Tyler Bunz was the star of last night's game, adding his name to a list of impressive Oiler kids. That list includes Anton Lander, Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, Curtis Hamilton, David Musil and Ryan Martindale. The kids get a final chance tonight, once again streamed on the Oilers site and also streamed on rogers sportsnet.
Dan Tencer has the lineups and they go like this:
- Lander-Cornet-Reider
- Pitlick-Hamilton-Tyrvainen
- Schaber-Ferguson-Rajala
- Smith-Czerwonka-Abney
- Davidson-Musil
- Vannieuwenhuizen-Blain
- Marincin-Schmidt
- Adam Brown starts in goal
The blue should be fun, Musil impressed me with his ability to make plays and Davidson made some nice passes last night. Blain with the Dutchman should also be interesting and Marincin is someone to watch closely.
Flames have some nice things, especially if that first round draft pick from 2011 plays this evening. He's a beauty.
Man it was great to hear ol' Gene on the mic last night. Hopefully he doesn't have to dig too deep into the pun book this year to try and cheer us up.

ReplyDeleteBlain gets beaten far too often in the defensive zone, I'm not sure if it's foot speed, or a lack of strength, but it seems like he gives up on his man far too easily.
ReplyDeleteHa - historically I have been an optimist, but I guess I have just bought into the 5 year (or was it 6) rebuild Lowe announced.
ReplyDeleteI don't think management cares if they make the playoffs this year and that they would be happy to see a finish somewhere around 20th+. One more good draft, but enough improvement that rebellion is prevented.

ReplyDeleteHalmilton, and Pitlick have woken up a bit in the second. marincin has some decent looking passing skills. Lander has great anticipation, he's a beauty.

ReplyDeleteI'm not sure I see Marincin as good as you do. He's made a few decent passes sure, but he's also had some poor defensive zone coverage and held on to the puck longer than he should have a few times. I thought his first game was better where I really noticed his stick work. We'll see how he does in training camp, but based on this two game sample, I think he needs another year in Junior.

ReplyDeleteMarincin has some really bad habits, makes a move too many and likes to hold onto the puck too long in dangerous areas. I think another year in Junior would be best as well, because with this kind of play he'll get eaten alive in the pros.

ReplyDeleteYea, I would definitely agree that Marincin doesn't look ready. He needs to speed up the decision making, and develop/use his slapshot a little more to be a well rounded offensive D-man. Use his body to stop forwards, a little more on the rush. he doesn't have to be a crusher, but you can't get caught swinging your stick as a forward goes around you.
He looks to have some pretty nice tools though including size, skating, and the ability to make an outlet pass on the tape, unlike Blain and Davidson who have been hitting the ankles more often then not.
It'll be neat to see how the big guy develops.
The defencemen for the Oilers tonight, have been pretty bad in general. Lots of turnovers.
I like Cweronka's game. Lives around the net.

I didn't think Davidson played too badly, he had to cover for Blain all night who was a complete disaster in this tournament so far. Davidson is a late bloomer so I believe he will eventually polish his game up.

ReplyDeleteI just wanted to take a moment to ask Jonathan Willis if he reads this if he still ranks Blain and Davidson - now that we have seen them play - ahead of Colten Teubert - as he did (inexplicably in my opinion) in the Copper and Blue's top 25 under 25.
ReplyDeleteNothing like some second assists in the Q to make a guy like Blain rank higher than a top 13 overall draft pick who played in two world juniors and will most likely play 500-1000 NHL games more than Blain and Davidson put together!
Oilersfan - I like Tuebert as well, but I think it's premature to be calling 500+ NHL games for him.
ReplyDeleteGetting drafted 13th overall and playing in two world juniors means you're a very good teenage hockey player, not much more. Ever hear of Jimmy Waite?
ReplyDeleteNot saying Teubert is not going to be a player, just that using that as the basis for your argument that he is going to have a career that spans between eight to fifteen years doesn't hold any water.
This is why saw him good is such a bad idea. A tournament like this is important but only in the wider view. I think the one prospect who hurt his chances at this tournament was Teubert.
