The Oilers have plenty of time to look at all of these kids, but the fact that Tulupov is getting a start this late in TC suggests that a contract is being considered by the organization. It's hard to know where he is on the current depth chart but the Oilers will play 12 defensemen this weekend and they have (by my count) 14 or 15 blue still in camp.
Here are the lines and pairings:
- RNH-Hall-Hartikainen
- Gagner-Jones-Keller
- Belanger-Green-Pitlick
- Lander-Tyrvainen-Martindale
- Barker-Tulupov
- Sutton-Gilbert
- Peckham-Petry
- Khabibulin-Danis
I'll check nhl.com after the game and post the TOI for D in the comments section.

If the Oilers can't have a good defense, and if Tulupov can avoid injuring any roster players on his own team, by all means play him! A feared but bad defense is far preferable to a bad defense that is not feared. All the good Oilers teams seemed to have a defender that smashed people at regular intervals. Muni. Ulanov...
ReplyDelete@wg (contd from last thread)
ReplyDeleteDo we sacrifice youth development to possibly be better now?
I think rnh, lander and harski should all play major minutes in developmental leagues. We, as fans, need to get used having players come in later in their career. Jones isn't the solution but neither is harski. We're 6 or 7 belanger-type signings away from being a decent team, so let's not let that screw with proper development and later contract dollars.
Samwise was much more impressive statistically than rnh at the same age and I think we can ok back and say he was rushed -- it didn't help him or the team. I can't think of a player the Oilers haven't rushed in the last 6 years, really. Was mps really better than a dvorak singing last year? End result is going to be a more expensive bottom line as all these kids line up with games played at the next contract negotiation.
"Barker-Tulupov"
ReplyDeleteThat alone should be worth the price of admission---never mind Hall/Nugent :P
High event risk taker like Barker with a guy who gave the biggest player on our team a concussion during a no-contact intra squad game.
I'm fine with throwing Tulupov out there at the Flames.... :P
Nice picture. I thought it was bad when Tulupov nailed Hall at the JMC, and was thinking it'll be fine once they're on the same team.
ReplyDeleteApparently not.
For those of you that missed it in the last thread:
ReplyDelete"TONIGHT'S GAME WILL BE STREAMED LIVE ON EDMONTONOILERS.COM WITHIN THE OILERS MARKET ONLY (AB/SK/NWT/NU) DUE TO NHL REGULATIONS."
I think it has to do with not depressing all of North America.
ReplyDeleteI think it's because they're already in regular season(terrible) form and it's not even the regular season. After all, this season already looks like shaping up to be another death march, right from the opening game.
ReplyDeleteThey're going to be the the West Ham United of the NHL this season - all offence and to hell with defence, except West Ham would be relegated for finishing at the bottom of the EPL, instead of being rewarded with still another chance at a near-guaranteed future all star pick.
Tulupov will be a fan favourite after tonight.
A couple of thoughts about topics discussed on this afternoon's Really Big Shew..
ReplyDeleteHemsky's contract looks good today; the Cap was 39 million when he signed it.
The simplest, and perhaps best, way to re-align the divisions is to have Winnipeg move into the North, Vancouver to the Pacific and Dallas to the South.
On the webcast thing, will a proxy server fool Oilers.com?
ReplyDeletekris: Donald Sutherland used to call collect from wherever he was shooting a movie and call the radio station in Montreal. They would put him on hold so he could hear the radio broadcast.
ReplyDeleteLT,
ReplyDeleteCan I video phone you while you hold the camera up to your TV so I can watch the game?
I'll pretend to be Donald Sutherland, and I'll phone collect.
ReplyDelete:)
kris: Sure. Call 555.555.5555. :-)
ReplyDeleteIt's not working, LT.
ReplyDeleteMaybe you can take as many pictures of the screen as possible and then print them and send them to me. I'll make a flipbook out of them and it will almost be like I saw the game.
:)
Or, I'll just not watch.
On the webcast thing, will a proxy server fool Oilers.com?
ReplyDeleteMore than likely yes, but the free proxy servers are super slow and have small bandwidth limits.
kris: lol. Back when I was a kid, they didn't used to publish the baseball boxscores. It was so freaking stupid, they'd publish the linescore. I'll give you an example:
ReplyDeleteLA 000 100 000 1 7 1
SD 300 000 300 6 12 0
Reuss (L, 0-4) (5), Hough (7), Brewer and Yeager.
R Jones (W, 11-7) and Kendall.
HR: Winfield (7).
That was it. ALL. Randy Jones beat Jerry Reuss and Winfield hit a homer.
Honest to God.

ReplyDeleteThe Oilers are streaming the warmup with what looks like no restrictions.
Get in there!!!
Oilers really look tentative during the pre-game warmup.
ReplyDeleteIt's like they already can't wait for the season to end, lol.
http://www.lshunter.tv/hockey-live-streaming-video.html
ReplyDeleteJones isn't the solution but neither is harski. We're 6 or 7 belanger-type signings away from being a decent team, so let's not let that screw with proper development and later contract dollars.
ReplyDeleteA Finn is the answer to any hockey question.
A big strong winger with hands is a huge hole in this line up and Harski fills it.
He's plated a full year of big minutes in the AHL, showed well in his NHL call up last year and is killing it at camp by all accounts.
I'm usually lead the charge when talking about not rushing kids, but Harksi isn't being rushed and he won't be thrown into the top to sink or swim.
He's the right choice and he's ready.
I think Lander should start in OKC to learn the faster smaller ice game. He'll only need to get called up once.
This isn't about throwing juniors into top 6 NHL positions.
These are good hockey players who should earn spots on the roster.
Is the stream up and working for anyone in the Edmonton area?
ReplyDeleteWoodguy is correct. Finns are the answer to everything. They probably drink MORE than us!
ReplyDeleteOk, listen up friends. I live in Vancouver and I have bypassed the regional restrictions. Because I don't want this read the the hole closed, email me kingweee at gmail.com.
ReplyDeleteI clicked submit too soon.
ReplyDeleteE-mail me if you want instructions. Do it quickly, I want to watch the game when the puck drops.
kinger: The storm is coming. A giant Laforge will be there in minutes. BYE KINGER!
ReplyDeleteThe blackout rules are the NHL's, not the Oilers.
ReplyDeleteI'm in Toronto now, and even if I were to buy Centre Ice, the Oilers games would be blacked out if the Leafs were playing.
The rules are archaic. People don't just root for teams in the cities where they live anymore. If I could get a quality stream of Oilers games legally, I would pay for it.
I appear to be getting the stream on the oilers site. It's all pregame fluff at the moment. Sounds like the Battlestar Galactica soundtrack.
ReplyDeleteThe bypass method *should* work anywhere in the world. However, it *may* only work for Shaw customers (Canada wide).
ReplyDeleteThe game is being streamed on the Flames website with no restrictions. But, also with no commentators just video.
ReplyDeleteLooks like the finally figured out how to turn the commentators on.
ReplyDeleteThe stream is working on the Flames website
ReplyDeletehttp://video.flames.nhl.com/videocenter/console?catid=11&id=124557
Streaming is out here in BC.
ReplyDeleteFlames website has a better feed.
ReplyDeletejust keep clickinpon play game.
ReplyDeletethe Oilers regional pay wall is weaker than the Bulin wall.
Laforge is scowling, kris. You better make like Ray Liotta and watch for choppers.
ReplyDeleteI am on the east coast, getting the Frelbo-supplied link. Thanks much. The restrictions irritate me to no end.
ReplyDeleteGodot: it's not a question of where the fans are. The blackout rules are in place so that teams can monopolize their local media markets and extract as much revenue from their local channels as is possible. It's really frustrating for us Edmonton fans out of region, but there are positive benefits. Imagine if the Leafs were playing at the same time as the Oilers - without blackout restrictions, the Leafs could charge a boatload more for their broadcast, even in markets outside of Ontario, and the revenues of teams like the Oilers would shrink.
ReplyDeleteI, for one, will not stand by and see the Leafs benefit any more than they already do.
@suntory
ReplyDeleteGo to flames.com
LaForge is in charge of the Oilers stream :)
Gagner looks very quick.
ReplyDeleteBORRRRINNNGGGG!
ReplyDeleteSorry, meant to say streaming is ok out here. Not out. :)
ReplyDeleteThanks tho DSF
begod- what oil fans say to Hall.
tulopv and peckham suck at hockey, no?
ReplyDeleteIs it me, or does Gagner look like an adult this season?
ReplyDeletePS: Nice to see Oilers playing Bay City Rollers music, proving that they're staying abreast of modern trends up there.
Petry is not having a great camp. IMO
ReplyDeleteMONEY HONEY!
ReplyDeleteI am a Shaw customer and it's working in Vancouver.
ReplyDeleteAnyone else see #13 and instantly think Cogs?
ReplyDeleteBarker=Foster. Who knew?
ReplyDeleteFINNS BABY!
ReplyDeleteMichaels at least knew they are the hounds.
ReplyDeletewho are the commentators? They are pretty entertaining. Excuse the ignorance if they are the radio guys. I usually watch on centre ice
ReplyDeleteI hope Lander and Harski are still on OCB when they come to play in Abbotsford. SHould be fun tearing up the Heat.
ReplyDelete"Barker = Foster"
ReplyDeleteSo that means the oppo will only hope to contain Barker, not stop him.
oh shit.
ReplyDeleteGagner looks hurt
Crap, that didn't look good for Gagner.
ReplyDeleteoh, gagner into the boards hard and awkwardly. that's not good.
ReplyDeleteI'd guess shoulder.
ReplyDeleteWell, if you didnt already dislike Jones; one more reason.
ReplyDeleteLooked liked knee live.
ReplyDeleteO Nikolai (facepalm)
ReplyDeleteKris:
ReplyDeleteAs another USA-based Oilers fan, $20 a month for NHL GameCenter on computer (or better yet, iPad) to watch all 82 Oilers games is a pretty good deal.
BTW - the feed works here too!
Rick, is that paid each month or all at once at beginning of season?
ReplyDeleteRick
ReplyDeleteAnd you can stream the iPad games to your big screen using Airplay if you have Apple TV.
Works flawlessly.
On Gamecenter, in BC would any of the games be blacked out other then the ones on TSN or CBC?
ReplyDeleteAny word on Gagner?
ReplyDeleteVox-I live in Squamish and had Center Ice the last 3 years with Bell Expressvu-the only blacked out games were the Canucks games in Vancouver that were PPV games-so maybe 1 per year. And I don't think there are any more PPV games.I'm assuming Game Center is/was the same.
ReplyDeleteI'm with Shaw now and I haven't purchased Center Ice yet..and I may not this year.
Not on the bench yet.
ReplyDelete@voxwah
ReplyDeleteOnly if they are on TSN or in-market SN.
All CBC games are streamed on cbc.ca
TSN has a mobile TV app and I would think SN will follow suit soon.
Lol Jones.
ReplyDeleteAtta boy Flow!
ReplyDeleteShall we call Jones, Mr Opportunity ?
ReplyDelete@DSF
ReplyDeleteThanks for the information. Cheers.
what happened to Gagner??? I've been barbecuing and missed part of this one.
ReplyDelete@Jake73
ReplyDeleteGamecenter is either paid for all at once or month by month.
NHL also has a PS3 app to watch games on the TV.
Barker's a little like Grebeshkov, only he needs 10x the tinfoil or 1/10 the acid.
ReplyDeleteJay - awkward play involving Jones and a flames defender that sent gagner falling into the boards awkwardly
ReplyDeleteThe advantage with Game Centre is you can actually watch 4 games at once if you choose to do so and some of their in-game features are amazing.
ReplyDeleteYou also get full access to archived and classic games, game highlights etc..
On Centre Ice, you have to flip channels and don't get any of the other features.
Rick, thanks.
ReplyDeleteI have no tv or Al Gore today (just crackberry, did 28 hurt 89 again?
ReplyDeletetried to watch the Oiler website feed on my i-pad..Says incompatible...any ideas??
ReplyDeleteI think we need to have a conversation about Mister Jones before the pre-season is out.
ReplyDeleteunca miltie, it is a Flash based video stream.
ReplyDeleteiPad doesn't support Flash.
Rob Brown says Jones was another excellent signing. More of the kind this team needs.
ReplyDeleteSo there you go, that ends the discussion ... lol
I was afraid of that..thanks.
ReplyDeleteThanks LMHF#1
ReplyDeleteKlefbom played 12:59 in his second SEL game. 0-0-0 E.
ReplyDeleteWhat is the HD quality of game center like DSF...?
ReplyDeleteIs it offered on some games?most games?all games?
I just took a quick look and it's $50 cheaper than CI and it's mobile..I may check it out this year-I've got the toys in the house to get it to my TV.
tried to watch the Oiler website feed on my i-pad..Says incompatible...any ideas??
ReplyDeleteYeah, there's a few browsers for the ipad that support flash... like skyfire.
So... Is everyone just going to ignore the fact Rehabi's made some nice saves tonight???
ReplyDeleteI mean if your gonna run him over & back up again...
Teemu with 5 brilliant plays in one shift. Guy is amazing.
ReplyDeleteWrath: Let me back the truck over him a couple more times. Don't worry, I'll get it.
ReplyDeleteGerta.
ReplyDeletePristine HD quality.
Never had a hiccup last season.
well you CAN watch the stream on an iPad using the "Puffin" browser app .. but it is going to be awfully choppy.
ReplyDeleteDSF
ReplyDeleteWhat about caching/archiving?
I commute an hour to work and don't get home til after 6pm-or do you have to watch the games live?
lol...I guess I could just read their website..:)
ReplyDeletesorti-no fooling..it's really sorti
Also, with game center, looks like you have to purchase the entire season with the month to month payment option.
ReplyDeleteI just don't get why people seem mad at Khabi...
ReplyDeleteIt's not like he got drunk & put a gun to Tambi's head to get his contract, Unless...
Tencer tweets:
ReplyDeleteOilers say lower body injury for Gagner. He thinks knee. Says Gagner has been wearing a knee brace on his left knee already.
Gerta
ReplyDeleteAll games are archived and one other thing I forgot to mention is that, for each game, you can choose the feed from either of the teams.
If, like me, Gene Principe makes you want to gnaw off your ears, it's very useful.
I'm on Vancouver Island so officially out of the Canucks viewing area so no blackouts of any kind.
huh...I think I can stream it directly to my Sony TV..and I've been working with stone knives and bearskins the last 3 years.
ReplyDeleteTencer on twitter: left ankle injury for gagner.
ReplyDeletedamn.
hope it's not a bad sprain.
Cogliano (#7) playing wing against the Canucks tonight.
ReplyDeleteTwo very stood scoring chances so far.
rnh to hall
ReplyDeleteHall with the goal, A to the kid. Up 1 late.
ReplyDeleteI have a funny feeling that won't be the last time you say that Norm.
ReplyDeleteI like that that goal was scored against actual NHL defensemen too.
ReplyDeleteDSF: There's no Cogs remorse. Honest. Hope he does well.
ReplyDeletegood to see Hall smiling again.
ReplyDelete@wrath
ReplyDeleteThat was also great entry by Hartikainen, and Petry looked good there too.
Then rnh with possession, hall getting behind two veteran d (hannan, and giordano). Lots good on that shift.
I hope I get to say that lots of times too.
DSF: very good info, thanks
ReplyDeleteGerta: what are you using to put it onto your tv? (Hardware/software)
Evens
ReplyDeleteSutton 17:53
Gilbert 17:26
Peckham 16:02
Petry 14:32
Barker 13:36
Tulupov 13:20
Well, LT, you've really done it. All your talk about the roster not being pretty much set, because injuries are a possibility.
ReplyDeleteDirty tactic to jinx the team so Lander makes the roster LT, way to go!
So a possible Gagner injury opens up room for...RNH and Lander? Or do we shift someone to centre to allow the Finn to come up?
ReplyDeletespeeds: Excellent, Smithers!
ReplyDeleteInteresting that Barker got the shorter shifts. I didn't notice that he was being given offensive zone starts but I might have missed it. Are they going to shelter him this year? I hope not. It would be just like this organization to shelter him, inflate his numbers and then overpay him.
ReplyDeleteSutton 17:53
ReplyDeleteGilbert 17:26
That there is the top pair.
Nice chat today, LT.
@coach- Say it ain't so.
ReplyDelete@coach- Say it ain't so.
ReplyDeleteWith or without Whitney, it seems like that's the toughs pairing. The offensive pairing is going to be Whitney - Barker.
I'm still digging up the info right now Woodguy-I've had CI with Bell expressvu the last 3 years.
ReplyDeleteMy new Sony TV has an ethernet port-assuming my model of TV is compatible I just plug the TV into my home network and setup the subscription, register the TV with Game Center and away it goes(I really hope, anyway)
If that doesn't work I've been eyeing a Boxee Box for the last year or so..this will give the incentive to make the purchase..and early xmas gift to myself.
Boxee Box is excellent. In terms of that type of device it's the best you can get.
ReplyDeleteWe've got an actual media PC running XBMC hooked to our main TV which I used to watch the game tonight, but we also have a Boxee Box on the bedroom TV.
As I understand it, you can do Game Center Online on the Boxee Box... which I'd totally pay for if they didn't black out local games. Stupidest thing I've ever seen. If people are willing to pay for it, why would you black it out?
Just saw it tweeted that Harski was 1st star and even Brownlee tweeted that he should make the team.
ReplyDeleteFINNS WIN!
Cogs will have an awesome year playing with the best Finn of all time (and I was Kurri in a pick up game or road hockey game when I was a kid) and Koivu is pretty damn good Finn too.
The Oilers need more Finns.
Are you in the Edm area Nicholas?
ReplyDeleteI live in BC and I don't think the local blackouts apply to me(hope not anyway)
Game Center looks like a better option that CI with Shaw cable..I need to read a little more but I haven't found anything yet that will stop me from ordering Game Center.
That'll work Gerta.
ReplyDeleteWe just cut the cable cord...very tired of their multi tiered hegemony.
Netflix is only $8 per month and iTunes has a huge library that will play on all my Apple devices when iCloud arrives next month.
It's a wonderful world :)
Coach: Agreed, enjoyed it.
ReplyDeleteThe problem with a 30th place team setting their roster in July is that you end up with guys like Hartikainen and Lander in OKC and guys like Eager, Hordichuk and Brule on the roster.
ReplyDeleteI'm hoping the Oilers see what everyone else is seeing and Brule winds up in OKC.
ReplyDeleteYes I'm in Edmonton. If you're in BC you should be ok to watch everything except Canuck games.
ReplyDeleteI -believe- that if there is an EDM/VAN game that will be blacked out for you, though.
There is another option - http://www.hockeystreams.com that i've been using for the last 2 seasons with mostly good results.
Id bet brule would get claimed, and thats AOK by me.
ReplyDeleteReally liked Suttons game. Steady. Wish we had more of him(preferably with a bit better footspeed)
Stauffer is not feeling the love for Omark. He's also of the opinion the Oilers need/will do something to get a veteran dman to move the puck. He was talking Campoli and McCabe.
ReplyDeleteSpeculation on his part ? or does he know something ?
Cam Fowler is a sublime talent.
ReplyDeleteNorris quality very soon.
That kid Duco who was bugging Hall the other night is fighting Getzlaf now. Drove Lubo into JDD, started jawing. Pesky little guy.
ReplyDeleteSo ... if Gagner is out to start the season do they give a C spot to Lander or do they send him to OKC to be 1C down there and give the 4C spot to Jean Vandevelde or O'Marra?
Shitty for Gagner, he's looked solid.
Oh that eklund. his "sources"say oilers are looking for veteran top 6 help....
ReplyDeleteIsnt that what smyth, hemsky, and horcoff are for?
The oilers definitly need MORE forwards
JFj goes postal on Duco.
ReplyDeleteA suspension should follow.
JF Jacques embarrassing himself by going after Duco unprovoked. Presumably some sort of retaliation for fighting Getzlaf...which makes no sense.
ReplyDeleteGlad to see he's a waste of size and speed elsewhere too.
Do you think? I mean its typical BS but I think Duco is running around shooting his mouth off and JFJ called him on it.
ReplyDeleteI think JFJ wanted to make a statement to the coaching staff/team about his toughness, but if he wanted to fight him he should have asked, not just blazed in, uninvited, gloves off, throwing before Duco was ready to go.
ReplyDeleteI agree with that but I think the kid would have just turtled anyhow. Not that I would blame him, JFJ has 7 or 8 inches on him.
ReplyDeleteYou're probably right there, and I'm not sorry to see Duco get filled, but I'd rather it not be cheap like that, especially from a former Oiler first liner ;)
ReplyDeletelol well played
ReplyDeleteI brought up my point about Hartikainen being better right now than Hopkins the other day...Bruce requested that they be allowed to play side by side...we got that tonight literally.
ReplyDeleteTeemu won the day. Great game from him. Stepping up.
Just a quick update on some oiler prospects in the chl so far this weekend.
ReplyDeleteJ. Blain (captain) 1g 0a 1game
B. Davidson (captain) 0g 3a 2games
T. Reider 1g 0a 1game
D. Musil (assistant) 0g 2a 2games
T. Bunz 0W 1L 0T 3.04GAA 914sv%
who was the poster in July who did a study of Sutton's past few years in Ottawa, NYI and Atlanta and determined he had the best corsi or plus minus of all the Oilers dmen?
ReplyDeleteI have said five or six times that the posters here have assumed Sutton would be like Strudwick or at best Vandermeer. I have countered arguing that he has been a top 4 guy for all of the last 6 years other than last season, and was a sought after UFA when he left Atlanta - two things neither Vandermeer nor Strudwick ever were.
With Whitney injured, Sutton looks to be top 4 if not top pairing with Gilbert to start the season. Shudder if you must but I bet he is a hell of a lot better than Foster. I think if he is healthy and hasn't lost a step he will convince a few here that he is a useful player on this team.
So, after watching Sutton play tonight, what are the collective thoughts on him here? I thought he was steady, didn't get in trouble, cleared the net, and got the puck out. Maybe not a juggernaut offensively but a bit of a Jason Smith type now, not 3 years later like we are hoping on for Teubert and Musil.
ReplyDeleteDidn't see what JFJ did, but I'll go out on a limb and say Duco had it coming.
ReplyDeleteTeemu won the day
ReplyDelete3. EDM Hall (Nugent-Hopkins) 58:43
Hmmm. Wasn't that the goal that won the day?
Teemu did play well though. I was delighted to see them as a line, I'm a big fan of all three players. What I saw was all three of them help the Oilers win the day, which is what it's all about. I don't see them as competing for the same job.
As for Sutton, I liked his game tonight for the most part. Calm feet. Perhaps because they are encased in concrete, but still ...
http://www.vipbox.tv/
ReplyDeleteHockey online.
And sports that aren't hockey, too.
i wish jfj would have dealt with guys like duco while he was in oil silks. He might still be here, god forbid.
ReplyDeleteSutton with most toi at EVs. Get used to it. Barker sheltered makes gerbeshkov trade look stupider.
Remember when we rolled out lubo, souray, grebs and gilbert as our D? And we thought that was bad? How things change
@jfry: Grebs may well have been going back to Russia regardless and his trade netted Curtis Hamilton. That's a stupid trade?
ReplyDeleteGagner was apparently not hurt too seriously – he took a puck in the ankle and he may have hit his head.
ReplyDeletehttp://www.edmontonjournal.com/sports/Gagner+limps+with+ankle+injury/5455252/story.html
@bruce
ReplyDeleteTher's a lot of may and maybes in the future. My point is we had the core of a decent d ( which we called B rate back then) and there's no reason we shouldn't have at least 3 of those players still.
Count me as one who is tired of magic beans...and as a result dreading the hemsky trade.
