Oiler fans will remember the fall of 2007 when Kyle Brodziak arrived in a supreme state of readiness and put the boots to first rounders Marc Pouliot and Rob Schremp.
Hartikainen played last night and he's in the lineup tonight. There are three possible reasons: they really like him and want a long look; they are showcasing him for trade; another winger who was slated to play is unable to so they gave Hartikainen the extra work.
My guess is that #1 is the answer. I think Teemu Hartikainen is on the verge of doing what Kyle Brodziak did in 2007 fall.

ReplyDeleteI am taking the 5 and 7 year old tonight, and am very happy I won't look out of place wearing my Eberle jersey. I suspect alot of my experience will be explaining what is happening to the boys along with watching them cheer at the completely wrong moments.
My biggest concern tonight - the 5 year old wants a Flames jersey. It might be simply that red is his favorite color, or that I am failing as a father. ;-)
No Tulupov, so I don't need to be as concerned to cover their eyes if a player starts convulsing on the ice.

Peckham is reportedly in much better shape this training camp, coming in with 12% body fat. Objectively speaking that's not bad for a fellow with his build. He struggled all the way through camp last year, maybe they are trying to give him time to get up to pace before the games count.

ReplyDeleteInterested to see the VV-Hamilton-Eberle line and what kind of chemistry, if any, they can develop. VV will likely never amount to anything more than a 4th line centre at the NHL level, Hamilton likely won't surpass a good 3rd liner/average 2nd liner in his career (if that), and Eberle will end up being something around a good first or very good second liner, most likely.

I don't know what they're hoping for with that third line though. For Hartikainen to fully carry two average AHLers on his back??
Same with Barker and Plante. Yikes, that looks like a recipe for disaster on paper. You've got a super-aggressive offensive d-man, and a guy who may just be the easiest d-man to get around in open ice left in training camp. I'd be surprised if they don't give up one or two breakaways tonight.
Finally, LOVE the idea of putting Peckham and Fedun together. I'm a big believer in Fedun and Peckham's play has looked suspect so far, at least to my eye. I'm curious as to whether they're trying to gage where Fedun belongs on the depth chart, and I predict he'll be a lot higher up on it by the end of this camp than he was at the beginning.
With regard to Hartikainen's placement tonight, sometimes coaches do that in TC to see if the player can elevate other, lesser players.

The speed looks to be improved - or maybe its quickness. Balance? Something seems to have been taken up another level. Maybe just one more year of overall strength conditioning?

Theres a few steps to take to solve the issue, i have the info to do it, but need someone that's more familiar with command line environment type stuff. Danny, is this the php memory limit error?
ReplyDeletei've seen two solutions for that but none of them require the command line, just editing htaccess or php.ini to increase the memory limit .. neither of which requires command line access unless you're in a shared hosting situation and even then .. if you just need to change the CHMOD on either of those files you don't need SSH to do it, most graphical FTP/SCP clients have that built in.

ReplyDeleteThe D seems to be topical. Smid looks really good again. I don't know why we keep trying to trade him. This Potter guy looks really good. Fedun took some chances and got burned a few times. Looked effective other times.
Remember when Peckham was a promising up and coming player? What happened over the summer? I hope it's just rust, but he looked out of place. Not even nervous. Just like he didn't really care. Barker continues to be an enigma. I doubt he is going to be what management is hoping he is going to be. This is going to be a long year unless Dubnyk can steal the show every game or if Whitney can give us at least 60 games.
Harkening back to that Whitney trade discussion from the other thread; It's hard not to lament trading away Lubo with the return chronically injured. Want to hear something even more sickening? Word at the time was that the Ducks had offered their 2010 first round pick and an AHL D prospect for Vis. The Oilers countered that they wanted an actual NHL player in the deal, and it became Vis for Whitney plus some insignificant draft pick.
The Ducks finished poorly and ended up drafting the talented Cam Fowler with that first rounder. We could beat ourselves up all day with the retrospectoscope, but Hall and Fowler off that Spitfire Memorial championship team drafted to the same NHL team in the same year would have been game-set-match for MBS at the 2010 draft. Ouch!

Dubnyk is relaxed, composed and his movements look effortless. Can't say the same for Khabibulin. Even in his "good" game yesterday he let in a softie.

It's not like Lander and RNH have been making it impossible to be sent down. lander's giveaway in front of the net last night for example was just horrendous. It certainly seems like a matter of time, before Brule is out, even if it isn't the start of the season.

ReplyDeleteFedun - I thought he moves the puck very well. Panicked a couple times defensively but overall I think a half season or so in the AHL should let him work on the pro game. He seems to think it well.
Potter - I liked his game as well.
Dubnyk - Can we just call him the starter already?
Eberle - Every time he touches the puck something useful happens. Beauty.
Omark - When there is no play he lobs it towards the net. I dont get why everyone else thinks the corner is a better play.
Hartikanen - Solid player. Effective in the boards. So effective I dont know if AHL seasoning is worth it.
Petrell - Most surprised by him tonight.
Brule - done.
Horcoff - Doesnt do a helluva lot with the puck. Creates chances by outsmarting/working the opposition though. Missed him last year.
Felt better watching the D tonight. Id still push for Whitney insurance. Did I mention Eberle is a beauty?

ReplyDeleteI got to enjoy the game between a nearly constant stream of questions and requests for refreshments (aren't they supposed to wait until teen-hood until they bankrupt me for food?) and it was an interesting one.
Potter is making a case that he sticks, or at least an early call-up. Fedun was good, but I could see him making a bunch of 5-alarm mistakes against NHL vets, so a great deal of time in the AHL would help him. I see him having a good PP specialist, 3-5 D, career in the NHL if he can pick up his defensive game, which the AHL can help him with.
Both of those guys are better than Barker at his point, who seemed pretty invisible tonight. And he was still miles better than ol' Saguaro, who was slow and beatable all night.
Eberle, well, he is working to push Horcoff out of the captainacy. And Eberle, Paajarvi and Horcoff look to provide the strongest PK the Oil have had for some years.
CVV was also great tonight, Hamilton looks very fast, needs some time tho, and Harski looked off.
Poor Khabi. He's never getting that job back from Dubnyk. He was great all night long.
Potter was the leader in this game. First star if you ask me. DD was great. But Potter carried and controlled the play the whole night. Fedun was good too.

Potter put in the best performance for d so far in this preseason.
My one thought after all the cactus comments was that Plante is actually pretty calm with the puck, at least the moments I noticed, and made some decent passes.

Just watched the highlights and the thing that stuck out for me was the quick puck movement on both PPGs. Very un-Oiler like the last few years.

ReplyDeleteThat said, not a great game. Oil probably got beat at evens, and there weren't a ton of five bell chances by either side. Our PP shone through though.
Most noticeable factor in tonight's game was the amount of ice time Potter got. Seemed like he played half the game and accepted the extra time and played pretty damn solid. Not blow your mind spectacular, but he knows how to play within himself and was very smart positionally in all situations.
Fedun had some pretty nice moments, but all in all I'd rather see him get some experience dealing with speed and force in the A. This ain't the Ivy League anymore. It will help the riverboat side of his decision-making too.
Plante looked fine. His skating isn't great but it isn't awful either. He has long strides which can eat up a lot of ground and he was more agile than I remember. Sure could tell when the big Redwood was out there too.
Barker... Kind of the same. Decent straight ahead speed. Decent awareness. Thought offense every time he was in the ozone. Need to see more of his D. Certainly a big strong boy. Both he and Brule looked like they were forcing it a bit tonight. Brulé probably even moreso.
O'Marra looks big. Skates well. Doesn't make enough stuff happen. Made a nice move into the slot and fed a sweet pass that should've been cashed though.
Eberle... When is he not worth the price of admission? You find yourself following him everytime he crosses the blue line. He's absolute magic. He took this game and put his stamp on it. He's one of those guys, like Hall, who refuse to be denied. They want the ball when the game is on the line, no time on the clock, 3-2 count whatever.
There was a neat little headman between Horc and Paajarvi where Horc banked the puck off the boards out of his zone to an empty wing and then Paajarvi was there swooping at jet speed through the neutral zone. He pulls in the puck just as it crosses the opposing blue line and sails in on goal with the Calgary D scrambling to cover. Looked practised.
Omark played a pretty physical game tonight.
Would like to see more of Petrell. More forecheck especially. His backcheck and own zone cover were faultless tonight.
Dubnyk very solid, but a bit deep from time ti time and still has that nasty habit of not catching the puck cleanly, or controlling it cleanly, giving up unnecessary rebounds. Still a very composed shutout.
Nice to see Magnus get PK time. We need to see much more of that. Much more. He could very well end up being off the Horcoff tree with better skillz.
Danny: Importing blogger.xml into what? If it's a small problem and you're stuck, I can almost certainly provide guidance unless it's very specific to your application, and it isn't one that I know.

Be forewarned that I'm probably too busy in the short term to help with troubles descended from Tribbles if the small problem decides to breed.
On my own battle front, I have a 100MB XML dump from a MediaWiki site of historical interest for which some record types were dumped with the wrong character encoding (before a server failure) and needs to be cleaned up, but I never find time to get around to it (round three), even after I knocked off a custom parser with Boost.Spirit (round two) that extracts the broken records needing attention in a split second of runtime. Geebus, it parses an XML MySQL dump faster than some OSes can copy a file. Fun hack.
Before that (round one) I spent a nasty half day with iconv achieving seven different shades of partial success before realizing the the fix was contingent on record type.
Tribbles. Happens every time. I really should finish that project soon.

ReplyDeleteDepending on what hosting company you've chosen, you could also consider asking them for help. If Lowetide's 200,000 comments on his blog is preventing you from using the Blogger import feature for WordPress, you might be able to get free help or help for a nominal support ticket fee of $10.
As I mentioned, you could always consider just launching the new WP site and worrying about importing the old content later.
I have a Hostgator VPS 7 account which cost about $160 per month, but you could probably run the new site off a Hostgator shared account for a while for less than $10 per month. They have pretty good tech support available.

ReplyDeleteDoes that mean that Martindale and Tulupov have earned contracts? Or is it an AHL contract? Marincin went to the WHL so that clears at least one ELC from the 50 man roster.
