Helene Elliott has a twitter update on Colin Fraser, looks like the Kings hope to have this thing solved "in a few weeks." I think maybe this isn't a big deal to Mr. Bettman but then again maybe they'll take away the '90 Stanley.
I kid.
The Canucks haven't released their starting lineup but they do have some good prospects. Jordan Schroeder, Yann Sauve, Niklas Jensen, Don Lever, Dennis Kearns and Poul Popiel.
Lines (courtesy Tencer):
- RNH-Hamilton-Pelss
- Lander-Cornett-Rieder
- Martindale-Czerwonka-Tyrvainen
- Smith-Abney extra forwards
- Marincin-Teubert
- Musil-Fedun
- Gernat-Lowery
- Schmidt extra
- Roy starts

Heading down to Pentiction in a few hours. Super pumped. Will be wearing my Hemsky jersey just in case Hemmer sees it and decides hanging around could be lots of fun.
ReplyDeleteBeing traded to Phoenix probably wouldn't be that desirable for him. He wants to win.
Enjoy the game Voxwah! If you get a chance, I'd love to know your thoughts on the game (if you can post them).
ReplyDelete@LT
ReplyDeleteOther than Lever, Kearns and Popiel, you might want to keep an eye on Eddie Lack, Sebastien Erixon, Kevin Connaughton, Adam Polasek, Anton Rodin and Bill Sweatt.
There is no RNH in their group but there is some quality.
DSF: The one thing Oiler fans should never do is underestimate the Canucks ability to procure useful players. That Tanev kid is an example.
ReplyDelete@LT.
ReplyDeleteTanev, Erixon (great season in the SEL), Lack (.926 in the AHL and another undrafted FA) and Polasek (a Czech 5th round in 2010 and with 39 points in the Q last season) all look interesting.
Lander and Anton Rodin also look like comparables although Lander is a bit older.
I will for sure LT. Gonna take the camera as well.
ReplyDeleteAnything specific you'd like me to watch for you other then the obvious players?
Good laughs and good points all around. It's exciting to get our first taste of hockey for the year.
ReplyDeleteOn the Canucks side I think I'd like to see more of Connauton, but I'm unsure whether he'll be playing tonight.
Voxwah: RNH's quickness (I've talked about this with all kinds of people) and ability to avoid hits/make plays.
ReplyDeleteMusil's ability to defend off the rush.
Hamilton's foot speed.
Lander's foot speed.
Marincin's size.
Anything on Gernat.
Very interested in seeing what Lack, Erixon, and Sweatt can do on the Canucks side.
ReplyDeleteEddie Lack is just a through and through solid hockey name and it hardly seems fair to have Luongo, Schneider, and Lack in the pipeline. Erixon looks like he could be a real gooder, had a damn fine season for Timra; Sweden just keep pumping players out of late. Sweatt is another one of those undersized guys, and considering how he's gotten to where he is now I'm really pulling for the kid.
I hate that the game is at 8:30 PM MT though, would have loved a 3 PM game or something. Living out East has it's pitfalls.
Roger that LT. I'll let you know how good the beer is as well.
ReplyDeleteExpect a report back later tonight. We've got good club seats just behind the benches. Should be able to see lots.
Went to a junior exhibition game last week so hockey is creeping into my life again.
ReplyDeleteDetroit beats the bucs and the Riders are taking it to the Bombers. (I hope your wife is all up in your shit about it too LT) :)
OH, SHE IS.
ReplyDeleteWait the Canucks got Erixon? The same one that Calgary couldn't sign? Or someone else?
ReplyDeleteSwaggerville should be renamed Dumbasstown. These are some bad penalties they're taking.
ReplyDeleteSomeone else. I saw the Calgary Erixon score for NYR in a game against the St. Louis kids last night.
ReplyDeleteThat's what I thought. I didn't like the idea of the Canucks ending up with that Erixon.
ReplyDeleteYou know, I've watched CFL football for over 40 years. And the thing that SK is doing now that they never did is draft well and procure talent wisely.
ReplyDeleteEvery damn time I have to watch them there's some other guy. Today's it's that #26 character.
25 years ago he'd be an Eskimo. The world is a strange place.
Blogger Smarmy Boss said...

The Canucks actually got the best Erixon.
For free.
Lars Lindgren is their scout in Sweden.
He's a beauty.
@ uni
ReplyDeleteYou've got the wrong Sweatt.
5'8" Lee Sweatt just retired to become an investment banker (they're both really smart guys)
Brother Bill, who you will see tonight (academic All American) is 6'0" 190 and has great wheels.
I'm hoping Czerwonka can pick up where he left off last season. Man did he look good in the playoffs. If he can gain some shooting confidence who knows.
ReplyDeleteSpeed/Mobility, Vision/passing, Positioning/Defense are the the three categories I'm watching tonight... RNH, Hamilton, Lander, Marincin, Teuber, Musil.
I don't think it will be long before Bunz passes Roy on the depth chart, if he ahsn't already.
John Garrett. Where brainwaves go to die.
ReplyDeleteI have my eye on Teubert, RNH, and Ladner.
ReplyDeleteGarrett is so stupid. There was no elbow.
ReplyDeleteMarincin nice play there defemsively there.
ReplyDeleteI think this PK is better than the NHL team's.
ReplyDeleteThat's two and a half hits for Martindale on one shift.
ReplyDeleteMusil looked good there too, didn't see a pemalty. I can't remember which defender but there's a RH for the Oilers who is slooowwwwwwww.
ReplyDeleteI liked the physicality too spoiler but the footspeed is troubling.
ReplyDeleteWe look big, fast, mobile, and lost in translation.
ReplyDeleteLander wins a faceoff, showoff.
ReplyDeleteA propos nothing, I played a board game Friday with a guy named Ryan Martindale. Told him to hope that the guy with his name never scores an own-goal late in a close playoff game. From one who knows.
ReplyDeleteGernat with the pass that didn't have a receiver but Czerwonka worked real hard to get back on the play.
ReplyDeleteWow, Jensen, what a play.
ReplyDelete"Jensen, the rookie..."
ReplyDeleteI don't think he's clear on what this game's all about. Of course, neither is the Canucks' website, which is billing it as Canucks vs. Sharks.
Hamilton scores a flukey one.
ReplyDeleteThat was a good shift by RNH. At least I'm assuming it was RNH. My friendly neighbourhood play-by-players aren't much help.
ReplyDeleteCornet's looked good.
ReplyDeleteNice shot by I believe Lowery there.
ReplyDeleteRNH with another nice shift.
ReplyDeleteLander seems to have quite a bit of jump out there. no lack of speed there from what i can see. and he likes to shoot the puck.
ReplyDeleteI think Anton Lander will be very disappointed not score this game.
ReplyDeleteRoy looks like he plays too deep to my eye. He doesn't look big enough to pull that off.
Cornet with an exceptional defensive play there. WOW.
ReplyDeleteMarincin with a nice pass there coming out of his zone.
ReplyDeleteNice little pass by Marincin on the breakout. He looks like he's grown an inch and a half and lost 15 pounds.
ReplyDeleteRNH with a pretty set of plays there. Electric.
ReplyDeleteThis "Nugent-Hopkins" guy seems pretty good. Where'd we pick him up?
ReplyDeleteRNH attempts to outdo Jensen with the far side stuke.
ReplyDeleteThis Hopkins kid seems like he has some vision.
ReplyDeleteFuck sports net. John Garrett and numb nuts can't talk about anything other than the Canucks
ReplyDeleteGene looks like someone stuck a vaccum cleaner in his face while he was sleeping.
ReplyDeleteFor me, the right guys stood out. Musil, Marincin, Teubert on the blue, and RNH, Lander, Hamilton up front.
ReplyDeleteSome of the role players who I liked were Czerwonka, Cornet, Turvainen.
Goalies been good too.
Abney seems to be getting a bit of a push in terms of ice time.
ReplyDeleteTyrvainen looks very interesting so far.
ReplyDeleteIf I'm going in with no knowledge of any of these prospects, I'm saying that RNH is the best we have, followed by Cornet.
ReplyDeleteCornet with the brilliant PK in the first gets rewarded with a juicy rebound in the second.
ReplyDeleteCornet has been splendid. Martindale is slow. Marincin with a big mistake there but Fedun showed some wheels.
ReplyDeleteBit of a riverboat gambler in our young Marincin
ReplyDeleteRNH is smoother here to my eye than he was in the summer. Every time he touches the puck there's some creativity and he's a horse on the backcheck.
ReplyDeleteCzerwonka to Lander on a beauty play. Fun stuff.
Marincin with a wonderful defensive play and then a ridiculous pass to no one.
ReplyDeleteIf Lander had a set of hands he'd be Joe Sakic. Always cruising the slot. That Czerwonka kid sure knows where to be too. Rarely out of place all game, gets on the puck hard and fast.
ReplyDeleteA lot of these guys look good. The Oilers have a bright future, as long as their games are all against players with no NHL experience.
ReplyDeleteI think RNH might be able to play at a higher level.
ReplyDeletewas that a sweet give and go with Hamilton and RNH ?
ReplyDeleteMaybe Lander too.
ReplyDeleteNice move, Lander. :)
ReplyDeleteWell that's the thing about Cornet. He probably should dominate at this level considering how he was scoring at the end of his Junior days. He's having a great game though one way or the other.
ReplyDeleteLander was determined to score this game. This level is definitely below him.
ha, spOiler, how about those hands...nice baseline drive
ReplyDeleteRegwald: It was a thing of beauty. RNH to Hamilton may last all the way to the Joey Moss.
ReplyDeleteProbably not, though.
I bet Gillis is happy they have Schnieder. This guy is swiss cheese.
ReplyDeleteHey, is Pitlick still recovering? Surprised not to see him.
ReplyDeleteLT, Hope you are right about RNH and Hamilton. There are looking in sync tonight.
ReplyDeleteI'd hold onto Hamilton for a longer look, he has looked impressive.
ReplyDeleteSK Oiler Fan,
ReplyDeleteI think he might be what you call a project. Big goalie, but wow, he looks clumsy.
And gives up rebounds like Weekes !
Principe and Tambellini appear to be having a conversation - think we're supposed to be able to hear it?
ReplyDeleteOh, there we go.
ReplyDeleteYou had to ask about Gene & Steve, didn't you?
ReplyDeleteHoil, lol. Didn't mean to infer he had no hands at all. I think he has 4 missed shots this game though. 3 for sure. He looks like a beauty so far.
ReplyDeleteI would sub Gene in for Garrett in a hummingbird's heartbeat.
ReplyDeleteSteve Tambellini telling RNH to just go out and be what he is. Yeah.
ReplyDeleteHow many of the young guys can you have playing together at one time, you ask JG?
ReplyDeleteWell, it appears the Oilers are going for 24.
Is Lander supposed to be our answer for the PP too?
I know, spOILer, but the timing was perfect...and Gene over Garret is like warm koolaide over battery acid.
ReplyDeleteLander from the newest "Tikkannen."
I wouldn't be sorry for that to be the last I ever see of Cam Abney.
ReplyDeleteLoser
ReplyDeleteWhy do you hate Lander, LT? ;-)
I for one, refused to watch that exhibition of brutality.
ReplyDeleteI also didn't notice it was a beauty tilt.
Lander, RNH, Cornet all look beyond this level. Probably Hamilton too. Tyrvainen's been the biggest surprise for me so far though. Out of the Fs that is.
ReplyDeleteRNH is lucky, according to broadcast.
ReplyDeleteThe guy in a Flames jersey celebrating that goal tells you what you need to know about the Vancouver Canucks.
ReplyDeleteWow. Their goalie is awful.
ReplyDeleteNice move by RNH, but he should have cleared that.
I've only seen maybe 3 minutes of this game, haven't read much about Martindale, how's he looking?
ReplyDeleteSo what's the deal with Pitlick's absence?
ReplyDeleteApparently Lander has requested some goalie pads so that he can show how much he has improved in that position as well (seriously, he is everywhere).
ReplyDeletespeeds: He's bigger than I thought, had some effective shifts in the first period but has faded in this period.
ReplyDeleteIf you told me he hadn't played in the last 10 minutes I'd believe you.
Schitzo:
ReplyDeleteI thought I had read that most of the prospects will only be playing 2 of the 3 games, so maybe this is just his game out of the lineup?
That alleged little ball of hate, Antti Tyrvainen, is doing OK playing hockey so far.
ReplyDeleteLander has a website. it's 2011.
ReplyDeleteAnd we have 7 goals.
The few minutes I saw were in the first, so maybe that's why he caught my eye, I thought he looked not bad in the little bit I saw.
ReplyDeleteRoy has looked really good in his limited work.
ReplyDeleteCornet looks bigger than I remember. Drafted at 5'10"?
ReplyDeleteWho the devil is "Colin Smith"?
ReplyDeletespeeds: Yeah, he was better in period 1. Just had a good shift in this period.
ReplyDeleteIsn't he your cousin?
ReplyDelete"Steve Smith": A guy who can find the crest every time.
ReplyDeleteRNH, Lander, Tyr, Teubert, and Roy. All look good.
ReplyDeleteRNH looks like he passes so much because he draws two guys to him whenever he has the puck. He skates them out of position and then passes to a teammate in wide open primo ice. I can see the comparisons to the Great One, they're minds seem to work in the same way. This game hasn't convinced me he should stay up, but he has been impressive.
ReplyDeleteWonder if Lander and Magnum PS have a bet going. Lander has been thinking shot all game.
They're... Smacks head in disbelief.
ReplyDeleteTencer Tweets:
ReplyDeleteLander all smiles after a great period. I told him about Paajarvi's hat trick here last year. Lander says "I'm gonna beat him."
7-1?
ReplyDeleteMust be MacT's fault
CBC really needs to hire Johnny Garrett, and fire Simpson to color alongside Hughson.
ReplyDeleteMrs. Ritz would be so sad to see that.
ReplyDeleteGagner should be typing up his resume.
ReplyDeleteLander just took his job.
Everybody is Gretzky out there!!
ReplyDeleteShots are 27-12 after 2 periods for the good guys. No surprise there.
ReplyDeleteOilers Live Update
Keeping bangin' that drum DSF.
ReplyDelete(heads up. its a prospects game)
paylerla - you heard me. pay her
Kind of an interesting game to watch. Admittedly the Canucks have what 12 guys on tryouts there so the Oiler kids are playing scrubs. It reminds me of an international hockey game with Canada playing Norway.I'm not sure its much of an accomplishment to be winning. But still you expect them to be pasting them and they are making good on it.
ReplyDeleteThe Nuge is a slippery little bugger out there, and he has the puck seemingly on a string. If he can translate that to the NHL he will be good.
Lander looks like a man playing with boys.
Czerwonka looks surprisingly good in this game.
Musil has also looked pretty strong with the puck and has dished fairly well.
Wow, these Sportsnet between period items have really improved!
ReplyDeleteHockeyDB lists Cornet as 6'2" and 200 lbs as does the Barons site.
ReplyDeleteAdmittedly it is only the 1st game of the rookie tournament but one guy I have been pleasantly surprised by is Martindale. Wasn't expecting much but he has reminded me of Spezza. Tall lanky center who is a very good stick handler in traffic and has the ability to slow the game down, draw the defender and find the open man.
ReplyDeleteHaving seen any problem with his compete level in a very small sampling. There is definitely some skill there if he wants it.
Enjoy this one; the Oilers might not score seven goals in one game the rest of the season.
ReplyDeleteMy take on Martindale so far...
ReplyDeleteI don't think he's slow, at least not top end wise. He's got long legs and a long stride and his glides look pretty efficient at speed. But like most long leg guys he lacks in the first three strides, and he turns wider. It helps if guys like that can make it up in anticipation but I'm not certain he has those brains from what I've seen so far.
He's been physical though and is a toolsy guy. If he can gain some leg strength for his starts and turns, he might end up a long term project who eventually pans. Most likely though he'll be Giroux.
Looks like Teubert just got his nose broken.
ReplyDeleteI guess Tuebert didn't like the way his nose used to look and asked a Canuck prospect to break it for him.
ReplyDeleteA little MacT coaching with that scrap there?
ReplyDeleteI concur with Dr. Lowe...
ReplyDeleteI didn't realise it was Rob Kerr on the broadcast. It would be nice if we got a few of him this season. Bright guy that I will miss hearing on the radio here in Calgary.
ReplyDeleteThe fights here have not convinced me away from the 'drop fighting altogether camp'.
After that Teubert scrap i doubt the commentator who never wanted to see Abney again will get their wish.
ReplyDeleteGame is getting a bit ugly out there.
ReplyDeleteThat is a bunch of times that Fedun has created something only to finish with something dumb.
ReplyDeleteNo idea what that means.
You can see why they like Marincin. Lots of defensive tools.
ReplyDeleteNICE physical play there by Martindale. He's still slow, though, even for a big guy.
ReplyDeleteYea Maricin moves pretty good for a big man, fairly poised too.
ReplyDeleteIf they ever feed Gernat, he might become a player.
ReplyDeletehoil: Save some for Marincin! Slovakia needs some fast food places.
ReplyDeleteExplicit reference to Corsi followed by allusion to NHLE. Far out.
ReplyDeleteI thought Garrett handled the Corsi and NHLE questions about as well as George Bush would have.
ReplyDeleteListening to the commentators talk about Desjardin's NHL equivalent was like listening to 14 year-old males talk about sex. No clue to how it works, yet complete experts on the matter.
ReplyDeletemartindale. Couturier lite. So far his game is likeable.
ReplyDeleteHow many games do kids play these days? Does it have an effect on the injuries?
I was shocked Garrett didn't respond with, he was a goalie right ? LMAO
ReplyDeleteMacT with the death stare.
ReplyDeleteI'll give Garrett credit (as painful as it is) for making the point that it's tough to get an idea of a player's SEL performance without TOI.
ReplyDeleteMartindale has heavy feet and does lots of gliding so as one poster said he's going to have to read the play better than most in the pros to not be a step behind.
ReplyDeleteHe's a giant out there with good hands so he's going to look good against these scrubs.
I'm with Spoiler. He's a more physical Giroux until he improves the foot speed.
He's got a hell of a reach though
ReplyDeleteI like Marincin. He's good.
ReplyDeleteMartindale makes a nice play there and maybe it's just because RNH and Lander are the other primary centers but I don't think he's going to end up being one of the 8 best pro centers in this organization.
Lowetide,
ReplyDeleteWhen is the Moss cup? This weekend? If so, where does one get tickets?
MacT would have loved Lander. Such an efficient, positionally aware player who slows the game down when he gets the puck.
ReplyDeleteHis skating has a long way to go for him to be top 8.
ReplyDeleteI don't think they've announced it yet. My guess is maybe next Tuesday or so.
ReplyDeleteThe problem with Martindale, for the Oilers, is if you don't get him signed now, what's his incentive to sign with you at all before the June 1, 2012 deadline?
ReplyDeleteNot signing him now shows him he's far down the depth chart, so arguably it would make more sense for him to go back into the draft and hope you go to a team with less depth?
Joey Moss Cup is the 18th at 2pm. Tix are on sale through the Oilers site.
ReplyDeleteAnyone know if they're also doing the Golden Bears game?
Joey Moss Cup is Sunday the 18th - tickets here:
ReplyDeletehttp://www.ticketmaster.ca/Edmonton-Oilers-tickets/artist/805943
Found it online, this Sunday at 2 pm, tickets are $10. Should we organize a meet and greet for all of us who lurk in these part on the Internet?
ReplyDeleteLander even skates a bit like MPS in open ice. Hunched over a bit, driving his arms parellel to the direction of travel.
ReplyDeleteMarincin does look good. A little risky at times, but able to recover easily against this competition.
If you'll indulge a little more too-soon future speculation from me, I'd say that Oiler bench featured 3 for-sure future NHLers, 3 decent possibilities, and a spate of outside shots. Which is pretty damn fine, considering Klefbom, Pitlick and Bunz weren't in the game.
ReplyDeleteHey guys just got back from the first two sets of games in Penticton.
ReplyDeleteOilers blow out the Canucks and the flames get pounded all in the same night! The price of the whole tournament is now covered.
A few thoughts about the oilers game tonight.
Lander looked shockingly fantastic on the offensive end, and as good as billed in the dzone and on faceoffs.
Martindale must be getting fed up with hearing about "lack of intensity" he was hitting skating and was pretty special with the puck on his stick. More than a few times he seemed either dangle into the zone or make a really smart pass. To my eye he had as good of a game as RNH.
Speaking of RNH its 100% different watching him compared to Hall last year. Obviously the playing styles are different but Hall was visibly the best player on the ice last year. RNH played to my eye like Eberle very smart on the forechecks tenacious on the backchecks but quite otherwise. Saying that he made 3 unbelievable passes that could have been goals.
On the D side Musil to me was the most steady consistent dman of the night. He might not have the end to end rushes of Fedun but he was a rock on the back end. Looked far superior on the defensive side of the puck than any of the Dmen on any of the 4 teams that played tonight.
Roy was as good tonight as he was last year in the tournament. Made some outrageously huge saves and saved the shots he was supposed to make.
Overall great night cant wait for tomorrow. Its not NHL caliber hockey, but it is for sure a step up from the CHL. Plus you cant beat price well worth the drive from Alberta

ReplyDeleteDSF, thanks for the heads up on Sweatt. Didn't know the elder brother had retired, was really hoping he's make it. Both had the billing as speed demons with smarts, so hopefully one of them will make it. Business and finance is where the real money (and criminals) is though.
ReplyDeleteI wouldn't be overly surprised by offense from Lander at this level considering he's been developing in the SEL. Wonder what type of numbers he would have posted in the CHL. Same goes for MPS, Klefbom, and Larsson and Hedman for that matter.
I was overall pretty impressed with the group last night. Musil, Lander, NuHop were the standouts for myself.
ReplyDelete
