cracked the block of that flathead Ford.
See you in Hell's (gate) Jacques.

I'm tempted to bet on the Oilers tonight because:
ReplyDelete1) They are a +150 dog, and I think its a little closer than that. MIN's D isn't anywhere near PIT's.
2) I'm a masochist and like setting money on fire.
That Ford is one sweet ride.
When they built cars like that out of steel you hurt the mountain before you hurt the car.
Now that Dobber Hockey put his line combo tool behind a pay wall (I would too if I were him), if you are looking for line combo stuff, there is a tool at Left Wing Lock
ReplyDeleteIts not as good as Dobber in terms of being able to search one player in particular, but lots of useful info is still available.
Great imagery LT
ReplyDeleteNot sure Mike Yeo is Jacques Lemaire but for 5 years I could not give away Oiler- Wild tickets if I had alternate commitment
When they built cars like that out of steel you hurt the mountain before you hurt the car.
ReplyDeleteToo bad the dude inside was a gooey mess of ooze spread out over the dashboard.
My grandpa's truck actually had an iron dash that formed to a pointed edge that was lined up perfectly with my face.
We used to go to Valemount,B.C. in the summers to visit relatives.About 1/2 the distance of your trip.
ReplyDeleteDad had a Ford Meteor, with a back power window. We didn't use seat belts, and no one put the window down when they smoked. Not sure how my siblings or I have lasted this long.
I tought you had a long line of Plymouths. THIS BLOG IS ALL LIES LIES!
ReplyDeleteNow back at the thread:
This has to be a malediction of some sort.
Minnesota was very middle of the pack when it came to being scored on since Jacques left.
This has to be a malediction of some sort.
ReplyDeleteLemaire left the Wild at the end of the 2009 season.
The Oiler's have been a festering pile of 30th place for the 2 years since he left.
Curse gets broken tonight if DD starts.
If NK starts, meh.
@Woodguy: Thanks for the link.
ReplyDeleteBah. It doesn't count if Bouchard isn't in the lineup. The bastard.
ReplyDeleteIt's obviously subject to change, but the Oilers' website does have Dubnyk at the top of the depth chart for this game. It also has Omark listed as the 13th forward, so it's clearly been updated.
ReplyDeleteShhh, don't tell anyone but I think that Dubnyk may be our #1`goalie and NK the backup.
ReplyDeleteCan't wait for some firewagon hockey tonight. ;)
ReplyDeleteI am newly moved to Minnesota and have tickets for tonight. I am not super excited for the game (they always seem to lose here), but my options to see them live without a long drive/flight are pretty limited.
ReplyDeleteAnother classic LT. Will never forget my dad driving my wife and I on the narrow passes high above Lake Tahoe. Sweaty palms, sliding to the side of the car furthest from the ledge. Horror story.
ReplyDeleteMaybe someone should sacrifice a chicken or something to break the hex? Seriously, no time like the present, but if I were to guess, I'd say the hex finally gets broken later in the season, not tonight.
Still it's early in the season and hope springs eternal...
I've driven that canyon tons of times and it still has parts that make your heart skip.
ReplyDeleteJaques Lemaire coached like he played: safe, effective, and boring.
There is a special part of hell reserved for him where he has to coach a lineup that features Rob Brown, MIke Bullard, and Rob Schremp!
Tychkowski tweets...
ReplyDeleteNik Backstrom, 14-0 against the Oilers, starting tonight for the Wild
Well, that sounds rather daunting.
Khabibulin went 0-5 last season against Minnesota.
ReplyDeleteMaybe more reasons Jones is in tonight over Omark is because he's from Minnesota. He lives there, was drafted by them.
ReplyDeleteLines...
ReplyDeleteHall-NugentHopkins-Hemsky
Smyth-Belanger-Eberle
Paajarvi-Horcoff-Jones
Petrell-Lander-Hordichuk
Sutton-Gilbert
Smid-Peckham
Barker-Petry
Khabibulin
i recall visits to the grandparents' farm and ricocheting around inside the cab of an old mid-40s one ton like a pebble in a coffee can...
ReplyDeletelooking forward to seeing Jones-Petrell-Hordichuk tonight. hopefully they can create some chaos (the good kind) tonight and kick a little clutterbutt...
verification: headju
"headju win, talesu lose..."
Maybe more reasons Jones is in tonight over Omark is because he's from Minnesota. He lives there, was drafted by them.
ReplyDeleteThe Journal has Omark wearing a no contact jersey in practice yesterday due to taking a shot on his instep.
Bah
ReplyDeleteI am pretty unhappy with Omark being benched. One bad game doesnt deserve a benching. Esp when Jones and Hordichuk are in the lineup.
I would like to know the zonestarts from the last game. To my eye the Omark line started a lot in the D-zone No?
@ Ducey
ReplyDeleteIf you are right, then my raging was unnecessary.
Fordse: Ford SE? future model?
Ducey - Omark said it was a minor thing. He participated in all of the drills.
ReplyDeleteRibs:
ReplyDeleteJones is from Ontario. On the Miami Muredhawks site where I was verifying that, I noticed Jones' uncle is John Tonelli. That explains a few things to me. The Oil love NHL nepotism.
If actually makes sense to start NK tonight if they want DD to start against CAL on Saturday.
ReplyDelete+150 isn't quite enough when he starts though.
He may play well, but I need to see a few games of it first.
If Omark is in the doghouse Harksi would look great in his spot.
If Renney runs 91-10-28 at 22 OZ starts like he did with 91-10-28 last game then its a good test to see if Jones can hack those type of minutes.
Based on last year's play, I'm guessing no, but should be interesting to watch.
I see the logic behind starting NK. Most teams like to see both thier goalies get some game action early on; esp if one of them is not Luongo/Kipper.
ReplyDeleteI really dislike Belanger with Smyth and Eberle.I think Horcoff is a much better fit.
ReplyDeleteDucey - Omark said it was a minor thing. He participated in all of the drills.
ReplyDeleteOk. Thanks.
In other news I see the Oilers have 4 Dmen in the top 15 scorers among WHL Dmen.
1. Gernat 14 pts
10. Davidson 8
11. Marincin 8
15. Musil 7
Davidson and Maricin are technically tied with a few guys for 4th but are down the list due to fewer goals.
The best things about cars from that era?
ReplyDelete- being 8 years old and able to lie in the rear window dash looking up at the sky
- in the event of a head on collision...the four second freefall prior to contact with the windshield
- hitting an immoveable object and having only a $500 repair bill (they didn't make them out of recycled pop cans and milk jugs back then)
- being able to change your own sparkplugs and adjust the timing without paying another $500
FastOil - Sorry, I didn't mean that he was born and raised there. He lives there in the off-season.

ReplyDeleteWG,
ReplyDeleteIf I were betting on anything tonight, it would be for CGY to lose to the Habs.
EDM (and a lot of NHL teams) has never done well after a win and long break before the next game. Perhaps they have too much time to think about how good they are.
As one of my mentors always said during my training: "In this business, you always need to be a little uncomfortable. It's when you start thinking it's easy that you are humbled."
Must win game tonight, if the boys are serious about flying out of the gate.
ReplyDeleteWoodguy, go for it, lol.
Khabibulin had some nice percentages against the Wild last year:
ReplyDelete3.86 GAA
.840 Sv%
.000 Win/Pts %
Ribs:
ReplyDeleteNo worries - does everyone already know he is Tonelli's nephew? Was news to me.
Bruce: those numbers are so bad, I don't know that it's even possible to be sarcastic about them.
ReplyDeleteThen again, for those of us who don't believe in Khabibulin, having him get shelled in Minnesota is probably conducive to the "Play Dubnyk" cause.
@Cactus: To put that awful save percentage into perspective, check out the # of shots Khabi faced in those 5 games: 24, 24, 26, 23, 22. It's not like he was getting bombarded, but he let in four a night, just like clockwork.
ReplyDeleteTencer tweeted "Fun fact from @duncansadava. Ryan Smyth's last game as an Oiler in 06-07 was the first game of the current 16 game losing streak in Minny"
ReplyDeleteSo, maybe Smyth helps break the curse tonight ?
@Bruce,
ReplyDeleteWell, that is consistency Bruce. True consistency in the face of adversity. LOL
I am glad that they are starting NK, its best if he proves if he can be a backup or not early in the season.
ReplyDeleteRenney pre-game on the Khabibulin/Dubnyk Rotation...
ReplyDeleteI won't be surprised if it's close to being even (games played).
He's not sounding too confident in Khabibulin right now.
Aw crap. I thought Bouchard was still serving his suspension. He's back. 38 points in 38 games versus the Oilers.
ReplyDeleteWe beat them at home in the pre-season.
ReplyDeleteBrodziak definitely scores tonight. Heatley, maybe.
Ashley,
ReplyDeleteYou do realize that Montreal's last game.... was the same day as the Oilers, and they won 5-1?
PDO: Maybe more to do with the fact CGY's bad and MTL's good.
ReplyDeleteIf I were betting on anything tonight, it would be for CGY to lose to the Habs.
ReplyDeleteActually PDO convinced me to bet on CAL since their coach just kicked their ass and MTL has injuries on D.
WG: Gorges is always hurt.
ReplyDeleteAnd Camm, and Spacek...
ReplyDeleteCamm will hurt us. But we still have a strong top 6.
ReplyDeleteAnd Spacek is probably worst than his replacement.
And Spacek is probably worst than his replacement.
ReplyDeleteShit-talking Spacek?
At LT's?
WG: He's getting old.
ReplyDeleteTough he seems in better shape than last year. Some questioned his conditioning.
I think this is a good thing, giving NK the start tonight. That would mean Dubnyk gets opening night and then tough start against VCR.
ReplyDeleteI think we're looking at close to the end for NK, but here's hoping he proves me wrong starting tonight.
I think the Oilers can just alternate goaltenders for the rest of October and that will be a reasonable decision, unless someone is beachball bad again.
ReplyDeleteThere are a couple of back-to-backs, and only one two day break.
Well I'd say the odds of NK beating Dubnyk for the starting job are very low.
ReplyDeleteHis age, poor performance, injury history and the young defense are a lot for him to overcome.
I'm OK with both DD and NK alternating for Oct. so that they both get a chance to get the rust out. After that they should keep playing one until he loses and then switch. It would be interesting to see how many games each of them ends up playing at the end of the year
ReplyDeleteThey're crazy to start that washed up plug.
ReplyDeleteDubnyk's a solid goalie who doesn't wow anyone.
Khabibulin is as likely to blow a game as win it, and it's only the 2nd game of the season.
If they score 6 goals, everything will be alright.
Neal's already blown by last year's total goals as a Penguin.
ReplyDeleteGood for him.
Hall with a beauty pass to Gilbert for a 5 bell chance and then Jones had a tip in close that could have cashed.
ReplyDeleteSo far so good.
Anyone got a working link?
ReplyDeleteHemsky passed to himself twice that last shift. Awesome.
ReplyDeletelol. The one play in the MINN zone was brilliant, just brilliant.
ReplyDelete5-2 in shots for the Oilers and it must be 4-0 in chances.
ReplyDeleteRyan Smyth is back!
ReplyDeleteNice to see a typical Smyth goal again.
ReplyDeleteSmyth. It could be 2003.
ReplyDeleteWas there ever a question about how he would score the first one back?
ReplyDeleteI really missed that guy. Such a Ryan Smyth goal too.
ReplyDeleteWhy'd they ever trade him anyway? :-)
ReplyDeleteBouchard didn't put that in? The curse might be in trouble.
ReplyDeleteOilers have played a good period, the drunken Russian included.
Peckham just killed that guy.
ReplyDeleteKhabibulin looking good tonight in front of the keystone cops.
ReplyDeleteKhabibulin is playing to his strength, stick handling the puck.
ReplyDeleteYeow.
And THEN NK sends a bomb into the slot.
ReplyDeleteWow, has Heatley always been this slow?
ReplyDelete"Khabibulin playing with ice water in his veins".
ReplyDeleteYeah. 80 proof ice water.
Overall a very good period I thought, although that sloppy stuff will cost the Oilers.
ReplyDeleteSmyth is acting 20, in a good way.
ah crap. Tencer tweets Hemsky wasn't on the bench for the last few shifts. Shittle.
ReplyDeleteHemsky not on the bench...and so it begins.
ReplyDeleteUh oh - where's Hemmer?
ReplyDeleteIt would seem so right to me if Smytty ends this streak.
link: http://www.seeon.tv/view/20693/NHL_%40_8.00PM
ReplyDeleteWell those were two great shifts to start the game for Hemmer...
So it begins, in game 2...
ReplyDeleteWell I hate to say this but you can't sign him to a big, long term deal. Dammit.
ReplyDeleteVERY nice defensive play there by Gilbert.
ReplyDeleteHemsky: sore shoulder, won't return.
"Sore shoulder" - well the question is - is it the shoulder he had the surgery on? Because he was awhile into training camp before he said it was even ready... maybe it wasn't? And they're being extra cautious?
ReplyDelete94 playing for the parents! Secret weapon!
ReplyDeleteBoth of Hemsky's shoulders are glass.
ReplyDeleteDo you think Hemsky is going to retire soon?
ReplyDeleteLander up with RNH and Hall... as much as I like Lander, not sure he has the speed for that line.
ReplyDeleteBut then one can sign Hemsky to a short one-year deal, which from the OIlers perspective is not such a bad thing, postponing the ultimate decision until one has a better idea how much Hall and gang are going to cost.
ReplyDeleteIt's 6 months MINIMUM to recover from the surgery Hemsky had.
ReplyDeleteHe had his surgery first week of March... so, hopefully he didn't re aggravate anything and the Oilers are just being precautions...
Nah. He'll become hockey's Tommy John, when he leaves the Oilers some surgeon will perform new miracle surgery that allow him to play for the Red Wings until he's 50.
ReplyDeleteWell THAT was a nice save.
ReplyDeleteLander top line.
ReplyDeleteLT: I think someone checked Khabibulin's water bottles between periods. He looks better.
ReplyDeleteYou can see the differnce 83's leaving made to the 1line. Too bad, they were developing chem.
ReplyDeleteThings were lookin shit for a few shifts there. With Hemsky out, our 1-line is pinned in it;s own end. I think more realistic line shuffle is in order.
ReplyDeleteHemsky-hall-Hopkins were looking so awesomely dangerous out there- damn!
ReplyDeleteCould almost sneak Omark in there with Ales' uniform on.
ReplyDeleteWell Tyler's defensive breakout chart is going to be an empty whiteboard this period.
ReplyDeleteMan, Barker likes to jailbreak even on the PK.
ReplyDeleteJones with a beauty chance, awhile before it Peckham with a beauty backcheck on Heatley.
ReplyDeleteJones has to score there.
ReplyDeleteAlso, Renney's running a weird bench again. Why so much icetime for Lander?
Hemsky lasted 4 periods.
ReplyDelete4 periods.
That's just great. I know, I know, "if he can stay healthy.....yadayadayada."
huctfail: the thing that happens when Hemsky tries to rehab his huct.
That period reminded of last year.
ReplyDeleteTime to sacrifice another chicken.
Just got home from work-missed the first period and most of the 2nd-what happened to Hemsky?
ReplyDeleteffs
At this point it's crazy to trade him because he's such a dynamic player, and it's even crazier to sign him long term.
ffs
Gerta: Shoulder, don't know when it happened. He left the bench shortly before the end of the first period and the Oilers muzzled the doctor before he could speak.
ReplyDeleteffs
ReplyDeleteKhabbi looks... not that bad tonight?
ReplyDeleteGreat bail out for Sutton. Nice job saving the goal.
Weird off topic thing - Does anyone else notice that Smid often gets a little out of control when he slides to block a shot? I know it's a good defensive move but he seems to often get almost tied up with the goalie... he's so close he might impede the goalie's movement. It often makes me cringe a bit.
Smid's a close talker.
ReplyDeleteIf it is reasonable to expect from a sophomore player, Hall has an opportunity to step-up in Hemsky's absence. To my eye, Hall is possibly too willing to go it on his own, and on a line with Hemsky that's possible. Hemsky will cover for him and set him up if he gets to the right spot. Hall will need to elevate his line-mates in the third, and I think we all know it's possible.
ReplyDeleteJust got home, game story so far? Hold the obvious Hemsky injury jokes please. Too depressing tonight, might be able to joke about it tomorrow.
ReplyDeletejon k: The Oilers started well, the first period was encouraging. Since then, Hemsky's injury seems to have exposed the club's lack of depth up front and the blue have started chasing the puck (which is in EDM's end far more).
ReplyDeleteNK has had a very good night imo.
Horcoff with the crisp pass.
ReplyDeletehere we go
ReplyDeleteFucking moron Wellwood. You don't take the dive on a breakaway.
ReplyDeletedg
ReplyDeletefree preview of Center Ice channel 353 Shaw in BC...not sure if that helps you...
dorito: The Jets game is on tsn.
ReplyDeleteHm that's encouraging about NK, but the downside is that it might mean less starts for Dubnyk.
ReplyDeleteThere's been some ugly turnovers in the third already.
If Hemsky loses substantial time for another shoulder injury I can't help but wonder if this season is the beginning of the end of his career. Are we seeing long term effects of his shoulder surgeries? Bah.
lt:
ReplyDeleteSportsnet's got the blue screen of death in Manitoba.
Ack! Well that's horrible. Damn.
ReplyDeleteSeeing Peckham bad so far. Tough assignments in the third so far though as he appears to be hard matched versus the Heatley line.
ReplyDeleteDG - I have a number of friends in Winnipeg who were bemoaning the blackout of Oilers games in "Jets Territory" the other day. Sad to have cultivated fans in other places and then have them lose the feeds.
ReplyDeleteWhy does Renney refuse to play actual offensive players 4 on 4? RNH has yet to play 4 on 4 that I seen. Nice pp line up. Horcoff, Smyth and Jones.
ReplyDeleteI've decided I don't like Renney.
Let's just constantly try different random pp line ups. Even though we had a whole week of practice.
Big time interference on that last Minnesota chance, no call. Freaking Lemaire.
ReplyDeleteif knot kfor khabby... yeesh
ReplyDeleteWhen do we play Ottawa? Need some offense.
ReplyDeleteWarming to Sutton.
ReplyDeleteSutton is a yea; Barker a nay.
ReplyDeleteSutton has made a couple of nice subtle plays.Petry needs to move the puck faster.
ReplyDeletePetry has been decent I think.
ReplyDeleteWhen Whitney comes back I wonder who sits. Would have to think either Barker or Petry. Politics says Petry but I'd like to see the kid play with 6. Would be good for him and for the team imo.
RNH benched? Hmm. If you're going to keep him up then play him. If he isn't ready, send him back.
ReplyDeleteAs for Hemsky what can you say. Love the guy but his shoulders seem to be fucked.
ReplyDeleteTerrible.
BDHS: Someone will get hurt before then. :-)
ReplyDeleteLT: these last two teams have played a very defensive game. For the Wild, that's to be expected, but Pittsburgh seemed to want to slow things down and clog up the ice without Malkin or Crosby.
ReplyDeleteFor all the talk about having zero tolerance for headshots and calling everything, I'd really like the NHL to look into a return to 2005-06 standards for some of the hooking and holding. Just about every time a Minnesota player is on the forecheck, they're smacking the Edmonton players with their sticks.
Renney simply has to put eberle and hall back together. The smyth belanger eberle line is awful.
ReplyDeleteCactus: Yeah, it's coming back a little more each season.
ReplyDeleteRookie error by Petry there. Of course Horcoff did it too. Who's Anton Lineder?
RNH was making a bunch of plays that just don't work in the NHL. I wouldn't call it a benching, more a "look and learn" moment.
ReplyDeletePetry is having a bad game, Potter will make the next game I bet.
ReplyDeleteOilers aren't going to win many road games playing like this.
ReplyDeletewhy not put Smyth, RNH and Ebs back together - that one seemed to work fairly well in camp and doesn't seem like a compromise even with full NHL opponents.
ReplyDeleteRNH was on with two minutes left, probably just wanted him to have a look at things.
ReplyDeleteLT - yeah no kidding eh?
Gilbert is a little snarly this year. Doesn't hurt.
Khabi had great game. I still hate everything about the way Renney is running the lines.
ReplyDeleteJeez Paajarvi is a beauty skater. Too bad Horc's stick was way up in the air.
ReplyDeletePLAY THE KID. He can check.
ReplyDeleteReally quite a bad game for Hall.
ReplyDeleteUh oh. The dreaded "triangle" formation on the PK.
ReplyDeleteWe're doomed.
Hall makes a terrible play there. Turns back into traffic, turns the puck over, get beat back and tajes a penalty. Awful.
ReplyDeleteThey dont deserve a win if it works out that way
That's not a hook. Never has been and never will be. What a joke.
ReplyDeleteWell this actually IS a lot like those drives up the canyon. :-)
ReplyDeleteGotta hand it to Khaby, he's earned us at least a point tonight.
ReplyDeleteLMHF: it's a hook if they're calling all the little penalties. They clearly were not.
ReplyDeleteOther than the giveaway Horcoff has had another solid game.
ReplyDeleteAnd Smid's work on the PK, very nice.
Nice kill.
Hall has been only so-so.
Will be interesting to see how the lines suss out now. If 83 is gone for a while Omark will get his chance to strut his stuff and Petrell will be up for a while.
Damien Cox thinks Scandella should have gotten a penalty shot. Lordy.
ReplyDeleteHall was on forever on that shift where he took the penalty, I think he was on his third linemate.
ReplyDeleteTambellini is in his office, smiling. "See, it took awhile but Nik IS the MVP. Good dog, good dog Lassie."
ReplyDeleteTheses lines have to change. Zero chemistry
ReplyDeleteMy take: hall rnh eberle
Smyth horcoff jones
Paajarvi lander omark
Eager/hordi Belanger. Petrell
Eberle makes it look so easy..
ReplyDeleteJust wonderful.
Why won't Hall go forehand?
ReplyDeleteUgh. Bad shooting after Eberle.
ReplyDeleteGot what they deserved.
ReplyDeleteThis team looked bottom five worthy tonight.
Lemaire's mind control. That damn combover!
ReplyDeleteI rank Eberle ahead of Hall, in every respect.
ReplyDeleteHe's just fantastic.
How many times do the Oilers players not get a shot on net during the shootout. WAY TOO MANY TIMES.
ReplyDeleteMake the goalie do something.
(nice to get a point in Minny)
We'll see a lot of this on the road this year.
ReplyDeleteThat last change makes a big difference with line matching especially for the kids.
Renney did what I expected by giving the veterans plenty of icetime, especially late. Sadly by doing that we sacrificed the offense.
Unless it is Nugent-Hopkins as centre, Smyth and Eberle should not be on the same lines.
ReplyDeleteSneaking into the "killzone" close to the net is part of Eberle's repertoire, but Smyth set up shop there and clogs it up with defenders.
And I know I am in the minority here, but I don't like Taylor Hall with Hemsky at all. NH3 has three guys who need to lots of puck touches.
Have to give Khabibulin credit for a nice game tonight. Settled down and played well.
ReplyDeleteHall seems to be forcing everything right now.
word verification is sweevari: put the swedes out there already.
So Taylor Hall you have an shootout opportunity to win the game in Minneapolis and... time to try a practice move on a goalie with nervous boots in the net? No reason for that at all. Awareness Taylor. Not smart hockey. Go in and rip one... make Backstrom have to actually save the game for his team.
ReplyDeleteInstead, the game is over, we lost there once again, 18 straight and counting?
Good lord, you guys. Hall beat his guy, didn't finish. He's struggled early but he did last year too. It's a little early to be this angry, right?
ReplyDeleteI mean, they're 1-0-1. In Bettman's NHL that's pretty good.
Nugent-Hopkins was 13% (1W 7L) on face-offs.
ReplyDeleteYikes
LT: I for one would like to have seen more situational awareness from Hall in the shootout.
ReplyDeleteOmark did the same thing the other night (terrible choice) but it is a little more acceptable to do it at home with your team up in the shootout... Still its irritating and it's a pattern that seems to have carried over from last season.
It's still sweet to get the single point... more than they deserved to be sure this night.
Hall is trying to do it on his own. He seems to lack hands all of a sudden? Or is it bad decisions to go in 1-on-3. I'm not sure which. Did he score a lot in junior mostly because of his speed rather than his hands? The NHL opponents seem to have the book on his skate-as-fast-as-I-can-going-wide routine now, and neutralize it quite well. So now his move is stickhandling through three defenders.
ReplyDeleteI know, I know, don't criticize the golden boy, but I think the pressure should and will always be there for the first overall pick, so he might as well get used to it. He's a big talent, but needs to make better decisions. Fortunatly he's young, and a lot of what happened in the first two games can be chalked up to inexperience. In contrast, I like how RNH pulls up and waits for support when he doesn't have numbers.
That was boring hockey. No match for the first game from an entertainment point of view, and the first game wasn't that interesting either. Still a better effort than what I was expecting after the 4 day break.
So much for MTL over CGY. Good thing I don't bet. ;)
IMO, they are lucky they didn't lose 3 or 4 - 1 in regulation.
ReplyDeleteOutchanced especially in the third, we knew there would be days like these. They just don't have anyone who can match up with the Koivu line for starters.
ReplyDeleteStill I would submit that this is a better team than last year. Good goaltending both games. PK has been better. Gilbert and Sutton have been good and I think Smid is much improved.
Look forward to Whitney's return. Should give them two reasonable pairs.
Hemsky is a killer. Best player and he can't stay healthy. Here's hoping he's back soon. If not they will have to figure the lines out. Maybe Horcoff with Hall and Eberle?
Give Ted the Swedes and shelter them.
Belanger with Smyth and who? Jones? Call up Teemu?
Start there.
I was okay with Hall's SO move. I like that move, and many players have had success with it. He just about had it.
ReplyDeletePajaarvi had a great backcheck late in the game to get the extra point in an ill-advised Gilbert pinch. A certain 2 on 1 turned into nothing because of great defensive awareness.
Ashley - well he played well with Ted and Hemsky, maybe once Ales went down he figured he'd try and do it himself? He'll be okay.
ReplyDeleteTed is brutal on the draws but damn he's an absolute thief when it comes to getting that puck.
Hall's style is divisive by its nature I think. He's certainly biased toward holding onto the puck rather than distributing it. It can be frustrating to watch when he's not performing well.
ReplyDeleteMaybe he just starts slowly though? I'd prefer that to the Cullen alternative.
ESPN still shows 1-1 with five of six shooters posted. They have, however, marked the game "final" and posted the three stars. That Insider subscription for real time updates is a real man's spiff.
ReplyDeleteOh! Three minutes later, finally have the last three shooters. Final and complete. Well done.
Why do I have this image of Hemsky in both gurneys of the M*A*S*H copter at the same time? Must have been some kind of editing error in post production.
And yeah, I've been there, man. At a six year old with a younger brother and sister we sat on the side of a steep upgrade somewhere in the vicinity of the Fraser canyon and watched the radiator do it's cooling tower imitation. Dark green Plymouth station wagon pulling a small Shasta trailer. Hot as Hades. 103 in the shade.
Hate to say it, but no white knuckles in my youth. Except that time we borrowed Grandpa's Mercury 454. The old boat was barely purring and we were hurtling toward Calgary at 85 MPH. How come all the other cars are going so slow? Hey look, Mom is doing 85! Mom was a church lady--in real life. We were all thrilled to see her take a walk on the wild side, even if she didn't know it.
The intertubes say it was probably a mere 428 (7 litre); perhaps the Mercury Marquis, though I recall distinctly less front side grill work. We always called it a 454. Gramps was briefly an auto mechanic himself, among many other careers after farming.
As a child in the Stettler outback my father learned the joys of those old one cylinder trackers backfiring. Instant reverse. Nice. Try not to mount whatever you were towing.
One time he had turned off the road across a small ditch and had an insta-reverse moment at the bottom, with the plow above and behind him. Try not to be mounted by whatever you were towing. A little fighter pilot pedal work for Dad.
From the stories I've heard about the crank start, miracle he still has both arms. In case anyone wondered where those old farm boys from the Summit series got their reaction time.
Just finished watching on the PVR.
ReplyDeleteGood game by NK, nice to see.
Once 83 went down (fuck), 4 tried to do it all himself every shift. He draws 2-3 guys to him every time he has the puck, he needs to use that his advantage and use his team mates more.
Smid had some really good defensive plays, his stick seems better.
Saw Sutton good.
Agree with everyone that the forward lines look like them have no chemistry.
Mind you, chasing the puck in the neutral zone because there is no cohesive break out will do that to you.
There seems to be a jail break whenever an Oiler D gets the puck and they aren't good enough to do that. More support and 2-3 passes before the blue line will help.
When Whitney gets back and there is a D other than Gilbert who can make that pass, they can go back to breaking fast, until then the D is outmanned and needs support.
Petry can make that pass too, but he can't under pressure yet, and with the D the Oilers have every coach in the NHL will play a high pressure forecheck against these guys.
Nice 2:59 by Hordichuck.
Front end styling looked a lot like the 1969 Mercury Marauder X-100. I mean, the car looked like nothing from the outside. Or perhaps it looked like a giant brown Transformer turd squatted out of a hexagonal alimentary canal at not-quite diamond-forming hydraulic pressure.
ReplyDeleteI sure wish my grandpa had Facebook back in the day. Me, I can do without it.
I totally missed the game.
ReplyDeleteWhat happened to Hemsky?

Hemsky...?
ReplyDeleteApparently he was extruded out of a six-sided anus at 6 Gigapascals.
I have no idea other than sore shoulder because the bloody game wasn't being shown down here. But on the other hand I scored free tix to Tuesday's match at the Saddledome today so I aint bitchin bout nuthin.

Is neither an option?
Horcoff on the shootout? Ahahaha. Atta boy Renney. I hear the Budwesier Clydesdales are in next years Run for the Roses too.

ReplyDeleteHemksy's shoulder - about as rock solid as the American economy. RT @NHLbyMatty:
Renney on Hemsky' shoulder inj: "It's sore. It's not fatal. He'll be back." Same shoulder (right) had surgery on in March
Holy crap. PM Freaking Bouchard went pointless. Maybe the tide is changing around here after all...
ReplyDeleteJust a mess of a game, really. Hemsky goes down and you move Lander up there? There's something very wrong with your lineup if this is your first recourse.
Hall trying to do it all again. He's going to need some reigning in if we don't want the sophomore slouch to kick in. He looks frustrated and it's just going to get worse.
Paajarvi has looked very good in the first two games now. Strong on the puck and the speed is incredible. Saw one play where Jones received a pass and tried skating into the zone while Paajarvi came from well behind him, blew by him in the same amount of strides and nearly went offside.
Speaking of skating, I enjoy watching Sutton glide over the ice like a curling rock nearing the button. He looks pretty decent when he's not touching the puck.
Khabibulin had a good game but there were a heck of a lot of muffin shots aimed at him.
Hemsky - You can't trade him if he's hurt! Right? I dunno...It worked last year.
Smyth looks like a saavy veteran out there. It's kind of a shame that he's going to (probably) play out his career with a team of youngsters getting their feet wet.

Bah - who would have thought the most impressive thing about the Oilers this evening was going to be NK...
ReplyDeleteThat city just sucks the life out of the Oilers.
The one thing with Hall is that even when he has a tough game (like I said, he looked like he was forcing it), the fact is this kid tries hard every shift.
ReplyDeleteMaybe too hard - which is what I mean by forcing it, trying to put the entire team on his shoulders to make something happen. Would much rather it be something like that than say something like Rowbert Nielsen who approached the game with too much indifference.
As he becomes more comfortable with his linemates he's going to be fine.
And at least we came out of the game w/a Bettman point.
Horcoff on the shootout? Ahahaha. Atta boy Renney. I hear the Budwesier Clydesdales are in next years Run for the Roses too.
ReplyDelete"Dear whining fans who think Horcoff was a bad choice for the shootout. His career total was 9-17, 53%. He's 4th all time for players with more than 10 attempts. Go complain about the weather."

spoiler:
ReplyDeleteI live in Airdrie and had the game on.I have Bell satellite.
I watched it on Sportsnet West.
Also with Bell you get both the Oilers and Flames channels.
It's obviously subject to change, but the Oilers' website does have Dubnyk at the top of the depth chart for this game. It also has Omark listed as the 13th forward, so it's clearly been updated.

I think Hall is trying to pick up exactly where he left off, which would be near impossible at his stage in life. He's probably thinking to himself "it would suck to play meaningless games in November". Can't say I blame him. Just because he needs it to happen, doesn't mean it will.
ReplyDeleteHe's not the kind of guy who takes a called third strike when he's behind in the count. That comes after the extended drive train warranty wears off.

That was my lame attempt to whine about having a player on the bench who only play a few shifts.

ReplyDeleteSo Petrell makes the team as a PK demon and Renney plays him 0:06 on the PK in his first game.
