Oilers Pre-Season Scoring (Rookies)

We've looked at preseason scoring before and have concluded that the Oilers fast track rookies and the first sign is preseason games. I did an item on this last year, and in looking at the seasons 2005-09 it's a strong trend (that an Edmonton rookie getting a long look in camp will also play at least a game during the season).
Now much of that has to do with the quality of team over those years, but the current Oilers aren't going to trump the 2005-09 bunch (save for the '06 crew).

Here's what the earlier glance at rookie pre-season scoring delivered:
  • Fall 2005: Of the 14 rookies who played more than one pre-season game, 11 (or 79%) would eventually spend some time in the NHL in 2005-06. The excluded players (Schremp, Stortini and Troy Bodie) would all eventually play in the big leagues.
  • Fall 2006:  Of the 17 who played more than one pre-season game, 14 (or 82.3 %) got at least a cup of coffee in the show during the 06-07 season. Slava Trukhno, Jonas Almtorp and Tyler Spurgeon are still on the outside looking in.
  • Fall 2007: Of the 9 who played more than one pre-season game, 4 (44.4%) turned the trick and played in the NHL. Tim Sestito, Ryan O'Marra and Bodie have since appeared in the NHL, Trukhno and Almtorp did not make an NHL appearance during a regular season game in the North American stay.
  • Fall 2008: Of the 12 who played more than one pre-season game, 7 (58.3%) made the NHL during the 2008-09 season. Spurgeon and Trukhno once again make the list but never got close to the NHL in a regular season game.
  • Fall 2009: Of the 9 who played more than one pre-season game, 7 (77.8%) made the NHL during the year. The holdouts were Jordan Eberle and Bryan Young, both of whom played in the NHL (one before, one after).
Since I haven't seen it published anywhere else, here are the 2010 fall stats. I have those who broke camp with the team and were dressed opening night October 7th in bold, those that were callups in italics.
  1. Magnus Paajarvi 3, 3-1-4
  2. Chris Vande Velde 3, 2-2-4
  3. Alex Plante 2, 0-4-4
  4. Jordan Eberle 4, 2-1-3
  5. Linus Omark, 3, 1-2-3
  6. Taylor Hall 3, 1-2-3
  7. Colin McDonald 2, 1-0-1
  8. Jeff Petry 2, 1-0-1
  9. Teemu Hartikainen 2, 0-1-1
  10. Shawn Belle 2, 0-1-1
  11. Ryan O'Marra 4, 0-1-1
  12. Devan Dubnyk 3, 2.61 .920
Of the 12 who played more than one preseason game, 11 (91.7%) played in the NHL last season. The 2 game rule since 2005 is running at around 75% as a forecaster for callups. It makes sense, the kids are going to either make the grade or be in the mix for callup, and we also have to factor in that ridiculous injury number Edmonton endures each season. With all that said, here are the current rookies with 2+ games in preseason (so far):
  1. Ryan Nugent-Hopkins 3, 0-3-3
  2. Anton Lander 2, 1-1-2
  3. Antti Tyrvainen 2, 1-0-1
  4. Teemu Hartikainen 2, 0-0-0
  5. Kirill Tulupov 2, 0-0-0
  6. Ryan Martindale 2, 0-0-0
  7. Tanner House 2, 0-0-0
  8. Tyler Pitlick 2, 0-0-0
There's a bunch more on the way, I would think Chris VandeVelde, Curtis Hamilton and Taylor Fedun might get another game before getting sent to OKC. It's already an interesting list, and recent Oiler history suggests 6 of those 8 names will play an NHL game in 11-12.

  1. Of the 8 listed I think that Martindale and House are the most likely 2 that don't see NHL ice this year.

The injury to Gagner pretty much cements the Nuge's spot to open the season and you would think that if Lander continues to impress he might force his way onto the opening night roster.

It is also a big opportunity for Brule to once again show he belongs.

    Hopefully Gagner's injury isn't serious.

  2. I'm at the game tonight, but last night had the line up I wanted to see...

    RNH, Lander, Harski, Gagner, Tyrvainen.

(Watched the entire game on my Android. LOL@iPhone users. Lusers?)

I imagine we will get Brule and Belanger tonight, although Gagner's injury increases the chances of seeing RNH and Lander.

Pretty boring game last night though, with offensive opps few and far between. Hopefully we see more firepower tonight.

  3. The Journal is reporting that Gagner's injury is day-to-day but that he was held out for precautionary reasons. He wasn't scheduled to play tonight anyway so I don't see anything to suggest that he is not going to be in the opening night line-up - at least not yet.

"wastr" - a fair description of the last few seasons.

  4. I hope I didn't jinx Gagner after saying he looked like an adult out there last night.

I went on record predicting MPS breaks out this year, based on spidey sense; but the difference between watching Gagner skating around like a major junior player twilight zoned into the NHL the past seasons, and the adult not at all out of place Gagner I believe I saw last night is remarkable.

  8. The D is probably where my attention should be, considering the line up.

Barker/Plante--the pylon pairing--could be interesting to watch. Plante had a pretty good camp last year, and by accounts showed solid on OKC, but hasn't shown much so far this TC. We'll see if the mobility challenged can play together.

Fedun, on the other hand has all the mobility in the world. Be nice if he can do himself a favour a pot a couple of points. I'll try and watch to see how much he cheats to offense, which during the Young Prospcts seemed like a bunch.

And then there's Potter. Former star magician in school, can he be the late bloomer Dman this team so desperately could use?

Canon: as in D, as in we could sure use one.

  9. Interesting thing for me in Brule drawing in as #4C

  10. I just assume Brulé is always a game time decision.

  14. I think the flames need more players whose name starts with a "B"

  15. Bhoo...

Nice to know there's a workaround. However that was one the guy sitting next to me didn't have. The cursing was quite enjoyable.

    Bruce...

B is for bad beyond belief. I hope. But I wouldn't be betting any bread on it.
