A year ago, the Edmonton Oilers rookie camp was a media bonanza. Hall, Eberle and Paajarvi were big box office and the city of Edmonton couldn't get enough of these kids. I get the feeling that this year's camp is going to be more subdued, not just because of the lack of a trio of big time prospects, but because RNH's status is so up in the air. The rookie camp and main camp are going to be a place to audition for a big league job, so a media coronation is not on the agenda. .At last year's rookie camp, the learning process was detailed by the media.
- Taylor Hall via tsn: "It was definitely faster than an OHL game. I haven't had a lot of interaction with pro guys, but you can see the guys here who have been to pro camps before. When I got the puck, I didn't have the same time that I would have had with the Spits. That was something I was expecting and I need to get used to."
- Renney on Hall: He played hard both ways. You can see there's a level of intelligence there that maybe separates him from others and certainly the way he anticipates the game. We like that. The competitiveness is obviously there. The first one is out of the way now, so good for him."
- Hall on Sportsnet: "Everyone wants to be a difference-maker. You kind of have to take a little bit less of a role some shifts and drive the net and screen the goalie and stuff like that. As the game wore on, I thought we got a lot more comfortable with each other and by the end of the game we were clicking pretty well."
ROOKIE ROSTER
- GOAL: Olivier Roy, Tyler Bunz, Adam Brown
- DEFENSE: Colten Teubert, Taylor Fedun, Martin Marincin, Jeremie Blain, Brandon Davidson, David Musil, Martin Gernat, Ryan Lowery, Tyler Schmidt, Wes Vannieuwenhuizen
- CENTER: Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, Anton Lander, Milan Kytnar, Ryan Martindale, Travis Ewanyk, Chase Schaber, Colin Smith
- LEFT WING: Curtis Hamilton, Antti Tyrvainen, Phil Cornet, Drew Czerwonka, Tobias Rieder, Brett Ferguson
- RIGHT WING: Tyler Pitlick, Kristians Pelss, Toni Rajala, Cameron Abney
These kids charter to the interior today and start playing games on Sunday. Games are streamed at the Oilers website and Sportsnet is apparently picking up some of the games. My personal belief is that the big stories this week will be RNH, Tyler Bunz, David Musil and Anton Lander. I know--big risk with those names. :-)

Does anyone know if the Oilers will be streaming any of the young-stars games??
ReplyDeleteI think I read Winnipeg will through their website.
I read somewhere that all of the games will be streamed but couldn't find it when preparing to write this post.
ReplyDeleteWell, I'll say one thing I'm not expecting from the Rookie Tournament... The Spanish Inquisition!
ReplyDeleteNot sure how much we can tell from the rookie tournament, unless there's some utter dominance by a player. I'll be tuning in to Sportsnet, for sure, but I'm more curious to see these boys against men. I'm thinking though it should be reasonable to expect better play from older rooks like Teubert than younger ones like Musil.
I do have one piece of info about the mini-camp earlier in the summer. The nephew flew off to Merrimack last weekend and I was lucky enough to be up in Edmonton to see him off. He advised that Bigos had lost his dad two weeks before the mini-camp. The poor kid was shattered by the loss and was unable to even train or prep for the camp. Hockey was the furthest thing from his mind. Needless to say, he didn't have his best showing.
spOILer: Understandable. I think we can expect the 20-year olds to compete for sure and Teubert, Fedun, etc to look more mature.
ReplyDeleteI think Musil will see his stock jump in the next three weeks.
Yeah, you've been really liking the Musil this summer, LT.
ReplyDeleteI was pretty high on him mid-year, but he kept getting nicked on scouting reports, that I thought I must be out to lunch. Hope he's a steal but I won't be disappointed if he isn't. I'd actually like to see him go back to Jr and given a more offensive role. IIRC he has a pretty long and slow windup to his slapper (relatively speaking) and I'd like to see him work on that and also get more PP experience.
i think we can gauge to some extent a few weaknessess and stengths. for example it was apparent last season that Davidson had mobility issues and some decision making issues.
ReplyDeleteSimilar for Blaine. So while rookie tournament is not very important, it is beneficial in certain ways
I liked Musil too.
ReplyDeleteI think he was a very good pick at 31.
His draft -1 year was very nice. So maybe he was asked to be more defensive or something. PLus he was also injured during WJC or else he would have made the team.
I am certainly looking forward to Musil's next season
Oilers games will be streamed live according to their homepage. I'm not sure if all 8 games will be streamed through the Oilers site, but the first game against the Canucks will be.

Colin Smith? Lowe doing some of his kids old PeeWee teammates a favour.
ReplyDeletediskine...opposite of datkine
Don Hay had some most complimentary things to say about Musil. Along lines that much more there than he showed last tear. If that is. The case we may have the steal of the draft at that spot.
ReplyDelete@cabbiesmacker: Colin Smith is a real nice player. Edmonton native scored 21-29-50 with a shitty team in his 17-year-old season, and also received WHL Scholastic Player of the Year honours. I was and remain surprised he wasn't drafted. (See: 5'10, 157) He looked pretty decent at summer development camp, so I'm pleased to see him get another shot.
ReplyDeleteI know him well Bruce and have for many years. Size is an issue yes, but so is 50 points in 72 WHL games. I wonder if any of those came playing with Brendan Ranford, his LW back in Bantam AAA days and a last round (2010) pick of the Flyers.
ReplyDeleteMy point was Smith wouldn't be on the radar or in TC if Lowe's kid hadn't played with him growing up. Maybe there's more deserving out there?
I think this link might help some, this is where all the games were last year

@cabbiesmacker: Well everybody knows somebody. If you have a son in elite hockey you're gonna meet other people's sons in elite hockey. Does that make for a bias? Yeah, probably, but this just in: that's how the world turns.
ReplyDeleteMy own view is that if the Scholastic Player of the Year doesn't warrant a shot at a tryout camp in his own home town, the system is seriously fucked up. So I'm happy to see him get it. Looks good on both him and the Oilers.
PS: What's wrong with 50 points in 72 games as a 17 year old? That's not bad in my books.
