Oiler fans will remember the fall of 2007 when Kyle Brodziak arrived in a supreme state of readiness and put the boots to first rounders Marc Pouliot and Rob Schremp.
Hartikainen played last night and he's in the lineup tonight. There are three possible reasons: they really like him and want a long look; they are showcasing him for trade; another winger who was slated to play is unable to so they gave Hartikainen the extra work.
My guess is that #1 is the answer. I think Teemu Hartikainen is on the verge of doing what Kyle Brodziak did in 2007 fall.

Lineups
- Horcoff-Paajarvi-Omark
- VandeVelde-Hamilton-Eberle
- O'Marra-Cornet-Hartikainen
- Brule-Hordichuk-Petrell
- Smid-Potter
- Barker-Plante
- Peckham-Fedun
- Dubnyk starts backed by Roy

It's odd to conclude Harski is playing a lot becuase they're giving him a push, but Peckham is playing a lot cuz they're pissed at him.
ReplyDeleteNot saying I disagree with either conclusion, just sayin' it's odd.
Bruce: One has am NHL job, the other does not.
ReplyDeleteMy Eagles are playing like the Roughriders.
ReplyDeleteI'm all for Hartikainen making the team, so long as Schremp doesn't get pushed off the top six on opening night.
ReplyDeleteAll joking aside, who honestly thinks Schremp is going to be unhappy this season, with Swedish hotties chasing him everywhere he goes?
ReplyDeleteWe'll know how things are going as soon as the Al Gore blesses us with a picture of Sugar tits wearing Tre Kronor gonch.
ReplyDelete@hunter: As I posted on my Swedish Oil (today in fact) Schremp shouldn't be liking his time in Swden as he's ranked top-3 in the "biggest disappointment in the SEL so far"-department.
ReplyDeleteAt least Schremp is staying consistent in his level of play for his career (disappointment).
ReplyDeleteI am taking the 5 and 7 year old tonight, and am very happy I won't look out of place wearing my Eberle jersey. I suspect alot of my experience will be explaining what is happening to the boys along with watching them cheer at the completely wrong moments.
My biggest concern tonight - the 5 year old wants a Flames jersey. It might be simply that red is his favorite color, or that I am failing as a father. ;-)
No Tulupov, so I don't need to be as concerned to cover their eyes if a player starts convulsing on the ice.
WHAT? That's impossible! Doesn't Sweden have youtube?
ReplyDelete:-)
Peckham is reportedly in much better shape this training camp, coming in with 12% body fat. Objectively speaking that's not bad for a fellow with his build. He struggled all the way through camp last year, maybe they are trying to give him time to get up to pace before the games count.
ReplyDeleteThe Globe yesterday featured a two page spread by Jame Mirtle on Mikhail Grabovski (Mr 21.3), Gabriel Desjardins, and Rel-Corsi.
ReplyDeleteThe glossary covered Corsi, Qualcomp, PDO, Zone start, and PGS. Also mentioned are Sports Analytics Institute (SAI), Dan MacKinnon, Kevin Mongeon, and Mike Boyle. Talks about the Penguins adopting daily PGS reports.
Gabi cites the Bryzgalov signing as one that "pretty much any analytics department would, 100 per cent, advise you against". $200/hour, strict confidentiality of results, but he can say: "I've seen people use Corsi to make trades," he said. "I'll put it that way."
Hemsky's agent is now tweeting "Shoot, Ales, shoot" on an hourly basis. Or maybe he's commissioned a Potemkin Netflix just for Ales (Truman style) where the only movies ever in stock are Moneyball and Jerry Maguire.
We could soon see a league-wide inflation in pucks hitting the numbers. Some metrics work best when no-one is looking.
Gabi could have mentioned the Khabibulin contract instead, but even a Ouija board could reliably spell out "no ghost" and that doesn't cost you $200/hour unless it involves Madam Earbling and a third nipple.
ReplyDeleteSchremp shouldn't be liking his time in Swden as he's ranked top-3 in the "biggest disappointment in the SEL so far"-department.
ReplyDeleteGoddam MacT is holding him back in the SEL now.
That bastard never stops.
If I miss game night, LT the morning after is almost like having been there, unless the thread degenerated into a feedswap, and then it's more like tiptoeing among spent needles left behind at an impromptu flophouse, which is too bad, because I really enjoy the chode spotting that the MSM leaves out.
ReplyDeleteInteresting lineup. Potter-Smid, would like to see how that works out.
ReplyDeleteHartik... up with AHL help this time. Is he auditioning for a 4th line role after a game with the #1s? Honestly, Brule-Eager-Hartikanen could be a nice 4th line.
The Gretzky interview that was put up on the Oilers website last night is a treat. Nice to see him back in town.
ReplyDeleteInterested to see the VV-Hamilton-Eberle line and what kind of chemistry, if any, they can develop. VV will likely never amount to anything more than a 4th line centre at the NHL level, Hamilton likely won't surpass a good 3rd liner/average 2nd liner in his career (if that), and Eberle will end up being something around a good first or very good second liner, most likely.
ReplyDeleteI'm interested to see if they get some tougher minutes tonight to see if they can hold their own defensively and also create on offense.
I don't know what they're hoping for with that third line though. For Hartikainen to fully carry two average AHLers on his back??
Same with Barker and Plante. Yikes, that looks like a recipe for disaster on paper. You've got a super-aggressive offensive d-man, and a guy who may just be the easiest d-man to get around in open ice left in training camp. I'd be surprised if they don't give up one or two breakaways tonight.
Finally, LOVE the idea of putting Peckham and Fedun together. I'm a big believer in Fedun and Peckham's play has looked suspect so far, at least to my eye. I'm curious as to whether they're trying to gage where Fedun belongs on the depth chart, and I predict he'll be a lot higher up on it by the end of this camp than he was at the beginning.
With regard to Hartikainen's placement tonight, sometimes coaches do that in TC to see if the player can elevate other, lesser players.
ReplyDeleteI also think the blender might be out tonight since Hordichuk will be in the sin bin quite a bit.
MPS is looking great this camp IMO.
ReplyDeleteI look forward to the day he goes wide and blows by a defenseman - while skating backwards.
The speed looks to be improved - or maybe its quickness. Balance? Something seems to have been taken up another level. Maybe just one more year of overall strength conditioning?
I suspect we have only seen the tip of the iceberg when it comes what kind of player MPS is going to be for this franchise.
Dear Sportsnet West.
ReplyDeletePlease sort out these technical difficulties before the regular season. I would like to watch hockey tonight, but will sacrifice it to ensure a good product this year.
Thanks.
Oilers are boring. It reminds me of the Lupul year. There's just no connection between the blue and the forwards. It's either rip it out or rip it at the forward so it can be tipped in.
ReplyDeleteAt first I thought it was just the players, but now fear this is the PLAN.
Plante looking like Bobby Orr with a severe case of the yips
ReplyDeleteCaptcha: heartt - The name of the band AFTER Ann Wilson got fat.
It's probably a symptom of the outmatched D, rather than the plan.
ReplyDeleteEberle is a beauty. Fedun got undressed on one play and Potter took the penalty but I seem to be liking the new hires over Plante.
ReplyDeletePlante is aptly named. He has the speed of a cactus.
ReplyDeletelol. If his name was "tree" we could say he was lumbering.
ReplyDeleteI'm really wondering why Peckham is playing tonight.
Don't insult the noble cactus. It moves faster than Plante on his best day!
ReplyDeleteAt least Potter doesn't look terrible.
I don't see why everyone feels the need to get so prickly over a D prospect.
ReplyDeletecactus have come a long way, baby!

I imagine eating that plant would be a more enjoyable experience than listening to this intermission show.
ReplyDeleteSometimes you make me so very sad Sportsnet.

Interesting.
Does anyone have a stream for this one?
ReplyDeleteStajan played 4 minutes, must be hurt.
ReplyDeleteanyone got a link?

ReplyDeleteHartikainen made a nice pass there.
Thanks LT
ReplyDeleteI WAS watching that, but its been down for the last 30 minutes
Oh, damn. Sorry.
ReplyDeleteHorcoff (Omark, Paajarvi).
ReplyDeleteFedun, nice play there. Smid hurt, elbow I'd bet.
ReplyDeleteCactus won't trade for Plante.
ReplyDeleteI guess CHED will have to do :(

ReplyDeleteAny notion of when the next cuts are coming? Sometime Monday or Tuesday maybe?
ReplyDeleteDube.
ReplyDeleteThanks DSF
ReplyDeleteYeah, I'd say anytime in the next 48 hours. The roster is pretty much set, keep the 23 contracts plus Potter, Petry, RNH, Lander, Paajarvi. Hartikainen and Petrell.
ReplyDeleteThat's 30.
Obviously I didn't mean Paajarvi.
ReplyDeleteThis comment has been removed by the author.
ReplyDeleteLooks like a good list LT. Any chance Tyvainen gets a shot? He hasn't looked too bad in a checking role.
ReplyDeleteI wouldn't think they'd be that concerned with Miikka's workload, he is going to have plenty of long summers in the coming seasons.
ReplyDeleteDubnyk doing well in this new 11 versus one thingy.
ReplyDeleteLT is six beer in :)
ReplyDeleteYou know the problem with this club? Too many vets! Once they get rid of Hemsky, Horcoff and Gilbert its Boys on the Bus redux.
Damn vets holding everyone back.
is it just me, or does Dubnyk seem even bigger than last year?
ReplyDeletedifferent pads?
or have i merely forgotten how massive the guy is?
LT: Just sent you an email. Have a look and get back to me when you get a chance.
ReplyDeleteEveryone: if any of you guys are geek-savvy and familiar with web programming / xml etc, can you raise your hand? I'm getting LT's new site ready and need someone to handle a little issue thats happening when importing bloggers xml.
Omark taking his sweet time potting that one. Pretty little play by Eberle.
ReplyDeletedanny: I'm on it! I forgot how a powerplay worked, nice to see.
ReplyDeleteI could get used to Eberle and Omark on the PP together.
ReplyDeleteitsaleaf-
ReplyDeletehow's that game link working for you...?
I got choppy video that's looks like shite...the frackin home hardware commercials look great but the game is crap
Danny, are you attempting to import it into a Wordpress blog or some Wordpress Variant [Drupal]?
ReplyDeleteunsure if i know any more about this than you do.. but perhaps you should check to see if this is a character encoding issue by importing a nearly blank test blogger blog?
if that will import properly, then maybe it is an issue with the content. maybe an unrecognized character or broken tag in a post somewhere?
Jar Jar is filthy.
ReplyDeleteDanny: LOOKS FABULOUS!!!
looks like Calgary is aiming to practice their PK tonight.
ReplyDeleteEberle is the PP.
ReplyDeleteWho is this team on the powerplay and what have they done with the Edmonton Oilers?
ReplyDeleteYou might call Hall "chance" but I call Eberle "finish"
ReplyDeleteNice touch pass there by Fedun to setup Eberle.
ReplyDeleteDanny, also you might want to try running the XML through an XML validator to find any errors.
ReplyDelete.. and possibly through XML tidy in an attempt to fix.
Fedun is actually looking like a useful player. We could use more of those.
ReplyDeleteWouldn't it be great if Fedun got 30 assists on the PP and fell like that every time he made the winning pass?
ReplyDeleteBD's right, I'm in the liquor cabinet.
Gerta:
ReplyDeleteDSF's link is flawless for me.
If anyone outside the SNet-W are blacked out like me, the game is on NHL Center Ice, which is free preview now.
ReplyDeleteThe Oilers PP has been pretty decent all pre-season.
ReplyDeleteThey're just finishing better tonight, and Calgary ha been giving them a lot of space to work with.
@Gerta:
ReplyDeleteI've been watching on this feed,
http://flames-live.blogspot.com/
and it's been very smooth. As good as regular cable anyhow.
ial
ReplyDeletei was afraid of that-my shaw internet gets noticeably slower between 6-8pm-the problem is my internet feed
LT: The sexy cactus may have given you away earlier.
ReplyDeletethanks Kert/ial
ReplyDeletei've been watching the same feed since the first period-i've got problems with my internet feed
striatic, it's a size issue due to the 200,000 comments in LTs blog. Theres a few steps to take to solve the issue, i have the info to do it, but need someone that's more familiar with command line environment type stuff. I could figure it out, but would rather hand it to someone that can do it a bit quicker than it would take me.
ReplyDeleteGood call awhile back on Potter LT (RE): he looks to be safely well-rounded which bodes well for the Oilers. I wonder how Teddy/Brule/____ are feeling at the moment with their mediocre preseasons?
ReplyDeleteD after 2 (this is total minutes)
ReplyDeletePotter 16:42
Smid 14:35
Fedun 14:00
Plante 13:05
Barker 11:22
Peckham 10:56
Potter and Fedun getting a nice chance here, bet we see at least one of them with the Oilers this year.
Flames still insisting on practicing their PK ...
ReplyDeleteCogliano looks slower this year.
ReplyDeleteCogliano looks different. Must be the beard.
ReplyDeleteI really like Fedun
ReplyDeleteWith his puck moving ability, does he have a chance to actually make the club???
Brule's not making this team. no chance
ReplyDeleteBrule looks like a spare part that is no longer needed.
ReplyDeleteYea I think the new hires have come and punted Brule down to OKC, he's in the press box here if he's lucky.
ReplyDeleteitsaleaf:
ReplyDeleteI agree: poised, positional, and good mobility.
Would you think they'd keep Brule as a 13th/14th forward and let Harski play in OKC until the first injury?
ReplyDeleteGood game. I liked Eberle, Dubnyk, Omark and the Potter/Fedun.
ReplyDeleteatta boy dube
ReplyDeleteif that will import properly, then maybe it is an issue with the content. maybe an unrecognized character or broken tag in a post somewhere
ReplyDeleteUnrecognized character? Why do I vet the feeling that I am about to be purged from the annuls of LT's blog.
Danny, is this the php memory limit error?
ReplyDeletei've seen two solutions for that but none of them require the command line, just editing htaccess or php.ini to increase the memory limit .. neither of which requires command line access unless you're in a shared hosting situation and even then .. if you just need to change the CHMOD on either of those files you don't need SSH to do it, most graphical FTP/SCP clients have that built in.
.. anyway it sounds like you don't really need any help, so i will say not more, but good luck! : ]
Just back from the game.
ReplyDeleteThe D seems to be topical. Smid looks really good again. I don't know why we keep trying to trade him. This Potter guy looks really good. Fedun took some chances and got burned a few times. Looked effective other times.
Remember when Peckham was a promising up and coming player? What happened over the summer? I hope it's just rust, but he looked out of place. Not even nervous. Just like he didn't really care. Barker continues to be an enigma. I doubt he is going to be what management is hoping he is going to be. This is going to be a long year unless Dubnyk can steal the show every game or if Whitney can give us at least 60 games.
Harkening back to that Whitney trade discussion from the other thread; It's hard not to lament trading away Lubo with the return chronically injured. Want to hear something even more sickening? Word at the time was that the Ducks had offered their 2010 first round pick and an AHL D prospect for Vis. The Oilers countered that they wanted an actual NHL player in the deal, and it became Vis for Whitney plus some insignificant draft pick.
The Ducks finished poorly and ended up drafting the talented Cam Fowler with that first rounder. We could beat ourselves up all day with the retrospectoscope, but Hall and Fowler off that Spitfire Memorial championship team drafted to the same NHL team in the same year would have been game-set-match for MBS at the 2010 draft. Ouch!
Loni Anderson's ugly sister is now at quarterback for the Colts.
ReplyDeleteDanny - bang it on the side a few times- hard. If that doesn't work, kick it! If neither of those work, put it in the freezer for about 15 min.
ReplyDeleteThat's all I got.
Fookingu-what a great verification word.
back to hockey ..
ReplyDeleteDubnyk really wants that starter's job. He didn't let in a softie and has been consistent over the course of two games, so he's certainly outplayed Khabibulin.
Dubnyk is relaxed, composed and his movements look effortless. Can't say the same for Khabibulin. Even in his "good" game yesterday he let in a softie.
Edmonton Oilers
ReplyDeleteNHL_Oilers Edmonton Oilers
Sam Gagner is getting an MRI tomorrow or Tuesday. His status is uncertain at this time as per Tom Renney.
Wow.
ReplyDeleteI'm seeing Fedun REALLY good.
brule is not making a case for himself after his "assist" and the back to back penalties tonight.
ReplyDeletecan we honestly say he's been better than Lander and RNH?
he should count his lucky stars that Gagner is injured and that two rookie centres may be one too many this year.
Fedun could be this generation's Randy Greg. If he loosens up maybe he could give a good interview.
ReplyDeletecan we honestly say he's been better than Lander and RNH?
ReplyDeleteWell he has a contract in his favour.
It's not like Lander and RNH have been making it impossible to be sent down. lander's giveaway in front of the net last night for example was just horrendous. It certainly seems like a matter of time, before Brule is out, even if it isn't the start of the season.
Who's picking the stars down in Cowtown? Oilers website currently reads:
ReplyDelete1.Devan Dubnyk - EDM
2.Carter Bancks - CGY
3.Jay Bouwmeester - CGY
Yeah..ok.
Just watched the game. A couple notes ...
ReplyDeleteFedun - I thought he moves the puck very well. Panicked a couple times defensively but overall I think a half season or so in the AHL should let him work on the pro game. He seems to think it well.
Potter - I liked his game as well.
Dubnyk - Can we just call him the starter already?
Eberle - Every time he touches the puck something useful happens. Beauty.
Omark - When there is no play he lobs it towards the net. I dont get why everyone else thinks the corner is a better play.
Hartikanen - Solid player. Effective in the boards. So effective I dont know if AHL seasoning is worth it.
Petrell - Most surprised by him tonight.
Brule - done.
Horcoff - Doesnt do a helluva lot with the puck. Creates chances by outsmarting/working the opposition though. Missed him last year.
Felt better watching the D tonight. Id still push for Whitney insurance. Did I mention Eberle is a beauty?
Just back from the game ...
ReplyDeleteI got to enjoy the game between a nearly constant stream of questions and requests for refreshments (aren't they supposed to wait until teen-hood until they bankrupt me for food?) and it was an interesting one.
Potter is making a case that he sticks, or at least an early call-up. Fedun was good, but I could see him making a bunch of 5-alarm mistakes against NHL vets, so a great deal of time in the AHL would help him. I see him having a good PP specialist, 3-5 D, career in the NHL if he can pick up his defensive game, which the AHL can help him with.
Both of those guys are better than Barker at his point, who seemed pretty invisible tonight. And he was still miles better than ol' Saguaro, who was slow and beatable all night.
Eberle, well, he is working to push Horcoff out of the captainacy. And Eberle, Paajarvi and Horcoff look to provide the strongest PK the Oil have had for some years.
CVV was also great tonight, Hamilton looks very fast, needs some time tho, and Harski looked off.
Poor Khabi. He's never getting that job back from Dubnyk. He was great all night long.
Potter was the leader in this game. First star if you ask me. DD was great. But Potter carried and controlled the play the whole night. Fedun was good too.
ReplyDeleteBarker was OK, but he did have to play with Plante and he's not ready not even close.
Too bad Colten got hurt I would have liked to see him.
Potter put in the best performance for d so far in this preseason.
My one thought after all the cactus comments was that Plante is actually pretty calm with the puck, at least the moments I noticed, and made some decent passes.
ReplyDeleteSure is slow though.
Just watched the highlights and the thing that stuck out for me was the quick puck movement on both PPGs. Very un-Oiler like the last few years.
ReplyDeleteGood movement and quick crisp on the tape passes that got the Flames out of position and led to two very nice goals.
This Dubnyk character seems to have some potential :)
ReplyDeleteNothing better than watching a 3-0 victory in enemy territory. "Shutout, bitchez."
ReplyDeleteThat said, not a great game. Oil probably got beat at evens, and there weren't a ton of five bell chances by either side. Our PP shone through though.
Most noticeable factor in tonight's game was the amount of ice time Potter got. Seemed like he played half the game and accepted the extra time and played pretty damn solid. Not blow your mind spectacular, but he knows how to play within himself and was very smart positionally in all situations.
Fedun had some pretty nice moments, but all in all I'd rather see him get some experience dealing with speed and force in the A. This ain't the Ivy League anymore. It will help the riverboat side of his decision-making too.
Plante looked fine. His skating isn't great but it isn't awful either. He has long strides which can eat up a lot of ground and he was more agile than I remember. Sure could tell when the big Redwood was out there too.
Barker... Kind of the same. Decent straight ahead speed. Decent awareness. Thought offense every time he was in the ozone. Need to see more of his D. Certainly a big strong boy. Both he and Brule looked like they were forcing it a bit tonight. Brulé probably even moreso.
O'Marra looks big. Skates well. Doesn't make enough stuff happen. Made a nice move into the slot and fed a sweet pass that should've been cashed though.
Eberle... When is he not worth the price of admission? You find yourself following him everytime he crosses the blue line. He's absolute magic. He took this game and put his stamp on it. He's one of those guys, like Hall, who refuse to be denied. They want the ball when the game is on the line, no time on the clock, 3-2 count whatever.
There was a neat little headman between Horc and Paajarvi where Horc banked the puck off the boards out of his zone to an empty wing and then Paajarvi was there swooping at jet speed through the neutral zone. He pulls in the puck just as it crosses the opposing blue line and sails in on goal with the Calgary D scrambling to cover. Looked practised.
Omark played a pretty physical game tonight.
Would like to see more of Petrell. More forecheck especially. His backcheck and own zone cover were faultless tonight.
Dubnyk very solid, but a bit deep from time ti time and still has that nasty habit of not catching the puck cleanly, or controlling it cleanly, giving up unnecessary rebounds. Still a very composed shutout.
Nice to see Magnus get PK time. We need to see much more of that. Much more. He could very well end up being off the Horcoff tree with better skillz.
Danny: Importing blogger.xml into what? If it's a small problem and you're stuck, I can almost certainly provide guidance unless it's very specific to your application, and it isn't one that I know.
ReplyDeleteDid you get it to work already? If not, you can respond on this thread either with particulars or a method of contact.
Be forewarned that I'm probably too busy in the short term to help with troubles descended from Tribbles if the small problem decides to breed.
On my own battle front, I have a 100MB XML dump from a MediaWiki site of historical interest for which some record types were dumped with the wrong character encoding (before a server failure) and needs to be cleaned up, but I never find time to get around to it (round three), even after I knocked off a custom parser with Boost.Spirit (round two) that extracts the broken records needing attention in a split second of runtime. Geebus, it parses an XML MySQL dump faster than some OSes can copy a file. Fun hack.
Before that (round one) I spent a nasty half day with iconv achieving seven different shades of partial success before realizing the the fix was contingent on record type.
Tribbles. Happens every time. I really should finish that project soon.
striatic, it's a size issue due to the 200,000 comments in LTs blog. ReplyDeleteI might be abe to help with WordPress migration issues if you need it.
However, there is one simple solution:
Just start a new blog and leave this one for the hockey hall of fame? The Pens blog ultimately did something similar when they migrated from Blogger.
Danny,
ReplyDeleteDepending on what hosting company you've chosen, you could also consider asking them for help. If Lowetide's 200,000 comments on his blog is preventing you from using the Blogger import feature for WordPress, you might be able to get free help or help for a nominal support ticket fee of $10.
As I mentioned, you could always consider just launching the new WP site and worrying about importing the old content later.
I have a Hostgator VPS 7 account which cost about $160 per month, but you could probably run the new site off a Hostgator shared account for a while for less than $10 per month. They have pretty good tech support available.
Oh LT,
ReplyDeleteI didn't know you were an Eagles fan as well.
There's a lot of (years of) heartache with that team, that's for sure.
Vick is just too brittle - trading Kolb is not going to work out methinks...
I'm a fan of the Eagles too. Ever since the days of Cunningham when I was a young teenager. Not certain if it was his athleticism or the Philly fans' throwing of snowballs at Santa Claus that cemented my love of the team though...

ReplyDeleteFYI:
ReplyDeleteThe following were assigned to Oklahoma City (AHL) today:
Ryan Lowery (D)
Olivier Roy (G)
Philippe Cornet (LW)
Tanner House (LW)
Chris VandeVelde (C)
Alex Plante (D)
Milan Kytnar (RW)
Curtis Hamilton (LW)
Ryan Martindale (D)
Tyler Pitlick (C)
The Oilers also assigned Martin Marincin (D) to Prince George (WHL) and Kirill Tulupov (D) will report to Oklahoma City.
Oilers trim roster by twelve
Gernat started out his WHL career nicely: 1G 1A.
ReplyDeleteDoes that mean that Martindale and Tulupov have earned contracts? Or is it an AHL contract? Marincin went to the WHL so that clears at least one ELC from the 50 man roster.
